Sanslean Sourcen entpackt, Patch durchgeführt, getestet JUHU! Funktioniert.

GPS Img Direction Ref: ‘M’
GPS Img Direction: 2133/10 (213,3)

META 101

There’s room for more than meets the eye inside a digital photo image file. Regardless of the format, these files can store not only image data but also information about the images. Metadata is, literally, data about data. When included in image files, we call this information “photo metadata.” Metadata is actually part of the image file, effectively a bundle of image data and information about that image.

Digital photo files can include descriptive, technical and administrative classes of metadata of several types. These can list an image’s creator, copyright holder, source and description. They can explain rights released and available to an image. They can list how and when an image was created, its size, color characteristics and more. Read our Metadata FAQs

Embedding and preserving photo metadata can prevent and solve many issues confronting photographers and others who work with digital images. Our goal is to help everyone involved with digital photos – from image creators to distributors, users, archivists and developers – better understand photo metadata and best practices for harnessing this amazing tool to organize and communicate. Read our Metadata Manifesto

It’s a lovely Sunday morning in Bangkok. The sky is clear and it isn’t too hot or humid.

It’s a lovely Sunday morning in Bangkok. The sky is clear and it isn’t too hot or humid. I took some photos out of the window using the Nikon Coolpix P6000’s “Landscape” mode. That reminded me on a minor annoyance in Lightroom 2. I wanted to see if Adobe have fixed it in the Lightroom 3 Beta.

No, they haven’t, but it probably isn’t their fault.

With my Canon EOS-30D, if I take a photo in one of the camera’s preset modes: “Action/Sports”, “Closeup”, “Landscape” or “Portrait” this setting shows up in the “Exposure Program” field of the EXIF information as displayed in Lightroom.

But Lightroom 2 and 3 Beta both show Exposure Program Normal for the Nikon Coolpix P6000.

I assume this is because Nikon store this information in a non-standard format and Adobe don’t extract it from the file.

I checked my old Canon EOS-300D in Landscape mode. Lightroom 2 does not display an EXIF Exposure Program setting at all.

That may mean that the storage of this information in the EXIF is not standard and Adobe made a special case for the EOS-30D.

I tried searching my pictures for those taken in Landscape mode using Lightroom’s filters. It isn’t a standard filter and it does not work if I set up a text filter on “Searchable Metadata” or “Searchable EXIF” for the string “Landscape”. that’s a bit inconvenient. I’d like to be able to do that.

I tried it in both version 2 and version 3 with the same result. The fact that Adobe use the term “searchable” implies that some EXIF (and IPTC) fields are not searchable.

The problem is obviously not simple. My current guess is that “Exposure Program” is an enumerated type rather than a string and each manufacturer encodes it differently.

I know “serious photographers” don’t use these scene modes at all. On Canon cameras, for example, you cannot shoot in Raw if you use a programmed mode. I am a pragmatist. I’ll use whatever it takes to get the picture I want. I do draw the line at what I think are silly modes like “Food“.

Think of the EXIF data as the pencil and paper of the pre-digital days. Before the digital era, the photographer had to manually record the settings of each shot so he or she could look at their photos later and learn what worked for a given situation, or what combination of settings produced what effects.

These days it’s a breeze — no pencils in sight! When you take that shot, a great deal of information is written into the image. Much of the data is of no real practical use as far as the average photographer like you or I are concerned, but some of it is extremely helpful. Things like the aperture, shutter speed, focal length and ISO value are all available to be referred to later — sometimes it could be much later. Occasionally I’m looking through my archives on Flickr and I think “That looks good, how did I do that?” The EXIF data is there and I just click through and find out.

For those new to technical terms and important but initially difficult-to-grasp concepts like the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, the benefits of this information are much more immediate and valuable. As soon as you take your shot you can check the EXIF data right away in-camera and perhaps compare to other shots you have just made. For those new to photography this is very useful, especially while out there shooting.

Having your data available to you through an image sharing community like Flickr is convenient, but it’s also good to check out other’s EXIF information too. You might see a photograph and think “I like that motion blur, I wonder what the shutter speed was?” If the photographer has retained the EXIF data in the file, you can check it out for yourself.

I say “retained” because sometimes the data isn’t there. Images from film cameras don’t provide EXIF data of course, and some image editors have an option that strips out the data when saving for the internet to keep the file size as small as possible — so beware of that when saving your files.

So keep an eye on your EXIF data, it’s an important part of learning about your camera and the more technical aspects of photography in general. But any amount of EXIF data is useless if you aren’t actually producing it, so get out there get shooting and see you in the Seoul Photo Club on Flickr.

