Gameweek 14 reaches us as we start the middle third of the season. Week 13 saw few surprises though we did get the highest ever individual score. I made the error of having Fabregas as captain which I didn’t especially feel comfortable with but didn’t have many other options with Lampard and Drogba out injured, and Rooney out of form.

I did have David Dunn but didn’t fancy him due to two away games. In the event he proved me wrong. I regret not bringing in Bullard or Dempsey as I was looking at both pre-deadline. Sometimes it’s better to take the four point hit for the rewards it can bring. Don’t even get me started on having Thomas Sorensen’s 14 points left on the bench…

Gameweek 13 Top Gun (aka Tom Cruise Approves):

When I was looking back over the top scores from last week, I had a moment of panic when I thought there was a three-way 18 point tie for 1^st and I’d have to find another Top Gun character to join Maverick and Goose.

Then I remembered that someone called Jermain Defoe scored five goals against Wigan. Yes, the pint-sized striker scored a full handful of goals and picked up three bonus points. It might just be me but it almost feels like 25 points isn’t enough reward for such a feat. I guess that’s what happens with just four points for a striker’s goal. I’m sure the people who had him as captain weren’t complaining – 50 points was only two off my whole total for the week. Anyway, it’s the highest score ever from one game, even Ronaldo never got that.

As mentioned previously, following Defoe you had Dempsey Hunt and Lennon all with 18 points. The former two took advantage of playing twice while Lennon was the provider of three Defoe goals as well as getting one for himself in that 9-1 victory. A mention too for Michael Essien who scored 16 via two goals and his third man of the match award of the season.

Maverick should really be using all five hand digits to approve of Defoe's performance.

Three Captain Choices:

1. Adebayor/Man City – Every run has to come to an end and I think Man City might finally stop their run of six consecutive draws and beat Hull at home. Hull have picked up since Bullard’s return with two wins and a draw but they’re still leaky at the back while Adebayor scored his first goal in two months against Liverpool. He tends to feast on weaker defences, get bonus points when City play well and thus is a good shout for captain this weekend.

2. Drogba/Chelsea – The best defence faces the best attack this weekend as Chelsea face Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday. Normally I wouldn’t suggest picking someone from this fixture but Drogba loves playing Arsenal and has terrorised them down the years. What scares me even more is that due to Gallas being doubtful, there’s a tiny, tiny chance we might see Big Phil Senderos make an appearance. I’m shuddering at the thought, Drogba owns him.

3. Rooney/Man Utd – Portsmouth at Fratton Park. Slightly trickier now that Pompey have Avram Grant newly installed but Rooney and Man Utd should still have more than enough to beat Portsmouth.

Gets a Captain's tick.

Three suggested transfers in:

1. Evra/Man Utd - The French left back has been putting together a good season and in his last few games has picked up and assist and three bonus points. Man Utd should be good for a clean sheet against Portsmouth and after that Man Utd face West Ham, Villa, Wolves and Fulham which should provide a few more opportunities.

2. Johnson or Dann/Birmingham - I’m sure many of you already Joe Hart in your team but why not add Roger Johnson or Scott Dann to your side too? The two centre backs were a newly formed partnership at the start of the season having both been signed from Championship clubs but have adapted to the Premier League well. Johnson is the pricier of the two and more likely to get bonus points but Dann is just £3.9m leaving you plenty of case for elsewhere.

3. Hunt/Hull - Some people’s form rating is skewed by one massive week whereas others are a bit more consistent. If Bullard is out of your price range then Stephen Hunt is a good option having scored five points or more in four of the last five gameweeks.

Might be worth a pick.

Three to avoid:

1. Everton players - They were woeful against Hull and have generally struggled this season. There have been bright spots like Baines and Saha but they have a tough three games (Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea) coming up and then no fixture in week 17. Avoid for now.

2. Gibbs/Arsenal – Just as soon as he was becoming a cheap option while Clichy was out, he breaks a metatarsal and is now out for three months.

3. Owen/Man Utd - Just 24 points so far. The goal against Man City is literally the single good thing he’s done this season. Diouf, N’Gog and Ghilas all have more points. Having said that, what better opponent than Portsmouth to prove me wrong.

Lima tahun terakhir, Manchester United dan Chelsea adalah dua penguasa Liga Inggris. Berstatus juara bertahan, “Setan Merah” merasa The Blues adalah ujian terbesar melanjutan dominasi.

