I never promised you a rose garden in the desert…

Recently, The Milwaukee Business Journal posted a Business Pulse Survey asking “Should regional leaders offer free water to lure businesses to southeastern Wisconsin?”  Although the majority of readers voted “NO,” there were still some folks in the area that wondered if “YES” might be an OK answer if the proposed plan contained provisions for the water to be cleaned and returned, and that assurances would be made that our plentiful water in the region would not be depleted by this practice.

In Milwaukee, we have many very talented, resourceful and creative business leaders, who sincerely want to help develop the floundering economic climate in the Milwaukee area.  I’m not trying to take anything away from their goals to bring new businesses to Milwaukee, however, I’m not convinced that this “free water” deal would be a sound, sustainable, long-term solution. 

I’m a member of the Milwaukee 7 Water Council – World Water Hub group and I am passionate about Water.  Working with other individuals, businesses and organizations to keep water plentiful, available, clean and healthy for all of us –  everywhere, not just in Milwaukee, or the “dryer” states in the US, but for everyone in every state, country and continent is an important goal of mine.  To that end, I would not feel that I was acting as a responsible caretaker of our water supply if it were used as a ”free gift” for businesses to move to our area.

When considering this idea further, here are some other thoughts I had:  

What kinds of businesses would/could be lured to Milwaukee by the promise of free water?  If I owned a company that used lots and lots of water, I would accept that offer and move my business here.

Has criteria been set for capacities, cleanliness standards, or the maximum number of companies that Milwaukee could afford to give free water, etc? 

 What if Wisconsin is pulled into the national issue of sending water to Western or Southern states? 

In an article in Salon.com, Bill Richardson, governor of New Mexico  ”…had his region’s plight in mind when he told the Las Vegas Sun that Northern states need to start sharing their water: ‘I want a national water policy. We need a dialogue between states to deal with issues like water conservation, water reuse technology, water delivery and water production. States like Wisconsin are awash in water.’”

 It’s my opinion that Milwaukee’s treasure of “BLUE GOLD” should be carefully watched over by conservative stewardship. I don’t believe it should be given away “free” to lure businesses to the area, or sent via pipeline to drier states. If a business can no longer be sustainable in a dry climate, then the company owner/s should learn more responsible business practices and move the business to the appropriate climate. If that happens to be Milwaukee, then they should pay for their water the same way I pay for it – quarterly! 

I applaud our business leaders for looking for innovative ideas to help the Milwaukee econonomy, but isn’t just advertising the idea that our region does have plentiful water for their businesses a good enough reason to lure them here?

L’organizzazione per i diritti umani Gruppo EveryOne ha depositato alla Procura della Repubblica presso il Tribunale di Pesaro un esposto riguardo alla tragica situazione socio-sanitaria che coinvolge la piccola comunità Rom romena di Pesaro dal marzo 2008 a oggi. Alcuni dei componenti della comunità Rom pesarese soffrivano e soffrono tuttora di gravissime patologie, fra le quali tumori maligni ormai incurabili, epatiti, cardiopatie, patologie da precarietà, handicap della persona. Nell’atto di denuncia, a firma di Roberto Malini, Matteo Pegoraro e Dario Picciau, co-presidenti di EveryOne, si contesta al Comune di Pesaro, e in particolare al Sindaco e agli Assessori alla Sicurezza, alla Salute e alle Politiche Sociali, la mancata assistenza sociale e il mancato soccorso ai membri della suddetta comunità.  Le violazioni ipotizzate dall’organizzazione per i diritti umani sono: abuso di atti di ufficio (ex art. 328 c.p.), lesioni (ex art. 582 c.p) e omissione di soccorso (ex art. 593 c.p).Il Gruppo EveryOne sta notificando in queste ore anche un atto di denuncia urgente nei confronti delle Istituzioni pesaresi presso la Corte Europea dei Diritti dell’Uomo e la Corte Internazionale di Giustizia delle Nazioni Unite. Contemporaneamente, l’organizzazione per i Diritti Umani ha inoltrato una protesta ai vertici del Pd e dell’Idv, partiti i cui esponenti hanno un ruolo importante nelle operazioni di pulizia etnica a Pesaro. “Siamo convinti che né Bersani né Di Pietro siano al corrente degli abusi commessi dal loro sindaco e da un loro assessore. E’ comunque sconcertante che oggi nell’Unione europea,” concludono gli attivisti, “esistano situazioni di persecuzione grave che mettono famiglie vulnerabili e perseguitate, nonché persone gravemente ammalate, in mezzo alla strada in pieno inverno. E’ un segnale che in alcune città la vita umana non conta più niente, se appartiene a una razza sgradita alle Istituzioni e agli intolleranti”.

Although Brittany didnt get to finish her speech, I am sure this generated enormous opportunities to share her faith with many young people and adults.  Praise God for teens like Brittany and I pray that this will inspire some of you to acknowledge and grasp that grand influence you have.  Dont let it slip away from you.  Make a difference!

