Disclaimer: The sentences are a bit disjointed and the spelling is a bit cocked up in places, but I will go back and do a quick edit after I’ve finished typing like a loon.

Tonight, my friends, I shall attempt a very daring feat. I will attempt to write a commentary on the stupid gay Eurovision song contest and I will also be trying to write a book themed post. Wish me luck, and pray for me.

To completely honest with you, tonight didn’t get off to the best start. I missed the first ten minutes due to camera related problems, and ran downstairs just in time to catch a Russian man jumping through a paper wall while being suspended in mid-air. See that’s what I like about Eurovision; it’s very low-key and laid-back. You probably already know that Terry Wogan has quit in protest over the fact that we came last in 2008, so we have to make do with Graham Norton, who, so far, is doing a good job.

Anyway, I am about ten minutes behind, so I better start talking about the acts. First is Lithuania. It’s ok, a bit dull. Or at least, it was until he set his fucking hand on fire. Quite boring really, but he looked quite cool in his hat.

Ok, now I’m back on schedule. Israel is up now. Oh….oh dear. I know Eurovision isn’t known for its fantastic fashion choices, but I do find the whole transexual-dominatrix look a bit off putting, especially when teamed with shit harmonies and face-stroking. But hey, at least the guy playing the tambourine is enjoying himself. Now they’re playing the bongos and a giant rose is looming in the background. It’s over now, and I have to say despite my complaints it wasn’t that bad.

Now it’s France, with a global superstar that I have never heard of. The camera seemed to be zooming in on a spot over her left shoulder, which left me a bit confused at first, but hey, it’s Eurovision. Ok, I don’t care how many albums this woman has sold, I think she’s shit. At least Israel didn’t look like constipated geriatrics when they sang. On a lighter note, her dress is pretty darn amazing. Oh shit, she’s dancing. Is she drunk? No, just French.

It’s Sweden baby! It’s Malena Ernman, wearing a dress which apparently cost £30,000. Oh great, Opera-Disco! My favourite kind of shit. I have to admit though, this woman has some lungs on her, and her dress is gorgeous. The opera bits of the song are fab, it’s just the shitty inbetween bits that are, well, shit. Ok, now the opera bit is just getting freaky, and the backing dancers have just whipped out some masks. And now it’s over, and I have to say she is a good singer, she just had shit backing dancers. Since when do Opera singers have backing dancers, anyhow?

Now it’s Croatia. Oh dear God, it’s a midget in a jumpsuit wearing riding boots, swaying his hips while crooning “Hej draga! Hej draga!” Also, why is he singing the word Tena? I’ve got a translation sing-along up on the BBC, and it doesn’t even mean anything. Is he sponsored by Tena lady? While I was musing on the use of the word Tena, a woman in beautiful white dress came out and made some meowing noises. So, in the end, the song turned out kinda fab.

Portugal are up next, with a band called Flor-De-Lis. Ok, a woman who is actually a good singer, that’s a good start. Oh dear is that…is that an accordian? My blessed uncle it is! I officially love Portugal. With quotability like “I’m the sun in the naked snow,” how could I not love this wonderful country? Oh shit, that’s a ukelele! Oh Portugal, marry me, I want to have your babies. The would be mad as hatters, naturally, but boy, would they rock the accordian. Well, I know who’s got my vote so far!

Iceland are about to storm the stage, and I for one can’t wait. That last song has left me in an optimistic mood. Ok, so this girl is good…it’s standard Eurovison fare, but it ain’t half bad. The only problem is her monstrosity of a dress and her backing singers, whose dresses don’t flatter their rather, ahem, heavy physique. Oh, how sad. That song wasn’t funny enough to make fun of, and now it’s over.

Greece are abou to showcase their gymnastic skills on stage, so let’s pray for the safety of everyone in the stadium. Oh, he is bringing sexyback, what with his pelvic thrusts, all white outfit, sperm-count-reducing jeans and unnatuarally tanned face. Well, this man doesn’t do things by halves, I’ll give him that. Ok, now it’s over, and I can breathe without fear of fainting due to the overwhelming SEXAAY.

