EUROPEAN champions Spain are not ranked number one in the world currently for nothing. The winners of Euro08 has set a world record for consecutive victories when they won their 15th game straight in a 2-0 win over South Africa on Saturday.

More importantly, Spain have now gone 35 games without losing, a feat that puts them alongside only Brazil’s 1994 World Cup winning side.

While the Dunga-captained side had been criticised for being too boring and defensive, the one-touch, free-flowing football of Spain ‘09 has been winning fans and plaudits alike over.

However, while Spain are one win or draw away from breaking Brazil’s record, the Spanish conquistadors have yet to win the World Cup, a quest they will attempt to achieve in South Africa next year.

But can Spain ‘09 be considered better than Brazil ‘94 if the former breaks Brazil’s record?

Dopo la vittoria contro la Fiorentina, a Roma, s’era ormai ristabilito tutto. Il gruppo, la squadra, il modulo, il cervello, le gambe, la mentalità dei ragazzi è tornata quella di prima.  Il film era già cominciato, ed i ragazzi si son seduti, in ritardo, ma si son seduti, per gustarselo. C’era un solo posto libero in questo cinema, in questo grande spettacolo che si chiama Roma.

Quel posto era di Jeremy Menez, l’ultimo arrivato, per certi sensi il più aspettato. Poi deriso, accantonato, quasi non considerato. E’ brutto per un ragazzo di 21 anni arrivare accompagnato dagli squilli di tromba e finire dopo appena 12 presenze (appena 3 partite da titolare) sottocoperta. Diciamo pure che in questa Roma che a fatica ha ritrovato forma e carattere, che ha dovuto oltrepassare ostacoli imponenti (come il Chelsea), e più piccoli ma comunque importanti (vedi il Lecce o il Cluj) nessuno avrebbe dato spazio al “nuovo“. Ci piace sempre rifugiarci nella vecchia guardia quando dobbiamo vincere per forza. Effettivamente la partita di Sabato si doveva vincere, per avvicinarci ancora di più al quarto posto e per continuare nella striscia di risultati positivi. Ma il caso, la fortuna, ha voluto che Mirko Vucinic per un affatticamento muscolare ha dovuto dare forfait.

E’ così che sbocciano i grandi amori. Dalla casualità, quasi dalla sfortuna. Leggendo il nome di Menez prima della partita nella formazione titolare ho fatto una smorfietta, lo ammetto. Dopo averlo visto smarcare 5 avversari in un sol colpo, e tirare con quella tale sicurezza, la smorfietta si è trasformata in sorriso.

Jeremy Menez è stato di gran lunga il migliore in campo, anzi, ha illuminato d’immenso una partita che in realtà stava prendendo la piega di tutte le altre partite che la Roma ha ormai sadicamente catalogato come partite da perdere. Quelle contro le squadre piccole, le neo-promosse o le prossime a retrocedere, che si chiudono in difesa, mettendo le sorti della partita nelle mani del portiere, che spesso si trasforma in un Buffon. Sorrentino Sabato è stato l’ennesimo Buffon, dopo Storari, Amelia, Antonioli e chi più ne ha più ne metta, ho avuto veramente l’impressione che la partita con il Chievo sarebbe finita con uno 0 a 0 tondo tondo, che ci avrebbe fatto male più di una sconfitta.

Ma non ho fatto caso che, nel trambusto, nella noiosa confusione in quel di Verona, c’era un protagonista in più. Un predestinato.

La magia di Jeremy Menez, che ci regala quella che è, a mio parere, la vittoria più importante dopo quella del Derby, ha un’importanza determinante non solo per il gruppo, per la classifica, per la striscia positiva. No, finalmente l’ultimo posto, vuoto, è stato occupato.  E allora, ora come prima, posso dirlo con un sorriso in bocca che in realtà mi manca da tempo. Bienvenu Jeremy.

