Green Mountain Boxwood

I love boxwood…and use it frequently in my landscape designs.  Why? Because it stays put.  I won’t have endless trimming, as with the yews; they won’t get large, as with the junipers, and it has a nice waxy leaf to it.

Most importantly, it is considered a broad-leaf evergreen~thus color in the deary winter months! They are perfect for hanging your Christmas lights on.

There are several different types of boxwoods and within them, there are certain varieties that will weather the Iowa winters better than others.  This shrub can withstand full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soils.  I recommend not trimming Boxwood because as they say with Pringles, once you start, you can’t stop.  Sometimes the Boxwood can explode some sporadic branching, at which I would suggest gentle trimming with a hand pruner. (An exception to this “rule” would be if you were wanting to create a hedge.  Gardens with a cottage or Victorian flare have used the Boxwood in many forms)

Here is a quick list of some of the more commonly used Boxwoods in our area:

• Chicagoland Boxwood: possibly considered a hardier specimen of the mounding varieties of Boxwood. Grows approximately 2-3′ tall, 3′ wide
• Winter Gem Boxwood: 3′ tall, 3′ wide

• Green Mountain Boxwood: Probably one of my favorites is this pyramidal Boxwood; use this version to provide vertical accents along your front foundation.  Or in a cottage garden setting to create a small hedge. 3-4′ tall, 2-3′ wide

There are some considerations to be taken with the Boxwood.  Recently I have seen severe winter die back when Iowa has had harsh winters and crazy springs with late ice storms .  This year I’m protecting my Chicagoland and Green Mountain Boxwoods with a leaf shield you can spray on their foliage.  Wilt Pruf is a common product used to protect sensitive evergreens and the liking.

Last year I skipped Christmas.  I was busy playing in the southern hemisphere, spending 6 months studying plants in New Zealand.  They celebrate Christmas, but not in any major way.  This all translates to me getting doubly excited about Christmas this year.  I am not one for all the material bits that go along with it.  What excites me are the traditions, the time with family, the decor, and of course the food.  That being said, here is the first of several posts about how I love to decorate for the season.

Once Thanksgiving has past, and the cold sets in, I immediately start thinking about my outdoor decorations.  This year our November has been incredibly mild, and I have wanted to be outside (not normally the case in Chicago in November).  I wanted to try something different this year, so I decided to create a winter hanging basket.  I have seen them in a few places, but I wanted to give it a try.

Step 1.

The container.  Essentially what I wanted to create is a poof of Christmas greens, with no visible container.  I choose a fiber hanging pot.  I prepped it by filling it with Oasis, or just normal bricks of non-water holding foam.  I then wired those in across the top just to give it a bit more support. Right before you start adding the greens pour water over the Oasis if using, to hydrate it.

Step 2.

Greens.  There are two options here.  The first is to go to your local garden center, or florist and purchase an assortment of Xmas greenery.  They will be prepared and ready to use right away.  If you are a bit more do-it-yourself then go shopping in your neighborhood.  If you are lucky to have nice neighbors like I do who don’t mind a discreet prune of their evergreens, then go for it.  Look for different textures and shades of green.  If you are especially lucky you will have some deciduous shrubs or trees that have bright berries on them.  Don’t forget the classic red twig dogwood branches that should be brightly colored by now.  Grab a few armfuls of an assortment of greens and get ready to prep them.  Those commercial greens have been treated with a spray to keep them from sweating out all their moisture over the season.  You need to do something like that.  My favorite is Wilt-pruf.  It is a food grade wax that just seals in the moisture.  Spray it all over your greens and let them dry before using.

Step 3.

Get your shiny bits ready people.  Decide on a color theme before starting to assemble your hanging basket.  Do you want bright green and red, like I chose this year, or go natural.  Blue and silver is always classic.  Whatever it is, get it ready.  Check around for large oversize ornaments or balls.  Pinecones work great as well, with or without some sparkle on them.  You can put them together in clusters to make a bigger impact as well.  Choose your ribbon and have it close.  You also need some floral wire handy as well to hold all of your bits together.

Step 4.

Assemble.  Like in a kitchen, designing goes faster when you have everything laid out close at hand so its easy to grab on the fly.  I put my hanging basket up on a turned over container so I could easily design it without squashing the bottom.  I used some fluffy juniper and arborvitae to cover the green foam first, before worrying about anything else.  There is nothing worse than being able to see the guts of your design when it is finished.

