FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM Like mostly everyone who is into The Swell Season (Glen Hansar

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

Like mostly everyone who is into The Swell Season (Glen Hansard of The Frames with Markéta Irglová), I got into them via the movie ONCE. They came through Eugene after I had moved to town, but before I had gotten into them. My brother made me watch it when we were home for my other brother’s wedding (July 2008), and I suppose I should thank him for that. With The Swell Season’s original 2009 Strict Joy tour date press release, they didn’t have a Eugene date, but I’m glad they added one…

The opener was Doveman’s frontman Thomas Bartlett. He played about a half of an hour of whispy piano tunes. He seemed slightly shy, rarely looking towards the crowd… but maybe that’s just his style or how the piano was set up for him. Due to his whispy vocals, he struck me as similar to Jeff Hanson or slimmer, beardless Sam Beam of Iron & Wine – but on piano. He’s worked with The Frames, Swell Season, Antony & the Johnsons, Laurie Anderson, Arto Lindsay, The National, and Yoko Ono in the past – so that put him in my “he’s cool” book. Songs he played included “Angel’s Share ” (about whisky), “The Burgundy Stain” (about wine), and a medley to the Footloose soundtrack. The Footloose songs were fantastically mournful and sad. Classic!

The show opened with Glen and Markéta coming out and crouching down in front of the center mic. I wasn’t close enough to see if someone was playing the electronics / keyboards, but they started out with “Fallen From the Sky” – staying crouched down for the whole song. Luckily that didn’t continue for the rest of the show (or my continued photos would have been lame).

After the initial song, the band came out. The band was made up of the rest of The Frames, Glen’s band that was the precursor to Once and The Swell Season. I’m very rapidly becoming a serious fan of Glen’s vocals… which I suppose means that I need to get The Frames’ back catalog. Vocally Glen reminds me a lot of my buddy, Ashley Peacock. Most of the set was Glen on vocals, but Markéta covered lead vocals for “If You Want Me,” “Fantasy Man,” and “I Have Loved You Wrong.” As far as most powerful vocal performance… I’ll have to go with “Say It To Me Now,” where Glen played solo and off microphone. A few songs later, Glen was killin’ his guitar on Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks,” and he shredded at least a couple of strings – luckily his roadie was on top of things and brought out a replacement guitar right away.

Setlist: just over 2 hours

After leaving the venue, I bet everyone thought they got their money’s worth… a great show, great vocals by Glen & Markéta. While I know this was a break-up record of sort, I’m glad that they’re still able to work together. And while it may be a long shot, I hope they do continue to work together in the future.

As I drove down 11th avenue, I drove through the students and on to a more community based neighborh

As I drove down 11th avenue, I drove through the students and on to a more community based neighborhood, Jefferson Westside. The streets were fairly busy, and most of the streets and side streets were, too. There were houses in between businesses. There was everything from a bakery, Sweet Life, to a tire store, Wyatt’s Tires. From what it seemed like, the Jefferson Westside Neighborhood seemed like a fairly busy and not given a chance to be a tight-nit community like other neighborhoods. When doing the new neighborhood blog on the Jefferson Westside neighborhood, I decided to check out the Lane County Historical Society Museum.
Lane County Historical Society Museum is located on the corner of 13th and Jefferson. It was hard to find amidst the other random businesses nearby with a few houses in between. It cost a few bucks to get in, but over all I would say it was worth it.

Lane County Historical Museum

Just like every town, Eugene started from somewhere. It is an old town, and the museum shows the history of how the city was built. There were photographs everywhere, and archives of records of past businesses, projects, schools, and especially families. There was also an interesting archive of old newspaper articles that was included as well.

Photograph from the newer exhibit, explaining the diverse people that have settled in Oregon.

Most of the photos were of families and of the production of Lane County, for example, building streets, neighborhoods, businesses, etc.
The non-profit organization that runs the museum not only shows the history throughout its exhibits and archives, but also has a tri-yearly newsletter that explains the history of Lane County called the “Lane County Historian”.
To spice up the exhibits a bit, there was a cafe and a gift shop for visitors. The gift shop contained different pieces of artwork, postcards, different books (children books, too) about Lane County and Oregon and even old-fashioned children toys.
The museum also explains the history of the Oregon Trail and Lewis and Clark’s expedition throughout Oregon, and how Lane County was involved.
Not only is the museum for visitors, residents of the Eugene area, and tourists, but is also a popular site for school field trips. The museum gives teachers different slide-shows to choose from to teach their students about Lane County when they take their students to the museum.
As exciting as a town’s museum can get, I decided to leave after about 20 minutes of browsing around. The neighborhood seemed fairly busy and not very family or community friendly. From what I noticed, it would not be a neighborhood where I would get to know my neighbors very well or have an easy time settling down.

One of the permanent exhibits inside the museum.

I was tempted to put in another picture of Kyung Tae and Taek Soo, but thought it was time to share

I was tempted to put in another picture of Kyung Tae and Taek Soo, but thought it was time to share a picture of the main couple. And I think this is worthy of the lead screencap, as it’s the first time that I’ve actually felt chemistry between Sang Eun and Yeo Joon.

I still haven’t decided whether I like Creating Destiny or not. Every time it does something great to swing me towards the “like” side, it does something else to pull me back to the “dislike” side. This was another one of those episodes. A couple of good moments and a couple of frustrating moments… so lukewarm.

Clazziquai: COLOR YOUR SOUL (Download)
Yes Creating Destiny. I’m talking to you!

Sang Eun and Yeo Joon are excited that the adults have bought into their fib and did not mention marriage to them for the first. They give each other a high five to commemorate the event.

I find the whole betrothal thing to be pretty ridiculous but seeing the start of chemistry is winning me over to the couple. So to commemorate that event, I’ve decided to let go of the betrothal detail and enjoy the moment. I think this is the first time that we get a truly happy face from Yeo Joon! (And I write this with no sarcasm. Yay! I’ve been waiting to see him smile.)

