A film I have wanted to be made for such a long time – it was utterly brilliant from start to finish. Beautifully shot, with a plot dealt with the slightest of hands from director Jordan Scott, and an excellent cast headed by the gorgeous and mesmerising Eva Green, who delivers one of the finest performances of her career – and in film this year – as Miss G.

Firstly, as I’ve said time and time before, I LOVE boarding school stories, especially ones with a sinister undercurrent, that play on the isolating surroundings and the abundance of pubescent females full to the brim of jealousy, obsession, desire, curiosity, greed, and so forth. It’s an intoxicating set-up. This film (making a few changes from the book by Sheila Kohler) is set in a rural English boarding school in the 1930s, where all the rich parents send their daughters because, quite frankly, they can’t be bothered parenting them. The girls, led by Di and Penny (identical twins of Pauline and Juliet from Heavenly Creatures to an astonishing degree!), bond together and are united in their love and idolisation of Miss G, one of the teachers at the school, whose vivacious and charismatic personality is so uncharacteristic of the stuffiness of the rest of the staff captivates her pupils into believing they can do whatever they want in life, and have amazing adventures around the globe just like her. With so many of the girls having absent and uncaring mothers, Miss G becomes their only role model, and for some of them the infatuation is more than passing.

Then to break up the comfortable scene, an exotic addition joins the class. Fiamma is from Spain, and although she is the same age as the other girls, she has acquired vast amounts of knowledge and experience as part of a royally blessed family. The girls initially shun her, especially when she shows more style and prowess than they do in her appearance, airs and her athleticism. But it’s this difference that catches the eye of Miss G, and slowly a role reversal forms in the classroom, and the object of desire and approval is no longer for the teacher.

The film starts off slowly, and steadily builds through a series of episodes involving the girls and their jealousy towards Fiamma, and then ultimately towards the climax at the end which is not as violent as Heavenly Creatures, but is thoroughly disturbing and shocking all the same. What is captured brilliantly is the deviance of Miss G, a woman who you believe has done it all, and then you slowly begin to realise how messed up and deluded she is as Fiamma breaks her down. Because the girls adore Miss G, they fail to grasp the truth and they hate Fiamma more for trying to fault Miss G. It’s this turn of events which makes the climax even more deadly and tragic.

The character of Miss G has to be one of the most beautifully unravelled on the big screen (and Eva Green is excellent in executing this). Because she is the spotlight, the person we all desire to be, to go from this to utterly despising her at the end is some accomplishment. The wordless stare between Miss G and Di as events unfold around them at the end is powerful and unnerving, and will leave you chilled to the bone. Excellent acting and direction.

Obviously some of the acting from the younger girls was a bit ropey at times, but the lead two or three are surprisingly polished and give convincing and affecting performances – after looking at their resumes on imdb afterwards I see they are building very promising careers indeed!

Was slightly disappointed by the ending – I thought it seemed a little bit ridiculous compared to what we had seen of their lives before it, and dare I say a little melodramatic which spoiled the subtlety of the film which works really well in building suspense. There are times during the film when you wish they would push things further, but if you’re patient, you’ll be fully rewarded by the end.

With echoes of Heavenly Creatures, resemblance to French film Innocence and hefty doses of Lord of the Flies, Cracks can cast all of these comparisons aside and sit aloft as an impressive, sophisticated and ultimately stirring film, with an engrossing and disturbing story brought to life with a terrific cast and a director to keep your eye on. Go and see it, I think it’s my favourite film of the year, not just the festival.

One of my favorite films of the new millennium, Kingdom of Heaven is an under-appreciated classic, a treasure of a film that was shunned in many circles at the time of its release because of its incongruity and certain character flaws. It faded quickly into the realms of the forgotten, but I always held a flame aloft for the historical epic. I admitted to most of the flaws, albeit begrudgingly, but I still had a weird attraction to it, and until about a year ago, I couldn’t really explain it. Now, before about a year ago, I would have bowed to conventional wisdom that if I could not put my pro-KoH argument in words, than it obviously was not that good of an argument. But, last April or so, I discovered the reason that the movie seemed so off to me, and the source of a lot of anti-KoH arguments, is that the studio edited almost an HOUR out of the theatrical cut! AN HOUR! That’s a lot of info to leave out! Now, with a lot more backing this time compared to March of last year, I can safely say that Kingdom of Heaven IS a good movie, a great movie even. It’s not a perfect movie, but it skirts very flirtatiously with immortality, something I admire in a work of art.

