Depuis quelques années l’édition subit la même révolution que connaît l’industrie de CD et du DVD. Face à cela, des grands groupes commencent à prendre les devants en proposant des solutions alternatives. C’est le cas de google qui à lancé le « google book search » en 2004.

Cependant ces initiatives relance le débat sur la diversité culturelle et la protection du patrimoine libraire rare face à la vulgarisation des ouvrages commerciaux. Pour y faire face la commission européenne à lancé en 2006 un projet de bibliothèque numérique européenne regroupant les ouvrages des bibliothèques nationales des 27 pays membres, mais aussi des musées et des bibliothèques européennes. L’objectif est donc la diffusion, vie internet et dans les 21 langues officielles de l’union, mais aussi la conservation d’un patrimoine culturel européen transnational constitué de livres amis aussi de photographies et d’objets matériels. Europeana à été mis en ligne en 2007 mais dès l’année suivante le prototype à du être retravaillé face à la sur fréquentation du site.

Aujourd’hui le projet est encore en phase de test mais il constitue une grande avancée dans le domaine de la diffusion du patrimoine européen en permettant à chacun d’accéder à ce dernier sans avoir à se déplacer.

because folks liked my last version of this, for your viewing pleasure, below are the books i read last week. it’s a pretty exciting list:

1. Patrik Ourednik’s Europeana: A Brief History of the Twentieth Century (Dalkey Archive, 2005): The twentieth century boiled down to painstakingly concise and shocking truths. No one is left unscathed or uncriticized in this book. Ourednik’s dry humor pairs well with sentences that are dense in their simplicity, that makes sense. For instance: “Psychiatrists said that in many people the First World War provoked traumas that had been previously hidden in the unconscious, and in the 1920s and 1930s the people started to be neurotic because they were not adapted to their inner or outer state, and in Europe in the 1960s, 25% of women and 15% of men were neurotic, and journalists called it the disease of the century. And in the 1970s the number of people suffering from depression also started to rise, and at the end of the century every fifth citizen of Europe was depress” (65). Every sentence in Europeana reads this way: biting, revealing, absurd, contradictory, a slap across an entire century’s big sweaty face.

2. Urs Allemann’s Babyfucker (Les Figues, 2010 but available now!): This is a book to talk about. This is a book you want to carry around with you, just so people can ask you what it’s about. Last week, as I was sitting at a cafe in South Bend, this slender volume lying on top of my usual stack of library books. It’s cover is a lovely yellow, it’s spine an unobtrusive pink. But the title! The title is what interests people most. So someone asks me: What’s that you’re reading? And I say: Babyfucker. Just like that. And that person responds: Hmm. There’s no follow-up question. I have to force their discomfort. I say: It’s a book about a man who fucks babies, or not. It’s this little Beckettian book, this man obsessed with the sentence, ‘I fuck babies,’ constantly repeating, ‘I fuck babies. That’s my sentence.’ Whether or not he actually fucks the babies is irrelevant to the reader, but to that person standing by your chair at the cafe, that’s the only question that matters. Here’s the thing, I haven’t even started touching the substance or the incredible writing in this book, but it’s all solid. This is an inadequate review of a truly stunning book, but I’ve only managed to do exactly what I’ve criticized that person at the cafe of doing: getting lost in the spectacle.

3. Shane Jones’s The Failure Six (Fugue State Press, 2009): I didn’t read this book last week. I read it today. This morning, in fact. Reminiscent of Ben Marcus’s Notable American Women, though the language does not jar radical displacement, this sick little fairy tale took me to a world without speech, a world of recycled bureaucracy, a place of tests and windows, foxes and leashes, men with green beards, extended onomatopoeia, geometric shapes everywhere, and certain execution. The thing is, Jones does all of this unassumingly. His writing is unadorned but somehow still poetic. This is a story about failure, but not just failing once. No, that would be too easy. These characters fail again and again, each time worse than the one before, each time more wary of punishment. I left this book feeling destitute, and that was ok by me. Shane’s gotten a lot of press lately because of the well-deserved love of his first book, Light Boxes, but people, don’t forget about this one! Love this one too! Shane makes me smile.

4. Jeff Clark’s Ruins (Turtle Point Press, 2009): [Note: I couldn't find an image for this book, which is lame, because it's gorgeous.] This slim volume of poetry is what I would want a volume of my poetry to look like, if I wrote poetry. First off, it’s hard cover, which seems like a rare artifact these days. The pages, some black some white, contain as many photographs as poems. But now to the poetry itself: many of the poems in this collection are conversations with other writers and artists, particularly the Surrealists. Clark’s poems cycle through repetition, each word carefully chosen, carefully placed. This is no surprise because Clark is also a book designer. He’s also got a lovely translation of Louis Aragon’s “Poem to Cry in Ruins.” If I knew more about poetry, I’m sure I’d say lots of smart things here, but alas, I’ll suffice to say I read & enjoyed this book a great deal and hope you will do the same.

5. Fernando Pessoa’s Book of Disquietude: Noah Cicero suggested I read this book. I don’t really remember how or why he suggested it (does context really matter?), but I read it and loved it. I’ve been told that I read the wrong version though. Published posthumously, this is a book of fragmented meditations on anything and everything but particularly loneliness. Though sometimes a bit too self-indulgent for my tastes, it’s a worthwhile read, for sure.

6. Mati Unt’s Things in the Night (Dalkey Archive, 2006): This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Seriously, it seems like I’ve liked everything I’ve read this week, and yes, I have, but Unt’s book is the whole package: sophisticated concept, moral questioning, and the writing itself!! This novel begins simply: “My Dear, I feel I owe you an explanation. / First, I have to admit that I have always had an interest in electricity.” From there, readers follow the narrator as he tries to write a book on electricity, while Estonia (and the world as a whole) creeps steadily towards disaster. Unt showcases his writerly breadth, moving between forms and styles, each one poetic and ominous. I don’t want to give away too much, but I’ve never read a hand-job scene like the one in this book! This is a book about humanity: its glory and faults, aspirations and promise of failure, and of course, the people who remain, here, in pause, waiting.