It was going so well… until we have our cliche kdrama moment: a contract. It’s a tad bit better than other dramas since Sang Eun is a lawyer and it kinda makes sense that she would want a contract. (But it’s a really tiny tiny tad.)

The two of them head to a cafe together to draw up their fake dating contract.
1. We will not fall for each other.
2. We will go on 1 date per week.
3. We will touch each other (skinship) as little as possible.
4. We will not create a situation that will cause the adults to have doubts.
5. Whoever breaks something in the contract will have to pay 100,000 won to the other person.
6. We will keep our fake relationship a secret from everyone.
7. If the adults find out about the fake relationship, whoever was responsible will take the full blame. And as punishment, they will have to get married first.

They write the contract and shake on it. (I can’t comment on this without being snarky, so I’ll just say that I don’t like contracts in rom-com kdramas and be done with it.)

Taek Soo hands over their extra apartment over to the Hans. (Geum Ja was planning on giving the apartment to Yeo Joon when he got married and is furious when she finds out.) Not only did Taek Soo provide the apartment, but he’s also ordered all the furniture for it as well. Apparently, the Hans gave their dduk store to the Kims when they immigrated to Australia and Taek Soo is forever thankful for their generosity. It’s really sweet watching the 2 dads.

TS: Let’s see. What else will you need?
KT: You really don’t have to go through all this trouble.
TS: I’m doing it because I want to. I couldn’t do anything for you when you left for Australia. But now that you’re back here, there’s nothing I can’t do for you.
KT: Oy vey. Thanks…

They are so my favorite couple. The only that bothers me a little is Taek Soo’s treatment of Geum Ja. Why doesn’t he decide these things with his wife? Or atleast tell her in advance! I guess it’s a Korean male thing, but I would beat up my husband if he gave someone our apartment.

Sang Eun and Kyung Tae go to the Kims to pick up Sang Eun’s stuff. The 2 men continue their lovefest as Geum Ja watches on with little patience. When she tries to bring up the apartment to Kyung Tae, Taek Soo jumps in and says that giving them the apartment was her idea all along.

KT: Sister-in-law. Thank you so much. I promise to pay you back for the generosity you’ve showered on us.
TS: What are you talking about? In order for me to pay back your generosity, I’ll have to carry you on my back for the rest of my life.

OMG. I love these 2. And Geum Ja is pretty nice, because she just let’s it pass without a real complaint. (Although she decides to take revenge later by not putting out his blankets. That’s so wrong. He gives someone an apartment and all she can do is not put out the blanket?)

Sang Eun gets her bags and says her official farewell by giving Grandma Jeong a bit bow and hug, thanking her for taking care of her while she lived with them. The next morning during breakfast, Grandma Jeong asks why Yeo Joon she doesn’t see him and Sang Eun dating. He looks a little guilty but replies that he’s meeting her tomorrow. Upstairs, Yeo Joon takes a peek into Sang Eun’s room and feels a little nostalgia. He smiles at himself and (seemingly) gives Sang Eun a call.

Yay! It finally looks like someone’s developing a little feeling for the other person! And I love it that it’s the guy first. (I feel like Kdramas usually have the girl realizing their feelings first.)

The faux couple meet together for a date but have no idea what to do together. So Yeo Joon calls his gigolo friend Gyu Han for help, who says “Sleep together. That’s the best way to figure out the other person.” Next is Sang Eun, who calls Hyo Eun to ask for advice. She must have just talked to Gyu Han, because she has the same advice. “Sleep with him. That’s the best way to get close with the person you’re going to marry.” Sang Eun and Yeo Joon are a little embarrassed and drink gulps of coffee, trying to figure out what to do next.

And it looks like Yeo Joon won out because they end up at a lecture. Sang Eun is upset to have to sit through the lecture, but Yeo Joon says that he had to come for his senior. And to make matters worse, he tells Sang Eun to act like she doesn’t know him, so that no weird rumors make its way to the hospital. Not surprisingly, she falls asleep and very soundly. She’s in such deep sleep that Yeo Joon’s efforts to wake her up doesn’t work.

Hae Sung calls Yoon Hee to meet him for lunch and tells her about Taek Soo’s visit to his office. She leaves him, upset that her father felt the need to beg on his knees for her sake.

Meanwhile Jin Hee finds a photo of Gyu Han with Yoon Hee and Jin Ju in his apartment, and heads over to the dduk cafe to confront Yoon Hee. She gets even more upset, seeing Gyu Han there with her in the middle of the day. (ARGH!! Why are so many kdramas like this? Why doesn’t she talk to her son instead of trying to duke it out with Yoon Hee???)

As Jin Hee is yelling at Yoon Hee, Geum Ja comes up to the store to witness the verbal abuse. The two “friends” get into an argument before their children pull them apart. (Double ARGH! Why do the 2 women friends have such a catty relationship? I wish kdramas would stop portraying women this way. We can have friendships and lovefests like Taek Soo and Kyung Tae!)

I found these scenes to be so bothersome, that I barely noticed some of the good things happening. Watching it second time around, did help me to appreciate the way that the drama portrays Yoon Hee. A single mom, facing the difficulties of raising a child in patriarchal society. They do a good job of showing Yoon Hee as a competent woman, who’s doing everything right in raising a precocious daughter, but still receives society’s judgment. She might as well wear an A on her chest.

Back at the lecture hall, Sang Eun runs into Se Won, who’s in the building for a meeting. Seeing the 2 together, a jealous Yeo Joon comes over and puts his arm around her. (LOL. What happened to keeping your distance? And Sang Eun, you’d better ask for your 100,000 won for the gratuitous “skinship!” He’s a little hesitant to take her for himself, but doesn’t want to give her up to someone else either. Oh the dilemma.) The 2 men fight over each other.

SW: I fell in love with you when I was 11.
YJ: That’s too bad. We were promised to each other from birth.

