I am bursting with topics to write on now. I mean i had started this blogathon as an idea to condition me to writing more regularly. Its just 3 days since i have been at it continuously, so i cant really boast much. Still have a long way to go. I had read in Robin Sharmas book, “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrarri”, that for any habit to completely become your nature you have to go at it for a minimum of 21 days continuously. I dont know how he arrived at the number but, its still a great piece of statistical information for me. I like to strech my limits and challenge myself. My Taurean nature helps here in the sense that i am stubborn and if i really want to do something then i make my mind determined to do the task at hand if its do-able. Of the many ideas that zoomed past my mind today to write for the blogathon, i will obviously have to select only one idea.

Germany didnt make it yesterday. It was saddening to see Micheal Ballack after Spain clinched the Euo 2008 Championship. Well all points to them, they were clearly above Germany in terms of the game strategy. Germans hardly attacked in the 2nd half. Torres was good, real good with his solo goal in the match.

Left has come up with another drama. They say that they will withdraw support if the Congress goes ahead with the Indo – US Nuclear deal. Its really silly and i dont really understand why such as educated man as Prakash Karat, is behaving so childishly. The only reason the Left is anti Deal is because it involves the US. I dont really get Karats ideology so to say. Its all bullshit according to me, the reasons given by the Left and Karat in particular why it is against the Deal. I mean with a party like Left as your coalition, i dont think the Govt at the centre needs BJP in the opposition.

The Congress on the other hand is properly cornered man. I really pity the position Dr. Manmohan Singh has put himself into. On the one hand there are petty politics going on within his party. The time frame for the finalization of the Indo-US Nuclear deal is ticking fast. India goes to the IAEA by August, till then there has to be a definite decision taken, else Dr. Manmohan Singh will be remembered as the man who lost India this deal just because he wanted to save his Govt. for a period of three more months. Very rude i know, but that is how atleast i will remember him. Dr. Manmohan Singh is a talented fellow and the economic condition of the country today is all thanks to his liberating policy in the 1991 Budget. Also, the rising inflation and the Govt’s feeble attempt to contain it, is hammering the nails in the coffin of the present Govt. Rising prices have really angered the nation, and if there are early elections chances of Congress making it with a majority are very very slim. On second thoughts i dont really think the Congress have any chance, early election or no early election, to come into power next time, till it has some solid coalition. But i really feel that Singh should go ahead and finalise the Nuclear Deal once and for all. He will be revered for that for generations to come. At $143 per barrel of crude oil price, India cant really depend on oil anymore to sustain its voracious growth. We HAVE to start using Nuclear Power for civilian purposes. Its high time the Left and other anti- Deal idiots just shut the F up!

Take Care

Ciao

Congratulations to Spain and their coach, Luis Aragonés for being crowned the Euro 2008 champions after defeating Germany 1-0 at the Ernst Happel stadium, Vienna.

Spain was a worthy and true champion as their crisp passing, wonderful technique and defensive discipline left Germany flailing.

There are alot of quality players in the present team and they played well and lady luck smiled on them this time.

Their football style was a delight to watch. They were under achievers in so many major tournaments and were unlucky most of the time.

The win send thousands of Spaniards to rapturous and boisterous partying and dancing in central Madrid. The capital was awashed with a sea of people who adorned the red and gold national colours of Spain.

It has been 44 years and the victory was really sweet for all the Spanish people. The flamboyant and terrific striker for Spain ,Fernando Torres who plays for Liverpool, England , scored the decisive and high class and quality finish goal on the 33th minute ,sending the Spanish to rapturous delights and exhilaration’s.

He was like the matador against the German bull . With one swift, clinical and calculated shot ,he send the ball into the back of the German goal and he broke the hearts of the millions of German fans Ole! Ole! Ole!

Spain midfielder Xavi has been named the best player at Euro 2008 by Uefa’s technical panel.

Three players were named the best players for Spain , Casillas, Torres and Fabregas .The other players too deserved the credits and played their hearts out.