Dalam hal trofi yang sudah dikumpulkan, Liverpool memang menjadi seteru terberat MU. Tapi karena Chelsea dalam beberapa musim terakhir menjadi pesaing utama, The Blues jadi ancaman nyata saat kembali berhadapan akhir pekan ini.

France have surprisingly omitted Captain Patrick Vieira for their double encounter against Ireland. Coach Raymond Domenech decided to cut Vieira because he has not been a regular in the Inter team. Vieira has only appeared nine times for Inter in all competition. Domenech has an aura of doing his business in a mysterious way and he has striked once again by picking two uncapped players, Girondins Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso and Olympique Lyon defender Aly Cissokho. France will be travel to Ireland with familiar faces like Nicolas Anelka, Abou Diaby, Patrice Evra and Thierry Henry.

Ireland was unbeaten in their group and that’s a positive sign going into the match against France. Wayne Rooney vuole assolutamente giocare domenica, ma Sir Alex Ferguson non è ancora certo che il numero 10 dello United e il suo compagno Darren Fletcher stiano bene.

Rooney non è sceso in campo contro Bolton e CSKA Mosca, la scorsa settimana , per via di un infortunio al polpaccio , mentre Fletcher ha perso le stesse partite per un colpo preso a un piede.

PATRICE EVRA is predicting a Euro showdown with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid.

The Manchester United left-back is convinced fate will see him face old pal Ronaldo in the Champions League this season.

Evra said: “I know we will play Real Madrid. I can’t explain it. It is just a feeling.

“But I think we will play them, maybe even in the next round.”

Evra is confident he would be able to shackle Ronaldo, who made an £80million world-record move to Real from United in the summer.

He added: “I once played against him in an Under-21 international but remember, I used to face him every day in training.

“He knows it could be very difficult for him.

“Ronaldo was a close friend and I was sad to see him leave. But you need to accept it.

Aujourd’hui, nous nous attaquons à un domaine que notre sélectionneur préféré n’apprécie pas tellement : la défense, le véritable casse tête de Domenech depuis la fin de la Coupe du Monde 2006…

Clichy : On commence par nos exilés anglais. Tout d’abord Gaël Clichy. Le Gunners n’arrive pas à tenir sa place en équipe de France. Il est pourtant régulièrement appelé par Raymond Domenech. Seulement voilà, la concurrence est rude pour l’arrière gauche. En effet Patrice Evra, le Mancunien, lui barre la route pour l’instant. Cependant, le Français, du haut de ses 24 ans, a déjà réalisé une bien belle carrière. En effet, il est devenu un titulaire régulier à Arsenal, et fait, pour l’instant, un bon début de saison à l’image de son club. Ainsi le bilan des joueurs d’Arsène Wenger est moyen en championnat avec 3 victoires et 2 défaites mais meilleur en Ligue des Champions : 2 victoires en autant de matches joués. Le Gunners s’est récemment exprimé devant les journalistes à Clairefontaine et a avoué que l’équipe de France avait pu jouer les matchs de qualification avec « le frein à main » à cause de la pression. Une chose est sûre, si Raymond donne sa chance à Gaël, notre frenchi ne jouera pas avec « le frein à main » !

Gallas : Si il y en a qui n’a pas à s’en faire c’est Gallas. Le Gunners est un des rares joueurs que Raymond Domenech garde à la même place depuis quelques années maintenant. La place du Français en défense centrale est maintenant indiscutable et le débat sur la charnière s’oriente maintenant sur la question : « Qui pour jouer avec Gallas ? », pour vous dire l’importance du joueur d’Arsenal. Dans son club, le défenseur semble être tout à fait à sa place. Gallas devrait rencontrer sous peu les dirigeants du club londonien pour parler d’une éventuelle prolongation de contrat et, pourquoi pas, d’une éventuelle fin de carrière aux côtés d’Arsène Wenger. Le conflit de l’année dernière qui avait coûté au défenseur son brassard de capitaine est bel et bien oublié. Samedi, Willy sera là et mercredi, aussi !

Sagna : Le latéral droit est en constante progression depuis son départ d’Auxerre en 2007, année où le jeune Bakary a connu sa première sélection avec l’équipe de France A. Il est depuis quelques temps, régulièrement appelé en EDF et est titularisé par Raymond Domenech qui semble avoir placé sa confiance en lui en ce qui concerne la partie droite de la défense française. Le sélectionneur national doit, en effet, apprécier les montées du jeune français sur son flanc droit, habitude qu’il a prise avec Arsène Wenger. Bakary sera sûrement titulaire samedi. Une occasion de plus pour montrer la suprématie des Gunners en équipe de France.