Armenia are up now. Oh dear, this costume is apparently the National Costume of Armenia. I’m not sure if the skirt being split up to the upper thigh is Armenian tradition, unless it’s a country well known for its hookers. Which it might be, for all I know. I have to admit that my knowledge of Armenia is severely limited. Notice I haven’t mentioned the singing? That’s because it’s shit.

Russia, the host country, are taking to the stage now. I await with baited breath. Great, she’s singing in Russian, or some language like that. By gum, but this woman is a bad singer. I know I’ve said that about everyone, but I was only saying that because I was trying to find fault, mostly because I’m still resentful about last year, but this woman is shit. A big deal is being made of the fact that there is a computer generated image of the singer growing old behind the actual woman, but I do fail to see what this has to do with the songs subject, which is about mothers. A nice little touch was that the old woman on the sreen started crying when she murdered the song. Nice.

Here we are with Azerbaijan. Oh God, the sing along for this is hilarious. Here’s an little taster:

That is a genuine quote. I want Azerbaijan to win just for that. Oh, I was so busy getting excited about the song quote that I didn’t realise what the backing dancers are wearing. I can’t describe it, that’s how terrible and weird and wrong it is. Oh, and the female singer just flashed her underwear. And it was totally on purpose. That ain’t gonna win votes round here.

And here we are with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Wow, that is a pain to type. The act so far seems to consist of a blonde man singing and some poeple banging drums behind him. After so many songs they all start to sound the same, and this one is no exception. It’s not bad, but it’s not amazing either. To be honest it’s a bit boring. I am so very disappointed. I hope one of them bursts into fire soon or something. Ah yes, the climax of the song! The fire starting shall begin! Oh no, wait, all they did was hold up a red flag. Le yawn. Oh wait, that’s French. Oh no, it’s not even French.

Now, it’s an ad break, but as we are watching on the beeb, we are being treated to an exclusive video of some Russian people miming badly to songs on the street. Russia is fucking weird.

Moldova are gracing the stage now with their song Whore In Moldova. Or something similar, anyway. Ok, I think this just became the winner of the award for best subtitles. Some highlights: “Ra! Ra!”
“When you love, it fills you”
“Ra, he hey, he hey.”
Plus, they have mad native dances and a slightly tarty looking version of the national costume. Oh Moldova, you dark horse, you! Also, “When you love, it fills you” has to be my favourite slightly dirty sound of lyric all time. Brava.

Malta are up now, and I am a big fan of Malta, so I do hope they do well. They are the only country that gave us 12 points in 2007 when we had Scooch representing us, God bless their collective cotten socks. Only problem is, their singer is a bit of a heifer. But that is irrevelent, because she is a fab singer, and she keeps throwing her arms open wide, which in Eurovison speak means “I am full of emotion and although I do not speak English I can express the full breadth and depth of my emotion by using my arms.” If only she didn’t have bingo wings, it would be really effective.

Estonia is next, so I shall ignore my screaming bladder and struggle through. Actually, fuck it, I’m not wetting myself to watch Urban Symphony. They’re not that good. No one is.
Ok, so I have returned from the bathroom, and I actually have to admit that Urban Symphony were very good. I can’t even think of anything snarky to say.

Denmark are storming the stage now, with a song written by Ronan Keating, performed by a Ronan Keating tribute act. That dirty traitor. It’s actually kind of shocking how much like Ronan Keating this man is. He’s even wearing the standard Keating uniform; jeans, white top and waistcoat. But still, the fact that this is a Danish man singing like an Irish traitor doesn’t detract from the fact that he is a good singer and that this is a good, albeit very Ronan Keating-y, song.

Germany are up now, and I am looking forward to this, as Dita Von Teese, who I have a slight girl crush on, is featured in this song. And she doesn’t fail to disappoint; her outfit is fab. So fab in fact, that I only just noticed that the male singer is wearing sequined leggings. I know I haven’t really mentioned the music that much so far, but I have to confess that I love this song. It’s very retro and funky. And Dita Von Reese has the most amazing netting over her face. I want her fascinator. Her waist is freakishly small, but that doesn’t detract from her awesomeness.

