Sami’s organization, Holy Land Trust amazed us with their programs training many Palestinians in the principles of non-violent resistance to military occupation, and peace with justice. It’s one of many organizations working for peace. He argues, if Americans want to help Israel, the only route to peace and security for that country is to end the occupation of Palestine. Guns, violence, walls and prisons will never bring rest for Israelis. “There is room for all in the Holy Land, Jews, Muslims, and Christians. As in the past, all three groups can live in peace, together.”

“For the first time in Israel’s history, we are face to face with the Palestinians, without other Arab countries dividing us. Now we have a chance to offer the Palestinians a state

The General also “claimed with certainty that holding onto the West Bank and the people who lived in it was contrary to Israel’s long term strategy of building a secure Jewish democracy with a stable Jewish majority. If we kept these lands, popular resistance to the occupation was sure to arise, and Israel’s army would be used to quell that resistance, with disastrous and demoralizing results.” From Miko’s book, “The General’s Son,” page 49.

Getting back to Americans not knowing or caring, I believe that is changing. More Jewish and other groups in the United States are calling for justice. Mainline churches have become active in advocacy for Palestinian freedom, including boycott and divestment measures similar to those used to counter apartheid in South Africa. Evangelicals are calling for justice through EMEU and other organizations.

Hey everyone! This post isnt going to take long, I just want to update you all on what is going on.

Hey everyone! This post isnt going to take long, I just want to update you all on what is going on. I’ve been super busy with school and ministry stuff and this blog has honestly been forgotten a lot of the time, I mean, a paper for school vs. a blog post. Paper usually wins out… usually. Anyway, I wanted to let you all know of an opportunity I have to go to Wales for the summer. I’m hoping to just go and be a leader if I can. if not that then I will be doing children and youth work, which is also awesome. Wales is a lost place a census has placed the evangelical, church going Christians at %1. I feel called to go here, and I ask that you pray for me, for Wales, for my finances(I might not be able to get enough money up), and most importantly that God would work in Wales this summer. I would also ask that you might consider sending money, as I honestly dont have a good way to raise the money by myself. I’m not asking for huge amounts. Ten bucks will go a long way. It feels really weird asking for money, and I dont like doing it. However, I must humble myself and ask for your help, either in prayer or financially. That is it for now, I will let you know when I am going to Wales this summer, the IMB is still reviewing my application, but I know that whatever happens it will be amazing, cause God is good and is in control!

Until we meet again,

Chris

Let’s be blunt here. Nature goes through chaos to order to chaos again. The cycle repeats continually. Creatures evolve; creatures go extinct. Some are hazardous to the health of the rest; some are sturdier and survive much longer. Some destroy, some build.

Only one—as far as we know—thinks about itself and knows it will die. That’s us. And we could not do that unless we had evolved to do so. We are being what Nature has intended us—through evolution—to be. So we are destroyers….

OPINION – Last week, several news outlets reported that Chick-fil-A had promised to stop givin

OPINION – Last week, several news outlets reported that Chick-fil-A had promised to stop giving to anti-Gay groups after the fast food chain became the center of a turbulent social storm. While it would seem like good news, as the Brooklyn scholar once said: “It ain’t necessarily so…”

Chicago Alderman Proco Joe Moreno told reporters that he had received a letter from Chick-fil-A, which stated that the religiously fundamentalist 501(c)(3) non-profit that the owners’ family runs, the WinShape Foundation, ”is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process, will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas.

“Chick-Fil-A also agreed to amend an official company document to reflect that its ‘intent is not to engage in political or social debates,’ Moreno said.

“The company document, called ‘Chick-fil-A Who We Are,’ also will state that the chain will ‘treat every person with honor, dignity and respect — regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender.’ “[1]

The chain may say that they treat every person with dignity and respect, but Chick-fil-A core operating principles, and the Cathys’ WinShape Foundation are rooted in a Christian fundamentalism that does not make that possible.[2]

Let’s dissect this poultry pandering:

[T]he WinShape Foundation, ”is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process, will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas.

When they say that the foundation “is now taking a much closer look” that is not an agreement to stop funding far Right religious groups and astroturf organizations that veneer their political agenda with a family façade.

