On days when staying awake and focused seem nearly impossible, how can I keep my energy up during th

On days when staying awake and focused seem nearly impossible, how can I keep my energy up during the day without ruining my diet with too much caffeine and sugar?

Before we talk about nutrition, we need to talk about sleep. Just cutting down your sleep by one hour will have a huge negative effect on your energy for the rest of day. Nutrition For You doesn’t recommend a particular number of sleeping hours per night. We all have our own individual sleep needs but it is very important to realize that if we don’t meet them for a few days, no matter how good we eat, we will feel exhausted because of not getting adequate amount of rest.

Aside from lack of sleep, there are chronic health conditions that can leave you constantly fatigued such as fibromyalgia and diabetes. Low-level depression and anxiety can also cause fatigue. These health issues may negatively affect your energy and focus throughout the day and it is important to discuss these issues with your doctor as soon as possible.

Assuming that you are sleeping enough and that you are addressing any health issues that can cause fatigue, proper nutrition can help you maintain a consistently high level of energy throughout the day. Here are some key points.

A clear mind can boost your energy

Recent research shows that improving your cognition boosts your energy. In other words, a clearer mind can make you feel more energetic. Consuming foods that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can improve cognition. In addition, the anti-oxidants in these foods can help your brain function and boost your memory. Flax seeds, walnuts, and soybeans are particularly good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. Nutrition for You suggests consuming six to eight ounces of salmon per week. However, if you cannot get salmon regularly, you can supplement your diet with fish oil. Nutrition for You also recommends eating extra servings of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. All of these will help keep your mind clear and engaged and boost your energy.

Eat before and after working out

Skipping meals before and after exercising can deplete your sugar significantly and make you feel tired for the rest of the day. This underscores the importance of having both pre- and post-exercise meals. The difference between the two may be crucial for a bodybuilder doing resistance training or a marathoner doing endurance workouts but for the average person, a general pre- and post-workout meal plan is relatively simple to put together. Nutrition for You recommends consuming 20 to 30 grams of carbohydrates and 15 to 20 grams of protein an hour before working out. For example, you can have a banana with yogurt or a slice of whole wheat bread with low-fat cheese before exercising.

It is equally important to eat after completing a physical activity. Nutrition for You recommends consuming 30 grams of carbohydrates and 25 to 35 grams of protein within 15 to 30 minutes after working out. For example, plan to bring a turkey sandwich or a banana and cheese to the gym with you. If you are really pressed for time, a shake or smoothie can be good as long as it contains both carbohydrates and protein. It is important to stress that the post-exercise meal should be consumed within 15 to 30 minutes after working out.

Eat enough of the right stuff

To keep your energy up throughout the day, you need enough of the right calories from a combination of carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats, ideally in every meal. Avoiding carbohydrates and fats or skipping meals entirely can adversely affect your energy level.

Nutrition for You strongly recommends that you have breakfast within an hour of waking up. You fast all night while you sleep and so it is important to break that fast as soon as you can after waking up and to do so with a balance of carbohydrates, fiber, and protein. For example, if you have yogurt, add a fruit; if you have bread, add egg whites or cheese.

As for the rest of the day, always remember to eat and avoid fasting for too long. Eating sensibly every three hours levels out blood sugar spikes. In general, an average person should consume roughly 600 to 700 calories for lunch and 500 to 700 calories for dinner. It is important to note that eating too much in a single meal may slow you down. Dumping too many calories all at once takes a toll on your body and may make you feel tired.

Finally, eating refined carbohydrates such as white bread, noodles and white rice may give you a sudden spike in energy because they raise your blood glucose. However, a surge of insulin will knock down the sugar and will linger after the sugar is absorbed. This will give you low blood sugar and, consequently will make you feel fatigued and prematurely hungry again.

Drink the right fluids

Sometimes fatigue is actually caused by dehydration even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you consume enough fruits and vegetables as well as healthy soups then drinking five to six cups of water per day will keep you well hydrated.

In addition, you should try to avoid alcohol. Since alcohol is a depressant, consuming alcohol can contribute to your low energy. Excessive drinking can definitely wear you down and excessive alcohol greatly dehydrates your body.

Adequate amount of sleep and rest combined with proper nutrition is the key to maintaining your energy up throughout the day. Nutrition For You can help you develop a customized meal plan to help you achieve your specific nutrition and weight management goals.