Turkey have arrived on stage, with, suprise suprise, a belly dancing theme. Revolutionary. There honestly isn’t much to say about this song, The outfits are tarty, the song is forgettable and there is a random man with a green shirt dancing with the female backing dancers, who are all decked out in red belly dancing costumes. Oh, now a man with a green skirt has arrived on stage. How delightfully odd.

Albania are up next, and Graham Norton is going on about how odd it is, so I am looking forward to this. Fuck, he wasn’t lying, there’s a blue lycra sequin man rolling about on stage and two men dressed as Frankenstein doing the worm in the foreground. And this, my friends, is why I love Eurovision. The sheer madness brings me immense joy and gives me a warm fuzzy sensastion. The singing is pretty, um, unique, but hey! There’s a blue man and two Frankensteins on the stage, so I couldn’t give a shit about the singing. And now it’s over and I am filled with an overwhelming sadness.

Norway is up next, and this is the bookies favourite, so my claws are out and at the ready. Fuck Alexander whathisname, I don’t care if you have a violin and men dancing Native Dances while dressed in suspenders. Yes, I know that this act has everything I love in a Euroviosn act; an endearing and adorable singer, a violin, and acrobatics, but the minute they declared you favourite to win Norway, I closed my heart against you. I don’t care how adorable you look playing that violin, I will not be swayed. Oh, but he is pretty darn sexy. But I’m not gonna vote for you, adorable violin man.

Dull talking time, we’re up after two more acts. I’m scared.

Ukraine are coming up on stage, with someone called Svetlana. Honest to God, I thought that was a made up name until right now. Oh dear, Svetlana seems to have kidnapped the Gladiators, and now she’s forcing them to dance in giant hamster cages. How odd. I have to say, despite myself, I am enjoying this song. It’s not the best song ever, but as there’s a woman called Svetlana singing “You are sexy BOM,” while gyrating on top of Wolf (of Gladiators fame), I am obligated to love this song.

Romania are up now, and after that it’s us! Terror. But now, let’s focus on this shit. Boy, those costimes look shit. I think I wore something similar to a fancy dress competition when I was six. The main woman isn’t even singing the song, it’s some other girl dressed in blue stood in the corner. Why the wouldn’t they let her take center stage? Is she deformed? I feel really sorry for her, standing in the back all alone.

Oh God, it’s the United Kingdom. Cue terror. This is the song that Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote, and he has decided to accompany her on stage to play the piano. If only he didn’t look like his face was melting. Ok, I may be biased, but I think she is an amazing singer. As long as the camera doesn’t focus on Andrew Lloyd Webber too much, she should be fine. Violin man just whacked her in the face, but I don’t think anyone noticed. I’m also slightly in love with her sequined microphone. She just took that high note and made it her bitch. Go Jade! The audience seem to be loving it, and I think it was fab. Maybe, just maybe, we won’t come last this year.

Finland are here now, with a dance track. I can’t fucking stand this type of music. So I’m just gonna try and block it out and think of better things. I have to comment on the muscular fire people in the background though, they are making the whole thing slightly more bearable. Also, I think the three female singers are wearing amazing dresses, quite glitzy and glam, but not too OTT. Oh, spoke too soon, they just set the stage on fire. God bless Finland.

Spain are up next, and this is the last song. I’m not gonna lie to you, I just want to get this song over and get straight to the voting. It’s typical Eurovision fare:
“Come on and take me,
Come on and shake me”
That’s the only problem with suggestive song lyrics in Eurivision. You’re never quite sure if they’re meant to be dirty, or if something just got lost in translation. The singer just vanished and re-appeared, and I know I’m meant to say that it’s amazing, but to be honest, after the fire people, everything seems distinctly underwhelming.

And now the singing is over, and the voting will soon begin. I’m gonna take a hiatus and come back when the results are being announced. Oh, holy shit, some astronauts are talking. Souldn’t they be doing science-y things insted of presenting Eurovison? No wonder we’ve not reached Mars yet.

