OK, I was a little shocked when I first listened to Cornell’s Scream album, it was like nothing I would have ever expected to hear from him – POP/DANCE -what?

Yes it was true, I sat dazed and confused “had this really happened?” – it had, and  I didn’t like it.

After a few weeks of passive listening while driving around, parts of the album grew on me – now like most Soungarden/Audioslave fans I prefer the harder edge because that’s what I know and have always preferred. We are not pop/fluff fans, we like stronger offerings.  I look forward to a harder album than Cornell as created in the past starting with “Euphoria Morning” in  1999 Cornell has gradually  drifted toward poppy sound only interrupted by the amazing Audioslave days 2001-07. Cornell’s second album “Carry on” in 2006 was also a bit disappointing to me – with only the James Bond theme for Casino Royale as the stand out track. Assuming he can’t go any further into pop, I look forward to a harder tone in his next album. I do like that he is unafraid to do whatever he likes, he’s testing different sounds and styles, but I long for the harder days. The good thing is Cornell has shown he likes to work, he likes making music and lots of it, so it shouldn’t be to long before I have something else to listen to from him, until then it’s back to soundgarden and Audioslave!

Word up.  So with all the attention Trent Reznor’s public snap of Chris Cornell’s album has received I thought it would be only fair to actually hear something from the record so you can judge for yourself.  I’ll share my comments after the clip.  This is the title track from the Timbaland produced Scream, available now:

There you have it.  And you know what?  I don’t hate it.  Is it “embarrassing” as Reznor put it?  Nah.  That strikes me as a little unfair, especially coming from a guy who could make an Irish country & western polka record and still sell fifty thousand copies to his worshipping Trentheads.  Yes, this a new direction for Cornell but one he’s not hiding from.  This isn’t a pop track stuck into a rock album – from what I’ve heard, the whole disc is like this.  The question then is whether or not he’s particularly any good at writing and performing this kind of music.  Honestly, I don’t think there’s anything special going on here with this track, but then I’ve never thought that there was anything special about Gwen Stefani either and look how many records she’s sold.  Cornell found a whole new audience the past couple years with his “Billy Jean” cover and a theme song for Casino Royale.  In spite of Reznor’s criticisms, I think Cornell can actually succeed at this new venture.  You have to keep in mind that there are millions of people probably hearing this song on the radio who have no idea what the hell a Soundgarden is.  Their loss could be Cornell’s gain.  Soundgarden aside though (and to a much lesser extent I suppose I should say Audioslave aside, too) I personally preferred Cornell’s solo work when it sounded like this:

That’s “Preaching the End of the World” off of Cornell’s first solo album 1999’s Euphoria Morning.  I’ve been listening to that song for years, but never bought the album.  Anybody know if it’s any good?  Surely I can find it used somewhere, hmm.  (Note to self: buy this)  Also, if anyone should be as bold as to actually buy Scream or find a good unbiased review of it pass that along as well.  Moving on, I thumbed through this great book over the weekend that’s more or less a glossy photo journal of glam Metal, titled American Hair Metal. It’s been out a couple years but this was the first time I’ve actually run across a physical copy and I’m pretty sure I’m going to need to own it at some point.  For starters, the cover is pink and on page one is a photo of a lone Aqua Net hairpspray can.  Awesome.   It looked as if all the usual suspects where in the book, but surprisingly the cover belongs to the band Nitro.  You may not remember the name, but I bet you might remember guitarist Michel Angelo Batio and his completely ridiculous quad-guitar.  Here’s their video for the song “Freight Train” from the 1989 album O.F.R. (which stands for???).  It’s a real piece of work:

Essential listening? Probably not.  Essential reading?  You bet.  More tomorrow…

Logo abaixo vai o link pra download do CD. Pra ser sincero com vc, só conheço essa música do vídeo, mas to ouvindo aqui esse CD pela primeira vez. Depois te falo o q eu achei. O cara lançou outro CD agora em 2007, Carry On.