Non comprate il libro. Prendetelo come un ordine, un suggerimento o un consiglio, ma il libro di Cassano consolida ancora di più l’obbrobrio che Antonio sta dando della sua immagine, in tutta Italia, esclusa Genova ovviamente, dove i suoi tifosi, giustamente ubriacati dai suoi numeri funambolici, non riescono a guardare la realtà in faccia: Cassano è un falso, un ipocrita, è l’Italiano perfetto. Per chi volesse farsi un’idea (senza comprare il libro), ecco un articolo del buon Daniele Lo Monaco, che raccoglie tutti i passi nei quali Cassano parla della sua esperienza a Roma, con i vari retroscena, i vari episodi, che tanto fanno incuriosire i tifosi di tutta Italia, ma che in realtà a me fanno ridere come un matto.

Antò, che hai fatto, Antò?; direbbe il mitico Carletto Zampa. Aggiungo io: Antò, ma dove sei arrivato? Ad auto-prenderti per il culo di fronte a tutto il Paese? L’elenco delle stronzate dette dal nostro neo-Boccaccio, alias Antonio Cassano, è interminabile. Ma la cosa che mi piace sottolineare è che ormai Cassano c’ha preso gusto, si è creato un personaggio, una sorta di alter-ego che è un misto fra Totò e Maradona, ed è ormai convinto di far tendenza.

Spalletti ha definito il libro di Cassano “Il manuale del giovane calciatore“, e di fronte a tutte queste iniziative delle squadre di Serie A (in testa, guardate un pò, la Sampdoria del nostro Antonio) per riportare i vivai italiani a livelli più consoni, di fronte alla recessione che (si dice) dovrebbe colpire anche i calciatori miliardari, Cassano risponde con un bel: “Ma che me ne fotte a me, prendo soldi, mi alleno poco, dico stronzate, parlo con la mano davanti alla bocca per non farmi capire da tutti, mi faccio 3 veline al giorno, distruggo le bandierine, prendo a pugni l’arbitro…ma tutti mi osannano“.

Allora concludo: nel pieno dell’era-Mourinho, che esclude gente come Adriano per 5 minuti di ritardo, e Balotelli per il suo fare spocchioso (e non fa male, visto quanto sono pagati i calciatori), questa auto-biografia di Cassano distrugge tutto quello che di buono si sta cercando di fare per cambiare l’immagine del nostro calcio nel mondo, facendoci ripiombare tremendamente nella realtà, con veline, Porsches, gioielli, ritardi e capricci. Di Cassano qualcuno ammira la sua sincerità. A me fa schifo, perchè so che tutto quello che Antonio ha detto in 80 pagine scarse di libro, potrà essere cancellato da un momento all’altro.

Tifosi della Samp, ricordatevi bene la frase “Resterò per sempre a Genova“. Verrò a rinfacciarvela quando il vostro idolo andrà  a prendere una barca di soldi da Moratti, Cobolli-Gigli, Berlusconi o Abramovic.

Left St. Louis after running a gazillion errands on Friday morning. Was in the air at 1.30 to Detroit and then to Amsterdam at 5.30.  I was really happy with my packing skills, even with Jan´s winter clothes, I carried on my small roller suitecase and my laptop bag for a month of traveling. So far, I haven´t thought of anything I´ve forgotten yet. Didn´t sleep much on the plane, maybe 2/3 hours tops. Got into Amsterdam at 6.45 am, went through customs with no issue and then got a Starbucks coffee and waited for Jan.

Jan met me a little after 9 and then we took the train/bus back to Wageningen about an hour away. It was so great to see Jan and catch up. We got back Wageningen about 10.30 and most of his roommates were still asleep. Wageningen is a small college city and this has been an interesting week to visit because the first year students arrived Friday and there is all sorts of orientation programming going on during the day and then the 5 fraternities, i.e. hogwarts houses sort of, throw parties. So we dropped off my stuff and then went for a walk. In the middle of the city there is a farmer´s market and we had raw herring, a dutch delicacy, kind of like sardines but bigger. After that we went for lunch and met Milou, Jan´s girlfriend. We came back and got a bike for me, borrowed from one of Jan´s roommates. One of the most shocking things arriving in Holland was the number of bikes. Everyone has a bike and they ride or take public transit, cars are the minority. My bike was a little big and almost immediately on it I fell off… not too badly bruised. Once I had wheels, we went to Jan´s lab and I took micro nap #1 of the day. After the lab, I got a tour of Jan´s frat, watched their welcome play, and met some of his friends. Milou was teaching interested first years how to drive a pony carriage and after the play we went with her and professor on a carriage ride through the woods.