Then start at the bottom of your container and stick the greens in.  With my fiber pot, I used my pruning shears to create a hole to shove the greens through.  If you are using a wire pot, it will be a bit easier for you to just insert your greens straight in.  I worked around in rows, trying to group some of the greens together to make a large patch of Blue spruce, or berried juniper.  But I also did not want to have too many of the same texture together.  Alternate colors as well, and check that you have some fun with the widths and droop.  Remember it is three-dimensional.  Don’t make it like Aunt Marge’s helmet head hairdo that is all smooth and perfect round.  Shake it up a bit, and make some things stick out more than others.

Work your way up to the top, working around your container.  Once you get to the top, work the outer edge to hide the transition.  Use greens that have some droop or bushy-ness to them to cover that edge.  Then head to the center to define your highest points.  Work in odd numbers, using 3 or 5 high points.  Remember to give your hanger room.  Stay about 4-6 inches away from the hanger at the least.  Then fill in between your highest points and keep the drama and movement going.

At the end insert any colored twigs or berry sticks into your basket.  Once all the greenery is in place, I start placing my decor items.  This year I used clusters of shiny red shatterproof ornaments tied together in threes using floral wire.  I used the wire to shove into the foam and secure them.  My final bit that I add to it is a bow and some ribbon.  I hang trailers of ribbon from the drainage hole using a paper clip.  It adds a lot of movement and leads the eye down to the rest of my decorations elsewhere around the landscape.  More about those later.

Step 5.

To finish, just hang your container in place, and step back to check that it is visually balanced.  Give it a snip here and there if needed with some pruning shears.  To keep it looking it’s best, go out with a spray bottle every few days and lightly mist it, even if it is freezing out.  This will keep the moisture up on your greens, and keep them looking good from Turkey Day to New Years Day.

Voiam să fac review-uri de zile şi nopţi petrecute, însă nu ştiu dacă-mi ies pentru că mi-a zburat starea.

Voiam să scriu că vineri seara am fost în barul “Hot shots” şi am ascultat live trupa Lipscani Band care cîntă coveruri foarte-foarte mişto. Băieţii m-au surprins cu o piesă de sezon care suna foarte bine, dar pe care am găsit-o într-o variantă mai slow. Iată!

Este compusă de George, solistul trupei.

Sîmbătă am fost în “Jaya Maison” să sărbătorim o Andree. Foarte mişto casa, preţuri acceptabile, dar dj-ul m-a scos din pepeni pentru că nu asculta “vocea poporului”  în condiţiile în care poporul era gaşca noastră, singura care dansa. S-a comportat nasol şi pentru asta are un mare minus. Muzica era mişto o dată la 5 piese, în rest băga după plăcere proprie.

Aseară am văzut minunăţia numită “2012″ o vrăjeală filmică despre sfîrşitul lumii. Nu m-a impresionat mai nimic, deşi distribuţia a fost miştocuţă. Same shit. Vine sfîrşitul lumii şi bogaţii scapă, iar noi, muritorii suntem înghiţiţi de ape şi flăcări. Apare un erou care-şi salvează familia etc etc etc. Efectele speciale sunt ok, dar nu-ţi iau minţile. Concluzia e că nu mi-a plăcut.

Şi aseară am dat o raită prin Barfly unde era pustiu. Două pişucuri (becks lemon) şi o promenadă tîrzie cu viteza luminii şi aburi din buze îngheţate.

Din nefericire nici Siberiada a lui Andrei Konchalovsky nu m-a dat pe spate, însă am citit că Nikita Mihalkov i-a propus o colaborare Angelinei Jolie. Uuuh! Pe lîngă asta am o listă lungă de filme romîneşti (co-producţii)  pe care vreau să le văd: Katalina Varga, Concertul, Nunta în Basarabia (cu febleţea mea Vlad Logigan) şi altele. Industria cinematografică romînească ia amploare, ceea ce mă face să zîmbesc.

Am 3 oale pe foc. Gătesc.

