Ready for some more dual-GPU madness, only this time in the resplendent green of NVIDIA? EVGA has go

Ready for some more dual-GPU madness, only this time in the resplendent green of NVIDIA? EVGA has gone and concocted a special Halloween edition of the GTX 275, which has sprouted an entire GTS 250 appendage solely for PhysX gruntwork. Dubbed a new form of Hybrid SLI, EVGA’s latest combines — for the first time, from what we can tell — two different GPUs and assigns them with specific and mutually exclusive tasks. Whether this concept takes off will depend to a large extent on the effectiveness of PhysX acceleration and whether it can show more efficient scaling than regular old SLI with two boards or more conventional dual-GPU setups like the GTX 295. Color us intrigued, either way.

P.S. – That’s what the actual card will look like, we’re not making it up.

EVGA has always been a great upgrade card because they manufacture quality items at very good prices. This card is no exception. The installation is easy only taking up 1 PCIe x16 slot. There is small fan just over the processor. The memory is only DDR2 which is ample for most games. The really nice part is that this card allows older machines to catch up to Direct X 10. I tried it with Vista 64 and it installed just fine. I also tried it with Vista 32 and had no issues. I did not try it with XP.

In the continuing story of my hardware woes, I ordered and installed a new motherboard. Things went

In the continuing story of my hardware woes, I ordered and installed a new motherboard. Things went splendidly from there, and the install of Vista 64-bit went 200% more smoothly than the install in my previous entry – the batch updates worked this time, leading me to believe that there was more wrong with the other motherboard than just the freezes and lockups…

Unfortunately, a new problem has presented itself: whenever I fire up a graphics-intensive application (say, Quake Live or Sins of a Solar Empire), the application crashes and Vista gives me the following error message:

“Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.”

In doing some searching around, it seemed that this is a pretty widespread problem without any solutions. I’ve already contacted EVGA support (who, with the installation of my newest motherboard, are now the manufacturers of both my graphics cards and my motherboard…so why I’m having graphics issues is absolutely beyond my comprehension) and so far they’ve been less than helpful, giving me the usual litany of suggestions: update Windows, update your nVidia driver, are your cards defective, blah blah blah.

So let’s do a differential, shall we?

Windows Vista 64-bit: No. Before installing the new mainboard but after installing Vista 64-bit the first time, I ran Quake Live without any problems. The problems only cropped up after installing the new mainboard.

EVGA Motherboard: Could be. This is, after all, the only thing that has changed. I’ve installed all the drivers for the mainboard, even updated the BIOS. No change.

EVGA Graphics Cards: Very doubtful. I’ve tested both independently, and the problem is present with either one. And the prospect that I somehow damaged both cards in swapping them between motherboards is statistically nonexistent. Furthermore, I used one of EVGA’s own diagnostic tools to scale way back on the cards’ clock speeds. If the cards were the problem, this should have produced a change – there was literally 0 improvement.

Software Driver: Most likely. I performed a test where I completely uninstalled the nVidia display driver, then tried to play Quake Live. I turned down all the video settings to their lowest and ran in the lowest possible resolution. It was still very choppy, and the sound skipped, but I was able to play. No crashes. It’s most likely an incompatibility between the nVidia driver and the motherboard (though this makes no logistic sense whatsoever…EVGA made the motherboard, and the video cards).

The only other possibility I came across in my online scavenger hunts was memory. I hard-set the timings for my RAM in the BIOS, but realized I forgot to specify the voltage. Everest monitoring indicated my memory’s voltage hovered around 1.9V, which is about 0.2V lower than my memory’s technical specs indicate. I’m going to test hard-setting the voltage, but I’m not optimistic (EDIT: testing this yielded no change, as expected).

Also, does anyone know what the voltages for the Northbridge should be? I figure I should hard-set that as well.

Yeah. Upshot: IT sucks. Never ever ever ever will I go into the industry, if I can help it. I always feel like this cat whenever I’m troubleshooting computer problems:

About a month ago, I finally decided that it was time to upgrade the Kaz Arts computer station . It

About a month ago, I finally decided that it was time to upgrade the Kaz Arts computer station . It had been a long time since I had kept up with computer technology (since about the last time I built a machine 6 years ago) and didn’t quite know where to begin. So, what better place to go to for answers? Good ‘ole dad, the electrical engineer and all around electronic and mechanical genius. Which leads into an interesting story…

Ten years ago, Kaz Arts (as it is known today) began as a customized computer consulting business. My father and I were very much into computers and technology and we spec’ed out, designed, and put together computers for high-end video-editing, graphics use, and computer gamers. One of our clients, a photographer, had asked if I knew how to use the Adobe Photoshop program. As an early adopter of digital capture, I had been using Adobe Photoshop since version 3.0. So I began training him in Adobe Photoshop, he spread the word to his friends, and the business sort of took off from there. And here we are today…doing & teaching all aspects of photography, image processing, and image reproduction.