We came back around 8pm, had dinner and I took another longer nap and then we went back to the frat for the welcome parties to recruit first year students. They had two options 1. Silent disco, where everyone got headphones as they walked in and there were two channels you could pick from to dance to and 2. the Rodeo party with a cowboy theme. After we warmed up at the Rodeo, we really had a good time at the Silent Disco. It was so funny to see a silent room of people singing and dancing, but no music. We didn´t leave the party until 5am, so after traveling all day with two mini naps I was finally asleep at 5.30am on Sunday. I was exhausted.

Today Jan and I just hung around. Sundays all the shops in town are closed. We went for a walk along a stream off the Rhine and then sat outside at a cafe and had sodas. Nothing too major. Tonight we had Chinese food, a little different from U.S. Chinese, very good. All the roommates, Jan and Milou went out to the Frat party again tonight, but I was pretty pooped from yesterday, so I stayed home, wrote this and watched olympics.

It has been so great to catch up with Jan and see where he lives/works after he spent 6 months with us. I really like Holland and will come back again I think to do more of the tourist stuff in Amsterdam. Tomorrow, I leave for Cologne, Germany. Jan says it is a great old German town and is something to see, so I´m off to check it out.

So it’s been over a month since my last post and that’s pretty sad! Since my last post I’ve traveled to Switzerland, watched Italy vs. Romania in Zurich, slept in an airport, somehow broke my iPhone, shaved my head and started playing tennis! Yup I shaved my head and started to play tennis on the same day! I enjoyed playing tennis so much that the day after I went out and bought Top Spin 3 for XBOX 360. So far in my virtual career I’ve made $22 000, I’m ranked 19th, I’ve won one title and have a record of 6-2. In real life its the complete opposite. I can’t beat Age, I have mental lapses during the game and my head burns since I have a shaved head now!

I’ll write about my trip in another post because it deserves its own post. Other random shit that’s going on in my life. The iPhone 3G comes out Friday and like many pissed off Canadians I am not going to buy one, at least for now I’m not! The rates are insane and really not worth it. Us Canadians have pissed off Rogers so much that they released a promotion today (July 9th) that will allow you to add-on a 6GB data plan onto any one of their voice plans which seems more reasonable than 400MB.

Also this weekend is Edgefest. Headlining this years Edgefest will be Linkin Park and Stone Temple Pilots. Not only am i stoked about seeing STP for the first time but also finally getting the chance to see USS live. It should be a fun day @ Downsview Park. Stay tuned for a review of the show come Sunday or Monday (that’s if I don’t get lazy again!).

Tutto liscio, questa volta non c’è stato spazio per le sorprese, le cenerentole e le out-siders. Questa volta l’Europa è nelle mani giuste, la coppa è stata alzata dalla squadra che ha dato spettacolo, ha divertito, ha concretizzato, ha difeso bene, ed ha quindi meritato, ed è già una notizia, visto il successo del catenaccio Greco di 4 anni fa.

