<p>I&#8217;ve lost it, you know. My window seat. We switched spots and the shades are drawn up. No one sits there anymore.</p>
<p>I can hear my math teacher mumbling to herself at night, scribbling on her seating chart as her husband begs her to come to turn out the light and come to bed. She tries too hard. &#8220;That Rachel girl is trouble,&#8221; she would say. &#8220;Always reading J.D. Salinger, always daydreaming. Let&#8217;s move her away from any possible distractions.&#8221; And you can&#8217;t forget the maniacal laughter.</p>
<p>Relax, I&#8217;m in another weird seat. This one doesn&#8217;t even have a railing. So I guess don&#8217;t relax or you&#8217;ll fall off. It&#8217;s big, which is better than the crammed-in chair next to my friend.</p>
<p>I miss my old seat, though. In the final days of my free-gazing fourth period, there was a bubble-letter romance beginning to unfold on my desktop. Rooted in hatred of love, I thought it ironic that they had eventually asked each other where they sat at lunch. Still, I think my teacher may have sprayed it off. She has one of those ultra-religious moral fibers.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just wrong to separate two lovers,&#8221; I would write in carefully-constructed criticism, &#8220;whether they be humans or the mind and a seat.&#8221; Which is right. How can I possibly concentrate without my alluring window seat? And how can the two lovers stay focused while they bite their nails, wondering what the teacher has to say about two Geometry students&#8211;gasp!&#8211;in a romance?</p>
<p>Yeah, I think ethos might work.</p>

<description><![CDATA[Writing about your travels can be a difficult task.  Not only do you have to attempt to portray to t]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Writing about your travels can be a difficult task.  Not only do you have to attempt to portray to the reader what the location was like, but also you have to prove to them that your account is trustworthy.  One way to analyze these traits in an author is to look at their use of ethos, logos, and pathos. Samuel Johnson and James Boswell visited Scotland together in 1773 and wrote very different accounts of what the experience was like. While Boswell’s account of the journey reads like a diary, Johnson writes with a sense of national pride and intellect.  Because of the personal journal style that Boswell uses, his account ends up feeling entirely like pathos and is not particularly effective.  However, Johnson uses pathos and logos very effectively, while his writing on the trip as a whole is an excellent use of ethos.</p>
<p>Samuel Johnson has a unique way of using pathos effectively while still coming across to the reader as an intellectual and not a daydreamer. While in Scotland, Johnson begins to ponder the desire for change among the Scottish. By offering his brief opinion at the end, Johnson is able to appeal to the reader’s emotions. Johnson writes, “Since they have known that their condition was capable of improvement, their progress in useful knowledge has been rapid and uniform. What remains to be done they will quickly do, and then wonder, like me, why that which was so necessary and so easy was so long delayed.” (Johnson, 151) The Scottish have made some advancements in education, and Johnson believes that the more they search for knowledge, the more they will wonder why they hadn’t searched earlier, just like he has. Johnson wants the Scottish to be educated and thankful, and this desire comes through when he states that he wonders why they did not seek out knowledge sooner. Education is of utmost importance to Johnson, and seeing people aspire to reach it helps him feel worthwhile. Johnson did not have to describe the education level of everyone in Scotland to reach the reader’s emotions, only throw in his opinion.</p>
<p>Most people would consider the use of logos strictly as a way to include facts, yet Johnson uses logos for a number of different reasons. While visiting a hut, Johnson begins to describe to the reader the details of its construction and location. By describing these, the reader can imagine exactly what the hut looks like, as opposed to begrudgingly reading a long description. “A hut is constructed with loose stones, ranged for the most part with some tendency to circularity. It must be placed where the wind cannot act upon it with violence, because it has no cement; and where the water will run easily away, because it has no floor but the naked ground.” (Johnson, 152) The hut is rather scantily furnished and constructed quite simply, for the stones are not plastered together and there is no floor.  However, the location must be quite reasonable, or else the hut would be destroyed. This description of the hut works better than Johnson describing the make-up of the entire building because we get a sense of what the hut is like with only a few brief descriptions. Also, no emotional descriptions are given, which helps the reader imagine the hut simply as a setting before the emotional details are added, such as who lives there and what the scenery is like. By using logos in his description of the hut, Johnson portrayed vast amounts of information in only a couple of sentences and avoided boring the reader.</p>
<p>Authors can build up ethos in many ways, including using the piece of writing as a whole to their advantage. For the most part this is the technique that Johnson employs. However, there are places in his writing where Johnson will use previous knowledge of his to build credit to his name. Johnson compares Cromwell’s take-over of Scotland to the tactics of the Roman Empire, giving an opinion that good things can come from awful sources. By including this piece of historical information, Johnson is able to increase the reader’s sense of his intellect without bogging down the writing. “Yet was the Romans did to other nations, was in a great degree done by Cromwell to the Scots; he civilized them by conquests, and introduced by useful violence the arts of peace. I was told at Aberdeen that the people learned from Cromwell’s soldiers to make shoes and to plant kail.” (Johnson, 150) Cromwell’s invasion of Scotland eventually became peaceful and even gave the Scots information they did not previously have that improved their daily lives. By giving this comparison, not only does Johnson give the reader a better sense of what the situation was in Scotland at the time, but the reader is impressed by his understanding of history. Even though the information presented is not directly about the journey Johnson took personally, he was able to use this passage to build trust with the reader that he was a reliable source for information. Anyone who can present insightful information at a moment’s notice is going to appear reliable to those around him, and Johnson uses this to his advantage quite effectively.</p>
