Marketing my company can take many avenues.

There is the traditional cold calling which is not something I like to do. Besides having a low success rate, it takes away from other business related activities.

There are direct marketing campaigns using either email or the postal system. Again these have a very low success rate.

There are trade shows which can be related to networking events. While there are many tradeshows for different materials, organizations and manufactures, etc. it is not possible to attend every show. Again this takes time away from other areas of the business.

Networking events like tradeshows are a possibility.

I understand my business style and how I can get the best results for myself, so I will concentrate most of my efforts on tradeshows and networking.

Before going to a tradeshow or networking event, it is necessary to do some research. It will not be possible to talk with everyone at the show or event. There are too many people and you cannot possibly remember everyone’s business and needs.

Some research on the attendees and a game plan on how you will work the floor or event is necessary. How many people would you like to talk with during the event? What do you say? Can you describe your business in 10 to 15 words? Remember to listen more than you speak. Follow-up with those people you meet.

I am now planning my tradeshow events for January of 2010. I am getting myself ready to meet potential clients. I know my business model; I need to develop the short message that I can use as an introduction to my business.

Next, more marketing ideas.

It’s time for a bit of crystal ball gazing, as we start a new year, although admittedly the end of t

It’s time for a bit of crystal ball gazing, as we start a new year, although admittedly the end of the calendar year isn’t anything significant in farming terms. After all the pastoral season finishes at the end of September and the dairy changeover happens end June. Calving and lambing are long since over, hay and silage are in the barns and farmers have to continue with routine maintenance, while making sure they make the right decisions on stocking rates heading into the summer.

This season at least there is plenty of grass around in some of the traditional drought regions, but others like Northland, Auckland and the Waikato have been a bit short of rain and grass growth, although it doesn’t yet look like a major problem. Dairy farmers may have to consider moving to once a day milking, unless decent rain arrives soon. The main issue for sheep and beef farmers is the cost of store stock which is showing signs of a grass market and bears little relationship to the current or anticipated returns from slaughter prices.

Dairy payout forecasts have improved remarkably well with milk powder prices remaining strong in spite of the dollar, but sheep and beef are uncertain. The UK and European lamb returns have held up better and longer than expected, but there are concerns about the sustainability of these prices through the rest of the summer and autumn. Much will depend on the demand from Europe for UK lambs which has reduced availability in Britain.

Beef prices are sensitive to the demand from the US hamburger trade where McDonalds and other burger chains have noticed a drop in consumer offtake. If the volume of bulls to slaughter, currently down by 50% in New Zealand, increases substantially in the New Year, this could cause a weakening of imported beef prices.

There will be the usual questions about the prices farmers will receive from meat processors, which will depend on a combination of factors, notably climate impact, feed availability, exchange rate, and market demand. But further out there will be a continuing debate about the future structure of the meat industry, sheep and prime beef numbers and the rate of conversion to dairying. Even further out than this will be the impact of future government intentions with regard to emissions trading mechanisms, carbon taxes, or other proposals for bringing agriculture within the scope of whatever New Zealand agrees to combat the effects of climate change.

The past year has seen the meat industry move further away from the sort of consolidation farmers say they want, especially the vocal members of the Meat Industry Action Group. After a brief flirtation with the idea of a mega company floated in 2008, the industry’s major players have all gone their own way, seemingly becoming more entrenched in their individual business directions.

AFFCO, Alliance and ANZCO all appear quite happy with the way things have gone, although it will be interesting to see how content they are at the end of their half year in March and, perhaps even more, at the full year point in September after a full season of livestock procurement competition.

Silver Fern Farms, after a much improved year, is pursuing its ‘plate to pasture’ strategy with individually packaged lamb cuts targeted at building its retail brand. The company says its Rightsize project (matching livestock volumes to plant capacity) and Backbone livestock contracts have both proved successful, while its capital restructuring programme has encouraged most suppliers to convert their co-operative shares to ordinary tradeable shares, with some suppliers electing to take up more shares, admittedly only $22 million of new capital. The PGG Wrightson default enabled Silver Fern Farms to pay down debt and has left the company in a position to manage its own affairs without too much external involvement. However it is still essential for Silver Fern to become more profitable, so that it can repay further debt and reward its livestock suppliers in the same way its main competitor Alliance has done every year recently.

