Vets in New York have reportedly diagnosed the first known case of H1N1 Swine Flu in a dog.

The LA Times reports…The virus has been found before in other pets, including at least three ferrets, several cats and pigs and a cheetah named Gijima at a wildlife preserve in Santa Rosa.

A couple of the cats died, but most of the animals recovered.

Full story here-http://www.latimes.com/news/nation-and-world/la-sci-swine-flu-dog23-2009dec23,0,2022503.story

They say we should not be alarmed by this alarming development. Reportedly it is a “rare” occurence.

What do you think? …how are we going to get the dogs and cats to wash their hands?

I am kind of concerned, lots of dogs around here!….

Last week, I visited my Dad at his rural ranch for a holiday visit and it was really COLD! The temperatures had dropped to -15 F during the day!

While there we visited Dad’s nearest neighbor Todd, who lives in a woodstove heated mobile home down the road. The conversation was largely about the weather, how many water lines had frozen, how to use heat tracing to keep them from freezing in the future, and how to ensure that the livestock get adequate feed, water, and shelter during the extreme cold. Todd and his family have spent many years in that area and he summarized the conversation, “Heat is Life.”

Because I live in a temperate climate, staying warm for me is mostly inconsequential. I just don’t think about the importance of heat for daily life or survival; I never face bitter-biting cold or frozen pipes. As I listened to Todd talk, his perspective put my own into stark contrast. I was reminded that Scarcity and Abundance differ for each person, each organization, each community, and changes with time (heat, food, shelter, money, time, privilege, opportunity…). Different operating assumptions exist based upon what is Scarce and what is Abundant at any given time. For example, when summer comes and heat becomes abundant, there will be little discussion of frozen pipes and heat tracing among cowboys; something else will have become scarce. Yet, the installation of heat tracing is best done in the summer as part of a plan to prepare for the cold when winter arrives…

This observation became a clear and present long-view reminder:

Consider the ebb and flow of abundance and scarcity – what matters and when?

Mitigate the intensity of scarcity by planning for the expected and unexpected – what can be done to limit the impact?

Have you considered the ebb and flow of abundance and scarcity in your world and created plans to mitigate scarcity?

WA’s peak parent group has slammed a plan to test pre-primary students next year as a waste of

WA’s peak parent group has slammed a plan to test pre-primary students next year as a waste of money, saying it’s “ridiculous” to assess children as young as four.

As part of its strategy to improve literacy and numeracy across WA, the Education Department will start to roll out the 30-minute assessments in the first term in public schools. The Sunday Times can reveal some of the sample questions likely to be used in the so-called “on entry assessments”, which are aimed at picking up early problems.

Pre-primary students in public schools will be asked to: Speak about a certain topic, such as friends or favourite games, for two to three minutes. Estimate how many teddy bears are in a cup. Put objects, from smallest to tallest, in order. Count backwards. Match dots with a number on a page.

WA Council of State School Organisations president Rob Fry attacked the $2 million plan, saying he expected parents to be angered by the “ineffective” results.

“I just find this truly remarkable when you’re dealing with children of such a young age,” he said.

“If you get an exceptionally shy child, you’re asking a four-year-old to talk on a subject for two minutes and some of them won’t want to say anything at that age. Does that mean they’ve got a literacy problem? No, they might be shy.

“It’s ineffective and you are going to get such diverse responses between a child coming from an indigenous community to a child living in a Perth suburb with a highly socially active family.”

School Support Programs executive director David Axworthy said the Education Department based its tests on the Victorian model because it was the “best tool to meet the needs of WA children”. It would also enable shared resources between the states.

“It will leave WA well placed for the introduction of the national curriculum when it is produced in 2011,” he said.

WA Primary Principals Association president Steve Breen supported the plan because it would allow teachers to set benchmarks and adapt their programs to suit children’s needs.

Education Minister Liz Constable said children at risk of falling behind would be identified earlier, allowing urgent action to be taken.

Under the plan, students in 50 schools will be tested in term one before all public schools will have access to the assessments in the final term. From 2011, each pre-primary student will be tested at the start of the year.