The Germans with their methodical hard running and efficient team was no match for the Spanish class.

The finale to Euro 2008 produced a fitting triumph for “beautiful football” and the best team in the tournament prevailed.

Now that the finale has come to a close and Spain has been declared the champions, many of those crazy and hardcore football fans are having a hangover with the lack of sleep ,eye problems ,headaches , heartaches and pocketaches..LOL!

Felicitaciones a la gente de España. ¡Ustedes son los campeónes!

Spain defeated Germany for their first Euro Cup in 44 years in front of a packed crowd in Vienna, Austria. Their 1 and only goal took place at the 33rd minute of the match by Fernando Torres. Spain took advantage of their possessions by shooting on goal 8 times, but having the actual possession for less than 50%. There is a sense in which this win by Spain has awoken a hibernating bear out of its slumber.

As Spain hadn’t won a Euro Cup in 44 years, they started to build a reputation as a team that couldn’t finish the job, or a team that chokes in the spotlight. It kindof reminds me of the Chicago Cubs, except their drought is more than twice the length of what Spain’s was until today.

For football fans worldwide, I’m sure there is disappointment that the games are over, but no fear, its only another 2 years until the World Cup begins again, and this time It’ll be in South Africa . VIVA ESPANA!!

Congratulaciones a Espana por su victoria en la Copa.

They beat Germany 1-0. While it wasn’t the most captivating game to watch, it was near total dominance by the Spaniards (over my Germans). They were amazingly fast and pin point precision passing. Total team brilliance.

Hats off and congrats on your first win in 44 years in the European Cup. Goat no mas.

I know it’s very difficult to win a great team as Germany is… They won lots of cups and this time it’s possible that they win it too… but I’ve got too much faith and I believe Spain can win. I’m not saying that it’s gonna be easy, of course I’m not, but it’s possible if we play hard, and we believe Spain will win…

Countdown: 3 hours 13 minutes left.

In the United States, a sports fan is given the option of following professional football, baseball, basketball, hockey, or soccer (among other sports). At any given time of year, you can sit down, turn on the TV, and watch a Major League Baseball, NCAA Football, and NFL Football game at the same time. Each carries its own unique customs and crowds, and some fans even leave the a baseball game to catch the Sunday Night Football game at the next door football stadium.

Fly 5,000 miles over the Atlantic Ocean, and you’ll find yourself in the middle of Football mania. In my travels through Romania I’ve heard World Cup fans banging pots and pans at 3am. I’ve been in the streets of Oxford, England when Italy defeated France in the 2006 World Cup, to hear fans shout “Italia! Italia!” Visit any pub or bar in a major European city and there is bound to be some football faithfuls watching the local Premier league game on the telly. And tonight, we will see two of the most dominant teams in Europe face in the Euro Cup Finals in Vienna, Austria.

At stake for Spain is a 44 year drought since when they last wont the Euro Cup in 1964. It happened to be in Madrid Spain. At stake for the Germans is only a 12 year drought, in which they won in 1996. As American fans, we may not be used to this type of excitement. Although you can watch an entire football match for 90 minutes and not see a goal, I’ve found that the matches can be cliffhangers. But I would like to suggest the importance of watching a diverse group of sports. If you are India, try watching cricket. It can be a confusing game, but it is soaked in a long history of tradition and competition. In New Zealand, try watching Rugby. It is closest to American Football, with an element of Soccer as well. Watching 90 minutes of a Euro Cup final game might get you hooked on something that has grown in popularity in the US.

If you decide you have enough time to watch part of the Euro Cup Finals, turn to ABC at 2:30pm EST. I’m putting my confidence in Spain. After 44 years, they deserve a Euro Cup Championship.