La Spagna si porta a casa il trofeo ambito dopo 44 anni di aria fritta, di gironi vinti a punteggio pieno e ottavi o quarti disastrosi. Finalmente dopo quasi mezzo secolo gli spagnoli possono rispolverare quella parola che sembrava ormai sepolta : Campeones. Fantastica la vittoria degli spagnoli, una cavalcata trionfale, apparte i dissapori e i dispiaceri che ci hanno dato gli spagnoli con quei fatali rigori, alzi la mano chi, quando capitan Casillas ha alzato la Coppa a Vienna, ha osato dire: “Non l’hanno meritata”. Ed invece la Spagna ha rispettato i pronostici, compreso il mio che la dava per favorita. Una squadra giovane, ma allo stesso tempo piena di esperienza. Fabregas, Xavi, Iniesta, Senna, lo stesso Torres, Ramos, sono giocatori che non arrivano ai 30 anni ma che giocano come se li avessero, e che hanno già alzato coppe nazionali ed europee, ho le hanno viste alzare ad altri come secondi. Freschezza, esperienza, continuità sopratutto. Non c’è stata una partita nella quale la Spagna del “sabio” Aragones non ha tenuto sempre palla e non ha fatto gioco. Gli stessi spagnoli si sono “congratulati” con noi, quando Aragones, Torres e Casillas hanno rivolto il pensiero ad una settimana fa, quando di fronte a loro c’eravamo noi, e li abbiamo portati fino ai rigori: “Senza dubbio il match con l’Italia è stato più duro e soprattutto più emozionante” ha detto Casillas. Grazie Iker, ma questa coppa ve la meritate voi.

Sì, perchè alla fine la Spagna è una delle poche squadre che negli ultimi tempi ha vinto qualcosa dando spettacolo. Non è successo in Italia con la mia Roma, per meriti, diciamo, interisti ed arbitrali, non è successo in Inghilterra con l’Arsenal, frenato dal Manchester di Ronaldo e dalla poca esperienza, non è successo in Champions, nè ai Mondiali che abbiamo vinto noi, per non parlare di 4 anni fa con la vittoria greca. Finalmente il calcio spettacolare ha vinto, ha vinto il calcio del 4-2-3-1, o del 4-1-3-2, anche se questa finale la Spagna l’ha giocata senza Villa, e con una punta. E che punta, Fernando Torres, finalmente convince, nel momento più importante, più difficile, dimostrando a tutto il mondo che non è un prodigio incompiuto. Cristiano Ronaldo trema, e dalla Sardegna guarda con paura Fernando Torres, “El Nino”, re di Spagna, re d’Europa.

Un pensiero va anche ai tedeschi, qualche giorno fa avevo citato la celebre frase (“Il calcio è uno sport che si gioca in 22 e alla fine vince la Germania“), forse sarebbe ora di modificare l’aforisma. Non vince, la Germania, però, anche se con tante difficoltà, arriva sempre lì, ad un passo dal trionfo. Sono 12 anni che i tedeschi non alzano una coppa, ma ci sono andati vicini innumerevoli volte. Nel momento decisivo gli uomini decisivi non si sono presentati. Podolski un fantasma, Schwecc. ecc. (quello con i capelli ossigenati, insomma) impreciso, Frings lottatore ma mai incisivo, Ballack, il capitano, gladiatore sconfitto, eterno sconfitto. In Inghilterra si divertono a chiamarlo “uomo d’argento”, per le innumerevoli medaglie d’argento che ha in bacheca, sempre ingiusti gli inglesi, sempre bravi a chiacchierare, che ci giocassero loro a centrocampo contro Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Senna, Xabi Alonso, Silva…mi dispiace per Michael, prima il Brasile (6 anni fa), poi il Manchester, poi la Spagna. I migliori del mondo, tutti contro di lui nel momento più importante. Ma prima o poi la spunterai, Michael.

Ma è giusto concludere con un tributo alla Spagna, e un grazie. Sì, un infinito grazie per aver chiuso quest’era che sembrava cominciare, la nuova era del catenaccio, per aver scongiurato la scomparsa dei fantasisti, e per aver ricordato a tutti come si vince un Europeo. Giocando a calcio, divertendosi, rischiando, segnando. Questa è la Spagna, signori, questi sono i nuovi campioni d’Europa. Grazie Spagna.

Yo sólo voy a hacer un breve apunte respecto a la Eurocopa de ayer. ¿Qué decir? ¡Pues que me lo pasé pipa viendo el partido! Sin embargo, me pareció mucho más emocionante el partido contra Italia, sobre todo la tanda de penaltis.