• I LOVE LOVE LOVE growing up. Making my own choices. Freedom. Absolute autonomy.
• Eating turkey and other meats is awesome. Like, hello, options.
• I am extremely happy to no longer be scared of dogs, and I’m slowly becoming less scared of horses.
• As much as I complain about the Evergreen, it is amazing how comfortable and competent I feel when I walk in here. I love being able to solve all the little bugs that come up with layout, software, personnel issues, etc. OK, maybe not them ALL, but as my lovely Scartown would say …

Christmas time is my favorite holiday, I kid you not I start singing Jingle Bells in preparation in September.  We have at least one Christmas CD in the changer in both our cars, we are Christmas fanatics.  Our house is completely decorated for the holidays and God bless my wife she already had the Christmas lights hung when I got home from my trip last week, which meant I did not have to go into the attic to get the lights down.

Did I tell you how much I love my wife, she makes the holidays wonderful.  All the decorations are hung in the house and both our trees are decorated.  We have one tree at the front of the house in a bay window towards the street and another in the living room.  Did I mention that my wife already had the Christmas cards in the mail the day after Thanksgiving, in fact we have already received several calls from you letting us know you got it, be patient if you haven’t they are in the mail.

The sights and smells of Christmas are just around the corner, I cannot wait until Christmas Eve, we have friends and family over and I cook a ham and we have more food than we know what to do with so if you are lacking a place for the holidays we always have an extra plate.  Then on Christmas Day we head over to my parents and exchange gifts.

Nu am înţeles niciodată de ce o femeie rămîne înrădăcinată în durere? De ce acceptă să fie bătută şi umilită, de ce găseşte soluţii de compromis şi de ce se ascunde în spatele ideii că aşa îi oferă o familie copilului?

Nu am înţeles niciodată de ce se lasă călcată în picioare la propriu şi de ce fel de dependenţă vorbim?

Mă revoltă să văd copii distruşi psihic veniţi din familii dezbinate unde poveştile cu cenuşărese şi zmei s-au transformat într-o realitate crudă pe fundalul ţipetelor şi pumnilor opriţi cu bestialitate în obrazul mamei. O mamă care tremură cînd aude cheia în uşă, care-şi face cruce poate-poate azi nu e nervos, care-şi varsă of-urile pe umerii blajini ai copiilor şi care consideră că asta e viaţa şi nu există sau nu merită mai mult.

E de vină sistemul, educaţia, destinul? Unde e problema şi cine o rezolvă? Care e începutul sfîrşitului şi mai există viaţă după? Cine le ajută şi cum?

Ştiu o mulţime de cazuri şi am asistat la unele.

Eu am avut parte de violenţă verbală care m-a  marcat şi care m-a distrus încet şi sigur. Cu greu reuşesc să mă reconstruiesc. Şi poate că dacă răiam într-o familie normală azi nu m-aş mai fi confruntat cu atacuri de panică şi dezechilibre emoţionale.

Îmi amintesc de un vecin care-şi bătea soţia. Ea fugea cu cei doi copii unde vedea cu ochii. O dată a venit la noi. Ea plină de sînge şi vînătă de mai demult, în picioarele goale plîngînd. Copiii o strîngeau de picioare şi tremurau ca varga. Erau în şosete. Cînd l-au auzit pe tatăl lor că bate la uşă şi urlă aproape că au leşinat. Ne implorau să nu deschidem că îi omoară.

O altă vecină se bătea parte în parte cu soţul ei, asta după ce băgau o cantitate de alcool considerabilă cît să nu mai simtă. Băiatul lor de cîţiva ani stătea ghemuit sub masă şi îşi astupa urechile.

Şi mai ştiu atîtea şi atîtea…

Nu e normal şi nu asta e viaţa! Nimeni nu merită să fie lovit, nimeni nu merită să trăiască în teroare. Pentru că la final totul va fi un mare regret, un regret care nu se va putea repara nicicînd. Şi mai mult decît regretul care apasă o asemenea mamă va fi nevoită să accepte şi distrugerea propriilor copii care de cele mai multe ori se transformă în modelele avute: un tată violent sau o mamă umilită.

Nu e poveste!

Mă duc la teatru la 19:30 la Nottara are loc premiera piesei “Nişte fete” cu Vlad Zamfirescu şi Cristina Florea în regia lui Cristian Juncu. Biletul este 18 lei.

Revin cu detalii, dar din cîte am auzit (din culise) piesa este foarte mişto, actuală şi bine jucată.

Azi am fost şi la aşa zisă conferinţă de lansare a filmului “Moartea domnului Lăzărescu” pe DVD. Cristi Puiu a ţinut un discurs mişto… mi-am dat seama că regizorii sunt de pe altă planetă. Dacă îmi ajunge bursa îmi iau şi eu dvd-ul.