Stumbled across a funny video today whilst procrastinating on YouTube made by some guys in the military about gym etiquette and the types of people no one likes to see in the gym. Personally I hate the grunters the most, I don’t mind a bit of noise but sometimes it just gets stupid…..You may come across some very strong guys in a gym so if you want to be friend, not foe then try not to be ‘one of those guys’

The annoying seven

The show off
You know the type – ‘curling’ 30 kg dumbbells with an action that looks like the back is gonna go any second, form, technique and everything goes out of the window with this guy, all that matters is that everyone can see how strong this guy is even if it means they will pick up an injury any second that will keep them out of gym for a long time.

The grunters
A lot of women complain that they simply don’t want to enter a weight training area because of this guy, who needs everyone to know just what he’s going through and what he’s going to be doing with his missus later on in the night…..

The sightseers
Don’t stand directly behind people in the gym and keep your line of sight out of the direction of other people, it can cause health and safety problems and it just downright weird…..much like on the train look somewhere else and give people their own personal space.

The machine lurker
Sometimes the gym can feel like your defending a killing on the African savannah from a pack of scavengers (I don’t know if that’s a good analogy, but oh well!), it’s a free for all as to who gets the equipment next and you don’t want to leave your equipment for fear of the next scavenger coming in to take the machine. The ‘machine lurker’ is an expert at spotting the perfect opportunity to grab your machine whilst you head to the water cooler.

The mirror flexer
The majority of people work out to make themselves look better, there’s nothing wrong with that and the confidence it brings but leave the posing and flexing for a less public place, it blocks the view of others trying to spot themselves in the mirror and can be intimidating for new gym goers too.

The obnoxious spotter
Spotter’s are there to help you push yourself more with the knowledge that your safe if you can’t get out that last rep, so your spotter isn’t much use if he’s chatting to his mate whilst you have a barbell around your neck.

The no towel guy
I’m all for wet t-shirt competition’s, but leave it at the beach, I like to use my towel to keep my body odours off the equipment, not to wipe away the sweat from the previous user’s back.

General gym etiquette

Gym etiquette makes sure that the gym is used safely, everyone gives respect to others and people can use the gym to maximum efficiency, it just makes the place a better place to be and considering your may be spending a good amount of your week there it helps to actually enjoy being there! When entering the gym environment you should always keep in mind some written and unwritten rules which are pretty much universal…..

Hygiene

Keep your sweat off the equipment with a towel!

This is usually a written rule in most gym’s that you wear appropriate clothing, good footwear and most importantly bring a towel with you to wipe away the sweat on machines and equipment, not doing so will get you a telling off from management and a reputation as a smelly gym rat. Many gym’s have a spray nearby along with towels to allow patron’s to keep the area clean, also USE DEODORANT!, everyone sweats, it’s no crime but doing nothing to hide it stinks!

Personal space
This comes down to respect again and is a touchy subject, for example in regards to helping others – you may think it necessary to help someone along who’s struggling on a bench press for example but he/she may not be too happy for you to do without asking, always err on the side of caution and ask, regard that machine/area as their personal space before entering it.

‘Hogging’
Certain gym’s get very busy at specific times and may also have rules regarding as to how much time you can stay on one piece of equipment, my gym for example doesn’t allow you to stay on the treadmill for more than 20 minutes if during peak times. Therefore use time on equipment efficiently and maybe even ‘work in’ with others in the gym between sets to allow everyone their turn.

Spotting/Helping
The fitness industry is friendly and people will mostly try to help others if they are in need, like I said previously you must be careful not to come across as arrogant or ‘elitest’ when trying to help others, if someone genuinely needs help or has a major form problem then very politely point it out or tell an instructor who can pass on your message, better to be safe than sorry.

Replace/put back equipment!
This is one of my personal pet hates, when you use equipment, have the courtesy to put it back where you found it!People who leave equipment lying on the floor especially are a major health and safety hazard and I really can’t be bothered chasing weight plates all around the gym after a set of 10×10 bicep curls, this again comes back to having respect for others!

Chatting on the phone
Many gym’s have a no mobile phones policy and as such only bring your device into the gym if you’re expecting an important call, besides the gym is a place to escape your worries and leave stress behind for an hour, why would you or anyone else in the gym want to hear about your next appointment?