7. Steve Tomasula’s TOC (FC2, 2009): In my last post about my readings, I made it a point to say that I wasn’t including any books I read for school, but in this case, I feel like it’s necessary for me to mention TOC. I’m teaching Tomasula’s DVD novel tomorrow for my fiction writing workshop, and I can’t say how much I love this book! It’s visually stunning, cutting edge like drawing blood (& to think: if the technology had been ready for him, Steve would have had this out a decade ago!), and conceptually masterful. People haven’t paid much attention to TOC, but you should! Buy it!

União Europeia lança biblioteca on-line com mais de dois milhões de obras

A biblioteca multimédia on-line da Europa, Europeana, abriu esta quinta-feira ao público, que através da internet poderá aceder a mais de dois milhões de obras dos 27 Estados-membros da União Europeia (UE).

Esta biblioteca virtual conta com livros, mapas, gravações, fotografias, documentos de arquivo, pinturas e filmes do acervo das bibliotecas nacionais e instituições culturais de todos os países da UE, tendo, por exemplo, de Portugal, a Carta plana de parte da Costa do Brasil, um mapa de 1784.

Acessível, em todas as línguas da UE, através do endereço www.europeana.eu , a biblioteca multimédia europeia conta com material fornecido por mais de mil organizações culturais de toda a Europa, incluindo museus, como o Louvre de Paris, que forneceram digitalizações de quadros e objectos das suas colecções.

Segundo a Comissão Europeia (CE), que lançou esta iniciativa em 2005, este é “apenas o começo”, pois a ideia é expandir a biblioteca, envolvendo também o sector privado, e o objectivo é que em 2010 a Europeana dê acesso a pelo menos dez milhões de obras e tenha zonas interactivas.

“Com a Europeana, conciliamos a vantagem competitiva da Europa em matéria de tecnologias da comunicação e de redes com a riqueza do nosso património cultural. Os europeus poderão agora aceder com rapidez e facilidade, num único espaço, aos formidáveis recursos das nossas grandes colecções”, comentou o presidente da CE, Durão Barroso.

Por sua vez, a comissária europeia para a Sociedade da Informação e os Meios de Comunicação, Viviane Reding, apelou “às instituições culturais, editoras e empresas de tecnologia europeias para que alimentem a Europeana com mais conteúdos em formato digital”.

Segundo dados da Comissão da UE, desde a “abertura” da biblioteca, na manhã desta quinta-feira, foram registados dez milhões de visitas por hora, tendo esta “tempestade de interesse” forçado a deixar o website fora do ar por algum tempo para duplicar sua capacidade.

Tekijänoikeus, tuo iänikuinen puheenaihe

AVO-kurssin neljännen viikon aiheena ovat tekijänoikeudet ja käyttöoikeudet. Muut kurssilaiset ovat laatineet jo erinomaisia kirjoituksia aiheesta, katso erityisesti Teron Tekijänoikeudet luovuuden ja innovaation esteinä, Lillin todella masentava Tekijänoikeudet ja käyttöoikeudet sekä Matin erinomainen Rikki mennyt laki. Noita tekstejä lukiessa nousee kyllä kyynel silmäkulmaan. Tekijänoikeutta on luonnehdittu tietoyhteiskunnan perustuslaiksi, mutta eipä hyvältä näytä…

Omassa työssäni törmään tekijänoikeuksiin alinomaan. Osittain se johtuu omasta mielenkiinnostani asiaa kohtaan, mutta tekijänoikeus on oikeastikin kirjastoja merkittävästi käsittelevää lainsäädäntöä ja nousee siis esille toistuvasti, erilaisissa yhteyksissä. Viimeksi tänään juttelin kollegoiden kanssa kirjaston luettelointitietueiden tekijänoikeuksista ja siitä, voimmeko edelleenjaella tietueita, jotka olemme ostaneet oman organisaatiomme ulkopuolelta. Hankimme luettelointitietueita nimittäin esimerkiksi BTJ:ltä ja vaikka täällä Suomessa luettelointi- ja sisällönkuvailutyötä pidetään kirjastojen pyhimpinä tehtävinä, on sen ulkoistaminen muualla tavanomaista. Huhu kertoo, että Ruotsissa on ennakkotapaus siitä että kirjastot ovat joutuneet selvittelemään asiaa toimittajiensa kanssa.

Tämä on erittäin kiusallista, sillä nyt (viimein!!) kirjastoilla tuntuu olevan tahtotilaa lähettää tietueita “tuonne ulos”, kirjastomaailman ulkopuolelle (itse olen tämän syksyn aikana valmistellut ja organisoinut tietueiden siirtoa Euroopan digitaaliseen kirjastoon Europeanaan sekä Kansalliseen Digitaaliseen Kirjastoon). Alan sisällähän on kopioluettelointia tehty jo kauan aikaa. Kopioluettelointia on tehty myös LibraryThingin käyttäjien toimesta, lähdejärjestelmänä on käytetty esim. pääkaupunkiseudun kirjastojärjestelmää HelMetiä. Minusta tässä ei ole mitään väärää, mutta joku voi olla toista mieltä. Asiaa selvitellään, katsotaan miten se etenee.

Erään näkemyksen mukaan luottelointitietueet eivät ylitä teoskynnystä, sillä ne ovat määrämittaisia. Siitä mikä on teos ei kovin paljoa keskustella, vaikka asiaa sivuttiinkin lyhyesti, kun pääministeri Matti Vanhasen tekstariviestittelyä pengottiin julkisuudessa (ja oikeudessa). Teoskynnys on jokatapauksessa sangen matala. Tekijänoikeus muodostuu automaattisesti kun teos julkaistaan, tai “saatetaan yleisön saataville”, kuten tekijänoikeuslaki asian ilmaisee.