* Piesa e ok putin cam lunguta, la ultimul episod m-a pierdut. Era aproape 22:00.

Vlad Zamfirescu putea mai mult, dar n-a avut cum si unde. A mers pe o linie si nu a surprins cu nimic. Asteptam mai mult de la el, voiam mai mult.

Cristina Florea si Catrinel Dumitrescu (ma inclin, doamna) au fost actritele care mi-au ramas pe retina pentru ca au iesit in evidenta atat prin rolul atribuit cat si prin joc.

Per total piesa merita pentru ca e drama si umor, pentru ca razi cu gura pana la urechi ca mai apoi ca cazi intr-o stare de meditatie ca mai apoi sa razi iar. Povestea e interesanta si e cea a unui scriitor in cautare de inspiratie care decide sa se intalneasca cu cinci foste iubite si de aici nebunia…

Unele replici cum ar fi: “ma bucur ca m-am calificat” mi-au ramas in timpan. E misto! Merita!

NU har dagen kommit. Ikväll firar studentradion sin 30 årsdag med fest på Jazzhuset. Det kommer bli en kväll att minnas tänker jag. Som vanligt kommer artister och dj:s representera bredden på stationen, med allt från hip hop till folkrock. Over the past two months the library has been through a number of big changes (with more to come). November 5th MUTPL launched into Evergreen, the new circulation system that we’d been preparing for months. As with any new system there were bugs and kinks to work out but I can happily say now that we are over two weeks in and everything is running smoothly.

The new system offers more options for our patrons to renew materials online, receive email notifications and request materials from other Evergreen libraries in the state.

Nu credeam vreodată să mă poticnesc în a spune lucruri despre mine… nu credeam vreodată că un Autoportret îmi ca crea atîtea şi atîtea probleme. Sunt blank cu totul. Studenta la regie habar nu are cum să înceapă şi cum să încheie, ce să spună.

Cine sunt? Sunt eu omul din faţa monitorului sau doar mă îmbrac în cuvinte? Cum sunt? Sunt o fire veselă sau tristă? De ce sunt? De ce aleg şi ce?

Intrebare: Sotul meu si-ar dori o partida de sex in trei impreuna cu mine si cu prietena mea cea mai buna. Ce sa fac?

Raspuns: Este evident ca sotul nu se mai satura de dumneavoastra. Nici nu se pune in discutie ca va confruntati cu o problema de cuplu. Din contra, aceasta experienta va poate apropia si mai mult. De ce sa nu implicati si niste colege de camera, pe langa prietena dumneavoastra?

Si, daca vreti intr-adevar ca relatia dumneavoastra sa decurga excelent, retrageti-va si lasati-va prietenele singure cu sotul. Daca nu sunteti sigura ca e bine sa actionati astfel, sfatul meu este sa-i faceti barbatului dumneavoastra un sex oral dupa care sa gatiti o masa gustoasa!

Raspuns: Acest comportament este foarte natural si ar trebui incurajat. Barbatul este un vanator si e nevoie sa-si dovedeasca priceperea in fata altor masculi. O noapte departe de casa, in compania fetelor necunoscute, il elibereaza complet de stres astfel ca se intoarce acasa mai fericit si mai relaxat.

Nu uitati: nimic nu intareste mai tare o relatie decat faptul ca barbatul este plecat una-doua zile pe saptamana departe de casa. Puteti sa profitati de acest timp si sa faceti o curatenie generala! Veti fi uimita ce fericit si dragastos va fi cand se va intoarce acasa. Ca sa-l surprindeti in mod placut, chemati-va o prietena si faceti-i amandoua un sex oral, dupa care gatiti o masa gustoasa!

Intrebare: Sotul meu nu stie unde e clitorisul meu. Ce sa fac?

Raspuns: Clitorisul dumneavoastra nu este problema sotului! Sfatul meu este sa va ocupati singura
de acesata zona si sa chemati o prietena sa va ajute. Puteti sa va filmati si sa-i faceti cadou caseta sotului, de ziua lui. Pentru a scapa de remuscarile ca ati fost egoista, faceti-i un sex oral si gatiti o masa gustoasa!

Raspuns: Nu inteleg unde este problema. Probabil ca ati uitat sa-i gatiti o masa gustoasa!