WinShape is a Southern evangelical Baptist-molded, Christian fundamentalist organization that requires a fundamentalist Christian lifestyle of the people and organizations which they sponsor. God, guns and greed good. Heretics, homos and hardship bad.

“I tell all my people, ‘I’m not working for Chick-fil-A; I’m working for the Lord,’” Donald Elam, a Chick-fil-A franchisee in Superstition Springs, Arizona told Forbes.[3]

Last heard, Christian fundamentalists have not changed their views on gay people. It is unlikely that the 91 year old Mr. Cathy and his very religious family, who still give employees Sunday off to go to church, have changed their deeply held religious beliefs either.

S. Truett Cathy, owner of the privately held Chick-fil-A, with a net worth of $4.2 billion, is the 89th wealthiest American according to Forbes [4]. His sons, Dan and Donald, have an estimated net worth each of $1.5 billion, according to PrivCo. His daughter Truett Cathy White and her husband are also billionaires.

WinShape operates foster homes, camps, evangelical operations in Brazil, a retreat center and WinShape International, which blend chickens and Christ into an evangelical fast food operation that would seem to have all the fixin’s of a chicken cult.

Cathy’s son-in-law and daughter run another foundation, Lifeshape, funded by Cathy with money from Chick-fil-A that hosts three separate evangelical ministries: IMPACT 360, The Summit at Fort Payne, and Communities in Transformation (CIT).

Forbes featured an article, “The Cult of Chick-fil-A” in 2007. The chain develops and promotes people that it picks up from their Foundations’ religious-based operations. They use religious zeal to keep low turnover and the Cathy family quite wealthy.

“We tell applicants, ‘If you don’t intend to be here for life, you needn’t apply,” Cathy, who opened his first restaurant in 1946, told Forbes.[4]

The company prefers married workers, and a third of franchisees have attended Christian-based relationship-building retreats through WinShape at their Berry College retreat in Mount Berry, Georgia.

“If a man can’t manage his own life, he can’t manage a business,” Cathy said. He also told Forbes that he would terminate a franchisee or encourage the firing of a person who “has been sinful or done something harmful to their family members.”

Chick-fil-A’s corporate mission, stated on a plaque at company headquarters, and repeated by Cathy frequently, is to “glorify God.” Retreats and company meetings all feature prayers, and heaven help the franchisee that tries to open on a Sunday.

The company screens prospective franchisees and management for loyalty, wholesome values and their willingness to buy into Chick-fil-A’s evangelical Christian credo.

“The Lord has never spoken to me, but I feel Chick-fil-A has been His gift,” Cathy, a high-school educated evangelical, said.

Quite a gift at that: Cathy takes people with ambition and almost nothing and puts them in business. Franchise fees are a fraction of other fast food chains. $5,000 in 2007 would be your buy in, compared to KFC which asked $25,000 and a $1M net worth. The Cathys put most of the money in and get most of it out. A franchisee of a Bojangles in 2007 walked away with $300,000 a year per restaurant. A Chick-fil-A operator might see about $100,000 per.

Tons of fried chicken and an ocean of lemonade generate millions for Winshape and Lifeshape.

His LifeShape Foundation’s Impact 360 program offers college scholarships and management placement at Chick-fil-A to students who live a lifestyle and religious philosophy in harmony with that of the Cathys. According to their website:

“IMPACT 360 is an academic gap-year experience with the mission of equipping members of future generations to become Christ-centered servant leaders.

“Our 18-20 year-old students spend nine months at our Pine Mountain, Ga., campus focused on apologetics and worldview studies, leadership training at corporate Chick-fil-A, and weekly local service projects. The program includes a month-long international mission trip to Brazil, 15 hours of college credit from Union University, and the unique opportunity to live in ultimate community with other like-minded young adults.”

Many of Chick-fil-A’s core employees are schooled in, and agree to live by, a world view that rejects not only the LGBT community, but other religions from Buddhism to Judaism to Islam, and the secular Americans who range from agnostic to atheist.

Apologetics is the discipline of defending a position, often religious, through the systematic use of information. What they mean is Christian Apologetics, which aims to present a rational basis for the Christian faith, defend the faith against objections, and attempt to expose the flaws of other world views.

