As empresas calculam que a instalação das usinas eólicas em alto mar pode custar cerca de 57 bilhões de euros

A meta é ambiciosa: fazer com que um quinto da energia consumida na União Europeia em 2020 venha de fontes renováveis.

A medida tem como propósito reduzir o uso de petróleo importado, carvão e gás na produção de energia e, dessa forma, diminuir a emissão de substâncias que provocam o efeito estufa.

Diante do desafio, a European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), organização que representa empresas instaladas em 60 países, propõe a construção de usinas de energia eólica em alto mar, ao custo de 57 bilhões de euros.

A EWEA garante que a força do vento é capaz de gerar 16% de toda a energia necessária para a União Europeia – ou um terço de toda eletricidade consumida – em 2020.

A indústria já tem a tecnologia e a bola estaria agora nas mãos dos governos da EU, que financiariam a construção das usinas na costa europeia ao longo de 20 anos.

Segundo a associação, a energia eólica poderia substituir a energia produzida nas velhas termoelétricas à base de carvão e acompanhar a crescente demanda no continente.

Além dos 57 bilhões de euros iniciais para a instalação das usinas, seriam necessários outros 30 bilhões de euros para conectá-las às redes elétricas dos países.

Europe looks set to build slightly more wind capacity this year than in 2008, despite weakening electricity demand due to the economic crisis, the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) said. About 8,600 megawatts of new wind energy capacity will be installed in the European Union’s 27 nations in 2009, 1 percent higher than the 8,484 megawatts installed last year, EWEA estimated. EWEA expects the financial crisis to have a deeper impact in 2010 due to poor liquidity in the loan markets. New wind installations will take the EU’s cumulative capacity to 73,535 megawatts this year, up from 64,935 megawatts last year.

Too many, it seems, prefer the ‘Analysis to Paralysis’ approach to green events. They perform exhausted reviews of every detail until, battered and forlorn, they retreat to their traditional planning methods feeling that sustainable events are too difficult. Anja Wimmer, Senior Event Manager and Luisa Coll Hellyer, of the European Wind Energy Association provide a healthy example for any planner with such afflictions of mental paralysis.

When considering the myriad of decisions in planning EWEC2009, their annual event, they took action in practical ways. They measured their event using MeetGreen , engaged their suppliers with codes of conduct and on site interviews, (full disclosure: we provided this support!), made firm requests for recycling, chose a logistics supplier that recycled 18,220sqm of exhibition space carpet, requested locally produced F&B from a stellar supplier, and started a dialogue of sustainability in the host community, Marseille.

By taking an approach of “constant improvement” instead of “perfect the first time” they left a legacy of sustainable awareness in the city of Marseille, France. They took action and are event industry stars for the impressive efforts and investments they made. Thank you Anja and Luisa for being a great example
