Think outside the box for exercise opportunities—soup can weights, for instance, or...

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! If you stayed within your calorie range for the day, stand up and take a bow. (Is anybody standing??) If, like me, you went into the day knowing you’d exceed your goal, that’s ok. Just start from here and resume your plan. (It’s kind of like the miracle of repentance: you can be forgiven at any point, put the “sin” behind you, and start fresh from where you are!)

So today, if you’re ready to exercise some of those calories away but the weather’s just not conducive, here are some ideas that will allow you to rev up indoors:

1. You don’t have to go out and buy weights to help you build muscle. Instead, use whatever you have around the house: soup, vegetable or fruit cans (yes, FULL!), water bottles—whatever’s a comfortable weight for your strength level. Use progressively heavier ones as your capacity expands.

2. Pop a DVD or video into the player and exercise along to an established routine. (Note: The public library loans video recordings for FREE!)

3. You might want to think about a gym membership for the winter months. Money a problem? Check unlikely facilities. Here in my home town, a nursing home opens its fitness center to the public for a pittance (about $15 a month). Contact me if you’re local and need more details.

4. Hit the mall. Many open at 6 am for folks who need a warm, dry place to walk.

5. If you have an indoor pool in your area, swim.

So there are five tips to keep you going. If you’d like to share your ideas, please feel free to comment. ’Til tomorrow, stay strong and resolute! I’m proud of your progress!

This week’s Is That Really a Thing?! The problem with restaurants these days is that they skim

This week’s Is That Really a Thing?!

The problem with restaurants these days is that they skimp on portions. You pay ten bucks for a sandwich, which turns out to be two pieces of white bread and a slice of bologna. That’s obviously an exaggeration, but you know what I mean.

That’s why I am thrilled to discover that some restaurants are doing something to break the status quo.

You know, I can’t remember the last time I left a restaurant fully satisfied with my meal. I’ve always felt there was something missing… you know, like a 182-lb burger. Yeah, that would really hit the spot!

Enter this bad-mamma-jamma monstrosity (pictured right). Welcome to America, land of the 12.7% population living under the poverty level, juxtaposed alongside excess that has out-gluttoned itself so many times that we have now resorted to making GIGANTIC FOOD as a way to entertain ourselves.

It seems that, once again, we’ve become bored with our already conspicuous consumerism. It’s kind of like Hugh Hefner; think about it. A man has a relationship with a woman, and after awhile, he wants to trade her in for a “newer model.” So he finds a younger woman and feels satisfied; that is, until she ages a few years and he’s bored again. And so the process continues, and it just keeps getting more and more ridiculous because this guy is like 83, dating 20-year-olds.

Seriously? 182-lb burger? The unfortunate outcome of novelties such as this is that somewhere, sometime, some dumbass is going to try to eat the whole thing. He’ll probably die trying, and then his family will sue the restaurant and the whole beef industry. Come on, you know it always happens.

It makes me cringe to think of how many of the homeless people in downtown Tulsa could be fed with 182 pounds of meat, or a 100-foot hot dog, or 57-gallon drum of ice cream.

America is Hugh Hefner, and this burger represents one of the many “newer models” that are sure to emerge in time.

Well after months of trying to hide it, I’ve decided to just confess. Surprise! I like a pop s

Well after months of trying to hide it, I’ve decided to just confess.

Surprise! I like a pop star. The surprise actually may be mostly to myself; as well you all know, I am a self-affirmed snob when it comes to music, and as such, I tend to hold an extreme bias against pop music. Especially mainstream pop music. This is because the majority of current pop “musicians” probably think of musical instruments as fashion accessories (clarinets: the new chihuahuas for the rich and brainless), and I imagine if you asked them to “arpeggiate in the key of E” they would either just stare, dumbfounded until you slapped them out of it, or assume it was something obscene and eagerly attempt to cooperate, drooling in anticipation over the controversial music video reviews.

And YET- against all odds, a pop star has seduced me. And she’s not some random, off the main path artist. She’s huge. She’s exorbitant. She’s indulgent and she’s everywhere. She is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta- and we all know her as Lady Gaga.

