Books. I love them. I grew up listening to my dad read the Lord of the Rings trilogy to my brother a

Books.

I love them. I grew up listening to my dad read the Lord of the Rings trilogy to my brother and myself. By the time I was 4, I had heard each book at least twice.

When I got older, my parents continued to instill a love of reading in me. I would read books (primarily Babysitters Club) to my dad as he sat and listened. It was a nightly tradition. I was restricted on my television intake and literally told to go pick up a book. And I would.

I loved it. I love it still. Books transport you to realms beyond imagination.
And I grew up thinking everyone felt the same way.

As I got older, I came to the sad realization that–wow–some people don’t have a new novel constantly by their bedside? Other people don’t spend hours in bookstores? What do they do with their time?

I remember going over my friend’s house for the first time when I was about 12, and how surprised I was that her little house managed to find a place for 6 televisions. One in each bedroom, the kitchen, basement, and living room. Surprisingly, there were none in the bathroom…

I was almost embarrassed for her.

I don’t mean to sound pompous. I’m not trying to be. Don’t get me wrong– I LOVE television. I follow so many quality shows: Glee, House, How I Met Your Mother, Friends, Castle, Office, Community, 30 Rock. Okay, some aren’t all that QUALITY, which just goes to show that I’m just as shallow as the next person when it comes to television. But to feel the need to own a television in every main room of my house?

Excessive?

Being in college, I’ve further learned that my friend’s house wasn’t as abnormal as I initially found it to be. Living in a triple last year, I realized how large a part the television can play in other people’s lives. The tv was constantly on.

“Oh, I’ve seen this episode of Rock of Love/Flavor of Love/Keeping up with the Kardashian/I Love Money/[insert crappy show here], but there’s nothing else on.”

PICK UP A BOOK!

Oh, wait, they would pick up a book. You see, one of my roommates would only read (for school, of course, and not her own leisure) if the television was on. Commercials were for reading. Good plan?

I will admit that it was difficult not to get sucked into the addictive nature of these truly tasteless shows, but I managed to resist.

So, my questions: Does Reading have an expiration date?

I find so few people who read for FUN nowadays, and if they do it’s shoddy, third-rate “literature” like Twilight. Even Harry Potter, which I do truly enjoy, isn’t much of a literary feat to read.

It truly kills me that books are becoming outdated. I don’t get it. I love television. I love movies. I love all those things, but I could never completely replace books.

I hope I’m not the only one who feels this way. I hope I’m not the only one who finds such an intense comfort within the pages of a novel. I hope I’m not the only one.

So, yes, another thing is learned about me: I love books.

Don’t be surprised if my bookworm tendencies are a reoccurring theme, or if I feel the need to share good reads/quotes. I hope someone at there will appreciate it

An employee must be reverified only if his/her employment authorization expires. In most cases, if an acceptable document is valid on the day it is presented, then it fulfills the I-9 requirement and there is no requirement for employers to update the I-9 even if that document subsequently expires. For example, if a U.S. Passport is valid on the day the I-9 is completed, but subsequently expires, there is no need to reverify. List B documents do not need to be reverified.

There are specific situations when an employer must reverify an employee’s work authorization. When an employer reverifies an employee it is the employee’s work authorization that is reverified and not the document presented. When an employee first completes the I-9 form, the employer should review it carefully and note if the employee’s work authorization will expire.

In Section 1, note if there is an expiration date listed in the “…alien authorized to work until _________” portion of the attestation. If so, then this individual will need to show you evidence of continued work authorization prior to the date they listed in Section 1.

In Section 2, note whether the employee has presented a document that indicates a date when work authorization will end. Documents that have work authorization expiration dates include Employment Authorization Documents and some I-94 cards.

If you note that an employee’s work authorization will expire, set a reminder for yourself to reverify the employee before their authorization expires. Typically, we advise employers to contact employees and alert them of the expiration of their work authorization 120 days in advance of that date. This should allow employees enough time to procure and present evidence of continued authorization.