He was the greatest writer of his generation. His body of work, which included over fifty bestseller

He was the greatest writer of his generation. His body of work, which included over fifty bestsellers, was one of legendary status. He had lived a comfortable life and had accomplished amazing things. But as the famed author was fighting a hopeless battle against hepatocirrhosis, there was one life’s regret that he had yet to resolve. He wished to see his wife and sons for one last time.

Despite impassioned pleas from the author’s many devoted friends, the man’s wife refused to budge. She had said that she and her two children will never see him again. She firmly reasserted that there will be no change of plan.

As the author’s final days drew near, people overheard him murmuring repeatedly the names of his loved ones. He really wanted to share his final moments on earth with his family. But his wish was not granted; the man passed away lonely and discontentedly at the young age of 48.

The news of the author’s death, though expected, brought extreme sadness to his legions of fans. The street of his birthplace came to an instant standstill. Images of people choking in tears and disbelief sent shockwaves around the world. His funeral was flooded with fans and admirers. Curiously, none of his relatives showed up for the procession. His wife and sons didn’t even bother to comment on his death.

The author’s life was one of devoted friendships, excessive drinking, and beautiful women. The man was everyone’s friends. If there was an award for the world’s best friend, he would have won it hands down. He chose his friends selectively. But once he established a friendship with someone, he became very devoted to that person. There were numerous instances of the author helping his friends out with large sums of his own money. He once even mortgaged his house and used the money to assist a troubled friend.

The excessive charity left the author living in debt for the latter half of his life. He sometimes had to produce 3-4 novels a month just to pay his bills. Fortunately, his friends were equally devoted to him. Many of his later novels were actually written by his friends under his penname. This helped to ease his troubled finances quite a bit.

The famous author met his wife in a chance encounter. He was completely smitten by her. She bore a striking resemblance to the main female character in one of his novels. Upon seeing her, he knew he had found the love of his life.

The early part of their marriage was a happy one. But the man was a romantic author who needed inspirations for the other female characters of his novels. He would find these inspirations in countless beautiful women who found it extremely difficult to reject such a handsome and talented man.

It wasn’t long before his wife had had enough and left him for good; she brought with her their two children. As much as she was bothered by his unfaithfulness, she was bothered more by his overly devotion to his friends. The author’s wife despised her husband’s indifference towards the wellbeing of his loved ones. He often abandoned his wife and sons to be with his friends. Even when the family was facing tough times financially, he never hesitated in spending his hard-earned cash on his friends. The man’s mistresses shared a similar sentiment. They loved him and hated him with the same fervor.

One by one, his loved ones were leaving him. The author could care less, however. After all, he was always surrounded by good friends. And he figured his loved ones will return to him sooner or later.

DISCLAIMER:

The thoughts, stories, events are all taken from an actual journal which was written by me. Therefore, everything herein is taken from my perspective, my point of view and does not reflect the ideas or views of anyone mentioned or indicated herein. The names have been changes to protect the guilty, or innocent. Again, it’s based on perspective. But I think we can all agree that anyone over the age of five would be, could be deemed guilty. I’m just saying.

EPILOGUE

In the fall of 1997 my friend, Chris, and I took a journey to the Netherlands that will not be long forgotten.

Okay, truth be told if I didn’t have a journal and a camera with me making notations here and there everything would be one big fog-patch on the horizon. And by fog-patch I mean we smoked enough cannabis that you’d think we were electing the next pope. And I think it’s safe to say I don’t think either one of our future grandkids would ever develop glaucoma.

Who am I? At the time I was a recently married 30-year old white, unemployed male who was taking a trip to the Netherlands with a high school buddy. My buddy? A successful guy, about the same age as I, moving up in the corporate world who, at the time, was single.

Now, to put things straight: for those that are sensitive to sexist remarks, smoking illegal substances and excessive drinking, and not putting your fellow man before all else. The following is not for you.

I want to make myself clear: this is not a hedonistic romp through Europe where two buddies drink and smoke themselves blind while playing grab-ass with the local female persuasion. It’s about two friends who drink and smoke themselves blind while trying to find a little meaning in their mixed up little worlds, and occasionally get on each others nerves. Plain and simple. Aside from all the binge smoking and drinking, the conversations on life continue to reoccur and it’s something we’ve been doing since we first met.

