November 28, 2009 – May 16, 2010

Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, is a great artists and my professor from graduate school. I am excited to see his latest work. He will be featured at the Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, Massachusetts from November 28, 2009, through May 16, 2010. On exhibition is Manglano-Ovalle’s video, Juggernaut, filmed in the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve in Baja Sur, Mexico.

Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle is interested in linking the enormity of our modern industrial presence with our surroundings. In this new video, the pristine, gleaming white salt flats of the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve are disturbed by the menacing and thundering sounds of human intervention.

Manglano-Ovalle, is currently creating a newly commissioned work at MASS MoCA, opening December 12, 2009.

As I mentioned in the quick calendar update earlier this week, the 2nd year group (oops, I initially thought they were graduates – sorry about that!) from jewellery at Box Hill Tafe, collectively ‘The Body Corporate’, have a exhibition ‘Peep Show‘ at Self Preservation.

front window; photograph taken with permission

Participating artists are (alphabetic order):

Amber Crocker [blog]

Alexandra Downes

Puneet Jodhka [blog]; I particularly liked the ’spikey ring’ with scrolls of paper and an unusual shape (there is an image on her blog)

Kate Marshall [blog]

Karyn Nankivell; the polypropylene rings are expressive and effective

Stephen Robb [blog]

Misako Sakai [blog]

Sarah Thomson [blog]

Jane Walker [blog]

It’s interesting that most of the students have blogs, which I incidentally discovered a few weeks ago – each started in October and have a few posts. Perhaps it was a class project? I think it’s great that jewellers, and in fact any artist, explore the possibilities of connecting with others using this kind of format. I am interested to see how many of the students take to this form of communication and thought-collection, and intend to check again early next year to see which blogs have been abandoned (after all, this is not for everyone) and which have been taken up with gusto!

photograph taken with permission

The layout of Self Preservation has changed since I was last there. The larger first room, beyond the cafe area, which was once full of cabinets of jewellery, now is a larger cafe space with a large communal table and other tables and chairs. I was told that the kitchen has also been extended and that the menu is more comprehensive – while I won’t wander into food-blogging territory here, I plan to go back soon and try some food.

Anyhoo, the jewellery cabinets have been moved into the back room which was the gallery. This room was often bare when an exhibition was not on, so this move is a good one. However it does mean that when there is an exhibition, like this one, it is a little crowded in there.

‘Peep Show‘ is at Self Preservation until Sunday 29th November 2009.

Yesterday I went to the Warhol’s exhibition ‘Mr. Amèrica’, in Malba, with my friend exo. It was pretty good, with a lot of the polaroid series, his pop paintings (Marilyn, Mao, the Cow..) and more stuff, like movies.. that bothered me, because they showed them without sound, and, I understand it, because they wanted to display them as a ‘piece of art’, as another painting, but in that way I think something has been lost.
(What I really like was the quotes in each painting/photo, I should have like to write some.. but, the museum doesn’t allow me to being with my bag, and I completely forgot to take paper and pen).

So, I bought postcards:

And then, had a nice nocturne walk around Recoleta (a lot of glamour, my god! I feel like a country girl, fortunately for me I hadn’t braids on..)

God bless Burger King and the coupons (quick dinner, he!)

(my english is very rusty, I hope that using this weblog changes that).

I have been visiting shows in the Midlands today and have felt the incredible positivity radiating f

I have been visiting shows in the Midlands today and have felt the incredible positivity radiating from some clients who can not move for people clambering onto their stands to sample their delights and purchase their brilliant show offers.

Unfortunately I have also had a tear bought to my eye by exhibitors, clients who have been advised poorly into which show they should exhibit at.

We all know at these times sales are harder and achieving targets are extremely hard pushed but if we are to sustain the exhibition and events industry as a whole we need to advise our clients and exhibitors honestly and thoughtfully.