If you have any questions about the Form I-9, please contact us.

So that’s where I ended the day. Hedging for a drop tomorrow – maybe fueled by Dell results today. Would really like to see a drop to 195 for expiration, but more likely I think the bounce today off 199.80 (38.2% retracement from high of 208.70) was a positive. Will be interesting to see if this holds tomorrow. Was tempted to buy Nov 200 puts but have learned my lesson on this kind of high-risk trade.

Today was good. I saw some of my best friends who I haven’t seen in four months. Even though it was brief, it was really awesome just to see them again. Lately things have been kind of suspended in mid air, like being in limbo or something. Some stuff’s been going on in the family and I guess it’s getting to me. I didn’t go to two classes this week… That’s so unlike me. I really have to get my shit together and focus on school and the new “Expiration” shoot. My brother said he’s even working on getting me an internship at Paper Street Films, which would be amazing but I have to get my head in the game. I just really want it to be the holidays… It really does have a way of suspending your problems and bringing everyone together. I really need that right now. -_-

As the title suggests, I’m remaking “Expiration.” This time it’s going to be around a 10 minute film as opposed to its current 2:34 runtime. You’re going to see more of who that dancer is, as well as the history behind the injury (which will be different as well). The dance will still be in the film (and it’s going to be the same music) but it’s going to be revamped and much more hardcore, as this time I have access to a real ballet studio and real ballerinas. (Last time we used an acting studio which didn’t have the correct sprung floor for dancing, so the choreography suffered.) I’ve already written the script (or a first draft, anyway) so all I really need to do now is get cracking on auditions for both the acting and the dancing. But first, a question that I can’t seem to answer about the remake:

In the original film, the ballerina is a different person from the main character, suggesting it is the figurine coming to life and doing the dance. For the remake I’m struggling with whether or not to keep it this way, or have the main actress herself (who would obviously also have to be a dancer) do the dance as a sort of fantasy of what she can no longer do. I’m not sure which sends a stronger message… What do you think?

I am a firm believer in regular password rotation/change and Linux has a built in mechanism that makes it easy. The following is a brief overview of password and account ageing for Linux based systems.

The program that enables listing and modification on the expiration parameters is ‘chage’. Each individual user can view their account settings as shown below.
testuser@testServer:~$ chage -l testuser

Last password change : Aug 07, 2009
Password expires : Nov 05, 2009
Password inactive : never
Account expires : Aug 05, 1992
Minimum number of days between password change : 90
Maximum number of days between password change : 90
Number of days of warning before password expires	: 7

As you can see above, the last password change date is listed, as well as the expiration date for the current password. When executed from a non-privileged account, the user can only view their own account.

testuser@testServer:~$ chage -l root
chage: Permission denied.

Also, the non-privileged account can not change their settings either.

testuser@testServer:~$ chage -M 99 testuser
chage: Permission denied.

From the root account, you have to ability to modify all the settings for individual users.

root@testServer:~# chage
Usage: chage [options] [LOGIN]

Options:
-d, --lastday LAST_DAY set last password change to LAST_DAY
-E, --expiredate EXPIRE_DATE set account expiration date to EXPIRE_DATE
-h, --help display this help message and exit
-I, --inactive INACTIVE set password inactive after expiration
                                to INACTIVE
-l, --list show account aging information
-m, --mindays MIN_DAYS set minimum number of days before password
                                change to MIN_DAYS
-M, --maxdays MAX_DAYS set maximim number of days before password
                                change to MAX_DAYS
-W, --warndays WARN_DAYS set expiration warning days to WARN_DAYS

Before modification, I am going to turn off all expiration settings on the ‘testuser’ account. This is disabling password expiration on that individual account.

root@testServer:~# chage -E -1 -I -1 -m 0 -M 99999 testuser

No lets configure password aging for the test user. The first example below runs change in interactive mode.

