I never knew what love – true love – was until yesterday.

Flying is brutal. Especially when you hop aboard your flight, and it’s 5:45, then eight hours and 21 Jump Street later it’s 9:55 AM in Madrid. My neck hurt a lot. I was really tired. And probably extremely unfriendly (sorry, y’all.) I also probably cried because I missed my friends and family already.

As soon as my feet hit the ground at the Madrid airport, it felt like home. There were so many different languages buzzing about me, it was chaos, it was beautiful. The airport is so nice. I didn’t take pictures because I felt it was too touristy – but it’s one of the nicest airports in the world.

Then, the bus. Traveling to Segovia, we finally saw the Spanish landscape. So beautiful. Dry, but beautiful. There are all these sepia-colored houses and neighborhoods lining the streets. They played Michael Jackson and Prince on the bus. Some of the people in the program were arguing over who was the real king of pop… My vote goes to MJ, even though I like Prince more.

We got into Segovia and it was like a wonderland with a Burger King. We got off the bus right in front of the aqueduct – which I have not captured on film yet (I’ll be here for 29 more days…) – and met our host families. I met my roommate for the first time and she was very shy, but very nice. Our host dad (as opposed to our senora) came to pick us up and was very friendly! (By the way, the Spanish do kiss on both cheeks when they greet each other. Even though Ms. Burgess told me they did it a million times, I still thought it was a myth.) His name is Sandro. He drove us to his apartment where he, his wife, Myriam, and two precious daughters viven (that’s Spanish for live.)

He talked so quickly that I couldn’t hardly understand him, even with six years of Spanish under my belt. I did, however, understand him when he said partido de futbol.

PARTIDO DE FUTBOL?! WHAT!! YOU MEAN THE EURO CUP FINAL THAT IS GOING ON TONIGHT WHERE MY FAVORITE TEAM OF ANY SPORT IN THE WORLD IS PLAYING?!!

and I tried to communicate with him about it, and hinted at watching it. We talked about our favorite players and he accused me of being a Torres fan (while I do love me some Nando, Casillas, Ramos, and my beloved Xabi have my heart.), a statement at which I laughed.

My roommate and I unpacked and spent time with our family for a while. They call me Bi (pronounced bee, like the letter), because it’s easier than Bailey. We went out for tapas and Coca-Cola, talked a while, and laughed a lot. I love my host family. They are super nice, understanding about how off-par my Spanish is, and are so comical.

By the way, we had three tapas, which are like little appetizers. One was some kind of sea creature on top of salad on top of bread – I didn’t like it. Then we had ham on honeydew melon, which Sandro, mi papa de casa, made me eat whole. I didn’t really like it, either, mostly cause I got choked on the ham.

After spending time with them, I realized that my Spanish wasn’t that bad. It’s gotten worse now because I think too hard about it, but even they complemented me on it (so my life is obvs complete. except not.)

Anyway, love. We toured Segovia afterwards, and it is the most enchanting place that I have ever been. It is tiring and horrible to walk around here, so hilly and cobblestoney, but so quaint and perfect with beautiful buildings and stores and so, so many bars. (I went to one and got lemonade – saving the Sangria for later.) I was already in love with the city, but last night cemented it.

I decided to watch the game in the plaza. I missed the first 15 minutes because we got lost, but what I did catch was amazing. The plaza was full – I mean AT CAPACITY – of people, almost all in roja y amarillo // red and yellow, the colors of Spain. My boys played phenomenally. When they scored goals, the entire city erupted in cheers and threw water and beer on each other. At the third goal, I was screaming of happiness because I knew we’d win – but at the fourth goal, I nearly pissed myself. It was a big game to the Spaniards: if they won it, they would be the only team in history to win three consecutive cup titles (euro 2008, w.c. 2010, euro 2012)… and they did. When Mata (I think) got the fourth goal with assistance from Nando, I screamed, jumped up and down, pretended I knew the songs of celebration they were singing… It was so beautiful. I know I won’t be able to describe how much I loved it. My roommate and I watched as everyone cried, hugged, jumped, sang songs, screamed, whistled, gave off fireworks, beat drums, threw things into the air, and were just plain happy. The celebrations lasted all night.

As we were walking home, cars drove by and honked at us because I was wearing a Spain flag like a cape. I would scream VIVA ESPANA!! and the people would honk, and honk, and scream it back. CAMPEONES! VIVA LA ROJA! so many cheers throughout the night. It was the most epic moment to be a part of. Now I’m part of Spanish history… I experienced their third cup title in Spain.

