Once again, I am going to defer my post which I have lined up regarding the Radio project for the In

Once again, I am going to defer my post which I have lined up regarding the Radio project for the Industrial Design module, and post that next week when I am finished it completely and pretty much when it is handed in, so I should have a couple of videos of the radio working and some proper photographs of it along with some work-in-progress shots.

Again, because I have made myself actively think about something else to write about for the second week in a row, it isn’t necessarily going to relate to design directly, but in my first post, I do recall saying that they weren’t all going to.

After the reasonably successful topic of IKEA last week, I say reasonably because I spent a while talking about IKEA to a friend for a good while just because of the post, I thought I would try and use the same technique to come up with something to write about, but because it is nearing the end of the semester and work is nearing an end, my desk is covered in things relating to the radio project so I’m going to have to properly think this time, and what have I come up with? Something to do with encouragement and motivation.

We all need it to keep going with what we are doing, that’s obvious, but think, just for a minute, when was the last time you gave someone encouragement, gave someone that all important push forward that they were looking for, but didn’t want to openly admit they wanted. Once you’ve done that, think about who it was you gave it to. Is there any link between that person, how close you are with them and the amount of encouragement you gave them? There probably is, but you didn’t even realise it. Now you’re wondering who the last person to give you encouragement was and your relationship with them aren’t you? Yeah, probably.

Right, that’s the philosophical bit out of the way, now the linky designy bitty. Designers are basically modern day inventors. The people who effectively helped to push the human race from living in caves to where we are now (in essence yes, I am keeping in mind the explorers, the doctors etc who have also made leaps and bounds in quality of life). There is one thing which all designers (and explorers, doctors etc) have, which makes them do what they do. The motivation to keep going, push the edges of the envelope, go the extra mile, never give up, and ultimately, help people. Well that is what I think anyway.

Just try to think where we would be now if it wasn’t for John Logie Baird not keeping motivated whilst inventing the television (or if you believe otherwise, Philo T Farnsworth), Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay conquering Everest, or Alexander Flemming discovering Penicillin. Carl Benz with his horseless carriage. William Murdoch and the steam train. Charles Babbage and the difference engine.

Honestly, I don’t think we would have moved far to far forward from the early Victorians, just before the Industrial Revolution. Yes there were people who didn’t think that, what the inventors, explorers, scientists, I mentioned was possible. In fact, in many cases, the majority of the people was probably against them, unwilling to accept what the future would behold. But there were some people, even if just one, who could see it too, see the same vision. And it is this, this encouragement, which gives the motivation to keep going which makes the world go round.

Ending on a similar note to that which I ended my post about sketchbooks. Give someone some encouragement, even if it is quite small, and it could in turn, end up changing the world.

When you’ve been raised in the tradition of the stiff British upper lip, public displays of devotion can make you a little uncomfortable. For starters, people in the West aren’t devoted to much these days – iPhones; Grey’s Anatomy; raw food – and any deeper devotion is usually very privately held. So being swept along by a throng of pilgrims on our first morning in Lhasa, many with callouses on their foreheads from hundreds of kilometres of prostration, was a humbling and spellbinding introduction to real and living devotion, Tibetan style.

In debating the question of whether to visit Tibet, one of our fears was that we would witness a culture being watered down by military intimidation, Han Chinese immigration and tourism. But, perhaps as a symbol of resistance, Tibetan culture and Buddhism are worn as a badge of honour. Having said that, Lhasa is a virtually segregated city and security in the Tibetan quarter makes you wonder if Obama might be visiting – night time road closures; boys with guns on every rooftop and somewhat farcical foot patrols. But Tibetans are a tough mob – it takes a special breed to eke out centuries of existence in a frozen and vertiginous equivalent of the Nullabor plain.

Monasteries and temples are the order of the day in Tibet and despite visiting dozens, we never tired of them. Not at all museum-like, wafts of juniper incense and yak butter and the chanting of pilgrims making their fluid kora were a feast for the senses. Our diminutive guide, Chongla, liked to keep us on our toes with pop quizzes on the various images. Given how often we muddled up our Sakyamuni Buddhas with our Tantric masters, we were glad she didn’t employ the methods of reprimand used by monks in their debates, which involves an enthusiastic “whack!” delivered an inch from the face when you blunder the answer to an esoteric question. We eventually concluded that the more we learnt about Tibetan Buddhism, the more it completely mystified us, although I suspect that trying to explain the mechanics of the Holy Trinity to a Tibetan might have a similar effect.

A foreboding, silent monolith in a sea of Mandarin neon, Potala Palace is unrivalled in its dominance of the Lhasa skyline. Our first glimpse of the Dalai Lama’s winter residence and the seat of Tibetan government came on the late night ride from the brand new, gigantic train station on the outskirts of town, which rises out of nowhere like the Death Star. All at once, we felt excited, privileged, saddened and weighed down by the living out of a long-held dream. When visiting a few days later, we expected the building to be empty but were surprised to see that much of the interior survived the iconoclastic rampage of Mao’s Red Guards. That said, only a handful of the 1,000-odd rooms are open to visitors. Most definitely off-limits are those which might be construed as having a political element, such as the stupa housing the remains of the 13th Dalai Lama, the current Dalai Lama’s predecessor and no friend of China.