Blocking the mirror
Obviously the most guilty party for this is the poser/flexer as stated up top, but in general, never block someone’s view in the mirror, it is considered extremely rude and will block them from seeing their form, very important on certain exercises like squats.

I never expected to agree with everything that ‘365 Ways to Change the World,’ by Michael Norton, suggested. So it comes as no surprise to me to find a suggestion with which I have an issue – so to speak.

The suggestion for today is about buying Palestinian olive oil as a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people and their plight. However, I am loathe to do this.

Why? Is it because I support the Israeli oppression of the Palestinians? No, I do not support the oppression of the Palestinian people. But neither do I support the anti-Israel rhetoric that seems to be continually doing the rounds.

I would love to see an end to the occupation of lands captured during the 1967 war and do not support Israeli settlements in these areas. However, one does need to remember the fact that Israel did not start that 1967 war and the surrounding nations have largely set an agenda since the birth of the modern Israeli state to crush it. There has also been an unending campaign of terror against the Israeli state and Israel has a right to defend itself.

It would be great to see lasting peace in Palestine and for that to happen both sides need to address the important issues I have mentioned here and others. But it is both sides that need to do it – not just Israel and not just the Palestinian people. It is both sides. That is what I support here.

The H1N1 Swine Flu virus knows no borders, has no boundaries, and has absolutely no respect for religious or cultural traditions.

This year at the annual Hajj to Mecca, Four foreign pilgrims have died of swine flu, the Saudi Health Ministry announced on Saturday.

The Saudi Arabia Health Ministry said none of the four foreign victims had been vaccinated against the H1N1 virus, as has been recommended by The Health Ministry.

An official statement released by the ministry said all had underlying health problems, including cancer and respiratory illness, AFP news agency reported.

Three of the victims died in Medina and one in Mecca.

http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1&section=0&article=128688&d=22&m=11&y=200Over

The BBC is reporting that….up to three million Muslims from around the world take part in the holy pilgrimage every year, but health officials have expressed fears that it could provide a breeding ground for the virus.

Authorities had tried to prepare for any outbreaks by installing thermal cameras at airports and sea terminals, deploying 15,000 additional health workers and ensuring hundreds of extra beds were available.

The Hajj (Arabic: حج‎ Ḥaǧǧ) is a pilgrimage to Mecca. It is currently the largest annual pilgrimage in the world,[1] and is the fifth pillar of Islam, a moral obligation that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to Allah (God).[2] The pilgrimage occurs from the 7th to 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hajj)

The Health Minister has reported that there are 16 other people that have been diagnosed with swine flu and four remain in hospital in “critical condition”.

He added 12 others had recovered following treatment.

The Saudi government has recommended the elderly, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases and children skip the Hajj this year.

The Saudi government has said all pilgrims need a certificate of vaccination before they can apply for a visa.

This is real people, and this disease is spreading worldwide,at a rapid pace.

I encourage everyone to get a H1N1 swine flu shot as soon as you can.The reports of any side effects are exaggerated, and will cause millions of people to perish from the lack of the vaccine.

Any paranoia surrounding any alledged complications from the shot are totally unsubstantiated, and if those people out there insist on not receiving the vaccine, then we as a society should only expect more mounting mass casualties from the swine flu, as exhibited this weekend, unfortunately in Mecca.

If it can happen in Mecca, it can happen anywhere.

Please everyone, wash your hands, and go get the shot.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PHILADELPHIA — Flyers winger Simon Gagne is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks after having abdominal and hip surgery.

Gagne, who missed the past two games, is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday.

“It’s hard to take, but it’s still early in the season,” Gagne said. “I’ll miss close to two months and have time to get back in shape and feel 100 per cent when I’m skating. That’s something I wasn’t able to do right now.”

The 29-year-old Gagne, who has one goal and four assists, has two small hernias in his right groin, the same area that required hernia surgery before the 2007-08 season. He also has had multiple hip operations due to problems linked to the groin.

“He’s had repairs in both of those areas before, so the doctor wants to go through those same incisions — they’re just small incisions — and reinforce and strengthen the area,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. “He will look at the small hernias that we saw in the ultrasound and see if they really are there.”