They love their football here. We’ve been watching stuff about it on TV since yesterday, and my host family makes fun of me for getting giddy and excited when I see my boys. Shucks. Can’t help it.

I showered last night and went to bed thinking about how happy I was to experience everything I had that day. Outside, cars were still honking and people were still yelping. I was so thankful for everything. At La Fuente, firetrucks came and sprayed everyone down for fun.

Today was tiring. Classes were long, I tipped a waiter more than 100% for a water because he was so nice, and I took a 2 hour nap… That’s about it. We’re going to Toledo tomorrow, and hopefully I’ll be able to be a bit more concise with my storytelling. Siempre que viva Espana! I love it here so far, although I am homesick.

B

Welp, the aforementioned hot weather was short-lived; Oxford is officially back to cold and rainy. But that didn’t stop us from having “Very High Tea” at the Old Parsonage Hotel yesterday afternoon After mass at a beautiful church, St. Aloysius,…

…we headed for the Old Parsonage Hotel. It’s a tiny, charming old hotel with a fantastic ambiance. It was too cold to sit outdoors, so we headed inside–fireplace blaring and the delightful sound of clinking silverware around us–to have tea. Each of us ordered a different kind of tea with the hotel’s “Very High Tea” service. The meal came with a pot of tea, several scones and delicious clotted cream and jam, an assortment of tea sandwiches, and a tantalizing selection of mini desserts. We were in heaven.

We arrived at tea at approximately 3:30, but didn’t leave until after 5:30. we had wonderful conversation, and felt like what we called “a bunch of sophisticated old ladies”; We had saved all of our good stories and nuggets for tea, just like we imagined a bunch of ladies would for weekly get-togethers with friends. We then headed to the University Parks to ramble on some muddy paths…still donning our ladylike tea attire.

We then hurried back to Wycliffe to catch the final game of the Euro Cup. The common area was filled with people, so we decided to watch the game on a laptop in one of the buildings we had access to. It was great–we all wore comfy clothing and sat on a couch and pillows/beanbag chairs. The isolated area had the benefit of being away from the Spain fans in the common room, and I was able to suffer my humiliation at Italy’s loss in relative friendly company

We ended the night with a giant YouTube video-watching/kitchen-cleaning party. If you haven’t seen this already (or even if you have) you MUST watch this video. The premise is that a bunch of children are told a story that happened to someone in their family, and the children recount it in their own way. Their family members then act out the story by splicing together what the children have recited.

Well, that was Sunday. Sunday was relaxing, but today was mostly hard work. I had a great time with God this morning, then spent a few hours reading and planning a paper for one of my classes. I then took a short walk to a local bookstore and snagged this awesome vintage copy of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for one of my classes! I was sooooo excited. If you’ve read any of my earlier posts, or just know anything about me, you can guess how elated I was to find not only the book I needed, but a pretty one. I just loooove books. See my earlier post, “‘D’ is for Decorated Books”, for tips on using your favorite books as decor items. http://letrendynerd.wordpress.com/2012/01/04/d-is-for-decorated-books/

I’m not sure I should admit this, but finding that book was probably the highlight of my day today. I also went to Cath Kidston, a cool British store which also has a store in NYC. It has tons of fun, girly, floral clothing and accessories. Besides that, the day was pretty routine…but actually something minorly “exciting” did happen…a couple of hours ago I realized I was having an allergic reaction to something, so I’m on Benadryl right now and pretty drowsy. I’ll attempt to read some more Dracula and then pass out. Night, all!

On Sunday afternoon, the Spanish national team broke records and cemented itself in history when it

On Sunday afternoon, the Spanish national team broke records and cemented itself in history when it beat Italy 4-0 in the 2012 Euro Cup final in Kiev, Ukraine. Spain became the first team to ever win back-to-back-to-back major tournament titles, and the first team to win back-to-back European Championships.

David Silva scored the game winning goal off a cross from Cesc Fábregas in the 14th minute. Andrés Iniesta sent a through ball to Fabregas, who earned the start after being left out of the lineup for the semifinal. Fabregas dribbled toward the touch line and crossed the ball to Silva, one of the smallest men on the field, who headed the ball into the back of the net. The Italian goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon committed to a near post shot, and when Fabregas crossed the ball instead of taking the shot, it left an empty net for Silva.