Earlier the same day we visited Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama’s traditional summer residence and where the current Dalai Lama spent much of his youth. Less visited than the other sites of Lhasa, we had plenty of time to wander the grounds and ponder what was left. One of the more fascinating and odd exhibits was a room full of horse-drawn carts gifted to the Dalai Lama by various heads of state and royalty on his coronation in 1950, a reminder that there was no motorised transport in Tibet at the time. Also on display was a small tricycle, which a monk explained had been the Dalai Lama’s 7th birthday gift from his English tutor. The living quarters were constructed in 1956 and in contrast to Potala, which is truly fit for a living deity, they are very modest – although there is a western toilet and a bathtub, which is a luxury in Tibet even in 2009.

I don’t think any of us will forget the sight of the empty throne in the main reception hall, robes folded and patiently awaiting their owner’s return. Hidden in an inaccessible corner of the room is the only picture of His Holiness tolerated in Tibet – a mural depicting a very young man, yet to acquire his trademark spectacles. Chongla was understandably reluctant to discuss politics – Lhasa is reputedly crawling with informers – but as we sat in silence in the courtyard outside, she casually remarked that although the buildings are full of beautiful things, they feel empty.

After four days in Lhasa, we began our journey that would see us deposited at the Nepali border. As if all the spectacular cultural sites weren’t enough, the Tibetan countryside also threw up some of the most jaw-dropping scenery of our travels. Every day it seemed we would cross another 5000m pass, marvel at yet another technicolour lake or glimpse an “8000-er” in the distance. Our penultimate night in Tibet was to be spent at Everest Base Camp, the details of which we hadn’t given much thought to – that is until our hungover driver started inventing reasons not to go. No chance, Tenzing! So after arriving in the dark and being shown to our dismal and overpriced digs, we glanced up and there she was: Mt Everest, or Chomolongma (Saint Mother) as the Tibetans know her, faintly lit up by a crescent moon and towering right above us. This magnificent sight was some consolation for having to pee in the carpark during the night, as the toilets were a special type of wrongness to be avoided at all costs.

On the suggestion of our recalcitrant driver, we were ready to go before dawn the next morning – only to wait around for him in the cold and the dark for 40 minutes until he graced us with his presence and drove us the short way to the viewpoint. Reliably informed by a fellow tourist that it was -10C, we stamped our feet as the first rays lit up the mountainside… and we felt very, very small. The prayer flags we carried up there and unfurled will hopefully fly in our Perth backyard one day.* When we could stand the cold no longer, we retreated to the car and about three hours later, began to feel our fingers and toes again.

The tale our journey through wonderful Tibet would not be complete without mention of Ryan & Jo, who foolishly agreed to be our travelling partners so many months ago. Wonderfully good-humoured and with a remarkable capacity for yak and potato consumption, we’re very glad they weren’t too put off by Linds’ incongruous references to Spinal Tap amidst the Plain of Jars.

Some explorers are truly testing the waters for human limits; such as the kids roaming the oceans and people like Geoff Holt, about to cross the Atlantic in a wheelchair.

Last week also brought Himalayan female milestones and polar speed records; ending with the annual Turkey story for the Thanksgiving weekend!

StatCrunch, take 3: ladies of thin air – beyond Wanda’s footprints With only Annapurna left, Oh Eun Sun is currently leading the world’s14×8000er female rank. But who was the first woman to summit an 8000er? And what is the history of women in Himalaya? Last week ExWeb’s Rodrigo Granzotto Peron continued his interesting crunch of the Himalayan stats, focusing this time on the ladies of thin air.

Spring 2010 Everest preview: Kaltenbrunner & Dujmovits Gerlinde and husband Ralf are reportedly aiming for Everest north face next spring.

2008/2009 Antarctica speed records… The fastest time from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole (1130 km) is currently 33 days, 23 hours and 55 minutes by Canadians Richard Weber, Kevin Valley and Ray Zahab. The fastest solo from Hercules Inlet is 39 days, 7 hours and 49 minutes bagged by American Todd Carmichael. From the Ronne-Filchner (Messner) start point, a distance of 890 km, the speed record is 24 days 8 hours and 50 min done by Norwegians Christian Eide (leader), Rune Midgaard, Mads Agrup and Morten Andvig – averaging a very fast 36.87 km/day. None of the teams/skiers used airdrops or sails for their record-breaking performances.

…and new season roundup Fewer teams are on the ice this season and 11 out of the 17 skiers are women. 5 skiers summitted Everest: Cecilie Skog, Ryan Waters, Meagan McGrath, Bill Hanlon and Arnold Witzig. 5 out of the 17 skiers are Canadians or Canadian residents.

Antarctic wrap-up: Cecilie Skog and Ryan Waters crossed Berkner Island and are skiing on sea ice towards the Dufek Massif, their gateway to the Antarctic continent. They travel fast, up to daily 25 kms in spite of lugging a full load so early in the crossing. Eric Larsen, Dongsheng Liu and Bill Hanlon reported one degree down while the Commonwealth Ladies were “almost sweating” in the sun.

Desert wrap-up: The river Nile Christian Bodegren reached his first big landmark on his Sahara crossing, The Nile. He changed guides and bought a new camel for the next leg.

Two Clipper Race yachts collided A dramatic start on 22 November to Race 4 of Clipper 09-10 in Cape Town, South Africa saw eight of the boats cross the start line for the 4,700-mile race to Geraldton, Western Australia, while a collision between Hull & Humber and Cork resulted in the two teams returning to harbor reported the Clipper team.

