68.2 of the Swiss voters have rejected the popular initiative for a ban on exports of commodities, infrastructure and know how for military purposes. Only hours after being announced this result has been widely commented. Although it was clear from the beginning that the idea did not stand the slightest chance, especially not in the current crisis.

We can be glad for no less than seven reasons for this outcome.

First of all, it would not have made the world a better place. If Swiss companies do not sell their aircraft someone else will. For instance, Pilatus Aircraft will be able to deliver 25 PC-21 trainers to the United Arab Emirates.

This leads to the second argument. Highly qualified jobs will be preserved and precious know how remains in Switzerland. Even if left wing activists often say the opposite, the arms industry in general and aerospace in particular remains a high value adding and know how intensive sector. This is more than a welcome addition to a national economy confronted with a crisis.

Third, a “yes” to end exports would not have improved the image of Switzerland abroad. The contrary would have been true. Our banks have suffered enormously and have to reinvent themselves. Fortunately our aerospace and arms industry remains what it has to be: a trustworthy partner.

Fourth, far more than the directly concerned jobs would have been lost. The more a sector is specialized and high tech-oriented, the more it sustains suppliers, service providers and other activities.

A fifth risk would have been the erosion of technological know how crucial for other sectors as well. Examples are civil aerospace, civil engineering or systems and components. The Swiss industry as a whole would have suffered.

A sixth argument is the capacity of the companies to recycle themselves. Adaptations of specialized workers, what the employees of the aerospace and military industry are, are extremely difficult. All successful examples show that the time lag is extremely long.

The final and seventh argument is the capacity to innovate of the Swiss arms industry. Its products and services have always been trendsetters. If they were forced to close down, it is doubtful whether hypothetical successors will achieve the same level of reputation for long.

I discussed templates and why to use them in another post. Basically, we use them to eliminate the pesky, repetitive code zombies. I also showed some built-in templates and what they do.

But what if you want to add your own template or modify an existing one? Managing your own templates is important because your business domain and how you work determines to a large extent what is the common code you use all the time.

Don’t be tempted to say “It takes too long to create the template. In that time I could’ve typed the code myself.” Are you going to say that the next 50 times you have to type the same code? I always force myself to sacrifice the 2 minutes because I’ll save me 20 minutes in the long run.

How to add/edit a template

In the spirit of show, rather than tell, here’s a video that shows how to create a template to make it easier to add an additional case-statement to a switch-block. We want to add case blocks for IDLE and OFF for the enum EngineState.

A couple of notes on some of the fields we saw in the video:

• Name: The shorter the better, because you want to type as little as possible to invoke it. But make it unique enough so you don’t get too many matches.
• Context: Eclipse will only show the template in the list of available templates if it belongs to the right context. Eg. when editing JavaDoc’s, none of the Java statements templates will appear, only the Javadoc ones.
• Description: Make it nice and… descriptive, stating what the template does. The short name may not always be enough to know this.
• Pattern: You can mix normal Java code with template variables. I describe variables below.

Variables

You can use variables to make the template a bit smarter. Eclipse has a raft of built-in variables and although all variables are useful, some are more useful than others.

The example below (from the video) shows 2 variables: ${cursor} which tells Eclipse where to leave the cursor after cycling through all placeholders and ${value} which is a custom variable, ie. not built-in.

Keep the following in mind when using templates:

• You can use the Tab key to move from one variable to another. No mouse or arrow keys required.
• Custom variables don’t mean anything to Eclipse but they can be used later in the same template to refer to the same user-provided name. See the new template for an example of this.
• You can also use an unnamed variable (${}) to signify a placeholder where the user should enter something but the variable isn’t used anywhere else.
• Other variables can tell Eclipse to guess which field to use or to get documentation info (eg. current author).
• Variables must be enclosed in ${} – don’t forget this.