Spain’s next goal came in the 41st minute when Xavi sent another beautiful through ball to the left back Jordi Alba who slipped the ball past Buffon. This was Jordi Alba’s first goal for Spain, and it happened on one of the biggest soccer stages. Spain went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Italy’s luck turned from bad to worse. In the 57th minute Italy made its third and final substitute, Thiago Motta for Riccardo Montolivo. But less than 10 minutes later Thiago Motta hurt his hamstring, and Italy was forced to play nearly 30 minutes with 10 men. The comeback, which was already going to be difficult, turned nearly impossible.

In the 84th minute Fernando Torres, who came on in place of Fabregas, received another splendid through ball from the assist man Xavi and scored. This marked Torres third goal of the tournament. Moments later, Juan Mata, who was seeing his first minutes in the tournament, scored off an assist from Torres. Torres’ assist tied him with German Mario Gomez for the Golden Boot, but because Torres played fewer minutes during the tournament (a tiebreaker), he won the Golden Boot.

Italy held Spain to its lowest time of possession in the entire tournament: 52 percent–a surprising number considering Italy’s bad luck in the second half. When Italy went down to 10 men, it was almost too painful to watch. Spain passed the ball around the tired Italian side that barely held possession of the ball and, when it did get possession, almost immediately gave it away. Italy did have a couple chances to score, but Iker Casillas continued to perform at a high level in goal. Spain went 512 minutes without conceding a goal, the longest streak in Euro Cup history. Spain also only conceded one goal in the entire tournament, the fewest allowed since the Euro Cup adopted the group stage in 1980. The 4-0 victory is the largest margin of victory in a Euro Cup final, although its hard to say if Spain would have won by four goals if Italy had stayed healthy for the entire game.

The back-to-back-to-back major championship titles (2008 Euros, 2010 World Cup, 2012 Euros) and back-to-back Euro Championships makes Spain arguably one of the greatest teams in soccer history. And with Spain’s core starters only being in their late 20s and early 30s, its more than likely that we’ll see this same squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Only this team will be slightly stronger with the return of injured David Villa, and I’d hate to see what kind of damage that team can do.

By Admin I : Here we go again digging in some advertising campaigns released in the last few days after an extensive Design Week coverage and review. So the buzz made by Euro Cup is finally over as well as all the cheesiness invested in advertising to keep up with this event. After Lebanese Brew beating the hell out of all Almaza campaigns and a flow of other ‘inaperçus‘ commercials, one managed to strike an appearance.

Zaatar w Zeit (aka the failing rebranding job) released their Euro Cup campaign around early June with what they thought was a breakthrough.

In our part of the world, we show our support for our leaders, by carrying them on our shoulders. Like wise, Zaatar W Zeit supports each country for the Euro cup, by having the actual Zaatar W Zeit staff carrying the respective country leaders on their shoulders. Are you serious?!

Guys, using political leaders for a pop oriented ad can be a quite fun idea, but honestly, it looks somehow forced: it’s like some creative wanted to stick a political leader onto a campaign to make a buzzing impact and go virally, a desperate call that managed to reach adsoftheworld.com but still appears as far fetched and adds nothing to the brand.. Not even influences behavior. It’s clear that the ad was more of a call for attention than a working campaign.

Why not?!

Well, if you had a minimum reach for these two years most influential campaigns, you can easily disregard the impact that Zaatar w Zeit failed to achieve after the award winning “Unhate“,”The return of Ben Ali” and the hit “Reporters Without Borders” campaign that evolved around controversial censorship.

The fun can easily turn out as cheesy, and the daring turns out dull!

So to wrap it up, over-using political figures in advertising especially for random purposes makes blunt failures especially that the ones mentioned above invaded the web even reaching my grandma, unless she’s the target audience of this badly designed brand (yes, i can repeat it endlessly).

Cheers to desperate randomness!

So, instead of going to Venice I caved in and decided that I needed to go to Rome. And I did! I went

So, instead of going to Venice I caved in and decided that I needed to go to Rome. And I did! I went for three and a half days which gave me plenty of chances to explore the city. I left on Thursday afternoon and ended up getting there on Thursday night. I tried to do this thing called Couchsurfing. It is an online community of people who are kind enough to give up their couch for a night or two in order to meet new people. Unfortunately I booked my trip last minute and there was no one for me to crash with. So I stuck to hostels.