ExWeb interview with Geoff Holt, “I’ll be returning as master of a sailing yacht, despite my disability” Twenty-five years ago Geoff’s sailing career was cut short by a life changing accident which left him paralyzed from the chest down. He is now heading back to the Atlantic Ocean which he had crossed three times as a teenager; this time as master and commander of his boat, in a wheelchair and full of life lessons. “You can only achieve any of these things when you are comfortable with who you are as a person,” he told ExWeb.

17-year old Ryan Langley preparing for a sail around the world non-stop He got an introduction to sailing when he was just months old and is playing the violin since he was nine: American Ryan Langley is currently preparing to sail non-stop around the world, working full steam ahead with high hopes to secure a main partner.

A little turkey story rerun It began in 2003. The next year there was a rerun. Now it’s an ExWeb tradition. Here goes the annual turkey story. Happy Thanksgiving, guys!

So here you are, getting ready to enter the world of extreme adventure. You are preparing your sponsor and media pitch and time has come to decide on a strategy. Before you decide on which tale to present, ponder this:

A turkey was chatting with a bull. “I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the turkey, but I haven’t got the energy.” “Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replied the bull. “They’re packed with nutrients.”

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fourth night, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

Moral of the story: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth as measured by the height of its summit above sea lev

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth as measured by the height of its summit above sea level. The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in Asia is located on the border between Nepal and Tibet, China. There had been 3,050 ascents to the summit by 2,062 individuals.

Climbers range from experienced mountaineers to relative novices who count on their paid guides to get them to the top. This means climbers are a significant source of tourist revenue for Nepal.

There are great trekking tours available which is available to anyone who can walk for a few hours per day. These tours start in Nepal in Kathmandu and are very popular.

Mt Everest has an undeniable ability to seduce Explorers, Travellers and Climbers alike. With its breathtaking views and fascinating Sherpa people there is something for everyone to guarantee the experience of a lifetime.

Mt. Everest, so called after the first person to record its height, Sir George Everest, translates in Nepalese and Tibetan as Goddess in the Sky and Mother Goddess of the Universe, demonstrating the immense respect and reverence that the locals have for this awesome mountain. It is 29,029 feet high but it rises a few centimetres each year due to the huge geological forces acting on it.

The weather you will experience on Everest is extreme and rather unpredictable so it is best to be prepared for all eventualities. Spring is the high season for trekking, but warmer weather can mean there is a larger cloud cover, which obscures many of the fantastic views that are part of this once in a lifetime trek. For those willing to brave the colder temperatures of autumn and winter this is not such a problem.

A large problem on Everest is that as you reach higher altitudes the oxygen content of the air dramatically decreases. At 20,000 feet there is only half as much oxygen in the air as you are used to and by the summit oxygen is reduced to only a one third.

There are two times of year when conditions are most favourable for a trek to Everest Base Camp, either in the pre-monsoon springtime or the post monsoon autumn. Although, it is possible to join Treks that run almost all year round.

The main problem experienced on Everest is altitude Sickness, this is definitely something to take seriously and to take precautions against. There is no way of telling how it will affect you until you are at high altitude.

The easiest and most effective way to limit the effects of altitude sickness is by ascending the mountain slowly and giving your body time to acclimatise to the height. Above 10,000 feet (Base camp is at 17,500) you should aim not climb more than 1000 feet per day.

You also need to stay warm and conserve as much energy as possible, drink water and above all listen to what your body is telling you, if you don not feel right don not push yourself to hard because you may push yourself out of the trek altogether.

Make sure you pick the right trip for you, make sure you give yourself time to acclimatise to the altitude even if that means flying out a few days before your trek starts.

The Sherpa people are invaluable in making any expedition to Everest whether it be to Base camp or even Summit. They will carry your gear, food, tents and it is important that they are respected. They take great pride in their Mountain Climbing Heritage and without them you will not finish the trek

Wether you join a trekking tour or climb all the way to the top, it will be an experience to treasure for a long time!

Erik Weihenmayer blind climber.

“I think this is the best time in history, the most precious time in history to be a pioneer, to reach out, to seize hold of adversity and challenges we face, to harness energy not only to transform our own lives, but to elevate the world around us.” Erik Weihenmayer

Erik Weihenmayer – World-Class Blind Adventurer.

On May 25, 2001, Erik Weihenmayer became the only blind man in history to reach the summit of the world’s highest peak – Mount Everest. And on September 5, 2002, when he stood on top of Mt. Kosciusko in Australia, Weihenmayer completed his 7-year quest to climb the Seven Summits – the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, joining only 200 mountaineers who have accomplished that feat. At age 33, he was also one of the youngest. Additionally, he has scaled El Capitan, a 3300-foot overhanging rock wall in Yosemite; Losar , a 2600-foot vertical ice waterfall in The Mt. Everest region of the Himalayas; and a difficult and rarely climbed rock face on 17,000-foot Mt. Kenya.

In September, 2003, Erik joined 320 stellar athletes from 17 countries to compete in the Primal Quest, the richest and toughest multi-sport adventure race in the world: 457 miles through the Sierra Nevada’s, nine days, sixty thousand feet of elevation gain, and no time-outs. Averaging only two hours of sleep a night, Erik and his team surged past the finish line on Lake Tahoe, becoming one of the 42 teams to cross the finish line out of the 80 teams that began.