A little background on what was going on in 1997 before we begin: President Bill Clinton is inaugurated for his second term, Madeleine Albright becomes the first female Secretary of State, the Green Bay Packers win the NFL Championship for the first time since 1967, in Scotland, scientist announce that an adult sheep named Dolly had been successfully cloned, rapper Notorious BIG is killed in a drive-by shooting, Tara Lipinski, 14, becomes the youngest women’s figure skating champion, 39 Heaven’s Gate cultists commit mass suicide at their compound in San Diego, a Pegasus rocket carries the remains of 24 people into Earth’s orbit, becoming the first space burial, Andrew Cunanan murders Jeffrey Trail, beginning a murder spree that lasts until July and ends with the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace, Timothy McVeigh is convicted on 15 counts of murder and conspiracy for his role in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the F.W Woolworth Company closes after 117 years in business, Steve Jobs returns to Apple Computer, Microsoft buys a 150-million dollar share of financially troubled Apple Computer, Princess Diana of Whales was killed a week before my trip, Mother Theresa of Calcutta dies of heart failure, and James Cameron’s Titanic premiers in the US.

How does any of this have anything to do with our trip? Nothing. But to give you a sense of what was going on in the world when we decided to fly across the Atlantic.

We start off with me in New York after having flown in from Portland, Oregon…

The dog disease Pyometra. How to avoid it. What age group can it happen to and most importantly, what is Pyometra. The symptoms, treatment topics and much more in this article. The main cause of Pyometra is usually an imbalance of female hormones, primarily progesterone which results is an overactive uterus lining. Secretions accumulate in the cavity of this organ and cause distention. Bacteria entering through the vagina may cause secondary infection in some cases; however, many of the pus-filled organs are sterile when cultured. Pyometra usually occurs from one week to three months after a heat (but may occur at any time during any heat cycle) and may concur with a Pseudocyesis (false pregnancy) but there has not been enough evidence to suggest an establishment between these hormone-controlled diseases. The disease occurs in female dogs who have not bred for a prolonged period of time and those having produced litters. Diagnose of Pyometra can be detected form the clinical signs and the history of a recent heat. The most common signs are digestive disorders such as loss of appetite, diarrhea, and vomiting. Owners might also want to be watchful of symptoms which may include swollen abdomen, excessive drinking of water, listlessness and vaginal discharge; which is often foul-smelling. Discharges indicate that the cervix is still open and this will reduce some of the abdominal pressure and toxicity associated with Pyometra. Radiographs and blood counts will be necessary to confirm the disease. An x-ray (radiograph) will show the large, pus-filled uterus quite clearly in most cases. The white blood cell count may increase (indicating infection) two to ten times over normal limit. The best way to avoid Pyometra is of course spaying your dog. This prevents the disease from developing as the uterus and ovaries are removed. Is surgery going to be safe? As most veterinarians will agree, Pyometra is a surgical disease that requires the diseased organ to be removed for an increased chance of a complete recovery. As surgery suggest, there are certain potential risks to be held into consideration especially if performed on an older dog. Heart disease, kidney disorders, and other medical conditions may increase the risk of surgery. If proper supportive therapy is carried out, even the highest risk patients stand a good chance of survival and recovery. Consult your vet for their advice and best recommendations.

Loss of Wealth Can Disrupt Mental Health By Michael Oberschneider Special to The Washington Post Tue

Loss of Wealth Can Disrupt Mental Health

By Michael Oberschneider
Special to The Washington Post
Tuesday, April 28, 2009

The reasons why somebody decides to take his or her life often remain opaque, even when there’s a suicide note. But recent highly publicized deaths, such as the apparent murder-suicides of one family in their Middletown home and another in a Towson hotel room, and now the apparent suicide of Freddie Mac’s 41-year-old acting chief financial officer, David Kellermann, have fueled speculation about the special psychological stresses caused by financial crisis.

I can’t comment on those cases, but as a psychologist I have seen a correlation between the economy’s downturn in the past year and increased symptoms among my clients of anxiety, stress and depression, as well as marital and parenting conflicts focused on spending. Some of my clients are having trouble sleeping; others complain about increases in stress-induced stomach pain and headaches.

According to the American Psychological Association’s 2007 survey on stress in America, work and money are the two greatest factors of stress for about 75 percent of Americans. Research has also shown increases in drinking, eating, gambling and smoking in response to stress. Another survey found a decrease in visits to the doctor during the current recession.

Suicide rates in the United States are on the rise after more than a decade of dropping, and middle-aged white males are a particularly vulnerable group, with four times as many men as women dying by suicide, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The loss of jobs and health insurance are just two of the variables that have been associated with that increase.