I got there and realized that I forgot to print out directions to my hostel and that I didn’t have internet in order to look it up! So I roamed around the streets of Rome as nightfall surrounded me. Eventually I was able to find directions to the hostel. On the way, I stopped at a local restaurant in order to eat before it got too late and also watch the second half of the Italy vs. Germany football game! I had a pizza and good Italian wine and watch Italy win the game! The city was going crazy afterward–people in cars were driving outside of the windows and honking the whole night! I got to my hostel and went to bed in order to rest up for a busy day.

The next day, I decided to walk around the city and start with the Colosseum. But first, I had to book another hostel because I only booked one for one night. I walked from hostel #1 to hostel #2 which took around 40 minutes. It was already hot! And it was much more humid and Rome than in Madrid and I was already sweating. I dropped off my things at my second hostel and then proceeded to walk to the Colosseum. The walk was not too bad, but it was very hot and there was hardly any shade on the streets. But, alas, I came to the Colosseum!

Me at the Colosseum!

The Colosseum was amazing. It was hard to believe that this has been here for thousands of years! Imagining the gory scenes that happened in this arena was mind blowing. After the colosseum, I just walked around Rome. I decided to not to go the Roman Forum because I could see into it from the outside. Therefore, I just toured around that area. I went and saw a Dali exhibit at the museum and then decided to go to the Trevi Fountain. My trusty map didn’t lead me to where I needed to go, but I ended up walking past some other beautiful buildings! That included some building right next to Trevi that had guards with machine guns! When I got to Trevi, I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. Though I was surprised at how small the area was that it was in. I thought that it would be a HUGE square with this fountain, but it was rather small with a huge fountain! Here is a picture of me in front of it

Me and Trevi!

After the fountain, I decided to get gelato! There was place on the way from the fountain to the metro (which I was planning on taking) and I stopped there. I got coffee gelato and it was delicious and they gave me so much of it! My plan for the rest of the day was to take the metro for a couple of stops and walk around there because I was pursuing the landmarks on the tourist map that I got. I took the metro one stop and arrived at the Spanish steps! These steps connected the streets below to the church at the top. It reminded me a lot of the Rocky stairs in Philly!

Me at the top of the Spanish Steps

After the steps I took one more stop and ended up at some beautiful plaza. At that point I think I was suffering from heat exhaustion and decided to get some rest back at the hostel.

At the hostel, I made friends with one of the kids who I was living with and we decided to go check out fireworks that were happening near St. Peter’s basilica (not exactly there but close). We got there only for the last couple of minutes for the fireworks, but we met up with some people who my friend was staying with the next night. These guys were very nice and we decided to go to a wine bar to get the whole experience of Rome! We had wine and talked a lot–about everything from politics to the economy. It was a great night.

The next day I had to move hostels again! The hostel I moved to was only a ten minute walk away from the hostel I was at that night. I walked inside of this hostel and I felt like I was in a little kid’s house! This hostel had a lot of…character. There were stuffed animals everywhere and it was very homey. The owner was very kind as well! Anyway, I took a shower in the morning (finally now that I had a towel) and decided to cover the western part of the city since I took care of the eastern part the day before.

I started at the Colosseum as a starting point and just walked. I had no idea where I was going, except that I wanted to cover all of the landmarks on my map. I made a point to go to the Pantheon though. After walking around and admiring the city, I finally found it. And wow. I couldn’t believe it. It was definitely my favorite part of the trip I think. It was HUMONGOUS.

Me and the Pantheon

I think that picture puts it in perspective. The inside was equally as amazing. Here is the favorite picture that I took of it:

Inside of the Pantheon

After that I walked across of the Tiber river and around that part of Rome. I found a place called Beer Land and couldn’t believe it! I haven’t had a good craft beer the whole summer and I definitely was missing it. I relaxed there for a little bit before continuing my journey. I walked along the Tiber (down by the river) and ended up at the Vatican in about 20 minutes! Wow. The Vatican. I am not religious at all but seeing the Basilica was amazing. I went into St. Peter’s basilica and it was amazing. Definitely the most impressive religious building that I have seen (and it should be considering the Pope lives there!).

Me in the Basilica

After that I tried to go into the Museum, but it was closed Oh well. I heard that it was very packed and crowded.