Yeo Joon pulls her away and tells her to stop working at Se Won’s academy, which lead to a tiff. Hee-hee. I like the 3 piece hottie all jealous. And it’s funny how he still opens the door for her while they’re arguing.

Hmm… I found their constant bickering to be so annoying in the beginning. Have they worn me down? I find it to be kind of cute. Maybe it’s because the there is now a hint of attraction underlying them, and not just annoyance.

The couple runs into the 3 men as Yeo Joon drops off Sang Eun. They find out that the two of them haven’t eaten dinner, and Yeo Joon get the stink eye from Grandpa Yoon and Taek Soo. Kyung Tae invites Yeo Joon upstairs for some food. As he walks into the apartment, Hyo Eun surprises him with her greeting, “Hello brother-in-law!” And she gets him to agree to take the 2 sisters on a city tour over the weekend. (I just noticed that Yeo Joon and Sang Eun are wearing the same shade of purple. Brilliant Legacy is definitely leaving a legacy of matching clothes for to-be couples…)

After the guests leave, the girls are back in their room talking about Yeo Joon. Hyo Eun is no dummy and has an idea about their fake relationship.

HE: Unni, let me give you an advice. If you’re serious about pretending to date, get a cellphone. Who dates without a cellphone these days?

She’s so cute! I want more Hyo Eun!!

Yoon Hee gives in and follows Hae Sung’s wishes to be introduced to Jin Ju as her dad. A nervous Hae Sung brings a humongous blue bear to meet his daughter.

YH: Jin Ju, where did I say your dad was?
JJ: America.
YH: Jin Ju, why is your dad in America?
JJ: Because he has a family besides mommy and me. And he has to be there to live with them.
YH: That’s right. But he came to see you today.
JJ: Then this ahjusshi is my daddy?
YH: Yes.
JJ: I see. Hello.
HS: Oh OK. Hi.
JJ: Then are you going to live with us now?
HS: That’s…
YH: No not that. I told you, Jin Ju you’ll live with me. And daddy lives with his family.
JJ: Then mom, can I go see Gyu Han ahjussi?
YH: Yes. You can go.
JJ: Daddy, bye-bye!

For the first time, Hae Sung seems actually nervous and dumbfounded. She barely seems effected by meeting her dad and basically runs off to live her own life.

At home, Jin Ju spills the beans about meeting her daddy. Taek Soo and Geum Ja are worried but Yoon Hee assures them that it would have occurred at some point. She also asks her dad not to bow his head to Hae Sung for any reason going forward. But Taek Soo responds, “You don’t think I can do that for my child? … It’s not a big deal. If you can be happy, I can do anything.”

Say all you want about the Kims, but they are amazingly supportive of one another. I love how the family bonds together as Yoon Hee suffers, regardless of how difficult the situation.

Yeo Joon is called into the hospital on his day off. The day of the city tour with the Han sisters. Hye Rim remembers seeing Se Won with Sang Eun and seeing him again at Sung Hyun department and jumps to her own conclusion, which she is eager to share with Yeo Joon. She immediately runs to the hospital and tells Yeo Joon about the connection, and implies that Sang Eun must have told Se Won about Jin Ju and caused all this trouble.

With Yeo Joon out of the picture, Se Won swoops in to be their tour guide. He takes them around the city and shopping, making Hyo Eun comment, “It’s really good that we came to Korea. How else would you have so many men around you?” Haha. Sang Eun tells her that Se Won is just a friend, but Hyu Eun implies that he’s got other motives.

When they arrive at Sang Eun’s place, a fiery Yeo Joon arrives, ready to pull her away. But this time Se Won stops him, asking “What are you doing? And this to a woman?”

Alright! Let’s have some angst! I’m not sure if it’ll be good angst or just wires crossed angst, but I’m ready for something to happen with the love triangle!

And just to end on a good note, here’s an awesome picture of the 3 musketeers! I love this picture!

I love these 2!!! Now they the Hans are in Korea, I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of them.

I love these 2!!! Now they the Hans are in Korea, I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of them. It makes me so happy to watch them.

This is a drama about 2 families through and through. As much as the destiny being created is for 2 people (Sang Eun and Yeo Joon), I’d like to believe that it’s also about the destinies of the 3 families. I guess technically 4 counting the Kangs. As much as I don’t “get” the main couple (more on this below), I totally relate with the familial relationships.

(Disclaimer: I’ve watched until episode 12, so I do know that the SE/YJ line heats up a bit. But I’m trying to be partial and keep my comments as I felt back when watching episode 9…)

Jo Won Sun: DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO (Download)

Sang Eun’s family arrives and they immediately start pushing marriage. Sang Eun’s grandpa either really dislikes Yeo Joon’s grandmother or he’s crazed from the trip, because he’s almost ready to throw a punch at grandma. Well, she does talk about his death…

Yeo Joon pulls Sang Eun aside, worried that the adults may be scheming behind their backs. He thinks his parents may have invited Sang Eun’s family to Korea for a wedding. Oh the ridiculousness.

They decide to meet outside to plot on their own. Unfortunately, it’s derailed because Hye Rim shows up. She’s heard about the Han family’s move to Korea and the impending wedding. She meets Sang Eun outside, and slaps her. Sang Eun is shocked beyond belief. “Are you crazy?” Hye Rim yells some nonsense about Sang Eun not keeping her words, etc. She tries to keep the upper hand and leave, but Sang Eun doesn’t let her. She grabs her arm.

SE: Don’t you think you should atleast apologize? I’m not a nice enough person to just let your violence actions pass.

As Sang Eun holds onto Hye Rim’s arm, Yeo Joon sees them. He thinks that Sang Eun is taking things out on Hye Rim and defends her. She does a complete 180 in front of our eyes and turns into a weak, helpless girl. Sang Eun is dumbfounded by her actions and just watches, not believing what she’s seeing. Yeo Joon stands up for Hye Rim and scolds Sang Eun. But he’s just fanning the flame at this point.