We’re taken to the 12th century, between the Second and Third Crusades. Balian, a lonely blacksmith in France, grieving over the suicide of his wife, finds no solace in his work or his life doomed to obscurity. As fate would have it, however, a knight traveling through the area pops into his life. He claims to be his father, and offers him a choice; he can stay in the sad, empty husk of France during the Middle Ages and continue his life as if nothing had happened, or he can come with him to Jerusalem, where the knight holds court with King Baldwin IV. At first hesitant, Balian joins the group of Crusaders after hearing that perhaps his wife’s soul can be saved from Hell if he absolves her sins in the Holy Land (people believed that suicides were instant fodder for Hell back then, although some STILL do). Thus begins a journey of the self through the world of the Dark Ages as Balian travels from his tiny, myopic Medieval world all the way to the center of the world’s tumult, Jerusalem, where a new dispute is broiling beneath the surface of the Second Crusade’s short-lived peace. King Baldwin IV is dying painfully from his crippling leprosy, the Knights Templar are restlessly itching for a battle with the Muslims, their sworn enemy, and on the other side of the wall, a new Muslim assault is being only barely kept at bay by the efforts of their sultan, Saladin. The truce will not last much longer, and Balian’s part in this is larger than he yet knows. It will be a long, unforgiving road ahead for him, but with his wife’s eternal soul in the balance, he is willing to do anything to unchain her from the fiery pits below.

Let me start with the big flaw before I start gushing. Before it gets any farther, I have to comment on the fact that Balian is a total Harry Stu. In internet lingo, for those not in on the jive, that means that his character is just a LITTLE too perfect. He just happens to know a lot of things about a lot of things that would be helpful in the Holy Land, including the construction of siege engines, leading large groups of men, and considering he’s played by Orlando Bloom, professional heart-throb, he looks damn good while he does it. It all gets to be a little much sometimes, and by the end, I felt more than a little tinge of disgust for him and his implausible perfection. You know how awesome and perfect Balian is? During a boat trip to Jerusalem, his boat capsizes and sinks in a storm; he wakes up the next morning on the beach with no fellow survivors and a saddled horse ready to give him a lift! How serendipitous!

But when I say that that’s really the only thing I think is wrong with it, I mean it. Director Ridley Scott is so good he can make any subject come alive, and it just so happens that he also found one of my favorite historical periods fascinating. Every detail, with the exception of ultra-perfect Balian, is down to the T. Scott has recreated the Middle Ages with such a realism that they speak to us through the ages in the very subtext of his work. From the weaponry, the architecture, the interactions between people, to even the battle formations and times of day that Muslims and Christians fought during the 12th century, this is all genuine. there are so many stories to be told here, during the reconstruction of Europe from its massive, tragic downfall in the 6th century, I’m so glad someone used this period. And not only that, but I really appreciate the use of the different faiths fighting it out as sort of an allegory for today. It’s the same fight going on with different weapons and words, which Scott cleverly alludes to at one point, making the emotional ties to this ancient era all the more indelible.

The main cast is equally proportionate to the supporting cast here. Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson, Michael Sheen, David Thewlis, and other power players make short but memorable appearances that resonate throughout the movie. My favorite of these is Ghassan Massoud, who plays Saladin. While we never see hm that often, his character is similar to Baldwin in that he doesn’t want war, but political and religious pressures are pushing him into a battle that will cost many, many lives. He is excellent, and most importantly he’s a Muslim character that doesn’t give way into stereotypes that so many other films would have. As for the main cast, I’ve said my peace on Balian, but it must be noted that not everyone’s like that. There are some real winners, like Eva Green, who plays Sibylla, Baldwin’s sister. Her scenes suffer the most cutting, and it felt so vindicating to see the Special Director’s Cut edition and piece together what happens to her. She is a force to be reckoned with for me, especially now that the cut has been restored. She is given whole new sets of scenes that add to the emotional complexities, especially the ones involving her son. Without these scenes, her character is very confusing and inconsistent, and it is a definite boon to the film that she not go from one emotional state to the next without any coercing. Jeremy Irons electrifies as Tiberius, the Marshall of Jerusalem and Balian’s moral compass in the Holy Land. His scenes are few, but they are key, and Irons shows his expertise in authoritative but sympathetic words of wisdom as he tries to keep Christian Jerusalem from going into all-out war with the Muslims and Balian from falling off the righteous path. Edward Norton is the emotional heart of the first half of the film as King Baldwin IV. Underneath a silver mask to hide the hideous deformities left by his leprosy, he is trying extremely hard to keep peace in his time by keeping both the Templars at bay and his court satisfied with the truce. But his frail condition has many worried that the Muslims will attack and he will be unable to lead, or, worse, that he is lying down and making too many concessions to their heathen demands. He has so much weight on his slender shoulders, and watching Norton valiantly struggle to keep lives from being lost is heartbreaking and wondrously inspiring.