Tekijänoikeutta pidetään kirjastoalalla vaikeana asiana, eikä syyttä. Monet toivovat, etteivät itse törmää tekijänoikeuteen tavoin. Tekijänoikeudesta on myös liikkeellä paljon vääriä käsityksiä ja pelkoja. Eikä ihme, on sillä niin paljon peloteltu. Kirjastoammattilaisten olisi kuitenkin erittäin tärkeää tuntea kyseistä lakia sen verran, että pystyy neuvomaan asiakkaille mikä on laillista ja mikä ei. Onneksi kirjastoalan koulutuksessa asiaa käsitellään ainakin jonkin verran.

En vielä ole kuullut hyvää perustelua, miksi tekijänoikeuksien suoja-aikojen pitäisi jatkua ollenkaan tekijän kuoleman jälkeen. Pari kömpelöä yritelmää olen kuullut, irvokkain lienee se, että näillä pitkillä suoja-ajoilla rahoitetaan rahastoja, joilta taiteilijat voivat hakea apurahoja. Jep jep… asian voisi varmaan hoitaa tyylikkäämminkin, jos halua olisi.

Jos tekijänoikeus todella on tietoyhteiskunnan perustuslaki, olisi kohtuullista edellyttää että tämä perustuslaki todella säädettäisi hyvään tietoon nojautuen? Eikö tämä joka tapauksessa ole tietoyhteiskunnan tai yleensäkin rationaalisen politiikan henki? Kuten Matti yllä linkatussa kirjoituksessaan kirjoittaa, pitävät jotkut sivistyneet tahot sopivana suoja-aikana noin 15 vuotta. Nykyään se on pahimmassa tapauksessa 95 vuotta tekijän kuolemasta.

Tilannehan on tosiaan se, että suuri osa koko 1900-luvusta on saavuttamattomissa näiden sairaiden suoja-aikojen johdosta. Tai tältä ainakin näyttäisi, ellei muistaisi kirjastolaitoksen olemassaoloa. Tekijän yksinoikeus päättää yksittäisen teoskappaleen levittämisestä päättyy kun se “saatetaan yleisön saataville”, eikä oikeuksien haltijalla ole oikeutta vaatia kirjan poistoa kirjaston kokoelmista tai muutenkaan vetää markkinoilta. Samoin käytettyjen kirjojen myyntiä ei nykyisen lain mukaan voi kieltää. Vuokraamiseen tosin tarvitsee luvan, tästä onkin Suomessa vireillä juttu kirjojen vuokranvälityspalvelun (huom ei kirjojen vuokrauspalvelun) BookaBookan ja oikeudenhaltijoiden välillä. Tapaus on esimerkki siitä että jyrkät tekijänoikeudet antavat oikeudenhaltijoille aseet sekä itse teosten että omien business-malliensa suojeluun.

Julkaistun kulttuuriperinnön kannalta on kaksi erityisen kiusallista aineistojoukkoa. Toinen ovat teokset, jotka eivät ole yleisesti markkinoilla mutta jotka ovat edelleen tekijänoikeuden alaisia. Käytännössä teokset ovat kaupan hyllyllä tai edes kustantajalta suoraan ostettavissa vain murto-osan siitä ajasta, jonka niiden tekijänoikeussuoja kestää. Niitä ei siis voi ostaa vaikka haluaisi. Toinen kiusallinen joukko ovat ns. orvot teokset, eli teokset, joiden oikeuksien haltijaa ei tiedetä tai ei voida tavoittaa. Varoivaisuusperiaatteen vuoksi niitä ei pidetä saatavilla esim. digitoimalla (paitsi Google Book Search, jolla on paljon rahaa ja paljon lakimiehiä). Orpojen teosten oikeuksien selvittäminen on todella työlästä hommaa, kuulin 2nd LIBER-EBLIDA Workshop on Digitalisation of Library Material in Europe -seminaarissa eurooppalaisilta kollegoilta, että oikeuksien selvittämisen valmistelutyö oli jossain hankkeessa ollut kolme kertaa kalliimpaa kun itse digitointi.

Edelliselle joukolle voisi olla ratkaisuna jonkinlainen menetelmä, jolla oikeudenhaltijoita painostettaisi pitämään tekijänoikeudella suojattuja teoksia markkinoilla. Tarvepainattamisen (print-on-demandin) ja kustantajien suoramyynnin avulla näitä teoksia ei välttämättä tarvitsisi seisottaa kirjakaupoissa viemässä arvokasta hyllytilaa. Voisi olla vaikkapa jonkinlainen progressiivinen haittavero, joka tulisi voimaan kun teosta ei enää saisi avoimilta markkinoilta. Eräänlainen omaisuusvero immateriaalioikeuksille siis. Tai teokset voisivat automaattisesti vapautua tekijänoikeuden piiristä kun niitä ei enää ole kaupasta saatavilla.

Elektronisten aineistoja eivät koske samanlaiset oikeudet kuin painettuja aineistoja, joten kirjastojen aineistonhankinta sillä saralla ei perustu vapauteen, vaan sopimuksiin. Elektronisten aineistojen lisensointi onkin erittäin kuuma peruna kirjastoalalla, erityisesti akateemisissa kirjastoissa jossa niitä käytetään paljon.

Kirjastot toimivat julkaisujen parissa, ja juuri niitähän tekijänoikeudet koskevat.Kulttuuri sinänsä ei muodostu julkaisuista, jotka toki ovat erittäin tärkeinä rakennuspaloina muiden rakennuspalojen joukossa. Sama pätee oppimiseen, opiskeluun ja oppiresursseihin: on muutakin kuin julkaisut. Kuitenkin esim internetissä voidaan miltei kaikki nähdä julkaisuina. Miten on esimerkiksi videostreamin kanssa, sehän ei ole tallenne. Jos lähetän vaikkapa luennolta suoraa videokuvaa internetiin, niin tarkalleenottaen mitä lakia rikon? Varmastikin jollakulla olisi valittamista.

Tekijänikeuksista on aika-ajoin paljonkin puhetta, viimeinen suuri käpinä oli työsuhdeolettamasta, jonka mukaan työsuhteessa tehdyt teokset siirtyisivät oletusarvoisesti työnantajan omaisuudeksi. Nythän näin ei ole. Asiasta voidaan toisin työsopimuksessa, mutta oletusarvoisesti oikeudet ovat tekijällä, eivät tilaajalla. Työsuhdeolettama on suoraan alkuperäisenä tekijänoikeutena pidetyn Annen asetuksen (Statute of Anne, 1709) vastainen. Sehän nimenomaan takasi suojan itse tekijälle. Tekijät protestoivat äänekkäästi olettamaa vastaan.