So I’m sure you’re wondering, what’s the deal? Why did I choose to bestow my hard-earned affection on this particular pop star and yet scorn nearly every other pop artist within a stone’s throw? For one thing, she actually writes her own songs. Unbelievable right? And her lyrics are actually interesting! It’s a rare thing that I find something worthwhile or relate-able in a pop song, but I actually like what she is saying! Although I usually find electronic style music grating, annoying, even dreadful, something about her appeals to me. Her vocals are compelling enough to keep me interested in spite of the lack of real musical sounds- and in fact, she writes the melodies herself on piano or synthesizer. Her name is a retro throwback to Queen’s “Radio Ga-Ga”- gotta respect someone who loves the Mercury.

I’m not going to pretend that I’m running out to buy her albums. But I do like her music videos- they are bizarre, intriguing, artistic and unique. Lady Gaga is the personification of something that I find compulsively attractive- she is extreme, exaggerated, excessive, extravagant. I love the nasty depravity of it. She is like Las Vegas in a musical package. There is a sick and twisted part of my nature that is drawn to this kind of thing like a moth to a flame; it wouldn’t be effective if she weren’t talented, but the fact is- she can sing, she can dance, and she’s weird enough to fascinate me.

So, props to you Lady Gaga- of all the pop acts out there, I hate you the least- in fact, I may even love you- a very little bit.

The video that made me Gaga:

On an icy winter night, a diamond-bedecked young woman in a ball dress passed rapidly through the streets of St. Petersburg in an open sleigh. Who could have identified this madwoman with a boy belonging to one of the most respectable families in town?

Dressed to kill

Who indeed? Felix Yusupov, said boy, was a Russian prince from a stupendously wealthy family, born in 1887 and best remembered for his role in the 1916 assassination of Rasputin, which precipitated his departure from Russia. With the revolution in the following year Yusupov was permanently severed him from his homeland.

In the early 20th century, however, Yusupov treated the decline of the Romanov era as his own personal burlesque, recounted in his hilarious, disturbing, selectively candid autobiography Lost Splendour, exhibit A in the case of Peasantry v Nobility.

Bona drag!

Yusupov was the ultimate irresponsible son of privilege. His mother, certain that Felix would be a girl, dressed him accordingly until he was five. When being pushed along the street he would menacingly ask strangers, “look, isn’t Baby pretty?”

Soon Yusupov was indulging his own costume fantasies. An early prank was to disguise himself as a Sultan, with the Arab servants in his retinue as slaves and his beloved French bulldog Gugusse dolled up as an old whore.

Felix and Gugusse

A later vignette finds Yusupov at 12 in a restaurant dressed as a woman, drunk on champagne, flinging pearls at nearby diners. Being found out by his parents as a café singer in drag a few years later didn’t stop his further dress-up escapades, such as attending a St Petersburg opera ball as Richelieu in a flowing cape, “its train carried by two little Negroes”, or the Bal des Quat’z Arts in Paris, dressed in one of Nijinksy’s stage costumes (lent to him by Diaghilev).

Once in exile, the man who had embodied the excess and callousness of the ruling elite returned to what he knew best – frocks. He and his wife Irina, niece of the last Tsar, founded the couture house Irfé in 1924, but despite a promising start it soon foundered. In 1928 Janet Flanner, the New Yorker’s long-time Paris correspondent, noted the closure of Irfé’s London outlet and was already calling Yusupov “one of the most tragic, unromantic figures of the Slavic refugee colony.”

Felix and Irina

The house shut its doors in 1931, but the A-list assassin remained an object of curiosity in high society, and an aggressive litigant whenever he felt his role in Rasputin’s murder was misrepresented.

Yusupov died in Paris in 1967, but 40 years later came an unusual coda to his short-lived fashion enterprise. With the rise of free-spending resource-rich Russians, and prompted by renewed interest in the country’s imperial heritage, Irfé was relaunched in Moscow (or GasVegas, as it is sometimes known).

And so Rasputin’s killer has finally returned to GasPutin’s Russia.

