Hundreds, if not thousands, of lobbyists are likely to be ejected from federal advisory panels as part of a little-noticed initiative by the Obama administration to curb K Street’s influence in Washington, according to White House officials and lobbying experts.

The new policy — issued with little fanfare this fall by the White House ethics counsel — may turn out to be the most far-reaching lobbying rule change so far from President Obama, who also has sought to restrict the ability of lobbyists to get jobs in his administration and to negotiate over stimulus contracts.

The initiative is aimed at a system of advisory committees so vast that federal officials don’t have exact numbers for its size; the most recent estimates tally nearly 1,000 panels with total membership exceeding 60,000 people.

Under the policy, which is being phased in over the coming months, none of the more than 13,000 lobbyists in Washington would be able to hold seats on the committees, which advise agencies on trade rules, troop levels, environmental regulations, consumer protections and thousands of other government policies.

“Some folks have developed a comfortable Beltway perch sitting on these boards while at the same time working as lobbyists to influence the government,” said White House ethics counsel Norm Eisen, who disclosed the policy in a September blog posting on the White House Web site. “That is just the kind of special interest access that the president objects to.”

Most committee members receive no pay for their participation. They often are urged to take part by companies, trade groups or advocacy organizations that hope to sway government decisions to their advant

Doing away with lobbyists would not be easy. They work for too many agencies. One suspects they may have had a hand in writing the rules.

Administration lawyers determined that they couldn’t ban lobbyists from advisory committees directly because most of the panels are overseen by individual agencies rather than the White House; so Eisen encouraged — rather than ordered — the prohibition. Nonetheless, administration officials said, most Cabinet secretaries have implemented the recommendation, usually by barring renewals or new appointments for lobbyists.

The voiced concern here is that we will lose expertise by not having lobbyists on these committees. The administration responds that industry is welcome to send people to be on the committees, just not lobbyists.

Administration officials remain sanguine, saying the criticism is overblown and arguing that top corporate officers are free to sit on advisory panels as long as they aren’t lobbyists. Eisen, in a response letter to the ITAC leaders last month, wrote that “arguments that only lobbyists can bring requisite experience to provide wise counsel . . . are unconvincing on their face.”

There may be some merit to the idea that we might lose some expertise with the loss of the lobbyists, but on balance, I think we will probably come out ahead. Based on my limited experience with state government, lobbyists may have special knowledge in their subject area, but mostly what they have is special knowledge about the legislators. They know who is who and what their stance is on the issues. They know the special interests of the legislators, what food they like and even, it seemed, the names of their kids. Schmoozing ability seemed paramount. If nothing else, maybe it can cut down on the revolving door effect seen so often as officials rotate in and out of industry and government.

I once had a professor who gave an example of ethics by using chairs. The first chair was a solid ethical person. The second chair was a slippery ethical person. The third chair was a person who had no ethics whatsoever. My professor asked the class what chair we would be sitting in at the end of the day. I stressed over this question because I believed I would sit in the solid ethical chair, but as he explained the different chairs I began to realize that I have made some decisions that could border being unethical.

Making decisions can be stressful because you must think of all the possible  outcomes. If we want people to trust us then we must make ethical decisions. I’m  reading a book called Public Relations Writing and Media Techniques by Dennis  Wilcox, and one of the chapters’ focuses on legal and ethical guidelines.

Guidelines for ethical conduct from Public Relations Society of America Code of Ethics:

Advocacy

• We serve the public interest by acting as responsible advocates fro those we represent.
• We provide a voice in the marketplace of ideas, facts, and viewpoints to aid informed public debate.

Honesty

• We adhere to the highest standards of accuracy and truth in advancing the interests of those we represent and in communication with the public.

• We acquire and responsibly use specialized knowledge and experience.
• We advance the profession through continued professional development, research, and education.

One question many public relations professionals have is “what is truth?” People have many different views on what is right and what is wrong. It is stressful trying to decide whether or not to go along with what your company is saying or stand up and say something.

I handle these situations in a way that will help reduce the stress and anxiety of making such tough decisions.

Here are a few of my own tips:

• Ask around – ask professionals you look up to if they think the decision you are making is ethical or not.
• Sleep on it – don’t make rash decisions.
• How will you feel about the outcome – if you are going to feel guilty about the decision you made then it is probably the wrong choice.

Before making any decisions ask yourself, “what chair will I be sitting in at the end of the day?” Hopefully these guidelines and tips will help you with any ethical decisions you must make.

Nearly everyone relies on purported authorities of some form or other, even when those authorities achieve that status by virtue of being self-professed iconoclasts. Unfortunately, such authorities can sometimes be wrong, often grossly wrong, even when they style themselves mavericks.

