L’heure est venue pour les Mac Aficionados de découvrir le «Cloud computing». Sous cette jolie appellation métaphorique (traduction anglaise pour «l’informatique dans les nuages»), le nom révèle un méthode qui gagne de plus en plus de popularité dans le domaine de l’informatique.

Pour faire simple, il s’agit d’une méthode de sauvegarde des données d’un utilisateur sur des serveurs informatiques distants reliés par des bandes passantes, données auquel il a accès, quel que soit le le lieu ou le temps.

Un article précédent présentait quelques applications fonctionnant sur ce mode, dont l’excellentissime DropBox. MobileMe, d’Apple est également un exemple de la méthode du «cloud computing».

Les avantages sont une sécurité accrue de la conservation des données, puisqu’elles se retrouvent à la fois sur l’ordinateur et sur un serveur distant, et une accessibilité en tous temps (faute panne du serveur!). Généralement payantes, ces méthodes de conservation de données sont populaires car elles permettent  également à des utilisateurs de partager du contenu.

L’application Evernote en est une qui révolutionner l’utilisation de prises de notes de bien des Mac Aficionados!

Evernote vous permet de conserver des notes, des extraits entiers de  pages web, du contenu audio, des documents de travail (comme les cours, par exemple!), des photos, des cartes virtuelles…bref, un tas d’informations indispensables pour qui vit dans l’ère du numérique!

Simple comme «Bonjour» de Mac (et oui!, fonctionnalité qui relie les ordinateurs en réseaux, là aussi pour faire simple!), vous n’aurez qu’à glisser dans l’interface d’Evernote le document en question, et à laisser la synchronisation automatique s’opérer. à Moins que vous ne préféreriez prendre une photo depuis la caméra de votre ordinateur et la transférer directement à Evernote qui se chargera du reste.

La cerise sur le gâteau: Evernote vous permet de TOUT retrouver! TOUT, absolument TOUT!!! Vous pourrez en effet rechercher un mot clé qui figure dans un document PDF en quelques secondes! Les adresses que vous avez sauvées et oubliées referont surface en un rien de temps!

L’application vous fait bénéficier d’un espace de stockage gratuit (à la manière de DropBox) que vous pourrez augmenter en adhérant à un plan premium.

Mac Aficionados, Evernote est un MUST. Aucune excuse de ne pas l’intégrer à votre «style de vie numérique»!

Evernoteを使い始めたこともあり、便利に使うためにEye-Fiを購入してみた。

自宅は無線LANなので普段使っていないコンパクトデジカメにEye-Fiを挿入して、そのまま撮影するとEvernoteへ自動的に転送される。なんとも素晴らしい。

値段としても8000円を切っているので、そんなに冒険感覚でなく試せる。

これなら、例えば名刺なんかを撮影するだけでEvernoteへ登録されるので面倒な作業なしに管理できる。シャッターを押して数秒後にはEvernoteに登録されていた。

かなり便利になること間違いなしだ。

This is something that I’ve learnt for my NCT seminar style presentation. I feel that it’s a really useful and convenient tool to share information with people.

Evernote is a web service and software application that allows us to collect notes and information. It’s something like a bookmarking a particular webpage but the edge Evernote has over the normal bookmarking tool in your internet browser is that because the notes and information are saved to your Evernote account, so you can access the notes and information

The cool thing about it is that it has handwriting recognition so if you save a picture with texts and cannot remember the file name, you can type the words that appear the picture and the file will still appear in the search bar.

Above is the link bar that is found on Evernote’s download page. You can drag and drop to your favourites bar so you can highlight any part of the web page and click on that button, and the highlighted parts will be added to your Evernote account. It’s very simple to use.

You can also share your information and notes clipped with anyone in Evernote. So your friends can see your data base of whatever you have collected in Evernote.

But the free account has its limitation. There are limited file formats supported that you can attach to a new note, unless you are a premium account user. Also, there is a limit of 40MB of storage space per month in the free account.

It’s WebWorkerDaily’s fault that I’ve bought an iPod touch (s aapl). (That’s my excuse, anyway.) As I looked at potential subjects to write about, I kept seeing cool apps, and I need to be able to test them, right?

But why not buy an iPhone, or a Palm Pre, which I’d had my eye on for several months? The Pre seems to be a good phone, but it doesn’t yet have the apps that the iPhone does. And the monthly fees for Pre service are considerably higher than what I’m paying now. The iPhone’s monthly fees are even higher, and many folks I’ve talked to don’t find it to be a very good phone.

