(MountEverest.net) With only Annapurna left, Oh Eun Sun is currently leading the world’s14×8000er female rank.

But who was the first woman to summit an 8000er? And what is the history of women in Himalaya? ExWeb’s Rodrigo Granzotto Peron continues his interesting crunch of the Himalayan stats, focusing this time on the ladies of thin air.

Women’s 8000ers
By Rodrigo Granzotto Peron

I – First Female Ascents on 8000ers:

EV – 1975 – Junko Tabei (JAP)
K2 – 1986 – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL), Liliane Barrard (FRA)
KG – 1998 – Ginette Harrison (UK)
LH – 1996 – Chantal Mauduit (FRA)
MK – 1990 – Kitty Calhoun (USA)
CH – 1984 – Vera Komarkova, Margita Sterbova (CZE)
DH – 1982 – Lutgaarde Vivijs (BEL)
MN – 1974 – Naoko Nakaseko, Masako Uchida, Meiko Mori (JAP)
NP – 1984 – Liliane Barrard (FRA)
AN – 1978 – Vera Komarkova (CZE), Irene Miller (USA)
GI – 1982 – Marie-Jose Valençot (FRA)
BP – 1983 – Krystyna Palmowska (POL)
GII – 1975 – Anna Okopinska, Halina Kruger-Syrokomska (POL)
SH – 1981 – Junko Tabei (JAP)

First: Manaslu – last: Kangchenjunga – Everest: two (!) female ascents in 1975

The table shows that the first 8000er summited by women was not Everest.

Members of an all-female Japanese expedition, Naoko Nakaseko, Masako Uchida and Meiko Mori topped-out Manaslu in 1974, one year before fellow Japanese Tabei Junko completed her Everest feat.

Junko became world famous for being the first woman to summit Everest on May 16th, 1975 (via the south side). Few know that only 10 days later, Tibetan Ms. Phantog topped-out Everest via the north side.

The last 8000er to be summited by a woman for the first time was, very recently, Kangchenjunga in 1998.

First female doubles: Junko, Vera and Liliane (Wanda permitting)

By her summit of Shisha Pangma in 1981, Junko became the first to bag two female 8000er virgins.

Three years later in 1984, Czech Vera Komarkova summited another female first – Cho Oyu – after becoming the first woman to summit Annapurna in 1978.

However, I have also included French Liliane Barrard, who completed the first female ascents of Nanga Parbat (1984) and K2 (1986).

It is a controversial subject though as K2’ first female ascent is credited to Wanda Rutkiewicz who actually climbed together with Liliane on the summit push. Wanda was faster and topped out a mere one hour ahead of the French.

In my opinion, the two women deserve to share the achievement and I believe Wanda would not oppose to this, had she been alive.

II – Female 8000ers historical ranking

01×8000er – Naoko Nakaseko, Masako Uchida and Meiko Mori (JAP) [1974]
02×8000ers – Junko Tabei (JAP) [1981]
03×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1986]
04×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1987]
05×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1989]
06×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1990]
07×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1991]
08×8000ers – Wanda Rutkiewicz (POL) [1991]
09×8000ers – Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner (AUT) [2006]
10×8000ers – Nives Meroi (ITA) [2007]
11×8000ers – Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner (AUT) [2008]
12×8000ers – Edurne Pasaban (SPA) [2009]
13×8000ers – Oh Eun-Sun (S-K) [2009]
14×8000ers – ???

Wanda’s kingdom

The 80’s and the 90’s were dominated by the first woman 8000er collector, the astonishing Wanda Rutkiewicz, widely considered the most talented high-altitude lady climber ever.

Polish Wanda summited Everest (1978), Nanga Parbat (1985), K2 (1986), Shisha Pangma (1987), Gasherbrum II (1989), Gasherbrum I (1990), Cho Oyu (1991) and Annapurna (1991). Intended to become her 9th 8000er, Kangchenjunga took Wanda’s life one year later – and the world lost an icon.

It would take 15 years for another woman to equal Rutkiewicz’s record.