Tällä kurssilla mietitään avoimuutta ja oppiresursseja. Mitä on avoimuus? Julkaisu on varmasti avoimuutta ja nykyinen (tosin rikkinäinen) tekijänoikeus pyrkii turvaamaan sen, että tekosiaan kannattaa saattaa yleisön saataville menettämättä oikeutta elantoon. Toiset kurssilaiset rohkenevat väittämään, että tekijänoikeus on suorastaan haitta. Itse en menisi aivan näin pitkälle, selvää kuitenkin on että nykyinen tekijänoikeus on sekä hengeltään että kirjaimeltaan huono. Yksi paha ongelma on se, että koko lainsäädäntöprosessi on naurunalaisena ja sen legitimaatio murenee. Ehkä tämä onkin salaliitto, jotta lisensointiin siirtyminen nopeutuisi entisestään.

Omakin organisaationi, eli Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto järjestää opetusta. Kuten koulutuskalenterista selviää, suurin osa asiakkaiden opetuksesta kohdistuu nykyään tietokoneen ja internetin käyttötaitoihin. Opetukseen liittyvää aineistoa löytyy hieman verkosta. Osa materiaalista on vapaasti kopioitavissa, osassa ei ole tätä oikeutta myönnetty. Oletusarvoisestihan kaikki oikeudet pidetetään. Minun ja monen muunkin mielestä julkishallinnon tuotantojen pitäisi olla maksutta koko yhteiskunnan käytettävissä. Näinhän ei nyt ole, pahin tilanne taitaa olla yliopistoissa ja muissa tutkimuslaitoksissa, joissa (yhteiskunnan varoin) tehty tutkimus joudutaan käytännössä lisensoimaan takaisin julkaisijoilta, kovaan hintaan tietenkin.

Europeana Background

The second DL to be evaluated is Europeana.

Europeana is a repository which links media from a number of European organisations. You can search for images, video, sound clips and text across museums, galleries, libraries and digital collections. The current version is a prototype which was launched at the end of 2008 and version 1.0 will be available in 2010. It is important to note that Europeana is separate from The Europeana Library.

Findings

Search

Although a search form is provided, it is not persistent throughout the entire site. If a user navigates to any of the universal links across the top of the site e.g. communities, time-line etc, then the search form disappears. To find the search form again the user must navigate back to the homepage. Currently the only link to the homepage is within the logo which is not immediately obvious. Consequently this does not meet Heuristic 4 or the ISO heuristic which request systems are consistent and follow platform conventions.

Unlike WDL, Europeana does provide an advanced search. A link to the advanced search form is prominently displayed below the search field. The extra fields in the advanced search are toggled to allow users to expand the search form without having to leave the page. This retains consistency, simplifies the navigation and reduces possible disorientation. Providing an advanced search meets Heuristic 7 which (accelerators for experienced users) and ISO heuristic which promotes dialogue suitable to user’s task and skill level.

As mentioned in the evaluation of WDL, Europeana is also guilty of not providing constructive help to users when no search results are returned which conflicts with Heuristic 9: Help users recognise, diagnose and recover from errors and ISO heuristic: Is the dialogue forgiving?

Browse

Similarly to WDL, Europeana have introduced a time-line which is currently in beta testing. Europeana present the time-line as a tag cloud of years and the size of font is directly related to the number of items available. When a user selects a year, a carousel of images appears which the user can select or scroll horizontally through. The time-line is not currently the default search method and as a result is not featured on the homepage. However, a carousel of images is presented on the homepage below the search form. The time-line was evaluated to investigate how intuitive the navigation system is to operate and how effective this system is at assisting browsed searching.

The implementation of the time-line in Europeana makes browsing less efficient than other systems available. When a user selects a year from the word cloud to browse the time-line, a search form is provided to the left of the time-line. it is not immediately noticeable and its distance from the time-line and the use of boxes to section off the interactive element, users could consider the search form to be separate. Additionally, searching through results without using the search form will take longer to navigate. As results are paginated, users must navigate through each page individually in addition to using the carousel which could be time consuming. There is currently no other way of narrowing results. Consequently users have limited control over the presentation and navigation of results using the time-line system meaning that it does not meet Heuristic 3: User control and freedom and the ISO heuristics: Controllability and Suitability for learning.

Word clouds don’t behave consistently and consequently results lose their usefulness. Although the word cloud presents results relative to the size of text, this does not always help to inform users effectively. For example, if a search is conducted using the search form, the word cloud changes (see image). Now all the years are uniform in size. No information is provided to inform users of the number of results for each year meaning that it does not meet Heuristic 1: Visibility of system status or ISO Heuristic: Self-descriptiveness.

User driven navigation

This is something which has largely been popularised through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. User driven navigation aggregates users behaviour and actions on a site. It gives users insight into what other users are doing. Europeana has introduced a section on the homepage similar to this which provides details of topics users have searched for. ‘People are currently thinking about’ (image below) is an alternative way to browse the DL and one which is entirely dependent on the user. It is not clear if the information reflects the most recent searches or the most popular searches but is a good example of a DL adopting an idea from social networking sites and adapting it to provide an additional service to users. This satisfies the ISO Heuristic which requests that users can control the pace and sequence of interaction.

Faceted navigation

Faceted navigation is used to help users frame their choices by allowing them to reduce the number of possible matches to their search. Europeana is one of three DLs evaluated which provided this type of navigation. The faceted navigation was evaluated to understand how useful this system is and identify any potential usability issues such as labelling, disorientation and user control.

Labels and categories used should be understandable to users and relevant to the DL. Europeana have a section where users can narrow their results by language. However, each label is abbreviated to two letters making them difficult to distinguish. Abbreviated words and unfamiliar terms should be avoided to conform with Heuristic 2: Match between the system and the real world.

