You might not know this but The Hollywood Reporter this week named Eva Longoria (a.k.a. La Prieta Fea) “Philanthropist of the Year,” reportedly…

“For her relentless dedication to giving back to her community and serving others as well as for her long-standing commitment to Latino causes.”

Which I think is great, because as a member of the uninsured Latino community, I could use a discount on the $34 Spanish tortilla that graces the menu pages of her Hollywood eatery.

Now, that would be very philanthropic… and delicious!

Actress Eva Longoria, a prominent human rights activist, was awarded the title of “philanthropist of the year” by “The Hollywood Reporter” magazine.

The charity carried by the “Desperate Housewives” actress have not remained unnoticed, and the Monday issue of THR magazine focuses on them, designating her the philanthropist of the year. The actress received the award due to her involvement in supporting humanitarian causes and total commitment to the cause of Latino communities.

Eva is the Padres Contra El Cancer (Parents against Cancer) association’s spokeswoman, a nonprofit organization seeking to improve living conditions of Latino children that have cancer and their families. Moreover, three years ago, the actress established “Eva’s Heroes”, a nonprofit organization in her city, San Antonio, which provides an intensive educational program for children with disabilities.

Also, Eva was executive producer of the film “The Harvest”, a documentary showing poor living conditions of 500,000 farmers children in America, of which most are of Latin origin.

Eva will celebrate the title Monday night at a private party held in her honor.

Tras el último capítulo de “Cinco Hermanos” (Brothers & Sisters) Fox emitió anoche el primero de la sexta temporada de “Mujeres Desesperadas” (Desperate Housewives) que no pasará a la historia por ser el mejor, me reí con algunos comentarios, sobre todo con la señora McCluskey (qué grande es Kathryn Joosten), pero como que nos espera más y más de lo mismo. Y es que, aunque siga la serie desde el principio, lo cierto es que en la segunda temporada se estancó, con una entrega bastante mala de la que se supo reponer gracias a unos buenos capítulos en la tercera y sucesivas.

Así, ya se nos ha desvelado quién es la “nueva” señora Delfino. Aposté por Katherine (Dana Delany) pero no, vuelve a ser Susan (¿qué le ha pasado a Teri Hatcher en la cara?) mientras la primera parece sufrir un brote psicótico. Claro que, como ya no está Edie (Nicolette Sheridan), con alguien tendrá que discutir Susan y no será con su hija Julie (Andrea Bowen) que ha vuelto a Wisteria Lane aunque parece que por poco tiempo porque el capítulo acabó con el vecino estrangulándola.

¿Qué vecino? Pues el hijo de los nuevos (por altura no era el padre) que también deben guardar un oscuro secreto, como todos los que acaban viviendo en esa calle. Por eso es por lo que se repiten como el ajo. Encima han tenido la brillante idea de hacer que Lynnette (Felicity Huffman) se quede embarazada una vez más, pobre mujer ¿para qué quiere más hijos si los que tiene ni aparecen? Encima gemelos. Y Bree (Marcia Cross) sigue liada con el ex de Susan (Richard Burgi) y a Orson (Kyle McLachlan) le han reducido su papel a más no poder.

Me falta Gaby (Eva Longoria), ella y Carlos siguen felices tras haber vuelto a llevar una vida más o menos acomodada con sus hijas y la sobrina de él, que le ha declarado la guerra a Gabrielle que parece que sólo quiere protegerla. Veremos que se cuece

Continuing in the tradition of class cancellations, six of my twelve hours of teaching this week never took place, either because teachers needed the students to take tests, or because the teachers were sick.  This means I spent a lot of time sitting at a computer typing away at my graduate application essays: 3 out of 5 essays are nearing completion, and my deadline is a month away! I’ve never been so far ahead of schedule.

None of my seconde classes were canceled, however.  That meant I could still go ahead with my carefully planned out class schedule.  This week we went over another idiomatic expression (“thick as thieves,” or “copains comme cochons“).  But the pièce de résistance was my social-networking experiment: the Facebook Classroom.

I had been getting several of those chain emails with attachments like “What if God had Twitter?” and “Isaac Newton’s Facebook Page,” which is where this all started. But we’d been told to stay away from religious themes in class, and I wasn’t sure how many of my kids were nerdy enough to be entertained by Newton’s hypothetical profile (unlike my friends, who I’m sure would be ROTFL.  Please note that the last word in that sentence was written with only sarcastic intentions). So I found something I was sure they’d all find funny:

Some of the classes thought it was funny.  That’s better than nothing.  One class, when asked if they thought it was a funny joke, said, “No, because it’s childish.” I retorted, “Too bad! ‘Cuz we’re doing one just like it!” And in the end, it was the doing that brought them to the dark side…

So here’s what I asked them to do:

• Pick a well-known Anglophone figure: celebrity / politician / actor / musician / fictional character / etc.
• Pretend to be the character and fill out a Facebook profile.
• Make friends: requests are made in person.  If you accept, leave your new friend a message on the wall. If you decline, let the asker know why.
• Share your profile with the class.

The writing, they didn’t like so much. But making fun of the guy that didn’t understand the “pretending to be the character” bit of the instructions, and wound up playing Eva Longoria because “she’s so sexy” – with another dude playing Tony Parker? That, they liked.  I’m now going to share with you the fruits of this labor: excerpts from my students’ Facebook profiles that had me laughing out loud while riding home on the metro.  Also, note: all errors are my students’ doing…I actually do know how to speak English.

Numero uno: Chuck Norris. Sex? Male God. Relationship Status? He don’t need it. Hometown? The world is mine.

This charming student, when asked to describe Chuck Norris and share his profile responded with: “If I said who Chuck Norris is, Chuck Norris will kill you.” If this had been a competition, this kid wins.