Moskau, Moskau – Russland ist ein schönes Land und Wien, Wien lieben Maya und Chloe eh – wegen des Schmähs, der Reparaturseidl und überhaupt!

Warum ich das sage? Weil heute der schwule Mann beziehungsweise die Trash-Queen in mir völlig hin- und hergerissen ist, in welche der beiden Städte er/sie virtuell reisen soll. Schließlich finden die beide Großereignisse der TV-Saison, die diesen Maya-Persönlichkeitsanteil überhaupt entstehen ließen, heute statt:

Wenn es glitzert, glänzt, funkelt und quietscht und vor lauter Windmaschinen, Glitterregen, sülzigen Streichern und eingeölten Tänzern kein Halten mehr gibt – dann ist wieder Grand Prix …äääh Verzeihung: Eurovision Song Contest angesagt.

Für mich der queere TV-Pflichttermin des Jahres, wenn Tatort der Sonntagsbraten ist, ist Eurovision die Weihnachtsgans des Fernsehprogramms, nichts und niemand konnte mich jemals stoppen mir dieses Event reinzuziehen, seit ich denken kann. Es ist einfach zu abgefahren.

Ein Abend voller Trash-Überschuss und Fremdscham, bei dem mir stets ganz aristotelisch zumute wird: hier wird das Höchste erniedrigt und das Niedrigste erhöht, phobos und eleos (Schrecken und Jammer) jagen mir einen Schauer nach dem anderen über den Rücken – nur ob mir und dem größten Teil der Zuschauergemeinde dabei tatsächlich eine Reinigung von den Affekten gelingt, halte ich für fragwürdig. Ich denke es ergibt sich vor allem eine Menge Lästerstoff für die nächsten Wochen.

Keine Frage also, ich freue mich auf diese absurden Lieder und die noch absurderen Sänger, die übertroffen werden von völlig abwegigen kitschigen überladenen Bühnenoutfits und -performances – ein Wahnsinn!

Und nach den Auftritten folgt das allerbeste und unglaublichste – eine langwierige und häufig unfreiwillig komische Punktevergabe aus allen teilnehmenden Ländern, bei denen alle Nationen von ihren Nachbarn Punkte zugeschustert bekommen, nur Deutschland nicht!

Wobei man natürlich gespannt sein darf, was dieses Jahr passiert. Fest steht, dass es nach der “Blamage von Belgrad”  im letzten Jahr nicht tiefer gehen kann. Zur Erinnerung, die No Angels holten den allerletzten Platz:

Musikalisch ist vom deutschen Beitrag auch diesmal nicht viel zu halten.

Aber weil das mit der Musik beim Contest schon lange nicht mehr im Vordergrund steht und die Jungs das wohl auch selber wissen, haben sie sich die zauberhafte Dita von Teese ins Champagnerglas geholt – und darauf freue ich mich jetzt schon. Sie wird wahrscheinlich die Eurovisions-Einschaltquoten im Bereich der männlichen heterosexuellen Bevölkerung in bisher ungeahnte Höhen (mindestens Champions-League-Niveau) treiben.

Und was kommt nach der Weihnachtsgans? Die Silvesterparty.

Leider ist diese in diesem Jahr terminlich viel zu nahe an den Grandprix-Schnickschnack gerutscht, wenn ich noch ganz trash-satt und glitzer-trunken auf dem Bett liegen werde um das fette Vieh zu verdauen, kommt schon der Life-Ball mit seinem völlig überladenen Party-Buffet an und überrollt mich. Der findet nämlich ausgerechnet auch heute statt!