Sweeping cinematography, an immersive score by Harry-Gregson Williams, an extremely able cast, and a rich realistic tone make Kingdom of Heaven a sweeping film that should be remembered with the ranks of Spartacus and Gladiator in the realm of great historical epics. It’s a whopping three hours for the director’s cut, the only cut there should be, as far as I’m concerned, so there’s a lot going on. Luckily, it’s all great, and with the exception of one or two faults, I would be extremely tempted to call this a perfect film. To get swept away in this historical fervor is a joy and a pleasure that I plan to relish more and more often. Ridley Scott strikes gold again, and the Holy Land is done justice by his beautiful eye and his great cast. I give Kingdom of Heaven 9 1/2 leper kings out of 10. A high recommendation!

Tomorrow’s Sunday, so I don’t know what I’ll watch! It’ll make for a good review, though, I think! Until then!

I won’t spend alot of time selling this film because the trailer looks very interesting. However, for those that need a little background, I will oblige you.

“Franklyn” marks the feature film directorial debut (I told you it was popular this year) of Gerald McMorrow and stars Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green and Sam Riley. The film takes place in present day London and a future city called Meanwhile City.

It’s the story of four lost souls, divided by two parallel worlds, on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates.

This film seems to attempt to aim high, and as it is a small indie film, I have to give it credit for doing so. So far, the consensus on Rotten Tomatoes (61%, 28 reviews) is, “Gerald McMorrow’s bold debut is a complex and ambitious film that highlights the director’s potential, but its multi-layered story takes time to develop and might be frustrating for some.”

The film made a stop at the Fangoria Trinity of Terrors earlier this month after seeing release in late February in the UK. Set for DVD release on Nov. 17, look for this film to garner more reviews, including my own.

Actress Eva Green has confessed that she hates being the centre of attention.

The 29-year-old star, who bagged a Bafta for her performance as the Bond girl in Casino Royale, revealed she was shy and often without words at dinner parties.

“At school when a teacher asked me a question I would almost pass out,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling Tatler.

“I was terrible and I still can be. It overwhelms me. I can be having dinner with people and I find I can’t say a word.

“So being an actress is kind of masochistic,” she added.

E’ atipico viaggio tra fede, destino e pazzia che, costruito su lenti ritmi di narrazione concede pochissimo spazio ai momenti d’azione. Un viaggio che, tempestato d’amore romantico, trova il suo maggiore punto di forza nelle curate costruzioni scenografiche, ulteriormente valorizzate dalla bella fotografia, dominata da toni estremamente cupi durante le sequenze notturne e dispensatrice di un’atmosfera piuttosto grigia in quelle diurne.

Un soggetto potenzialmente interessante, che però si lascia comprendere solo a 10 minuti dalla fine dopo un intero film completamente immerso una confusione e incomprensione totali. A metà, viene da domandarsi come si possano spendere soldi ed inviare nei cinema un prodotto così scandaloso. Solo nel finale, quando le nubi della confusione si diradano, si comprende il filo logico che unisce le quattro storie. Alla fine la storia, e con lei tutto il film, si salva.

Over time, the 007 series girls dropped their clothes in hope that their popularity will reach never before seen heights. Eva Green doesn’t make an exception.

The 29-year-old actress chose Eve costume for the December issue of Tatler magazine. She recreated a 1973 photograph of another cinema beauty, Charlotte Rampling, and has shown us why has she been part of the Bond list.

Eva is not at her first nude appearance. She also give up her clothes in Bernardo Bertolucci’s film “The Dreamers” in 2003.

Very interesting stuff.  Cracks is a new movie directed by Jordan Scott.  Never heard of her?  Probably you’ve heard of her father, Ridley Scott.  Those are some big shoes.

But on to this movie.  It looks like a lot of fun.  I loooove Eva Green, she could just glare at the screen for an hour or two and I’d pay to watch.  This movie is about a boarding school with a very influential teach, played by Eva Green.  The girls are completely devoted to her and she to them until an Spanish exchange student comes in and steals all the attention.  You’ll probably understand the story better once you actually watch the trailer.  The operative word about this movie should be ‘intrigue’.