The long term prospects for sheep and beef farming are sufficiently uncertain for all those involved in the industry to have major concerns about the future viability of their business model. Further rationalisation of the processing industry will become inevitable, unless profitability returns to sheep and beef farming and stock numbers increase substantially. It still looks unlikely that both Alliance and Silver Fern Farms will be able to survive indefinitely as two separate companies, although attempts to merge them have been singularly unsuccessful to date. In spite of, or possibly because of, the difference in relative business size, Alliance is still much the stronger company and it’s hard to see any other long term solution than an eventual merger of the two with Alliance’s business model emerging as the dominant one.

The cries for industry restructuring consistently bemoan the fact that New Zealand marketing doesn’t optimise the return to the farmers for their on farm production, because the overseas retailer is seen to retain a disproportionate share of the final value of the animal. This, it is claimed, could be solved by combining all sales and marketing under one company, while presumably using a series of toll processors. The meat industry would be so much less cut-throat if it were more like the dairy industry. However it really isn’t as simple as this!

For one thing, Fonterra is facing an increasing number of competitors for raw milk supply, including AFFCO/Talleys owned Open Country Dairy, which means the dairy industry is becoming more like the meat industry. The next reason the dairy model won’t work for meat is product flow: milk has to be collected every day and supply changes can only happen once a year as a rule, whereas livestock suppliers can, and often do, play one processor off against another; weather conditions have a much greater impact on livestock condition and weight gain, than on milk supply; and the enormous range of products from one animal, different meat cuts, hides and pelts, casings, offals, pharmaceutical by products all require specialist marketing which no single company could ever hope to provide.

When the Meat Board controlled marketing by acquisition, it nearly went broke through build up of quantities of frozen inventory which couldn’t be sold. Now, innovation has developed an ever growing market for chilled lamb which usually, if not always, commands a substantial premium over its frozen equivalent. This has only happened through healthy competition between export processors.

The main thing farmers need to get their heads round is the need for commitment to one or, at most, two processors, while being prepared to plan a supply programme for the whole season. This would take into account the effect on livestock weight gain of weather conditions, but it would take the guesswork out of which company was going to get the stock to process when it was ready. Equally processors would have to commit to taking livestock they had contracted to take within a realistic timeframe.

The important factor is to build trust between supplier and processor which would be reinforced by regular meetings to discuss the business and an annual meeting to sign a memorandum of intent for the next season. If this meeting doesn’t result in a renewed agreement to supply and process, the supplier would be free to negotiate with a different processor for the next year.

After nearly 20 years looking at what works and what doesn’t work in the meat industry, I can’t claim to have found a radical or even failsafe solution to the industry’s problems. But I’m convinced the situation would be a lot better if all participants followed the two principles of mutual trust and commitment.

I have built the website; I have set my fees structure, and made some contacts in China; now I need to develop the marketing for the business.

Some of the marketing comes from the website content. As I do not have any products, and never will take possession of products, the site is just text. I need to make sure that I write clearly and use words that will be searched for by potential clients.

Another form of marketing is through social media and blogs. I still need to investigate the benefits of social media (twitter, Facebook etc.). I do use my blog to post my thoughts. I will eventually use it for more than the “Education of a Buying Agent” posts.

The next thing to consider is the use of my existing networks.. I belong to a couple of networking groups based on my other business and there is some crossover between the two businesses and the people in my groups.

My mentor has told me that I need to get to trade shows. I will look at the shows that are coming up in my area and get to as many as I can. Meeting the people who are importing and exporting now is still part of the business model.