Exhibiting at a show/trade show or exhibition is an incredible way to show the world that you are here, that you are proud of your business/products or services and that you are ready to create an awareness of your goods, But doing it at the right show can make or break a company.

As event professionals it is our responsibility to advise our clients of what shows are appropriate, get them to wander round the show and see if it’s for them, if you’re confident your shows is you are going to get their business eventually, by showing them your confidence you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I have seen today the exhibitors that have been advised correctly and chosen the right show are now exhibiting at 9 or 10 shows a year because they got it right! They now have the funds to plough back into more exhibitions strengthening our industry and creating more contracts for more companies. We all gain from helping exhibitors make the right decision.

On the other hand I have seen a brilliant company with a fantastic product at totally the wrong show, buying into 2 at once with poor advice this client will be lucky to survive considering the huge costs, Who wins? No one, had they been told, “no this shows actually not for you but why don’t you try…” they would have flourished, and yet another exhibition convert would have been established. Instead the exhibition will receive no future booking from this client, they won’t require a stand, staff, carpets, signage, we all lose not least the exhibitor themselves.

Exhibitions, Trade Shows and public shows are to me the most incredible tool for a company, as event professionals I think we should be showing exhibitors how to build with them.

Let me know your thoughts.

“… The thought that went into culling thousands upon thousands of images into 83 and putting them into a book is something few photographers seem to think deeply about. Too often I think a book becomes just a place to showcase a number of images that may or may not be related, but are frequently related only by subject. The time Frank took to edit and sequence his work, to THINK about his work, his intent, and his audience needs to be studied and celebrated. …”

Only 3 more days to see the fantastic exhibition “High and Low” of Annette Streyl at NextArt Gallery. The German artist (born 1968, lives in Hamburg) is internationally known for her machine-knitted buildings. Streyls works are shown in Hungary for the first time.

Annette Streyl at NextArt Gallery

The arrangement of the exhibition is quite unusual and impressive, e.g. the “Berlin TV Tower” is presented twice. One appears as a 3d model, stuck on the galleries walls it seems to float in space; the other model of the tower is hung like a wet towel on a clothesline, next to the “Reichstag”.

Besides there are buildings or monuments of modern life, like a McDonald’s, an IKEA store, the Palast der Republik and many more. To exhibit these works in a commercial gallery is quite brave, as such works are not as easy to sell like a painting or a photography. But progressive exhibitions like these do definitely good for the galleries landscape in Budapest!

The annual EXSA Awards Gala Event was held on Thursday, 19 November 2009 at the Gallagher Convention

The annual EXSA Awards Gala Event was held on Thursday, 19 November 2009 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. This year, a new series of awards were unveiled – the first targeting the event industry since the Association extended membership to event management companies in 2008.

EXSA members enjoyed the opportunity to relax before tackling the challenges and opportunities 2010 has to offer. The theme for the celebration this year was “Go Green”, and this was carried through from decor to dress code.

According to EXSA Chairperson Rina Fortmann, “Our members once again gave generously of both their time and resources, resulting in a fantastic evening honouring excellence within our industry. An Association relies on the support and dedication of its members and I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank the following members for their generous contributions: CPS Promotions, 3D Design, Design and Display, DK Design, Emperors Palace, Gallagher Convention Centre, Hire and Hire, Just Bloom Designs, Magnetic Events, Martin Snoek Communications, Sandton Convention Centre, SARCDA Trade Exhibitions, Oasys Innovations, Rentnet Rentals, Timeless Plant Displays and Tropical Plants. Their support has made tonight’s event a success”.

The evening started on a high note for Oasys Innovations, with the announcement of the team winning a coveted gold award at the recent international Sport Management Awards that were hosted in London. This is a first for a South African company, and EXSA extends its congratulations to the company.

The evening continued to celebrate the achievements of EXSA members during the year.