The acting looks like it’s going to be very good.  Eva Green is always good, and it’ll be awesome to see her as a delusional villain.  Juno Temple has an infinitely interesting face, and mix that with that crazy hair and she looks like a very fun character.  This new Spanish girl is amazingly beautiful.

“Eva Green: Killing Ignorant Douches That Hide Behind Shitty ‘Don’t Attack Me I’m An American’ Gambits Since 1776.”

Perhaps I didn’t give Cracks the biggest of chances, going into the film only hours after I had emerged from my screening of Precious, another film which had knocked me sideways. In any case, it was with mild irritation that I trooped in to watch the screening of Jordan Scott’s (daughter of Ridley) first film. The thing actually turned out to be some gala-London Film Fest type screening, and we were treated to the lovely main star Eva Green turning up and giving a few smiles before the film started. This piqued my interest slightly.

Cracks is the story of a group of young girls at an incredibly stifling, prim, and strict boarding school in the 1930s. Juno Temple plays the natural leader of her social group – a young actress I remembered with fondness as Lola in Joe Wright’s Atonement. Her character is a precocious young thing, quite clearly in love with the mysterious, beautiful, Katherine Hepburn-esque diving master of the school, lovingly referred to by all as Miss G (Eva Green). The arrival of a new Spanish aristocrat pupil throws the happy balance of Temple’s character into turmoil as the affections of Miss G are transferred.

What can I say about the film? Well, it’s quite lovely to look at. Eva Green is absolutely beautiful, and it’s shot with glamour and ease. The countryside is beautiful and romantic. The setting and landscapes, coupled with the eroticism of Green and the young girls, imbues the film with a certain gravitas I don’t think the source material or directorial ambition alone possess. Scott seems quite capable of creating and sustaining an effective tone of mistrust, excitement and intrigue, yet she doesn’t seem at all aware of what to do with this.

What was this film about I ask myself? Was it the rise and fall of the mysterious Miss G? I never felt we were fully given enough of the character to know what to think one way or the other. This itself was something I quite liked. That was until a rather hammy breakdown scene towards the end. The unravelling of the character killed Green’s performance completely for me. In fact I would go so far as to say it was a ridiculous and simply quite bad piece of acting. And for the character and film a big “so what?” moment, if ever there was one.

Alternatively then, was the film about the girls, and their soulless existence at the school? Again, this setup was an intriguing one, and there were more than a few interesting characters amongst the schoolgirls you could have given a jot for. Yet I still came away having never really invested in anyone.

What the film is really about I’m afraid I’m still none the wiser. It hints at rather a lot and then delivers very little. It looked bloody lovely though, and it was quite gripping in parts. Another irritating sticking point though was the fussy orchestral score, which seemed to dip in and out of the proceedings almost constantly, to no real affect, other than to distract. Style over substance really, the whole thing.

Berets for me are a timeless fall/winter wardrobe must-have.  I have seriously inapropriate amounts of berets and i wear them every winter ever since i can remember.

Now a red beret is something special that’s why it deserves it’s own little post… It really adds a POP of color and 50s class to any outfit no matter how simple. The lovely girls in the following pics demontrate various ways to wear this cute piece of headwear. When worn with cold colortones(such as blue, grey, beige etc.) and perhaps a bit of plaid, it just adds a brilliant contrast and makes you stand out for all the right reasons. This does not mean you have to dress down with the rest of your look.. so put on your heels, paint your lips red and hit the town feeling fabulous!

Cracks is the directorial debut of Jordan Scott, who is Ridley Scott’s daughter.

Set at an all-girls boarding school in 1934, Cracks sees Eva Green (Casino Royale, Franklyn) playing Miss G, an enigmatic-yet-alluring teacher who inspires fanatical loyalty within the small clique of girls in her diving team. However, when the arrival of a Spanish girl (María Valverde) as a new boarder throws their cosy world into flux, all manner of nastiness ensues and a new side of Miss G emerges.

Cracks se passa num internato, nos anos 1930 e conta a história da amizade de Miss G, professora de mergulho. Tudo ia bem até Fiamma chegar ao internato. A espanhola trás muita maldade mostrando um lado de Miss G que as outras meninas não conheciam.

