Depois de anos a penar, com Mourinhos, Benitez ou Ancelottis, finalmente o futebol está feliz. Uma obra de dois homens, dois iluminados. Dois catalães cujas decisões e competência fizeram mais pelo futuro do futebol que 20 anos de Champions League. Guardiola e Laporta são as personagens mais importantes do futebol de fato e gravata do século XXI. No mínimo.

A vitória do Barça teve duas ironias: primeiro, não devia ter acontecido, porque foram altamente beneficiados contra o Chelsea. Mas até aí foi uma qualificação para a história, contra o poder que inflacionou o futebol nos últimos anos, destruindo a democracia inerente; depois, ganhou contra-natura, a defender, a controlar… mas com a mesma inteligência táctica, mestria técnica, alma colectiva e rigor mental com que revolucionou o futebol de ataque. E, agora, o futebol moderno.

Para além da incomparável competência do treinador, que junta à capacidade de trabalho e à formação futebolística de excelência, um nível de bom senso raro, este Barça também goza de algo inigualável no futebol moderno: uma gigantesca alma! Um amor à camisola, ao símbolo, à história. Futebolística (Dream Team) e cultural (catalã).

Finalmente, a vitória deste Barça é a vitória da improbabilidade genética. É uma vitória da esquerda. Não somos todos geneticamente iguais, felizmente. Mas somos todos iguais à luz da lei, somos todos iguais no direito de acesso às oportunidades de sermos melhores, os melhores. Somos todos iguais por precisarmos sempre dos outros, do outro, mesmo do que é diferente. Os pequenos, deformados e feios do Barça impuseram-se aos perfeitos, altos e bonitos do Man U. Porque jogam um futebol que precisa do outro, porque as suas limitações físicas são, de facto, uma vantagem, porque os artistas não são perfeitos. São geniais.

A discussão entre Messi e Ronaldo promete eternizar-se. São dois fenómenos. Mas os dois melhores jogadores de futebol do Mundo, hoje, são o Iniesta e o Xavi. Os motores futebolísticos das duas melhores equipas do mundo, clube e selecção.

Eu tive o privilégio de ver o Barça jogar ao vivo, este ano. Nunca tive tanto prazer em ver o Sporting goleado. Porque só num estádio é que se percebe a dimensão futebolística deste Barça, especialmente no ataque. A perfeição táctica, as jogadas ensaiadas de futebol corrido, o posicionamento militar, o toque e a liberdade para criar, sem complexos. Só no estádio é que percebi que esta é a melhor equipa de futebol que eu vi jogar na minha vida, até hoje. A boa notícia é que, com esta Champions, a probabilidade de ser superada na história aumentou consideravelmente.

PS: Que não se justifique com o exemplo do Barça a aposta do Sporting na formação. Não só é patético, como absolutamente ilusório… Para o Barça é uma questão cultural, para o Sporting é um mero meio de financiamento, que enche o bolso sempre aos mesmos e que dá poucas alegrias aos adeptos. Até nisso, pode ser que a moda do Barça mude alguma coisa em Alvalade (os percursos de Paulo Bento e Guardiola não deixam de ser curioso: circunstancialmente paralelos, mas na essência não podiam ser mais distintos).

The emotions of football. Beautifully portrayed.

I have found a new favourite word it is the German word Schadenfreude it’s the satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else’s misfortune। What a surprise that it’s German word, I think World War 2 may have given it greater notieriety. If I used it in a sentence I would say it like this: Despite myself, I felt a Schadenfreude at England’s failure to qualify for the Euro 2008 tournament. My Schadenfreude gets peaked everytime I read the English media reporting on Euro2008 say things like “what a shame England couldn’t be here” or “It would have been interesting to see how far England could have progressed in this tournament” or this one “without England in this tournament, the excitement is not as it should be” Right before the final EURO2008 qualifying game between England and Croatia which Croatia won 3-2, Micheal Owen said that none of the Croatian players would make it in the English first 11. He was right of course however Micheal Owen meant because of playing ability and skill rather the fact the Croatians where Croatian and not English. This is the kind of attidue the English have had towards Football ever since they reckon they invented the game even though different forms of Football where being played in China and South America before the English added “rules”As the Greeks got the Acropolis kicked out of them by the Russians my dissapointment is lessened by my Schadenfreude Cup that the English team and English media keep on filling up. It’s much better to watch and read about how crap your team is playing than wish and whinge about a team that isn’t even competing. If Australia get to host the 2018 World Cup at the expense of England someone will have to come up with another word to express the satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else’s misfortune and the satisfaction or pleasure felt at my own fortune.

Abstract from our work “Explorations in football and social networks analysis: an analysis of Euro 2004″ (Revista Redes @ Universitat de Barcelona)

This article presents a new way of soccer analysis based on social network perspectives. Taking some networks from the games of the last Eurocup as a study object, we develop some constructions which mix SNA with tactics and basic strategies and also with classical soccer statistics, trying to show the potential of the combined analysis.  In the first part we present some methodological possibilities (mix density levels from a component with ball-possesion from a team, centrality level form a node with tactical expected participation from a player, ties size and key relations in a team, and many others). In the second one, we offer some possible applications of this analysis in sport-press and as technical advisory for coaches. And finally we try to support that the combination between social network analysis and soccer is done not only with methodological reasons, but with didactical and ideological reasons.