With the holiday season, and the other big changes looming in my life, I have found myself being mor

With the holiday season, and the other big changes looming in my life, I have found myself being more and more reflective. I think that’s natural for all of us this time of year, Christmas is such a big event in the year, it seems built to be a milestone we track.

Now I know it may seem odd to be writing about Christmas this early, but for me, I try to enjoy the holiday season as much as I can. And to be honest, although its a calendar month and a few extra days, christmas is really only 3 cheques away. Which I know will go by fast.

For me a lot has changed since last Christmas. Last year, I was living in Edmonton with four roommates. Now individually I got along with all of them, but as we approached a year all bunked together, the stress was piling on. There were simply too many people, living way to cheek to jowl. As well, there was a sense of resentment, in that all of us had traditions and decorations we loved, but were putting on hold in order to live together cheaply. I had yet to meet my fiancee, and as a bachelor that year I was finding Christmas to be an incredibly lonely season. As a romantic, there is too much to enjoy in the snow and festivities, and I am thankful to be having that this year.

As the season approaches, I am lucky to have Shannon, my fiancee, in my life. She has made the preparations seem much simpler, sometimes by just being a voice to listen and give advice. As we were shopping for our tree, it was relaxed and fun, with time for toys and checking out things for other wishlists, and I realized that I had been putting too much of an onus on myself for Christmas. As the eldest son of a single mother, I grew up helping out as I could (not that my brothers didn’t, but I often helped out more out of a sense of duty than want), and this added a lot of stress to the proceedings. My mother has spent too many years doing without, or shopping in October to do christmas dinner and food, and all the rest of it. So often I felt like a failure for being unable to match the contribution, or for being able to only do presents, but not pay for the food. Christmas at my mom’s has always been a feast, with the oven on from morning till night.

Now with Shannon, and the marriage coming soon, I have begun to envision our own holidays. I have always loved friends and family around; and in an ideal world, I think Shannon and I would love to host Christmas. I would love to have a house full of laughter, food, drink and games. But as I find out more and more about her family’s christmas, I realize my family celebrates excess, and hers togetherness more.

Her family has made me realize that alot of the spirit of the holiday is having an open door, welcoming to all, but understanding of the time constraints. As a couple for the first time, we are juggling two towns for the holidays, and an uncertain work schedule. For me, the simple acceptance of my mother in law about this has been amazing. And very inspiring, I hope that this year will be the last we feast like kings, and that for next year games and conversation and such will be more of the focus; not an unending parade of food and sweets.

Our tree is up, the holiday shopping list is written, and I find myself less worried about the money I put under the tree, or that I may not have enough to help with dinner and presents, something I have tried but failed to do the last few years. This year I am going to take the time to smell the cookies, listen for the bells and sounds of the holidays as they begin to play soon, and bring what I can to the table. It has taken awhile for the idea to sink in, but my fiancee has definitely helped, and I can’t wait for the snow and merriment to arrive.

Very very very very well written! Its just too much Pritish Nandy - The Times of India, Nov 17 2009

Very very very very well written!