Nicht ganz so traditionsreich im Hause von der Spree, doch ebenfalls ein Must-See – nicht nur weil wir ja selber immer wieder feststellen, dass HIV und Aids Themen sind, die ständig den Kampf um vordere Aufmerksamkeitsplätze verlieren, sondern weil diese Feier des Lebens in ihrer ganzen schrill-glamourösen Aufmachung einfach enormen Spaß macht. Modisch und musikalisch gesehen dürfte es ohnehin die vielversprechendere Veranstaltung sein. Auch wenn zu erwarten ist, dass die nach dem Motto “Let Love Flow” verkleideten Gäste sowie die unvermeidlichen salbungsvoll-betroffenen Reden ähnlich drüber sind wie der Schlager-Wettkampf, werden immerhin Dirk Bach moderieren und Kate Perry auftreten.

Abgesehen davon muss man nach dem Nicht-Boykott der schwulenfeindlichen Russen-Eurovision sowieso einiges fürs Karma tun und da fange ich am besten gleich mit der Unterstützung des weltoffenen und wohltätigen Events an. Ich werde also Partyhopping betreiben.

Hola amigos, como ya habréis visto en televisión el Festival de Eurovisión está a las puertas, será este sábado. En representación de España va a ir Soraya, ex-concursante de OT. Va con muchas ganas y muchísima ilusión, llevará una gran puesta en escena, ya que cuenta mucho. Nos representará con la canción La noche es para mí, donde mezcla el inglés y el castellano.

So Israel, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Armenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Malta, Turkey, Romania and Finland go through. Which means we say goodbye to Montenegro, Czech Republic, Belgium, Belarus, Andorra, Switzerland, Bulgaria and FYR Macedonia.

Sadly this means we’ll never know what delights were to be had in the Czechoslovak Restaurant, West Hampstead for example, never raising to our lips Zabijačková polívka & chléb (Black pudding soup & bread sounds intriguing doesn’t it?). On the plus side with Switzerland and Belgium going out the chocolate and whaffle count drops, and no one will panic and end up in Belgo’s.

The loss of Bulgaria means we won’t be searching London for a bowl of hearty Bob chorba. And finding some Belorussians who could tell us about their cuisine and how the communists tried to completely reinvent it would have made a good read.

El programa de esta noche promete y mucho. Además de las esperadas actuaciones de los chicos, la Gala 1 cuenta con dos invitadas de honor. Alesha Dixon, cantante del ritmo pegadizo The boy does nothing hará levantarnos del sofá y bailar con su último éxito.

 Soraya Arnelas, nuestra representante en Eurovisión, también se subirá a tan sólo 11 días de la final de Moscú. La ex-concursante calentará motores con su temazo eurovisivo ¡La noche es para mí!

Y además de las visitas está la gran incóginita: ¿Quién se quedará en Operación Triunfo? Las respuesta, esta noche.

Ikväll kändes det att det var vår i luften och vi gjorde ett ganska snabbt stav-
gångspass runt den fina fågelsjön Råstasjön och ikväll syntes det att vädret för det var ganska livlig trafik i en blandning av joggare, stavgångare, promenadfolk, hundägare, lite cyklisterch annat löst folk.
På träningsplanen var det full aktivitet med matcher mellan de yngsta tjejerna och det är alltid lika kul att titta några minuter på deras kämpaanda.
Tyvärr har jag inte hört något från Arboga så det kommer imorgon.
Efter en ganska lugn kväll tittade vi på reprisen inför Eurovision Song Contest och det var ju som väntat en ytterst blandad kompott.
Vad tyckte vi då ? För min egen del hade jag en säker jumbo och jag är ledsen för Tjeckiens räkning – det var pinsamt och inte långt därifrån kom Belgiens Elvis-kopia som var nästan lika hemsk. Malena är ju lysande och jag tror på henne med hennes enorma scenpondus, men ingen vet hur Europa reagerar.
Om jag bortser från Malena så hittade jag en klar 5:a i Turkiets bidrag  – Dym tek tek som sjöngs av Hadise och jag tror att vi får höra henne dygnet runt i Turkiet – ev. kanske som vinnare i hela tävlingen. Jag såg mycket av vår egen Alexandra i henne och jag hoppas att vi får en bra låt åt henne  för den här grekiska stilen går hem i en stor del av Europa och det har inte minst Helena P.visat. Turkiet är ju som jag sagt ett härligt semesterland och vi har lärt oss gilla landet och vi höll hårt på Turkiet i fotbolls-EM där de skrällde gång på gång och nu blir det också i Eurovision Song Contest. Well, yeah, that was the plan. But what about the food?