SE: If you don’t know what you’re talking about, just shut up! If you want to talk to your great dong-seng in the future, you just talk with her. Don’t get me involved. Now that I look at it, the two of you are good for each other.

It’s Yeo Joon’s turn to be dumbfounded, and stands bewildered as an angry Sang Eun storms off.

So Hye Rim does her best rendition of the cliched crazy calculating bitch in this scene. Earlier on in the series, I thought she could have gotten some depth to her character. I really liked the way she went to see Yeo Joon’s family and threw herself into the marriage candidate mix. But alas, she’s turning into the typical secondary character.

Back home, her grandpa sees her face and immediately notices her red cheek. Oddly, he concludes that she must have been slapped by somebody, accusing Yeo Joon of domestic violence. Sang Eun denies it and says that she just hit something with her face. Yeo Joon still looks confused, realizing that something happened but not quite able to figure it out.

Yay! Hyo Eun’s here! She finds the room that she’s likes the most and immediately goes to sleep. Which room you ask? Jin Ju’s all pink room, of course. Sang Eun runs into to get her sister out. Hyo Eun gets up, revealing her pink sweater dress and gives Sang Eun a big hug, yelling “Victoria!” (Love it!)

She then introduces herself to Jin Ju and gives her a big thumbs up for the pink room, who returns her favor by telling her mom that Hyu Eun unni is pretty.

Taek Soo insists that the Hans stay at their place, instead of going to a hotel. Geum Ja is chagrined at his insensitivity and complains about having to feed 3 more mouths. It’s so cute to see Taek Soo and Kyung Tae. They are definitely my favorite couple of this drama to date. Kyung Tae wants to go sleep in a hotel and not be a burden on the family (and Geum Ja) but Taek Soo demands that they stay at the house with them.

So the 2 men share Yeo Joon’s room and the 2 sisters stay in the matching guest room. It’s cute to see the 2 sisters in bed together. (It really is nice to sleep with your sister if you haven’t done it in awhile.) Hyo Eun, who was forced to come to Korea, comments, “Yeo Joon oppa is good looking. He’s cute and has a sexy side. Unni, if the other men in Korea are like Yeo Joon oppa, I think I can stand it here.”

Sang Eun heads to a new teaching job at the Sunghyun academy. A quite famous one with Manager Kang Se Won. Yeo Joon drops her off at work and they get into their usual tiff along the way.

How did you get a job like that?
Are you really dating a girl like that?
Why do you talk about others behind their back?
Why should I care what you think?

You know… the usual morning banter.

Gyu Han takes Yoon Hee and Jin Ju to the nearby palace for some pictures. They look like a happy little family until Hae Sung shows up with his signature, “But I’M her dad!” Yoon Hee sends her daughter home with Gyu Han.

HS: What’s your relationship with that guy? By chance, are you dating?
YH: That’s none of your business. Who I date has nothing to do with you.
…
HS: I don’t like my daughter hanging around that guy.
YH: That’s too bad. I don’t like you around my daughter.

Talk about a sense of entitlement. OK. I can understand that he wants his daughter to know who her father is. But what’s with the accusatory tone at Yoon Hee? Did he actually think that she wouldn’t have dated anyone in 6 years???

Not only is he an ass, he’s a selfish ass. He has the words “I’m her dad” glued to his lips but hasn’t once used, “She’s my daughter” with the same aggravated tone. He must think the world revolves around him. As I said, it’s going to take a whole lot to redeem this character. I’ll be pissed off to hell if Yoon Hee gets together with Hae Sung.

Grandpa Yoon has the same thought.

Grandpa: Do you know what a real family is? Names written on a piece of paper doesn’t make a family. Even if they don’t share the same blood, they share the same heart. That’s a real family… Do you know what it means to be a parent? A parent is someone who puts their child first. If a sword is coming from the front, they carry the child on their back and run. And if a bullet is coming from behind, they hold the child in their arms to run away. It seems like you don’t think of Jin Ju as a child, but as an item.

When they return home, Grandpa Yoon has words for Tae Kyung who is seemingly at wits end. “You have to live for your child. You’ve even been in the line of fire. And you’re scared of a person? She’s your child. Whether they’re young or old, they’re still your child. You have to take responsibility for your whole life and hug them and lead them on. Do everything you can instead of just sitting idly by.”

I love it. I’m not a parent yet but when I have kids, I’d like to be that kind of mom.

Yeo Joon picks up Sang Eun at the office for a little chat. He feels like they’re at the end of their rope and comes up with a great idea.

YJ: Let’s just date.
SE: The 2 of us? I don’t want to.
YJ: Do you think it’s because I like it? We have no other way. I’m already busy as it is. I don’t need to have something like this eat up my time.
SE: Still, how can we date?
YJ: Fake. Let’s just pretend to date. I don’t want it for real either. If we say that we’re dating, our family won’t say anything more.

Sang Eun is placed between a rock and a hard place. Or is she? This is where the drama fails me. Why are these 2 capable and strong people being tossed around by their family? No matter how forceful the adults are, why do they need to get into these shenanigans? Couldn’t we have a more realistic storyline?

I want to like them. I really do. But finding the cornerstone of the drama’s storyline a bit absurd isn’t helping their likability factor. Why do I keep watching? Because of scenes like this…

Taek Soo goes to see Hae Sung. He’s unable to get in because he hasn’t made an appointment. Fortunately, Se Won sees him takes him upstairs. Taek Soo tells Hae Sung about the hardships that Yoon Hee faced after he left. She had to give up the job she loved, cried every night, and almost died while having the baby. He then does the unthinkable, getting down on his knees and begging him to leave Yoon Hee alone and to not make her cry anymore.

He then comes to Yoon Hee’s dduk cafe to give her words of encouragement.