Friday, final: Individual and National female ranking

Author’s Notes:
a) The lists are updated to October/2009.
b) Only confirmed main summits are accepted. Non-proved claims, fore-summits (like Shisha Pangma Central, Broad Peak’s Rocky/Fore-Summit, etc.) and disputed summits are discharged. Some facts were proof-checked with Miss Hawley’s Himalayan Database.
c) Some summits are still being investigated – so some entries may be revisited in the following months, with possibly a few corrections to be done.

In order to drive across the desert to the remarkable oasis town of Siwa we would – at the request of the government – have to travel in convoy with a departing tour group. Surprisingly our convoy was led by a familiar face, proving once again just how small the world is.

I’m sure many of you have marvelled at the years of speculation and numerous unconfirmed sightings of Freddie Mercury, but like myself have probably dismissed them out of hand. However, I can confidently confirm that the great man did in fact manage to escape his demons and is now living in exile in the Egyptian desert.

With Pendulum blaring out of the speakers our grey hairs grew in direct correlation with the increased number of tank slappers as we tore through the desert at 120kmph in the apparently reliable wake of Freddie. The irony of being lead through the desert by the dead didn’t go unnoticed – lets just hope Siwa is to die for!

Our initial choice of eatery in the lawless state that was Bawiti was aptly named ‘Popular Restaurant’. Confident of the chef’s ability and almost certain that the restaurant’s name was well earned we rested our weary legs and perused the menu. Upon recoiling at the initial price of 30 per head we left with our offer of 10 ringing in the owner’s ears. This offer clearly narked him as we spent the majority of our time in the town being heckled.

Piotr Morawski – jeden z najwybitniejszych polskich himalaistów. Tryptyk Himalajski i Nanga Parbat (8125 m).

Kobieta z wielką pasją życia i nieposkromioną energią.

70 lat później, w maju 2009 roku polscy alpiniści ponownie wyruszyli do Indii. Marcin Miotk, Grzegorz Mróz i Jan Lenczowski (kierownik wyprawy, wnuk Jakuba Bujaka – pierwszego zdobywcy Nanda Devi East) zaprezentują relację z tegorocznej wyprawy, której celem było powtórzenie drogi Polaków z 1939 roku.

Interesującym elementem pokazu będzie prezentacja oryginalnego materiału filmowego z wyprawy w 1939 roku, odnalezionego w Londynie po kilkudziesięciu latach poszukiwań.

(MountEverest.net) Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and husband Ralf Dujmovits are aiming for Everest north face next spring, according to local media.

Ralf and Gerlinde, together with regular mate Hirotaka Takeuchi, attempted the Supercouloir on Everest north side back in 2005. The climb was aborted when Hiro showed symptoms of HACE.

“I’ve been dreaming of Everest’s north face since I stood at its base back in 2005 – I just wanted to return there with my husband again,” Gerlinde told Neue Zürcher Zeitung on Friday. “Everest south side is too crowded, and most climbers there are on supplementary O2 – I’d rather avoid that side of the mountain,” Gerlinde told media after a lecture at Salzburg’s Film Festival.

The “inexistent race”

Ralf bagged his 14th 8000er on Lhotse in spring this year with Gerlinde. This time he hopes to summit Everest without supplementary O2.

The peak would mark Gerl’s 13th 8000er. With just Everest and K2 to go, Gerlinde said, ”I would be happy if Miss Oh summited Annapurna, so I could forget about that inexistent competition everybody keep asking me about! I don’t want to be the first, I am not giving it a thought: I just want to climb beautiful mountains via beautiful routes – such as Everest’s north face.”

As for other 2010 plans: “I’d rather focus completely on Everest until I’m done with it. Just in case though, I’ll be applying for a K2 climbing permit anyway,” Gerl was quoted by Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Upon arriving in the oasis town of Bawiti we headed deep into the lush palm groves in order to find a suitable campsite. Thankfully a large hand painted sign soon loomed out of the darkness proclaiming that the Desert Rose Eco Lodges were located just 100 metres from the sand covered road. With our interest pricked we pulled up outside the bland gatehouse and rang the dusty bell.