It is a little hard for me to pass on watching soccer games especially when it comes to Euro Cup and World Cup. This week and past I have been watching almost every game during lunch time at a pizza parlor nearby. Even worst, I skipped out on my bike rides. Well my excuse was that the air quality isn’t good due to summer fires around the Bay here. I am not any where near being a hardcore soccer fan like my brothers who would stay up late or wake up early in the morning during tournaments like this. I watch soccer once every two years during the final stretch, and it lasts about 2 weeks. Well, more than American mainstream sports, which I don’t have much interest in. Over the last 2 weeks I came to realize that I can definitely gain weight by watching more sport. Gaining about 5 more pounds has been my number desire for the past 7 plus years – even friends and family think so too. During regular time games I chowed down 2 slices of pizza, 3 sodas and a small bowl of salad. If the games somehow went overtime or into penalty kicks, I got a scoop of ice cream and more more sodas. My teeth are now aching from the over dosage of CO2. On the upside, I have made a lot of pseudo friends and same faces showed up the next day to watch the games with me.

With one game left to go on Sunday, I’ll weight in to see how many pound I have gained and how many teeth are rotten. Usually any sport fan would have their favorite team except for me. Personally I would pick Germany over Spain because I have friends and family live in Germany. I like their beers. Statistically speaking, I think Spain have a better chance of winning. They have not lost a single game in this tournament. They slaughtered the Russians during semifinal match with 3-0 to go into the final. The Germans, on the other hand, have lost once to the Croatians and were on the verge of losing to the Turks during semifinal but they came back at the very last minute. Historically, Germans had won 3 Euro Cups in 1972, 1980 and 1996 while Spain got only one in 1964. To sum everything up, it will be a great game to watch!

I was saying that Spain was going to score 3!!!And Russia 0… In the end, that was the score!!!!^^ I got so happy, SO HAPPY!

However, I didn´t feel very good when I saw Russian being so sad… :/ well…

World Cup ‘06 was an epiphany for Brother Reynell. After years of looking upon soccer as a bunch of guys kicking a ball around, Reynell came to realize the subtle intricacies of futbol. Join him as he continues his journey into the light of the game on the pitch.

If you’ve been watching the European 2008 Championship, you have to be pinching yourself. With all the games widely available to an American audience on ESPN and ABC, the action could not be more suited for action starved American sports fans. After Germany’s drubbing of Portugal in the first game 3-1, we’ve had nothing but overtime games, two of which went to a shoot out. Plus, many of the games have been dramatic comebacks (see any Turkey game). ESPN ran a statistic that said of the sixty-eight goals scored thus far, eighteen of those have come after the 85th minute. The semifinal matches are as follows:

Wednesday June 25: Germany vs. Turkey
Thursday June 26: Russia vs. Spain
Sunday June 29: Championship game in Vienna, Austria

There are plenty of injuries and suspensions that may affect one or both of these games. Keep up with who’s in and who’s out here. For now, let’s hand out some awards from the quarterfinal round:

Overachievers: The Euro 2008 Youth Movement

So many younger players are making names for themselves, and the players who were thought to dominate seem to be remiss. Spain’s Fernando Torres has taken a back seat to David Villa, Michael Ballack does not seem to be producing as expected (one goal off of a free kick), and the self-proclaimed world’s best, Cristiano Ronaldo, failed to advance his very talented team to the semifinals. Nevertheless, this has been a great championship because there are plenty of new players on this novice’s list to watch when league play starts back in August. Should make for a good article.

Underachievers: Group Winners

Croatia, Portugal, and Netherlands all won their respective groups, but lost their quarterfinal matches. Almost as quickly as the Dutch caught fire, they fizzled out against a young Russian team that looked more like the Oranje with crisp passes and a relentless attack on goal. It’s hard to blame Portugal because they did lose to Germany, a favorite to win and a world power when it comes to soccer. Cristiano Ronaldo will have to wait two more years to answer the international critics in the 2010 World Cup. One has to wonder what the deal is with the Portuguese – all that talent and nothing to show. Sad to see the Clipboard’s adopted team, Croatia, lose a stunner to Turkey.