I will also develop marketing letters that can be used to reach businesses that I find using searches on some of the import/export sites that I visit regularly.

I will contact the various government departments that are responsible for trade and development and let them know that my company is operational and ready to help.

The more avenues that I use to get my message out there, the better the potential response will be.

When Apple announced the iPhone the importance of the Address Book application increased significant

When Apple announced the iPhone the importance of the Address Book application increased significantly. Address Book was now not only the tool to keep the various contact details about your friends, family, and work colleagues but was now the way you managed your phonebook on your iPhone.

Over the past few years Facebook.com has emerged as a great way to keep in touch with your friends and family. One of the optional fields in Facebook that your friends can make available to you is their phone number. Now, you can import your Facebook Friends phone numbers to Address Book and then sync them to your iPhone.

Firefox & Greasemonkey

The first thing you need to be able to import your Facebook phone numbers to Address Book is the Firefox Web browser and a plugin called Greasemonkey.

Head over to the Firefox website and download the web browser if you don’t already have it installed on your computer.

After you’ve installed Firefox you need to install the Greasemonkey plugin. This plugin will allow you to utilize a free application to gather all the Facebook phone numbers from our account.

Navigate to the Greasemonkey plugin page and click the add to firefox button.

After Greasemonkey is installed the application will ask to restart Firefox. Restart the browser and navigate to the Greasemonkey script page that you will utilize to get your Facebook friends phone numbers and import them into Address Book. Click install to add the script to your Greasemonkey collection.

Getting Your Facebook Friends Phone Numbers

Now that you’ve added Firefox, Greasemonkey, and the Greasemonkey script to get Facebook phone numbers, head over to http://www.facebook.com/friends/. Login to Facebook if you’re not already logged in and click on the Phonebook button.

Once the page has loaded, in Firefox click Tools >> Greasemonkey >> User Scrip Commands… >> Export Facebook Phonebook.

The application that will export the data may require you to login with a Google Account but will then transfer you to a page where it will allow you export your friend’s phone numbers into Address Book.

Adding to Address Book

Once you’ve ran the Greasemonkey script to export Facebook Phone numbers and have found yourself on the AddressBooker menu, select Export as vCard. In the popup window that appears, select Open with Address Book and then press Ok.

Address Book should then launch and ask you to confirm that you’d like add the contacts to Address book. Allow Address book to import the new vCard details and then merge the contact details on any overlapping imported contacts.

Once sync’d, Address Book on your desktop and iPhone will now contain the name and phone numbers of your friends who have shared their number on Facebook.

Putting together the power of the internet and sport would seem a natural combination for a New Zeal

Putting together the power of the internet and sport would seem a natural combination for a New Zealand company. What’s more surprising is the success that Auckland-based AllTeams has had overseas.

AllTeams provides a web-based system that allows sports clubs to stay in touch with players, supporters and sponsors, offering services such as news, competition draws, results, videos, and text messaging.

In New Zealand AllTeams has signed on around 30 sports clubs. Its bigger coup, however, was achieved in Britain, where the company pitched for, and won, a contract to run a pilot system for school sports administration in the West Midlands area. The pilot scheme will initially cover 40 schools in the Black Country, Birmingham, Hereford and Worcester. The project is part of the British Department of Culture, Media and Sport’s drive to create a national database of school sports results.

If it goes well, plans are for the same project to be introduced in 20,000 schools with nine million students, says AllTeams founder Mike Hargreaves.

In March this year, 4iP (an innovation fund belonging to Britain’s Channel 4) and Screen West Midlands put out a call for proposals that used digital networks to engage, inspire and reconnect young people to sports. Daniel Heaf, commissioner for 4iP, describes Allteams as the “undisputed favourites” when it came to picking suppliers to deliver the school sports database. AllTeams will have a small team in the West Midlands for the duration of the project and will be working with Birmingham-based Made Media.

Still high from the adrenalin of the pitch – initially carried out via Skype – Hargreaves says the West Midlands pilot project is a strong endorsement of the company’s sports administration tool.