We were soon greeted by two bumbling idiots who proceeded to lurch awkwardly from one light switch to another, before failing miserably in their attempt to unlock the doors to the surrounding lodges. In this frantic hive of inactivity we were afforded a little time to take in our surroundings – a dangerous pastime.

Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a luxury courtyard of self-contained lodges each boasting a four-poster bed, an ensuite, a sofa bed and an ornate writing desk. Clearly this was going to be out of our price range however the lodges were deserted which would hopefully act in our favour.

Mansourd, the suave manager, arrived straddling a carpeted motorcycle piloted by his able assistant and one time Nobel Peace Prize winning chef. I’m sure you’ll agree that this is a rather bizarre claim but one which we chose not to question in order to protect the fine balance between the key holder and we the weary desperados.

The manager’s opening gambit saw him slap a fairly reasonable offer on the table which primarily consisted of the following numbers; 2-3-0. However, after a heated discussion we found ourselves just 150 Egyptian pounds lighter and looking forward to spending an enjoyable night cloaked in luxury.

Needless to say Mansourd’s handshake was distinctly limper than his initial fevered greeting.

By the time we had reached the entrance to the tomb the ticket office had closed preventing us from entering possibly one of the greatest wonders of the world. However, as I’m sure many of you are aware that when travelling you become infinitely more cunning. So after a little money changed hands we were ushered down the steep and rather narrow entrance tunnel.

The deathly silence one associates with the resting place of the dearly departed was rudely shattered by a roaring air-conditioning system crudely tacked to the carefully crafted stone work of the towering pyramid. Descending the dusty, cramped tunnel we could only assume we were entering a coal seam manically mined by an army of midgets.

The end result was a simple rectangular room housing a small stone tomb. My advice would be to keep your loose change firmly in your pockets.

Stefan Teplan und Björn Klauer auf Trekking-Tour durch die arktische Eiswüste: Weiße Wildnis statt grauer Mauern. 50 Huskys statt 100 PS.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-71 " title="Weltbild 2, 99, S. 25" src="http://reisereportagen.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/weltbild-2-99-s-251.jpg?w=300" alt="Unterwegs in weißer Weite.

(MountEverest.net) To be a journalist worth your salt does not come down to witty articles, flashy assignments, big name newspapers or pretty awards. A true reporter provides equal scrutiny to all, no matter personal preference.

This can be a difficult task.

“Pending,” ruled ExWeb about Andrew Lock’s Shisha Pangma summit when the climber, bound by a contract with Australian media, could not provide summit images for our stats checkers.

We had followed Andrew’s climbs for years, and were happy to break news on his final 8000+meters summit. In the aftermath of lies reported on Shisha during the fall 2009 season though, we were forced to ask every team claiming to have reached any high point on the mountain for details – including Andrew.

“I don’t make false claims”

“Let’s be very clear: I have returned to Shisha Pangma on five expeditions to make the true summit – I don’t make false claims,” says Andrew about his final 8000er, bagged on October 2nd.

Lock and British mate Neil Ward were the only to reach Shisha’s Main summit this fall, after climbing from the north side via a variation of Iñaki’s route. Hard weather forced the two climbers to improvise an open bivouac on descent.

While a debrief was posted on Lock’s website on October 8th, the climber got a contract with the Australian Geographic Society for a complete article and photos to be published in January – so no summit pics were available on his website. “Anyway, we were in cloud (as we summited), so there was very little view,” Andrew later told ExplorersWeb.

But here goes an image shot by Andrew from Shisha’s Main summit, pointing along the ridge towards the Central, including details and GPS readings from summit day.

Andrew & Neil’s summit day, step by step

“Neil and I traversed east across the north face from camp 3 to a rib pretty much in line with the true summit, and then went straight up,” Andrew explained.

