Apparently I’ve been living under a muddy European rock for the past year, as I just heard this cover last night. House lit by candles while out my windows a canal filled with nature’s temporary rain bath, washing away any and all of winter’s unsettlings. Without a doubt, this song trumps Lykke Li’s version (no disrespect, I’m a Lykke Li fan), with its painful, broken vocals and tink-tink coffee mug additions.

I’m gobbling up play after play of this track today, like a hungry wolf tearing apart its feast.

I’m back in Los Angeles. The city of angels, sunshine and the friends in my life who have endlessly inspired me, given me wings and knocked my heart into another planet with their masses of love.
A very talented friend of mine, Saam Gabbay, snapped a few photos of his friends trying on his burning man outfits and decided to throw the photos together. This video is the outcome and damn it, his “oopsies, I just accidentally created this” style of brilliance makes me realize I can not create. But I can certainly appreciate those who can.

The song? Pshhh…just one of my favorites by one of my favorite bands.

This is a song that could be gobbled up for a sync in a heartbeat. Evoking emotion, sparse and smooth vocal arrangements and timing, simple, delicate instrumentals. You can imagine so many scenes for this song.
The scene I’d like to attach it to?
My own life. On a motorcycle headed east on the 10 freeway leaving Los Angeles and headed out to Pappy & Harriets, friends in tow and ready for a week of dusty memories.

I actually haven’t fallen in love with Mr. Waits until this moment. I’ve appreciated him and celebrated him, yet this is like my first kiss with him. I’m letting the moment last.

This past weekend I was in a taxi whipping around Paris at dusk with two strong, beautiful girl friends. We’d met there for a whirlwind trip; one training in from London, the other from Prague and me coming in from Amsterdam. We dined, saw the sights, pondered life, growth, death and love over endless glasses of wine and absorbed every moving moment together under the Eiffel Tower.
During that taxi ride, Amadou & Mariam graced the airwaves and the three of us, including our drive, paused in our conversation and just witnessed the city speed past us at that moment in time.
Moments like that are always cemented into my brain and memory and forever attached to the music playing at the time. Amadou & Mariam & Paris and Friends.