TS: Do you know how thankful I am that you’re my daughter? When your mom had you, she cried alot, saying that she wanted to have a boy for our family. She was disappointed. Your grandmother too. Everyone had said she was carrying a boy. But I wasn’t disappointed. When our eyes first met, I thought – now she’s my child. I know you’re my daughter, but you were so pretty.
YH: I wasn’t that pretty.
TS: No, no. Everyone said you were the prettiest at the hospital.
YH: More than Jin Ju? That’s what everyone said about Jin Ju.
TS: She doesn’t compare to you. You weren’t just pretty, but so sweet! Jin Ju resembles your grandmother and has a stubborn side.

He succeeds in making her laugh and leaves. “Yoon Hee. Don’t worry about anything.” Tae Soo is so great. He’s already a part of my favorite duo, and is so sweet and strong in how he handles the situation.

The adults sit around talking about Sang Eun and Yeo Joon. Grandpa Yoon says that he was a bit crazy from the travel and wasn’t thinking straight. He confirms his earlier thoughts and says that if Sang Eun doesn’t like Yeo Joon, there’s no reason to keep pressuring them.

When Yeo Joon responds, “But I like Yeo Joon for some reason,” Grandpa Yoon bellows, “Are you the one getting married? Shut up. If you want to follow your friend, you can do it. And leave Sang Eun alone!”

When the “couple” arrives, they tell the family the great news. They say, “We’ll listen to the adults and do as you say.” Tae Kyung, Taek Soo, and Grandma all get worked up, already marrying the 2 off in their heads. Yeo Joon then adds, “Marriage is too fast. We’re going to date with marriage in mind. We should get to know each other more before getting married.” The adults look a little suspicious but decide to take their words at face value.

And Yeo Joon and Sang Eun run off together to revel in their victory.

New Zealand is one giant sweet tooth. It has one of the highest per capita rates of sugar ingestion

New Zealand is one giant sweet tooth. It has one of the highest per capita rates of sugar ingestion (tasty turn of phrase, huh?) in the world. Everywhere one turns is sugar—in the flavored milks (I haven’t tried lime yet), in the bakeries (ubiquitous, serving all kinds of cakes and pastries including layered bar cookies called “slices”—a well-made caramel chocolate slice is Nirvana), in the stores (cookie and candy aisles beyond an American’s wildest dreams), no doubt in large part because of the British heritage; if memory serves, in Beard on Pasta (my copy’s back in Portland, so I can’t consult it right now), James introduces an English macaroni pudding by writing “You can trust the English on sweets. It’s really good.”

The British heritage includes Cadbury bars (not the same in the US as elsewhere), so I noticed when Ferrero spA, the Italian confectioner that’s made a mint with Ferrero Rocher, Nutella (to which my late mother was and youngest daughter is addicted but not I, even having grown up in the filbert capital of the world—Eugene, Oregon (where I walked to grade school under a row of filbert trees, and attended a high school built on the site of a late filbert orchard), for those of you out of the loop—and I don’t do hazelnuts if I can possibly avoid them), TicTacs and assorted other candies, decided to try, with Hershey, to buy Cadbury.

As I suffer considerably from nostalgia (doesn’t that sound a lot like neuralgia?), I have never quite forgiven Hershey for abandoning its thin milk chocolate bars, which melted quickly and made great S’mores possible. (Now that you can’t get them, I recommend my mother-in-law’s alternative—put the roasted marshmallow inside a split fudge sandwich cookie.) There’s plenty of Cadbury available here, but I haven’t bought any yet, since most of it sounds too milky for my dark-chocolate tastes. And if you think I’ve become a chocolate snob, rest assured I have relapses—Tim Tams (a chocolate-coated sandwich cookie from Australia) were my respite (and downfall) during the first few weeks of setting up housekeeping in a new hemisphere. They’re available from Pepperidge Farms in the US for the next few months; they may become your guilty pleasure, too.

Daggone, she’s perrrty… This isn’t huge news or anything but Eugene just looked so

Daggone, she’s perrrty… This isn’t huge news or anything but Eugene just looked so pretty in this picture. And I wanted to take a moment to let you know that I haven’t forgotten about my recaps!

I enjoyed the last 2 episodes of Creating Destiny, and expect to have them up pretty soon. I’ve been a little preoccupied with subs (YB 14! It’ll hopefully be available at WITH S2 next week) and finishing up a Smile, You recap for dramabeans. (That should also be up in the next day or two.)

In other totally random Creating Destiny news, Jung Suk Won (Gyu Han) was recently in an episode of “Dream Team 2″ (The Resurrection) and cut his finger in a BMX race. It wasn’t a huge cut, but he had to receive treatment before coming back on set. His heroism was greeted with a round of applause by the staff. Ah… I remember Dream Team. And Dream Team = JUN JIN. (Hope you’re having fun in the army!)

Below the jump is another tantalizing photo of Eugene. And not to ignore the three-piece hottie, Ki Tae Kyung is also included.

Since I put up these pictures… Eugene is the new face of Benefit Korea, a cosmetics company headquartered in San Francisco. They are the creators of Benetint, the awesome lip and cheek stain. (No, I’m not getting paid. It really works!) They’re also the ones with the really girly and colorful packaging, and can be found at a Sephora near you.

The other “news” on Eugene is the Sang Eun-inspired new hairstyle fad, known as the “bling perm.” (It seems like I read a lot of nonsense, but I can’t help but see the headlines!) And apparently, I gotta share what I read.

And without further ado, here’s Ki Tae Young in all his glory.

My sister Echo has been playing music for most of her life. She’s part of a growing arts scen

My sister Echo has been playing music for most of her life. She’s part of a growing arts scene in Riverview, one that is beginning to thrive despite the Alto threat. So popular are the performances they put on at the makeshift arts centre that the mob have been powerless to stop them. The artists from the artists’ colony have helped provide drapes, costumes, posters and make-up for the concerts the local musicians put on. It has kept some of them out of the Altos’ firing line: they are simply too popular with the people. The Altos know there is increasing unrest about their activities and were they to cause enough unrest, it’s possible people could overthrow their regime.