After Erik’s Mt. Everest ascent, Braille Without Borders, a school for the blind in Tibet, invited him to teach its students mountaineering and rock climbing. His many climbs gave the teenagers the courage to excel in a culture which affords few opportunities for the blind.Erik and six Everest team members went to Tibet in May 2004 to train the students, then in October led them on a climb to the Rombuk Glacier on the north side of Mt. Everest. Once seen as pariahs, the teenagers ultimately stood together at 21,500-feet, higher than any team of blind people in history. Steven Haft, producer of such blockbusters as Dead Poets’ Society, made a documentary on the ascent which opened to standing ovations at the Toronto, L.A., and London Film Festivals. The film was released theatrically in fall of 2007.

A former middle school teacher and wrestling coach, Erik is one of the most exciting and well-known athletes in the world. Despite losing his vision at the age of 13, Erik has become an accomplished mountain climber, paraglider, and skier, who has never let his blindness interfere with his passion for an exhilarating and fulfilling life. Erik’s feats have earned him an ESPY award, recognition by Time Magazine for one of the greatest sporting achievements of 2001, induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, an ARETE Award for the superlative athletic performance of the year, the Helen Keller Lifetime Achievement award, Nike’s Casey Martin Award, and the Freedom Foundation’s Free Spirit Award. He has also carried the Olympic Torch for both the Summer and Winter Games.

In addition to being a world-class athlete, Erik is also the author of the book, Touch the Top of the World, published in ten countries and six languages.According to Publisher’s Weekly, Erik’s memoir is “moving and adventure packed, Weihenmayer tells his extraordinary story with humor, honesty and vivid detail, and his fortitude and enthusiasm are deeply inspiring.” The book was made into a feature film which aired on A&E in June, 2006.

Erik’s second book, The Adversity Advantage: Turning Everyday Struggles Into Everyday Greatness, co-authored with business guru and best selling author, Dr. Paul Stoltz, was released by Simon and Schuster in January, 2007. Through Paul’s science and Erik’s experience, the book shares seven “summits” for harnessing the power of adversity and turning it into the never-ending fuel to growth and innovation. Steven Covey, author of the best selling business book of all time, wrote the Foreword. Erik has also been published in Time, Forbes, and Reader’s Digest.

Erik’s award winning film, Farther Than the Eye Can See, shot in the same stunning quality HDTV format as the ‘Star Wars’ prequels, was ranked in the top twenty adventure films of all time by Men’s Journal. Bringing home first prize at 20 film festivals and nominated for two Emmy’s, the film beautifully captures the emotion, humor and drama of Erik’s historic ascent as well as his team’s three other remarkable ‘firsts’: the first American father/son team to summit, the oldest man to summit, and the most people from one team to reach the top of Everest in a single day. Through screenings, the film has raised over $600,000 for charitable organizations.

Erik’s extraordinary accomplishments have gained him abundant press coverage including repeated visits to NBC’s Today Show and Nightly News, Oprah, Good Morning America, Night Line, and the Tonight Show to name a few. He has also been featured on the cover of Time, Outside, and Climbing Magazine.

In 1999, Erik joined Mark Wellman–the first paraplegic to climb the 3000-foot face of El Capitan, and Hugh Herr–a double-leg-amputee and scientist at Harvard’s prestigious prosthetics laboratory, to climb an 800-foot rock tower in Moab, Utah. As a result of their successful climb together, the three formed No Barriers, a non-profit organization with a goal of promoting innovative ideas, approaches, and assistive technologies which help people with disabilities push through their own personal barriers to live full and active lives. Erik also serves as a National Braille Literacy Champion on behalf of the American Foundation for the Blind.

Erik’s speaking career has taken him around the world, from Hong Kong to Switzerland, from Thailand to the 2005 APEC Summit in Chile. He speaks to audiences on harnessing the power of adversity, the importance of a “rope team,” and the daily struggle to pursue your dreams. Clearly, Erik’s accomplishments show that one does not have to have perfect eyesight to have extraordinary vision.

(MountEverest.net) With only Annapurna left, Oh Eun Sun is currently leading the world’s14×8000er female rank.

But who was the first woman to summit an 8000er? And what is the history of women in Himalaya? ExWeb’s Rodrigo Granzotto Peron continues his interesting crunch of the Himalayan stats, focusing this time on the ladies of thin air.

Women’s 8000ers
By Rodrigo Granzotto Peron

I – First Female Ascents on 8000ers:

EV – 1975 – Junko Tabei (JAP)
K2 – 1986 – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL), Liliane Barrard (FRA)
KG – 1998 – Ginette Harrison (UK)
LH – 1996 – Chantal Mauduit (FRA)
MK – 1990 – Kitty Calhoun (USA)
CH – 1984 – Vera Komarkova, Margita Sterbova (CZE)
DH – 1982 – Lutgaarde Vivijs (BEL)
MN – 1974 – Naoko Nakaseko, Masako Uchida, Meiko Mori (JAP)
NP – 1984 – Liliane Barrard (FRA)
AN – 1978 – Vera Komarkova (CZE), Irene Miller (USA)
GI – 1982 – Marie-Jose Valençot (FRA)
BP – 1983 – Krystyna Palmowska (POL)
GII – 1975 – Anna Okopinska, Halina Kruger-Syrokomska (POL)
SH – 1981 – Junko Tabei (JAP)

First: Manaslu – last: Kangchenjunga – Everest: two (!) female ascents in 1975

The table shows that the first 8000er summited by women was not Everest.

Members of an all-female Japanese expedition, Naoko Nakaseko, Masako Uchida and Meiko Mori topped-out Manaslu in 1974, one year before fellow Japanese Tabei Junko completed her Everest feat.