That night I met some people in my hostel and we went out to dinner, walked around, and then hung out at the hostel and drank some wine. It was great! There were two American girls and a guy from Brazil. It was very fun!

However, the next morning is when the problems started. I got woken up by the guy who was sleeping above me on the bunk and the owner of the hostel asking if I had anything stolen. I had not, but the guy above me had a whole bag stolen! Except, the owner said that she found my wallet in the girls bathroom. Oh, okay. I did not put that there. And there were 40 euros missing from there. Okay. Not the biggest thing. At least my stuff didn’t get stolen. But then I couldn’t find my shoulder bag. Hmm.. It turns out that the owner found it on the couch in front of the entrance next to a black bag that didn’t belong to anyone in the hostel. All of the things that were inside of my bag including my passport (!) was in the black bag! Wow. Well nothing was stolen. Its weird that that was missing while the person who took the bag from the guy above me didn’t take my iPad (which was sitting out) or my camera (which they knocked down in the process of taking my wallet). Weird.

Anyway, I left and then just explored the city and went home. I got home from the airport just in time to see the end of the Spain-Italy football match! Go Spain! It was amazing to see them win and the whole city was absolutely wild.

Overall, I couldn’t be more happy with the trip. I can’t believe I was actually in Italy!! Ah, I wish I could go back all around Italy. It was amazing.

I love Madrid. I’ve never seen a city so alive. As you all probably know (or if you haven’t heard/don’t care), Spain took Italy 4-0 in the EuroCup last night. Pat and I went to an Irish pub in Malasaña where I used to watch the matches with Chere when we lived here. Of course it was packed, but we got a pretty great spot, met a few dudes from Sweden that work for IBM, had a few beers and some nachos, and watched Spain whoop some ass. The streets were full of people (I mean FULL–traffic was stopped) after the match, and it seemed that everyone in the entire city paraded down to the capital building for a giant street party. We stayed together as a group with about 10 people from the pub where we watched the game, but ended up losing everyone, and then miraculously re-finding some of them on the walk down to the capital. Here is a video I took along the walk, beer in hand.

After hanging out in the plaza for a few hours we decided that it wasn’t going to stop until sunrise and decided to call it a night. What a great day to be in Spain!

I learned a few things this weekend.

1) Breaking your dominant hand makes most things reaally really difficult. This list of things includes, but is not limited to: typing, writing your rent check, cutting veggies, applying nail polish, washing your hair, opening and closing windows, washing dishes, applying liquid eyeliner, sleeping comfortably…You get the picture.

2) My boyfriend is quite nice. He’s been helping me with the aforementioned things. I haven’t asked him to help me wash my hair though…yet.

3) I don’t actually have iPhone insurance. So, broken screen it is.

4) Despite all of the above, it’s still possible to have a great weekend.

My attempt at taking notes right-handed from a phone call at work on Friday — Meal I somehow managed to make for T-Man (teriyaki marinated chicken) — our respective roommates playing darts on Saturday night

Crowd that gathered at a local pub to watch Spain beat Italy — Barbecue! This may be becoming a weekly event. — US Olympics Gymnastics trials HECKYES. So sad about Nastia Liukin.

We’re having a barbecue on the 4th and I’m so excited to whip up whatever I can for the occasion. I’m going to make baked beans with the help of T-Man’s crockpot, and maybe some salsa and guacamole. If I’m feeling extra motivated, I may even make a batch of my mom’s frozen margarita slushies! Her stuff has a serious kick!

What is everyone else looking forward to making (and eating) this week?

I leave you with a video from Jenna Marbles, who I love and who absolutely gets it spot on when she describes having a broken hand!

Wow! I should dream big more often, voice my desires to the cosmos. Spain is officially the best tea

Wow! I should dream big more often, voice my desires to the cosmos.

Spain is officially the best team there is and <del>ever will be</del>. (In my mind’s eye, there’s an ascending Mexico so I l have to leave some wiggle room.)

On Sunday, Spain won its third consecutive national championship — Euro Cup ’12. It was a decisive 4-0 show over Italy. No “boring” Spanish play on display. La Furia Roja came out attacking and went to halftime up 2-0. The third goal came late in the second half from substitute extraordinaire Fernando Torres.

And there’s more! Minutes later he manuevers a brilliant pass for his Chelsea teammate Mata.

So if you’re counting, that’s three goals and an assist for Torres for the tournament.