	Password Expiration Warning [7]:
	Password Inactive [-1]:
	Account Expiration Date (YYYY-MM-DD) [1969-12-31]: 2012-12-31

Verify that the settings took.

root@testServer:~# chage -l testuser
Last password change : Oct 16, 2009
Password expires : Jan 14, 2010
Password inactive : never
Account expires : Dec 31, 2012
Minimum number of days between password change : 0
Maximum number of days between password change : 90
Number of days of warning before password expires	: 7

The same can be accomplished using the command line, non-interactively.

root@testServer:~# chage -E 2012-12-31 -I -1 -m 0 -M 90 -W 7 testuser

With the above settings in place, the user should be warned 7 days before the password expires on their account. If the password is not changed before expiration day, on the next login the user will be forced to change their password.

There have been times in the past where I’d consider letting my contract expire or just simply leaving, but somehow something always manages to pull me back in. It’s not happening next time. When that contract comes, I’ll just put the pen down and gently push it back.

Thanks, but this is pretty much the end for me here.

You let me be myself, and though my methods may be questionable, you let me continue. I just wish everyone else had that chance. They’re good people, and pretty competent too. Now, if only you’d focus on what they can offer rather than what they can do wrong. Things will be fine without me, I’m sure of it.

I’ve got about three months left. I promise I won’t half-ass anything or hold back. I’ll just be… me, going about with my stuff as I always have.

October 9, 2009 is the expiration date for the last batch of Polaroid film. From now on we can no longer buy fresh Polaroid film! A sad day indeed. Which reminds me, I have to run out to Adorama and pickup some more boxes of Polaroid 600 before they sell out. That will have to keep me until The Impossible Project starts rolling out their promised version of instant film in Early 2010.

A channel 4 news video about this sad topic can be found here.

If you have a significant amount of resources invested in your domain name, don’t lose it! Here is what happens when you let your domain name expire:

When your domain name expires, you have a 12-day grace period in which to renew it. When the grace period is complete, it is sent back to the registrar.

Note that the place your registered your domain name is most likely a “domain reseller” — and not necessarily the registrar you registered it from or that “issued” it to you. Who are registrars? It is likely to be GoDaddy, Verisign or Wild West Domains.

The registrar then puts your domain on a 10-day auction in order to make the most money they possibly can from it before they put it back in their database.

Once your domain has gone to auction, you still have 42 days in which to reclaim it; however, you will have to pay the registrar $80 and the their standard annual fee — usually from $8-35 per year.

If you reclaim your domain, then you must set it up once again as you did when you originally registered it — through the reseller — by pointing it to your web server, etc.

If you do not reclaim your domain name during the 42-day waiting period, then if someone bid on it at auction, they will be the new registrant.

Here is the story of Mike Davidson and his quest to register an expiring domain name.

Japan has had a little bit of a problem lately with expiration dates. So, they have invented this new Fresh Label that detects the levels of ammonia emanating from food and turns a different color when the food is bad enough not to eat. Yes, the age of the expiration date is over. This will give you freshness by shade. I hope they implement it real soon because that way it’s universal and more accurate.

This is a short story that I wrote about a month ago. I wanted to continue it as a longer story and make it kind of a study of how people deal with death, maybe I still will at some point but for now I’ll just share this….

And this fits in with the new theme on NaBloPoMo.

Oh and please excuse any crappiness that you read, I never really edited this piece

Do you ever remember when you were younger, wondering what you would do if you were going to die? Talking to your friends about how you would change your life? What places you would want to visit, what people you want to connect with before you pass. It was an oddly light topic, with the crazy things you would want to accomplish and the life changing events that would take place. What would you do if you were told you had a year left to live?

Yesterday, January 12, 2009, I was given an expiration date. It was stamped onto my hand with the ink that’s used at carnivals that doesn’t come off no matter how hard or how long you scrub.
This morning, I woke as the day light broke the horizon. I let Chase, my 2 year old puppy, out in the backyard, press “on” on my Coffee Mate and go to shower. The soothing heat didn’t tantalize me in to staying under the spray for very long. I wiped the moisture off the mirror but a haze remained that silhouette my form as I stood naked, dripping wet.