Evra : C’est sans pression que Patrice Evra a retrouvé les siens à Clairefontaine pour le stage précédant la rencontre contre les Iles Féroé, samedi. Le latéral gauche français est titulaire tous les samedis en Première League. Ajoutez à ça une titularisation régulière en défense en équipe de France et vous aurez une idée de la vie de l’ancien Monégasque. En effet, le petit Patrice a bien évolué depuis la finale de League des Champions perdu contre Porto en 2004. Le latéral gauche est devenu un atout important dans l’équipe de Sir Alex Ferguson comme en témoigne son but samedi dernier contre Sunderland qui évita aux siens de se retrouver à 3 points des Blues d’Ancelotti au classement. Si le français pouvait aussi sauver l’équipe de France, ce serait avec plaisir !

Escudé: Même si son nom rime avec, personne n’est sur que Domenech arrivera un jour à totalement excuser Escudé pour son but contre son camp et sa mauvaise prestation lors du dernier match des Bleus contre la Roumanie… Quand on connaît les conséquences des bourdes de Mexés face à l’Autriche en septembre 2008, on a déjà du mal à se dire que SI, Domenech a tout de même appelé Escudé… Après s’il le fait jouer, ah ça oui Raymond, tu nous auras surpris ! En club, Escudé n’a pour l’instant joué que trois matchs, mais il a su mettre au pas les attaquants du Real la semaine dernière, ça mérite une bonne note non ?

Abidal : Autrefois titulaire indiscutable, Abidal n’avait pas pensé qu’il perdrait si facilement sa place ! Ses performances moyennes avec le FCB l’ont directement reconduit au poste de numéro 2 sur le couloir gauche derrière Patrice Evra. Une question malgré tout subsiste encore quant à l’ancien Lyonnais : a-t’il les qualités nécessaires pour jouer en charnière avec Gallas dans l’axe ? Est-il finalement la solution qui permettrait à la défense française de tenir en place, pour une fois ? Il nous faudra encore voir quelques matchs où il occupera ce poste pour pouvoir répondre à cette question. En ce moment, Abidal réussit quand même un bon voir très bon début de saison avec le Barça… Un retour à la normal pour Eric ?

Rod Fanni : Quand on est jeune, qu’on a envie d’apprendre et que le monde du football connaît notre talent, jouer au stade Rennais est une bonne chose. En effet, le club Breton est très clair. Cette saison, avec son nouvel entraîneur, Rennes veut gravir des échelons ! Et si aujourd’hui Rennes est une équipe à qui il est difficile de mettre des buts, Rod Fanni n’y est pas pour rien ! Un bon début de championnat pour lui et son équipe, et le voilà de nouveau sélectionné en EDF ! Même s’il risque de devoir attendre pour être titulaire fixe, Rod avance, à son rythme.

Squilacci : Nombreux sont ceux qui pensent que Squillaci est le troisième défenseur dont l’équipe de France a besoin … J’avoue (Albertine) en faire partie. Souvent appelé par Domenech, le défenseur a l’habitude de cirer le banc de touche accompagné de Ribéry et Benzema. Pourtant, Sébastien réalise de très belles saisons en Espagne. Denier bon match avec ses coéquipiers la victoire contre les Galactiques du Real de Madrid dimanche dernier. Souvent associé avec Escudé en défense, Squilacci est globalement bon avec son club. Pour tout son travail effectué ses dernières années à Lyon et à Séville, Squillaci mériterait sa place …

Ser correspondente deve ser legal mesmo, mas o melhor emprego do mundo – da perspectiva de um viciado em futebol – é sem sombra de dúvidas o do senhor Fabio Capello.

Neste fim de semana o técnico da seleção inglesa esteve em 4 estádios diferentes acompanhando partidas da Premier League. E não foram joguinhos quaisquer.

No sábado Capello visitou o noroeste inglês. Foi a Bolton assistir a partida do time local contra o Tottenham. Jogo pra lá de emocionante que terminou empatado em 2 X 2.

Logo depois o técnico do English Team estava no Old Trafford vendo Manchester United X Sunderland. Mas se o sábado já havia sido bom, o que falar do domingo?