In the end, what catapulted Torres to the top of the leaderboard was what handicapped him too: He had been benched for much of the tournament. Playing far fewer minutes than the other top-scorers.

That Spain won wasn’t a big surprise, but that freaking Fernando Torres took the Euro Cup 2012 Golden Boot award was. I couldn’t dream that. I just wanted him to get a chance to play in the final.

All who thought that would happen, please raise your hand. Bend at the elbow. Pat yourself on the back. And go buy a lottery ticket.

The cosmos are on your side.

BOSTON (CBS) – Adam Kaufman is back for another edition of “5 Questions,” this tim

BOSTON (CBS) – Adam Kaufman is back for another edition of “5 Questions,” this time joined by Damon Amendolara to get his takes on the hottest stories in Boston sports.

Starting off on the hardwood; the Boston Celtics re-signed Kevin Garnett to a three-year, $34 million deal over the weekend. The question now is, will Ray Allen follow in KG’s footsteps?

“5 Questions” With DA: [worldnow id=7459374 width=385 height=288 type=video]

Moving to the other team in their off-season, the Boston Bruins kept quiet the first day of NHL free agency. Peter Chiarelli said it will likely remain that way, but is this the right move for the B’s?

Kalman: Don’t Be Surprised With B’s Silence

As for the Red Sox, David Ortiz was named their lone All-Star on Sunday. With a payroll of $173-million payroll, is it disappointing they only have one player going to Kansas City for the mid-summer classic?

With Kaufman and DA both Syracuse alum, they had to get some Orange talk in there. Who will be the better draft pick: Chandler Jones on the Patriots or Fab Melo for the Celtics?

And last but not least, Kaufman gives DA a little guff for Italy’s loss to Spain in the Euro Cup over the weekend. Accepting the defeat, DA gives a PSA for all those not into soccer, yet…

Fernando Torres, winner of the Golden Boot Spain showcased masterclass soccer yesterday to beat Ital

Fernando Torres, winner of the Golden Boot

Spain showcased masterclass soccer yesterday to beat Italy 4-0 and become the first nation to win three major titles consecutively: Euro Cup, World Cup, Euro Cup. And it did so without a clash of egos.

By contrast, Netherlands melted down in group stage and fell well short of expectations. Arjen Robben ripped his jersey off and stormed out of the stadium because he was upset over being substituted by the coach. The rifts were evident.

Unity leads to victory

Spain demonstrated how to win. Top-notch players weren’t selfish, setting up goals for others instead of taking it themselves. Fernando Torres humbly hooked a pass to a comrade on a shot he could have easily made himself. It was the last goal of Cup. Such selflessness could have cost him the Golden Boot award.

This team triumph is a lesson for the church. Our culture tells us that individuals get the victory (Superman, Rambo and a host of movies promote this myth). But the Bible tells us it is His church, a collection of people, that will prevail. I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. — Mt. 16:18 NIV.

To achieve this utterly crucial unity (see Acts for examples of unity = revival), there is a need for humility, always out of vogue with the flesh. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. — Lu. 14:11 NIV. Robben should learn from the Bible.

A:

Well, it’s not really “news” because I watched it happen, but it was Spain winning the Euro Cup.

That was very exciting. It was so nice to watch the huge smile on my boyfriend’s face, and his eccentric cheering, when Spain scored those 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and then finally the 4th and winning goal!

Spain really is one of the best sports teams in the world at this moment. They won the last Euro Cup (which was 4 years ago), the World Cup, and now won the Euro Cup again. Plus, Real Madrid and Barcelona are probably the two best teams to watch throughout the season.

So, it was was great “news” to watch them win!

This weekend I went to Lagos, Portugal and it was amazing. It was an organized trip with Discover Sevilla. The guides are awesome. They provide transportation from Seville to Portugal and to all the beaches and get you discounts at certain restaurants, got us an awesome hotel right on the beach, and a whole lot more. And it was very inexpensive. Check them out!

We left on Friday after classes. When we got here it was so exciting, our hotel was literally on one of the most beautiful beaches that i have ever seen.

hen they too us to Nah Nah Burger whose Toucan Burger is one of the 50 best burgers in the world. It was delicious. Then we went to this place called Grand Cafe, which is a club, restaurant, bar for the night. It was nice because we got to hang out with people from other programs living in Seville.