For every crank who became renowned as a scientific hero, there are ten thousand others who remain forever cranks.

This is especially true in most pseudosciences, in some legitimate areas of fringe-science, and even mainstream science as well. Being a rebel, being a scientific heretic, a gadfly, doesn’t mean that one is any more correct than more orthodox researchers, nor, to be fair, does being mainstream necessarily imply that one is always right. It is often said that in science, there is no such thing as an authority, there are only experts.

But even so, when is it appropriate, when is it rational, to rely upon the expertise of others, and when does it become nothing more than an act of blind faith, an argument from authority, or intellectual laziness? Bear with me for a bit, and I’ll try to suggest a possible answer given what I know at the moment.

And do not take me as an Authority™…

When I want to find out something about biology, as a layman, I don’t run a series of tests or experiments myself to find out the answer–I read a book written by a biologist–simply because I myself do not have the funding, the time, the training, nor the equipment to find out on my own, so I find myself relying upon the expertise of another person whom I have reason to believe happens to have the relevant training and knowledge.

It would be ludicrous of me to trust only that which I can discover firsthand, to see with my own eyes, for that requires that I be an empirical jack-of-all-trades and master of all, which I am not and cannot be. But does this mean that I regard that biologist as having the definitive last word, the final authority on the matter in question? Of course not, that’s a false dichotomy.

I then read other books, written by other biologists expounding from their field on the same subject…I look for a second opinion, and a third, etc, to better find out if the first biologist has his facts straight, even to checking journals and journal extracts online if the matter of discourse is particularly important. Even a biologist, or any scientist, any expert, who has shown himself trustworthy and competent in the past can occasionally be wrong, so it’s important to do a little fact-checking on one’s own whenever the means is available.

…and it’s important to confirm the credentials of the expert in question if this hasn’t already been done, easily enough with a phone call to the right place or a quick Web search…

But an honest researcher, an honest expert, and most of the better-known skeptics I’ve heard, will tell you up front that they don’t want you to just take their word for something as Revealed Truth, but to think for yourself, to confirm what they are telling you on your own, and in some of the skeptical podcasts I listen to, they ask you to let them know when they make mistakes. Why? So they can correct those mistakes, of course, to free their minds from the clutter of error and move on…

Scientists don’t know everything? Duh! Scientists know they don’t know everything, or science would stop!

The point of science is to combine imaginative novelty and rigorous skepticism to first conceive new ideas, and then to critically question, examine, and test them to winnow the wheat from the chaff, the sound ideas from intellectual garbage, to discard what doesn’t work and keep what does, in an elegantly Darwinian selection of ideas and methods.

When I’m on a skeptical Website, I notice a lot of comments involving criticism, often fair and constructive, though not always, of any factual errors in the main post, much of which is taken in stride by the blog author. Dissent is encouraged. Science and skeptical sites tend to have a healthy atmosphere of vigorous, often heated, debate.

In contrast, for all their talk of open-mindedness and academic freedom, most Websites and blogs owned by believers in certain non-scientific concepts tend to discourage the discussion of dissenting views, and several blogs I’ve been on, such as Evolution News and Views, do not even make allowances for commenting at all. On some of those pro-fringe sites where commenting is permitted, there is often a bit of censorship of criticism, even to the point of each comment being individually screened by the author, and deleted if presenting a contrary view. Intellectual cowards.

Obviously, many on the ‘other side’ take exception to having their authority questioned, and are not as open to discussion or debate as they would have us believe.

Regardless, whether one doubts or believes, my view is that it is rational, even desirable, to rely upon the expertise of another in a given field of knowledge so long as it is beyond a reasonable doubt that the expert’s claimed credentials are genuine, relevant, and it is beyond a reasonable doubt that the expert is trustworthy. This is simply because of the fact that we are all ignorant of most of what there is to know, and nobody’s expertise is truly global. Training in one field of study does not convey training in another. Sometimes we simply must depend on the assistance of others in matters we are not knowledgeable about.

It is the mark of a fool to be incapable of saying to himself ‘I don’t know.’

It is also my view that it is rational to rely upon expert opinion so long as one does not consider such opinion to be incontrovertibly true, but open to further questioning, revision, and even to being discarded with the acquisition of new and better findings at some future point.

Believers will often (and loudly, in person…) admonish skeptics to question their own beliefs as they do those of believers, but I have yet to see other than the most honest believers take this advice themselves. Some do though. Many become skeptics. I did.