The Excellence Awards this year highlighted top performers in the exhibition industry:

- Best Exhibition Venue Employee: shared by Adene Pringle of Sandton Convention Centre and Elaine Crewe of Gallagher Convention Centre;

- Best Exhibition Organiser Employee: Teresia Stander of SARCDA Trade Exhibitions;

- Best Exhibition Supplier Employee: Ashleigh Masfen of Oasys Cape Town;

- Best Exhibition Venue: Gallagher Convention Centre;

- Best Exhibition Organiser: SARCDA Trade Exhibitions; and

- Best Exhibition Supplier: Expo Screens.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Hans Zwets.

The Best Comsumer Exhibition awards went to: Three City Events for Cape Town Baba Indaba; Exposure Marketing for The Baby Expo Durban; and Homemakers Johannesburg. The Best Trade Exhibition Awards went to: SARCDA International; and SARCDA Christmas. Dogan Trading received a Certificate of Excellence for Automechanika.

The Best Trade and Consumer Exhibition award went to Homemakers Cape Town, while Agri-Expo’s ”From the Earth” received a Certificate of Excellence. The winner of the Trade and Consumer category was Agri-Expo’s SA Cheese Festival, while Biz Events received a certificate for The National Boat Show. The Confex Award went to Complete Exhibitions for “SA Aids”.

Those winning Stand Awards included: 369 Designs Centre for Markex; Set Squared for Mega Media Expo; Set Squared for Sun International Soccerex 2008; Scan Display for Bayer Schering Plough at FIGO 2009; and 369 Designs Centre for Mpumalanga Tourism Park at the Tourism Indaba.

For system stands the winners included: Hakunamatata for Mezzo Systems at Markex; Hakunamatata for Axis Communication at Securex; Stand Out Design for Schneider Electric at Switchgear and Drives; Hakunamatata for Antalis at Sign Africa; and Oasys Innovations for Nampak at PROPAK.

It was said by Fortmann, “Our members continue to strive towards excellence in an industry that is, by nature, constantly evolving. With new technological developments, innovations and products, we are required to be ahead of the trend. The exhibition and event industry is a critical part of the marketing plans of both the private and public sector. During the current recession our members have had to demonstrate a clear and measurable return on investment to their customers and based on the calibre of tonight’s award winners I am confident our members are well equipped to make it through these tough economic times”.

The inaugural EXSA Awards for the event industry, Memorable Events, were presented to: Gallagher Convention Centre for the Ben 10 Experience, which was a Silver Award; Oasys Innovations for their Customer Event, which was a Silver Award; Liberty Holdings for an internal communication event, which was a Gold Award; Three City Events in the category R500 000 – R1 million for their Baba Indaba, which was a Gold Award; and Martin Snoek Communications in the category Events under R100 000 for their Orion launch for Southern Mapping Company, which was a Gold Award.

Oasys Innovations won the award at the end of the evening for the best-dressed team: they used recycled banners as waistcoats and ties.

Formtann concluded: “It has been a difficult year for many South Africans and our members have made a generous contribution to providing Christmas cheer to the children cared for by New Jerusalem. Finally on a personal note, I would also like to thank the EXSA Board members for their continued support and commitment to our association during 2009. I would like to thank EXSA Treasurer Nigel Walker for his support during the course of this year, Doug Rix for his enthusiasm and dedication, Justin Hawes for his commitment to the greening cause within the exhibition and event industry, which inspired the theme for tonight’s awards and Nicholas de Klerk for his vision which brought tonight’s festivities to life, as well as his contribution to mentoring young designers in our industry”.

It’s gonna be one of those. About once a month Dublin ends up with approximately one bajillion exhibition openings on the one Thursday night. Today is one such Thursday. The mayhem is also compounded by the fact that we’re a tidy month from Christmas and the end of another calendar year of spending Arts Council funding wisely, so plenty of galleries are opening their advent-calendar shows to bid farewell to ‘09. Though I may pop in elsewhere, my plan is to go to ‘Nightlight’ at Bombhouse Gallery & Studios. I’m a big fan of what the guys down there are doing and their previous exhibitions have been really unique and enjoyable. This latest one is no different, as they invite a group of artists to create works that utilise light in different ways in a vast gallery space that will remain completely unlit for the six evenings of the show. The works vary from neon lights to clocks and the tiny, lit-up worlds created by Wendy Stephens (pictured above). The opening night tonight will also feature a performance by Phil Hession involving “a number of flashing SLR cameras, fluorescent tape and traditional song recital” some time between 6 and 10pm.