Useful Variables

Here’s a rundown of the most useful variables. You can get a full list by pressing Ctrl+Space while editing a template.:

• cursor – Tells Eclipse where the cursor will finally end up after you’ve edited all the other variables. Leave the cursor somewhere sensible like on a blank line so you can start typing immediately.
• var – A list of variables in scope, the first guess being the last variable declared in the smallest scope. You can pass a type of limit the list to only variables of that type.
• iterable, array, collection - A list of either iterables, arrays or collections in scope, starting with the last declared variable in the smallest scope. Nice for loops over an array/collection. iterable is sufficient for most situations as it covers both arrays and collections.
• line_selection – Perfect for templates that wrap a block of selected code in a loop or some other construct. The for and while templates use these to allow you select code that will be placed in the loop. To use, select the code, then press Ctrl+Space twice to get Template Proposals (you may need more presses depending on how you’ve set up your proposal options.
• import – A specific import you need generated together with the template. For example, a template that generates a log4j statement can also import log4j’s Logger. The import’s ignored if it already exists.
• newName – A unique name for a variable based on the type you pass it. Eg. if you pass the type MultipleDocHandler, a variable with the name multipleDocHandler will be generated.

How to import/export a template

To make it easy to share templates, Eclipse allows you export a template so that someone else can import them. An XML file is produced which contains the template(s) you selected. I’ll be sharing some handy home-grown templates as XML files.

Here’s how to import/export a template

1. Go to Window > Preferences > Java > Editor > Templates
2. Select the templates you want. NB! The checkboxes don’t indicate what’s selected; they are used to enable/disable a template. A template is selected if the whole row in the table is selected, so use Ctrl+Left Click or method specific to your OS to multi-select templates.
3. Click Import… and choose the XML file you received. Or Export… and provide a filename.

Tanto il Governo che la maggioranza dei parlamentari si sono detti contrari all’iniziativa e ritengono invece che un simile divieto non possa che esacerbare le relazioni con la comunita’ islamica presente nel Paese (tra le 350 e le 400mila persone).

Il Gruppo per una Svizzera senza esercito (GSsE) ha denunciato il fatto che fra i principali destinatari vi fossero paesi in situazioni di crisi o di conflitto, quali l’Iraq, il Pakistan e l’India.

Quindi sancisce il divieto di esportazione e di transito attraverso la Svizzera di materiale bellico, comprese le tecnologie che possono servire alla produzione di armamenti.

The Department of Overseas Labor unveiled a website on labor export, www.dolab.gov.vn, November 27 in Hanoi.

Department head Nguyen Ngoc Quynh said that the website aims to computerize State management as well as provide information on labor export.

People can log on to the site for information about markets, recruitment, policies, and procedures to work abroad.

Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, Ms.Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan praised the launch of the website and expressed hope it would improve efficiency of labor export matters.

Vietnam has fallen short of its target to send 90,000 laborers to work abroad this year as a consequence of the global economic crisis.

Nguyen Ngoc Quynh, Director of Overseas Labor Management Department announced the information on Nov. 27, noting that the total number of Vietnamese laborers leaving to work abroad in 2009 is expected fall 22 percent short of the country’s plan to around 70,000.

However, Vietnam is pinning high hopes on signs of recovery in the world labor market from now to the end of the year, Mr. Quynh said, adding that the country is making efforts to make full use of the traditional markets of Malaysia, Libya, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan and the Middle East.

According to Mr. Quynh, the project to provide assistance in poor districts to help locals export their labor has been stepped up, with over 600 workers being sent abroad and nearly 3,000 others receiving vocational training to prepare to work in foreign countries.

The Department is deploying a pilot project on vocational training in some fields of high demand in the world including welding, tourism and hospitality, and construction.

The Department on Nov. 27 launched its website in a bid to increase the transparency of information on labor exportation, making it easier for laborers to work abroad and preventing them from being exploited.

Vietnam had by the end of October exported over 58,200 workers abroad with Taiwan (China) being the country’s largest labor importer, followed by the Republic of Korea , Japan , the United Arab Emirates , Macao  (China) and Malaysia.

Apologies if this is a repeat grumble, but every time I export an EAR file from RSA the dialog box annoys me. Well, that’s a bit unfair, it’s not the whole dialog box, just one very pointless checkbox on it…

So the first time I attempt to export to a destination which already exists, I get a helpful error preventing me doing something potentially stupid. When I know that I’m just re-exporting the same EAR and I’m happy to just overwrite the old one (which probably wasn’t working because I forgot to include something important) I just need to check the “Overwrite existing file” box to make the error go away and I can hit finish. Lovely… except that the dialog remembers this option next time I come to do an export! Basically it may as well not exist after the first export.

It’s actually a bit of a love hate relationship with this little checkbox though, because if it always defaulted to unchecked I think I’d much prefer it to having a dialog popping up asking whether I want to overwrite an existing file. Oh well, almost useful.