Todos já conhecem Eva Green, que esteve em 007 – Cassino Royale e Os Sonhadores. Mas María Valverde, estará, sem dúvidas, expetacular no papel de Fiamma. Ela não tem muitos trabalhos conhecidos mas vai começar em grande estilo.

Além disso, quem também se destaca é a diretora Jordan Scott, filha de Ridley cott we este, por sua vez é produtor executivo junto de seu irmão, Tony Scott. Um filme bem família, não acham?

halloween is my favorite holiday. no gifts, no stress, no high expectations about what you’ve done with your life since last year. all you need to worry about is the following: 1. finding a kick ass costume, be it complex, hilarious or simply something that makes you feel good 2. going out and checking out other peoples kick ass costumes  3. having fun 4. pretending to be whoever you want for one night (so demons don’t steal your soul, of course)

last year i was hellboy for halloween (brief aside: it was weird to see how many people were shocked by a girl dressing up as a super masculine comic book hero! it made me wonder if it would have been more acceptable to go out as a “slutty girl” version of hellboy–which i had joked about doing, but which would have been blasphemous)…and it was amazing! i am almost tempted to post photos. i really turned it out. it turned out better then i expected, my favorite moment of the night being running into a comic book nerd who was like “couldn’t you find better horns?” (my horns were smallish) and i was like “yeah, i just felt like i couldn’t handle spirit gumming giant conical shaven horns to my head without actually shaving my head” to which he replied (and i quote): “i guess you really mailed this one in.”

sometimes you just can’t please the nerds, even if you are covered from head to toe in red body paint.

anyway, this year, i seriously thought about being edward from twilight because believe me, i could give robert pattinson a run for his money on wild stand-up-on-its-own hair and have access to cheap hobby lobby level glitter. also i thought doctor horrible as my signif is going as captain hammer but after hellboy, i wanted to be something more girly. not TOO girly though, like going out in lingerie and/or stripper costumes. i did joke (again) about being a slutty girl version of dr. horrible (which i think would look something like those naughty nurse costumes but with welding glasses) but of course i could never profane something so amazing just to show off cleavage.

so since i have developed a new fixation on steampunk:

that’s what i am working on for halloween ‘09. my main inspiration for the costume is this lovely lady:though i am sure i will look no where near this incredible because i do not have a seamstress. there seem to be a lot of types of steampunks: aviators, mechanics, aristocrat, mad scientists…i am going more toward aristocrat for sure but i love all the looks.

steampunk, for those of you who are unfamiliar, is what i like to think of as what the victorian era (which fashion speaking is a big fave) would have looked like if books like dr. frankenstien, war of the worlds, the time machine were works of non-fiction and hot air balloons and blimps became a main method of travel. also if steam inventions had like replaced gasoline. like, if those inventions had taken off, how would it have affected fashion?

fun! right? it’s this whole interesting subculture and you would be really amazed at what people are into making steampunk or at least look steampunk, search that as a key word on www.instructables.com and enjoy.

i am pretty new to steampunk. it turns out i like somethings that i didn’t even know were part of the steampunk culture when i read/saw them. things such as the movie stardust and city of lost children and steamboy (which i really should have put together).

also the his dark materials trilogy and the league of extraordinary gentleman comics. maybe you are a steampunk and you don’t know it? i have put together a quiz to help you figure it out. here goes:

when mars was super close to the earth like five years ago, did you use a telescope to help you see it better or something like this?what time is it? do you have your cell phone on you or…do i need to turn a key in order to check my email on your computer?i heard you did some adjustments on your bluetooth, does that mean like you can get wifi through it or does that mean wheels?can i borrow your sunglasses? oh, you’ll need them to perform surgery,  go to the opera and then fly away on your airship? i guess that’s a no.when you get up in the morning? is the first thing you grab your jeans or your custom pin stripe marie antoinette corset? are you eva green?

if the answer is, bearded, stove pipe hat and travels by jet pack then you may be a steampunk.

ANYWAY, i find all this creative ingenuity really inspiring and i am looking forward to crafting my own steampunk character for HW ‘09. my signif is looking forward to it because that means he gets to take apart things with wheels (like a walking elmo we found at a thrift store today…wow, he was stoked about skinning elmo lemme tell ya).

i  MAY post some pictures of how things turn out with my epic costume this year. no promises, but it would be cool to document the evolution of it. i wish i could promise it will look like this lady below but i cannot build a black silken pirate hair ship, as much as i may want to. but i think it will be pretty darn cool.