What I hear from my clients and colleagues suggests that the financial downturn and continued uncertainty have overtaxed us emotionally.

The country’s economic problems are beyond our control, making it all the more essential to pay attention to what you can do on an individual level. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind during these tough times:

– The adage that misery loves company does not apply here. Finding friends, family members and co-workers to complain to in hopes of feeling supported will probably lead to more upset. Talking about the economy will probably involve some degree of mutual worrying and frustration. So avoid the topic. People say that politics and religion are topics to be avoided at social gatherings; I would add the stock market to that list.

– Don’t keep looking at your investment portfolio; it will only upset you further. I recommend scheduling a short time (30 minutes at most) on the weekend to review your portfolio and make any needed adjustments. This way your work week is freed up to focus your energies on what matters most: your work, your relationships and yourself.

– Avoid making statements such as “It’s gotta turn around soon” or “This has to be the bottom, right?” That sort of thought pattern will lead only to more worries. Instead, come up with a mantra that fits you well, such as “I have what I need today.”

– Reduce the time you spend looking at or listening to the media discussing the financial crisis. Checking in briefly at the start of the day and at the end of the day is a better approach than watching CNBC all evening. You will be just as informed without running the risk of excessive exposure to the situation.

– Living a balanced life is always a good thing, especially so in trying times. Avoid drinking to excess, watch your diet and make sure to get enough sleep and exercise.

– Focus on areas beyond your financial concerns. Start a hobby or organize your home. Consider taking an evening class. Many companies offer to pay a percentage for schooling, especially if the course work relates to your job. Additional activities will serve as a distraction and possibly give you a greater sense of control over the areas you can have some control over.

– If you or someone you know exhibits any of the warning signs of suicide, such as sudden, disturbing changes in behavior, get help right away. You can reach a suicide hotline such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-999-9999 or call 911 at any time of the day.

It’s important to remember that America has faced recessions before — and we’ve gotten through them.

Christmas and the holiday season has been on my mind for a long while now. I should stress that it i

Christmas and the holiday season has been on my mind for a long while now. I should stress that it is not because I am super-efficient and did my Christmas shopping in August, but simply because its around the end of the summer that the long lead publications start on their December or January issues.

Every year, like every health professional in the media, I get asked for usual quotes for the usual articles. I’m sure you have seen them – How to have a healthy Christmas, Get through party season without piling on the pounds….and despite the fact that I duly add my quotes for the journalists, I do wonder that many readers really take the articles seriously. It’s just not what Christmas/December is about, is it? After all, there’s not much festive spirit in staying home with a adzuki bean and spelt salad, is there?

I am fairly sure that most people succumb to the excesses of the holiday season, and judging by the amount of people walking around in central London last night ( much the worse for wear it seemed ) restraint didn’t seem to be the order of the day.

Christmas seems to have morphed into a time of indulgence of every type. We are encouraged to shop, spend, socialise, eat and drink, and basically enjoy ourselves ( assuming of course that your idea of happiness is being broke, overweight, tired and hung-over by Christmas Eve ). The traditional December excesses are duly followed by the customary January penance which involves detoxing, promises of exercise and the odd extreme diets thrown in just to complete the picture of repentance.

Are we making merry while we can, using Christmas as the excuse, as we know what’s coming? Eating and spending yourself silly won’t do much to stop the misery that we are promised for January 2009.You just have to ask yourself ‘is it worth it?’.

I wonder that when we are left to our own devices, and with just a little bit of encouragement, ( ‘Go on, its Christmas, you deserve it ‘) we can eat for Europe. Is our appetite for spending money, alcohol and especially food something that we control the rest of the year, unleashing it just once a year when it’s socially acceptable?

With all that in mind, how do we get find that balance between enjoyment and indulgence, feast and famine? My advice is simple – don’t bother. If you want to eat, then eat. If you eat well the rest of the year then you will know how good it can make you feel. Having a healthy, balanced diet – one that includes daily servings of at least five portions of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins such as fish and poultry, complex carbohydrates, plenty of water and fluids, occasional alcohol, minimal sugar and saturated fats, combined with a regular exercise and time for relaxation – promotes not just optimal health but feeling well too. So I say this; If you want chocolate, have some. The same goes for brandy butter, crisps, roast potatoes, Christmas pudding, cream and practically every other festive food you can think of. It’s only once a year, it’s not going to kill you, and the whole point about eating well is creating good health that is robust enough to survive the onslaught of even the most indulgent Christmas.