In the meeting for our pitch last week one of my colleagues said something thats terrorized my vocational nightmares for ages. I’ve managed to supress this source of agony deep in my superego as to not upset my conscious being but with one quick polysyllabic word my nightmares returned fresh to haunt me. The 4-letter word in question: ‘Everyone’.

In marketing, ‘everyone’ is a foul word that should always be approached with extreme caution. Most small businesses (and probably a handful of large business as well) make the mistake of labeling ‘everyone’ as their target market. In the dawn of marketing, products and services were sold based on their physical attributes and what they were. People didn’t buy Model-T Fords because they looked nice, ran smoothly, came in an assortment of colours, and imparted the image of endless wealth and prosperity of its owners (although they might have). People bought them because they took you from point a to point b in a short amount of time on your own convenience. In the 1900s, a bar of soap got rid of all that unsightly dirt and grime from working in the field, the coal mines, the office, or general housework if you were a woman. Soap today still cleans you but not quite the same way it did in the 1900s.

As people and technology have evolved so has marketing. People don’t want cars that just get them from point a to point b. They want a car that gets them there in style, a car that can protect them and their precious cargo or just their regular everyday cargo, a car that can go off-roading, or a car that looks like it can go off-roading, a car that can show off their bank account, or a car that can show that they care about the environment. Consumers today are much different than the consumers of yester-century and anyone that utilises marketing as part of their day-to-day functions has to understand that to be competitive. Consumers today are constantly seeking to identify themselves in this ever-growing world where their existence is increasingly being defined as a number on a card, a tax form, a passport, etc. Mothers don’t stay at home and cook and clean house anymore. Sure some do. But others want to be a soccer mom that’s reliable and dependable and actively engages with her kids, some strive to be the power moms that are successful in the office and in the home, still others want to be the fashionista that can be a mom at all and still look great in any size 2 dress off the rack at Neiman Marcus.

What this is all getting to is that you cannot target ‘everyone’. Everyone has different desires, needs, values, and dreams. This tends to rub those not ‘in-the-know’ the wrong way because for them it means losing profit by not grabbing everyone they can. The problem is this, imagine reaching blindly into a bucket of fried chicken (yes, my American is showing–I know) with a wide open palm, fingers extended out, and trying to pull up as many pieces as possible. It’s unlikely you’ll grab anymore than one and you’ll probably starve to death. However, if you concentrate your efforts on 2 or 3 pieces (depending how hungry you are) you can strategically pull them out with less effort and enjoy a bountiful feast. See how that worked? Now you’re full and satisfied and ready to tackle dessert. People don’t like being talked as part of the crowd, they want to feel they are the only ones in the room and your greasy chicken fingers are only for them. Think about anytime you’ve walked out the grocery store to find a flyer posted under the windscreen wipers of your car and every car around yours and immediately discarded it. Now, think of a time that yours was the only adorned with such papery delights (Well, probably not delights. It was probably a parking citation or an insurance number and some contact details) You read it straightaway didnt you? Hopefully, you did because it was probably important. This is also why spam and emails addressed to several recipients are unpopular. Got it yet? I can’t stress this point enough.

Finding a target market involves figuring out which people would like and will benefit most from your product or service then finding out what makes them tick. You can make it as general or as specific as you’d like but you have to be able to define what that group wants and deliver it to them. Health, wealth, and prosperity do not define a target market either. Arguably, we all want these things, but not everyone wants them the same way.

In the 2000s, there’s a brand of soap for men who want to be more sexually appealing, a soap for men who just want soap, a soap for real women who cherish that beauty is more than skin deep, a soap for the deal-sensitive consumer, there’s even soap for people who need to feel that their social status is defined by their soap. If you’ve made the mistake of trying to target everyone find the soap that suits your values best, wash off that greasy palm and start over. Leave the superfluous poultry pulling for companies like Coca-Cola that segment their targets into broad all-encompassing terms like “the dreamers”, “the live nows”, and “the idealist”.

How easy was that? Ok, now you are there, what can you do? There are several things you can do on this site.

Test taking: General information
To begin with, the site provides general information for four different kinds of examination: admission, licensing, vocational, and primary/secondary.

1. Admission exams are those like the SAT or GRE that are taken as part of your application to college or graduate school.
2. Licensing exams, for example the NCLEX and Praxis exams are required for certification in professions like teaching and nursing. Vocational exams are part of the admissions process for professional schools and the military.
3. Vocational exams are the ASVAB and the HOBET examinations.
4. Primary and secondary school exams are those like the FCAT and the THEA that are taken by students in elementary, middle, and high school. Success on secondary exams can be essential to advancing to the next grade or receiving a high school diploma.
Test taking: Test preparation
You don’t need general information, because you are already familiar with the test that you need to take. You just need to practice for the test. Ok, no worries, this is where the Study Guide Zone Test Directory comes in handy.

Simply click on the name of your exam and you will be taken to a page containing detailed information and links to free preparation materials. For many of the exams, this preparation material includes extensive guidebooks covering every aspect of the examination. Isn’t this fantastic?