Oppdatert 26.11.2009

Du finner Gravity her.

Nye oppdaterte kart, gratis bruk!
Anbefaler deg å laste ned Nokia Ovi Maps.

Nokia Ovi

Anbefales! Les mer her, eller last den ned ved å gå til http://m.opera.com/mobile fra mobilen.

Opera Mobile 10 beta

Kameratips

Jeg vil nevne noen viktige funksjoner her.

Kjipt!
Her er løsningen å låse minnekortet slik: Velg Meny > Verktøy > Minne.

Picasa 3.5 has just been released to the public. Finally we get the image recognition from picasaweb

Picasa 3.5 has just been released to the public.

Finally we get the image recognition from picasaweb in the offline version. This is great for me as I don’t want to upload my private photos to google. But I really dig face recognition.

I have some hints and some questions about Picasa. I hope I’ll find answers to the questions somewhen.

Hints:
If you tagged a person with the wrong name, you can’t change the name in the column on the right. You can however click on the name below the rectangle within the picture. You can change the name there.

There is an “Accept all suggestions as correct”-button at the top of the person’s section. I didn’t see it for a day, so I wanted to point that out. This makes tagging much faster.

Try to get a feeling what Picasa is capable of. Fuzzy pictures make Picasa group persons together that don’t belong together. In the “unnamed” category I found it useful to open the “people”-sidebar on the right to quickly check whether all pictures within this group are really by the same person. Unfortunately clicking the text field of a person doesn’t select it. This makes selecting it an extra click. That’s annoying. [update]Google released “Version 3.5, Build 79.69 – September 30, 2009″. You can now tab from on group of persons to the next. this will simultaneously mark the person and jump to the name-field. This makes tagging much more convenient.[/update]

Maybe the “expand groups”- feature is even better for those blurry pictures, where you aren’t sure whether Picasa grouped pictures by just _one_ person. You can then select the groups in the sidebar. However, the sidebar will scroll all to often without you initiating it. That’s also annoying.

——
Questions:

Multiuser scenario.
I read that the face information isn’t stored in the IPTC field. I had hoped that this would go in a special google-IPTC field. google has/had(?) those for keywords. Keywords would always be stored in the database, in the IPTC keywords field and in the IPTC google keyword field.
Anyway, I read that face information is stored in the database and in the picasa.ini file. There is a picasa.ini file within every directory.

What happens if I move a folder (together with the picasa.ini file) to a new location? [I want to copy photos older than too years to my external harddrive]

What happens if I copy the folder to a different computer? Can I somehow make this work by copying the contacts.xml which contains the names and the emailaddress for the unique identifier number that is listed in the picasa.ini file? (Picasa 3.0 doesn’t have a subdirectory “contacts” within the Local App Data. Picasa 3.5 has a subdirectory containing the contacts.xml file.)

Can I merge my contacts.xml file with the contacts.xml file of some person I give my photos to?

What happens if I sync my picasa contacts with my gmail contacts (default behaviour) and I merge too contacts within gmail?

Anyone having answers to this questions?

In search for an answer on comes across this information:

jaysiej, a Google Employee, replys to the question “How to Back up Name Tags” with Google’s standard answer you can find in several threads regarding this topic. One of the ways jaysiej says you can back your name tags up, is by copying the whole folder including the picasa.ini. I’m not sure what happens when you copy this to a computer with a different installation of picasa.

Some guy proposed: SOLUTION PROPOSAL: People Tag Sharing

Andreas Vogel wrote a program that copies all information from picasa.ini into the XMP field. I don’t know whether he does this in a private format or whether he tries to emulate Microsofts XMP person format in the best way he can. Further reading suggests, that the program is saving the information using the XMP tag system created by Adobe with the addition of Microsoft XMP namespace Microsoft Photo Region Schema. This should be readable with the Windows Live Photo Gallery. Go to AvPicFaceXmpTagger and read for yourself.

—

When will there be a German version? I want my friends to use it. I guess the German changelog is supposed to be this, but I can’t click the “Änderungen”-link.

Long time I didn’t post a photography article in my blog because I busy to work. The other reason is I don’t have something special that I need to write. This topic actually is a basic for photographer but it is essential ~ since I learn photography by myself, everything I do just read, read, read…… and of course try it. After that I write it on my blog ~ I think it’s good to share your experience for others, life isn’t just for you but also for others.

What is Exif? Exif stands for Exchangeable image file format, it is a specification for image file format used by digital camera. Exif usually content information such as date time information and camera setting. Learn Exif data is a fast way to learn other photography technique, of course learn the technique without good practice is just nothing. Anyway if you interesting about Exif in detail you can go to this link.