”Once we’d traversed east under the north face from camp 3 we climbed fairly directly straight up. When we came up under the 3 fingers of rock at about 7600 metres, we climbed to the left of them (to the east) and continued straight up to the summit ridge.”

Topping-out from the east side of the ridge

“When we hit the ridge about 2pm, we were to the east of the main summit. That means we were NOT between the Main summit and Central summit; instead we were on the part of the ridge that most of the routes on the south face come up to. It was quite broad, but as we started up towards the Main Summit, the ridge became quite sharp.”

“We climbed to a point probably only 25 metres in altitude below the true summit but then had a long traverse to the summit. On that section, we traversed under a long square-shaped serac. When we finally got to the end of that serac, we were right beneath the true summit – and it was an easy walk up to the top.”

Worsening weather and GPS readings

”The weather was clear when we started in the morning and was good pretty much until we got to the 3 fingers of rock. Then it started to cloud over. It was patchy cloud though and we could still see glimpses of the ridge that goes from Camp 3 to the central summit.”

“I carried a Garmin Foretrex GPS and took 3 readings on the summit day:”

“The first waypoint was filed up was at the end of the traverse across the north face from camp 3 where we started to head straight up the face through the seracs. The reading showed N 28 deg 21.744 min; E 85 deg 46.875 min; Altitude 7454 metres.”

“Second was where we finally topped out from the north face onto the main summit ridge (to the east of the main summit, NOT between the main summit and the central summit). It read N 28 deg 21.114 min; E 85 deg 46.891 min; Altitude 7951 metres.”

“Final reading was checked on the Main Summit, where I got the following data: N 28 deg 21.124 min; E 85 deg 46.772 min; Altitude 8020 metres.”

Notes on the route

“Looking at previous routes on the area, I reckon that Neil and I traversed across the face via the route previously followed by the Russians, before heading directly up the face via the Inaki route, and then continued to the top close to, the Austrian route. So our line was a combination of 3 existing routes.”

“I DID IT!,” Andrew Lock reported from Shisha’s BC on October 4th. “I summitted the true summit of Shishapangma at 5.05pm, October 2nd, together with Neil Ward.” The achievement made Andrew the 18th man to ever summit the 14 8,000ers, and the first Australian.

Himalayan quests such as Andrew Lock’s demand major sacrifice – often spanning decades – in terms of financial and private life, not to mention the very real risk of death.

False summit claims steal not only from these mountaineers, but every honest soul in the mountains. The community has in later years commenced self-policing where the top climbers – leading by example – often are subject to the hardest scrutiny.

During our ‘staycation’ we attempted a variety of seating arrangements each as uncomfortable as the last. To save time I’ll give you a short run down of our attempts to enjoy the numerous and rather tortuous city journeys.

Seating arrangements:

Two in the front & four in the rear.
Three in the front & three in the rear.
Two in the front, three in the rear and one sat on the laps of the three in the rear.
Two in the front, three in the rear and one in the boot.
Two in the front, three in the rear and one sat on the open windowsill of the door.

Results:

Numerous dead legs.
Several electric shocks from dodgy wiring found beneath the dashboard.
One near miss with a passing cyclist.
One extremely hot boy in the boot.

Mountain tops are that simple. Or are they? Himalayan quests demand major sacrifice, often spanning decades, not to mention the very real risk of death. False summit claims steal not only from serious climbers but from every honest soul in the mountains. Because most every summit claim on Shisha last month was countered by contradictory reports, ExplorersWeb editors launched a major investigation of them all.

ExWeb’s fall 2009 Shisha Pangma special, part 2: Central Summit, virtually there? Due perhaps to the big number of “summits” actually ending below the knife ridge, Shisha Pangma is a vastly underestimated climbing target. There were only two summits this fall, and only one “Central summiteer.” But how low below even the Central point do claims actually stretch these days? Check the answer in part 2.

ExWeb fall 2009 Shisha Pangma special report final: false summit claims – and the winner is... Among all the incomplete, inaccurate or plainly wrong statements from Shisha Pangma this season, Annelie Pompe and Johanna Öhrn’s story got the cake. Aided by local and international mountaineers, one Swedish climbing veteran finally did what local journalists failed: unveiling a mess of false statements, contradictions, and pictures both stolen and manipulated.