I saw nothing physically – outwardly – wrong with me. My brown locks were thick and fell just past my large (voluptuous as some men call them) breasts. I wasn’t in the best shape, a few extra pounds sat around my waist, hung out around my thighs and scurried around on my backside. However, I was a fairly healthy looking 26 year old. Turning side-ways, I tried to examine myself 360 all around. Me legs were longer than most, they looked best in a skirt, or so I’d been told. They curved in just the right places and had muscles were muscles were needed.

Moving closer to the mirror, I studied my face. The defining lines were hard, sharp angles, with a little pudginess to my cheeks. My skin turned golden in the spring and summer, but now in the winter, there was nothing more than a faint glow to my face. My green eyes were deep set, there was a shadow under them; I didn’t sleep well last night. I had a few small laugh lines and the start of wrinkles, but nothing that made me look older than I was. There was nothing sickly about me, I didn’t appear ill and those that didn’t know, couldn’t tell.

Chase barked and I was startled out of my examination. Glancing out the small bathroom window, my beloved lab was jumping at the oak tree at the far end of the yard. At least he wasn’t digging again, he was ruining my garden almost daily with those little paws.

I brushed, flossed and scrubbed my face with the wash that took me twelve years to find and was now the perfect combination for my skin. I put on the skirt that compliment my legs the best, a simple shirt as to not distract from my long limbs, then quickly plaited my hair to keep it out of the way.

After letting Chase in I prepared my coffee with just the right amounts of sugar and cream and sat down at my kitchen table, the sun starting to shine through the windows.
I started when Chase barked at my side, begging me to throw his ball. I patted his head and sipped my coffee.
It was cold.
How long have I been sitting here? I wondered, pouring out the coffee. I glanced at the microwave clock.
9:37am.

How did it get so late? Giving Chase one last pat on the head, I gathered my purse and my portfolio and headed to the studio.
It was a normal day. I sold 4 paintings and finished 2 that I had been working on for the past week, they would probably sell tomorrow. I got caught up on some paper work for the month – boring accounting things that no artists enjoys doing – paid a few bills and was home by seven.

The rest of the week passed in much the same fashion. Normal. I met friends for lunch on Wednesday. We ate at a small French restaurant that had the best coffee and bread (naturally) around. Thursday was coffee with John, my long-term boyfriend. I sold a total of 20 paintings all week and had a few more commissioned pieces that I began work on.

I hadn’t told anyone about my death sentence yet. Sure, I have been dying for years but everyone has always expected me to make a full recovery. No one knew about my latest doctors appointment so they had no reason to wonder what had happened or if there was any news. I still have a year to live, a year is a long time…right?

Maybe I’ll tell John tomorrow, I decided while I climbed in to bed Friday night. But really what was the point? There was nothing he – nor anyone- could do for me. I was doomed and no matter how bad it hurt him, he couldn’t change that.

I debated with myself for hours that night, wondering if I should tell him. Yes he deserved to know, we’d been together for over four years, we were in love. Of course he deserved to know. He was my confidant and my only family left. My parents had died years ago, my sister left the family as soon as she turned 18 and if my illness couldn’t bring her back my death surely wouldn’t either.

I’d keep quiet for now. Maybe if no one knows it won’t happen. Maybe if I tell no one, I won’t die.

TSL and SOL expired ITM for a 3.08% and 3.48% gain, respectively – squeezed a few drops of blood from that turnip, right? Not real impressive gains, but enough to put me just about even (so far) for July.

BGZ, which was my high risk play, didn’t work out so well. The candlestick for Friday was a Doji, which indicates indecision and lack of direction – Duh! It’s entirely possible that we will have a pull-back this week. If that is the case, I will either wait for this to get back to my original strike price (40.00) or if it gets near, sell am AUG Call against it.