The premise of this project is simple. 25 food bloggers will try to eat the cuisine of all 25 finalists in 25 hours within the confindes of the M25!

Of course the idea of a ‘national cuisine’ is a bit fanciful, with most countries in Europe having many regional specialities. So to make it a little more interesting we’ll try and get as near as we can to the area each artist is from, just for extra kudos.

This project was dreamt up by food journalist Andrew Webb, who woke up one morning and thought it would be a bit of a wheeze. Also on board are top food bloggers, Cheese and biscuits, Helen Graves, and Eat Like a Girl. If you want to get involved email/twitter DM him.

It all kicks off on Friday 15th May, where this blog will act as a hub for the 25 bloggers (or teams of bloggers if we get more), they’ll also be a flickr group for images from each of the restaurants or eateries… stay tuned.

Jade Ewan proved to be a fantastic winner of Song for Europe or whatever it’s called these days, beating a pair of munter twins and an effeminate, forgettable pretty boy in the process.

From the moment Andrew Lloyd Webber brought her into the contest because the other contestants were utter shite, she has stood head and shoulders above the rest.

But can she give Johnny Foreigner a slap and rule over Europe?

It was 1997 when we last won Eurovision, having to rely on a Yank in the process, with the awful Love Shite A Light that sang about “love like a curry” (what, hot?) FFS.

Since then we have had dirge after dirge, our lowest moment being the dross that was Jemini.

Until now.

Jade is a star in the making, and ALW has said he will perform with her on stage at Eurovision if she asks him to. The song is not exactly my cup of tea, but I am not philistine, so I appreciate the ‘craft’ that has gone into it and can understand that it is just the type of tune that could go down a storm.

I really hope ALW performs with Jade, and I hope that it wins Eurovision by a country mile. It deserves to. For the first time in decades we are taking Eurovision seriously, and a win would make the competition more respectable in the UK.

We may mock, but each year we watch it in our millions and scream abuse at the telly when we are screwed. We blame the Balkan states, France, Germany and every other ridiculous European country we can think of. Lets face it, the only time we hear of Estonia is at Eurovision.

But the reality is, our entrants have been S-H-I-T-E.

Until now.

If we don’t emerge victorious from Russia, then we have a every reason to send in the Lancasters and bomb the continent to a pulp.

Preselectiile pentru editia nationala Eurovision 2009 s-au incheiat.

Dupa o zi intreaga in care membrii juriului au ascultat cele peste 200 de piese inscrise anul acesta, Catalin Crisan, Mihai Traistariu, Zoe Alecu, Mitza (Bere Gratis), George Natsis (presedintele juriului), Razvan Popescu (Radio 21), Adi Despot (Vita de Vie), Sanda Cepraga (regizor muzical TVR, Viorel Gavrila, George Popa si Bogdan Miu (Europa FM) au decis care vor fi cele 24 de piese semifinaliste!

Catalin s-a inscris anul acesta in concurs cu o singura piesa, “Stop”, compusa de Eduard Carcota (muzica) si Cristian Hriscu Badea (versuri), cu care s-a si calificat in semifinale.

Catalin si Eduard Carcota s-au cunoscut anul trecut in timpul concursului Eurovision 2008. Timbrul vocal al lui Catalin i-a atras atentia lui Eduard, otiv pentru care acesta s-a decis sa compuna o piesa pentru Eurovision pe care a gandit-o special pentru Catalin. Timp de cateva luni cei doi au lucrat impreuna pentru a ajunge la varianta finala care a si fost inscrisa in concurs.

Cand piesa era aproape finalizata au decis sa incerce sa introduca si o voce feminina; si pentru ca le-a fost destul de greu sa se opreasca asupra unei singure voci, au ales sa foloseasca trei! Asa au intrat in scena si Pepper Girls, semifinalistele celei de-a treia editii Megastar!