Clear visual feedback within the faceted navigation helps orientate users. When using the faceted navigation, the users selections do not reset the search unexpectedly instead allowing users to select more than one category and de-select categories to widen a search if desired. This provides users with a high level of control as recommended in Heuristic 3: User control and freedom.

Use of pagination in addition to faceted navigation. Providing both allows users to reduce the number of results from an initial search, reducing time spend navigating pages of results in order to find what they are looking for (Heuristic 3).

Personalisation and customisation

Europeana provide a section called ‘My Europeana’ where registered users can save searches, items and add tags to items so that they can be grouped together by keywords. User must first register. Registration is streamlined and only requests the users email address. Often long registration forms requesting unnecessary personal information can be off-putting to users so this form encourages users to join.

However ‘Tagging’ items is a relatively unfamiliar term not used extensively in DLs and as a result it is likely to confuse some users. Additionally, once a user creates and submits their tag, there is no feedback instructing the user on how to find the tag. Although the user is informed that their action has been successful, a link to their tags would help users find them more easily. In this situation the status of the action is provided but its visibility within the site is less straightforward which conflicts with the ISO standard relating to self-descriptiveness.

Voici le nouveau site dédié aux trésors artistiques et culturels de nos pays voisins. Ce portail, lancé par l’Union Européenne nous permet à nous, internautes, d’accéder facilement à des millions d’images, textes, films ou bandes-son numérisées.

Outre son interface simple et efficace qui rappelle Google Books, Europeana donne accès en 1 clic aux sites des 43 bibliothèques nationales européennes et à leurs documents. De quoi réduire notre temps de recherche sur la Toile, d’élargir notre horizon de culture et de satisfaire notre curiosité !

On peut ainsi passer d’Oscar Wilde à Marcel Proust, de Léonard de Vinci à Picasso, écouter des enregistrements des oeuvres de Bach ou Mozart ou visionner des vidéos d’archives telles que la chute du mur de Berlin, la crise de Mai 68 ou encore les obsèques de Coluche.

Autre bonne nouvelle, ce site enrichit régulièrement ses collections. En effet, l’objectif stratégique de la Commission est de disposer de 10 millions d’objets accessibles en 2010, chiffre qui sera multiplié les années suivantes.

Sûr que ce gigantesque projet va ouvrir une nouvelle voie à la diversité culturelle !

2nd LIBER-EBLIDA Workshop on Digitisation of Library Material in Europe

I just returned from The Hague, where the 2nd LIBER-EBLIDA Workshop on Digitisation of Library Material in Europe was held.

The previous workshop (which i didn’t attend) was in Copenhagen 2007 and this event seems to stabilize as a biennale. See Building the European Digital Library: calls for greater cooperation and Paul Ayris’ article LIBER-EBLIDA Digitisation Workshop in LIBER Quarterly vol 18 (2008) no 1. Personally i regret my failure to properly dig into the archives of LIBER Quarterly before the event. I spent the weekend in Netherlands’ surf-paradise (!!?) Scheveningen and might have as well invested more time reading available background material. On the other hand i was busy visiting Rotterdam, the museum of absolutely stunning M. C. Escher in Den Haag, hanging out with some local squatters before their demo, bumping most randomly to a finnish lad Joel i’ve met in Helsinki a few times and also visiting the public library of The Hague (blogged some observations in finnish).

The LIBER+EBLIDA event itself was most interesting, though i must say i wished for some more dynamic methods of workshopping. In Copenhagen LIBER composed a suite of recommendations and they were revised in The Hague and will be available in the near future. This was the workshopping-part. Most of the time was spent on information dissemination (read: sitting and listening to powerpoint presentations).

Most of the discussion around digitalisation is rather slow, not an awful a lot of happens in a few years time and topics come and go. Personally i think Google and other commercial players bring very welcome dynamics to the arena. We did get to see some implementations too, not just reminders on “how we should convince politicians that the digitalisation project is of utmost importance and should be funded with public money”. Well, that was repeated quite a few times.

In general the topics were what you’d except; digitalisation, orphan works, Europeana, metadata standards, identifiers, several cases of digitalisation and online publishing materials, funding, open access, some healthy grudge against Google digitalisation efforts and the unresolved problems of intellectual property rights and copyright.

Some of my favourite topics were the LIFE tool for evaluating the cost of digital objects over their lifetime, URN-identifiers and the apparent importance of Europeana as a cooperation project in Europe.

When participants know each other and the subject very well the atmosphere is relaxed and warm, and this was the case (in my opinion anyhow) in The Hague too.

A few people were on Twitter with hashtag #liber but because Twitter is annoying and unpersistant and we didn’t use a more unique tag, that URL will be useless very soon. Nothing particular happened on Twitter, but some of the tweets of interest were read aloud at the venue. I would assume the presentation graphics will be available through the LIBER website, and perhaps audio recordings will be published. Keep an eye on LIBER Quarterly also.

Thanks to LIBER and EBLIDA for arranging the event, and thanks to Koninglige Bibliotheek for a) great acoustics and b) the wifi that i (and surely other people) asked for.

Erasmus prize for Europeana

Europeana is awarded with the Erasmus Award for Networking Europe by the European Society for Education and Communication (ESEC). Out of 230 applications 62 nominations were selected and only 3 were awarded. All 62 nominees were awarded with the Erasmus Seal of Approval for excellent quality and educational value.

The jury has chosen Europeana because of:

“The leading idea of Europeana is the strong conviction that European countries can be connected by realizing in several languages more access to the European cultural heritage –not only for scientists, but also for every general citizen.
If we see Europeana as a treasure store house, the user can be seen as a treasure digger who is discovering a virtual world of culture that seems to be without borders.”

Max Kaiser from the National Library of Austria and co-ordinator of EuropeanaConnect attended the awards ceremony and delivered an acceptance speech on behalf of Europeana.

As a contributor to Europeana, the Video Active consortium is very pleased with the appreciation of the ESEC for Europeana.

Az europeana.eu címen található meg az Európai Unió digitális multimédia-könyvtára, ahol több mint 4,6 millió könyv, fénykép, festmény, hagfelvétel, film található meg.