“The base concept is built around connecting different roles within an organisation rather than having individuals manage the system,” Hargreaves adds.

If all goes according to the blueprint, AllTeams websites will dot the country’s sporting landscape, combining the networked communities offered by services such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn with database management ability.

Currently, says Hargreaves, there are isolated sports websites doing bits and pieces of what AllTeams does, but nothing that sets out to capture club administrators, members, parents, and sponsors under one platform.

“What we are doing is enabling clubs to connect better, invoking the passion and commitment that sport enthusiasts have, with a better means of communication,” says marketing director Jimmy Gardner, who spent years working at IBM.

Sports clubs in New Zealand have strong support from members but need the sponsors’ support to stay viable, and AllTeams will give clubs the tools they need to approach their sponsors effectively, Hargreaves says. Former All Black Michael Jones, chief executive of Village Sports Academy, offers this endorsement on AllTeams’ website: “AllTeams have done an amazing job on our site. We are proud to endorse a solution which helps clubs communicate and network together.”

Hargreaves – a self-confessed mad-about-sports person – came up with the idea for the business and soon roped in his cousin Will Stamers-Smith, then working in Zurich, to help with the start-up. Stamers-Smith, now AllTeam’s chief executive, brought Gardner on board.

Hargreaves is now based in Britain. Stamers-Smith says: “Once we got the contract, Mike had to plan to leave New Zealand. Splitting up the management team at this time was hard but it was something we couldn’t say no to.”

The three are excited at the prospects for Allteams to turn a healthy profit. Success would mean having some 600 New Zealand clubs signed on by the end of next year. All going according to plan, AllTeams should see a turnover of over $10 million by the end of 2012, Hargreaves says.

Clubs do not pay to list themselves on AllTeams-run sites, but are charged a commission for transactions that take place within the site.

Another business model, which involves business listings, is also being built. After three rounds of fundraising, the company has over four dozen investors – a combination of family, friends and private investors. Cash burn rate is high, Hargreaves says, given the cost of investing in a front-end commission-based sales force.

AllTeams wants to be a leader not only in the sports administration arena, but also in not-for-profit community-building, says Hargreaves, who is keen to see technology used to connect and improve the way people reach out to like-minded communities. Constructing the organisational networking site that the three envisioned was not without its complications. One of the most difficult processes was explaining to the software specialists what the website’s architecture entailed and what it had to do.

If he was doing it all again, Hargreaves says he would first hire a business analyst to translate the site’s requirements into language that developers would understand, for added efficiency.

Another key lesson he offers is this: “The thing to do is not try to bite off too much – trying to have everything prepared for the perfect launch.

“I think if you come from a structured business background, you can get too much into the details you end up developing down the line, where it might not be as important [as] focusing on getting revenue in the door.”

Negotiating an English country road can be a nerve-wrecking affair. Plagued by single-track lanes, tight bends, and sudden dips, you can never be certain of what’s in store just around the corner.

Similarly, steering your business through a volatile currency market is a real challenge. The pound’s 25% fall in value against the euro over the last year has had major impact on UK businesses. In fact independent research for Moneycorp revealed the weak pound has had an impact on 92% of businesses trading internationally.

It is a tale of two sides. For importers cost pressures have heightened, but for exporters opportunities to profit have been plentiful. So as a country reliant on imports and exports, managing your exposure is crucial, but challenging. Unexpected rate movements can eliminate all important profits.

Despite the uncertainty now and in the future, there are a number of steps any company can take to manage currency exposure and get back in the driving seat. If your business is importing or exporting, and you need to manage the dips and swerves of an unpredictable pound, there are some simple steps to effectively managing exposure. For more info to help your business click here

Or should you have any questions about the currency market, please do post your question and we will get back to you.