Echo always loved our grandad’s stories about music and arts in the before times. He talked about things called theatre and films, where people would tell stories and they’d act and move and dress up, and people would pay to watch and be entertained… it sounds rather fantastical, but Echo loved it. She and some of her friends have dreams of creating their own shows one day, and Echo has started composing the music already.

They are planning a small show to open in a few months. I couldn’t be prouder of my big sister, yet also sad – it is time for her to move on and spend time with others who share her dream.

Seeing Echo achieve her heart’s desire has enabled me to make some big decisions. I love Eugene, and I asked him to marry me. I was thrilled when he accepted. We had a long, frank discussion about my aunt Gloria and Eugene and I came to an agreement about what we would ask her to do.

Eugene also decided to leave the police force. Echo has inspired him, too. He has always dreamed of playing music and the arts centre are starting to employ a small number of musicians. My sister recommended him and so he’s started working there. He is so excited by the possibilities it opens up to him.

I am so fortunate to have someone to share my life with; to share this responsibility with. Sometimes I wonder if running this household and carrying on the good work my grandfather began is too big a task for me. I want so much to honour him and my mother, to honour all those who have gone before us, but I have never known if I was up to it. Now I know that I will be OK – I have a partner by my side who I trust completely, and who trusts my judgement. He has given me the confidence in myself to make decisions about our future.

Eugene is also a great cook, which comes as a relief. Dad used to do all the cooking and since he died, we have been existing on burnt hot dogs much of the time – Eugene makes them just right every time. I miss dad so much, but Eugene cooks hot dogs almost as well as he did, and tasting them helps me remember him, and smile.

I had a long talk to Gloria when I discovered she was thieving. She and I both want the same thing: to see the reign of the Alto mob come to an end, but I can’t condone her actions. As a police officer, it would compromise me too much. However, I can’t throw her out whilst Hirogen is so young. It would be unfair to expect Gloria and Davros to start afresh when my cousin is still so young and vulnerable. We decided she would stay here until Hirogen was a little older, and she wouldn’t talk about her activities with the rest of the family. I can’t pretend I am happy to have a thief under my roof, and I know if work found out about it, it could cost me my job – and could possibly cost my sister Ezri hers, too. I just hope Gloria is careful.

I have been concerned about my little brother Gaius for a while, but it is so hard to talk to him. He keeps shutting down and becomng surly if I ask him anything about his activities. This can’t go on – this is my home and he needs to treat it, to treat this family, with respect.

Yet mum dotes on him. He is her youngest, her baby. She is so proud of the rest of us, and I know that if she was to discover Gaius was keeping secrets, potentially dangerous secrets, she would be heartbroken.

Whilst there is trouble here, there is also great celebration. Ezri is working undercover and enjoying it a great deal. I feel nervous every time I know she is on an assignment. With her skin tone she stands out, only a small percentage of the population here have the same affliction, and the Altos have spies everywhere. Like our aunt Cas, though, she seems to live a charmed life; dodging danger when others in the same position have encountered assault, beatings or worse.

Since Echo and her friends began performing at the arts centre, a real mood has shifted here in Riverview. People are making things for each other, indulging creativity in ways we hadn’t known before, or hadn’t dared try. Several of Echo’s friends make an income from making clothing – this is a new indulgence; we have always had to make do with hand-me-downs from the survivors; but they have found ways to convert old fabrics into something new and beautiful. There are even a few people who cut and style hair. Apparently one of the survivors was something called a ‘hairdresser’ in the before time and had shared the skill with her descendants, and now people are feeling braver, the skill is spreading.

Another thing that has changed is that people want to celebrate more. One of Cas’s friends has taken up baking cakes and the Altos have given up trying to monitor people’s gatherings at home, so we decided to hold our very first party to celebrate Hirogen’s birthday.

We invited the whole family, and it was so wonderful to have everyone together. Mum seemed so overwhelmed that we were all here and were all safe.

I looked at them all and realised how fortunate I am to have been brought up in this family. So many families here have been torn apart by sickness, by fire, by people being beaten by the Altos, or by people joining the Alto mob. There is a lot here that could damage a person’s soul, could render them hard or damaged for life. I know my own father was scarred deeply by the things he went through here, and there are people hurt far worse than he was. My family are strong people, good people and we have stayed united. That’s so rare in this town, and I hold it so dearly.

Hirogen decided that what she wanted for her birthday was a haircut and some new clothes, so we asked some favours of the people in town who could help…

She was so pleased with her new look: she is such a beautiful girl. Davros and Gloria both had tears in their eyes when they saw their little girl all grown up and becoming so confident in herself.

There is also another cause for celebration. Eugene and I are expecting our first child.

The first person we told was Echo. I wanted her to be able to celebrate with us as we have been celebrating with her. My sister has brought so much life and joy to Riverview – I am confident that the things she and her friends have done for this place will change it for ever.

Every 6 weeks or so, it seems, we take a weekend or trip outside the confines of Walla Walla—this time it was to Eugene, Oregon, where one of Susanne’s oldest friends lives. We were ready for fun, good conversation, and even the potential of hunting in the woods for chanterelles.

I’ve never mentioned it before, but there’s a part of I-84 that weirds me out a little. A miles-long tree farm. It’s not that I don’t support the tree growth—I definitely do. It’s not that it take 10 minutes, at 70 miles an hour, to get past all of the trees, since I’ve driven by thousand acre woods many times before. It’s the regularity of the planting, the perfect squared distance between each tree, so that they’re plotted out on a grid, should you have the opportunity to see them from above. They look like alien-planted trees. As a person who grew up near several wooded areas, it seems weird to me that to ride my bike through these woods, I’d have to go in a straight line. That’s just . . . somehow harrowing. Driving past, the trees all start to drag on my peripheral vision. Row after row after row after row, they all point at the sky in brown-gray lines that start to resemble actual aliens. And then my head turns, just a little, because now I’m half-sucked into my deciduous voyeurism, and I notice that every so often, the space between rows is marred by one or a few fallen trees. Imperfection in the grid! Whew! And then I can get back to driving.