So, keeping my current phone and buying an iPod touch seemed like a good compromise. I can get good Wi-Fi coverage in most areas where I live, so I’ll be able to go online, even without the phone function.

Many of my WWD colleagues already have iPhones. Aliza has recently written about good apps for web workers. Dawn’s shared her favorites, too. But with the holidays coming up, here are some of my ideas for apps to put on that brand-new iPhone or iPod touch:

Communication

• eBuddy. A multi-service instant message client for MSN/Windows Live (s msft), AIM, Yahoo (s yhoo), Gtalk (s goog), ICQ, Facebook Chat and MySpace Chat. Supports multiple accounts on the same service. Versions for web, Android and other platforms also available. Free.
• Facebook. A well-designed way for Facebook users to keep up with their friends while on the road. The app has had its issues, but they are apparently fixed now. Free.
• Gist. Scott and I have both found Gist useful, and the Gist iPhone app does a pretty good job of presenting a lot of information in a small space. Free.
• LinkedIn. This app keeps LinkedIn users, er, “linked in” from their iPhones and iPod touches. The latest upgrade adds some nice features, including an inbox for LinkedIn messages. Free.
• Nimbuzz. You can use this app to make inexpensive international calls over Wi-Fi. The app also includes a chat function, but it’s pretty rudimentary compared to eBuddy. Free app; rates for calls vary.
• RingCentral. If you’re a RingCentral user, you can use this app to manage your phone messages and more. Free for RingCentral users.
• Tweetie. There are lots of Twitter apps, but so far, I like Tweetie the best. It has a clean interface, and supports multiple Twitter accounts. Thanks for the tip, Darrell! $2.99.
• Waveboard. Mobile access to Google Wave. Will hopes for better access soon; I imagine that this app will become more sophisticated as Wave does. $0.99.

File and Idea Management

• Dropbox. This app is another reason to love Dropbox, which many of us at WWD do. As one would expect from Dropbox, it just works. Free.
• Evernote. My colleagues at WWD like Evernote, too, and I’ve finally seen the light. It’s a great replacement for PhatNotes, which I used to use with various Palm (s palm) products. (The Palm versions are apparently no longer available.) Free.

News

• Reeder. A very nice and elegant RSS reader that syncs with Google Reader. $0.99.

Just about every news source also has its own iPhone/iPod touch app these days. So far, I’ve been impressed with the ones from NPR and from some news outlets that have used the PodCurry platform.

Password Management

• 1Password. Manage and sync passwords. I’ve been playing with the brand-new version 3, and it’s good enough that I’ve moved from SplashID after many years. Use Dropbox with 1Password to make your password data available on multiple machines. $7.99.
• LastPass. Manage and sync passwords across multiple machines. The Firefox add-on for this service was included in WWD’s Add-Ons Collection. Apps for iPhones and other mobile devices available with premium membership, $12/year.

I’ve barely begun finding fun stuff, but I think I’m off to a good start with the Google Earth app, and TriPeaks Lite. I’m sure that I’ll find more, but I really need to get back to work now. Happy holidays!

What iPhone or iPod touch apps would you recommend for new users?

As promised in the previous post, here’s a review of popular note taking apps for Android.

What’s the point of having a smart phone if you can’t jot down the priceless quote some one made, in the office meeting, for water cooler talk later, or perhaps a compilation of quotes for your blog.

With the number of choices available in the Android market, choosing the perfect note taking app for your Android phone has become a non trivial pursuit.

I have compiled a table of features for the popular notepad apps from the Android market, I have put the features that I thought would be useful.

I only tested the free apps, some of the following apps have paid versions which include more features.

Some applications have some other features worth mentioning that are not in the table. Here are some that I found note worthy

3Banana:

It has a good web interface. The web interface can , Barcode, Sign-in using Google account, Location tagging,

AK Notepad:

AK Notepad comes bundled as an uninstallable applications in some of the custom Android ROMs. It is a pretty decent option if all you want to do is take text notes.

ColorNote:

The main USP of this application is that the notes can be color coded and sorted based on the color. Other than that this is a simple app for taking text notes.

Evernote:

Evernote is perhaps the best known name in this list. They don’t have a release version out for Android yet, so I tested the beta version that can be downloaded from their site. Evernote  definitely has best online presence amongst the listed apps. Their desktop app is too good to ignore. If you are a Windows or a Mac user then this is definitely worth a very serious look. Me, I am waiting for them to release a Linux version.