Its just too much
Pritish Nandy - The Times of India, Nov 17 2009

We live in the Age of Excess and no one knows this better than the Americans. The recession may have hurt them and toned down their extravagance a bit, but they are still a nation that consumes more and lives a richer, more flamboyant lifestyle than any other nation in the world. As any environmentalist or social scientist will tell you disapprovingly, the world cant afford another America. It will simply collapse.
But even though no one can quite match Americas excess, the world aspires to it. They see it as development, growth, progress. Thats why every nation, including us and our neighbours, the Chinese frugal by history and instinct now want to become modern by emulating the Great American Dream. You see it in all that we do these days. We are raising 100-storey towers even though we know how unreliable our builders are in terms of using the right building material and technology to ensure their safety and security.
Wherever you look, new vertical townships are coming up without adequate infrastructure like electricity, roads, water, public transport to support them. The idea is simply to build, build, build, in the hope people and prosperity will grow at a fast enough pace to buy into them. Thats why we measure our success and well-being in terms of GDP growth without worrying about the price we pay for it.
Look at simple things and you will know exactly what i mean. The humble pizza has grown more fanciful. The even humbler dosa, once the vegetarians favourite, is now sporting an incredible number of variants, from meat to oysters and snails. The poor mans rolls are becoming bigger, fatter, with more bizarre fillings. Nothings what it once was.
Its not just food. Have you seen how Indian weddings have grown in recent times Have you noticed how much people have begun to spend on them, even in the smaller towns of India Bollywood movies flaunt their budgets. Fashion designers show off their price tags. Malls, till recently, were parading luxury retail brands till the economic slowdown forced many of them to downsize or shut down. Even magazines have become fatter than they ever were. Computers and cellphones are offering so much memory and so many more features that you can spend a decade learning how to use all of them.
Airports are increasingly looking like townships, offering everything from hotel rooms to spas to movie theatres to hundreds of dining options. Movie theatres offer you anything from dinner to a bed with warm blankets . Offices are no longer just workplaces. They have gyms, pool tables , basketball courts, libraries, auditoriums to watch movies, and creches for working mothers.
Choice is the argument proffered for excess . But does excess really help you make a better choice or does it make it tougher, so much so that we have to hire middlemen for assistance How many of us can file our income tax returns on our own or see our assessment through How many can any more take a simple OTC drug and hope to cure a flu attack How many can decide which life insurance plan to buy
Whats the result Even our most basic needs are getting more complex. Our expectations are rising and we are killing ourselves to meet these expectations . Excess is taking over our lives. Look at the kids on TV. Look at models on the ramps. Look at clothes on the racks, fine dining menu cards, bathroom accessories , jewellery shop displays. Bookshops no longer sell just books. Cake shops no longer just sell cakes. Music shops no longer sell just music. Just as life is no longer only about living and marriage is no longer just about love. That would sound terribly boring, wouldnt it in todays larger than life world

The writer is a media entrepreneur.

Many teenagers are all too aware of what Acne is, just incase you have forgotten, or just blocked the whole experience out of your memory, acne is an inflamed skin condition. It is so damaging for the lives of teenagers because it appears as hundreds of spots on their face, and also on upper body parts. This condition does not only affect teenagers however.

People think that the excess secretion of oils by the skin glands causes acne, which is actually an inflammation of the sebaceous glands and the follicles of the hair. Though almost everyone experiences some form of acne during some time of their life, acne varies in form, appearance and severity from person to person.

As we have already mentioned acne is caused by the excess secretion of oil. The hormone androgen is responsible for the amount of oil secreted by our body tissues, therefore the underlying reason for acne could be an excess of androgen. Acne is categorized into different types, Juvenile Acne, Acne Vulgarias, Chronic Acne, Pickers Acne, Cosmetic and fringe Acne, Body Acne and Back Acne.

Acne is not particularly threatening, it is just a skin disorder that normally clears up all by itself. Therefore it does not usually require any costly medical treatments. Most outbreaks of mild acne can be treated successfully by applying some remedies in the comfort of your own home:

First you need a good Acne Cleanser, Milk of Magnesia is one such product that is available on the market. This is one of the best known cleansers that helps clear up excess oil, hopefully resolving your acne problem. The solution should be applied to the affected area, and left for around 10 minutes, then it should be rinsed off with warm water. This procedure removes any excess oil from your skin and also unclogs the pores of your skin, normally relieving most forms of mild acne.

Then you should look at removing blackheads, blackheads and acne go hand in hand with one another. Removal of these black heads is a necessary step in the treatment of Acne and for this applying a product like Epsom salt could be considered. A teaspoon of Epsom salt is dissolved in some warm water, this makes a solution which should be amply applied to the affected areas using cotton wool. These solutions help in the easy removal of blackheads.

Lastly you should look at preventing any infections. Acne becomes inflamed, and very sensitive to the touch. It is very important to consider the inflammation, sensitivity and tenderness of the affected areas when treating acne at home. For this add 2 to 3 drops of Tr. of Benzion in a cup of cold water, this solution should then be applied to the affected area and rinsed off with cold water. This is a well known antibacterial solution and so this effectively prevents and cures any minor infections in the affected areas.