Union University is an evangelical Christian school with equally dogmatic beliefs and training.

A former Houston Chick-fil-A restaurant manager, Aziz Latif, a Muslim, sued in 2002 after Latif claimed that he was fired a day after he didn’t participate in a group prayer to Jesus Christ at a company training program in 2000.

The big question: How do people schooled in apologetics, a world view intolerant of other world views, fulfill a Chick-fil-A mission statement like: “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect — regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender”?

It would seem that the funders of the chicken cult aren’t apt to change that world view any time soon. Truett Cathy’s statement on the Communities in Transformation website, another LifeShape organization, doesn’t sell their mea-culpa to the LGBT community well:

“It is unfortunate that many children in today’s society are a byproduct of a depleting culture that surrounds them from every side,” the statement for Mr. Cathy reads. “Both in their families and in their day-to-day world, children are fighting a battle with little support from their community. It hardly seems fair for the world to expect these young people to do what they have never been trained or even encouraged to do.”

Son-in-Law John W. White III likewise preaches the gospel of decaying society:

“It is imperative that we recognize our responsibility and all work together to reverse the cultural erosion of our families and communities.”

So, unless the Cathys have decided to change the fundamentalist mission statement of their foundation, or Mr. Cathy’s paternalist mindset, that ‘I know better than you because I’m rich and evangelical,’ there is no way that the Foundation will stop fighting the LGBT community.

It will just push that fight more quietly, through the foundations, or by doing what most of the 1% do when pushing an agenda unpopular with consumers: Bury it in astroturf grass roots groups to avoid direct connection to their products and brands.

To their statement that they will “remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas” they have already demonstrated that they can’t live by that credo. Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council are both avowedly political and anti LGBT.

Their support of religious activities and organizations that believe that LGBT people are a moral abomination, and their intolerance of peoples of other faiths will not change any time soon.

Which begs the question: Why would Alderman Moreno, whose rich, diverse community, other than his evangelical Christian constituency, seems to be still part of that “depleting culture that surrounds them from every side” of which Mr. Cathy speaks, pass along this whitewash letter as if it were good news to the LGBT community?

You make a few billion and want a foundation? Nifty. You want a modern, religiously, ethnically, and sexually diverse America to eat at Chick-fil-A?

Until the Cathys quit trying to infuse their fried chicken with their narrow view of the world, and make their workplace and management more representative of the diverse America that we live in, it would seem that the only people whom the Cathys and their Chick-fil-A really want to serve are the white, the Right and the exceptionally uptight.

I still won’t go in.

My shiny two.

Bill Maher is one of the “9/11 liberals” who believe that Islam as a religion is different and decidedly worse than all other religions.

Why are atheists so quick to jump on christian-right bandwagons in their positioning against another abrahamic religion?

Salman Rushdie is running around on his book tour for Joseph Anton, making the point that all the outrage about offenses to Islam, whether it’s because of a novel like his Satanic Verses or Danish or French cartoons or the Innocence of Muslims video, is not about religion, it is about politics. It is about political leaders getting their folks wee wee’d up to make them ignore their real problems.

The GOP and Fox News are especially outraged about this use of religion to control people politically. Hey, it takes one to know one.

In Cairo, Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood wants to distract its people from the fact that they lived in slums under Mubarak and are living in slums under the Muslim Brotherhood.

Here at home, the party of multi-millionaires knows that there aren’t enough of them to win elections by themselves, and they also know that their interests don’t line up with those of average working people. So they have to get the people in Cairo, Illinois (and Georgia, Nebraska, West Virginia, Ohio, and Oregon) to focus on something else and get really angry about it, so they’ll vote GOP against their own interests.

Getting Christians stirred up about Obamacare and contraception is just like getting Muslims stirred up about a video. Before Obamacare, 29 states had these rules about insurance covering contraception, and no one cared. Some of these states were among our most populous, like New York and California, and some were among our most conservative, like Arkansas.

I live in one of those 29 states. I never heard a word about the state requiring insurance companies to cover contraception from my church until suddenly President Obama did it. Suddenly they couldn’t bear to do what they were already doing because it was a violation of their religious freedom.