The Flyers wanted Gagne to have surgery earlier, but Gagne sought a second opinion. The team issued a statement Saturday saying it was still reviewing MRI, ultrasound and bone scan results, and hadn’t made a decision.

The delay “was more to just make sure Simon was feeling comfortable with what was going on,” Holmgren said. “I think deep down, he just wanted to know which is right. It does seem frustrating at times, but at the end of the day you’ve got to trust the player. Simon’s been through a lot and we just wanted to make sure we get it right.”

Added Gagne: “We went to the bottom (of it) to make sure we were making the right decision for myself, the team and the future, to go and do the surgery. We’re going to do the surgery and get on a program to make sure those types of injuries don’t happen to me anymore.”

Danny Briere also has missed two games for the Flyers after tweaking a groin injury and Ryan Parent has missed three games with a groin strain before returning for two periods on Saturday.

He re-injured the groin and could miss another week.

On November 1st, Eastport United Methodist Church had a celebration for All Saints Day. John was recognized.

The day started early with feeding the horses and waking kiddo up to go. I met my friend, Kari, in Havre de Grace. I can’t tell you how much I appreciated her going with us. She adores Nathaniel and he loves playing with her.

When we arrived in Annapolis, I was pleasantly surprised to see Chief Smith! It was so nice to see a friendly familiar face! It was also great to see Pastor MaAn! She is the fire chaplain for Annapolis and spoke at John’s services.

Nathaniel was a superstar during the services. During the first one, he barely had a peep out of him! When the time came to be recognized, I gathered up the little one and the two of us went up. I had visions of him grabbing the candle and the church burning down, but thankfully that wasn’t the case!

Lighting the candle in memory of John

It was an emotional ceremony, but I kept myself together quite well. I focused on Nathaniel.

After the second service we went over to see the union president at Taylor Avenue. Pulling into the driveway was challenging. I thought of all of the times that the Jeep had been there with John. I thought of all of the memories that John had there and how much he loved working for AFD. Being a firefighter was John’s dream job. He pursued his dream till he achieved it. I really respect those who follow their dreams.

The union president had something he wanted to give me. A beautiful memorial medal from IAFF.

IAFF memorial medal

IAFF memorial medal

Most of the firefighters were on a call, but they soon returned. It was great to see familiar faces and we all had breakfast/lunch together. The conversation turned to John’s unique eating habits. No lima beans. Meatloaf containing green peppers must have all of the peppers removed. He even had a unique way of eating potato chips… little tiny pieces first, then the medium sized pieces, and then he broke the larger chips into smaller pieces and ate them. I recollected how at an Italian restaurant years ago, the two of us both ordered spaghetti because it was one of the few things on the menu that we recognized. When the food arrived he cut his spaghetti into quadrants. Then selected one quadrant and cut it into tiny bite sized pieces and ate it and then repeated. Everybody at the table took notice of his eating style. Poor Nathaniel misses out… John would have his cut his food into perfect toddler sized pieces. Mommy… well let’s just say… not so perfect in that department.

Kari, asked if John was OCD. I paused. I never really thought of him as OCD. Anal would perhaps be a better description. But, anal seems so unkind. Debbie quantified it with “everything had a place and everything in its place.” That combined with some analness was probably the best way to describe John. On top of that, John expected you to know where that place and have everything put back in the order it was– but you probably never even realized that there was an order in the first place. I always found it ironic that John could be so particular about things, but at the same time he did have some of his things that stayed in piles as well.

There is the theory that opposites attract. That would be how John and I were opposite. I’m not a good house keeper. I’m not neat & tidy. The only thing that I’m particular about is how my hose lays in the winter… I get really anal about that. But that is analness by necessity. Carrying water for seven horses is NOT fun and rather time consuming, especially when I have reynauds and have yet to find the magical pair of gloves that keeps my fingers from freezing and burning (all of the time).

