Luego de casi 4 años sin noticia alguna, la mítica banda Danesa, “Kashmir” a dicho que su proximo album sera lanzado en febrero del año que viene, mas precisamente el 1 de febrero. Aunque todavia nisiquiera se conoce el nombre o el tracklist, lo unico que se conoce es el primer sencillo de ese futuro álbum, el sencillo solo esta disponible para comprar en Dinamarca, y se llama Mouthful of Wasps, la verdad una muy buena canción, con algunos toques mas electrónicos de lo que nos tenían acostumbrados…

18.00-19.30: Conversas 1: Partindo do ponto de vista: a construção da paisagem e as inter-relações entre som, imagem, arquitectura e espaço: Emanuel Pimenta/PT/CH e Carsten Stabenow/NL: FBAUL, Largo da Academia Nacional de Belas-Artes

Infelizmente o Emanuel Pimenta  não pôde estar presente mas foi “substituído” pelo designer sound designer Geert-Jan Hobijn.

Falou-se muito sobre espaços arquitectónicos e como se podem fazer instalações mudando apenas pequenos pormenores, ou grandes, isto tudo de acordo com as propriedades acústicas do espaço. Ver os sítios como verdadeiros instrumentos em vez de espaços que têm som.

Também se falou sobre “instrumentos” como um aspirador, que retirados fora do contexto deste tipo de música experimental não têm sentido, mas que vendo as performances, e o que se pode fazer com estes barulhos, se pode mudar a maneira de ver, e também sentir esta música.

Por último falou-se sobre vários tipos de tecnologias que estão a ser desenvolvidas e que interferem ainda mais com os sentidos como deixar-nos tontos interferindo com o o nosso ouvido interno, e sons que são sentidos por vibrações que passam pelos nossos ossos são exemplos destas tecnologias que nos irão permitir ainda uma maior imersão na música.

18.00-19.30: Conversas 2: Estados e Sensibilidades Elevados: Aumentar a nossa Consciência e Conhecimento Sensorial: Terike Haapoja/FI e Evelina Domnitch e Dmitry Gelfand/NL, FBAUL, Largo da Academia Nacional de Belas-Artes

Esta conversa teve uma perspectiva bastante científica, e em como ver a arte como ciência e vice-versa. Vários trabalhos que nos mostraram são sobre propriades e fenómenos físicos, que podem no entanto ser vistos como instalações, e experimentações media, e arte pura e simplesmente.

Tentar retirar o rótulo de ciência sobre estas experiências, que sendo no entanto complicadas do ponto de vista científico, podem ser apreciadas pela sua beleza.

This probably isn’t a super-group by most people’s standards, but Thom Yorke’s new touring band is pure-dynamite concentrate. I don’t know what kind of sedative Yorke crushed into Flea’s yogurt parfait to make him so tame, but it worked– there is definitely no out of place Flea cock-lassoing during any of Yorke’s morose set. The two actually play off each other pretty well; Flea really brings the bass that’s buried in some of Yorke’s work out in the open, and even inspires a sullen Yorke to jam for chrissakes. What is a cute little crescendo-reprise in the album version of The Eraser becomes a dueling static guitars between Yorke and Flea in this live set (4:30 in).

I was tipped off to Dragon Turtle by Jessi Hector, of Goldest Egg, who has sent me lots of great Brooklyn based artists that her public relations company promotes. To my personal embarassment and regret, I have sat on some of her submissions for far too long, but Dragon Turtle is a truly captivating act to watch out for. The band describes themselves as “Ambient-Winter-Calypso-Space-Folk” and as contrived as a description as that may be, it’s quite accurate. The band’s sound is quite unique with vocals that are subdued and echoey, acoustics clamoring for your attention at every turn, and a good deal of electronic undertones to keep any listener paying close attention. For your listening pleasure, we have a track off of their new album, Almanac, streaming below. The album is being released by La Société Expéditionnaire in a variety of formats. However, if I had to choose one of the three it would definitely be the black and red vinyl, which is limited to 500 copies.