<p>Boswell is quite a bit younger than Johnson, which may be a partial explanation for why his writing comes off as being an excerpt from his personal journal. Although he does give detailed descriptions, the writing does not give the reader a sense of the entire situation. While travelling, Boswell and Johnson find themselves in the hut of an older woman. “Mr. Johnson asked me where she slept. I asked one of the guides, who asked her in Erse. She spoke with a kind of high tone. He told us she was afraid we wanted to go to bed to her. This coquetry, or whatever it may be called, of so wretched a like being was truly ludicrous. Mr. Johnson and I afterwards made merry upon it.” (Boswell, 154) Johnson became curious about where the woman slept, and when asked she became afraid that Johnson and Boswell wanted to take advantage of her.  Both men considering her quite ugly, they laughed due to the sheer ridiculousness of the idea.  Although this gives us a great description of one moment, this information does not help the reader understand the journey through Scotland, or what Scotland itself is like. Anecdotal scenes like this can be acceptable when interspersed between descriptions relevant to the whole journey, but do not add merit to the writing when left alone. Overall, a personal journal account of a journey is not always the best description of the entire situation, and this is Boswell’s downfall.</p>
<p>Trying to portray every aspect of an expedition can be incredibly difficult. If a writer is not careful in how they present their work, holes will be left in the writing and the reader will miss important information. By presenting situations using ethos, logos, and pathos, Samuel Johnson was able to portray his experiences in Scotland in 1773 to the reader effectively.  However, due to the diary format used by Boswell, the reader was left asking questions about what the experience was like as a whole and did not give the reader a sense of his credibility. Although ethos, logos, and pathos may seem to be three simple words, Johnson’s use of all three in his account pushed him above his companion, Boswell. In the case of Samuel Johnson, “three” was company.</p>

As for us – we do not believe this to be a racial slur, albeit a mere distinction of people. </span></span></div>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Michael Callaway at Mesa Community College offers <a href="http://www.public.asu.edu/~macalla/logosethospathos.html">this really good summary</a> of Aristotle&#8217;s three elements of persuasion: ethos, pathos, and logos. As a composition teacher, he focuses on the ways you can use language (as opposed to your physical appearance, facial expressions, etc.) to develop these three elements. Good advice for writers and speakers!</p>
<p>Remember: understanding ethos, pathos, and logos isn&#8217;t just about helping you be more persuasive. If you can identify how <em>other</em> speakers use Aristotle&#8217;s tools, you can recognize when others&#8217; efforts to persuade you are based more on emotion and character and less on logic and evidence.</p>
<p>Ethos, pathos, and logos are all tools. Conscientious speakers (that means <em>you</em>!!!) use those tools skillfully and honestly to craft strong, responsible arguments. Less scrupulous speakers can abuse these tools for selfish and immoral ends. <a href="http://sixmilevillage.wordpress.com/2006/10/20/a-political-speech-analysis/">Hitler was a master</a> of ethos, pathos, and logos. Corporations build ethos by engaging in expensive <a href="http://sixmilevillage.wordpress.com/2006/10/20/a-political-speech-analysis/">public relations campaigns</a>, while their corporate charters still demand that they act strictly in the interest of increasing their investors&#8217; stock dividends. Crafty spin doctors can <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misuse_of_statistics">misuse statistics</a> in a multitude of ways.</p>
<p>Think of good persuasion like good driving: You&#8217;re a good driver. You will always follow the rules. But because not everyone is a responsible driver, you have to make yourself an even better driver: drive defensively, watch out for crazy drivers, and respond quickly and confidently to keep someone else from pulling you into an accident.</p>
<p>Persuade defensively. Use ethos, pathos, and logos responsibly. Watch out for crazy persuaders. And when someone misuses ethos, pathos, and logos, don&#8217;t let them drag you—or your <em>polis</em>—into a wreck.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Rob did a fantastic job sharing this past week.  He reminded all of us that if we will love and follow Christ that He will work all of the things in our lives for our Good (His Kingdom purposes) &#8211; Romans 8:28.  I also love that responses that Job had in Chapter one and Chapter two towards the testing in his life that Rob pointed out.  Chapter One was mourning the loss and worship.  Chapter two was declaring that good and bad it&#8217;s up to God &#8211; He&#8217;s sovereign.  The best place for us to put all of our life is in His hands.</p>
<p>This coming Sunday night we&#8217;re going to look at worship.  What is it really?  What should it look like?  What is my role?</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t miss it.  Bring somebody!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>EThOS is the <a title="British Library homepage" href="http://www.bl.ac.uk" target="_blank">British Library</a>&#8217;s thesis digitisation service which launched in January 2009 and has so far made over 24,000 theses available for immediate download. Some of the theses from the University of Bradford are also included and more get added gradually.</p>
<p>As the British Library say &#8220;the service allows researchers to access theses online, most for the first time, and showcases the quality of UK postgraduate research on a global scale&#8221;. The service has been very popular with researchers and the BL have announced that the digitisation times for theses not already available electronically have been reduced. It is also worth noting that the ETHoS service is able to harvest thesis entries from the University of Bradford research archive &#8211; <a href="http://bradscholars.brad.ac.uk">Bradford Scholars</a>.</p>