Foxnote:

This application is supposed to sync with Google Docs but I was unable to get it to work.

GDocs:

GDocs integrates pretty well with Google docs. It allows the user to download their documents from Google Docs and edit them. The editing can be done offline. Documents can be created offline and  can later be synced. If you use Google Docs then you should definitely give this application a try.

Note Everything:

This is a feature rich note taking application. Most of the features for which it says “no” in the table are available in the Pro version which has Photo notes, checklists, encryption, reminder etc. I did not try the Pro version.

Note Me:

Note Me has a slightly busy looking interface with lots icons at the bottom of the screen. It has filtering by tags and a send to calendar feature which is similar to the remainder feature that some other apps have.

Notepad:

This is plain vanilla  note taking app, it provides syncing through its own servers at http://pad.helicoid.net

Paint Note:

This is not a normal note taking application. This is meant for taking picture notes. You can open any picture from your album or SD Card, add notes to it and share it using one of the many photo sharing sites. You can also create your own drawings and share them in the same way.

Ultra Notes:

This is another feature rich application. It is one of the few application that support encryption. The home screen, by default, contains a list of folders which can be used to categorise the notes.

Wiki notes:

This is useful for creating wikis, all wiki words (text with more than one capital letter) become links to notes of that title.

Status note:

This is another app which is not a simple note taking app. This puts an editable note in the status bar.

OI Notebook:

Open Intents (OI) have a pretty large suite of apps for Android platform. Their note taking app, OI Notebook, is a pretty decent application. The USP of OI Notebook is that it integrates well with other OI products like OI Voice Notes, OI Safe, providing additional functionality.

Here is a link to a post by Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote, concerning the next round with Evernote.  Personally, I can not tell you how important Evernote is to me!  For me, computers have ALWAYS been about the software.  Evernote is one of those applications that computers were designed for.  Phil and his team have done a great job so far and I really look forward to the next round.

For more on Evernote, you can find it at Evernote.com.  I will tell you that I have been a user since 2007 and a Premium user since 2008.  It is THE best investment I have in my computer – bar none!

I really like Evernote and the more I use it the more I like it.  For anyone who hasn’t used it, Evernote is a free piece of software that allows you to capture notes in a variety of formats and synchronise the electronic notebooks it creates with other machines via ‘the cloud’.  It has lots of other features, but one thing it doesn’t do is templates.

I subscribe to the Evernote group on FriendFeed and a post from Jim Adams highlighted that “I would love to see some basic templates to use for notes. Could the functionality be added or the possibility to create my own?“.  This seemed like a really good idea and whilst I’m sure the Evernote development team will implement a templating system in at least the desktop clients at some point I realised that there is a way to create new notes based on a simple template already.

Okay it isn’t the most elegant of solutions, but I figured that ENScript could be used to insert a text file into Evernote and the text file could effectively be the template.  I posted the details of the ENScript syntax a while ago and so I referred back to this to put together a suitable command.  A simple batch file made a good proof of concept:

This batch file assumes that the enscript.exe file is in the same folder as the batch file or is included in the Windows PATH environment variable.  The /s parameter is the location of a template file (in this case one called ‘template1.txt’).  The /d parameter identifies the location of the Evernote database file.  Additional parameters can also be added for a default title and tags as well as for which notebook the new note should be created in.  When run the batch file inserts the content of the template file into Evernote.  You can then edit the exact content of the new note.

If you wanted to expand this you could produce a batch file and template file for each template or a menu system (using your favourite scripting or programming language) that allows you to select which template file you want to insert.  You could even add a keyboard shortcut to kick the template creation off to make it a more seamless experience … but at the end of the day this is a crude workaround so keep that in mind.

If you’re not a Windows user there’s also an option to automate Evernote using AppleScript on the Mac, but I don’t run Evernote on a Mac so I’ll let someone with a bit more Mac experience set that one out

1. Evernote: Lisämuisti mielellesi

Ylivoimainen ykkönen kaikista ajattelun softa-avuista on runsas vuosi sitten julkaistu muistiinpano-ohjelmisto Evernote. Evernote vaikuttaa ensi silmäyksellä vaatimattomasti digitaaliselta muistivihkolta. Ensivaikutelma kuitenkin pettää. Evernote ei ole mitään vähempää kuin konkreettinen laajennus omalle muistillesi.