Player of the Week: Andrei Arshavin, Russia

After serving a two game suspension at the start of the tournament, has come on strong for the Russians by scoring the game winner against Sweden and also scoring against Netherlands in the quarterfinals. His play has seemed to further validate his greatness achieved with his club, Zenit St. Petersburg, which won its first European trophy this past year by defeating Rangers Glasgow in the UEFA Cup Final. If this is in fact a youth movement of sorts, then the twenty-seven year old Arshavin is the vanguard. I hope he leaves Zenit and signs with a bigger club over the summer so we can watch him more closely. More on Arshavin’s play here.

Goal of the Week: Semih Şentürk Turkey versus Croatia

As a substitute, Semih scored in stoppage time at the end of the second overtime. He was able to squeeze it through two defenders and go near post. Not much space at all, as you can see here. The question for Turkey now is can Semih do it for ninety minutes; he will be starting in place of the injured Turkey striker Nihat Kahveci.

Save of the Week: Rüştü Reçber penalty kick save to assure Turkey’s win versus Croatia

Maybe not the best save of these quarterfinals, but certainly a memorable onefor Turkish fans. We do need to consider this: Recber has appeared in more games (117) for Turkey than any other player and he wasn’t even supposed to play in this European Championship. The starting goalkeeper, Volkan Demril, is currently serving a two game suspension after being red carded against Czech Republic.

Game of the Week: Spain versus Italy 0-0 regulation and extra time, Spain wins 4-2 on penalties

Once again Euro saved the best for last this week. This game had all the action without the goals. There were plenty of shots (a total of nine on target, Spain alone had fifteen sail wide) and some great defending, especially by Italy. Both goalkeepers made saves late in the game to push for extra time. Iker Casillas came out of the shootout as the hero and seems to be in top form going into the semifinal match against Russia.

From my point of view, the Euro Cup is not that big in the US. Forgive me for those of you who do care, but its true. You do not see many Americans rallying over the tournament. Soccer does not get as much coverage as other sports, unless the US is involved. It just isn’t an American sport.

But let me tell you, outside of the US countries and people are roaring with excitement and angst. Speaking from an Italian point of view, my family has been living, eating and breathing the Euro Cup. Every minute of every day, I hear the most recent news of the ongoings behind the curtains of America’s indifference involving the Euro Cup.

Well, some of you may know or some of you don’t, but it is my deepest regret that I must inform you that Italy was kicked out of the race towards the Euro Cup today by Spain, due to PENALTY KICKS (they are the WORSE!).

I cannot explain to you how depressed and hurt my family is feeling tonight. After watching Spain kick their final penalty kick, the room went silent. It was as if someone died. But what silenced them the most was the image of Spain running and jumping in celebration, while Italy held their heads in their hands.

The game ended in an 0-0 count, leaving the penalty kicks to determine the game. After Spain and Italy had their chances at the goal post, Spain left the scoreboard at 4-2 in penalty kicks.

According to my father, he felt that “Italy was not playing their best today.”

We all know that Italy won the World Cup 2006 (pulling in four stars baby :D) and the anticipation of another win was on every Italian’s mind. Once you’ve had the taste of victory, nothing else satisfies.

So to see Italy walk off as the losing team was too much to handle. Once the game was determined and Spain was celebrating, my family turned off the TV, a sight too sore for eyes. With their heavy hearts, and their minds unable to grasp this loss, they found comfort in a cup of Espresso. This loss still hangs around their necks, like an albatross. Italy and their fans will always be reminded of their loss to Spain in the Euro Cup 2008.

With our heads hung low, we all to have to remember that we cannot win them all. Yet, with Italy being World Cup Champions…you want them to win it all. But unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen. Italy still has the World Cup to hold onto, so we have bragging rights baby. Euro Cup is a whole different story.

The image of Fabio Cannavaro holding the World Cup is still fresh in my mind, and never in a time had I been prouder to call myself Italian. Its silly yes, that a victory in sports reminds you of how much you love your team, and in this case your people, your heritage.

So no matter what, we have four winning crowns and NO ONE can strip us of our stars.

I’m a guy who enjoys the game of baseball. Not as much as basketball or football, but I would rather watch (or listen to) a baseball game during a summer afternoon or evening than any other sport.