<p>This blog is my clothes confessional where I am going to try and document the way I dress. Yes, it is a little shallow. Maybe even a bit conceited. But I have good reasons.</p>
<p>It takes me forever to get dressed. Not in a &#8220;I can&#8217;t tie my shoelaces&#8221; kind of way, but in a &#8220;I want to wear these shoes, but I can&#8217;t if it&#8217;s raining, and not with that coat or if I have to walk too much, and I have no hat to match&#8221; kind of way.</p>
<p>So I am going to post outfits for my own documentation, to satisfy my curiosity of clothes and to see what the internet thinks. It is a little terrifying but I think I will learn something.</p>
<p>In short, I am reconciling with style one outfit at a time.</p>

<p>Queste due immagini sono per me paradigmatiche. La prima (la chiesa di Sant&#8217;Ivo del Borromini) mostra come nell&#8217;architettura barocca si diano due elementi antitetici e coimplicantesi allo stesso tempo: concavità e convessità. Questi ultimi sono a tutti gli effetti coloro che plasmano e vengono plasmati dalla luce. Infatti, come è facilmente riscontrabile dall&#8217;immagine la luce si riflette in modo assolutamente opposto a seconda della tipologia di superficie che colpisce. Essi si danno in questa immagine in assoluta contiguità, ma generano già da sempre uno scarto, una fenditura. Ecco il senso della seconda immagine, la fenditura, qui rappresentata da una faglia. La terra qui si torce, si piega, è sottoposta a forze che la muovono continuamente facendola collassare su se stessa e producendo questa separazione, questo scontro. Come anticipato questi sono solo immagini che cercano di rendere in modo paradigmatico qualcos&#8217;altro. Infatti ciò che vorrei qui solo abbozzare è la possibilità di parlare riguardo ad una duplice fenditura. Quale? Quella che si dà, a nostro avviso, nel processo genealogico-evolutivo dell&#8217;uomo. L&#8217;uomo si connota come quasi tutte le specie animali per un processo evolutivo specie specifico. Tale percorso pare però essere caratterizzato da due elementi particolari, due fenditure. Infatti la fase neonatale è paradigmaticamente definita anche fase dell&#8217;infanzia, ossia di un periodo della vita in cui l&#8217;uomo è ancora privo del linguaggio, meglio, non è ancora entrato nel linguaggio. Nel momento in cui il linguaggio viene usato comunicativamente il bambino entra completamente in un altro orizzonte di signific<em>azione</em> che è segnato da una fenditura insanabile con ciò che c&#8217;era prima. Tutto si modifica. Il suo approccio ora ha a che fare non più con la sperimentazione fonetica ma con l&#8217;<em>Ethos</em>. Il processo non termina qui, ma l&#8217;insorgere dell&#8217;io, che si percepisce come se stesso, spalanca la seconda fenditura. Ora si dà la possibilità di ri-guardare ciò che si è dato attraverso la possibilità del ritorno sul medesimo. Ecco quindi la duplice fenditura.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">A ação é o cerne do drama: os quatro cavaleiros que entram e tocam suas trombetas, os ladrões que surrupiam poucas moedas. O diretor troca a peruca loira por cabelos castanhos. Tudo, no teatro, é texto. As imagens são construídas por palavras e letras soltas, deixas exatas. Todos os gestos são exagerados como os advérbios. Todos os figurinos são adjetivos polissilábicos.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>- Pero nunca dejarán de ser Romeo y Julieta.<br />
- Y enamorados. ¿Usted cree que estaban enamorados? </em></p></blockquote>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Quase não há peças que não sejam longas poesias na obra de Federico García Lorca. O drama é a execução das impossibilidades, das tragédias, da melancolia dos versos – só o movimento, aquele que nos é repreendido capturar, é capaz de dar vazão a razão melodramática do autor espanhol. Digo razão para satisfazer Heidegger: a felicidade é<!--more--> superficial, é satisfação. Esquecer de refletir é felicidade. A melancolia é o pensar eterno, a reflexão interminável. Em Lorca, o questionamento da identidade sexual, do não lugar numa sociedade ditatorial ou, ainda, sobre os crimes cometidos. Dizem que não há crime se não há testemunha.</p>
<p>Não há testemunha sem o público.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>- Ciego, porque no eres hombre. Yo si soy um hombre. Um hombre, tan hombre que me desmayo cuando se despiertan los cazadores. Um hombre, tan hombre, que siento un dolor agudo em los diente cuando alguien quiebra um tallo, por diminuto que sea. Um gigante. Um gigante, tan gigante, que puedo bordar uma rosa em la uña de um niño recién nacido.</em></p></blockquote>
<p style="text-align:justify;">A pior das testemunhas e, conseqüentemente, dos públicos é aquele que senta do outro lado do divã. Diz que a melancolia se dá pela insatisfação do ego. Auto-acusação. <em>La Figura de Cascambeles</em> que se condena por toda a peça, o gigante que borda uma rosa na unha de um recém-nascido. Ainda completa com um delírio de inferioridade. Põe o interlocutor diante de Tanatos, o deus da morte, o arquétipo da pulsão pelo fim da vida. Não há muito tempo, a mesma voz dizia que a homossexualidade era desvio. Errou. É subversão.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Sobretudo, de clichês psicanalíticos. Ethos é a pulsão do sexo, da vida. Engano, pode muito bem ser a da morte. Consumir-se tem na sua semântica essa dualidade, o espírito e a razão que tanto balbucia o filósofo nazista. Em García Lorca, a lógica do sexo que mantém vivo é desconstruída: é ele que traz os personagens para mais próximos da morte, um êxtase final. É quando se traveste de Julieta, quando se mortificam as aparências a favor de uma essência (<em>grund</em>) – a redenção se dá pela aniquilação. É preciso que um dos atores mortifique-se como homem e surja com outra identidade para a consumação (ou não) da tragédia, para que o vilarejo se revolte diante da paixão de dois homens e decidam acabar com eles ali mesmo, no palco. Picadeiro que não se vê: tudo é velado. É o objeto perdido. Para Kierkegaard, a ansiedade e a melancolia são opostas ao medo: ver promover terror e horror, lógica do luto e da nostalgia. O Público promove a distopia, a busca por um objeto de desejo não identificado, invisível e intangível. Lorca põe o expectador no lugar dos protagonistas: é obrigado a se antecipar, desejar a ação que nunca se poderá encontrar ou possuir. É uma lógica dos espelhos entre personagens e transeuntes: não há solução para o drama a não ser a sua irresolução. É preciso ser Narciso: olhar para dentro de si, a imagem no lago, prender-se a uma não consumação do drama, da ação e imergir nela completamente.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">A melancolia é uma forma de resistência e tolerância: um questionar-se sem fim para não dar espaço para a dúvida alheia, proteger-se por estar eternamente em cheque. É impossibilitar todos os dramas, destronar todas as possibilidades. É a música que desaparece, a surdez pelo sussurro constante.</p>