Yes, the outrage abroad is phony, but before we point out the splinter in the Muslims’ eyes, we should get rid of this huge beam in the eyes of our own Evangelical Christians and Catholics.

What does Christianity have to do with Judaism? It seems like everyone is asking the same thing these days. First, I got the question from an older lady at church. She didn’t get why I’m interested in Jewish history, traditions and culture. From the way she talked it was like we’d been reading 2 different books – even though I’m sure her Bible and mine say the same thing. But while mine opens up awesome historic writings jammed with deeper Hebrew meanings, it sounded like her Bible reads generically. Either that or she’s managed to skim over all the parts about the origins of our faith … or how early believers would have viewed prophecies and events … or how much the Feasts tell us about the Messiah. I guess she missed the part about God’s covenant with Israel too.

So to her the question made sense. Clearly she didn’t get the connection.

She’s not the only one. Although it’s exciting to see more and more believers waking up to the huge debt of gratitude we owe Jewish people today, at the same time—for some unknown reason—just as many Christians seem totally unaware. If you walked up to them in church and asked them, they’d probably stare at you with a blank expression. What does Christianity have to do with Judaism?

So it’s no surprise then that Jewish people are asking the same thing.

Astonishment is a normal first reaction when I ask these friends more about their history, faith and how they observe it. They’re usually skeptical to some extent. But even then my Jewish friends are pretty good about helping me dig deeper. Maybe they’re waiting for me to slip up and give them a clue as to why a Christian is interested to begin with. After all, where’s the connection?

One man I met was more direct than most. He was a Jewish leader new to our town and my plan was to meet and let him know about strong (non-Jewish) future friends and supporters here in the community. But it turned out he had no interest. Our coffee meeting turned into a cross-examination with him determined to uncover my dark motives in connecting with Jewish people at all.

Christianity should have nothing to do with Judaism, from his perspective.

So with Christian and Jewish friends asking the same question and with all the different reactions I’ve seen on this heated topic, I’ve asked myself the same question more than once. Really, what does Christianity have to do with Judaism? And why do I even care?

But somehow just asking the question helps me refocus. Without Judaism, I wouldn’t be a Christian because there’d be no such thing. We wouldn’t have Scriptures or any of those powerful prophetic promises. We wouldn’t know about miraculous fulfillments in and around Israel. God wouldn’t have shown His undeniable covenant with one tiny nation. We wouldn’t have seen the proof of His faithfulness. There’d be no understanding of good versus evil because we’d have no moral absolutes handed down through Moses. And in a world with no sense of evil, where would any of us be?

But for me it gets even more personal than that.

Without Israel, I wouldn’t have a Jewish Messiah.

I am a theology professor at a Bible College and a pastor. I am also a political conservative. I frequently write posts and articles promoting political conservatism. Recently, some of my students have politely inquired how I could publically criticize Mormon theology in the classroom and from behind the pulpit and yet privately promote the Presidential candidacy of Mitt Romney, who is a professing Mormon. Here is my basic response:

The last time I checked, Jesus is not on the 2012 presidential ballot. Therefore, I have to vote for which of the two existing candidates, I believe better reflects biblical values. Keep in mind that a president is not in power to promote theology. That is what pastors and theologians are for. Rather, a president is elected to politically and economically govern our country. Therefore, I pick a president not based on his personal theology but rather upon his philosophy of government. When you compare Romney’s philosophy of government to Obama’s philosophy of government, which philosophy better mirrors biblical values? This is a question that all Christians need to ask in this upcoming election. For me, the answer is a no-brainer. Romney’s philosophy of government, while not perfect, is much closer to Scripture than Obama’s.

Here are some issues that I look at to discern the biblical orientation of the governing philosophy of any politician. With each issue I have included some Bible verse references in order to demonstrate to the reader that these preferences are not uniquely mine but rather are derived from the pages of God’s Word. These issues can be categorized under the following headings: economic issues, social issues, and foreign affairs matters.

