- Eu! Eu! Eu! Eu! Eu quero, por favor… Senhor, por favor, por favor, Sim? Me facilitaria a vida substancialmente!

- E… Qual é o outro presente?

Deus respondeu:

Cérebro, Eva, cérebro .

Hey guys!

Firstly, some housekeeping…

The iTunes issue has been resolved – so pop over to the iTunes Store and pick up the Secrecy & Sex EP!

New Band Downstairs is up too! See us listen (and react!) to our session for The Paul McLoone Show on Today FM – and Chris & Niall discuss guitars (amongst other things..!).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYn4DQQ95g8

In addition you can catch an exclusive performance of Advertising Heroin for the very good people at Tuntribe in London (http://www.tunetribe.com) – interview on the way too, so be sure to check back!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPDd8gOy_6g

Meanwhile over at Indie Bands Blog, we are the Buzz Aldrin to (good friends and label mates) Mono Stereo’s Neil Armstrong!

http://www.indiebandsblog.com/european-bands/swedish-bands/band-of-the-week-14th-november-2009

Now…

Wanna here about London…..??!!

I’m writing a little late after the fact, as I took a little longer than the boys to get back to Dublin (Alice In Chains. Kentish Town Forum. ‘Nuff said.).

We touched ground in Gatwick on Thursday morning in jovial mood. The fruition of the last couple of month’s hard work was merely a couple of hours away.

With the Secrecy & Sex EP cast out into the ether, we had the small matter of a hat trick of shows in London town.

First up, Peter Parker’s Rock & Roll Club for an intimate little gig in the company of friends, fans and various interested industry parties. Muchas Kudos to Dimitri our sound engineer. A true professional who wrangled the best sound we could have ever wished for from a PA system that, in all honesty, seemed like an afterthought.

First night jitters were unarticulated – but I definitely had a butterfly or two rattling around in me.

This wasn’t aided by a last minute substitution of my rig’s (ahem) “compromised” amplifier.

These thing are sent to try us….

With adrenelin pumping, we kicked the gig out of the park. The current set feels unbelievably strong at the moment.

After much back patting, we began our cross town commute to dump our bags / guitars at my girlfriend’s place and leg it over to Proud Galleries in Camden to catch the tail end of Mono Stereo’s set.

We succeeded in one of those endevours (sorry Monos..!!).

Friday began with us having a couple of meetings during the day, and our little sit down with Tunetribe. All lovely and lovable people.

Then onto our show at The Fly on New Oxford Street…

Unfortunately this cool, little venue is facing the chop.

Something to do with trains and the 2012 Olympics.

I wasn’t really paying attention, to be honest.

The set was great and, strangely enough, Niall breaking a string second song in was the best thing that could have happened.

The line up was fairly tight, so we couldn’t afford to take time out to re-string Niall’s white Mexican Strat.

So we appealed to our fellow musicians for a dig out.

“Anyone got a spare guitar…?”

“Yeah, sure, mate.”

Cue a quick rummage in a gig bag to produce….

A white Mexican Strat.

Fucking hilarious.

The night got better, as the owner of this doppelganger was part of what became Our New Favourite Band.

The Meat Eating Orchids (http://www.myspace.com/themeateatingorchids)

The most fun I’ve seen on stage in years.

Don’t drink your lava lamp.

Sound advice.

Cheers boys. You are kings among (topless) men.

Post gig we boogied on over to meet our Mono Stereo pals who had invited us to a birthday party across town.

It was an amazingly funky apartment and everyone made us feel very welcome – they even stroked our egos enough for us to perform an impromtu acousitc set.

Great night of unexpected highlights. Roll on Saturday.

Saturday.

Ireland V France.

Future London Underground (FLU) night at Tommy Flynn’s.

Ridiculously extended post gig party.

You already know what Saturday is.

You know what happened at the match.

You may not have been at the gig, but all that needs to be said is that it was (for the four of us, at the very least) our best ever (seems to be habit forming at Tommy Flynn’s).

The post gig party is indiscribable and, to be honest, a little patchy memory wise…

All that remains is to thank all of those who went above the call of duty over the weekend.

Naomi (who’s getting metioned more than the band in this blog it seems) for duvets, blankets, party space and all round cheerleader coralling.

Tom for similar bed providing skills, uncompromising political (and Juliet..!) debate and keeping the Trad flame alive.

Ben Carrigan for cymbals and perfect timimg that only a drummer of his great skill can provide.

Dimitri for engineering services described above…!

Guy for his impromtu roadie services.

Sam from The Meat Eating Orchids for exactly-the-same-guitar belly laugh.

Mono Stereo for being the hosts with most-ness.

Dan Fatel (FLU) for an amazing night at Flynn’s.

Dan, Adam, Mark for all the help with the last minute Fly gig.

Gillian Baxter for the bullshit extraction.

James Batsford for the cross into the box on Thursday night.

Danny (#2) Payne for all round geezer-ness and PR mastery.

Danny (#1) Sperling our manager, who’s contribution is so endless, legion, universal and all encompassing that this is, ironically, the only sentence he’s getting.

And finally, Bon Jovi for waking up Shavoune Mills.

Disko.