Primeiramente Capello teve a oportunidade de acompanhar a melhor partida do fim de semana, Arsenal 6 X 2 Blacburn Rovers no Emirates Stadium, com direito a show dos comandados de Arsène Wenger. O passeio dos Gunners foi 6 X 2, mas não é nenhum exagero dizer que poderia ter sido 10 x 4 ou 11 X 5. Detalhe, 8 gols marcados por 8 jogadores diferentes, eu nunca havia visto algo assim. Jogo histórico, inesquecível! E tenho quase certeza que o treinador da seleção inglesa se lamentou demais por Cesc Fabregas ser espanhol, que maturidade aos 22 anos, que grande craque!

Fabio Capello saiu do Emirates e se dirigiu ao Stamford Bridge para assistir o clássico Chelsea X Liverpool. Mais uma grande partida que terminou com a vitória da equipe londrina por 2 X 0 com gols dos franceses Anelka e Malouda. E excepcional apresentação do ebúrneo Didier Drogba.

Pra muita gente o fim de semana de Fabio Capello pode parecer um martírio, sábado e domingo trabalhando, viagens e tal. Mas pra mim, um viciado em futebol, este fim de semana mais parece um sonho. Não bastasse, hoje à tarde provavelmente ele estará em Birmingham pra mais uma partida que promete, Aston Villa X Manchester City que fecha a rodada da Premier League.

Da onipresença do Capello fica um ensinamento; técnico de seleção tem que viver em estádio. É só no campo que se vê um jogo em sua perfeição. O treinador anão da nossa seleção por exemplo, raramente é visto nos estádios do Brasil e da Europa. É por esta e por outras que o English Team é meu favorito pra levar a Copa de 2010.

Lo United è riuscito a conquistare un punto pur avendo giocato male, stando alle parole di Sir Alex, che si è detto contrariato per l’imprecisione dei Reds nei passaggi e la mancanza di creatività negli ultimi venti metri.

L’autogol di Anton Ferdinand sul tiro di Patrice Evra al 92’ è valso il pareggio, ma non è bastato a soddisfare Sir Alex. “Abbiamo raddrizzato una partita giocata male,” ha dichiarato a MUTV. “I passaggi non sono stati quelli che mi aspetto che faccia la squadra durante tutto l’incontro. Abbiamo cercato di cambiare le cose inserendo Anderson nella ripresa ma abbiamo continuato a perdere palla.”

Darren Bent aveva portato in vantaggio il Sunderland dopo soli sette minuti e lo United non è entrato in partita nel primo tempo. Rinvigoriti nel secondo dall’ingresso di Anderson, i Reds sono riusciti a pareggiare grazie al gol di Dimitar Berbatov.

“E’ stato un grandissimo gol,” ha esclamato il boss. “Fatto quello, ho pensato che ci fossimo rimessi in carreggiata. Pensavo che avremmo sicuramente vinto. Lo slancio c’era, il tifo pure, sembrava fatta. Ma poi abbiamo concesso un gol davvero troppo facilmente. Però onore ai giocatori, non si arrendono mai. E’ un’ottima qualità. Abbiamo ottenuto qualcosa da una partita giocata davvero male.”

Lo spunto di Evra, poi, ci ha dato un grande sollievo. “Certo, siamo stati un po’ fortunati nell’occasione, ma Patrice ha fatto un gran bel tiro,” ha aggiunto Sir Alex. “L’ha messo in porta e si aspettava che entrasse.”

“Chiaramente avrebbe potuto essere una sconfitta dolorosa. Dà sempre fastidio non vincere le partite in casa. Non ci siamo procurati molte occasioni durante l’incontro e pensavo che per quel che stavamo facendo negli ultimi metri non saremmo riusciti a crearne. Diciamo che è stato come un giorno di vacanza. A volte capitano, non ci piacciono ma capitano.”

I went to Old Trafford on Wednesday night to watch Manchester United come from behind to claim a 2-1 win over German champions Wolfsburg in the Champions League.

Had a great time, I was accompanied by 3 lovely ladies Laura, Sophie and Barn on the day. We left Surry at 1pm so we could make it to Manchester in good time. The journey took around 5 hours but actually flew by! Barn provided the catering for the journey which included a fine selection of Hula Hoops, Strawberry Pencils and jam doughnuts! Nice one Barn! Laura provided us with real-time updates regarding her work and Sophie showed us all how to use an iPhone the ‘special’ way, it was “golden Comedy”! My contribution was the name game which introduced the much loved ‘Chavvy Chase’ and the Legend that is ‘Marti Chello’ (my mum loves that guy!).