Shisha Pangma TRUE summit report: and the winner is… “Pending,” ruled ExWeb about Andrew Lock’s Shisha Pangma summit when the climber could not provide images due to a contract with the Australian Geographic Society. But when an image from Shisha’s Main summit including details and GPS readings from summit day arrived, it became clear that Andrew and Neil were the only Shisha Pangma summiteers this fall. The achievement made Andrew the 18th man to ever summit the 14 8,000ers, and the first Australian.

Tomaz Humar Lost His amazing life came to an end on an unknown peak, in the company of local kitchen boy Jagat, on a climb very few knew about. Air Zermatt Swiss rescue team Pilot Robert Andenmatten and rescue-climber Simon Anthamatten finally found Tomaz at 5600 meters on the south wall of Langtan Lirung on November 14. Robert dropped Simon with a 25 meter static rope on the accident site but it was too late. Tomaz had died, apparently after breaking his leg in a fall.

The good guys In the relatively short time that ExplorersWeb has been around, we have lost too many great climbers, and friends. Tomaz Humar was one of the very first we interviewed, in 2003. Humar’s temperament and climbs left few indifferent and Tomaz a man to be remembered in climbing history. Read ExWeb’s American editorial and European profile about the climber plus a word from Simone Moro.

K2 pioneer Lino Lacedelli gone Achille Compagnoni died earlier this year at age 94. Friday, Lino followed Achille for one last time, after making peace if not with Bonatti, then at least with himself. Italian K2 pioneer Lino Lacedelli died on November 20, a few weeks shy of 84 years.

ExWeb interview with Bill Hanlon: One of the biggest difficulties in his job? “Access,” said Bill, “as result of political and geographical reasons.” One of the Everest summiteers who will challenge themselves on skis this Antarctica season; Bill Hanlon does all these extreme adventures to promote and develop public health and primary health care projects in remote and high altitude communities. Last week he spoke to ExWeb’s Correne Coetzer about his Basic Health International (BHI) Foundation as well as skiing to the South Pole. “Our medical work emphasizes improvisations and working with limited resources,” Hanlon told ExWeb, “This trip will parallel many similar issues.”

Preparing for Mongolia with a big list of “to do’s”, “might do’s” and ”have done’s” With less than five months before his Mongolia trek starts, “This business of searching for sponsors, I should explain, is a very time consuming duty,” Ripley Davenport told ExWeb’s Correne Coetzer who caught up with him during his preparations.

Eric Larsen, “The job of explorers in the 21st century is not to conquer these places but to protect them.” Eric is skiing to the South Pole at the moment, but this is part of a bigger plan; to complete the Three Poles in 365 days. Before he left for Antarctica Larsen spoke in length to ExWeb’s Correne Coetzer about the quest and its mission.

Popular re-run: Hercules Inlet start point – leaving from where exactly? This season there are three start points to the South Pole, the “classic” start from Hercules Inlet, the somewhat shorter route from the Ronne-Filchner Ice Shelf and the longer route from Berkner Island. Last week ExWeb posted a re-run about the Hercules Inlet Start Point.

Call to preserve the South Pole Dome The Dome at the South Pole has been the prominent feature at the Pole, sheltering as many as 200 scientists and support workers in the summer seasons and 50 winter-overs for 30 years. Replaced by the new building, the Dome is scheduled to be demolished in the next few months, but a small group of polar veterans is trying to preserve the structure.

Patagonia Ice Cap wrap-up: The Norwegians on the Northern Patagonia Ice Cap and the Germans on the Southern Ice Cap reported most spectacular views – mountains, forests and glaciers. The beautiful terrain though was not easy and progress slow.

MOUNTAIN EXPEDITIONS – MOUNTAINEERING IN NEPAL with Mountain Sherpa Trekking and Expeditions, Sherpa Guides Company.