On the one hand, business is tough. South African companies are facing increased competition, particularly in Africa. On the other hand, there are still many opportunities in the energy and telecommunications infrastructure markets, and some projects are less at risk of being delayed. These include smaller to medium sized projects and those that involve “niche” technologies. This is exactly the space in which many South African electrotechnical companies excel… (more)

Regional screen agency Screen WM will match fund the investment into AllTeams out of its Digital Media Fund. Details of the figures invested have not been released.

AllTeams will base a small team in the West Midlands for the duration of the project and will be working with Birmingham-based Made Media on the production of the site. The project, called SCORES, will feature results for more than 40 schools based in the Black Country, Birmingham and Hereford & Worcester and is the first stage of an ambitious project by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to commission a national database of school sports results.

The site will be free for schools to use but 4iP anticipates SCORES will be financial sustainable if the DCMS goes on to commission a national database of school sports results as part of its ongoing commitment to building a vibrant sports culture across the UK. The national database could operate for all five to 19-year-olds involved in the widest range of school sports.

Head of 4iP Tom Loosemore said: “A key ambition of 4iP is to use the power of digital networks to engage, inspire and reconnect young people and help them change their lives.

“The Schools Sports Results website is a fantastic initiative that, if effective, will encourage more children in England to become involved in playing sports.”

Jason Hall, head of innovation for Screen West Midlands, said: “This is another great example of how the West Midlands is steadily building its reputation at the forefront of digital innovation – particularly around using digital and social media for social good. “We are delighted to be supporting AllTeams through the delivery of this project and hope that this regional pilot can act as another shining example of good practice and great design that can be rolled out nationally in the very near future.”

The US population is approaching 300 million people. In contrast, the world population is 6 billion

The US population is approaching 300 million people. In contrast, the world population is 6 billion. Therefore, 96 percent of the world lives outside of the United States. Yet, it is still difficult with the world becoming smaller everyday for companies to grasp the sheer magnitude of finding global customers. US companies are s-l-o-w-l-y warming up to the fact their customer base can be beyond domestic borders.

As an export/global marketing consulant, I understand getting started is quite overwhelming. There is so much information to digest that one would want to give up after reading the second page. But, it doesn’t have to be. Here are some tips to get you started on the right track to finding global customers and successfully making sales. As a rule of thumb, it will take one to two years from the time you start this endeavor until the time you actually make a sale. Patience is key. Keep in mind, this list is not exhaustive nor are the steps in the exact order.

Look for similarities

Language and culture are two that stand out the most. It is easier to get your product into a foreign market when your target audience is already familiar with it or can easily understand its attributes. Not to mention, you save money when only slight modifications (i.e. converting to metrics) need to be made to marketing materials and labels vs. translation costs and printing new materials.

If there are other countries on the US dollar (El Salvador and Panama are two that are close to home) that you think could be potential markets, look at those, too. You may have to translate materials but you don’t have to worry about currency exchange rates.

Economics

Look into markets that have similar income levels to match your product. Keep in mind that pricing product should not include all of your domestic costs, only production, marketing and shipping the product globally.

Stable economies are necessary as well. Most companies do not think about this because the US has a stable government, whether it changes every two to four years. There are no threats of political uprisings, coup d’etats, port blockades, national strikes or nationalizing industries (well, the recent banking and auto industries in the US are the exception).

Market Access

Once you pinpoint and narrow down some global markets, ask the next question, “does your product have market access?” If not, what is it going to take to get it? If you belong to a national trade association that has the ear of the US government, seek their guidance. They can tell you if market access of your product is a priority in gaining market access to certain countries.

On the flip side, is your product even allowed to be sold on the global market? Certain types of intellectual property, firearms/weapons, drugs and chemicals are not allowed to be transfered to other countries by the US. In some cases, export licenses must be issued by the US government.

Market Visits

Visiting and doing research in your target markets is not only necessary but it shows your committment to servicing it. It also gives you firsthand knowledge of the customer base, culture, wants/needs, distribution system, etc.

