I’ve mentioned Trey Ratcliff before, and I’m going to do it again.  Trey is an Austinite who does some incredible HDR work, which if you have not seen, you need to check out.  He is now making strides in the area of video, using a much forgotten Casio EX-F1.  This camera shoots video at up to 1200 frames per second.  When this camera hit the market earlier this year I had the same thought as Trey; shoot at high speed, 300+ frames per second then slow it down for playback.

Trey outlines the entire principle and mechanics on his Stuck in Motion page, which also has a couple smaple videos that you have to check out.  This trick of course has been around in the film industry for years, but the technology has not been available to the general public, until the Casio hit the streets.  Of course the camera never got much press or sales due to the price, and the fact that most couldn’t envision a use for high speed frame capture.

For the most part the videos look very ordinary, like a high speed capture slowed down, but the coolness factor plays in when the situation changes to a fast moving camera position and slow moving subject.  Watch for the train station shots in the video and the freeze motion effect it has on the subjects.

Another interior shot of a gatehouse at Fort Rodd Hill. Again, this shows how HDR can balance interior and exterior lighting. Note subtle variations of light on the stove, the wall above the door, the ceiling and under the windows. Kinda blown out through the gate, but the room was dark and it was full sun coming through there. That ray was blown in all five exposures. No flash used here, of course.

For the last several years I have been fascinated with high speed photography.  Even rental of equipment capable of higher than 60fps has been cost prohibitive for me.  With casio releasing one of the first consumer high speed video cameras, I couldnt resist jumping on the opportunity to experiment more with the format.  This blogs purpose is to showcase whatever I can manage to capture thats worth sharing.

Well-meaning graffitist tagged the upper corner of the huge mirror in my apartment’s stairwell.

This is my new favorite possession: The Casio Ex-F1. I had to shop around every Wolf Camera in the city to find a non-imported one, but I found it and I love it. It’s not the perfect still camera, but it’s better than anything I’ve ever had or even hoped for, plus a high-speed, high-def camcorder in one package to boot. Check out the high-speed in action:

So, what goodies has CES 2008 brought us this year? If you still haven’t had the chance to read up on the show that brings us the latest in tech or simply enjoy rereading stories (as do I), this is a very brief highlight of some of the new arrivals. 

Panasonic’s 150-inch plasma HDTV   

If you thought your 50-inch HDTV was big, wait till you see this. 150 inches?! When I first got my 50 inch HDTV, I thought it was huge! I now look at my tv and stare at the wasted space lingering on the sides and on top.   

SanDisk’s Sansa Clip 

Being a shuffle fan, I must admit,  just from looking at the pics and specs, I like SanDisk’s new Sansa Clip a lot.  Weighing in at 4GB, sporting an OLED screen that seems to just float on the surface, voice recording, FM radio, plus it’s price tag of a mere $80 (the same price as Apple’s 1GB Shuffle) makes Sansa’s clip a very nice deal. Not to mention, the silver mirror-like sheen on this thing is beautiful. Could this finally be a worthy opponent to Apple’s latest gen shuffle? 

Casio EXILIM Pro EX-F1

This camera right here, this is the real deal. Casio’s new Pro EX-F1 boasts a whopping 60 shots per second in burst mode! PLUS, an amazing 1200 frames per second of video. Dreams my friend, apparently do come true.

Here they come, the convergence cameras (still/video). Casio’s EX-F1 is apparently shipping. No idea if it’s any good, but it will be fun for the person who wants it all and wants the latest thing.