It was terrific fun and most of the events were rip roaring successes. Inevitably we do hear of the odd event where things did not go completely smoothly. Few and far between as they are,  its always important to figure out what didn&#8217;t go according to plan and why.</p>
<p>The word ethos came up several times &#8211; more specifically how a host venue feels about a visiting author or illustrator.  It can vary from being the highlight of the month to a vague annoyance for venues where they grudgingly rearrange the furniture for the author and barely tolerate the presence of young readers.</p>
<p>Coincidentally two authors both posting about author care this week <a href="http://www.amandacraig.com/pages/blog_01/blog_item.asp?Blog_01ID=220">Amanda Craig on literary festivals </a>and<a href="http://sarahwebb.info/sarahs_blog/?p=281"> Sarah Webb on school and library events.</a> Two different styles of events  but  it would seem that word ethos is common to both their concerns&#8230;.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Madonna o Satana: il catèchon (III)]]></title>

un testo in grado di cambiare la percezione del presente, senza peraltro causare dipendenza.</p>
<p>La tesi generale e più importante &#8211; peraltro sottoscritta da Introvigne (cf. Avvenire, 17 dicembre 1994) &#8211; è che la nostra epoca sia caraterizzata da un revival neo-gnostico di tipo iniziatico ed occultista, dilagante presso le elites, e dalla matrice pregnamente anticlericale.<br />
Nello specifico Blondet va a scovare qualche setta tra le pagine dei libri dell&#8217;editrice Adelphi.</p>
<p>Tutto il testo è un esempio di demonologia applicata le cui istruzioni potrebbero servire a tutti.</p>
<p>Da esso traggo pezzi di prefazione, coi quali vado a chiudere la &#8211; dicamo &#8211; trilogia sul tema &#8220;Madonna e Satana&#8221;.</p>
<p>Blondet inizia da un&#8217;intervista a Cacciari. Un perfetto gnostico, come pressochè tutti i suoi colleghi del san Raffaele. L&#8217;intervista gravita attorno al tema dell&#8217;etica.<br />
Sostiene Cacciari: &#8220;<em>Ethos non indicava comportamenti soggettivi, indicava la &#8220;dimora&#8221; l&#8217;abitare in cui ogni uomo si trova alla nascita&#8230;non era più o meno etico per sua sceltà o volontà. Egli apparteneva a un&#8217;ethos</em>&#8221; (pp. 6-7). Ma duemila anni fa è avvenuta la frattura &#8220;<em>Il cristianesimo è stato diormpente rispetto ad ogni ethos&#8230;il cristiano non ha casa o è a casa sua dovunque&#8230;il cristianesimo non ha più radici in costumi tradizionali&#8230;si rivela essenzialmente sovversivo dell&#8217;Antichità</em>&#8220;. Per Cacciari questo inaugura la libertà dell&#8217;uomo, ma una libertà tragica e volta allla continua prevaricazione, sovversione e destituzione: una corsa verso l&#8217;abisso. Il cristianesimo è dunque responsabile del disordine attuale crescente. Ma Cacciari intuisce anche l&#8217;esistenza di un ancora al male, un freno dato dalla Chiesa, la quale assume su di sè non solo lo spirito evangelizzatore di origine giudaica, ma anche il polso castigatore e civilizzatore di tempra romana. Questo è il catèchon. &#8220;<em>Il papa deve smettere di fare il katéchon</em>!&#8221; esclama Cacciari.</p>
<p>Due di chiarimento:<br />
La prima su Cacciari. Cacciari è filosofo, per questo non può accettare la rivelazione sul peccato originale e sulla redenzione, per questo ai suoi occhi una libertà personale può essere solo monodirezionale. Se Cacciari fosse un mero illuminista direbbe tutta positiva questa libertà. Invece Cacciari le vede in negativo. Tutta. Salvo riconoscere il senso di un katéchon. Che però è un termine rivelato. Da qui ben traluce lo gnosticismo del filosofo. In un miscuglio di fideismi e riflessioni, aperte inderogabilmente al tema dell&#8217;emergere del potere occulto.<br />
La seconda sul katéchon. Katéchon significa &#8220;ciò che trattiene&#8221;. Ed è ciò che deve trattenere la manifestazione dell&#8217;Anticristo. Lo dice san Paolo nella II ai Tessalonicesi (2, 6 ss.). Finchè ci sarà il katéchon l&#8217;Anticristo non potrà manifestarsi. Viceversa l&#8217;anticristo prenderà il dominio. L&#8217;identificazione del katéchon è dubbia, ma i più additano &#8211; come anticipato &#8211; il ruolo di nuova Roma, cioè di impero teso a inglobare tutti senza discriminazioni aprioristiche, nonché di agente civilizzatore legato all&#8217;applicazione del diritto.</p>
<p>Ed eccoci a noi. Abbiamo visto fin qui con che facilità si confondano i ruoli della Madonna e di Satana. Tessalonicesi e Apocalisse mostrano che con la medesima facilità si confonderanno Cristo e l&#8217;Anticristo. L&#8217;uomo è fragile e abbisogna di sano discernimento.<br />
Il katéchon è lo strumento eccellente per tale discernimento: è la barriera di fatto, l&#8217;argine che salva, il fondamento che sostiene. Contro di esso da sempre si levano voci suadenti: &#8220;Cristo ci ha dato la libertà, perchè volete imporci le vostre leggi? Il vangelo è Cristo, il resto è spurio residuo di Roma!&#8221; Sono le voci degli eretici di ogni epoca, se ci badate. Coloro contro cui l&#8217;Inquisizione ha sempre potentemente agito. Sono i bestemmiatori dello Spirito: coloro cioè che confondono la Madonna e il Diavolo, il Paracleto e Lucifero, Cristo e l&#8217;Anticristo.</p>
<p>Dio non è un oggetto. A questo grido la Chiesa del &#8216;900 sta buttando a mare un bimillennio di sicurezze: metafisica, definizioni chiare, liturgie funzionali, lotta al male e al mondo, resistenza nel katéchon.<br />
Nulla pare dissuaderla dallo sfacelo. I suoi mentori attuali ne vedono già una gnostica liberazione spirituale dalle prigioni di carne &#8211; Bianchi, Martini, Quinzio, Mancuso,&#8230;</p>