Anyway, it’s Friday and time to go home; check.

“The US dollar has hit a 14-year low against the Japanese yen with low interest rates in the US making the greenback less attractive to investors.”

According to BBC News, the US dollar has slipped to 86.5 yen. It seemed to have lost its name as ‘world currency.’ With low interest rates and unstable economy within the US, the investors are ditching the US dollars and finidng an alternative (such as Euro, Yen, or gold). This has significantly affected the US dollar to fall. Investors wanted safe, high-profit currency; not low-profit, unstable US Dollar.

While the US Dollar slipped to 86.5 yen, other currencies such as Euro, Yen, or gold have increased dramatically. The price of gold was especially surprising. The price of gold was steadly rising for last 5 years! This significantly increased especially during the last 2 years when there was a global economic recession. Investors wanted more safe investments. So they chose gold.

Yet, I do not think the fall in US dollar is a bad news for US automobile companies or export companies. As the value of US dollar compared to other major currencies has fallen, the exporting companies have gained price advantage over other companies in the country with high currency. Also this will allow companies in the US to gain more control of the domestic market as other companies based on the country with high currency compared to the US dollar will lose a price advantage.

Japanese exporting companies would be seriously concerned about this situation. As 40% of its economy is based on exporting, it is a serious matter related to the recovery of economic downfall in Japan.

I don’t really see an export function for Evolution. I do see an import function.

Microsoft is so rotten, I tried to export from Outlook, and it says I need some install disk with an add on,… so I went to my gmail, did an outlook compatible export, and the import was useless. BUT when I did a gmail VCARD export, that reads in just fine to Evolution.

Now, IF I found a machine with the proper Outlook Microsoft add-in, then I could synchronize my Blackberry to Outlook, and export to Ubuntu’s Evolution e-mail client.

Närmare 7000 jobb är hotade i Västsverige om Saab skulle läggas ner i Trollhättan. Det är ett hårt slag mot en region som har rest sig och börjat blicka framåt. Saab är en av handelskammarens största medlemmar så givetvis stöttar vi detta anrika företag. Jag betona att vi inte anser att politiker genom staten skall vara ägare av en bilfabrik. Vad Saab och övrig fordonsindustri i hela landet just nu behöver är ett mentalt stöd från regeringen. Att regeringen uttalar tydligt att detta är en bransch som är viktig för Sverige idag och kommer att vara det framöver också. Vi talar om en högteknologisk bransch som står för mycket stor del av Sveriges export. Sveriges industri generellt och fordonsindustrin speciellt behöver regeringens uttalade stöd.

När en brottare hamnar i brygga är det ett tufft läge att ta sig ur, om man har det läget en längre tid blir oddsen lägre för at man ska klara sig från domarens slag med handen i mattan som markerar fall och förlust. Dock kan det oväntade hända i idrottens värld och det kan det förhoppningsvis i näringslivets värld också. För att citera Maud Olofsson idag, “hoppet är det sista som överger oss”. 

Jag förundras över personalens uthållighet. Ledningsgruppen är i princip intakt sedan i vintras och på verkstadsgolvet tackar man ja till återanställningar. Jag hoppas att denna optimism får ett positivt resultat, på något sätt.

Träffade Indiens ambassadör idag som vill öka samarbetet mellan Sverige och Indien, mellan ambassaden och handelskammaren, därmed våra medlemsföretag. Idag går endast 1,3% av vår export till Indien. Motsättningarnas land, där man t ex har 5000 tidningar, samtidigt som man har stor andel analfabeter. Totalt har Indien 1,1 miljarder invånare. Det låter som en hyfsat stor marknad……skulle inte några promille av dem kunna tänka sig att köpa en Saab?!

‘Futures trading in rice, sugar and pulses should be banned’:

A parliamentary panel today suggested that futures trading should be banned in case of wheat, rice, sugar and some pulses till the country becomes self sufficient in these food items.

The Estimates Committee asked the government to bring a new legislation to control the retail prices of essential commodities like rice,wheat, pulses, edible oils, sugar, milk and vegetables.

On futures trading, the report said: “Since food security of the country is at the stake, the Committee recommends that futures trading in wheat, rice, tur dal, urad dal and sugar should be banned till the country achieves self-sufficiency in the production of these items on a continuous basis”.

In Other major Commodities Updates we can see exports of Spice declining and on the other hand price of pulses rising up 80% in a year time.