Mountaineering is considered the keystone activity that Nepal offers to the climbers than any country in the world. The eight out of the fourteen 8000m peaks lie in Nepal including Mt. Everest (8000m), the highest peak in the world. Ever since, the country opened its peaks to climbers in 1949, the mountaineering activity has become the most popular trend of alluring thousands of adventures seekers to Nepal every Year. The pioneer of all, this Mountaineering was the major starter of tourism in Nepal that dates back to the Successful conquering of mount Annapurna by Mourice Herzog in 1950 and the Mt. Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. Since then, the record Setting and glory hunt of conquering these peaks have been remarked as the most prestigious earnings and so has been the ultimate dream of any climber to attain. Mountaineering in Nepal is also considered dangerous and life threatening due to the unprecedented Climatic Change and other hazards led by high altitudes. So, If you join any expedition with Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expedition, our highly experience Sherpa Climber will give you fully safety instructions before the Expedition began. This is very important to minimize the risk of unprecedented climate Change. The Nepal Himalaya has also remained as an inspiration from ages for people from every walk of lives varying from poets to researchers, climbers to trekkers, philosophers to saints and nature Lovers to adventures.

MT.EVEREST EXPEDITION

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world measuring 8,848m (29,028 feet) in height. It was first climbed on May 29, 1953 by a New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal. Mount Everest is also known by the Tibetan name Chomolangma (goddess mother of the snows), and by the Nepali name Sagarmatha (Mother of the Universe).
Everest had been attempted many times before the important expeditions being that of 1922, 1923 and 1924.The body of George H.L. Mallory who died in an earlier attempt (1924), was discovered on the mountain in 1999. More than 600 climbers from 20 countries have climbed the summit by various routes from both north and south. Climbers’ ages have ranged from nineteen years to sixty. Climbing on Everest is very strictly regulated by both the Nepalese and Chinese governments. Climbing Everest and Treks to Everest Base Camp are becoming increasingly popular on both the north and south sides of the mountain. On the north side, a Buddhist monastery is one of two whose locations were selected specifically to allow religious contemplation of the great peak. The other side is the Thyangboche Monastery in Nepal. The once active Rongbuk monastery in Tibet has required much rejuvenation from the destruction it experienced following China’s invasion of Tibet.

KANCHENJUNGA EXPEDITION

Kanchenjunga (8,586) is the third highest mountain in the world. From 1838 until 1839 was believed to be the highest. It is an enormous mountain-mass and many satellite peaks rise from its narrow icy ridges. It is located on the border of Nepal and Sikkim, just 46 miles northwest of Darjeeling. It is the most easterly of the great 8,000-meter peaks of the Himalaya.
Though not successfully climbed until 1955, it was first attempted in 1905, but four members of that international party were killed in an avalanche. As inspiring as Kanchenjunga’s beauty is at least the first three parties to ascend the mountain never attempted the final few feet to the summit out of voluntary respect or those who considered the summit sacred. The successful British expedition of 1955 set the standard by stopping a few feet short of the actual summit, in honor of the local religion.

LHOTSE EXPEDITION

Lhotse (8,516) is the fourth highest mountain in the world. Its long east-west crest is located immediately south of Mount Everest and the summits of the two mountains are connected by the South Col, a vertical ridge that never drops below 8,000 meters. Lhotse is sometimes mistakenly identified as the south peak of the Everest massif. No serious attention was turned to climbing Lhotse until after Everest had finally been ascended. Lhotse was first climbed in 1956 by two Swiss, fritz Luchsinger and Ernest Reiss.
In addition to the main summit, there are two subsidiary peaks, Lhotse Shar, which is immediately east of the main summit, and Nuptse, a high peak on the mountain’s west ridge.