Jos haluat muistaa jonkin asian, on yhdentekevää onko muistosi koodattu hippokampukseesi, vai sijaitseeko se internet-pilvessä. Jos saat palautettua asian samassa ajassa mieleesi, ei sen sijainnilla ole käytännössä merkitystä. Evernote on tietääkseni ensimmäinen ohjelmisto, jolla muistiinpanon haun vasteajat ovat parhaimmillaan biologisen muistamisen tasoa, enimmillään muutamia kymmeniä sekunteja. Tämä johtuu kahdesta seikasta.

Ensinnäkin, Evernoteen pääsee käsiksi kaikkialla. Missä vaan, missä pääset nettiin, pääset Evernoteen. Näin muistosi kulkevat mukanasi vaikkapa älykännykässä. Vielä ketterämmin Evernoteen pääset käsiksi, jos satut omistamaan iPhonen, Blackberryn tai Palm Pre:n. Näille älypuhelimille on julkaistu omat Evernote-ohjelmansa.

Toisekseen, Evernoteen pystyy rakentamaan moniulotteisia muistiinpanomatriiseja. Siinä vaiheessa, kun muistiinpanoja on kertynyt tuhansia, voi yksittäisen muistiinpanon palauttaminen avainsanahaulla olla mahdotonta. Mutta toimivan matriisin avulla pääset sekunneissa käsiksi haluamaasi tietoon.

Kirjoitan paraikaa Evernoten ja nettiteknologian käyttöön liittyvää laajennetun mielen opasta, joka ilmestynee viimeistään alkuvuodesta 2010. Siinä esittelen tarkemmin muun muassa, miten tuhansia muistiinpanoja järjestyksessä pitävän matriisin saa rakennettua Evernoteen käden käänteessä.

2. Twitter: Kollektiivinen alitajunta

Myös Twitterin kohdalla ensivaikutelma pettää. Ensi silmäyksellä Twitter vaikuttaa irralliselta Facebookin tilapäivitykseltä, jolla tuntuu olevan käyttöä vain teini-ikäisille kahvitteluseuraa kaipaaville ja Ashton Kutcher -faneille. Tosiasiassa Twitter on kuitenkin yksi hämmästyttävimpiä verkottumistyökaluja, mitä on toistaiseksi keksitty. Oikein säädettynä Twitter toimii fantastisena kollektiivisena alitajuntanasi.

Twitter on täynnä kohinaa – informaatiota, joka on omien elämänongelmiesi kannalta yhdentekevää. Iso ongelma Twitterin käyttämisessä onkin säätää Twitter-tilisi niin, että sinne ilmaantuu pääasiassa vain sellaista informaatiota, joka on juuri sinulle käyttökelpoista. Twitteriin kirjoittavat tuttaviesi lisäksi nimittäin myös lukemattomat maailman huipputekijät. Olit sitten toimihenkilö, kirjailija, sarjakuvataiteilija, rock-muusikko, IT-asiantuntija tai poliitikko, on todennäköistä, että koko joukko hengissä olevia idoleitasi kirjoittaa ajatuksiaan Twitteriin. Tämä tarkoittaa huikeaa jatkuvasti päivittyvää intellektuaalista pääomaa. Eliminoimalla Twitter-kohinan kykenet synnyttämään häikäisevän kollektiivisen alitajunnan, josta saat jatkuvasti uusia ideoita maailman huipputekijöiltä.

Twitter-kohinan eliminointi tarkoittaa sitä, että seuraat ainoastaan sellaisia Twitter-kirjoittajia eli twiittaajia, jotka kirjoittavat jatkuvasti itsellesi aidosti mielenkiintoisista aiheista. Jos siis joku täyttää Twitter-kanavasi turhanaikaisella säpätyksellä, pudota hänet pois tililtäsi. Etsi Twitterin hakutyökalulla omia idoleitasi ja alasi vaikuttajia ja katso, mitä he twiittaavat. Jos informaatio on sinulle hyödyllistä, lisää nämä henkilöt tiliisi. Voit myös selailla netistä löytyviä teemojen mukaan järjestettyjä Twitter-palstoja ja löytää kokonaan uusia itseäsi kiinnostavia Twitter-tuttavuuksia. Aloittaa voit esimerkiksi Twellow-sivustolta. Ajattelun ammattilaisen Twitter-syötteen voit tilata klikkaamalla tästä.