We stayed at the Carvi Hotel, which is on the baeach called Praia da Dona Ana.

That night ont he way to grand cafe a few friends an di stopped into a local store which had amazing bags, jewelry and other gifts, really inexpensive, right on

the street where all of the local bars and restaurants are. We spoke to a Portuguese couple in Spanish and they answered us in Portuguese. When that didn’t suffice then we spoke in English. The had a ten year old small bird in the store that they were trying to convince us was battery powered. We were all cracking up.

The next day I went on a Sangria boat cruise to see the caves off the coast of Lagos. They were so beautiful. Then we dived and swam in the ocean bit. Im not even going to lie, i was so afraid to jump but it was worth it. I thought that the water would be like ice but it wasnt that bad.

Then we went to another beach that was windy as anything. Sand literally stuck to us but the restaurants were awesome. it was called Meia Pria. Travelling with the Discover Sevilla group also got us discounts at this place.

Then we went to what is known as the End of the World on the Western tip of Portugal which is the end of Europe. In older times it was literally though to be the end of all land, you know before everyone realized that there were continents and the earth was round. But the view was absolutely spectacular. I would recommend going to see the sunset but make sure to carry a jacket because it will be freezing. The lookout point is on the edge of a cliff .

There is so much Beauty in the world. We just have to take advantage of it. You don’t even need to travel to see such beauty. Stop and take a moment to really appreciate the beauty of your own area. Sometimes we really do take our own natural resources for granted and this trip made me appreciate them even more.

The next day we went to this beach on the west coast that’s known for surfing. I didn’t get a lesson but it looked amazing. Then we headed back to Seville just in time to catch the Europcup Finals between Spain and Italy!!!! we didn’t eve go home. WE took our sand covered tired selves straight to the pub and watched the game. It was incredible. The game was kind of anticlimactic as Italy didn’t eve make one goal. But You can complain No hay dos sin tres. Spain got there three, I was here when it happened and I dont have school today because of it.

We went home, showered finally, went back out for tapas and then went to San Fernando Street near Reales Alcazers and the University of Sevilla. There were literally thousands of people in the street, rejoicing with their flags, lighting firewroks, jumping in the fountain. It was insane. Everyone was singing the songs that the Spainards sing during the Futbol games. Sube el mano y grita gol! Yo Soy Espanol!

So insane ill post a few videos later. Then we went down to Calle Betis and found all of our friends from Lagos and other people from Seville and had a grand old time.

I will post more picture and videos as the days go by but time to study for midterms. Wish me luck.

Gay Pride festival setup in Montjuic area

As it was July 1st, it signaled a lot of things for the city of Barcelona. On the first day of each month, many museums are free to the public. On July 1st, particularly, there are also many /many/ sales going through various stores in the city. One can only imagine how crowded every street becomes with tourists and locals careening to see museums and purchase discounted items. Fortunately, the sales go on throughout the month, but going on the first day just means you get first pick at the selection rather than leftovers.

Catalan art museum we visited

On this particular day, it also signaled the Euro Cup 2012 final match in which Spain was a participant. And finally (as far as I know), there was a gay pride festival parade in Montjuic, though that may have been cancelled because of the crummy weather. The city was buzzing with excitement, needless to say.

Two other interns and I decided to visit the natural Catalan art museum in Montjuic this morning and found it to be rather dull. Going through room after room of Catalan art, it all seemed very similar and lacking variation. I don’t think I would have been happy if I had to pay for it.

It was pouring. This is when we were hiding against a food stand with a small hood above us

On our way out of the museum, we felt small droplets of water and realized it may rain soon so we headed towards the metro. Before we knew it, it started pouring! We ran for cover under a hooded area and tried to wait out the storm. When it seemed to be slowing down, we started to move towards the metro again. Before we could make it to the metro, the storm picked up even worse than earlier and we attempted to take cover under the hood of a food stand near the magic fountain. In a matter of minutes, unfortunately, we were soaking wet.

Instead of just going home, I ventured off to a busier street and attempted to check out the sales. As I expected, everything was even more crowded in the stores. After about 30 minutes of wandering around and getting rained on a little more, I eventually headed back to my home stay, took a hot shower, a took a siesta. It was still raining when I awoke.

Euro Cup 2012 winners: Spain!