As I said, it’s a busy night, the kind of night that should attract a crowd of people in the same way that Culture Night did. But it won’t. Because they don’t know about it, or don’t think they’re welcome. With shows in (deep breath…) The Joinery, Monster Truck, No Grants Gallery, Kerlin Gallery, Taylor Galleries, the RHA, Alliance Francais and Talbot Gallery also opening at 6pm, and an exhibition in Twisted Pepper from 8 till 11pm, there’s ample opportunity for people to go on an adventure around the city for the evening and take in whatever art and liquids they find… and all for nothing! If you’re around earlier, there’s even an exhibition which seems to just be a combination of a flash mob and a silent disco. The location will be reveald on Twitter at 3pm and the fun goes down, somewhere, at 5pm. Just bring an mp3 player, or an old-skool cassette walkman. Rather than link you to each of thoe galleries individually – in my madness – I may have done something rather useful and quickly marked all of the galleries on a Google Map here. So, grab a thirsty buddy and hit the trail tonight. I’ll see you in the dark.

source – artnews

I have visited the Martin Parr exhibitions at the Baltic, Gateshead twice – and am still trying to work out what the feeling is that his work gives me.

The new exhibition is called Luxury – and includes the above shot and a whole range of others of the rich indulging in different parts of the world. Could he (should he) also re-present the noveau-poor and make it as hard-hitting as Bill Brandt’s views of the upper and lower classes? Or is his gently-satirical and affectionate voice too accepting of the foibles of all classes?

The Parrworld exhibition is just plain interesting – on many counts. His collections enrich the way we receive his work – we get better idea about the mind that selects this shot, and that and that.

The collection of his photo-books (on which he is an expert and has published) is a fine display. The one that got me most was the beautiful inscription from Cartier-Bresson. It was also great to see prints from world masters and from fine North-East photographers.

But I don’t think you can really get into the man, or let him into your sensibility without including his films Martin Parr’s Moving Pictures especially Part One: Modern Times – Think of England. Modern Times – think of England shows his sympathy and a kind, gentle inquiry voice as they camera records the food,and holidays, and recreation of (mainly) the English. It’s not a pretty picture – it is not pastoral or elegiac, or sanitized. The racism is there along with the disgusting food. But above all there is bemusement and acceptance – and not, as with Louis Theroux, with a sense of superiority. I don’t suppose for one moment that Parr shares the values embedded in most of what he photographs or films but Parr is accepting of the diversity of people – and he enables us to look without our habitual judgementalism – or at least provides a space in which to look before we make judgement. The photographs are a re-arrangement of elements that hold back judgment.

I am starting to focus the feeling – and some of its main elements are;

A satire that is more kind than vicious – though it is unflinching about the mores of his subjects.

For me – a fellow-Englander and a fellow Brit.

A document-provider and celebrator of ‘low’ culture

A celebrator of foibles – gentle and satirical.

Photographs that seem like snap-shots write large.

Photographs that make us look and see – before we judge and en-box.

His work is historical, but largely nostalgia-free.

Martin Parr holds up a pretty straight mirror – and he frames in a largely kind and accepting frame.