It’s possible I’ve lost my mind.

Anyway, we made it past the mindtrap of I-84 and continued on into first Portland, turning left to pass the state capitol, and then tucked into Eugene about an hour after dusk. It was difficult, in the dark, to get a sense of Eugene, especially from the highway, but it seemed to be the same splayed out street and residential design of Portland. Heck, it has a Trader Joe’s. Any city with a Trader Joe’s is A-OK in my book.

Susanne’s friend and her husband were happy to see us, but this moment of welcome was quickly supplanted by the greeting from their kitten, Ruby, who cantered over to us and began thoroughly sniffing our feet, ankles, and baggage. I half-wondered if she wasn’t one of the new covert drug-sniffing cats of the National Security Agency. Okay, okay, there are no such drug-sniffing cats. But heck, there could be. So she rubbed herself on us as we sat down to relax, which made me wonder: after 6.5 hours of sitting down driving, why am I sitting down to relax?

It was great to catch up; we discussed dining options and agreed to venture to Ratatouille for dinner. I kept waiting for a cute animated mouse to bring me soup, but it never happened. The all-vegetarian fare was enjoyed by all of us, 3 of whom are ex-vegetarians. I was annoyed at their idea of hummus, however. Just because chick peas are pureed and in a bowl doesn’t mean you can call it hummus—while these were supposed to be takes on the traditional preparation, they were a bit too far gone for me to hold them in the same category as hummus anymore. Or perhaps merging cilantro and garbanzo beans is good in its own right, but when I think hummus, I don’t think, “let’s have some cilantro!”

Dinner was tasty, and I appreciated that anyone would focus on creative vegetable dishes without a ton of accompanying pretense. What I was going to find out shortly, in fact, was that Eugene really doesn’t have much pretension, if it has any at all. We went next to Off the Waffle, a fairly new establishment that was just voted Eugene’s Best New Restaurant. Once again, category names don’t mean much, as Off the Waffle is a restaurant like one’s neighborhood chocolate shop is a restaurant, but I recognized I need to adopt more of the west coast laid back attitude. And I’m certainly not saying they weren’t the most ridiculously tasty waffles I’ve ever eaten. It was a quirky little storefront on the ground floor of a house, with a variety of savory and sweet versions of the Belgian liege waffle, a yeasted batter that they make with pearl sugar so they come out of the press puffy and caramelized. We sat on an old leather sectional sofa and ate out of our 100% recycled paper containers like jackals over a fresh kill. On all sides of us were the brown bags the owners use for the plain waffles—people walk in and out all day, ordering plain waffles to take home or to work, clutching the warm waffles and crinkling the bags in joy. But the bags on the wall are for decoration, each with the scribblings of some customer who was pleased enough to leave a happy, if not idiosynratic, note on the wall. It was like sitting in a room of non sequitors.

At that point, we were stuffed, so we trundled back to Susanne’s friends’ home, where the kitten was extremely pleased to see the return of her four scratching posts. And then there was Saturday.

I live in a city where progressive politics have been a dominant feature of the landscape. Evidence of the Liberal Agenda is on full display, and the consequences have been dire. A burgeoning homeless population has led to abject degradation of the quality of life in this community. Urban sprawl has been dressed up as nodal development, resulting in California-style growth patterns. Inept leadership has stalled the progress it claims to champion, and the citizens suffer for it. New taxes constantly percolate their way up to the surface, inexorably challenging the citizenry to cough up more hard earned dollars. City services invariably chew up more and more revenue, feeding the beast that is OUR CITY GOVERNMENT.

I’m Sorry if i wrong on interpreted something, cause i watched the RAW one,, ^^V

As usual, Kajika’s pheromon was working everywhere~~ even Noel’s man couldn’t dodge it,,

For Li-ren and Noel’s-tachi sake, she cooked her-so-called-stamina-soup, as you know, it had a bad smell and taste,, Even Li-ren didn’t like it,, *lolz (but, actualy, on some episode, Eugene ate those soup, and rate it the same as cooking from 3 stars Rate restaurant! 0.o )

Mahaty And Rumaty on the flashback was so hawt~~

again, Eugene’s pheromone was working for ‘plain’ girl,, (not me, cause i don’t like the type like eugene,, -_-;; )

Finally, Harry revealed his and Kajika true Lineage to Kajika’s Bodyguard, Toranosuke. at the same time, Carl Father too know this truth from Quinza,, he told Carl About this, and Carl really was shock.

what i can saw, from the Hanasakeru Seishounen 30 review, i think that was a serious one, cause Li-ren and Kajika have to run-away from there, because likely, something bad was going on~~

My cousin Hirogen is such a beautiful little girl. She’s very intelligent and extremely creative. She’s always writing little stories and telling us the gossip from around town. Davros and Gloria dote on her, and they’re such loving parents that I almost feel duplicitous for what I’m feeling about Gloria right now.

The other evening I saw her rushing off in a hurry – I was shocked to see what she was wearing. She’d been trying to hide from me and Ezri, but I’d come down for a late night exercise session. I know that outfit. I have to apprehend a lot of criminals in my job, and many of them wear the black and white stripes. It’s almost a badge of honour for them.

I was so angry at her. She’s my aunt and I want to respect her, but this is MY house, and I’m a police officer. I couldn’t believe she would so something so risky as work for the Alto mob, especially in this house with two police officers – and sher has a young daughter, too! What about being a good role model for Hirogen? I started yelling at her and she hushed me.

She told me she wasn’t working for the Alto mob – she hates them as much as I do. She revealed she was one of a small band of independents who are working as thieves to undermine the mob’s influence.

