Blogs about: Events

Once upon a time, way way waaay before the internet, we relied on newspapers, flyers, posters and town criers to keep us informed. Now, however, it’s not hard to find a friendly neighborhood blogger (sometimes still employed by a newspaper, sometimes not) who has the 4-1-1 on all things important. And not just with what’s happening in the community you live in, but the communities — virtual or otherwise — that you associate with, too. It really doesn’t matter what you’re into, someone is keeping current on the latest goings-on.

It’s National Aboriginal Week at Dewson! Everyday this week there will be events both in and out of the classroom. Today, all the students from Grades 1 – 6 were treated to a special Aboriginal presentation. We were greeted by Aboriginal Elder, Pauline Shirt, who explained some Aboriginal traditions. Then, Métis historical writer/story-teller/musician and filmmaker, Virginia Barter, taught the students how to dance the traditional Métis Red River jig. A huge thank you to the Parent Council Social Justice Committee for making this assembly possible! Here are some photos of the assembly today:

Meeting in St. Louis and Celebrating Forty Years of Making the World Your Community: A.C.E. Staff Reunite at NAFSA Conference
A.C.E. - Associates in Cultural Exchange Blog

After seventeen years, a former A.C.E. employee reconnected with President David Woodward at the annual NAFSA conference held in St. Louis last month. Christi Castonguay started her work with A.C.E. in the early 1990s recruiting host families for summer group programs. Eventually she became the homestay coordinator with the International Training and Development Institute.  Later, she moved to the company’s Intensive English Language Institute at SPU. She finally left A.C.E. when she started a family and moved out of state. Christi was excited to learn that President Woodward would be at the conference held in the town where she now resides. After a long hiatus she has returned to the field of international education and is currently employed by Webster University. She fondly remembers her time at A.C.E. and credits her experience there with fueling her passion for intercultural communication. “What a great opportunity it was to see President Woodward again and learn about how A.

SCS Divisional Championships, Momentum
Rocks and Ropes Youth Climbing Team

Momentum Climbing Gym in Sandy, UT hosted a wonderful Sport Competition this past weekend.  Team Rocks and Ropes consisted of Alex, Claire, Eva, Ruby, Tanner and Garrett, and they all CRUSHED!  It is incredibly satisfying as a coach to see competitor’s hard work pay off.  Eva and Ruby waltzed into finals after killing it on their qualifier routes.  Alex Toth, exhibiting some of his smoothest and most confident climbing I’ve ever seen, finished in 13th place out of 22 just 3 spots shy of moving to finals.  Claire, also looking strong and confident finished at a nail-biting 11th place!  So close!  Last, but not least Tanner demolished his first qualifier route, and fell about 2/3 of the way up his second for a strong 15th place finish.  That was Saturday. The next day Eva and Ruby had to prepare for their finals round, only having one shot on one route to do their best and try to qualify for Nationals.  Both handily succeeded!  Eva finished in 6th and Ruby 3rd.  Well Done! Indianapolis Indians Game
It's a Wonderful Lifestyle

Two weeks ago, my brother surprised me by coming out to Indy. It was his first time, so DH and I wanted to show him a good time. Luckily, it was a beautiful weekend, so we could take advantage of some of the fun outdoor activities there are to do in Indianapolis. We enjoyed a night at the Rathskeller listening to Polka Boy. Saturday, we went to the Broad Ripple Farmers Market and out to brunch at Petite Chou. On Sunday, we wanted to do something fun, so we looked up the Indianapolis Indians schedule, and lucky us, they had a home game. We didn’t have tickets and had never been to a game before, so we figured we would just buy them at the gate. Tickets are tier priced, and we decided to get the 2nd tier seats, on the outside of field. We noticed a sign for the Captain Morgan Cove, but thought it was too expensive ($35 vs $11), so we didn’t get tickets in there. Not bad seats! The only thing to note is, Sunday is a special family day, where kids eat for free, so it was FULL o

The gifts of KSDS
KSDS Alum Parents

As you know, KSDS is in the midst of their “Six Weeks Till Summer” campaign.  Each e-mail update is accompanied by a short vignette from someone affiliated with Krieger Schecter, expressing the gifts they have received .  We thought we would put together a collection of those vignettes, as they truly capture the spirit of KSDS and mirror many of our own experiences. Click here to see who has been honored with a gift. And perhaps there is someone you would like to honor or recognize too. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Summer is a gift that so many of us relish.   What gift/s has KSDS given you? Bil Zarch, Head of School. The gift that KSDS has given me is the honor and privilege to work with such an outstanding faculty. Our students should feel truly blessed to work with a faculty that is as committed as this group. Their top priority is to bring every student to the next level. You will often hear educational theorists champion the idea that faculty development is a key factor to student succ

Vanity Girl and the Miss USA Pageant
My Vanity World

Miss Connecticut crowned Miss USA 2013 via MSN News So I just got back from Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.  The hotel was even more sparkly than usual, as 51 bona fide US beauty queens and a bevy of teen hopefuls and others descended on the Vegas property to watch Miss Connecticut, Erin Brady, win the coveted title.  What I especially loved about her, is that she proudly talked about her math roots, and her “secret glamour” side. We all have it… this secret glamour side. I was actually invited to Vegas by my friend, celebrity MUA and author, Kenetia Lee who is works with the Trump Organization.  She put together a brand new workshop called Confidently Beautiful and it was attended by many  Miss Teen USA hopefuls and other women and girls, some who pageant and other’s who don’t, around what Confidently Beautiful means to them. She invited me to be a panelist along with 2012 Miss USA Nana Meriwether, Cathryn Kennedy of St. Jude’s, Dorothy Evans Miss US