Back to the story of the computer now. My father offered his suggestions, and I mixed-and-matched components with what fit into my *budget* for the building of this machine. As with anything in life, things will always cost more and take longer than you always initially think they will. But that was fine, as I foresee using this machine for as long as my previous machine was in use (6 years). Here’s the general spec sheet:

This machine is insanely fast. Boot time on the machine is less than 30 seconds from power button until the Windows desktop is ‘ready’. The machine is only used for photography and imaging, so it is only connected to the internet when I need to download Lightroom or Photoshop updates. Speaking of Photoshop and Lightroom, I have never seen any machine run these programs so quickly. I don’t even see the Photoshop opening splash screen when I double click the icon. I click and I see my workspace. The Lightroom spot retouch tool now works without the hassle of waiting for the mask to ‘refresh’ between clicks. It functions the way it is intende to work – like a paintbrush!

HDR, panorama stitching? No longer necessary to go make a cup of coffee or go have lunch. 8 14-bit Nikon NEF files into a photo-stitch merge: 1 minute 24 seconds.

In case you are interested, we still build custom machines. Including all parts and assembly, a machine like this would run $2500+tax. Can you purchase a Mac this powerful for anywhere close to that amount of money? Doubtful.

This is in no way an advertisement for Microsoft…but “I’m a PC”. I am not a fan of Vista, but I do want 64-bit architecture support (I know XP has 64-bit, but why go backwards?), and I look forward to Windows 7.

EVGA recently came out with the InterView 1700, a dual screen display system with two rotatable 17″ TFT LCD displays. Each super-thin 17″ TFT LCD display provides a 1440 x 900 resolution and they can both be pivoted in almost any angle. The screens rotate 180 degrees on a horizontal axis, allowing viewers to see what is on the screen at the same time while being on opposite ends of a desk. The monitor also comes with dual keyboards and mouse, giving you the chance to take turns playing around with whatever you have on screen. It also comes with a built in 1.3 megapixel webcam, microphone and 3 USB ports. I definitely could have used this when working with my junior’s!

This is the Equivelent to a system as seen on here. Alienware.com

The alienware x58 desktop offers this setup (which is close) for 2,049.00

The alienware does not offer the GTX275 card, so its hard to get a good price range so i chose the 4870×2 option, due to it being the same price on newegg as the gtx275’s. I also did not put in a cd/dvd drive due to it being like 25$ for one, so i left it out of the price war. U can buy an Alienware chasis with a 750w psu with the glow for 199$ off their site, so oviously their not selling very many of these systems anymore.

Also alienware uses very very low quality products in their machines, and if its a name brand product they make you pay full retail for it even tho its just an upgrade. like going from a 500gig hd to the velociraptor SSD which i have in my list above, added an extra 300$ whereas u can seee the VR SSD is only 179.99…

Sure you get a warranty with it, but if you go to your localy Owned PC repair shop, alot of times if you have them order the parts and have them build it, they will warranty it for you. Of course they will charge you 50-80$ an hour to build your machine, but it shouldnt take more then 1-2 hours for them to do so. Also Alot of products I’ve listed have lifetime Waraanties, so your covered by all angles.

Also if you notice, all the products above are the highest end of the series you can get. I did this to prove a point to people reading this. You can save 10-20% off that final price of mine if you just get the same product but a lower model.

Example, the GTX275 i posted costs 329.99 you can get a lower end GTX275 from here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187073&cm_re=gtx275-_-14-187-073-_-Product For 219.99 which would cut off 110$ right there.

The RAM is also high end you could go with something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148247 which is 50$ less

so u can save 160$ by just getting 2 of the same item, just different brands. Same goes for the hard-drives, you can lower it down to a single 1tb drive that costs 89.99 and save 330$

The mother board is overkill to the max as well for the everday gamer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188046&cm_re=evga_x58-_-13-188-046-_-Product Thats 258$ which is 200$ cheaper then the 4 way sli board

so in theory right there u can get RAM that is pretty decent, and a decent GPU and a single 1tb drive instead of what i suggested and a mobo that supports 3 way sli and save yourself 690$ which bring the price down to $1,502.

You can EASILY overclock that i7 920 to 3.5-4.0ghz with that coolermaster v-10 i suggested as well. http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/477151-how-overclock-i7-920-a.html gives instructions.

I hope this was very informative about how YOU can save money by buying your own Hardware for your next gaming rig purchase!

—-Sltrhouse—-

I wrote this as i was helping my friend compare price-quality ratio

Im running currently a machine that costed me about 2400$ all together so far.

1tb hdd http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148373 99.99$

intel i7 940 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115201 559.99$

Vista Home Premium 64 bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116488 99.99$

LG 22x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136152 24.99$

EVGA 3way sli http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188039 299.99$

ASUS GTX295 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121296 509.99$

CoolMax 950watt psu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817159072 119.99$

Arctic Silver 5 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007 6.99$

OCZ gold 6gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365 130.99$

Order Total $1,891.59 (i only paid 15.69 for 3 day shipping i found alot of free shipping deals) Thats just for that stuff lol

I got my coolermaster HAF932 case from liquidcpu.com for 150$ and i got my coolermaster hyper CPU cooler from them for i believe 59.99$ so thats another 220$ or so with shipping.

then heres my little mod stuff…

120mm red led fan x7 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811998123 45.43

12 inch Red cold cathode http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16800888027 4.99

so the total was 74.02 (shipping was 20 :/ )

my headset was 99.99$ keyboard was 109.99$ and my mouse was 59.99 so thats another 270$ or so…

so close to 2,500$ with the wireless card and whatnot as well….