<img title="U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during a campaign event at Watson Truck and Supply in Hobbs, New Mexico, on Aug. 23, 2012.
Economic Matters

Because of biblical prohibitions against stealing and covetousness (Exod. 20:15, 17) as well as the scriptural promotion of economic self-sufficiency through labor (Gen. 3:17-19; 2 Thess. 3:10), I typically inquire whether the candidate will use the power of the state to take the income of the earner and redistribute it to the non-earner? Due to the fact that the Bible teaches differing God-given abilities among human beings (Matt. 25:15), will the candidate use the force of government to guarantee equality of opportunity for all and leave equality of result to individual initiative, drive, work ethic, and talent?

Because God has given the role of charity to the church (Jas. 1:27; 5:14) rather than the state (Gen. 9:6; Rom. 13:1-7), will the candidate ignore this boundary by imposing upon the state ever increasing charitable obligations thereby marginalizing the church’s God-ordained role in this critical area?

Also, the Bible views the family as the essential building block towards a healthy society (Eph. 5:22–6:4). Since today’s families are under tremendous stress, will the candidate increase this pressure through the added burden of further taxation? Will he advocate excessive government regulation, which has the net effect of spiking consumer prices? Will he place employers under greater taxation and burdensome regulation leading to inevitable downsizing, layoffs, and the re-location of factories beyond America’s borders? All of these repercussions increase financial stress upon the family unit.

Moreover, because the Scripture advocates leaving one’s wealth to one’s descendants (Prov. 13:22; 1 Tim. 5:8), I am always curious about whether the candidate will hamper generational wealth transfer through onerous inheritance taxes, which force the deceased’s relatives to visit the undertaker and the IRS agent on the same day.

Also, does the candidate understand that the earth experiences cyclical heating and cooling (Gen. 8:22)? For example, global warming transpired during the time of the Vikings, long before the advent of SUVs and modern industry. Does he instead attribute such cycles exclusively to human activity? If the latter, he will likely favor increased government control over economic behavior, which can cripple an economy and yet simultaneously have a negligible impact upon either global warming or cooling.

In addition, does the candidate through rejection of true worship of God instead embrace earth worship (Rom. 1:22-23), otherwise known as the Gaia Hypothesis? In other words, has common sense environmental stewardship given way to pantheism and environmental extremism? If so, he will likely impede domestic fossil fuel and oil production. Such domestic drilling has the benefit of reducing America’s dependence upon foreign sources of oil that are often controlled by governments that do not have our nation’s best interests at heart.

Furthermore, because the Bible warns against the bondage associated with excessive debt (Prov. 22:7) and also categorizes unpaid debts as theft (Ps. 37:21), will the candidate continue to add to our runaway national deficits and debt? Increasing our national debt not only steals from future generations, but it also compromises America’s economic well-being.

In a similar vein, because respect for America’s founding documents are the best insulation against runaway government spending and concentration of power into too few hands, will the candidate favor appointing individuals to the judicial branch of government who actually care about the original intent of our Constitution? If not, he may allow judges onto our courts who see our Constitution as merely a “living and breathing” amorphous document. Virtually anything can be read into such a meaningless document in order to socialize our country.

Social Matters

Since Scripture makes no distinction between the born and the unborn (Ps. 139:13; Jer. 1:5), does the candidate favor legal protection for the unborn?

Also, because God has established heterosexual monogamy as the pattern for marriage (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:18-25; Rom. 1:26-27), will the candidate promote this divine standard as the societal norm, or will he instead reduce this time-honored standard to simply one among many lifestyle alternatives?

Moreover, because God has given to the state the power to execute criminals in instances of murder (Gen. 9:6; Rom. 13:4), will the candidate seek to abolish or promote capital punishment?

In addition, because the Scripture routinely warns of the dangers of abusing alcohol (Lev. 10:9; Prov. 31:4-5; 1 Tim. 3:3), pornography (Matt. 5:27-28), and gambling (Prov. 13:11), will the candidate support the legal right of communities to restrict such deleterious influences and establishments from their neighborhoods, schools, children, homes, and churches?