I am not a big lover of Cash Secured Puts, or Naked Puts as they are more commonly referred to. But, sometimes, when I really like a stock and have an opportunity to buy it at a discount, I will do the trade. Thursday I was looking out to August expiration on the CallWriter lists – searching first in the Select lists and actually checking out the Naked Puts. Why Naked Puts? Me? A Covered Call freak? Well, I was actually looking for justification for doing Naked Puts – another weapon to add the arsenal – since they are appropriate at certain times. Besides, my GE CSP was not a good decision and I needed to sharpen this skill.

As I was working down the CallWriter list (Global Select Naked Puts), some looked interesting and some not, until I got to #12 – VMware (VMW). I eventually sold AUG 28 Puts on this (see my In Play page) and I was so excited about the trade that I made a video about it. It’s not long so make sure you check it out.

Even though there was no real follow through from Wednesday’s rally (we are still in the 880 to 950 range for the S&P 500 index), one of my toxic assets, Las Vegas Sands (LVS) has gone through a couple of days of 6+% gains. I was tempted to write an AUG 9 Call on it, which would return 8.22% if ITM on 8/21, and I actually debated it in my head for a while. Eventually I decided against it. I figured if the stock is moving like this on no news of any significance, why not wait another week or less until is gets to (maybe) $10 (the original JUN strike) and just bail? I sure didn’t want to commit to this relationship for another month, so I did nothing. Another factor is their earnings announcement on July 22nd – there have been several recent revisions up and this is a fairly good sign.

Similar situation with Bb&T (BBT). I will probably sell that today baring any radical move down.

Speaking of follow through – I have been tempted to make another video on the S&P 500 chart, but I really don’t know what to say. Overall, I just can’t understand why the market has not pulled back and re-tested the March lows. If you really dig through all the fluff and look at the foundation, it’s really shaky – to me it’s like a tidal wave is somewhere out there but nobody seems to be paying any attention. How does a company like Goldman have a quarter like they had? Of, that’s right; most of the key jobs in the Government are former Goldman execs – duh!

Quickly, Coaster Day was a blast, but no videos – seems the park doesn’t allow it and honestly, some of the rides would be impossible since I was hanging on for dear life!

Had Pope Gregory XIII known that minimalism would be so fashionable in the future, the names of the twelve months of the year would all start by a different letter. This is not the case in any language I know of. In the English language for example, the months of March and May will always confuse us whenever we see “MA 1st” as the expiration date of our favourite snack. Most of us know what MA means, while others may not even care, but as striking as it sounds, the meaning of MA in the expiration date can be deduced even if we have never seen it before. Only one of the months March or May can be abbreviated MA, and without any additional information a person can figure out which one it is. Can you do it?

USCIS has requested an offical extension of the validity date of the form; while they wait for this extension to be granted, employers should continue to use the 02/02/09 version. When the validity is extended, and the form updated, we will be sure to let you know.

One of the things that is critical to consider in moving forward with a transitional services soluti

One of the things that is critical to consider in moving forward with a transitional services solution is the concept of data management. This is something that has taken an interesting spin in recent years. When does a document or when does IP itself expire? Does IP ever expire? How long can information live before its relavence is reduced to nothing.

IP represents property, something tangible. Kodak corporation this week discontinued the production of Kodachrome. Everything known about Kodachrome will move from practical information to historical information. Someday someone may invent a new solution that the “Kodachrome” data will impact but for now the IP has exceeded it’s ttl (time to live in the directory world).

Does Data expire? Does it move from relavent to historical (as above). What does it do when it stops applying to the problem it was solving before?

Without a data management solution within a transitional services offering the reality is that in no time the problems that plague on premise solutoins will plague the cloud solutoin.

There is a finite limit due to energy and heat produced in the amount of spinning disks the world can have.

So data management is critical.

We boil this into two simple concepts:

1. Cost of keeping the data in the cloud.
2. Cost of the problem (solved by the data) reoccuring.

When the cost of 1 exceeds the cost of 2 it is time to remove the data from the cloud solutoin.