Junko became world famous for being the first woman to summit Everest on May 16th, 1975 (via the south side). Few know that only 10 days later, Tibetan Ms. Phantog topped-out Everest via the north side.

The last 8000er to be summited by a woman for the first time was, very recently, Kangchenjunga in 1998.

First female doubles: Junko, Vera and Liliane (Wanda permitting)

By her summit of Shisha Pangma in 1981, Junko became the first to bag two female 8000er virgins.

Three years later in 1984, Czech Vera Komarkova summited another female first – Cho Oyu – after becoming the first woman to summit Annapurna in 1978.

However, I have also included French Liliane Barrard, who completed the first female ascents of Nanga Parbat (1984) and K2 (1986).

It is a controversial subject though as K2’ first female ascent is credited to Wanda Rutkiewicz who actually climbed together with Liliane on the summit push. Wanda was faster and topped out a mere one hour ahead of the French.

In my opinion, the two women deserve to share the achievement and I believe Wanda would not oppose to this, had she been alive.

II – Female 8000ers historical ranking

01×8000er – Naoko Nakaseko, Masako Uchida and Meiko Mori (JAP) [1974]
02×8000ers – Junko Tabei (JAP) [1981]
03×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1986]
04×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1987]
05×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1989]
06×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1990]
07×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1991]
08×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1991]

Wanda’s kingdom

The 80’s and the 90’s were dominated by the first woman 8000er collector, the astonishing Wanda Rutkiewicz, widely considered the most talented high-altitude lady climber ever.

Polish Wanda summited Everest (1978), Nanga Parbat (1985), K2 (1986), Shisha Pangma (1987), Gasherbrum II (1989), Gasherbrum I (1990), Cho Oyu (1991) and Annapurna (1991). Intended to become her 9th 8000er, Kangchenjunga took Wanda’s life one year later – and the world lost an icon.

It would take 15 years for another woman to equal Rutkiewicz’s record.

Friday, final: Individual and National female ranking

Author’s Notes:
a) The lists are updated to October/2009.
b) Only confirmed main summits are accepted. Non-proved claims, fore-summits (like Shisha Pangma Central, Broad Peak’s Rocky/Fore-Summit, etc.) and disputed summits are discharged. Some facts were proof-checked with Miss Hawley’s Himalayan Database.
c) Some summits are still being investigated – so some entries may be revisited in the following months, with possibly a few corrections to be done.

(MountEverest.net) Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and husband Ralf Dujmovits are aiming for Everest north face next spring, according to local media.

Ralf and Gerlinde, together with regular mate Hirotaka Takeuchi, attempted the Supercouloir on Everest north side back in 2005. The climb was aborted when Hiro showed symptoms of HACE.

“I’ve been dreaming of Everest’s north face since I stood at its base back in 2005 – I just wanted to return there with my husband again,” Gerlinde told Neue Zürcher Zeitung on Friday. “Everest south side is too crowded, and most climbers there are on supplementary O2 – I’d rather avoid that side of the mountain,” Gerlinde told media after a lecture at Salzburg’s Film Festival.

The “inexistent race”

Ralf bagged his 14th 8000er on Lhotse in spring this year with Gerlinde. This time he hopes to summit Everest without supplementary O2.

The peak would mark Gerl’s 13th 8000er. With just Everest and K2 to go, Gerlinde said, ”I would be happy if Miss Oh summited Annapurna, so I could forget about that inexistent competition everybody keep asking me about! I don’t want to be the first, I am not giving it a thought: I just want to climb beautiful mountains via beautiful routes – such as Everest’s north face.”

As for other 2010 plans: “I’d rather focus completely on Everest until I’m done with it. Just in case though, I’ll be applying for a K2 climbing permit anyway,” Gerl was quoted by Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Yes, with the advent of summer, and more sunny days, hardware *does* fail. I just recently fried two

Yes, with the advent of summer, and more sunny days, hardware *does* fail.
I just recently fried two sticks of RAM, as I pulled them out of my PC they were so hot I burned my fingers. Serves me right for having so many Hard Drives in there without thinking about fans.

You may be in a similar boat, if you PC blue-screens and restarts, maybe it just won’t turn on, all are common symptoms of PC’s that are now overheating.
What can you do about it? Well to find out if your PC is overheating, grab either Speccy or EVEREST Ultimate (Trial). EVEREST is nice as it can be left in the system tray while you carry on working.

If any of your parts (Such as HDD, Motherboard, CPU or Graphics Card) are over 50 degrees for a desktop, or 60 degrees for a laptop, they’re probably getting a bit too warm for prolonged use. Naturally laptops run hotter, and some can quite happily sit between 50-60 degrees their whole life, but if possible you want to keep it cooler.

What can you do about it?

You might need to pull the sides off your PC and use a can of compressed air to blow out the dust / cobwebs. You can pick up a can of compressed air for around $30 from Dick Smith Electronics (Product code N1238). Yes, that’s $30 but if it saves you having to replace a few hundred dollars worth of parts, it’s worth it right?
Note: Do NOT use your vacuum cleaner. It’s far too easy to knock the parts, the brushes can cause damage, and to be safe you’d have to hold it too far away for it to be truly useful. Use compressed air.

Now, take your PC outside, perhaps on your garage floor or driveway with both sides off, stand it up, and blow into all the fans and around the circuitry. Be sure not to knock anything and you’ll be just fine.