Furthermore, because God has entrusted the task of rearing and teaching children to parents as opposed to government bureaucrats (Deut. 6:6-7; Josh. 4:20-23; Prov. 22:6; Eph. 6:4), does the educational philosophy of the candidate empower the parents or the government teachers’ unions? The former can be empowered through educational choice, vouchers for private or parochial schools, and opt out alternatives for public school courses and presentations deemed offensive and harmful by parents.

Also, in view of the fact that the Scripture commands believers to preach the Gospel to every creature (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15), will the candidate use the force of government to restrict public expressions of Christianity in public places and schools as well as over the airwaves and on the internet? Interestingly, in Luke 22:36, as Christ was sending out His disciples into the hostile world from the Upper Room, He said, “and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one” (Luke 22:36). In so doing, Christ provided not only for the self defense of His disciples but also their right to defend themselves from aggression. Therefore, a good question for any candidate is whether he believes that individual and private citizens have a right to keep and bear arms? In other words, does he believe that the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees an individual right to bear arms or does he instead believe that the Second Amendment is some sort of nebulous collective right that has nothing to do with personal freedom to retain a firearm? Does the candidate instead support endless regulations and licensing requirements upon firearms thus paving the way toward their ultimate and total governmental confiscation?

Because the Bible teaches that all people have equal dignity and worth (Gen. 1:26-27; Gal. 3:28), will the candidate enforce all of our laws equally and fairly among all people regardless of gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic status (Deut 25:16; Prov. 20:23)? Discrimination against racial minorities should no more be tolerated than reverse discrimination against whites through quotas, timetables and set asides. White aggression against racial minorities should be punished to the full extent of the law and so should Black Panther voter intimidation against whites.

Foreign Affairs Matters

Because the concept of the individual nation state originated with God (Gen. 10:32; 11:1-9; Deut. 32:8; Acts 17:26), will the candidate favor submitting the political sovereignty of national governments to unaccountable trans-national political organizations all in the name of global governance? A related issue involves national borders. Since God has established national entities and their existing borders, will the candidate enforce our borders or will he leave America vulnerable to terrorist attacks through a porous border policy?

In addition, God has promised to bless the world through national Israel (Gen. 12:3b; Isa. 42:6; 49:6). Consequently, He promises to bless those who bless Israel and conversely vows to curse those who curse her (Gen. 12:3a; Joel 3:2b). Therefore, another important question entails whether the candidate favors reducing Israel’s existing borders in exchange for the illusory promise of peace. Such a process makes Israel more vulnerable to aggression and attack by her surrounding hostile neighbors. After all, it is Satan’s ambition to eradicate the Jewish people and state (Rev. 12:1, 13-17; Gen. 37:9-10). Thus, a candidate’s view on Israel largely tells me whether He is cooperating with God’s agenda or the devil’s.

Moreover, due to the fact that many evil rulers and terrorists abroad will only be deterred from violent behavior through the counter threat of force (Gen. 8:21; Jer. 17:9), will the candidate pursue a foreign policy of peace through military strength? Without this perspective, the danger is that the candidate will naively and ineffectively seek to deter evil in the world through American military reduction and unpreparedness. Such a policy of appeasement will in turn lead to endless dialogue, treaty and peace agreements not too dissimilar from the pattern espoused by Neville Chamberlain, apology tours, and financial subsidies given to America’s sworn enemies, thus endangering our own national security.

Conclusion

For me, the whole issue in selecting a political leader relates to his philosophy of government as opposed to his personal theology. As the old adage goes, “I would rather be governed by a competent Turk than an incompetent Christian.” Jimmy Carter serves as a perfect example. While professing faith in Christ, he had a non-biblical philosophy of government. Consequently, he has gone down in history as one of our worst presidents. Besides, if we are going to vote based on a candidate’s personal theology rather than his philosophy of government, I hardly see how Obama is much of an improvement over Romney. Obama attended a church for over 20 years that taught the non-biblical doctrine of Liberation Theology.

When all of the evidence is considered, Obama also seems quite sympathetic to the non-biblical Islamic religion. While I disagree with both men on personal theological issues, I will take Romney’s philosophy of government over Obama’s any day of the week. When it comes to governing philosophy, which is what really counts in a President, Romney is far closer to my understanding of scriptural truth than Obama.
