Caribbean Fusion is set to hit Uptown Toronto with the New Live Reggae Music Tuesdays Concert Series featuring Juno Award Winners @ Seven 44

Toronto, ON – May 27, 2013 — Freedom Time Magazine’s Leroy King and Event Promoter Andre Blenman have joined forces to commence “Live Reggae Music Tuesdays”; the event and live music night is slated to launch on Tuesday June 11^th inside Seven 44.  The Concert Series will feature Reggae Acts like Juno Award Winners Exco Levi (2013, 2012), Humble (2009) and Korexion (2007) in the month of June with the Higher Ground Band & Special Guests.

This event will feature live reggae, dub and the sounds of the Caribbean inside Uptown Toronto’s Seven 44 Restaurant/Lounge and Patio, where the bar is stacked with a wide variety of drinks ranging from cocktails, bar rails, domestic/imported beers and refreshing beverages.  Half Price Wings, Appetizers and Dinner Menu will be available to all attendee’s at the venue as well.  This event will also include door prizes and giveaways throughout the night.

Memorial Day has a deeper meaning for them.  They were there among the dead; they carried the bodies, of fallen brothers.  They were the defenders of freedom, the lucky ones that returned home.  Their memories were strong and clear, the times they wanted to remember were the times spent with their fellow fighters.  They could not forget the carnage and destruction left by the scars of war but their love of fallen brothers ignited traditions of remembrance.

They vowed to remember; they organized and joined together in organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Army Navy Club, the Marine League and the American Legion.  Traditions of remembrance and honor for their fallen brothers were building blocks for the next generation.  No day had more meaning than Memorial Day, a day to honor the men and memories from their time at war.

They were younger then, stronger in mind and body.  Today, time has taken most of them away.  Every year there are fewer veterans of the “greatest generation” to carry on those traditions of remembrance.  The traditions have been passed to a new generation; the sacrifices will never be forgotten.

The light of freedom shines bright upon our nation, the torch of responsibility to remember has been passed, and we must never forget.  Memorial Day is time set aside to remember the sacrifice of all our fallen brothers and sisters.  The sands of time will take away a generation but the traditions of remembrance will not pass away.

When the sun rises above our land on Monday we will be given another day to remember, we will remember those that never lived to see the light of God grace their dreams and hopes.  We will join as a nation to honor those that sacrificed their lives for each of us and for our hopes and dreams.

In the evening the light of day will slow set to the darkness of the night and we will still remember, we will remember those brothers and sisters that did not return.  We will remember because we can never forget those that served, fought and died for us.

You may have heard how my youngest son Harry left us in a dilemma with his Uri-Gellar-like car key bending capabilities!

Hanging on by a sliver of metal, the power of positive thinking managed to keep it in one piece whilst the locksmiths beavered away to cut and program a duplicate – bearing in mind that one of the locksmiths had told me: “That key’s got grief written all over it – I don’t want to touch it” when he first clapped eyes on it!

To prove my point, when I got home and told Sam my middle boy about it, he asked to see it and I took the lone key from my pocket, held it up and before our very eyes it wilted, then the end broke off and dropped to the floor without so much as breathing on it!

“Indeed, over time drivers have been able to receive more and more information. From sensors about pressure levels to front-mounted radars that detect imminent collisions – more information for the driver now equals more safety. The next evolutionary step is a connected car via smartphones or embedded systems,” says Pino Bonetti,  Social Media Manager for HERE,  in the Nokia Conversations blog.

He adds, “ At HERE we believe that a connected car is part of creating a holistic connected driving experience that keeps drivers safe yet connected, while allowing them to communicate and enjoy entertainment too. It solves the problems that people face as they move through their daily life, both in and out of their car, helping to save time, fuel and money.”

On smartphones HERE Drive is optimized for in-car use. The interface has been designed to use at arm’s length and voice commands are clearer and destinations can be pinned to start and turn-by-turn navigation can be started with a tap.
“Features like those provided by HERE appeal to a consumer’s desire for fuel efficiency. Landmark navigation has been a need of a significant portion of consumers that connected systems can finally fulfill”, said Chris Schreiner, Director of Automotive Consumer Insights at Strategy Analytics, in a Nokia Conversations blog.

Last year, Floris van de Klashorst, Vice President Connected Car for HERE, spoke about how the Connected Car, which is based on computer and sensor technology is not just a futuristic concept since many of the elements are already a reality. He quoted a survey by JCI which found that people in their 30s and younger wanted full connectivity in their cars with visualization, touchscreens, synchronization and power charging for smartphones and tablet PCs, as well as location-based services such as automatic directions to petrol stations.

Nokia is working with Ford for its Ford Evos Concept, which was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2011. The hybrid car uses SYNC® technology to connect drivers a cloud of information. “The intent is not to convert the vehicle into a smartphone, but to provide drivers with a personalized and useful connection to the outside world within the vehicle context,” explains Derrick Kuzak, the group vice president of Global Product Development.

HERE is working with Ford as one of its integrators to bring this intelligent technology to market. “This side of our business has expanded beyond mobile phones and includes products such as global location content, as well as scalable cloud services and APIs, which comprise Nokia’s Location Platform and support the Ford Evos concept car,” says Klashorst.

He goes on to describe how the Evos can learn a person’s driving habits and automatically adjust steering, handling and other functions. It also knows the driver’s commute details, the route they take most frequently, as well as what to do when they get in the car, such as playing a certain song, style of music, or tuning into a radio station.

Satnav maps can help drivers preview and avoid areas of heavy pollution and congestion or adjust the car setup to minimize the effects of these issues. In addition to its high-technology backbone, it is a hybrid vehicle, meaning that the battery kicks in automatically when the car is travelling through certain areas, highways or downhill roads, to save on fuel and/or reduce carbon emissions.