Tavaly novemberi indulásakor annyi látogatója volt, hogy összeomlott a rendszer, és hetekbe telt, amíg a megfelelő szintre tudták emelni a kapacításását.

Brüsszel partnereke keres a könyvtár növelésére. Eddig tárgyaltak a google-val, akik egyelőre csak kis százalékát biztosítják a közzétett médiának. A legnagyobb részt Franciaország vállalta magára, aki a digitalizált anyagok 47 százalékát biztosítja. Utána jönnek a németek 15 százalékkel. Románia 0,3 százalékot, míg Magyarország alig 0,1 százalékot biztosít.

A jövő év végére szeretnék, ha a gyüjtemény elérné a 10 milliót. Ennek érdekében korszerűsíteni és egyesíteni szeretnék a tagországok törvénykezését, a a szerzői jogok tiszteletben tartásának érdekében.

Let’s ask this: Just what do museum website users want?

Actually, before we do that, the biggest question is “who is our audience?”.

Wait. Before we do that, let’s assume that – what – 70-80% of museum website users want to find out some logistical stuff: “what’s on? how do I get there? how much is it?”. Let’s assume that this bit is solved with a page or two of dull but useful information. Let’s ignore the 70-80%. They’re boring. There’s only so much you can do with a map and some opening times, right?

Now let’s consider the other stuff – the content – the collections, the exhibition stories, the richness. Just who are these people, what do they want, and where do they come from?

Determining audiences for museum websites is a slippery game which generally involves phrases like “lifelong learners” (everyone) or “educators” (teachers, parents, children – oh wait, everyone) or just “everyone”.

I’m being slightly mean, and actually the definitions are a little bit better than that, but still there is an underlying tension which is something to do with deeper questions about success, publicity, depth of resources, marketing, integrity – and that horrible, horrible phrase which frequently does the rounds: dumbing down.

When a curator oversees a website, for instance, he or she often fights the dumbing down thing tooth and nail. Curators are about depth, about academic rigour and cleverness. Curators aren’t (often) about publicity, traffic, sound-bites and volume. This is fine, and museums should be about quality and richness and integrity. If it wasn’t for this, they wouldn’t be the respected institutions that they have become.

The problem is that museums online want (and increasingly need) to be mainstream, too. We see Flickr and Facebook and Google and viral marketing and Twitter and….[etc] and, frankly, we want some ‘o’ that. And the tension there becomes more intense. Can you build traffic and volume and virality online and still manage to “not be dumb”? Can these deep, rich, academically sound experiences also be mainstream? Is – getting to the crux of the question – a mainstream user shallow or deep?

One of the big, enduring discussions, for example, is about how Google provides search into museum collections. Museum people tend to twitch if you suggest they should focus on exposing their collections sites to SEO best principles and forget the in-house search (or even just stick their stuff on Wikipedia and forget the whole in-house piece altogether), because they say that Google doesn’t provide the granularity that is required. For some researchers – those who want to find out the year an object was invented or the country of origin, for example – this lack of granularity is indeed a problem. For many others – those who just want a picture of any old steam engine for their desktop or wherever – it isn’t.

Balancing this requirement / audience / success equation is in itself a game. The best solution (do both) is clearly the answer, but many institutions fail to realise this, tending to focus on arcane in-house terms and interfaces rather than trying to find ways of building SEO via common content entrance points like Google. It becomes a user interface question, yes, but it is also about much bigger-picture strategic issues about success.

What each museum needs to decide is what this success looks like. And if – as is usually the case – success is about museums becoming more used, more embedded in people’s lives, more human – then success is, frankly, about Google. There, I said it. Where else does anyone begin a search for – well, anything? Do we really think that people come to museums to begin their search? Really?

So success – in the case of Europeana, for example – seems to me to be about asking the question: “can I find Europeana stuff on Google?”, not “can I find Europeana stuff on Europeana?”. When I’m looking for information on Leopold Mozart, I’m not – ever – going to start my search on one of our individual museum sites or any of the aggregators, federators or whotsitators that have been developed, including Europeana. I’m going to Google. Firstly, because I clearly don’t know who knows stuff on Mozart’s father and I can’t go there if I don’t have that specialised bit of information yet (and Google (currently) provides the single best starting point for my query); but secondly, because Google is there as my homepage, a hook in my Chrome browser search bar and as a known entity in my consciousness. Why would I start my search looking at detail in a single book when I’ve got access to general information about the whole library?

This is grandmother / eggs for many people working in museums, but I’m not sure it is as obvious to the big projects we’ve seen emerging from the museum sector. For some of these projects, specialised audiences are their success, in which case local approaches do work better. But for the majority, success is increasingly about making enough SEO noise for more general audiences.

And is this “dumbing down”? Yes, I suspect it probably is.

Bibliothèques numériques : et l'usager ?

On va encore dire que je suis méchant ou sarcastique mais je viens d’écouter – avec un peu de retard, c’est l’avantage de l’écoute à la carte – l’émission Question d’éthique, retransmise le lundi sur France Culture.

L’émission portant sur le thème “Une bibliothèque universelle numérique, à quel prix ?”, la présentatrice, Monique Canto-Sperber, y recevait Michel Bernard, professeur à Paris III, et – ô surprise et originalité de nos médias – Jean-Noël Jeanneney.

~~La présence de M. Jeanneney, dont personne ne connaît les thèses, a été rafraîchissante et sa pensée a dû étonner plus d’un auditeur~~.

Les personnes intéressées auront sans aucun doute peu appris mais l’émission a au moins eu l’intérêt de mettre les choses au clair en orientant la discussion autour des quelques grandes problématiques. Surtout, elle a permis de mettre en valeur une figure centrale mais un peu oubliée dans les débats politiques actuels : l’usager.