MAKALU EXPEDITION

Makalu (8,463) is the fifth highest mountain in the world. It is an isolated peak, located just 14 miles east of Mount Everest. Its size alone is impressive, but its structure, that of a perfect pyramid with four sharp ridges, make this mountain all the more spectacular.
It has proved to be a challenging climb, as only five of its first sixteen attempts were successful. Previously, it had been admired and studied by several Everest parties, but like so many other giants in Khumbu region, it was not attempted until the summit of Everest had been attained in 1954. A French group first climbed Makalu in year 1955.
Chomo Lonzo (25,650 ft.) is a subsidiary peak of Makalu, rising just north of the higher summit, separated by a narrow saddle.

CHO OYU EXPEDITION

Cho Oyu (8,201) is the sixth highest mountain in the world, located a short distance to the west from Everest and Lhotse (the fourth highest) in the Khumbu region of Eastern Nepal along the Tibetan border. Its towering peak stands with Everest well above the surrounding mountains. It became a familiar landmark to climbers ascending Everest’s north face. Just west of Cho Oyu is the Nangpa La, a 19,000-foot glacier pass, and the main trade route between the khumbu Sherpas and Tibet. Cho Oyu’s proximity to the Nangpa la has earned it the distinction among some climbers as being the easiest 8,000 meter peak. It was the third such peak climbed, and the first climbed in autumn by two Australian.

DHAULAGIRI EXPEDITION

Dhaulagiri (8,167), whose name means White Mountain, is the seventh highest mountain in the world. It is an enormous Himalayan massif, located in north central Nepal. After its discovery by the western world in 1808, it replaced Ecuador’s Chimborazo (20,561 ft.) as the postulated highest mountain in the world. It maintained this standing for nearly 30 years, until the discovery of Kanchenjunga, which was then falsely believed to be the world’s highest mountain.
Dhaulagiri’s crest stretches for thirty miles, lending structure to an otherwise tangled topography of twisting ridges, glaciers, and ice falls. Along the main crest, several pyramid-shaped peaks rise. Four of these summits, numbered form east to west, rise above 25,000 feet.
In 1960, the Swiss/Australian expedition who first reached the summit did so despite their airplane having crashed during the approach. This was the first Himalayan climb supported by an airplane, although the plane was subsequently abandoned on the mountain.

MANASLU EXPEDITION

Manaslu (8, 163) is the high peak of the Gorkha massif, and is the eight highest mountains in the world. It is located about 40 miles east of Annapurna, the tenth highest mountain. The mountains long ridges and valley glaciers offer feasible approaches from all directions, and it culminates in a peak that towers steeply above its surroundings landscape, and is dominant features when seen from afar. The name Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa and can be roughly translated as mountain of the spirit. An all-female Japanese expedition successfully ascended to the summit, thereby becoming the first women to climb an 8,000-meter peak.

ANNAPURNA EXPEDITION

Annapurna (8,091) is an enormous Himalayan massif, the tenth highest mountain in the world. In 1950, it became the first 8,000 meter mountain to be successfully climbed. It is located east of great gorge cut through the Himalaya by the Kali Gandaki River. The mountain has the glaciers on its western and north western slopes, which drain into this gorge.
Annapurna is a Sanskrit name that can be translated as goddess of harvests or more simply the provider. Of Annapurna’s many highs peaks, five are labeled using some variations of the name Annapurna. Of these, the two highest (Annapurna I and II), stand like bookends at the western and eastern ends of the massif.

Es gibt also kaum Kältebrücken.

Jerzy Kukuczka: Greatest Polish Alpinist Tribute.

Jerzy ‘Jurek’ Kukuczka, the famous Polish climber, has entered mountaineering history as ‘the second man to conquer all 14, 8000ers” after Reinhold Messner, lost on Lhotse in 1989.

There have been a lot of rivalries surrounding Everest over the years, some so subtle they went unnoticed, some so blatant they erupted into a full-fledged battle-of-wills at base camp. Few however endured as long or seemed as heroic as the battle between Jerzy “Jurek” Kukuc zka and Reinhold Messner during the early 80s. Both men were attempting to be the first climber to summit all 14 peaks in the world over 8,000 meters.

While Messner would finish a year ahead of Kukuczka, it would take Messner 16 years to complete this feat compared to only 8 for Kukuczka.