“We’re going to see a lot of connected cars over the next few years as the digital world moves deeper into the automotive sector; the result will be a personalized driving experience that is smarter, greener and simply better. Many foundational elements are common in a car’s dashboard functionality today – streaming music from our phone, built-in navigation systems and phone call accessibility can all be controlled from the steering wheel. More advanced applications include traffic-enabled navigation systems and Places of Interest (POI) search capability for restaurants and parking locations. The technology that will be brought to market in the near future will focus on deeper personalization, which will be powered by what many call intelligent technology,” says Klashorst.

Automotive Industries spoke to Floris van de Klashorst. Vice President Connected Car, HERE.

AI: How have the rapid rise of cities impacted the roles of the car and the driver?

Today 50% of the planet’s population lives in cities. By 2050, 75% will live in cities. This unprecedented rush to the city creates congestion, pollution and traffic incidents as city infrastructure struggles to keep pace with population growth. For many urban dwellers that means that the car is no longer a status symbol, but instead a just–in-time service that adjusts to a person’s commuting conditions.

AI: As congestion and pollution are on the increase in cities how do you see driving patterns changing and what role will cars play in this?

People are responding to growing congestion and pollution by opting for alternatives like car sharing, electric vehicles and public transportation. By becoming connected, cars play a major role in collecting, processing and delivering useful location data to help people combat these issues.

AI: Tell us a little about HERE and how it will help people make sense of the day to day problems they face when planning journeys.

At HERE we stay firmly focused on the driver in creating both standalone products and services for smart devices and in working with automotive partners to design in car solutions. That means, for example, people can plan trips at home on a tablet getting a route that helps then get around a traffic problem with an accurate arrival time. But they can also take that information with them syncing across their devices. So when they are in transit they will be able to get updates on the latest traffic conditions or an alert that a speed limit has changed in their route.

AI: What impact do you see HERE having on connected cars?

HERE is having a major impact on the connected car space. We believe that connected cars will be an integral part of driver’s daily lives. Connectivity in cars improves everything about the driving experience. It allows us to create driving experiences that are personal, relevant and always fresh regardless of whether they use their car or not.

AI: What makes Nokia’s data gathering and processing for people and businesses different?

We collect from both the physical and the online worlds, including 17 billion probe points and 141 million routing requests each month. But we believe a company should never collect data only for the sake of collecting data. At HERE we focus on aggregated collection of data for the purpose of improving the consumer experience of location related services. Data collection and analysis of data within our learning location platform allows us to create better routes, better maps and better experiences to help people navigate their lives.

AI: How important is this and how do you manage to do this across the globe?

This is an extremely important space for drivers, car companies and for us. At HERE we’re are using all of our assets across the globe to make the next generation of connected cars a reality in both the developed and developing world. Our Nokia heritage gives us deep expertise in mobile and the rapidly changing world of connected devices. In addition our acquisition of NAVTEQ gives us a more than 25 year head start in building high quality maps.

AI: What do you think the future of connected cars are and what role do you hope to play in the sector?

While autonomous driving will take years to become reality for everyone, connected cars are already a reality now for many. We are working closely with automakers to create connected solutions for the car that deliver on our vision today and bring exciting new experiences to consumers.

The scene at the legendary Baton Rouge blues hotbed was a marked contrast to the occasional weekend gigs Garner was playing at the time. It was the early 1970s, and Garner had just returned from an 3 year tour in the army. “There were no gigs,” he remembers. “It was all disco. There were occasionally American Legion gigs or weddings or rent parties. I played in my garage. I took a job with Dow Chemical, and I rarely played in public.”

Garner started moonlighting for the first few years he played out at Tabby’s Blues Box. He met such Baton Rouge bluesmen as Silas Hogan, Whispering Smith, Arthur Kelly and Raful Neal. He occasionally played in New Orleans at Rhythms on Bourbon Street, or with Bryan Lee at the late, lamented Old Absinthe Bar. But eventually he couldn’t keep burning the candle at both ends. He recalls hanging out at Tabby’s one night with Kenny Neal, who’d just finished touring. When Neal pleaded with him to stick around for another drink instead of getting ready for work in the morning, Garner tried to explain. “He said, ‘You got to quit that job.’ I said, ‘I know, but I still got to go to work in the morning.’ I left, but Kenny saying that stuck in my head. I had to quit.”

It was a chance for Garner to play the music he’d loved since his early childhood. Growing up near Baton Rouge in the small town of Oaknolia, Garner heard the music coming from the church near his house. “There were traveling preachers coming through, and I heard that, and I listened to WLAC in Nashville on Friday and Saturday night,” he say. “I started playing guitar because I had an uncle, George, who taught me. He was a paraplegic, and he played like Jimmy Reed. I learned through him, and started playing at the church and behind a gospel group that played on the radio.

“My parents didn’t want me playing the blues,” Garner continues. “They thought it was the devil’s music — then I guess the juke joint a quarter-mile down the road was the devil’s recruitment office. I never went into the juke except during the day, when it was a store.”

Garner continued playing music during his military service, and playing in army bands — while stationed in Korea — steeled him for the life of a full-time musician. Leaving Dow Chemical was initially tough for him, but now he has a devoted following throughout the country and across the Atlantic Ocean. “I’m on tour all the time,” he says. “I go to Europe and England a few times a year. Over there they really like my original stuff. They hear guys playing the blues, but when I come in, they come right up and say, ‘Thank God — a real blues band.’ We take it for granted here. They’re really appreciative there, and so am I.

I’m also on the road here in the US all the time,” says Garner. “I have a 2000 Ford van. It’s got 365,000 miles on it, and I bought it new. You do the math.”