If your form of acne is serious then it is best to go to visit your doctor to get it sorted out. If you ever experience any discomfort when using any of these home remedies then it is important to stop using them and consult your doctor.

In today’s society, there is a premium placed on looking your best. It has been proven in study after study that those that look good have a better chance of success. Does it have something to do with the confidence that comes with looking your best? Do they receive special treatment? Possibly a little bit of both. Regardless of the reason, the fact remains, it is important to look your best.

With the hectic schedules that many people keep, it can be difficult to find time to exercise. If you’re not in the habit of exercising, there is a good chance that you’ve packed on a few pounds over the years. One popular solution to this problem is the phenomenon of liposuction.

Most people have heard of liposuction (or lipo) but do you really know what it is? Do you really understand what is going on at the cosmetic surgery clinic? Is it an option for you? Let’s look at a few aspects of liposuction in greater detail.

Liposuction isn’t the most complex of surgeries in the medical community. The first thing the doctor must do is cut a small incision in the skin. It’s usually very small. Then they stick a tiny tube known as a cannula into the fat. They then turn on the vacuum that is attached to the cannula and suck out the fat. The fat comes out in little pieces through the tube. This is where they get the ’suction’ part of liposuction.

Many people confuse liposuction with a tummy tuck. However, these are not the same procedure. Sometimes they go together, but lipo is the more popular alternative in today’s culture. Liposuction actually removes the fat. Belly fat can be very hard to get rid of. In these cases lipo is clearly the best option.

A tummy tuck is used when there is excess skin hanging. The excess skin is removed and therefore tightened up. After liposuction, the skin naturally shrinks and tightens up on its own. Therefore, a tummy tuck is usually not needed. However, in some cases, it is still necessary. The surgeries can be combined to get rid of the fat and the excess skin. This is most needed when the patient has gotten rid of a large amount of fat. Those that get rid of a few hundred pounds of fat will probably need a tummy tuck as well. The skin would take a long time to shrink that much on its own.

Liposuction is relatively safe and harmless. There aren’t very many possible issues that can occur as a result of this surgery. You just suck out the fat and get rid of it. It’s pretty cut and dry. Even with few potential complications, you need to make sure that this is the right choice for you. Remember that unless you change the lifestyle that got you there, the fat will come back. Otherwise, it is only a temporary solution to a lifelong problem. You need to decide to change for the better.

So the last in our quartet of venturesome Swiss folk this week is writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach, who died this day in 1942.

Schwarzenbach was wild, troubled and beautiful – a “ravaged angel” in the words of novelist Thomas Mann. Like her compatriot Isabelle Eberhardt (whom we met on Friday), she was always more comfortable in men’s clothes, and likewise possessed of a raging wanderlust. She pursued a Tintin-esque existence from the nightclubs of Weimar Berlin to the treacherous shadows of Stalin’s Moscow, from occupied Eritrea to America’s segregated South. A string of lovers, including American author Carson McCullers, were captivated by her boyish allure; adventure and intrigue followed at her heels as faithfully as Snowy.

While battling morphine, alcohol, love and other addictions Schwarzenbach wrote and photographed her impressions. She herself was extraordinarily photogenic; numerous images from her wanderings depict her kitted out as a between-the-wars gentleman traveller of independent means – booted, suited and modishly coiffed.

Schwarzenbach’s death was a threefold tragedy. Firstly, at 34 she was much too young. Second, the cause — falling from a bicycle in her native Switzerland— seemed like a bad punchline to a life which had been lived with such passion and courage in the furthest corners of the world. After all, Schwarzenbach’s idea of a country drive was to drive across whole countries, most memorably a journey which saw her motoring from Geneva to Kabul. To Kabul.

And lastly, after years of battling drug and alcohol problems Schwarzenbach was just starting to get her shit, as they say, together. She had survived a suicide attempt the previous year and seemed to have turned a corner. But in the end she died alone, her possessive mother having instructed the clinic not to admit friends. As Schwarzenbach herself once wrote, “a lonely death is the symbol of a lonely life.”