Let see sample photo below, I use ACDsee to see this Exif data, anyway you can use other software to open it, or just right click on your photo and choose properties then choose details.

See Exif data in detail, I just explain 2 sections that I think important:

Camera section:

Important things in camera section are camera model and date/time. The quality of the photo depend on the camera and lens ~ I agree photographer never blames his camera but I also agree that good photographer with good camera will produce good photograph. Date/time is important (especially) if you are landscape photographer. For example you want to take photo in Mt. Fuji, it’s better to check other people photo before you go there. If you learn others people photo you’ll get information the right time I should go there to take photo.

Image section:

Almost all data in the image section are important. I usually learn this section from others photograph ~ it’s good to learn the technique and skill from others. If you see my photograph maybe you curious why the bokeh is good, tmaybe you want to ask me – but you think “how come he will tell his technique…”, anyway the answer already written in Exif data – just check the aperture value (f number) and focal length. Maybe you also like to know why the lighting and skin tone also nice ~ just check metering mode, white balance setting, and exposure bias. For sport photography and slow speed photography maybe you need to check shutter speed/exposure time. I can’t explain one by one in detail but I am sure you understand that it should be a reason for a photographer to set some value – learn it and for sure you will produce good photo.

Of course some photographers won’t let you learn his technique, so regarding this article maybe other people will criticize me why you teach people to “steal” such important information. So I will tell you how to delete the Exif data so other people can’t see it. The way is too easy, just use photoshop and click File->Save for Web and Devices. Using this way you can protect your technical photo information. Anyway the option to share or hide your photograph information is on your hand, in my opinion if you like to learn from others, you should like to share to others. Anyway comments, suggestions, critiques are welcome – thanks for visiting my blog.

Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as photographs, video, websites, or RSS feeds and is a form of geospatial metadata. These data usually consist of latitude and longitude coordinates, though they can also include altitude, bearing, accuracy data, and place names.[1]

Geotagging standards in electronic file formats:

JPEG photos

HTML pages: ICBM method, RDF feeds, Microformat, Wikipedia, Geotagging in tag-based systems & Geoblogging

the most famous API and Application on image geotagging is exiftool. [2]

Geotagging with ExifTool[3]
The ExifTool geotagging feature adds GPS tags to images based on data from a GPS track log file. The GPS track log file is loaded, and linear interpolation is used to determine the GPS position at the time of the image, then the following tags are written to the image:

GPSLatitude

GPSLatitudeRef

GPSLongitude

Finally it seems that I’ve found a pure Java Library that can read and write XMP Data to and f

Finally it seems that I’ve found a pure Java Library that can read and write XMP Data to and from JPEGs!

In the past time I’ve been googling for such a library repeatedly. There are quite some libraries for just reading EXIF or IPTC data. Amongst others are Drew Noakes’ library and Imagero. As I am on the verge of adding more metadata functionality to my self-made image database I had 2 issues:

A decision of how to store labels and descriptions to images: a database only without touching the images or IPTC, XMP within images (with cached information to a database). Finally I decided that I wanted to use XMP(or IPTC so that the information is kept close to the image.

A library for this!

What I’ve found so far (incomplete listing as I came across QUITE some libs for reading data):

Imagero and Drew Noakes: Until now I was using Drew Noakes library for reding EXIF data – which was absolutely okay but couldn’t write any data Imagero supports writing of IPTC and XMP (from what I’ve read) and is even free for non-commercial usage. But it’s not true open source and you need to request a licence every year (which works w/out problems!). Judging the work Andrey Kusnetsov (maintainer of Imagero) is putting into it I think, that’s quite acceptable.

Adobe XMP SDK: Adobe – as the inventor of XMP – has released an SDK for reading/writing XMP. Most of the SDK is written in C, the SDK Core is also available in Java (great!) but the functionality to get and write the XMP to and from files .. is not available as Java. Quite annoying.

Apache Sanselan: When searching for Apache Sanselan you most likely end up at the incubator-site which says that the project is in the stat of migrating into apache – the mailinglist also doesn’t work. The simple reason: Sanselan is already a part of Apache Commons. So, this new link is the place to go. The most interesting thing of Sanselan is the format support:

JPEG IPTC support: read (yes), write (soon), Can read IPTC data from exsiting JPEG/JFIF files WITHOUT modifying image data.

JPEG EXIF: read (yes), write (yes), Can read and write EXIF data to and from exsiting JPEG/JFIF files WITHOUT modifying image data.

XMP: read (yes), write (yes), Can read XMP XML (as as String) from [...] JPEG [...]. Can remove, insert and update XMP XML into existing JPEG files.