Kannattaa myös kurkata, keitä itseäsi kiinnostavat ihmiset seuraavat – monesti myös he ovat kannaltasi kiinnostavia. Kun keräät tilillesi muutamia tusinoita itseäsi kiinnostavia, aktiivisia twiittaajia, synnytät kollektiivisen alitajunnan, josta saat jatkuvasti uutta, itsellesi ajankohtaista ja merkittävää informaatiota. Tuloksena on häikäisevä virta oivalluksia, linkkejä ja ajankohtaisia uutisia, jotka muut kuulevat vasta kuukausien päästä!

3. iTunes U: Huippuyliopisto kotikatsomossa

Applen iTunes University on fantastinen tiedon aarreaitta. iTunes U:sta voit ladata koneellesi kokonaisia lukuvuoden pituisia luentosarjoja maailman huippuyliopistoista. Vielä kolmisen vuotta sitten tähän oppiin pääsi käsiksi vain pulittamalla satojen tuhansien taalojen lukuvuosimaksut. Tarjolla on luentoja Yalesta, Cambridgesta, UC Berkeleystä, Stanfordista… Filosofiaa, psykologiaa, fysiikkaa, biologiaa, historiaa, taloustiedettä… Luennoitsijat ovat sekä tietotaitonsa että esiintymiskykynsä puolesta huippuluokkaa, ja isolta näytöltä katsottuna videoidut luennot pääsevät hyvin lähelle aitoa oppimistilannetta. Ääniluennot voit puolestasi ladata MP3-soittimeesi vaikkapa juoksulenkille. Kysymyksiä ei virtuaaliyliopistoissa voi tietenkään esittää – mutta kenties voit metsästää mielenkiintoisen luennoitsijan Twitter-tiliisi ja esittää kysymyksesi siellä!

4. iGoogle: Maailman uutiset yhdellä silmäyksellä

Alan Mooren klassikkosarjakuvassa Watchmen maailman fiksuimmaksi mieheksi tituleerattu Ozymandias vietti mielellään aikaa televisioilla peitetyn seinän edessä. Televisiot näyttivät ohjelmaa muutamia sekunteja kerrallaan, ja näin Ozymandias kykeni muodostamaan nopeasti kattavan intuitiivisen käsityksen siitä, mitä maailmalla tapahtuu. Tiettävästi myös Spede Pasanen harrasti samanlaista monen television tuijottelua. Vaikka kymmenien televisiokanavien yhtäaikainen seuraaminen voikin olla ahdistava kokemus, on itse ajatus uutisoinnin kattavasta seuraamisesta kiehtova.

iGoogle on Googlen personalisoitava etusivu. iGoogleen voi asentaa kaikenlaisia härpäkkeitä peleistä Gmail-tiliisi. Erityisen käytännöllinen sivustosta tulee, kun lataat siihen monipuolisesti erilaisia uutispalveluita: Hesari, BBC, CNN, New York Times, Le Monde, Deutsche Welle, Al Jazeera, Fox News, Dagens nyheter… Tällöin näet yhdellä silmäyksellä, mitä maailmalla puhutaan. Silmäiltyäsi otsikot voit lukea tarkemmin itseäsi kiinnostavat jutut. Parhaassa tapauksessa voit seurata uutisointia itseäsi kiinnostavasta aiheesta aina tieteellisiin alkuperäisjulkaisuihin asti. Uutiset kirjoitetaan aina jostakin näkökulmasta; seuraamalla erilaisista lähtökohdista kirjoitettua uutisointia syntyy maailman tapahtumista rikkaampi ja todellisempi kuva kuin vain yhtä valtamediaa seuraamalla.

Lisäksi voit ladata erillisille sivuille itseäsi kiinnostavia blogeja ja uutisportaaleja. Näin pysyt jatkuvasti ajan tasalla siitä, mitä alallasi tapahtuu. Voit tehdä helposti uuden välilehden valitsemalla aihealueen, esimerkiksi “Art”, “Psychology”, “Physics” jne. iGoogle ehdottaa tällöin joukkoa aihepiiriin sopivia gadgettejä. Voit myös toki poistaa tai lisätä gadgettejä mielesi mukaan.