As you doggedly pursue, chase, and snap at the heels of your Self, you do so knowing there is no chance you will ever catch up. For each of us, throughout our individual lives, we will be ever distant from knowing our own selves. When a person pursues his or her Self in an aggressive, determined way, the resulting hyperactive sensibility allows for a greater adaptability and sensitivity. This flexibility can be useful in contemporary human life, but only to a certain extent. It is also due to the fast-paced nature of today’s engineered environments, that there is a strong tendency (especially among young people) to go to extreme lengths in order to sustain within their own lives the hyperactivity and intensity they witness in popular culture and media. Consider the called-for constant reachability via cell-phones and laptops, as well as many other forms of expedition in our ‘lived-in’ world. These accommodations range from aerodynamics to ATMs. As many workers in today’s professional world simultaneously lament and extol their parasitic relationships with a Blackberry or other such Pocket God, I, too, have at many times felt chained to my laptop (i.e. the Internet), fearing I would miss something absolutely critical. Unfortunately, the fact that missing anything important has not happened for the most part, hardly affects the worry and anxiety that it might happen.

Yet still, it seems, this once motivating anxiety is becoming a repressed urge, one which is less and less a bother, the more my environment becomes one seamless, semi-omniscient “news” feed. On the evening of President Barack Obama’s Address to the Nation, Maya Escobar recorded “Obama Tweet: How a New Generation Gets Their Information.” In this video Escobar documented a particular event, an important cultural event, one which incidentally brought the use of Twitter to the fore in popular culture.

Obama Tweet: How a New Generation Gets Their Information, 2008

I was with Escobar on this evening and was struck by the depth of her interaction with the digital realm. She was sitting in front of a T.V. broadcast of the speech, while she was also further mediating that media via her computer, on which she was following Twitter and CNN.com’s coverage of the event. Beyond all that, Escobar was creating her own real-time, indexical document of the event on television along with CNN and Twitter as instantaneous forms of annotations to the President’s speech. Escobar was watching, sitting one more stage removed, behind the lens of a video camera. Because of the way in which she layered the television screen the computer screen and then the interface of any viewer’s monitor, Escobar has effortlessly choreographed a multi-layered, engagement with the very most current of events. However, though I may have somewhat qualified and rationalized instant-communication tools, I still believe there must be a deliberate effort to complement those socially-prescribed media with other, independent forms of digital exchanges. While I do believe in the great social potential of our rapidly advancing communications media, my work seeks to push and pull on parts of these evolving global ‘informachines,’ in an effort to challenge the omnipresence of commercial media.

Look Out, 2008

That sort of layering of non-dimensional spaces is unique to the contemporary world, with the inception of digital technologies, and this collage-like aesthetic is of great interest to the work of Maya Escobar, as much as it is to my own. Although, unlike the deceptively referential works of my counter-part, in many of my works, I use and refer to popular media sources and specific Internet sites indirectly and rarely with any superficial visibility. It is with great deliberation and much hypothesizing that I curate my works in the manner in which I do. I intend my works to avoid specificity and leave wide-open their readings to a much more self-guided analysis by viewers. In the piece “Look Out,” the projected video came directly from YouTube. I simply cut off the last second of the original video, thus shortening it to 17 seconds. I then prepared it as a video-loop for its installation underneath a staircase at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. Because of its placement, where it fills a theretofore, unaddressed space, it is as though the rolling image is part of the museum structure itself. The particular clip, which I chose after viewing dozens of similarly tagged videos (‘storm,’ ‘tree,’ ‘willow,’ and ‘weeping’), was selected for very specific compositional reasons; reasons which are the very same principles of design taught to anyone working in commercial design or the visual arts: complimentary colors, rule of thirds, dynamic composition and varied textures, to name a few. Because of my focused selection process, this video, although created for very different (and unknown) reasons, still fits very well into the installation space as a deliberately designed, and potentially permanent use of what is otherwise a neglected space. The video became part of the stairwell. By existing within a predetermined, architectural frame, it became part of the space, as opposed to sitting on the surface as a painting does. This projection did not exist in the way that many (most) installations do: as obvious alterations or obtrusive interjections into a space. This work asserts itself as a physical part of the space, as the projector beams through from behind the scrim in the stairwell. It also assumes a living presence, as it reiterates itself, by many reflections and refractions, split and scattered, bouncing around the main hall of the museum. The video functioned as a decorative element but also an illusory window to an outside world, whereas, the space without that piece is simply a pane of glass that looks into the shadowy crotch of a stairwell. I do not mean every square inch should be taken up for some sort of visual activity or illusionary window. Simply, this work proposes how our constructed spaces, in this case a venue for art viewing, might be reinterpreted. Insofar as, a corner can conceivably become a window, as illusory and impermanent as my particular interpretation may be.