<p>Intanto Cacciari-Blondet ricorda come, a prescindere dal katéchon ecclesiastico, il potere mondiale stia già smantellando i residui di ethos extra-cristiani: &#8220;<em>I pellerossa erano radicati nel loro ethos, e l&#8217;Americano vedeva nel loro ethos un sistema di non-libertà. Lo sterminio delle società sacrali, degli ethoi tradizionali, è prescritto dal liberalismo per il &#8220;bene&#8221; stesso dell&#8217;uomo</em>&#8220;. Così l&#8217;ethos Giapponese fu stroncato dalle atomiche, i totalitarismi europei &#8220;<em>forme di neo-paganesimo che cercavano di collegare la società a un ethos</em>&#8221; piegati dalla guerra mondiale, Vietnam, Somalia, il Golfo egualmente piagati. E oggi, possiamo ben aggiungere, tutto il medioriente in modo esplicito, africa e sudamerica in modo meno reclamizzato, e il suolo &#8220;occidentale&#8221; trafitto al suo interno nei valori limite (di ieri: Satrasburgo contro i crocifissi nelle scuole). Il katéchon appunto.<br />
Dunque fuori dalla Chiesa stanno demolendo gli ethoi tradizionali, mentre nei luoghi &#8216;contaminati&#8217; dalla Chiesa stanno rimuovendo il katéchon: per farlo però devono trovare traditori (magari in buona fede) che gli aprano dall&#8217;interno dei baluardi romani.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Está decido o futuro da representação dos estudantes do Centro de Comunicação Letras do Mackenzie. A partir do mês de dezembro a chapa Ethos, liderada por Eduardo Cabral (Duzão), ficará encarregada de guiar as ações pró estudantes de letras, publicidade e jornalismo.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Foi uma decisão apertadíssima para essa disputa de chapa única. 594 estudantes votaram ETHOS e outros 51 optaram pelo voto nulo, estabelecendo o cenário do pleito desse ano com 645 votos válidos. Lembrando que o CCL comporta, hoje, cerca de 4.500 alunos divididos em três períodos.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Por isso, o <em>JORNAL O JORNAL </em>vem por meio deste assumir sua postura em relação ao resultado e ao ano de gestão. Ao que nos parece, a chapa única na eleição deste ano trouxe consigo um tom de união entre os estudantes, ao menos aqueles que se dispuseram a participar da política estudantil deste ano. Trouxe também uma nova geração de alunos que pretendem brigar pelos direitos dos alunos, finalidade primeira de qualquer associação estudantil.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Somos o veículo oficial dos alunos do CCL. Os representamos tanto quanto o diretório. Isto posto, firmamos compromisso na luta pela exposição e transparência dessa gestão. Da mesma maneira que registramos momentos alegres e de sucesso de trabalho na última MackBixos, iremos cobrar da comissão executiva tudo aquilo que consta como função do diretório, redigido em seu Estatuto vigente. A começar pela prestação de contas das cartas proposta e camisetas distribuídas durante a campanha no fim da semana passada e início desta.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">O momento atual, depois do resultado de ontem, parece ser de maior liberdade para o aluno dentro do DACAM. Devido a isso, pedimos a todos que apareçam por lá e encontrem seu espaço, sua colocação, sua melhor maneira de ajudar. Frequentem o espaço destinados a vocês e conheçam aqueles que, a partir de agora, serão vocês perante a Instituição. Um bom ano para todos, e que as possibilidades se concretizem.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Hoje rola o processo eleitoral para a próxima gestão do DACAM (Diretório Acadêmico de Comunicação e Artes do Mackenzie). A chapa ETHOS concorre sozinha na disputa. Eduardo Cabral é o presidente da chapa que juntou-se a dois outros grupos, todos interessados em trabalhar pelo alunado.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">É muito importante o voto do aluno. Nunca na história do diretório houve um processo com número de votos que extrapolasse os 1500mil eleitores. No pleito do ano passado. 950 votos foram alçados em uma disputa que contava com as chapas ELLO, FALANGE e BRADO!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">O maior embate da história aconteceu na gestão 2006/2007, quando Falange Mackenzista, Staff e Simples diviram 1200 votos, segundo *Tiago, colaborador do blog em correção feita através de comentário que figura abaixo. Deu Staff, sob suspeita!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">São aqueles três grupos lá em cima, unidos, que formam a base executiva da chapa ETHOS. Nomes antigos e já bem batidos e conhecidos nos diretórios mackenzistas não figuram mais na realidade da política estudantil local. Talvez essa seja uma das grandes vitórias da atual conjuntura.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Vale a pena questionar todos. Não deixe de contribuir para a conscientização de seu próprio voto. Embasado ele valerá mais.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">&#8220;A parte que deu staff sob suspeita encaixou-se perfeitamente no texto, afinal, naquela eleição apareceram na urna mais de 50 votos não assinados pelos presidentes das chapas quando a chapa simples ganhava com uma diferença de aproximadamente 40 votos de vantagem em relação a segunda colocada, (o que era necessário para validar os votos). Na contagem dos votos estavam: Danilo (dandan) Atual presidente do dacam na época, Rafael (cocada) representante da chapa Staff, Torto representante da chapa staff, marcos (seu jorge) representante da chapa falange mackenzista, Tiago (tiaguinho) representante da chapa falange mackenzista, Luciano (piriquito) representante da chapa simples, fabio representante da chapa simples) e os 3 membros da Comissão especial de eleição (CEE), sendo eles: Karina (kaka), Welton e Ninja (comissão toda escolhida pela gestão que estava no poder do dacam “staff”). A contagem dos votos sem assinatura foi realizada pois a maioria presente na sala concordou com a contagem, apenas os represetantes das chapas falange mackenzista e simples não concordaram com a contagem dos votos e perderam por 6 a 4. No final da eleição a chapa Staff venceu, e como foi citado acima, de forma duvidosa.&#8221;</p>