When we arrived at Old Trafford we we’re shown to our ‘Executive Box Seats’ courtesy of Laura aka. ‘The Hen’. Thank you, they were amazing!

The game had a slow start but once Wolfsburg scored the opener it soon developed into a decent game. The star of the show was most probably Ryan Giggs, he managed to get us back in the game with a deflected free kick. He also set up Michael Carrick to score a screamer and treated the crowd to some of his iconic weaving runs. Giggs’s goals means he has reached yet another milestone, making him only the ninth player to score 150 goals in a United shirt.

The only thing that put a dampener on the evening was the injury to Michael Owen but I still believe he will be a success at United.

Other standout performances on the night were from Evra, Anderson and Berbatov.

Patrice Evra admits May’s Champions League final defeat still haunts him.Despite helping the Reds to a third consecutive league title and victory in both the Club World Cup and Carling Cup, the Frenchman says the overriding memory of 2008/09 is disappointment.

“I’m a winner – I like to win – so I still think about what happened in Rome,” he told ManUtd.com.

“Everybody says we did well last season and we won three trophies, but when you lose the final in the manner we did – we didn’t give a true account of ourselves – it’s very frustrating.

“We didn’t show people the real Manchester United and we were very upset with ourselves. We missed a big opportunity in Rome and that’s a real shame. It killed all my dreams last year.”

United begin the 2009/10 European campaign on Tuesday night against Turkish champions Besiktas and Patrice admits he’ll draw on last season’s experience to motivate him in Istanbul.

“When I think about last season now I don’t think about winning the league or the Club World Cup or the Carling Cup: all I think about is losing in Rome and that’s made me very determined to do well this year and make up for that.

“But that doesn’t mean my focus is only on the Champions League – my

ambition is for the team to do well, no matter what competition we’re in.”

Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra has revealed that last year’s Champions League final defeat to Barcelona still lurks at the back of his mind, a source of motivation for success in this year’s competition. United open their European campaign tonight with a trip to Turkey to face Besiktas, and Evra is set on putting last year’s failure right.

Deux grands européens vingt-deux joueurs de haut niveau, deux coachs hors du commun. C’est Manchester United – Arsenal.

Arsenal semble avoir retrouvé sa force qui faisait la sienne il y a un an avec un allant qui en impressionna plus d’un. Un Gallas affuté et une recrue Vermaelen qui disputa son premier gros match anglais qui fut plutôt positif, seul bémols du côté Gunners, l’absence de Fabregas le récent capitaine qui risque de perturber l’entre jeu londoniens. Alors que les adversaires du jour essaieront de faire oublier Christiano Ronaldo, avec peut-être le jeune Nani qui prendra la relève. Le premier “Crunch” de la saison, le premier duel du Big-Four c’est maintenant …

Arsenal ouvra le score, quelques minutes après un oublie de penalty sur Arshavin, le ciel a rendu justice , 1 – 0 pour Arsenal à la mi-temps, scénario parfait, et voila qu’une seconde mi-temp débute , celle-ci sera celle de Manchester. Tout d’abord une faute provoquée par toutes l’intelligence de  Rooney, Almunia est contraint a faire faute, penalty , 1 – 1 entre temps les gunners touche la transversale sur bijoux de coup franc de Van Persie. A 25 minutes de la fin de ce match, Abou Diaby marque contre son camp sur un coup franc de Giggs. Le match change totalement d’âme, après avoir vu des rouges et blancs maitrisés ce match ,les reds reprennent le match en main domine, tant pas la gnac de leurs attaquants ou par l’intelligence d’un Evra ou encore d’un Vidic, le buteur malheureux réessaiera de se rependre quelques secondes après son erreur mais Abou Diaby rata le cadre. 94° minutes de jeux et Van Persie marque, Wenger jubile mais non le but sera refusé pour une position de hors-jeux (justement sifflé).

Manchester gagne trois points ou Arsenal en perd trois, comme si Arsenal n’etait incapable de maitrisé un match. Ca ne vous rappelle pas quelque chose ? Certainement le début de saison dernière ou encore il y a un an quand Arsenal vit sans Henry ou le titre se perd dans les dernières journées . Et si Arsenal avait une équipe de Gamin comme disais Evra ?? Il semblerait que cette déclaration tant décriée s’avérait exact. Quoi qu’il arrive un grand très grand match de football s’est déroulé ce samedi. On pourra noté malheureusement l’expulsion d’Arsene Wenger, qui a protesté sur le but refusé pour hors-jeux, dommage…