After I got up, I waited around until about 8:15 and then left to go to a restaurant where I was meeting a friend to have dinner and watch the Euro Cup final match. It was really exciting to hear all of the people in the restaurant express mutual feelings during the game. Whenever Spain would score, the entire restaurant would erupt in applause and cheers. It was fantastic. Along with this, the food my friend and I ate in the restaurant was great as well. I really enjoyed that atmosphere. The best part was definitely when Spain won the Euro Cup after dominating against Italy (The rain outside had finally stopped as well, leaving really cool evening weather). Viva España!

I planned an outing to the Komische Oper Berlin last semester. I researched all the operas that would be playing during the time we are here. I did not, however, look to much further into the plays than the provided description on the website. By that I mean I did not at all read any further into the plays offered than the provided description on the website. This is how we ended up attending on of the most bizarre shows I’ve ever seen.

We went to the Komische Oper Berlin. The building itself is modern-ish on the outside and beautiful on the inside.

The show itself only had one actress. She seemed throughout the play to be fighting an inner battle against what she wants to do and what she knows she has to do. However, she refers to her two conflicting desires as separate people, sisters both named Anna. More or less, she appears insane. Anna (the one woman in the show) sings about her struggles to climb the cabaret ladder in American cities in order to send the money she makes home to Louisiana so her family may build a house.

The show did not have an intermission and lasted somewhere around an hour. It was not like anything I have ever seen before. Of the two shows I have seen on this trip (I also saw Phantom of the Opera with Heath, Geoffrey, and Lauren in NYC the night before we all flew to Europe), I’m going to have to say Phantom was my favorite. I guess that is part of going new places, you get to experience things (really weird opera shows) that you have never done before.

After we left the opera, we went to the Brandenburg Gate to the EuroCup Fan Zone that was set up there. This area had a ton of police officers checking bags and patting people down before you could enter. Once inside it made sense why – there were thousands of people there watching the game! Germany was playing that night so there were more people than I imagine are present on other nights. There were beer tents and sangria tents all over the area. I bought a headband with German flags on it that light up when I turn it on.

Fan Zone was very fun. Germany won but we left a little early to avoid the crazy masses leaving the area after the game. I did not make it back to fan zone again, but it was definitely a great time and an experience you cannot get anywhere else except Europe. Go Deutschland!

Yesterday was a very interesting golf day. Me, my sister and our father went by car (I drove) to the golf club. On the first hole it started raining, but just dripping in the beginning, but after 5 minutes we were soaked. I must have been really tired this morning since I put on sunscreen but forgot my umbrella at home.

After 9 holes we felt like it was time to go home. Both the bunker and the green were oceans, and the ball just got stuck in the water…

Later in the evening we were watching the finale of the European Cup in Football and Spain won against Italy with 4-0, and they rocked the whole game!

Today I´m going in to town to buy some more stuff for my trip! =)

Two weekends ago, my wife and I decided to go and check out the Euro Cup at none other that the Fifty/50, a sports bar in Wicker Park that appeals to the non-hipsters in the neighborhood. That’s right people; you can get away from the Hipsters in Wicker Park. We also go there because the bar food is fantastic, and the people watching is just as good – jocks, yuppies, middle aged folks, and your occasional tourist. Some people may say it’s a bit chachi. However, at this point I’ll take chachi over your token tattooed Hipster drinking his Three Floyd’s IPA, and looking like some he’s prepping for an Urban Outfitter’s catalog photo shoot.

Either way, on a bright, Sunday Chicago afternoon, with England playing Italy on tap, we walked into a bar of contradiction. There was a random group of middle-aged Italian men upstairs who sang and cheered with a gusto only Italians can sing and cheer with. Also, there were some Senior citizens that slowly made their way out of the bar during the penalty shootout. They were obviously not there for the game.

Finally, you had a few Neanderthal looking dudes, who were definitely professional football players. How did we come to this conclusion? They were with some exceptionally good-looking women.

A note to really good-looking women who love to date football players:

There’s a tech startup Mecca right here in Chicago, with tons of smart, well funded dudes hitting happy hours in West Loop establishments. These prospects will have a longer shelf life than that buff dude with the five-year NFL career and future bankruptcy. Make sure you check out this Sports Illustrated story before you date your next Neanderthal. It states that 78% of NFL players go bankrupt within two years of retiring from the league.

Lesson: go after the techie! He’s into food, microbrews, and he’ll be able to afford your spray tan well into your forties. What are you waiting for?