Enjoy.

During difficult economic times, you really don’t need much of an excuse to get loaded. Here’s one anyway:

It’s Cheaper Than Drinking Water

That’s the case in Great Britain, where it was recently found that it’s less expensive to purchase booze than bottled water at the country’s leading supermarkets. In fact, discounted “own-brand” beer costs as little as 35 cents per can.

The research comes from a non-profit anti-alcoholism group called Addaction, that also supports a push to tighten drinking laws in the country with measures that include banning “happy hour” specials and other cheap deals on booze.

While certain party-fouling groups seem to think that low prices contribute to drinking problems, we can’t help but wonder how bottled water got so damn expensive. Isn’t beer still being made out of water?

I was out with friends on Saturday evening, and they went home by tube and got caught up in the frac

I was out with friends on Saturday evening, and they went home by tube and got caught up in the fracas caused by those people marking the end of being allowed to drink alcohol on the tube. You may have noticed that some 17 people were arrested and transport staff were assaulted during the altercations. The drinking culture in Britian is quite shocking to visitors from other countries, and even what we Brits might term ‘moderate’ drinking is generally far in excess of what is considered safe from a healthy perspective. When we talk of drinking in Britain, inevitably we will picture a drunker girl in a tight skirt, a top that doesn’t quite cover her midriff, falling around outside a grimy nightclub or pub helped up by slightly less drunk friends. Easy to categorise and thus dismiss as not people like us, because we drink in moderation. Don’t we?

I am not a bah-humbug about drinking, lord knows I have drunk enough in my lifetime, and then didn’t drink for three years, now I have the occasional two glasses of wine with dinner. But when we tot up how much we do drink, many people are amazed at just how much alcohol they do consume. A bottle of wine is 10 units, and so the average glass in a pub or bar is 2 units ( sometimes getting towards 3 units ). A quick drink with a friend after work, or a couple of glasses with dinner every day and you are not only at the upper limit of what is considered safe, but there are some ensuing health issues that we don’t consider. Such as not sleeping well, feeling the need for more coffee the next day, increased hunger for simple carbohydrates all of which leads to potential weight gain etc etc. Then, having had simple carbohydrates and caffeine all day, what does one need to help relax in the evenings? More alcohol.

I am not judging, any of my friends will tell you that I love my Pinot Noir, but I do often wonder if its worth it? Alcohol is so much part of life in Britain, and that social element, the way that it is endorsed and supported in polite society, excuses and masks what is essentially excessive drinking.

The on again off again discussions of putting warning labels on alcoholic beverages, like that found on cigarette packs, is on again. Kevin Rudd will be bringing his proposal to the leaders of the states and territories later this week at the Council of Australian Governments meeting, in hope of stopping the abuse of alcohol by young Australians.

Seeing as the warning labels are mainly targeting the youth to not drink to excess I wonder if they will go further than solely health warnings and also include social warnings. I’d love to see something like “Excessive consumption of alcohol may result in you imagining the ugliest person in the room as the hottest person to ever exist”

Here’s an example of the proposed warning label back in 2006:

I invite you to do a self-analysis. Carefully observe your body and your face in front of the mirror. What is bothering you? In your mind, list everything that you consider unsatisfying, physically speaking. Now, ask yourself: was indiscipline a decisive factor for this displeasure with your body?

Drinking way too much, smoking, lackadaisical eating, not enough sleep, sedentary life… there are many ways to disrespect our body. We act carelessly on what concerns to our health and appearance, without the conscience that they’re very important for a fulfilling life. How interesting is it that we only see how health is worthy when we lose it… and feeling satisfaction with ourselves includes looking at the mirror and liking what we see.

So, it is about time that we decide which habits we’ll maintain, if the healthy or the mischievous. It is about time that we ask ourselves for how long we’ll keep our beauty hidden under some extra pounds or nicotine-dark teeth. It’s time for us to decide if our health is important to us or not, and how we want to be, now and in the future. And, above it all, it’s time for us to respect the wonderful instrument that our body is, without which life on Earth would be impossible, and that is a heavenly gift.

Did you think about it? Have you decided to change? If yes, that’s great. Some practical actions are required, then: get rid of all the harmful habits, choose healthier food, try to start some physical activity and be aware that changes which come to last must not be radical, but gradual, by stages. Every change takes time. But the really important thing is that you make the decision to change, take the first step and keep on going that way. And be proud of yourself, because you’re starting a new life!

See you soon,