<title><![CDATA[Global British identity]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>The recent BBC “Question Time” programme which featured Nick Griffin, the BNP leader, was watched by 8 million people- more than Strictly Come Dancing that week. I was really looking forward to it because I hoped it might cause so much heat that it would melt the chains which have been holding down freedom of speech and debate on the subjects of patriotism, nationality, race, immigration, multiculturalism and racism in this country. At least since the infamous “Rivers of Blood” speech by Enoch Powell in 1968, it has been ever more difficult to hold a rational, open, honest debate upon any of these subjects. In my view this is deeply harmful because the current state of affairs is not adaptive or sustainable.</p>
<p><strong>We need to evolve a healthy modern identity which is confidently British, European, Global, local, personal and human all at the same time.</strong> I suspect that most people know this but are afraid of what might happen if these hot topics are discussed freely. It is precisely because these subjects are so powerful, visceral and emotional that they can be dangerous. But <strong>the powerful suppressed emotions also represent new potential rising. Healthily harnessed, that power could be used as a positive force, but suppressed it is likely to continue to cause harm and will eventually break out in some dysfunctional way.</strong></p>
<p>The suppression of free speech on these subjects has exacerbated the intense fears and tensions which were evident before and during the programme. I found it bizarre to watch “anti-fascists” in a mob screaming and chanting something about building a bonfire and putting Nick Griffin on it. “Anti-hate” people were hating the BNP with intense, extreme emotional violence. “Anti-prejudice” people exposed their extreme intolerance and prejudice. People like Peter Hain spoke out against freedom of speech for the sake of democracy. The BNP simply lapped up all the attention. It was all very bizarre. I’m sure an alien watching would have found it rather odd and immature.</p>
<p>I watched the programme in a communal TV room with 3 other people I hadn’t met before. It amazed me how poor the dialogue was on the programme and in the room with 4 of us watching. It is as if the subjects raised are so dangerous and explosive, that virtually everyone sticks to the official politically-correct multicultural position, treading on eggshells, desperate to avoid the life-destroying accusation of “racist” which is routinely used to prevent anyone challenging the orthodoxy. It’s such an unsafe area of discussion that most people choose to avoid it.</p>
<p>The conversation we strangers had about the programme was highly polite, politically correct and stilted. We were all itching to have a lively debate but could not. Everyone was scared of saying the wrong thing. It gave me a glimpse of the way it must have been for Eastern Europeans to speak under communism or, today, for Iranians to speak about democracy. Essentially, you must accept politically-correct multiculturalism or you are a racist. There are no other options. Therefore the only people bold enough to speak outside the orthodoxy are either unsavoury extremists like Mr Griffin or the occasional brave non-white person like Trevor Phillips or Baroness Warsi, who are protected from the charge of racism, who can speak a few words of completely obvious common sense like the little boy who told the Emperor he has no clothes.</p>
<p>The Question Time programme itself was painful to watch. The quality of dialogue was so low, almost non-existent. Nick Griffin duly exposed himself as a lightweight with all sorts of stupid, silly and ridiculous ideas. He has said so many extreme and nasty things that he was easy to ridicule. He was not nearly substantial enough as an evil mastermind to carry all the hateful energy directed at him, so many people actually felt sorry for him as the underdog in a nasty witch hunt. He looked rather pathetic.</p>
<p>It was a great opportunity for the other politicians to step boldly into common sense by speaking some real truths about nationality, race, immigration and so on. Jack Straw and Chris Huhne spoke a garbled PC-oldspeak which said all the official multicultural line but which simply refused to say some basic truths and in doing so continue to allow the BNP to thrive. Baroness Warsi did challenge Jack Straw directly a couple of times, accusing him of being dishonest. He’s a very clever man and his body language showed he knew she was right. But she too only talked about immigration being about “numbers, pace and resources.” Why couldn’t they speak up for the need for a shared identity and a future vision?</p>
<p><strong>A country isn’t just an impersonal airport departure lounge or a barcode. It’s a community of people, humans who live together. I believe that we need to have an exciting identity in order to know who we are, how to live together and how to relate to others. We need a clear vision of our story- from where have we come, to where are we going and why should we collaborate with one another? Newcomers need an attractive club to join rather than just a passport and national insurance number.</strong></p>
<p>The traditional British story is uncomfortable with modern Britain because of it’s associations with Empire, race, religion and Britain as a global superpower. It explains where we came from but it doesn’t fit who we are or where we’re going. This old story has been repressed by politically-correct multiculturalism but it hasn’t yet been replaced by a new attractive alternative identity or inspiring visionary story. The people who were once proud to be British have been made to suppress their identity, to self-loathe and to celebrate the identities of others. Newcomers have been encouraged by multiculturalists to feel resentful, entitled and to maintain separate balkanised identities. Of course, this has created a very unstable, maladaptive and unsustainable state which is uncomfortable for everyone who is conscious.</p>
<p><strong>On the upside, there is a huge opportunity for the evolution of a new global identity which is inclusive of all the sub-parts. Britain was the first into industrial revolution and a great leader of science, democracy, freedom, capitalism, human rights and a major initiator of the modern globalisation, international law and international institutions. Britain, especially London, is becoming one of the most dynamic hubs of an emerging global civilisation.</strong></p>