Curiously, almost a half century later another drug-addled mitteleuropa beauty, singer and actress Nico, would like Schwarzenbach meet her demise not through the needle but rather after embarking on a health kick, during which she fell from a bicycle.

A single tree standing in the entrance to a modern Tokyo house provides a marvelous contrast between the traditional and the new. The beauty of the single tree and the clean lines of the boxy concrete home create a uniquely Japanese feeling, or what I introduced recently as wafu modern (和風モダン) in relation to Kuma Kenga’s new Nezu Museum and tea house.

The intricately pruned pine tree evokes hundreds of years of Japanese garden design almost single-handedly. The pairing suggests a forward-looking aesthetic that remembers and revitalizes traditional culture elements.

From an ecological perspective, the single tree and minimal shrubs provides very little habitat. This quiet cul-de-sac suffers a typical Tokyo over-abundance of pavement, which is a certain pathway to Tokyo Bay pollution from storm runoff and an obstacle to insect and plant life that could feed and shelter bees, birds and other urban wildlife.

Still, the effect of the tree is all the more dramatic against the excess of hardscape. I also would regret if urban ecology became a quantitative calculation of efficiencies and benefits. There must be a place for not only traditional culture but also the type of human care and aesthetic appreciation manifest in this stylized pine tree.

I’ve always tried to teach my kids about the importance of giving to others. I started this process when they were very young. I used to tell them that they had a lot of toys and would encourage them to give some away to the thrift store. I would tell them how giving some of their toys away would help needy children.

At the same time, I was also trying to teach them to be frugal and teach them the value of a dollar. If we weren’t using something or wanted to upgrade, I would sell our stuff on eBay. If we shopped at the thrift store, I would give them a budget. So Joe, who in his own ‘Joe’ kind of way would go around telling people, “Yeah, I’m helping needy kids by selling my toys to them.”

Although ‘tinselectomy’ is not a new concept for our family, it’s needs to be a more important part of our lives. I’m excited to be a part of this movement! Become a fan of tinselectomy on Facebook!

Significant action needed to avoid horniness-inspired mayhem

The following is the intro to my just-published fake news article on Humor Volcano:

Recent population statistics have scared the pee out of Chinese government officials. The very fabric of Chinese society faces potential disaster because the male/female birthrate imbalance over the past 20 years has exploded into a current shortage of 32 million women. As that staggering penis-possessing population preponderance reaches reproductive age with no possibility of finding marriageable spouses, the resulting rampant unsatisfied horniness could lead these Chinese men into utter mayhem.

Indeed, keeping those 32 million hopelessly single men from going berserk and destroying the country from within is the Chinese government’s most urgent problem. As a result, several proposals, all controversial and previously considered unthinkable, now seem nearly certain to gain legal sanction in order to ward off such penis-led madness.

According to the Chinese Copulation Control Council….

In a land far away, in a time long ago, there was a man who had enough and had he not just enough, but to excess had he. His hours were long, his toils sincere, and his earnings quite dear. He ate well, he lived well, and he slept well. For this was a man with enough to spare and did he, with others share. For this, he was well regarded by his brethren, kin and neighbor, too. Even his foes kept a fond distance, for they were few and their character untrue, with only the cowardice of envy to spare. And so, the man slept well and he lived well.

It was common in those times, as in times now, for like to live by like. And so it happened that in a dwelling nearby lived a second man, well to do as he was. This man, too, had more than enough, enough even to excess. He ate well and he lived well, but he did not sleep well. Though his hours were likewise long, his toils were not sincere. The wind hums in question, how were his earnings dear? With cunning and not without conniving, this second man pondered and plotted his hours away. He left his toils to others near, that they may have reason not to stray. And stray they did not, their fear keeping them near. His foes were neither few and ever nearer they drew. Respect for this man fell away; in its place, stood only their contempt. And so, the second man, though he lived seemingly well, did not sleep so well.