5. Writeroom: Keskity kirjoittamiseesi

Kirjoittaminen on sitä miellyttävämpää, mitä paremmin pystyt keskittymään itse kirjoittamiseen. Writeroom keskittyy olennaiseen: tekstiin ruudulla. Kyseessä on koko ruudun varaava tekstinkäsittelyohjelma, jossa ei ole juuri muita ominaisuuksia. Voit siis keskittyä kirjoittaessasi itse sanomaan ilman, että ruudulle levinneet ikonit ja avoimet ohjelmat varaisivat jatkuvasti huomiokanaviasi, tai ilman että innostuisit leikkimään kirjasimilla tai kikkailemaan muotoiluilla. PC-käyttäjien iloksi ohjelmasta on hiljattain ilmestynyt klooni nimeltä Darkroom. Sen voi ladata täältä.

6. Yep: Artikkelit aina käsillä

Vaikka Applen tietokoneet ovatkin merkittävä stressiä vähentävä tekijä tietotekniikkaa päivittäin käyttäville, pyrin tässä katsauksessa keskittymään ohjelmistoihin, jotka ovat saatavilla sekä Macille että PC:lle. En kuitenkaan ole toistaiseksi törmännyt Yep:in toiminnallisuuteen PC:llä, ja koska kyseessä on niin loistava ohjelmisto kenelle tahansa lukutoukalle, päätin sen tässä nostaa esille.

Yep on PDF-tiedostojen lajitteluohjelma. Se mahdollistaa PDF-tiedostojen seurannan tietokoneella ja monipuolisten tägimatriisien luomisen tiedostoille. Yep:in nerokas tapa käyttää tägejä sopii PDF-tiedostoille kuin nenä päähän: valittuasi kansion, Yep tarjoaa vain niitä tägejä, joita on valitsemassasi kansiossa olevilla tiedostoilla. Näin löydät tuhansien artikkelien, e-kirjojen ja lehtijuttujen joukosta hetkessä haluamasi. PC-käyttäjien onneksi Evernotella pääsee nykyään hyvin lähelle Yep:in toiminnallisuutta, jos kohta aivan yhtä elegantti Evernote ei PDF-tiedostojen käytössä olekaan.

7. Lumosity: Jumppaa aivosi kesäkuntoon

Lumosity on Stanfordin yliopistossa kehitetty erinomainen aivojumppasivusto. Monipuolisesti erilaisia ajatustoimintoja harjoittavat pelit auttavat harjaantumaan esimerkiksi keskittymisessä, muistamisessa ja tilanhahmottamisessa. Sivusto on kuukausimaksullinen, mutta sitä voi kokeilla maksutta. Sivuilla on myös usein täysin maksuttomia yksittäisiä pelejä.

Aivojumppaa kritisoidaan usein siitä, että aivojumppa harjoittaa itse asiassa taitavammaksi vain itse harjoitteessa. Näin lieneekin karkeasti ottaen asian laita. Mutta jos harjoittelet riittävän monipuolisesti, kuten on mahdollista Lumosityn pelien kanssa, on harjoittelusta todennäköisesti hyötyä myös käytännön ajattelutyössä.

メモ書きツールとしてEvernoteを使用してみようと思いアカウントを作成したが、いちいちブラウザでサイトを開くのはバカらしい。クライアントソフトもあるが、Linux版が無かったのでwineでWindows版を入れることにした。

ダウンロードしたら、wineのファイルマネージャを開いて落としたexeをクリックして機動するとインストーラが走り完了。起動してみるが日本語化されていなかったので、このサイトからpatchを入手して実行してみた。

メニューはちゃんと日本語化されている。メモの部分はフォントを指定してあげれば日本語も大丈夫だが、メモタイトルは化けている。

タイトルが化けているのでは不完全ということで、wineのフォントの設定を見直す。このページが役に立つ。

tahoma.ttfとtahomabd.ttfがダメダメらしい。これらを削除したりすれば下のイメージのようにタイトルもちゃんと日本語表示される。（入力も問題ない）

Linux版が正式にでるのが良いのかもしれないが、今のままでも十分使える。メモさえ簡単に書ければそれでいいのだ。（下の画像はタイトルのフォント修正を直す前のイメージ）

Currently my primary note application, it syncs online and there is an iphone application that works well for taking notes on the go. I use it to keep track of movies I want to watch but haven’t got to yet, same with video games, music, TV, comics, and books. Can be also used to store photos, audio and web clips up to 40mb per month for the free version.

Available for Mac OSX and Windows.