As stated before, Parenthetical Girls is a Washington-based experimental pop band. In all honesty, I really only stated listening to them because one of my favorite groups, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, covered their song “Love Connection” off of the Parenthetical Girls album (((GRRRLS))). Once I actually decided to give the original group a chance, however, my efforts were well rewarded. This album, while definitely not outlandish and borderline unlistenable, is not your typical pop album. Sure, the instrumentation is gorgeous and singer Zac Pennington (while sounding a little androgynous at times) sings beautiful stories in a haunting, quivering voice, this is more Xiu Xiu than Weezer. In fact, the best comparison to the sound of Parenthetical Girls is Xiu Xiu with a little more bells and a lot less freakouts. In fact, the song “I Broke Up (SJ)” off of Knife Play is a very good comparison, minus the parts of the song where Jamie Stewart freaks out and yells. Anyway, I’ve namedropped two really good experimental pop acts in this, and if the sheer weight carried by dropping those names doesn’t convince you to check these albums out, it’s out of my power.

These days, it’s not unusual for bands to feature a DJ. But a band featuring four DJs? Okay, now you’re got our attention. Say hello to Birdy Nam Nam, a group of four French DJs who use turntables to create music that’s pretty much impossible to classify. They’ve won the DMC World Championships, hip-hop’s highest honor, but this ain’t your mama’s hip-hop.

What Crazy-B, DJ Pone, DJ Need and Little Mike do is take the sound collage approach to hip-hop pioneered by guys like DJ Shadow and turn it up a notch, making tracks that are dense, funky and downright bizarre, filled with samples that American producers would probably never think to try. And the coolest thing about them is, they can recreate most of their stuff live, on four mixers and turntables, as this semi-legendary video from the DMC championships attests.

Does this fit under our ‘emerging technology’ tagline? It’s hard to say. It’s certainly emerging from somewhere. Ladies, if you find a g-string too restrictive, or you’re fond of wearing paper-thin dresses and waging an eternal war against the visible panty line, you now have the option of wearing the above device, which is called the CString. While there’s no ’string’ actually involved, onlookers can certainly ‘C’ just about everything, including an awkward rear aspect that looks something like a pencil clenched between the wearer’s buttocks. This is one of those occasions when we should *all* be glad that this isn’t a Gizmag road test. There are further photos in the gallery, but we’d struggle to call them safe for work. You’ve been warned.

One of these days, somebody will take the “less is more” trend in women’s underwear to its logical conclusion and start selling lacy postage stamps. Until then, there’s the CString.

Oh Baby – it’s cold outside!

Good thing you have Kieran Hebden and his Four Tet moniker to warm you by – then!

Four Tet have for years been producing the kind of spine tingling electronic soundscapes, which consistently have been pushing boundaries for what’s possible with machines, processors, circuits and a bit of power.

The forthcoming Four Tet album – “There Is Love In You” – is expected to land at your local music pusher on 25th. January 2010 (26th. if you live in the States), and holding 9 stellar tracks it marks the moment for the 7th. Four Tet album, and if you count Kieran’s work under his own name and mix albums, his 13th.

Needless to say – if you have 13 albums under belt you kind of know your way around a studio or two, and with his latest single – “Love Cry” – there is amble proof of such fact.

From its singular hum – “Love Cry” – soon develop into a 9′01″ mins. labyrinth of acoustic drum breaks and transcending space sounds coupled with a hypnotic vocal, which seems to be hovering around its own axis endlessly. In fact – there’s good reason to get more than dizzy listening to this if you’re looking at prolonging your weekend state.

Championed by the BBC Radio 1 massive this is definitely one of those leftfield wonderments!

Three tracks of complete and utter insanity from The Mars Volta. Cut That City has some heavily distorted vocals and keyboard driven rhythms that get your feet moving. Concertina is full of Spanish beauty with a satisfying build and climax while Eunich Provocateur is the ultimate space out, electronic rock song tthat one could ask for. Check this out if you want 20 minutes of complete bliss.