<p>This combination of national and international identity is not new to Britain. Britain has actually been suppressing its local self-interest and identity for over 150 years. Even at the height of its Imperial power, the mother country had to promote the interests of the huge coalition of peoples who were the Empire and its wider support network in order to keep it together. They knew that it would inevitably come to an end and they wanted to make sure that the emerging new countries were friendly to Britain and joined an international system which promoted order, freedom, trade and stability.</p>
<p>The EU, UN, political correctness and multiculturalism and other such phenomena are a continuation of that theme. But they are all far from perfect and do not nourish the desire for identity, community, belonging, cohesion and visionary inspiration. <strong>If we are to gain support for an emerging post-racial, multi-cultural global civilisation, then we need to put much more energy and focus into that exciting vision of what we’re evolving towards if the old structures and attachments are to be gently allowed to fade into history.</strong></p>
<p>The identity vacuum we have now could be filled by the BNP, a creeping domestic authoritarianism; Islamic Fundamentalism, corporate power or a new foreign imperialism from China or elsewhere. <strong>The story can have a happy ending. The vacuum is also ripe to be filled by a British Obama to lead us into a post-racial British Global Patriotism as part of an emergent global civilisation, inclusive of its many parts.</strong></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>Representantes da chapa acreditam que “não há oposição quando os ideais são os mesmos”.</em></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">O Grupo Ethos surgiu a partir da unificação das três chapas que concorreram à gestão 2009 do DACAM na eleição ocorrida em 2008. Elas eram Brado!, Falange Mackenzista e Grupo Ello, chapa vencedora.  Segundo membros destas três, essa união se deu por haver entre elas ideais comuns, sendo o principal deles a melhoria do Diretório Acadêmico de Comunicação e Letras, desde sua representatividade perante a Universidade ao relacionamento aluno-diretório.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">A inovação proposta pelo grupo está não só na junção de três oposições, caso nunca antes visto no DACAM, como também no nome e na cor escolhidos. “Ethos” significa identidade de um grupo, ética, hábitos e harmonia, que, dentro do contexto Mackenzista, seria a convivência entre indivíduos diferentes que, unidos por um mesmo ideal, visam o melhor para o conjunto de forma limpa e honesta. Já a cor roxa tenta apagar qualquer vestígio que lembre as antigas chapas, mostrando que o que surge é um grupo novo. Por isso, as cores preta (Brado!), vermelha (Falange Mackenzista) e amarela (Grupo Ello) foram descartadas.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><!--more--></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Uma vez gestão, o Grupo Ethos se compromete com a transparência e com o cumprimento dos itens da Carta Proposta, distribuída aos alunos desde a última sexta-feira, 23/10. Foi o que disseram Eduardo Lima Cabral (21), 4º semestre de Publicidade, presidente pela Ethos, e Emerson Miranda (24), 6° e 5° semestres de Publicidade, 1° tesoureiro, procurados pelo O Jornal. Atualmente, Eduardo é 2º tesoureiro da Gestão Ello, e Emerson concorreu como presidente pela Falange Mackenzista em 2008. Na mesma chapa, foi secretário geral concorrendo em 2006, e presidente em 2007. Nunca foi gestão.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Como começou o seu envolvimento com política estudantil?</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Eduardo</strong>:Sempre fui envolvido com movimento estudantil, seja em grêmio e representações mais alternativas. Sempre me interessei pela boa representatividade proveniente de algo com autonomia e condizente com aquilo que tem de representar, e me esforço para sempre manter a boa ordem disso ao meu alcance.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Tico:</strong> Começou quando entrei no DACAM e vi um D.A jogado, literalmente uma porcaria. E fui procurar saber como poderia mudar aquela situação.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Como a chapa Ethos foi formada?</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Eduardo:</strong>Ethos é uma nova era perante todo este processo de unificação que três grandes pólos de representação estudantil criaram deixando de lado o partidarismo universitário e enfatizando de fato itens relevantes, como a melhoria de nosso Diretório. O grupo foi formado a partir de inúmeras discussões dentre todos os alunos que faziam parte de algum dos três pólos, e a unificação foi proveniente de questões ideológicas totalmente condizentes com o que o comum, ali presente, enfatizava. O grupo quer fortalecer o Diretório e a NOSSA representatividade estudantil, e não enxerga um por que de se bater dentre estudantes que tem em comum o mesmo ideal. É melhor unir forças para atender ao único motivo da existência de um Diretório Acadêmico, a nossa representatividade.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Ouvem-se rumores de que a junção das chapas Brado!, Falange Mackenzista e Grupo Ello foi, na verdade, um golpe para que não houvesse oposição e para que a participação na próxima gestão fosse garantida. O que tem a dizer a respeito?</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Eduardo</strong>: Isso de fato chega a ofender e, na minha opinião, pessoas que defendem esta opinião não sabem nem 1/3 dos últimos acontecimentos políticos que auxiliaram na concretização deste todo. Acho que todos deveriam se informar melhor, buscar saber ao invés de rotular sem prévia pesquisa. Todo este processo foi o mais transparente possível; a parte mais enfatizada foi de fato a do aluno, sem partidarismo, sem ataque. A idéia é equalizar tudo e trabalhar junto, de maneira mais fortalecedora. Teve Assembléia aberta, o Edital ainda se encontra espalhado pelo campus e no Diretório e, de fato, a autonomia era a palavra-chave de tudo. Bastava o interesse para se criar uma oposição, participar do novo grupo, buscar informação e etc&#8230;</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>O que o grupo espera dessa eleição?