¿Hombres del partido? Torres, S. Ramos y Senna, éste último no paró de correr detrás del balón hasta el último minuto.

En otro orden de cosas, olvidándonos por un momento de los españoles. ¿Os habéis fijado en Christoph Metzelder?

Tanto Ballack, tanto Klose… El central alemán parece Leónidas. Me pasé todo el partido pensando que en cualquier momento le reventaría el pecho a Torres e iba a gritar: This is Deutschland!

Vaya barbota que lucía el tipo. Tras esta incorporación basura a la red y liberarme de mi semen mental por unos días, os dejo. ¡Adios!

Die Euro08 ist zu Ende. Vielerorts wird Bilanz gezogen; eine überaus erfolgreiche wie ich meine. Mein Fazit des diesjährigen Spektakels fällt durchaus auch positiv aus. Denn

• mit Spanien wurde letztlich die richtige Mannschaft verdient Europameister, auch wenn mein Herz für die deutsche Nationalelf ein wenig stärker schlug;
• ein Spiel dauert mehr als 90 Minuten, und nicht immer gewinnen die Deutschen;
• die Holländer sind zwar viel zu früh ausgeschieden, haben sich aber in die Herzen von ganz Bern gespielt und gefant;
• die Türken haben mit Leidenschaft die bei vielen Schweizerinnen und Schweizern nach dem Skandal-Spiel von 2005 verlorene Sympathie zurück erspielt (man, spiel[t]en diese Türken toll – und Faith Terim ist ja auch gar nich so ein übler Kerl ;
• die Russen haben nicht gleich alles überrannt, auch wenn ihr Spiel teilweise berauschend war;
• die Schweizer und die Österreicher sind zwar früh ausgeschieden, aber eben nicht zu früh;
• die Stadt Bern war wohl mit Abstand die “geilste” Fanzone (danke, liebe Oranjes – ich komme garantiert wieder nach Holland);
• und auch in der Stadt Thun war allen Unkenrufen und schlechten-Besucherzahlen-in-der-UBS-Arena zum Trotz das Euro08-Gefühl zu sehen und nach gewonnenen Spielen auch per Hupkonzert zu hören.

Schade ist einzig, dass die tolle “Fieber”-Zeit nun vorbei ist. Und tatsächlich könnten zumindest wir Bernerinnen und Berner uns überlegen, ob wir uns nicht für die WM 2022 bewerben sollten… beispielsweise mit Berlin, Paris, Rom und Wien sowie mit London, Madrid, Oslo etc. etc.

Ein Zückerchen habe ich mit dem Schluss der Euro08 aber doch noch “erhalten”. Der absolute dämliche Trailer der BLS (mit Berner Marsch!!!) hat jetzt nämlich auch ausgedient…

Olé! Herzlichen Glückwunsch an die spanische Mannschaft. Mit großer Begeisterung habe ich das Spiel zwischen Deutschland und Spanien in der Kaserne in Basel gesehen, mitgefiebert und am Ende einen verdienten Europameister erlebt.

Für mich waren die Spanier die Mannschaft des Tuniers. Sie konnten alle Spiele überzeugen, haben konstant gespielt und das schnelle Kurzpassspiel und die Ballsicherheit brachten nicht nur die deutsche Abwehr oftmals in Verlegenheit.

今天我追看了精彩的决赛转播，德国跟西班牙双方的攻防战确实精彩啊，在一次机会中莱曼并没有跟莱姆沟通好导致托雷斯有机会射球，就这样德国饮恨了，可怜的巴拉克又再一次第二名，可怜的巴拉克永远的第二名 T_T

下半场并不怎么好看 不知道是德国无法进攻呢 还是没有进攻意识了，导致单方面被进攻，西班牙好多次漂亮的穿透传球+配合，不过都很可惜没把握住进球的机会。最终于1:0，西班牙获胜！

本届欧锦赛2008结束了，各位球迷关注的国际赛事上将再次转移到2010年世界杯入围赛！不过在那之前 还有我们必要关注的大量球会球员的转会新闻@_@!