It’s all over the high-tech news, so I guess I can’t ignore this one. Evernote is kind of our competitor. Not exactly a competitor, because we are tiny (yet) and Evernote is probably #1 online note-taking software. Indeed, the main competitor for Evernote is Microsoft OneNote. OneNote is huge, but it’s totally locked into Windows platform. Even their upcoming clouded Office 2010 release won’t change that much. Microsoft stuff just doesn’t run well in other browsers. Sharepoint pages still don’t render anywhere except for MSIE. And when we take mobile devices, the browsers is not the best choice for good user experience. iPhone proves that – everyone creates native apps, because browser experience just isn’t that good.

So what we are going to do is to ride on the back of OneNote’s success and expand its reach into all other platforms that are not Windows. We are going to stick to this strategy and eventually displace Evernote as the #1 mobile and online note-taking software. What we don’t want to do is to burn money to embrace the platforms that are past their prime or just never going to be there, like Palm Pre. I won’t name some others to avoid controversy. So good luck to Evernote with burning more cash on the obscure platforms.

I will be posting more about Evernote and other competitors. Let’s consider this post as a disclaimer: we develop MobileNoter, which is a competitor to Evernote and other note-taking software. Thus, whenever I write on the topic, don’t forget that I’m biased.

As a young graphic designer, I was searching for something in order to keep my notes and ideas more organized. I browsed through some designer podcasts in the itunes store and stumbled upon a podcast titled AppClinic. This is a free podcast as most are and I found a piece of free software designed to help you remember ideas and organized notes called Evernote.

Evernote has the ability to keep your ideas and notes organized and give you a range of ways to access them. Evernote can sync to the iPhone and BlackBerry phones and is usable on both Mac and PC platforms which is extremely helpful.

Evernote is free and allows pictures and information to be uploaded from a computer and accessed on your phone. I personally found this fascinating, especially as a student. I now never have to carry a notebook around and worry about losing software notes or links and information.

Evernote is a free download with plenty of space and the option for a small fee for more space for your ideas and notes. Also Firefox users can download a free add on for the web that imports text and images directly into Evernote.

Even if you are not a designer, this can be useful for just about anyone and it will keep you organized.

I had a meeting with our Education Support coordinator today. She is concerned about how we can best meet the needs of a couple of students, currently in year 6, who are moving into year 7 in 2010.

They have some specific needs:

1. While they generally see and understand any notes made on a whiteboard (or equivalent), they find it very difficult to take accurate notes from this (for a variety of reasons).
2. They can be very particular and careful to get everything exactly correct.
3. Limited attention span

They would benefit from:

1. Having their own copy of any notes / diagrams etc generated by the teacher during the lesson.
2. Not needing to make this copy themselves manually
3. Having a clear and logical system to use to store their notes
4. A system where their parents can quickly and easily see these notes to assist with any homework where necessary.

So, the search for a ICT based solution to help them begins. Currently, I’ve got 2 options in mind.

Option 1

The first option originally suggested by our Ed-support coordinator was for each student to have a Mimio style IWB setup, coupled with a netbook computer (like this Dell Latitude 2100).

While this option could probably be quite effectively tailored to tick all the boxes above, I have a few reservations:

1. While each of these items themselves are quite small, when added to already burgeoning school bags it ends up being quite a task to carry these extra items around all day. (Granted, weight savings can be made using digital text books etc.)
2. This is quite a teacher intensive solution. It would require the class teacher to set up the equipment at the beginning and end of each lesson, have the required pens/stylus setup, to be trained… it goes on. Class teachers are under enough pressures already, I’d like this solution to be as unobtrusive as possible.
3. Cost – While I’m yet to actually do the sums, I’m sure this won’t exactly be a cheap solution.

Option 2

This idea came to me while I was taking notes in this meeting using Evernote on my iPhone. I wondered if the students could actually use a camera device to take photos of any notes on the board, then transfer to Evernote. Where, they could store these notes in individual notebooks for each subject.

They could either use this in conjunction with a netbook computer in class, or, download all of their notes to a computer at home.

My vision looks something like this:

1. The students have a connected device with a camera (iPod Touch with a camera would be the perfect solution – why, oh why, Apple, is there not such a thing yet?!!! Anyone know if this would work with a Nano? Other devices – iPhone excluded?)
2. Once the teacher finished their notes (or diagrams, pics etc) on the board, the student takes a snapshot of the board.
3. The pic is synchronised with their Evernote account. (The beauty of this is that text within this picture is searchable in Evernote – awesome!)
4. They have a netbook in class – logged into their Evernote account. As the pic synchronises, they move it to the appropriate notebook, alongside any other work or notes they have taken in class.
5. The parent also has access to their Evernote account, and can keep up to date with their progress.