What about your Router? Well if you cannot afford to replace your router with one that’s less prone to overheating, try moving it out of direct sunlight, or off the floor. You could try having a mini desk-fan blowing over it, or some people have even had good results using a Plate Stand to put their router on. If you’ve gotta get a fan on your router, it’s on it’s last legs and will need replacing sooner rather than later. See my previous blog posts for information on what routers are decent and what routers you should avoid, such as the freebies that many ISP’s give away.

If you’re still having issues with your PC overheating, restarting or freezing, then try posting on PressF1.co.nz and seeing what they say.

If this has been helpful to you in any way, please drop me a line and say Hi, share your thoughts, I’d love to hear from you

A four-part investigative report from Shisha Pangma, two Himalaya legends lost, Antarctica kick-off,

A four-part investigative report from Shisha Pangma, two Himalaya legends lost, Antarctica kick-off, a number of interviews with great explorers and spellbinding stories from the seas. We didn’t expect such an eventful November, but here it is.

ExplorersWeb fall 2009 Shisha Pangma true summit special report, part 1 Climb until you reach a point where you can’t climb any higher. Mountain tops are that simple. Or are they? Himalayan quests demand major sacrifice, often spanning decades, not to mention the very real risk of death. False summit claims steal not only from serious climbers but from every honest soul in the mountains. Because most every summit claim on Shisha last month was countered by contradictory reports, ExplorersWeb editors launched a major investigation of them all.

ExWeb’s fall 2009 Shisha Pangma special, part 2: Central Summit, virtually there? Due perhaps to the big number of “summits” actually ending below the knife ridge, Shisha Pangma is a vastly underestimated climbing target. There were only two summits this fall, and only one “Central summiteer.” But how low below even the Central point do claims actually stretch these days? Check the answer in part 2.

ExWeb fall 2009 Shisha Pangma special report final: false summit claims – and the winner is... Among all the incomplete, inaccurate or plainly wrong statements from Shisha Pangma this season, Annelie Pompe and Johanna Öhrn’s story got the cake. Aided by local and international mountaineers, one Swedish climbing veteran finally did what local journalists failed: unveiling a mess of false statements, contradictions, and pictures both stolen and manipulated.

Shisha Pangma TRUE summit report: and the winner is… “Pending,” ruled ExWeb about Andrew Lock’s Shisha Pangma summit when the climber could not provide images due to a contract with the Australian Geographic Society. But when an image from Shisha’s Main summit including details and GPS readings from summit day arrived, it became clear that Andrew and Neil were the only Shisha Pangma summiteers this fall. The achievement made Andrew the 18th man to ever summit the 14 8,000ers, and the first Australian.

Tomaz Humar Lost His amazing life came to an end on an unknown peak, in the company of local kitchen boy Jagat, on a climb very few knew about. Air Zermatt Swiss rescue team Pilot Robert Andenmatten and rescue-climber Simon Anthamatten finally found Tomaz at 5600 meters on the south wall of Langtan Lirung on November 14. Robert dropped Simon with a 25 meter static rope on the accident site but it was too late. Tomaz had died, apparently after breaking his leg in a fall.

The good guys In the relatively short time that ExplorersWeb has been around, we have lost too many great climbers, and friends. Tomaz Humar was one of the very first we interviewed, in 2003. Humar’s temperament and climbs left few indifferent and Tomaz a man to be remembered in climbing history. Read ExWeb’s American editorial and European profile about the climber plus a word from Simone Moro.

K2 pioneer Lino Lacedelli gone Achille Compagnoni died earlier this year at age 94. Friday, Lino followed Achille for one last time, after making peace if not with Bonatti, then at least with himself. Italian K2 pioneer Lino Lacedelli died on November 20, a few weeks shy of 84 years.

ExWeb interview with Bill Hanlon: One of the biggest difficulties in his job? “Access,” said Bill, “as result of political and geographical reasons.” One of the Everest summiteers who will challenge themselves on skis this Antarctica season; Bill Hanlon does all these extreme adventures to promote and develop public health and primary health care projects in remote and high altitude communities. Last week he spoke to ExWeb’s Correne Coetzer about his Basic Health International (BHI) Foundation as well as skiing to the South Pole. “Our medical work emphasizes improvisations and working with limited resources,” Hanlon told ExWeb, “This trip will parallel many similar issues.”

Preparing for Mongolia with a big list of “to do’s”, “might do’s” and ”have done’s” With less than five months before his Mongolia trek starts, “This business of searching for sponsors, I should explain, is a very time consuming duty,” Ripley Davenport told ExWeb’s Correne Coetzer who caught up with him during his preparations.

Eric Larsen, “The job of explorers in the 21st century is not to conquer these places but to protect them.” Eric is skiing to the South Pole at the moment, but this is part of a bigger plan; to complete the Three Poles in 365 days. Before he left for Antarctica Larsen spoke in length to ExWeb’s Correne Coetzer about the quest and its mission.

Popular re-run: Hercules Inlet start point – leaving from where exactly? This season there are three start points to the South Pole, the “classic” start from Hercules Inlet, the somewhat shorter route from the Ronne-Filchner Ice Shelf and the longer route from Berkner Island. Last week ExWeb posted a re-run about the Hercules Inlet Start Point.

Call to preserve the South Pole Dome The Dome at the South Pole has been the prominent feature at the Pole, sheltering as many as 200 scientists and support workers in the summer seasons and 50 winter-overs for 30 years. Replaced by the new building, the Dome is scheduled to be demolished in the next few months, but a small group of polar veterans is trying to preserve the structure.