But with 162 games, the regular season is just to long to follow closely from start to finish. From the end of the NBA finals in June to the start of College and Pro Football the first of September (only 67 days away!!) I need other sports and sporting events to keep my sport juices flowing.

Living in Las Vegas, I have the opportunity to watch the NBA summer league as well as the best high school basketball players play at the huge AAU tournaments sponsored by Nike and Adidas. I especially enjoy having a chance to watch the AAU tournaments and see some of the future stars of college and the NBA (as well as scouting the next Georgetown Hoya). Had a chance to see Greg Oden, Mike Connelly Jr., Kevin Love, Eric Gordon, Derek Rose, Brandon Jennings (when he was a freshman), O.J Mayo and Bill Walker play in the high school gyms all over Vegas and it has been great.

As far as professional sports, every year I look forward watching Wimbledon and any UFC or boxing event. Add in the all star game as well as other things on the periphery, and I’m straight for the summer.

This summer I found a sport that captured my attention and I found out I’m really enjoying watching the sport. This sport features great athletes of extraordinary skill, tremendous heart and passion, great flair and beautiful scenery. Yes, believe it or not, I’m very much enjoying the EURO CUP!!

The passion that these countries have for their teams is incredible!!! These people live and die with each and every move they make!! I’ve never seen anything like this in the US!! Whatever country wins this tournament, it’ll be like a national holiday!! Image the joy and jubilation if the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl and times that by a THOUSAND!!! Image the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series and multiple that by a MILLION!!! That’s what you’re going to get when one of these countries win this Euro Cup.

I must admit I have never been a soccer fan. In fact my slogan of “Soccers’ for suckers” go back as far as my sophomore year in high school (yea, that long ago!!). I have always dismissed the sport and completely ignored anything having to do with the game.

But starting off watching the 2006 World Cup and learning more about Ronaldinho and Michael Ballack, Zinedine Zidane and my favorite player Thierry Henry. And that World Cup started the turn in my attitudes and thoughts about the game.

I am definitely rooting for the Turkey national team. After watching their two games against the Czech Republic and Croatia I am a huge fan. That team actually had me watching the hold game and I was into it!! I’ve never done that before when it came to soccer!! Without question, the best soccer game I’ve ever saw. Yes, that’s how much of a neophyte I am when it comes to this.

Now I will say this is the perfect time for me to enjoy this sport and learn more about it. I realize why the majority of the world loves this game. And while this game they call “football” will never come close to replacing American football, basketball, baseball, tennis and MMA in my love of sports. I have come to truly come to highly respect these incredible athletes and the skill they have.

And speaking of the beautiful game. I defy anyone of you reading this post to find me another sporting event where you can find women who are more beautiful than the females who are in the stands!!! Beautiful women from all of these European countries just looking as fine as they can be!! And when the World Cup comes back around…LORD HAVE MERCY!!! It don’t get any better.

Sat 21st, June 2008

Basel, Switzerland (Sports Network) – Andrey Arshavin and Dmitri Torbinski scored goals in extra time to hand Russia a surprising 3-1 win over the Netherlands on Saturday in a Euro 2008 quarterfinal.

Russia took a 1-0 lead into the final five minutes of regulation on Roman Pavluchenko’s 56th-minute strike, but a Ruud van Nistelrooy header in the 86th minute leveled the match for the Dutch and forced extra time.

Despite conceding a late equalizer, Russia dominated the extra 30 minutes and went ahead in the 112th minute when Arshavin’s cross was tapped in by Torbinski, while Arshavin added an insurance tally five minutes later to put the game away.

The Dutch entered the match as the most impressive side in the competition after winning all three of its group stage matches by a combined 9-1 score, but they were unable to deal with the talented duo of Arshavin and Pavluchenko, and Russia will now meet either Italy or Spain in the semifinals on Thursday.