John also had very high standards. He expected things to be done right. Quite frequently people didn’t meet his expectations. He also had people that he was friends with that he liked a lot as people, but not very much as firefighters. You had to be damn good at firefighting to get his nod of approval. It often was hard to live up to his standards. He also expected you to know how to do something or to have it done without him mentioning it. This could frustrate the crap out of me. I’m the type that needs to be talked through something I’m unfamiliar with or haven’t done in a while. I also am not very observant- unless we’re talking about horses. We never fought about it (we weren’t the fighting type), but we did have some frustration and friction.

I think Nathaniel mellowed him a little. He was great at breaking things down for Nathaniel and encouraging him. He’d tell me that I expected too much from him. Of course the irony of the whole thing is now I find myself expecting a lot out of Nathaniel and have to remind myself… he’s only a year old and for the most part a super good kid… he’s not going to be perfect all of the time.

Funny thing was, for most of our relationship, I couldn’t stand his “particularness.” It could grate on my last nerve. Of course, I’m sure he couldn’t stand my lack of “particularness” either.

Ironic thing is that towards the end, I got to the point that I could tell what John wanted before he said it (most of the time). I knew he liked things tidy, so when I was thinking, I’d have his hospital room straightened up and his tray the way he liked it. Grant it, I did have to think about it. I also would tell John to talk me through as I was helping him get into and out of bed. By letting him know that I needed that extra guidance we were on the same page. Sometimes the key to good relationships is knowing the differences and finding out how to bridge the gap and meet in the middle at a happy medium.

Fox news is lucky that they promote their terrorism, sedition, and treasonist acts against the Unite

Fox news is lucky that they promote their terrorism, sedition, and treasonist acts against the United States government, under the safety and freedom that they exploit, yet are guaranteed to them, under our Constitution.

Obviously, they are a neocon zealot wing of the Republican party, like the Nazi party, that is committed to destroying the very fabric of our country, and replace it with their bigoted, racist form of government. They also want to end freedom for minorities, and turn back time, and return America to the Jim Crow policies that were more oppressive than the apartheid system that failed South Africa.

Our country is one of the few that allow the news services to incite treasonist acts against the government, and it’s people. The following report from the AP uncovers how Saudi Arabia deals with an irresponsible press…

Rozanna al-Yami, a Saudi television journalist, has been sentenced to 60 lashes with a whip, for her role in producing, editing, and airing a news report about the sexual exploits of a Saudi man, Mazen Abdul-Jawad, sexual exploits.

Openly discussing sex is taboo and against the law in the notoriously conservative Islamic Arab nation of Saudi Arabia. The rights of women are limited, and there is absolutely no promise of freedom of the press.

In the program, broadcast in July on the Lebanese satellite channel LBC, the Saudi man Mazen Abdul-Jawad, described his active sex life, and showed sex toys, which the station blurred. The same court sentenced Mr. Abdul-Jawad to five years in prison and 1,000 lashes.

The program scandalized this conservative country, and the government shut down LBC’s two offices in the kingdom.

Abdul Jawad claims that the LBC edited and re-contextualized a long video shoot into a short segment to present him in the worst possible light.

“LBC has violated printing and publications regulations by portraying Abdul Jawad in a bad manner, particularly as it goes against the religious values and traditions of Saudi Arabia. It was the channel that violated these values first when it filmed the segment.

The channel also violated Saudi law by operating from an unlicensed Jeddah office.”

The journalist, Rozanna al-Yami, 22, is believed to be the first female Saudi journalist to be given such a punishment. The charges included involvement in preparing the program and advertising it on the Internet. Ms. Yami said she had worked as a coordinator for the program but had not worked on the episode in question. She said the judge, in the western city of Jidda, had handed down the sentence “as a deterrence.”

“I am too frustrated and upset to appeal the sentence,” Ms. Yami said.

Three of Mazen Abdul-Jawad friends who appeared on the show got two years each.

The lawyer for Mazen Abdul-Jawad is complaining about the lack of severity in the punishment for the female journalist al-Yami, expressing that it would not be a deterrent unless it was a harsher sentence.

LBC has made no comment about the cases. LBC is part-owned by the Saudi media mogul and billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.

A free press is looking even better to me now. Do not take our freedoms, and liberties for granted, and most of all, use them responsibly, but at all times, speak your mind, without the threat of imprisonment.