It becomes intellectually lazy, authoritarian, and dogmatic when we carelessly accept pronouncements from ‘on high’ without question, even fearing to question because to do so would mean to reexamine what we wish to believe, call into doubt what is important to our sense of self, our ideologies, our religions, our worldviews, our hopes and fears, the core of our very being. As comfortable as it is to ‘just believe’ in the short term, to accept a proposition without sound reason can be dangerous, often to life, health, or financial well-being, as any victim of a scam or confidence game can attest.

Gullibility, whether the credulously accepting, the rebelliously anti-establishmentarian, or both in the same individual, (Yes, this is possible–even common–I’ve known such people…) can be bad for you, for as someone once said, ‘Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.’ Fnord.

On Sunday I hosted the first show of the new Celebrate Your Spirit: Celebrate You! Blogtalk Radio show series and I have to admit that even with my expertise on the topic of spirituality I was shaking in my chair. I can normally articulate my thoughts and experience on spirituality quite easily, but the energy radiating within me was so overwhelming I thought I would never be able to find the right words to express what I wanted to share with my listeners.

To make matters worst, I had a technical glitch which prevented me from hosting the show at the scheduled time and I was about to give up when I begun speaking with one of the listeners in the show’s chat room while I was trying to resolve the issue. During the conversation I was able to refocus and reconnect with the energy that had inspired me to create the show in the first place. I was able to go on to reschedule my show for a few minutes later I was able to detach myself from my fears and allow my spirit to speak. Before I knew it, I had made it through. You would think that one of my spirit teachers would have walked me through the experience but no. We are all spirits living the human experience and we all have life lessons which we must overcome without gifted wisdom to truly comprehend the importance of the lesson.

When your spirit inspires you to speak from your heart your ego always tries to stand in the way and make you believe that you will look like a fool, that you will be misunderstood, or worst; it will make you believe that no one will be interested in what you have to say. In my fear about what my listeners would think of me as a host I lost sight of my knowledge, my life experience as a master intuitive medium, and coach. I lost sight of my own gifts; I lost sight of who I am. The lesson I want to share with you is that regardless of who you are and the knowledge you presently hold there will be moments when you will face fears and self-doubt; allow yourself the opportunity to find your own voice in the things you do. Listen to your spirit, it will guide you towards the best creative expression, and the right type of communicate to get your message across. There is someone out there that is meant to hear your message and with whom you’re meant to share your wisdom.

Regardless of the life you’re seeking to achieve, only when you connect with who you are on the inside will you find the strength to shine on the outside.

Most of us rate our jobs and careers as a very important part of our lives. This is understandable given it is our source of income, contributes to our sense of self and self worth and provides a major platform for our ongoing learning and development.  While it is us, and us alone who is responsible for our work, this does not have to extend to our job search.  Chances are you, like most people embark on a new job search or career change as a solo project and it can be tough. Looking for a new job takes a lot of time and effort and also confidence. It can be a lonely time and one of much self doubt.   It requires dedication and tenacity to back yourself and to make the judgment call about the roles you are looking to apply for.

How do you know if you are being too cautious in the roles you apply for? Perhaps you are undervaluing yourself and your expertise. Are you applying for jobs at the right level or are you aiming too high or too low? Given there are no set rules, you have two choices; to go it alone or to enlist the help of a trusted party or parties to help you. Sometimes we need others to push us along and force us to be uncomfortable and aim a little higher. Which is why having a mentor and or past or current bosses we trust can be a great career asset. Having those you trust that you can call upon to run jobs by if you are not sure if your suited for can only benefit you, yet too many of us embark on a job or career change as a solo ordeal, which does not always have to be the case. Those who you have relationships with, are next to always willing to assist you in your ongoing development and career success. The key is to identity those around you who fit the bill, – those people whose judgment you trust, who know you well and who you are comfortable calling, emailing or meeting up with to get their advice.

Having this support when making a job or career change is invaluable and can certainly make the process a far more swift and pleasant one. These people know you, respect you and want to see you succeed. If you are professional and reasonable in your approach to them for their support they will rarely turn you away.  If you are in the process of making a job or career change, as the year winds down, now is a great time to make a list of those to contact to help you make a successful change in 2010.  In part 2 of this blog post we will look at “Identifying those who are best positioned to assist you in your job search”

This is the summary of an article on the top ten weblog design mistakes. I’ll interact with several of those points here, but you can click the link if you want it from the horse’s mouth. As they say. Sounds kind of offensive to me. Some of the points, while valid, were ones I chose to ignore because I’m not running a professional blog. I have strong preferences too, and where better to exercise them than on my own website? But I do care about you too. How can I serve you?