ANWAYS I believe this guide will really help people understand how much money is really invested into gaming machines, and to understand that its a big choice to lay down a few thousand bucks on something that MIGHT NOT work… I’ve had zero problems so far with my pc so imo it was 2500 well spent, and i used my tax refund for it so its a win win.

I would always suggest to get the mid range of hardware, due to it being the most reliable, and also go talk with your local geek squad, or just go to a forum online and im sure you’ll find help.

EVGA’s InterView display is a pretty interesting one. As you can see above, it’s a dual-monitor. Both monitors are 17-inches and you can use it in extra-wide mode for 34-inches of screen estate. Unfortunately, the resolution of the displays are only 1,440 x 990, so that’s a slight let down. The inputs on the back are VGA and DVI, so you’ll need two if you want to use both monitors for one PC. The EVGA InterView is now shipping for as low as $624.99 USD. Check out Buy.com for one of best deals out there.

Nvidia said Monday that Intel and a bevy of circuit board makers have licensed Nvidia graphics technology for future Intel chips.

The leading graphics chip supplier for game PCs has licensed its Scalable Link Interface (SLI) technology to Intel and makers of PC motherboards, including Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI for future Intel chips. SLI is a technology for linking two or more graphics boards and used typically in high-end gaming boxes.

The licensing deal will allow Intel and others to offer SLI technology in “P55″ motherboards that are used with Intel Core i7 and i5 processors. The latter series of processors have yet to ship. A motherboard is the main circuit board in a PC.

Nvidia said this is significant because Intel is licensing the technology before it rolls out new chips, a departure from how SLI licensing was worked out earlier this year between the two companies.

“What’s exciting is that Intel signed on before the launch (of new chips). Before, they came on after the launch,” said Nvidia spokesman Brian Del Rizzo. “This makes it easier for system builders and OEMs (PC makers),” he said.

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over!

Computer problems are plaguing me. This is an open appeal for assistance in diagnosing the problem.

After 2 months away from my gaming rig, I returned, plugged it in, and powered it on. Fails to boot into Vista. Try again, fails. I re-install Vista, no problems. I download the new 190.38 drivers from nVidia, now EVE freezes my system entirely. I run a MEMTEST and it freezes my system. I remove that stick of RAM, no more RAM issues.

I think I have solved the problem, but no. EVE still crashes. So I revert my drivers and things seem in the clear at the moment. When EVE crashes again, if it does, I will let everyone know However, I now have the problem you see in the picture. Asteroids are little white dots that blink in and out like an old set of lights still on 3 weeks after Christmas. Woe as me! So, why won’t my RAM work, why are UFO sightings appearing in a game with UFOs, and why the hell won’t my coffee maker work? It’s like 2001 waited to get me…

System:

Windows Vista 32 bit

4 GB (2 x 2) Corsair XMS 2 6400 800mHZ 4-4-4-12, 2.1v ver 1.1

eVGA 780i SLI Mobo

eVGA 260 GTX

Mobo Settings for RAM are currently 5-5-5-18, 1.8v, AUTO for mHZ (displays as 800 in Bios).

nVidia 186.18 driver, dates 17 June 09.

Complete Problem History:

Windows Vista freezes on boot

Windows Vista then freezes after log-in

Re-Install Vista

Computer fails to make it past BIOS testing, restarts itself. Memory error displayed

Run MEMTest, freezes Vista, remove that stick of RAM

Fire up EVE, freezes after 5 minutes

Change timers on RAM to correspond with times printed on RAM, 4-4-4-12, v 2.1, UNLINKED 800mHZ. BSOD, Memory Dump. Revert BIOS to default.

System boots, open EVE, EVE freezes within 5 minutes.

Revert drivers, playing now for 30 mins.

So it’s been a while since I last posted a video or anything. Well if you’ve been paying atention thus far here’s the update. since the last video we’ve all gotten our Faction Battleships. Even a strategic cruiser and if you know us by now they would never see a war. We’ve since gotten new memebers and So Cash is slowly growing but what really sucks is that just mining a belt got us war dek’d yet again. Some people in Eve suffer a complex where they believe no one should be mining and that you should only buy your minerals but if everyone were to follow that logic there would be no minerals. Some people also have very unstable and crazy religions that they like to spill into the local like everyone cares or something. Owell, I got my gaming rig back so it’s not like I care. Sure if everyone in the corp wanted to fight we would but everyone is doing their own things so we are hardly worried about the time and money (That’s not ours) being wasted. Just gives me more time to skill for Cruisers 5.

When I do get everything on this Pc squared away you can expect Higher Quality videos and more. It just sucks that as soon as I get the Pc my mic breaks from transportation. And to think you were just able to hear me finally in that last video. Owell. Eve on everyone.