Patagonia Ice Cap wrap-up: The Norwegians on the Northern Patagonia Ice Cap and the Germans on the Southern Ice Cap reported most spectacular views – mountains, forests and glaciers. The beautiful terrain though was not easy and progress slow.

MOUNTAIN EXPEDITIONS – MOUNTAINEERING IN NEPAL with Mountain Sherpa Trekking and Expeditions, Sherpa Guides Company.

Mountaineering is considered the keystone activity that Nepal offers to the climbers than any country in the world. The eight out of the fourteen 8000m peaks lie in Nepal including Mt. Everest (8000m), the highest peak in the world. Ever since, the country opened its peaks to climbers in 1949, the mountaineering activity has become the most popular trend of alluring thousands of adventures seekers to Nepal every Year. The pioneer of all, this Mountaineering was the major starter of tourism in Nepal that dates back to the Successful conquering of mount Annapurna by Mourice Herzog in 1950 and the Mt. Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. Since then, the record Setting and glory hunt of conquering these peaks have been remarked as the most prestigious earnings and so has been the ultimate dream of any climber to attain. Mountaineering in Nepal is also considered dangerous and life threatening due to the unprecedented Climatic Change and other hazards led by high altitudes. So, If you join any expedition with Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expedition, our highly experience Sherpa Climber will give you fully safety instructions before the Expedition began. This is very important to minimize the risk of unprecedented climate Change. The Nepal Himalaya has also remained as an inspiration from ages for people from every walk of lives varying from poets to researchers, climbers to trekkers, philosophers to saints and nature Lovers to adventures.

MT.EVEREST EXPEDITION

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world measuring 8,848m (29,028 feet) in height. It was first climbed on May 29, 1953 by a New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal. Mount Everest is also known by the Tibetan name Chomolangma (goddess mother of the snows), and by the Nepali name Sagarmatha (Mother of the Universe).
Everest had been attempted many times before the important expeditions being that of 1922, 1923 and 1924.The body of George H.L. Mallory who died in an earlier attempt (1924), was discovered on the mountain in 1999. More than 600 climbers from 20 countries have climbed the summit by various routes from both north and south. Climbers’ ages have ranged from nineteen years to sixty. Climbing on Everest is very strictly regulated by both the Nepalese and Chinese governments. Climbing Everest and Treks to Everest Base Camp are becoming increasingly popular on both the north and south sides of the mountain. On the north side, a Buddhist monastery is one of two whose locations were selected specifically to allow religious contemplation of the great peak. The other side is the Thyangboche Monastery in Nepal. The once active Rongbuk monastery in Tibet has required much rejuvenation from the destruction it experienced following China’s invasion of Tibet.

KANCHENJUNGA EXPEDITION

Kanchenjunga (8,586) is the third highest mountain in the world. From 1838 until 1839 was believed to be the highest. It is an enormous mountain-mass and many satellite peaks rise from its narrow icy ridges. It is located on the border of Nepal and Sikkim, just 46 miles northwest of Darjeeling. It is the most easterly of the great 8,000-meter peaks of the Himalaya.
Though not successfully climbed until 1955, it was first attempted in 1905, but four members of that international party were killed in an avalanche. As inspiring as Kanchenjunga’s beauty is at least the first three parties to ascend the mountain never attempted the final few feet to the summit out of voluntary respect or those who considered the summit sacred. The successful British expedition of 1955 set the standard by stopping a few feet short of the actual summit, in honor of the local religion.

LHOTSE EXPEDITION

Lhotse (8,516) is the fourth highest mountain in the world. Its long east-west crest is located immediately south of Mount Everest and the summits of the two mountains are connected by the South Col, a vertical ridge that never drops below 8,000 meters. Lhotse is sometimes mistakenly identified as the south peak of the Everest massif. No serious attention was turned to climbing Lhotse until after Everest had finally been ascended. Lhotse was first climbed in 1956 by two Swiss, fritz Luchsinger and Ernest Reiss.
In addition to the main summit, there are two subsidiary peaks, Lhotse Shar, which is immediately east of the main summit, and Nuptse, a high peak on the mountain’s west ridge.

MAKALU EXPEDITION

Makalu (8,463) is the fifth highest mountain in the world. It is an isolated peak, located just 14 miles east of Mount Everest. Its size alone is impressive, but its structure, that of a perfect pyramid with four sharp ridges, make this mountain all the more spectacular.
It has proved to be a challenging climb, as only five of its first sixteen attempts were successful. Previously, it had been admired and studied by several Everest parties, but like so many other giants in Khumbu region, it was not attempted until the summit of Everest had been attained in 1954. A French group first climbed Makalu in year 1955.
Chomo Lonzo (25,650 ft.) is a subsidiary peak of Makalu, rising just north of the higher summit, separated by a narrow saddle.

CHO OYU EXPEDITION

Its towering peak stands with Everest well above the surrounding mountains. It became a familiar landmark to climbers ascending Everest’s north face. Just west of Cho Oyu is the Nangpa La, a 19,000-foot glacier pass, and the main trade route between the khumbu Sherpas and Tibet. Cho Oyu’s proximity to the Nangpa la has earned it the distinction among some climbers as being the easiest 8,000 meter peak. It was the third such peak climbed, and the first climbed in autumn by two Australian.