The Russians started brightly with two good chances in the opening eight minutes of the match. Yuri Zhirkov forced a diving save from Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar on a free kick from the right flank, and Pavlyuchenko got loose for a free header 10 yards from goal, but he nodded the ball over the crossbar.

The high-flying Dutch attack was held in check early in the contest as Russia did a good job of possessing the ball and keeping it away from them.

A good opportunity presented itself in the 30th minute when Rafael van der Vaart’s free kick from the right wing skipped to the front of goal, needing just a slight touch to go in. Van Nistelrooy shook free from his defender but the ball eluded his foot and rolled over the end line.

Russia’s vaunted counter attack tested Van der Sar again minutes later when Arshavin found space on the left wing and carried the ball into the area. He took on Dutch defender Andre Ooijer and then curled a shot towards the far post, but Van der Sar dove and got his fingertips to the ball, deflecting it past the post.

Russia’s Denis Kolodin then decided to fire a shot from 35 yards that forced Van der Sar to tip the ball over the net, keeping the Dutch pinned back on their heels.

Kolodin nearly gave away a goal before halftime when his errant pass landed at the feet of Van der Vaart, but goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was able to parry the Dutch midfielder’s effort from the top of the box.

The two team’s entered halftime without a goal, but Russia had to be the more confident team after outplaying the Dutch for much of the first half.

The opener finally came for the Russian’s in the 56th minute, with Arshavin starting the move by finding Sergei Semak on the left wing. Semak then crossed to the front of goal for Pavlyuchenko, and he volleyed it into the bottom corner from eight yards to give Russia a deserved 1-0 lead.

That advantage nearly swelled to two goals when Pavlyuchenko got into the box on the right and ripped a shot from a tight angle, but Van der Sar got a hand to it.

A great chance was then squandered by Robin van Persie in the 71st minute when Van Nistelrooy was pulled down just outside the box. The Arsenal striker was given a free kick just 20 yards from goal, but he blasted his shot well over the net.

Russia began to sit back and look for counter-attack chances, which allowed the Netherlands to get men forward in search of an equalizer.

Wesley Sneijder had a good look at goal from 25 yards but whistled his shot past the upper left corner, however the breakthrough arrived in the final minutes to level the match.

Sneijder lofted a free kick from the left wing towards the far post, and Van Nistelrooy beat his man to the ball and nodded it home from close range to force extra time.

Pavlyuchenko drilled the crossbar in the 97th minute after beating a Dutch defender on the left wing, and Arshavin created an opening in the 100th minute for Torbinski, whose lunging effort was stopped by Van der Sar.

Russia continued to ask questions of the Dutch defense, and Arshavin once again carved out a chance that put Russia in front.

He took on a defender on the left flank and got to the end line before lofting a cross over the head of Van der Sar to the back post. Torbinski ran past a Dutch defender and got enough of the ball to touch it over the goal line, putting Russia ahead with eight minutes to play.

The result was then put away with three minutes left when Arshavin beat Van der Sar between the legs from close range.

If you haven’t been watching the Euro Cup (you should be). I was this morning from the Vancouv

If you haven’t been watching the Euro Cup (you should be). I was this morning from the Vancouver Police Department while having my fingerprints taken. Uh, I wasn’t being arrested, I have to have it done to apply for my permanent residency (the Canadian equivalent of a green card). The Police station helpfully had the game on on nice sized TV screens in the lobby.

Well, anyway, the Turks are becoming the miracle comeback team. In the previous match against the favored Czechs they were down 2-0 while 15 minutes to go and amazingly scored three goals to win it. There was a really hot Czech woman in front of me in line (at the station also getting fingerprints for her residency application) who was lamenting that loss and cursing the Turks.

Today against the Croatians, (the quarterfinals) both teams end regulation scoreless. Croatians score within the first minute of overtime, Turkey looks dead (again) then comes back from the abyss, ties it up and wins in the shootout. Wow. Recap here. The Croatians missed 3/4 in the shootout. Yikes.

This video captures it well.

Next up though in the semis they’ve got my Germans. Auf Wiedersehen Turkey.