Car dans cette émission, les rôles étaient (involontairement, pour partie) bien distribués : Michel Bernard (MB) jouait le rôle de la personne raisonnable connaissant les dangers de Google mais reconnaissant ses avantages en tant que lecteur. C’est lui qui m’a intéressé.
Face à lui, des personnes dont la partition était déjà écrite et qui permettaient donc de mettre le premier en valeur : Jean-Noël Jeanneney (JNJ), nuancé et intelligent, mais revenant toujours à ses vieilles lunes et justifiant son action en tant que président de la BnF ; et Monique Canto-Sperber (MCS), enfin, jouant le rôle de la caricature de Jeanneney (c’est à dire du Jeanneney vu par une certaine presse qui n’a pas lu son livre). Il faut avouer que c’est reposant : pas de surprise dans ce que vont dire les intervenants, tout se déroule comme au théâtre.
Finalement, le plus drôle était au début, quand on s’est rendu compte que, pour une émission sur l’éthique, la présentatrice invitait un autre producteur de France Culture, qui lui-même ne semblait pas choqué par ces petits arrangements entre amis. Peut-être suis-je le seul choqué de ces pratiques. Je suis resté naïf et crois à la vertu. La preuve, je suis fonctionnaire.

*Egalité d’accès contre fracture numérique

MB, spécialiste de l’usage de l’informatique dans la recherche littéraire, souligne l’importance des bibliothèques numériques pour l’accès au savoir. Sans aller jusqu’aux pays du Sud, comme il l’a fait, rappelons qu’il est impossible à un provincial de rédiger une thèse sans venir à plusieurs reprises à Paris, ce qui coûte fort cher.

La thèse opposée a été développée avec une radicalité rare, ce qui l’a rendue plus plaisante que convaincante. Avec la meilleure foi du monde, MCS, voulant parler de la facticité de cette mise à disposition pour un public qui n’en a pas l’usage et du risque de “fracture numérique”, a réutilisé les arguments du XIXe siècle sur les risques de la lecture de romans pour le peuple et les femmes. Parlant d’abord des dangers de l’”accès sans formation préalable”, elle a craint que “tout le monde [puisse] être en contact avec le contenu de savoirs hérités qui parvenaient [auparavant] à des personnes qui s’étaient préparées à cela”. Avant de conclure par une question essentielle “Ne voyez-vous pas une forme de danger pour la culture universelle ?”

JNJ s’est heureusement employé à recoller les morceaux avec son concept central (et qui doit nous faire peur !) : le vrac. Il a alors souligné qu’il fallait par dessus tout former les gens (dès l’école) à utiliser ces nouveaux outils pour n’être pas enseveli sous ces masses d’information, ce qui est de bon sens.

*Ranger en piles ou chercher dans le tas

Pour éviter le vrac, JNJ veut une information sous la forme d’une arborescence (et non tout sur le même plan) et une validation des contenus.

On est alors tenté d’aller voir dans Europeana ce qu’il en est. Je tape quelque chose qui me donnera beaucoup de résultats – au hasard “Louis XIV” – et je restreins aux textes. Sur les 12 résultats de la première page, qu’obtiens-je ? 8 études variées publiées au XIXe siècles (et donc largement obsolètes), une “declaration du roy contre les corsaires” de 1691 (document d’époque, mais anecdotique), et trois autres documents du même intérêt.
C’est peut-être une vieille technique de beaucoup parler pour éviter que l’on aille voir les réalisations mais il ne me semble pas que le classement d’Europeana soit plus significatif ou utile au béotien que celui de Google. Et j’ai beau pouvoir raffiner ma recherche par un système de facettes, cela ne me sera pas d’une grande aide pour sélectionner les ressources les plus pertinentes (surtout quand les années de parution ne sont pas rangées par ordre chronologie (sic)).

MCS prend alors l’exemple (canonique, j’ignore pourquoi) du tremblement de terre de Lisbonne et explique que si l’on cherche des renseignements sur ce dernier dans Google Livres, on obtiendra “tout un tas de publications où il sera peut-être beaucoup plus question du tremblement de terre de Lisbonne mais qui n’en diront rien de véritablement intéressant. Comment celui qui est peu informé, qui n’a pas conduit une sorte de préparation intellectuelle est-il en mesure de traiter tout ce savoir ?” MB souligne à juste titre que le problème est le même dans une bibliothèque où mettre l’usager devant le rayon qui l’intéresse ne suffit pas : dans les deux cas, il faut savoir chercher puis traiter l’information. Ajoutons qu’il existe une méthodologie de la recherche et qu’on va généralement chercher des ressources généralistes avant de chercher des choses plus spécialisées. Je citerais bien l’article de Wikipédia, qui est très correct et donne des références bibliographiques pour aller plus loin, mais je sais que JNJ n’aime guère Wikipédia.

Mais allons plus loin et comparons les résultats de Gallica, Europeana et Google Livres avec “tremblement terre Lisbonne”
*Google : les deux premiers résultats (en affichage limité) sont Les tremblements de terre aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles: la naissance d’un risque‎, très bon essai universitaire publié chez Champ Vallon ; et Le tremblement de terre de Lisbonne chez Odile Jacob, monographie de référence sur cet épisode, longuement analysé.
*Europeana (restreint aux textes) : un article du Guardian sur le refus du Danemark de ratifier le traité de Maastricht (sic) puis des ouvrages des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles sur des séismes à Messine et en Amérique méridionale et à Lesbos (re-sic, le dernier ouvrage n’est pas vraiment documentaire…).
*Gallica : Le guide de voyage “Petit fûté” sur Lisbonne suivi de Les catastrophes célèbres, Mame, 1861.

Là encore, on voit apparaître une contradiction. Cela signifierait qu’on pourrait être intellectuellement d’accord avec JNJ et, pour cette raison même, plutôt utiliser Google Livre que Gallica ? Hmm, voilà qui ne cadre guère avec ce qu’on lit dans les journaux où on répète les arguments de chaque camp sans jamais, apparemment, utiliser les outils dont on parle…

*Une sélection rigoureuse ou tout numériser ?

JNJ et MCS mettent en avant le choix raisonné supposé être celui de la BnF, contrairement à Google qui numérise n’importe quoi.