DHAULAGIRI EXPEDITION

Dhaulagiri (8,167), whose name means White Mountain, is the seventh highest mountain in the world. It is an enormous Himalayan massif, located in north central Nepal. After its discovery by the western world in 1808, it replaced Ecuador’s Chimborazo (20,561 ft.) as the postulated highest mountain in the world. It maintained this standing for nearly 30 years, until the discovery of Kanchenjunga, which was then falsely believed to be the world’s highest mountain.
Dhaulagiri’s crest stretches for thirty miles, lending structure to an otherwise tangled topography of twisting ridges, glaciers, and ice falls. Along the main crest, several pyramid-shaped peaks rise. Four of these summits, numbered form east to west, rise above 25,000 feet.
In 1960, the Swiss/Australian expedition who first reached the summit did so despite their airplane having crashed during the approach. This was the first Himalayan climb supported by an airplane, although the plane was subsequently abandoned on the mountain.

MANASLU EXPEDITION

Manaslu (8, 163) is the high peak of the Gorkha massif, and is the eight highest mountains in the world. It is located about 40 miles east of Annapurna, the tenth highest mountain. The mountains long ridges and valley glaciers offer feasible approaches from all directions, and it culminates in a peak that towers steeply above its surroundings landscape, and is dominant features when seen from afar. The name Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa and can be roughly translated as mountain of the spirit. An all-female Japanese expedition successfully ascended to the summit, thereby becoming the first women to climb an 8,000-meter peak.

ANNAPURNA EXPEDITION

Annapurna (8,091) is an enormous Himalayan massif, the tenth highest mountain in the world. In 1950, it became the first 8,000 meter mountain to be successfully climbed. It is located east of great gorge cut through the Himalaya by the Kali Gandaki River. The mountain has the glaciers on its western and north western slopes, which drain into this gorge.
Annapurna is a Sanskrit name that can be translated as goddess of harvests or more simply the provider. Of Annapurna’s many highs peaks, five are labeled using some variations of the name Annapurna. Of these, the two highest (Annapurna I and II), stand like bookends at the western and eastern ends of the massif.

Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling… (2 Cor 5:2)

OK, the Lord gave me a real litmus test for my heart this week. He asked if I was longing for Him to return… today! After thinking about this (couldn’t stop myself from posting the picture of deep thinking) for probably much longer than should be the case for a believer of, let’s say… quite a few years, I decided I was longing for His return… after I checked off my list of things to do.

I mean, come on, there’s a reason you don’t see a whole lot of bands traveling with harp players- they’re just not that exciting. And floating on a cloud would be really cool… for about 30 minutes. I really want to know what streets of gold look like, but I don’t see me staring at a road for the next zillion years. So I find myself more often intrigued with the “here and now” rather than the “hereafter”. So how do I find myself where Paul was in groaning and longing for His return- today?

I believe the key is in making an educated decision. I feel confident in choosing between a Yugo or Ferrarri; sickness or health; rain or shine. But between this age and the age to come? Hmm.

The reality of not having sufficient knowledge of the age to come has hit me recently. I spend altogether too little time meditating and pondering on the realities of what the Lord has prepared for us. We know the verse in 1 Cor. 2:9- “No eye has seen, no ear heard, no mind conceived…”, but we rarely grab ahold of verse 10- “but God has revealed it to us by His Spirit.”

I’m provoked I need only to look at scripture and begin to ponder for the Holy Spirit to shift the scales a little in my comparisons. For instance:

How about Rev. 5:11-12. The most conservative number here has to be 100 million angels around the throne- singing in a loud voice! For perspective the largest stadium in the world is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which seats 250,000. That would be at least 400 sold out stadiums all singing at the same time in a loud voice! Can we even begin to imagine what this must look like! what it must sound like!

How about the New Jerusalem in Rev. 21 that will eventually rest on the earth. It is 1380 miles wide and high. The entire city is made out of pure, clear gold and 12 precious stones. It has 12 gates (that must be huge) that are each made of a single pearl. For a little fun, think about just the aspect of the dimensions alone:

The tallest building in the world is the Taipei 101. It is 1671 ft. tall, which is less than 1/3 of a mile. The tallest mountain- Everest, 29,028 ft., 5.5 miles. The common height of where the earth’s atmosphere becomes outer space- 62 miles! That is only 1,318 miles short of the New Jerusalem, which by the way would stretch from approx. San Francisco to St. Louis.

What about the 200 million horsemen? Or the radiance of Jesus in Rev. 1? Or the living creatures with 6 wings and eyes all over? Or the demonic locusts?

Can we even imagine these things? Not really. But the Spirit will begin to unlock the hearts and spiritual imaginations of those who meditate on the truths of His word to such a degree we can speak as Paul, and David as he said the one thing I want is to gaze on your beauty. It brings a new understanding of the counsel to think upon “that which is lovely”. In comparison to the age to come, what on the fallen earth is lovely that would warrant any thought at all?

This doesn’t mean not to appreciate, or even enjoy this present time. And this doesn’t invalidate my desires, or even diminish them. I am still praying for the fulfilment of those things. It just brings a little perspective. And if we begin to take the scripture and fill our minds with thinking about what God has in store, and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal the sights and sounds and smells of those days, I believe our hearts will begin to long and groan for those days of being forever in His presence. And as a side item of no small account, the trivial things of our day to day lives won’t illicit quite the same anxiety in our hearts in light of His coming.

The revelation that we can experience when we gaze on the beauty of Jeusus will cause our hearts to come fully alive at the expectation of His coming. Is this not what we were told Christianity was supposed to be? Well, it is! And God is anxiously awaiting one who will set his gaze on this One who is the Resurrection and the Life. Selah, His blessings roll on…