“Glowlab is pleased to present ‘The Eventuality of Daybreak’, a solo exhibition by Alex Lukas featuring a new series of post-apocalyptic urban landscapes that blur the visual boundaries of fiction and reality.

Lukas’ work explores the existence of disaster, be it realized or fictitious, in contemporary society. Hyper-realistic motion pictures and unforgiving news footage depict seemingly identical – and equally riveting – facades of tragedy. The artist recognizes that relentless visual bombardment has resulted in society’s desensitization to the aesthetics of destruction.

For ‘The Eventuality of Daybreak’, Lukas has selected photographic spreads of well-known metropolises from vintage publications and uses them dually as canvas and unlikely subject. Through a deft handling of paint and carefully placed screenprinted passages, the artist pushes these aging illustrations in futuristic contexts. Submerging these cities conceptually and physically, Lukas inundates images of American cities with layers of media representing cataclysmic floods and crippling overgrowth.

Also included in the exhibition are works on paper depicting near-future scenes of devastated landscapes – crumbling infrastructure, overturned trucks and telling signs of human despair. As a counterpoint to the underwater cities, these darkly atmospheric and barren vistas signal devastation through an unsettling sense of absence.

Lukas’ intentional use of dated imagery presented in tandem with contemporary situations forces the viewer to reconcile two differing ideologies of urban space. The artist’s work calls into question society’s collective acceptance of the urban environment as an arena of destruction, once thought unthinkable and now seemingly inevitable.

‘The Eventuality of Daybreak’ is Lukas’ first solo exhibition with Glowlab. Lukas’ work has also been exhibited in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Stockholm and Copenhagen as well as in the pages of Swindle Quarterly, Proximity Magazine, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Village Voice, The Drama and The New York Times Book Review. Lukas is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives and works in Philadelphia, where he is a member of the artist collective Space 1026.”

This week for Art Studio 9A we went to the University Arts Gallery (UAG) and Beall Center for Art + Technology to view the works of Roberto Jacoby and Nam June Paik. As I entered the UAG I noticed everyone was as anxious and confused as I was. We all entered the large space in which Roberto Jacoby’s work was displayed and began looking around. His work was pretty confusing to me at first as I noticed they were all images with spanish writing overlaying them. Each was either a letter, a picture, or an article from a newspaper with a saying. Taking three years of Spanish in high school I thought I would be able to decipher at least one of these phrases but to no avail. I was only able to understand bits and pieces. As I looked around everyone was doing the same, attempting to translate and take photos, bewildered by the showing. We were later informed they were commentaries and yet I was still lost in translation.

After browsing the show the instructor indicated there was another room, known as the Beall Center for Art, full of art work. Curious and hopeful I would understand it a little better I went to see. This time the work was done by Nam June Paik and I was instantly engaged especially since it wasn’t in a foreign language. The dark hall was illuminated by brilliant lights, and decorated with machinery. I saw a clock made of lines on 24 TV screens, a giant robot head made of small screens and a giant robot made of TV sets and overcome by small robots made of the same material. I did not know what to make of them but it was fun. I took pictures of it all and thought it was creative and innovative finding ways to use technology to create other pieces of technology such as televisions into a clock and radios and screens as a face.

My overall feeling of visiting the exhibitions is positive. It opened me up to different styles of art and a new section of school I have never really took the time to explore. I highly recommend visiting an exhibition in the University Arts Gallery and Beall Center upon staying at UCI.