The first mistake was a lack of author biography on many blogs. Which I’m guilty of. I’ve been meaning to update that, so I’ll do that now. I’m supposed to write something that will get you to trust me – my expertise and my sincerity. My natural instinct is to let the writing speak for itself, but I guess it makes sense that you would want to know more about where I’m coming from.

I’m going to take a rain check on the author photo, however (I don’t understand that idiom either, could someone who runs a blog explaining such things enlighten me? I’m too lazy to Google it. My, my). I prefer to let your imaginations roam freely, but I will start you off by disclosing that I have brown hair. Do I have a peg leg? Is my hair naturally brown or just dyed currently? Am I Asian? Indian? Hmm…stick around.

Apparently my titles are inadequate. They’re too cute and humorous (aw, thanks for saying I’m funny! See, what you don’t understand is that I’m practically a prostitute for humor permeation. An out-of-business prostitute, ugh). Titles should be far more informational, for they’re the most valuable words I type. People on average only read the first three or four words of a title, according to the article. And they don’t want to be messed with. I think I may politely decline on this point too, however. I like my titles. I’ll count on the tags to pull you guys in.

I haven’t done too much with links yet (although you’ll notice an increase already in this article), but because I plan to this next warning is also useful. I need to be clear about where my links lead. I like this line: “Life is too short to click on an unknown.” How true. And yet not…one could argue that life is too short to only click on what you know. Those “life is too short” arguments are typically fallen. But point taken. I think I’ve been doing a decent job; you’ll find on my title page that I explain the difference between clicking on the Writing tab at the top and clicking on the categories list to the right. I also detail how to subscribe to the RSS feed, because up until recently I myself did not know about this feature and its capabilities. Even now that I know about it and use it to keep up with the news (in theory), I’m terrible about checking it. I’m sure you’re more diligent, so to be added to your subscription list would truly be an honor.

Good reminder to keep my most popular posts accessible, so new readers can get the best first, and also to link to other posts from entries that reference them, so readers can get the whole picture. Obvious stuff, but like I said, I’m a noob. I’m also completely guilty as charged of “mixing topics”. But I did tell you in my disclaimer that I wouldn’t keep these linear. I will completely knowingly wander around a bit, or a lot. I want to, so like always, the desire will trump the logic. I hope you’re okay with that. If you ask nicely, I could write a really focused post on a topic of your choice.

Here’s a helpful hint for Mac users: When clicking on links, hold down the command key to open that link in a new tab so you don’t lose the original article. There’s no telling how long a simple ‘Back’ function will take. If you have a PC, I’m sure there’s some equivalent. I’m not a hater, I used Windows for eighteen years of my life. Yes, I was using a computer from the day I was born, yes.

Mixed topics are, at present, a characteristic of this blog. You get a little of everything. I have been told it makes the entries seem more ‘real’. You may think differently. Never fear, I plan to diversify. At least I’m not putting posts in numerous categories. I would not have thought that anyone would be guilty of that, but there wouldn’t be a warning if there weren’t the mistake, right?

Funny story: I was at the contract-signing for my new job (English teacher, detailed here) and as we were going through the contract, the staff member mentioned that every clause in the document is there because some past employee has attempted said activity. That’s hilarious, considering how comprehensive the contract was. For example, I’m required to wear a dark suit to work. “It doesn’t have to be black – it could be navy, or dark ash…we just ask that you don’t show up looking like a pimp.” Haha. I would’ve liked to see that. Maybe not a funny story? Okay. Mediocre recollection of an amusing occurrence.

I’m supposed to write like my future boss will read this. Or my future wife (that wasn’t in the article but I think it goes right along with boss and might be even more worthy of consideration). I understand that. But I take it with a grain of salt. The chances that either of them will ever view this is quite low at present. The chances that they’ll be offended is significantly lower. I tend to think I’m a naturally inoffensive guy, except to easily-offended people. But on the other hand, I can never know what someone will take issue with. I do have strong opinions. You can call me out if you want. We can talk.

And finally, having a domain name owned by someone else. Yes, WordPress. I’m alright with that. Sure, it screams newbie. I’m not doing this for a living; I don’t consider it worth paying any money for just yet. At least WordPress is better than Geocities. What the heck is a Geocity.

Those are the top ten weblog mistakes I found, as told by Mr. Nielsen. I’m sure there are many more I’m committing as we speak (merely an expression used here for endearment). Ah well. Live and learn. Live and earn.

Before when I was in the bathroom I had a great idea for a new wing I could add to this building. I’m really excited about it, so maybe it’ll already be started by the time you read this. I’m thinking about calling it ‘Introductions’.
