A new name

I have a new name for my ethical business – Evie & Roo. Imogen’s Wardrobe has grown from an organic dress label into a kids wear brand with a conscience and it was time for a re-brand.

There is a brand new blog included on the new website at www.evieandroo.co.uk please pop over and follow, you can also sign up to the newsletter at the bottom of the page.

The name was inspired by being a Mum to a little kangaroo fan. It also reflects the stories children love, like Winnie the Pooh, Kanga and Roo, stories which are behind the designs you see on the blog. The collection at Evie & Roo is hand designed in organic, fair trade and sustainable fabrics, which gives it an interesting background story too.

The Little Flower Girl

Little flower girls do the most important jobs at a weddings, including throwing confetti with squeals of excitement, playing sword fights with posies and hiding under tables with handfuls of wedding cake.

This is why Imogen’s Wardrobe decided to order in some beautiful organic fabrics and design the perfect flower girl dress with big pockets to accommodate, confetti, cameras, posies, favours or any other essential items for the job.

Imogen’s Wardrobe Little Flower Girl Dress is a different take on the old American vintage style pillowcase dress. This dress is perfect if you are looking for something simple, natural and child friendly.

Handmade from lightweight organic and fair trade cotton, the dresses have deep vintage linen handkerchief pockets and are lined with soft organic cotton. They feature big organza shoulder bows, which can be matched to your colour theme, for dramatic effect at your event.

The dresses are loose and comfortable with adjustable bow fastenings at the shoulder (the ribbons are sewn into the dress casing for safety), and they are machine washable.

Each Little Flower Girl Dress comes wrapped in tissue, in its own gift box, with a cute flower girl story on the hang tag to make this dress even more special for your little girl when it arrives.

Three handkins and a pinny!

When it was time for Imogen’s Wardrobe to put together a brand new school uniform for ‘first day at school’ we were inspired by those, oh so cute, checked summer dresses and bedtime tales of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. In the story, little Lucie from Little Town Farm looses three handkins and a pinny.

This Imogen’s Wardrobe Farm Yard Pinnie dress would be perfect for any Little Lucie to wear, school or play. It is handmade from 100% organic cotton with a zip front fastening and large patch pockets.

We hope that this little Beatrix Potter inspired pinnie won’t get lost at school!

Fairy Tale

All of the designs you see on this blog are inspired by stories, fairy tales and nursery rhymes and when Imogen’s Wardrobe saw the Faerytaleish Pinterest Writing Contest at Yearning For Wonderland it was too much to resist an entry.

This little children’s story was inspired by the beautiful fairy boat image below from Ruanna’s Faerytaleish Pinterest Board…

A Forest Fairy Tale

The forest was dark, it was the night, a flash of a sword a wing shining bright. Moonlit silk she wore on her head, silver skull and cross bones, “I’m captain!” she said.

The little girl captain and her tiny crew leaped through the forest wearing big hats of blue. On vines like rigging which moved in the breeze the little girl pirates swung high in the trees.

On the edge of the forest was an enchanted lake, fed by a river shaped like a snake.

A ship, fit for a queen, was tied by a rope, to the edge of the lake near the steep forest slope. Where the little girl pirates rested their heads, on hammocks of gossamer and fine silver thread.

As the sun rose, the fish eagle flew, swooping and scooping up fish for the crew. Life there was easy when the forest was growing, but the littlest shipmates had no way of knowing.

That one day the forest would fall to its knees, loggers were chopping and chopping the trees! Who thought it was right to plunder the land, and leave it a sight Pirates just couldn’t stand.

The fish eagle landed to tell them the news, “The forest is going on trucks that form queues!”. The little girl captain said “That can’t be right! They can’t take the trees, for them we will fight?”

“And what of the birds, the creatures and plants?” said the little girl shipmate who wore bright red pants.

The loggers looked up, oh what a sight! The little girl pirates were ready to fight. Swords flashed in the moonlight and quick as can be, the loggers were taken and tied to a tree. As if by magic gold dust was sprinkled, trees shot to the sky, the canopy twinkled. Magic beanstalks you ask? How can that be? Because the little girl pirates were fairies you see.

The elves at East Rose Cottage are working extra hard to finish the preparations for the Edinburgh Baby & Child Show. We will be doing our first ‘show and tell’ of the lovely new organic dress collection at the event on the 26 May.

Pat a Cake, Pat a Cake...

Birthdays are really special and exciting when you are little, so Imogen’s Wardrobe decided to design a unique birthday dress for the occasion.

When the dress was finished, we road tested it with Birthday tea for Daddy at Centotre on George Street in Edinburgh. Meringues with chocolate sauce was our chosen pudding and the birthday cake dress loved Centotre’s special Italian chocolate sauce too! Luckily it washed clean out on a gentle cycle and our little “I am 4 dress” is ready to wear at the next birthday party. This dress comes made to order with candles for 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 years.

We have a beautiful Dalmatian who lives on our street and quite often we see him looking out of the window, regal and serene. This design is an ode to all things doggie and spotty. A popular theme at East Rose Cottage, with bedtime tales of Bottomley Potts all covered in spots from Hairy Maclary and, of course, the classic 101 Dalmatians.

The Dalmatian Dress is made from 100% organic cotton needle cord, trimmed with bamboo cotton spots, finished with a tiny red collar made from recycled bottle felt. All 100% machine washable, so you won’t need to worry about the little one playing with the dog in the garden in this dress. My Little Matryoshka Doll

This design was inspired by my daughter’s little wooden Matryoshka Russian dolls, the dolls get smaller as the dresses get smaller and the smallest size is a cute little 6-12m baby size. The one featured here is size 4-5 years, perfect for little Matryoshka fans to play in. Handmade from soft organic and fair trade needle cord and finished off with strawberry buttons, it is generously made to allow plenty of room for your little girl to grow.

Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep

You will find Little Bo Peep’s sheep on Imogen’s Wardrobe new accessories. These lovely new hair clips feature wooden sheep buttons. Not only are they super cute, but they also match the Dotty Daisy Dress featured in August’s blog post. Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep and doesn’t know where to find them, leave them alone and they’ll come home, wagging their tails behind them. Little Bo Peep began to weep and lay down to rest for a while, she fell fast asleep while counting her sheep and dreamt they came home with a smile.

Whilst getting the new designs ready for the very first Imogen’s Wardrobe Christmas market, I noticed the red pirate t-shirts hanging up around the studio were looking very festive. So I braved the weather in the Cottage garden to try and get some half decent photos of the Red Pirate Collection for you. Our favourite Imogen’s Wardrobe Pirate story is below and it will be included on the t-shirt labels at the market. (see the events page for details)

The little boy pirates crept onto their ship, with a chest full of treasure and some rope for the trip. They heaved the mainsail until it was tight, moonlit blue silk, what a magnificent sight.

“Hoist the pirate flag”, ordered the Little Boy Captain, “There’s land up a head, be ready with those swords men.” So they landed on a treasure island and set about digging, on a beach full of coconut buttons which they used for the rigging.

Ladybird, ladybird fly away home

There is much excitement at East Rose Cottage this week because the new organic ladybird dress design is finished. The dress was officially previewed last night, before bath time and during Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom (just to make it extra challenging). I’m pleased to say, it got whoops of delight. So with a good review, it has passed the test and is the lovely September blog post. There really is only one nursery story attached to this little dress…

Ladybird, ladybird fly away home, your house is on fire, your children are gone, all except one and that’s little Ann, for she crept under the frying pan.