X

Well, vamos a ver… ¿Que ha pasado….? Well, today was a bit mixed. Yesterday was nothingy as normal. That is to say, normal insofar as nothing hugely exciting happened. I went to my lecture. I did my laundry. My laundry was an issue. It always is. The washer didn’t spin my clothes round enough, so I had to wring them out, and THEN someone had just put their washing in the dryer as I wanted it. So very unamused. I checked every 20 mins, for like 40 mins, then gave up and decided to go do my drying at Rob’s. I will be doing all laundry there in future. It is like a palace, compared to where I live, let alone my laundry. So, yes, that was yesterday.

Today has been good. Well. I suppose. Upon walking to my first class of the day, a man came up to me wanting money for something. I heard him out, then explained that I was English. This did not deter him. Plans to give him a couple of Euros failed the moment he saw I had 30€. Especially when he said they needed at least another 20 for the kids. It’s for some kind of kids sports thing that includes pédagogie. Pedagogy is France’s favourite word, and I’m still a little sketchy upon it’s meaning. I think it’s something to do with education. It probably is. Anyway, I am a moron, and a moron minus 30€. I fear I may be on “La vraie escroquerie”. J’espere que non, and that somewhere, poor Jean-Paul is thanking me. He’d fucking best be.

Moving on. Spanish civilisation was fine, as always. I got 14 on last weeks test, which works out as 67 in real terms. Success! Library time happened. It is an odd library, with too many different levels. It gets a bit confusing. But, I found out where languages are hiding, so that is my new Mecca. English happened, and I got some work back, getting 13,5. So another success! I also got my cirefe work back, getting 17! I love this woman. 17! My highest mark in anything university-related. Ever. Fact.

Ce soir, I went to Cafe Español. It was Eva, Maria and myself. I had to fight back the crowds to get in (!) We played Mikado, listened to Spanish music, then retired to chez Eva to regard a film. It was kind of like the Argentine version of Little Miss Sunshine, but weird. Anyway, cider was consumed. Not alot. Her friends turned up. Who were chavs. What happened next was awkwardness of the French variety. I had to cheek-kiss the French men. It was just awkward. I thought they were all about shaking hands here?! Gah. Way to confuse me, France!

The average New Yorker doesn’t give much thought to what goes on above the frenzied city streets: peering up, distant rooftops reveal occasional tufts of green, bits and pieces of illegible neon murals, sagging, archaic water towers, rain-warped gargoyles and elaborate façades. Separate, shrouded, and private, they are seemingly disconnected from the chaos below. But recently, New York City rooftops have formed a vibrant, budding metropolis of their own; activists, artists and entrepreneurs are rapidly transforming the once bleak and dangerous spaces into restaurants, gardens, clubs, farms and even vineyards.

Rooftops have long been used as urban backyard and communal sanctuaries to under-age city-dwellers, sunbathers and gardeners alike. Previously, access was not favored by landlords or wary neighbors, and therefore kept relatively hush-hush.

An old-school, unfurbished roof

Now, in expensive, developing neighborhoods like Chelsea, the Lower East Side and Williamsburg, high rises hover over older buildings, promising private roofs with perfect views, heated pools, gyms, and spas overlooking the city. Exclusive rooftop clubs and bars are most popular; many remain “secret” but some can be found in rooftop-drinking guides.

A roof restaurant (Photo by HotelChatter)

Although newer residential buildings and businesses have begun expanding upwards, construction on older sites can be problematic, mainly due to The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, which is responsible for preserving collections of historically and/or architecturally significant places due to a “special character…historical or aesthetic interest or value.” According to NYC.gov, the Commission has designated more than 23,000 buildings in all five boroughs since its creation in 1965 and is authorized to approve or deny permission for changes to entire historic districts of the city.

A tenement next to a newer building (still under construction)

Still, requests to build on landmarked sites is a messy process, and the legalities surrounding residential rooftop access remain murky. Because they’re more public than apartments but more private than street-level spaces, it is difficult for tenants to gage appropriate roof etiquette. For instance, even though it is strictly prohibited by the NYC Building Code, landlords often lock roof doors in order to prevent noisy public gatherings. When it comes to barbequing on roofs, the NYFD warns against using propane barbecue grills, as it is “both dangerous and illegal.” However, “charcoal barbecue grills are allowed if “there is an immediate source of water” at hand.

A very illegal roof BBQ

Business owners tend to get into the most trouble: In 2007 the city sued owners of a Greenwich Village sushi restaurant for $500,000 for un-authorized construction on their rooftop. Some businesses, like Amy Ruth’s Restaurant on 113 West 116th Street, have started secretly harvesting their own “rooftop honey” despite the fact that raising live bees is illegal under the New York City Health Code (and met with a $2000 fine).

A 6,000 square foot organic roof farm! (From www.psfk.com)

But developers aren’t the only ones taking advantage of New York’s 944 million square feet of rooftops. The green movement has caught on too, and over the past fours years individuals and companies have begun transforming the urban landscape, planting gardens and trees on top of buildings in order to keep the city cool in the summer, insulate structures in the winter, and prevent storm-water from overwhelming drains.

According to a recent New York Times article, Governor David A. Patterson approved tax abatements in 2008, ensuring that building owners with green roofs receive a significant tax credit which can ultimately save New York City residents more than $5 million in energy cooling costs. Since then, Brooklyn and Queens have become home to large above-ground farms like the 12,000 square foot Gotham Greens, which is expected to produce 30 tons of vegetables and herbs by next year. The Urban Green Council hopes that green roofs will eventually beautify the city, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and create cities that “coexist in harmony with their natural environment and contribute to the health and well-being of all.”

(Time for reflection)

Feature Creep

Ask for Help

Thanks to EVA