I was astounded. We have caught a couple of independent thieves recently, but they were just small-time crooks with little about them other than a will to cause havoc. Whatever the motivations, theft is theft. How could my own aunt be part of that?

Gloria said she’d always felt compelled to steal since she was a child, but had never done so – then she heard of some small-time thieves who were undermining the Altos by muscling in on their territory, and she saw this as a way to indulge her desires and also help see off the mob scourge. She told me she never kept anything she stole and always left it behind at the places she visited – she was only doing it to satisfy an urge and to put the wind up Lutricia Alto and her cronies.

She begged me not to tell anyone else in the shelter. I know it would kill my mother, devastate Hirogen and Davros and give Ezri real heartache – but what about me? I now have a huge dilemma. I can’t approve of her actions, yet she is really adamant about breaking the stranglehold the Alto mob have, and it’s not as if we’ve been able to stem their tide. What if she’s right and some small-time criminals can do what we as the police have so far failed to do and break the Alto mob’s grip on this town? I just don’t know what to do. She is my aunt, she has a young daughter, I can’t turn her in – but I have a duty to the law. How can I justify harbouring a criminal under my roof?

Knowing Gloria wasn’t really a personal trainer has made me question my brother, Gaius. Is he doing the same thing as Gloria, out night after night, sneaking into people’s shelters, rummaging through their things, causing distress? Gloria claims he isn’t her accomplice but other than that, she argues that it’s up to Gaius to tell me about his activities.

As soon as I learned about Gloria, I took Gaius aside to ask what was going on with him. He just looked straight through me and said he knew what he was doing and he wouldn’t put us in any danger. He won’t tell me anything about his actions, and I just don’t know what to do.

Since Dad died, he has been so sullen, so cut off – it’s as if he’s angry at the world. He misses Dad, we all do, but he’s the youngest and it hit him hardest. All he seems to do is work out and go out to ‘train’. He won’t tell me what he is doing, and I can’t throw my younger brother out for mere suspicion, can I? But something is wrong, and I have a very bad feeling about what he’s getting himself into…

When my mother asked me to take on the running of the household, I never envisaged it would be so difficult. Fortunately, though, it is not all trauma. My partner at work, Eugene, has been a godsend. We get on so well – he has a real love for music like my sister Echo and his dearest desire is one day to be able to do that for a living rather than work in the police. I think he’ll be great – but then, I’m biased.

Working together has brought us incredibly close – we are falling for each other in a big way. I look at him and I can see my future; can see a partnership that I want to endure. I long to marry him – but I am being held back by my fear that he will find out about Gloria and maybe even uncover what Gaius is up to.

My career and my relationship could be in jeopardy because of my family… and yet the last thing I want to do is put my family in danger. I wish I knew what to do next.

HUAAA~~~~ GA RELA! GA RELA! GA RELA!! *Hiks hiks* Relax Noizumi… Relax… Take a deep brea

HUAAA~~~~ GA RELA! GA RELA! GA RELA!! *Hiks hiks*

Relax Noizumi… Relax… Take a deep breath… Inhale… Exhale… Inhale… Exhale… Now PUSH!! Say what?! Mang nya gw lagi ngelahirin apa?!?! Grrr… >___<

OK, i’m relax now…. Sori td gw lose control of myself. Ini gara2 ngeliat tuh pic diatas. Sapa jg yg ga bakal hilang kendali ngeliat tuh pic! Huhuhu… Mesranya yg udah go public… Bikin iri para fans aja…

Pic tsb diatas a/ foto yg diposting ma Se7en di minihompinya tgl 17 November (hari ini) dlm rangka mo ucapin Happy Bday ke chagiya nya, Park Han Byul. Foto tsb ditaro didlm folder yg dikasih nama 7star, singkatan dr namanya dan PHB (note: Byul artinya bintang). Aigoo… As expected from scorpions… Very romantic~ :p

Beserta foto tsb Se7en nulis gini:

A cut from Byulee’s studio~! happy b’day ^^ <3

Hiyaa!! Makin romantis aja… Pake tanda love gt… >3<

Fans yg ngeliat pic tsb disana mengucapkan selamat ultah buat PHB dan di saat yg sama jg bilang iri pd pasangan tsb. Kalo gw bs ngerti bhs Korea, gw jg bakal nulis disana dan bilang iri bgt ngeliat mereka b2! Huhuhu… Tp beneran deh, as a scorpion myself, gw pernah iseng ngecek bintang apa yg paling cocok ma gw. And i found out kalo ternyata yg paling cocok itu a/ sesama scorpion jg. A scorpion’s couple is in fact the most envious couple of all star sign. So as expected, mereka mang cocok dan bikin iri abis org2. Yah moga2 aja mereka bs langgeng hub nya bahkan walopun ga rela gw berharap mereka bs melanjutkan hub mereka ke jenjang pernikahan and bikin little 7star yg lucu2… ^^

Krn Se7en mengucapkan Happy bday ke PHB, kita dr Pop’inAsia jg mo ngucapin:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PARK HAN BYUL-SSI~~

^^

Meanwhile kabar menggembirakan msh dtg dr Se7en. Selain bakal comeback manggung di konser ‘Shine A Light‘ nya G-Dragon tgl 5 & 6 Des nanti, pihak YG Ent jg membocorkan kabar gembira lainnya. Dikabarkan kalo Se7en akhir2 ini pergi ke Amrik setidaknya sehari dlm seminggu buat meeting dgn bbrp major record company disana. Berhub kontraknya dgn record company yg sblmnya (baca: RQM) dah abis, maka Se7en berencana mao menggaet perushaan rekaman lain buat memulai karir nya di Amerika.

Ato film mengikuti jejak Rain?? Apapun itu, kita sbg fans cuma bs bilang: GOOD LUCK SE7EN-ssi~~ ^^

Sekedar u/ merefresh memory, lagu debut Se7en di US “Girls” feat. Lil Kim