</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Eduardo:</strong> O grupo espera uma eleição agitada, questionamentos e, acima de tudo, participação. Nos mantivemos e nos mantemos motivados mesmo sendo chapa única, para assim, instigar a perplexidade de todos. É obvio que alunos não tão politizados chegam a julgar de maneira superficial tudo o que está acontecendo, encaram como manobra política, ou golpe, o que foge totalmente do contexto em que estas medidas foram tomadas. A idéia de se ter uma única chapa atendendo a três pólos estudantis diferentes, é de se ter maior cobrança e motivação interna; é a idéia de ninguém perder e todos fortalecerem a NOSSA representatividade. A ideologia da Democracia consiste na criação de um sistema perfeito que atenda a todos de uma maneira honesta, e é basicamente nesta idéia que o grupo tem focado: a ampliação e a melhoria de nossa imagem perante a Universidade, Mercado de Trabalho e não a ostentação de &#8220;vitória&#8221; sobre um outro grupo estudantil.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Tico: </strong>Espero que seja a melhor gestão já vista não só no DACAM como no Mackenzie. Pode cobrar heim&#8230; Hoje estou muito feliz com essa junção e acredito que pegamos o que cada chapa tinha de melhor e vamos implantar no DACAM. Queria pedir a todos do Jornal O JORNAL que nos ajudem a aproximarmo-nos dos alunos e fazermos a transformação tão sonhada por todos.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Eduardo</strong>: Me prontifico a contribuir ao máximo para que esta gestão faça história.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Tico: </strong>Ser o mais transparente possível, e fazer de tudo para cumprir o que está em nossa carta proposta. </p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em></em> <strong>O que acha do engajamento político dos mackenzista?</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Tico:</strong> Acho muito fraco. Os alunos pensam muito em festa e no seu próprio umbigo. Creio que isso acontece muito por causa das gestões passadas e pela política nacional. As coisas se refletem.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>O que espera dessa eleição?   </strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Tico:</strong> Eu espero uma eleição diferenciada, que possamos movimentar o CCL e que o aluno sinta a necessidade e a importância do voto. Queremos mais de 1.000 votos para mostrar que os alunos estão vendo tudo o que acontece.</p>

<div style="text-indent:10.5pt;margin:4.5pt 0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:9pt;"><span style="color:#343434;">We are positive that one could go on for hours just examining how much those people who are in &#8220;high-brow&#8221; positions receive the sweetest – of sweetheart deals. Just for brevity&#8217;s sake we mention just a few: Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) and his non-disclosure of properties owned and huge amounts of unpaid taxes; with as much whining per every media outlet, how is it that Speaker Nan&#8217; Pelosi (D-CA) is still flying around in her very own airline fleet courtesy of the United States Air Force ergo, us and you; Treasury secretary Geithner get his back taxes paid yet? Even the POTUS was the recipient of a sweetheart mortgage, amount other pleasantries. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-indent:10.5pt;margin:4.5pt 0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:9pt;"><span style="color:#343434;">But this article is not about those unscrupulous people who like beggars continue to thrust their hands forward and say, &#8220;More, more, and more.&#8221; This article is about how having some cash money will most assuredly get certain things accomplished by even the worst of the worst. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-indent:10.5pt;margin:4.5pt 0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:9pt;"><span style="color:#343434;">How on earth anyone in their right mind could argue for illegal aliens to have drivers&#8217; licenses is simply beyond us. Allow us to demonstrate what we&#8217;re talking about. This is from the <span style="color:#8b4513;"><strong>National Council of La Raza</strong>:</span> </span></span></div>
<div style="border-bottom:navy 4px solid;border-left:navy 1px solid;background-color:#f5f5dc;border-top:navy 2px solid;border-right:navy 3px solid;padding:15px;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><strong>&#8220;NCLR believes</strong> that a state-issued driver’s license should be reliable proof of an individual’s identity and proof of authorization to drive a motor vehicle; it <strong>should not</strong> be tied to an individual’s <strong>immigration status</strong>. There are legitimate and sound avenues for individuals to prove identity which would allow state Departments of Motor Vehicles to fulfill their mission of ensuring safe roads without creating new licensing requirements that would make the driver’s license a de facto proof of legal residency in the United States. </span></div>
<div style="text-indent:10.5pt;margin:4.5pt 0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:9pt;"><span style="color:#343434;">Therefore we ask, what&#8217;s up with that posture? First, <span style="color:#8b4513;"><strong>La Raza</strong></span> states that there is no distinction between who is here <strong>legally or illegally</strong>; moreover, they advocate that everyone in the United States should be allowed to get a drivers license. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-indent:10.5pt;margin:4.5pt 0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:9pt;"><span style="color:#343434;">Most assuredly – most of us who grew up in this country have a general regard for what is referred to as &#8216;the Rule of Law.&#8217; We also think the notion could be argued that one of the reasons why America has prospered is because of that very ideal – Rule of Law. It certainly has assisted most in civil rights; moreover, the dignity of life. Will continue next time&#8230; </span></span></div>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>If you are not familiar with <a href="http://ethos.bl.uk">EThOS</a> it is a British service providing dissertations from a number of institutions. When I first heard about it in March I requested copies of all the listed dissertations on Galatians. Unfortunately, I was notified today that one of them will not be available because the university has run out of funding for digitising dissertations. For the low low price of £40 I can still order it but the days of free seem to be over for at least one school. If you are interested feel free to drop some money on this one:</p>