Spice exports decline 1.3% in April-October:

Exports of spices fell 1.3 per cent in volume and 1.6 per cent in value during the April-October period of the current financial year.

According to the latest estimates of Spices Board, total exports in the period were 280,885 tonnes valued at Rs 3,031.59 crore against 284,560 tonnes valued at 3,080.25 crore in the same period last year.

Pepper exports suffered a serious setback as the figures dropped to 11,500 tonnes valued at Rs 179.16 crore as against 14,750 tonnes valued at Rs 246. 70 crore in the same period last year.

Export of chilli also declined to 100,500 tonnes valued at Rs 706.50 crore as against 121,500 tonnes valued at Rs 660.17 crore.

Coriander exports had a better performance at 25,250 tonnes valued at Rs 128.12 crore against 17,100 tonnes valued at Rs 116.80 crore.

Pulse prices rise up to 80 per cent in one year:

The government today said prices of pulses have surged by up to 80 per cent in the national capital over the last one year.

While prices of tur have gone up by 80 per cent in the last one year to Rs 90 a kg, that of moong dal surged 74 per cent to Rs 82, according to the data presented by Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

Even import of about 16 lakh tonnes of pulses between April and October has not eased pressure on the prices, the data showed.

Not just pulses, prices of sugar have almost doubled to Rs 38 a kg.

Domestic demand, except for the largest business interests is nonexistent and will remain so as long as the lack of available credit maintains its stranglehold over medium to small businesses. It is the export of goods and SERVICES to the world, developed or otherwise, that the United States deems to be prima facie of most importance. For it is the measurement of future demand that will lay the ground work for additional stimulus measures applied to targeted sectors of the US economy that will lay the ground work for a sustainable recovery with job creation by small to medium sized companies deemed suitable to be large companies when the Venture Capital market sees suitable risk reward profiles emerge.  Be of no doubt there will be additional stimulus measures and your sleepless nights shall stay your cheery friend for at least the next 36 months.

There are two ways to import tables. The simpler way is go to Tools > Durkin Toolkit and click on the Setup Wizard button in the bottom left hand corner. Click the Next button and on the following page click the I have my own template button and select the zip file. Click the Next button and then click the Install Now button.  This will select all the table structure and all of the settings. 

The way with more options is go to Tools > Durkin Toolkit and click on the Import Settings button and select the zip file containing the settings. In the custom tables list box check the tables you wan to import like below and check which table

Which settings to import can be selected also.

Mit der Globalisierung der Wirtschaft haben sich auch die Verwaltungsstrukturen der Unternehmen über die Welt verbreitet. Management ist zu einem weltumspannenden Schlagwort geworden und bestimmt die Handlungsweise von Amerika bis Asien.

Organisieren, koordinieren, kommandieren, kontrollieren – die hölzerne, inzwischen weit verbreitete Sprache der Wirtschaftstechnokraten kündet von unfehlbarer Verwaltungseffizienz. Allerorten macht sich der neue Glaubenssatz von Industrialisierung und Verwestlichung breit. Von Stanford bis Tokio, von Madrid bis Dakar, von Athen bis zu den Pariser Vorstädten – überall befindet man sich im “Reich, in dem die Sonne nie untergeht”, im allmächtigen Managementimperium.

„Management“ heißt der kommunikationswirksame Verkaufsschlager der westlichen Industrieländer. Hinter dem Zeitgeist-Konzept verbirgt sich ein uralter, der westlichen Tradition entsprungener Begriff, der sich ursprünglich auf Haus, Familie, Gerätschaften und Haushaltsführung bezog.
Von Ökonomen aufbereitet und mit einer wissenschaftlich-technischen Aura versehen, wurde „Management“ zur Wirtschaftsdoktrin, zu einem Propagandainstrument der neuen Globalisierung eines Marktes ohne Grenzen.

Genau wie die großen religiösen und politischen Imperien ist auch das weltweite Management ein Teil der Geschichte. Wer den Versuch wagt, die Entwicklung der Gesellschaft über einen sehr langen Zeitraum nach dem Muster der Erdgeschichte zu analysieren, wird auf die „geologischen“ Schichten einer Zeitarchitektur stoßen, die den Ist-Zustand der Zivilisationen in sich tragen. Traditionen überlagern sich wie Sedimente, auf deren Oberfläche jeweils eine neue Epoche entsteht, die dessen harrt, was unausweichlich auf den Menschen zukommt.