The downsides:

1. The technology I want to use isn’t yet available! An iPod Touch with a camera would be just perfect for this. I don’t want to suggest iPhone – as this opens a whole new can of worms that we aren’t ready for yet. Are there any alternatives? Could an iPod Nano perhaps be used – if not for no Wi-Fi connectivity or Evernote app.
2. This is a much more student focused solution. We need to investigate the ability of the students to be able to manage this solution. Given the nature of the particular needs of these students, I suspect that they would pick up the technology quite quickly. Managing their notes carefully may require some extra scaffolding.

I think this solution could really work well.

Evernote, a Mountain View, Calif.-based company that makes one of my favorite cross-platform apps, called (what else) Evernote, has raised $10 million in new funding. The new round was led by Morgenthaler Ventures, a respected Sand Hill Road firm with a deep history. Evernote had previously raised $6.5 million in VC funding. Phil Libin, Evernote’s CEO, tells The New York Times that he is going to be using the money to expand to new geographic markets and add new platforms. At present the app works on Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Mac, PC and Palm’s WebOS. As you all know, I am a big fan of the application and its freemium business model. 　外出時にブログなどの原稿やネタを考えるときに重宝しそうです。Webを見ながらメモを取ったりするのに便利ですね。

　web上にある情報を参照しながら、文章を書くというのは、結構面倒な作業です。ましてや、iPhoneだと、アプリケーションの移動が面倒です。

　でも、Evernoteでちょっと工夫するだけで、一つのアプリケーションでWebの情報を参照しながら、メモが書けるというのはすばらしい発見ですね。
さらに、Evernoteからメール送信も出来ますから、これ一つで、ブログの投稿までもっていけるということになります。さっそく、自分のiPhone環境でも試してみようと思います。

I’ve been particularly dense about figuring this out, so, having stumbled upon it, I thought I’d share it with anyone who hasn’t gotten the most out of Evernote—particularly its tagging features. I’m surprised that Evernote doesn’t make more of this. It seems to be buried deep in their documentation, but to me, if I can remember all the parameters, it suddenly makes Evernote a much more powerful beast.

As Mark Stout points out, you can then save a complex search in Evernote and that becomes a filter of its own.

The easiest way to find something is just to type a keyword for it in the search box.

Câți dintre voi își iau notițe în timp ce citesc o carte? Eu am un obicei: subliniez în timp ce citesc și apoi îmi trec notițele. Dar aici apare următoarea problemă. Pe ce treci notițele ? Mă gândeam zilele astea la metoda tradițională cu pix, hârtiuțe, bla bla, dar brusc mi-am adus aminte că eu nu sunt ăla ordonatu care să-și aducă barem aminte unde a pus notițele alea. Eram sigur că îmi trebuie ceva mai bun. Și cum m-am gândit că pc-ul nu e doar pentru messenger, filme și muzică am dat un search pe gugăl pentru un program de notițe. În cam 10 minute am găsit ce îmi doream.

Bun. Acum ce face programu ăsta? Păi îți permite să-ți iei notițe și să le organizezi cum vrei tu. Eu le organizez după taguri. În felul ăsta atunci când caut ceva și lucrez pe un subiect despre care știu că am mai citit câte ceva mi-e foarte ușor să umblu prin ele.

Partea și mai mișto e că au platformă pt ipod touch. Și cum am și eu un gadget d-ăsta mai mereu pe unde mă duc se dovedește extrem de folositor în bibliotecă. Pot să îmi iau notițe și când ajung acasă sincronizez pe wireless evernote-ul cu baza de date online și apoi pe pc. Toate notițele le am apoi pe pc. Mi se pare super tare.

Asta e partea bună. Partea proastă e ca nu dispune de un trafic atât de mare decât dacă plătești. Și totuși, 45 de dolari  pe an nu mi se pare o sumă atât de mare pentru un progrămel atât de util. Oricum dacă vrei să ții baza de date doar pe pc tău nu ai de ce să plătești. Doar dacă sincronizezi cu diferite platforme mobile sau pe diferite calculatoare ai nevoie de trafic mai mare.

Anyway, programul e foarte util și v-il recomand.