It was true in those times, as in times now, that where a mountain stands tall, a valley lays nearby. And so it were that a third man lived not so far from the first and second men. But though he ate well enough, he did not live well and he did not sleep well. His toils were many and his hours even more. And whilst he would utter not such words, it was for the second man that he toiled so. Neither foe had he, nor friends with which to be. His hours filled with anger true and one part angst, and toil alone did he. And so, the third man did not sleep well, because he did not live well.

It was inevitable in those days, as in days of now, that where the sun shines upon a tree, never the land below is a golden ray to see. And so there was a fourth man, who served below all the others. Of excess and its meaning he understood not, knowing it to be a thing only that he lacked. His toil was not much, his time of rest neither more. For his hours were long and he never knew when, if, it would end. Foes he had not; for nothing did they fear nor more was there to envy dear. Friends were likewise few, too afraid of filth to stand even near. He ate not well, and by no man’s standard did he live well. But he did sleep well. With little to weigh him down and not a regret to hold him back, only the night was his friend, ever to return and always to keep him until the morn. And so, the fourth man did not live well, but he slept so very well.

With a heavy heart do we toil away what otherwise would we idle, or with light heart shall we rest when the day has met its end and bids farewell the eve.

This story of four men is but a tale of two: two ways to eat, two ways to sleep, and keeping true –there are but two ways to live.

Traditionally, people like the holidays. I firmly believe that we continue these traditions because

Traditionally, people like the holidays. I firmly believe that we continue these traditions because there are truly people out there that love celebrating with their loved ones over food, drinks, and good conversation. There is no way we, as Americans, would participate in a holiday over and over if it brought us no pleasure. That being said, I used to love holidays. Honestly, they were the highlight of my year, however, as time goes by and my family expands I find it harder to see the pleasure in the day. Sure, I am extremely happy with the thought over spending time with certain people but when you grown up with 4 older brothers (one being a half sibling) and a younger sister that just HAS to do everything bigger or better or before you it gets a little intense.

This year has been kind of big in our family. I have managed to acquire not one, not two, but…three new nephews from my two most interesting siblings. My younger sister and my youngest older brother—

Redman Lucas and Dalton Collin were born to my sister and her husband over the summer and Jasper Jack was born to my brother and his wife 3 days ago. (Where these people get their names from I will never understand. –actually, I do know where they got them: Redman from a book my sisters husband read about his family’s history, Dalton from a prep school my sister’s husband went to—Jasper from my sister-in-law’s book club friend and Jack is a family name I’ve never particularly favored.)

But yes, I had a point, so these children were born and because some how my sister and has reconciled with my brother (long story and it should be noted that no one likes my brother and I hope you’re reading this) they are baptizing their children together.

Personally, I am not religious but I do really love baptisms for some reason. Born and baptized an Episcopalian (mother)- raised Catholic (father)- rebelled against all religion (college)- found a need for goodness towards all and explored Unitarianism—fell in love with a Jew and began converting, broke up with the Jew but loved the religion finished converting(now so similar to my oldest brother)—so I guess technically I am Jewish now. My boyfriend is Jewish, he thinks I am more Jewish than him, I’m so confused. ANYWAY- I do love religious ceremonies and traditions. I can’t help it. I find them incredibly relaxing and some how they connect me to comfort.
I think when you’re a baby you are this little pure thing. Non corrupted by anything. You just live and as you grow older you learn the things your parents are about and you slowly become little parts of them. When you come from a big family you are bound to be a little bit like everyone- even if you despise some of them. It just happens and when I go to these baptisms I wonder what this little person is going to be like. For the sake of the world I hope Jasper is nothing like his parents but there could be worst things.

I am home for Thanksgiving and to see my nephews be recognized by God. So that if they die randomly they will have a little place in heaven.

Yesterday I drove from New York to Baltimore in the most disgusting weather. I got the finger at least 30 times, nearly rear ended 3 different people, was almost side swiped by morons 5 times, screamed at the top of my lungs from literally not moving for over 10 minutes (yes I put my car in park), and cried when I reached my home street. I drove because I thought it would be a good idea to have a car in my home city. You know, since I am going to be home for over a week. my boyfriend had it right all along: Penn Station to Penn Station Acela style—