Jede Form von Modernität ruht daher gewissermaßen auf einer verschütteten Vergangenheit, die sich der Mensch in Mythen oder wissenschaftlichen Deutungen zu erklären versucht. Doch um sich mit der Endlichkeit abzufinden, sie gewissermaßen zu bezähmen, bedarf eine menschliche Gesellschaft der Fähigkeit, die Schattenlinie zu erkennen, die jene Momente markiert, an denen Unumkehrbares geschieht. So gesehen, ist die lange Geschichte einer Zivilisation ein einziges, aus Schriftsedimenten bestehendes Textkompositum, durchzogen von eben dieser Schattenlinie, die eine nie endende Inszenierung der Zeit gestattet, eine Untiefe der Erinnerung, die ihr Spiel mit der Wirklichkeit treibt und dem Unsagbaren huldigt.

Der Film versteht sich als eine Reflexion über den globalisierenden Westen. Er will an der Oberfläche der Sedimentschicht unserer Epoche den Moment entschlüsseln, der eine neue Qualität gegenüber den Brüchen und Übergängen der Vergangenheit darstellt: Wir leben heute in einer Ideenwüste leben, die aus dem Irrglauben geboren wurde, dass die Menschheit – unter der Wirkung der wissenschaftlich-technischen Wirtschaftsallmacht – zu einer dem Glück geweihten und von allen Zwängen befreiten „Post-Menschheit“ mutiert.

Laut diesem neuen Glauben befinden sich die desaktivierten, zu bloßer Folklore verkommenden Zivilisationen auf dem Wege der Selbstvernichtung. Damit erübrigen sich die Analyse des Textkompositums der Gesellschaft und die Suche nach der Schattenlinie, auch ist es nicht mehr nötig, eine Gesellschaft mit ihren unfassbaren Geheimnissen, ihrer Verletzlichkeit begreifen und ihr schöpferisches Potenzial und ihren Umgang mit den ihr eigenen Todestrieben erkennen zu wollen.

Die Arbeitsthese dieses filmischen Essays ist ein Satz, den Jean Paulhan in einer Abhandlung über die kubistische Malerei verwendete: „Entfernt die Bäume, die mir den Blick auf den Wald verstellen.“ Diese Metapher aus dem Pflanzenreich habe ich mir zum Grundsatz gemacht, denn unserer Zeit fehlt es an Erklärungen; ein Defizit, das durch die Fragmentierung und Abschottung des Wissens weiter akzentuiert wird. Doch genau diese Erstarrung hindert uns daran, eine Welt zu begreifen, die aus den Fugen gerät, aber nach wie vor in tief wurzelnden, noch immer wirksamen Traditionen verankert ist. Manche dieser Traditionen sind im Untergang begriffen, andere aber trotzen der Gleichschaltung durch die westlichen Systeme.
In dieser Partie mit unsicherem Ausgang ist das weltweite Management – vom Westen als reines Instrument der Vereinheitlichung mittels wissenschaftlich begründeten Verwaltens konzipiert – ein neuer Einsatz/Trumpf.

Wie bereits frühere Filme des Autors stellt auch „Dominium Mundi – Die Weltherrschaft des Managements“ von Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftswissenschaftlern, Biologen und anderen zementierte Gewissheiten infrage. Die Methode des Films besteht nicht darin, sein Sujet – die Funktionsweise einer Zivilisation – zu zerpflücken und zu zerstückeln. Vielmehr seziert er es in der Manier des Kubismus: aus allen Perspektiven, von innen und von außen.

Grundansatz und Anliegen des Films ist es, die Fähigkeit zum Widerstand und die Fortdauer des „Materials Mensch“ sowie die immer währenden Widersprüche, die gewaltigen industriellen Umbrüche und die poetischen Rückzugsmöglichkeiten aufzuzeigen, die ein Film greifbar machen kann, wenn er mit der Gründlichkeit einer literarischen Erzählung vorgeht. Formal handelt es sich bei dem Film also nicht um ein Lehrstück, sondern um die Enthüllung miteinander verquickter Fragestellungen, die aus einem ganz einfachen Grunde undurchsichtig und schwer zu umreißen sind: Denn was der Westen vom Westen nicht wahrnimmt, kann auch in unsere Analysen nicht einfließen.