Là encore, des nuances doivent être apportées. Du côté de la BnF puisque le rapport de l’Inspection des finances dont j’ai récemment parlé contestait les [non-]choix effectués. Du côté de Google également puisqu’il numérisent par bibliothèques entières. Affirmer que leur choix n’est pas pertinent, c’est affirmer que le fonds de la Bodleian n’est pas cohérent, ce qui n’a pas vraiment de sens.

Le choix effectué, il faut hiérarchiser l’information. JNJ conteste les choix de Google, selon lui fondés sur la recherche de l’audimat. Il donne alors l’exemple de Stendhal, convaincu de n’être lu et compris qu’en 1936 et affirme que Google l’aurait mal classé [sous-entendu : "quelle bande d'idiots, il est pourtant évident que Stendhal est un grand écrivain"].

À ce moment comme à d’autre, on a la désagréable impression que JNJ parle de classement des ouvrages dans le vide, comme si ce classement ne dépendait pas d’une recherche effectuée par un lecteur. Après, ce qu’il dit de Stendhal est probablement vrai, mais j’incline à penser que la BnF de 1880 aurait également proposé Georges Ohnet ou Emile Augier avant le Grenoblois. D’ailleurs, le simple fait d’avoir été assez clairvoyant pour récupérer ses archives suffit à sauver la mémoire de l’illustre Hyacinthe Gariel. Mais le fait même qu’il pose la question en ces termes amène à s’interroger sur les idées de JNJ en matière de hiérarchie de l’information : le rang doit-il dépendre de la qualité de l’oeuvre ? Selons quels critères ? Déterminés par qui ?

*L’impérialisme culturel américain

La discussion roule alors sur la diversité culturelle et notamment des langues utilisées. JNJ revient sur les exemples donnés dans son livre sur les poésies de Victor Hugo disponibles uniquement en traduction anglaise et sur la vision tronquée car anglaise de la Révolution française. Outre qu’il précise que ces défauts qui existaient au début du projet ont été largement corrigés depuis, MB souligne le paradoxe qu’il y a à se plaindre que la culture française ne soit pas assez présente dans Google livres tout en faisant pression pour éviter que les fonds des bibliothèques françaises y soient intégrés.

*Oeuvres sous droit, oeuvres orphelines

Même si nous sortons des questions patrimoniales, cette partie de la discussion est révélatrice de la vision de chacun des interlocuteurs.
MCS parle de “l’orgueil” de Google et de la désinvolture avec laquelle il s’est placé en dehors du droit d’auteur : elle parle du point de vue de l’éditeur avec comme valeur première le respect du droit d’auteur. MB acquiesce mais fait remarquer que la désinvolture existe également chez les “éditeurs vis-à-vis de cette masse de textes sur lesquels il ont posé un veto, qui n’est plus accessible parce qu’ils ne veulent plus la publier, parce qu’ils sont supposés n’être plus suffisamment rentables, dont les auteurs eux-mêmes ne peuvent rien faire car ils ont passé des accords avec les éditeurs”. C’est à dire qu’il parle du point de vue du lecteur, avec comme valeur première la diffusion et l’accès au savoir. Et il souligne que si Google est en effet une entreprise commerciale qui cherche le profit, c’est également le cas des éditeurs français, qui acceptent de rendre inaccessibles des ouvrages dont ils détiennent les droits en ne prenant en compte que leurs intérêts propres et non ceux du public.

La position de MB est intéressante car elle est très rarement prise en compte alors qu’elle est centrale. Il convient de la plupart des critiques faites à Google, des risques de monopole, etc. Mais il est chercheur et il a juste besoin de livres.
Intellectuellement, il est d’accord avec JNJ mais, en tant qu’usager, il doit être pragmatique. “Comme consommateur, je préfèrerais utiliser Quaero mais Google est meilleur”, dit-il.
Or, dans la plupart des médias, la question n’est abordée que d’un point de vue éthique, politique, stratégique… en oubliant que ces sites sont avant tout des outils pour des gens qui cherchent des livres. Et qu’il arrive un moment où, même si on craint la menace que représente Google, on ira sur Google Livres parce que le livre dont on a besoin est sur Google Livre.

Seule solution pour sortir de cette aporie : que l’Europe y mette les moyens. Tout le monde a souligné le faible budget consacré à la numérisation en France, alors que les enjeux sont gigantesques pour des dizaines d’années. Le budget annuel est inférieur au prix d’un unique avion Rafale… Eh oui.

You can now access books, journals, films, maps etc from across Europe via the EU’s online library, Europeana. It’s a great idea but it’s not all plain sailing: web copyright rules are not the same in all EU countries, there are issues about paying for items that are still under copyright and should there be a minimum standard for content? Europeana was launched on 20 November, 2008. It is a multi-lingual online collection of millions of digitised books, journals, films, maps, photographs and music from European museums, libraries, archives and multi-media collections. It is accessible to every citizen with an internet connection. It also preserves the items for future generations.

Europeana’s collection has doubled since its launch and there are now more than 4.6 million items. The aim is to have 10 million digitised objects by 2010 and the European Commission has launched a public consultation about the future challenges, which ends 15 November, to get the views of libraries, rights holders, IT companies and consumer organisation, as well as the European Parliament.

Europeana is a great project, but as ever it needs funding. Although a similar scheme is run in the United States by Google, the European Parliament Culture Committee, who discussed Europeana yesterday, is wary of such commercial involvement. Instead we are hoping for Member State Government help and sponsorship from interested institutions. As far as the scope of Europeana is concerned, the Committee Chair, Doris Pack put it well – we will record works which form the soul of Europe.

I think the soul should be preserved and will play my part in taking this project forward.

Numa iniciativa semelhante à grande biblioteca digital Europeana, o site The European Library oferece acesso aos catálogos e coleções digitalizadas de todas as bibliotecas nacionais do continente europeu.

Além da possibilidade de busca integrada nos catálogos dessas bibliotecas, também é possível acompanhar virtualmente as exposições que cada qual vem conduzindo, além de poder conhecer o interior dessas instituições, por meio de fotos e outras imagens. Para saber mais, basta clicar no país de seu interesse e ter acesso à respectiva biblioteca, devidamente sinalizada no mapa.