If you have a US-based company, the US government is at your disposal. The USDA has the Foreign Agricultural Service based all over the world ready to assist US ag exporters with finding customers and locating trade shows, etc. The US Department of Commerce also assists American businesses who are non-agricultural based. You should seek the assistance of your state department of agriculture or economic development first. They can assist you with contacting US government officials. All of this is either free or of relatively no cost to your business.

Sending product overseas is becoming easier every day. Now that I have given you some resources, you’ll need to build your export team…

If you want to move your Thunderbird email, settings and plugins to another computer on Windows Vist

If you want to move your Thunderbird email, settings and plugins to another computer on Windows Vista or Windows Seven, here’s how to do it. (If you’ve got another version of Windows, you may need to tweak the process to locate your Profile folder. Check out details here.)

Set up Thunderbird on your new computer/drive and launch it.

Don’t bother importing anything. But you need to get Thunderbird going to set up the AppData folder. This is where everything gets stored.

Close Thunderbird.

Now find your old Profile folder. The easiest way to do this is to copy the following into your Explorer address bar:

C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming

(clicking on the address bar will change the appearance from

to the more familiar:)

If, like me, you’re moving from one partition on a drive to another, or your old stuff is on an external drive, you may also need to change the driver letter.

And then replace the [User Name] with your old user name (and remove the square brackets.)

This should take you to the following folder:

Go into the Profiles folder and find whatever folder in there has the suffix default:

Now open another Explorer folder (right click on the folder icon in your taskbar and select Windows Explorer:)

Do the same thing as before, pasting in the above text and replacing it with your new Thunderbird location. Find the profile folder. There should be an existing default folder in there.

Now drag the old default profile folder you found above into the new Profile folder. (This should keep a copy of the old profile folder, so long as you’re moving between drives. Otherwise you may want to make a backup copy first.)

You should now have two default folders together in one folder.

Now select the new default folder that Thunderbird has just created, hit F2 and then rename its suffix from default to old:

Now rename your old profile folder to the new profile folder, with the suffix default (you might just want to copy and paste the name by hitting F2 and the selecting the text, hitting Ctrl/c etc):

Now fire up Thunderbird and you should see your old emails, settings, and plugins, all working normally.

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) published the interim final rule entitled “Encryptio

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) published the interim final rule entitled “Encryption Simplification” on October 2, 2008 and it went into effect on October 15, 2009. This final rule corrects errors published in the previous rule and resolves inconsistencies identified by the public. It governs the export of hardware, software and technical data using encryption technology and many companies will need to reevaluate their compliance practices to ensure they are still complying with the new rules.

This rule removed section 744.9 of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), which set forth requirements for authorization from BIS for US persons to provide technical assistance (including training) to foreign persons with intent to aid a foreign person in the development or manufacture outside the United States of encryption commodities or software that, if US origin, would be “EI” controlled under ECCNs 5A002 or 5D002.

Section 744.9 was added to the EAR in 1996 when jurisdictions over dual-use encryption items were transferred from the Department of State to the Department of Commerce. However, other parts of the EAR that referred to section 744.9 were inadvertently not removed. Therefore, this rule removes these references in § 730.5(d), § 734.5(c), § 736.2(b)(7)(ii), and § 744.1(a)(1). In addition, other corrections are made to harmonize with revisions made in the “Encryption Simplification” rule published on October 3, 2008. Some of the revisions in this rule are the results of requests for clarification from the public on the October 3 encryption simplification rule.

Written comments on this final rule may be sent by email to publiccomments@bis.doc.gov with “Encryption rule” in the subject line. To read the full summary, visit the BIS website.

A good deal of my work has traditionally been involved in international and export marketing, so for one committed to sustainability you can probably understand how that can be a difficult circle to square. Potentially, exporting can be massively detrimental to each of the four ‘E’s – ecology, economy, ethnology and ethics.

Two routes to market that I encourage exporters to explore in terms of both business growth and sustainability are licensing and franchising. Used sensitively these routes can eliminate much of the potential ecological damage done by transportation, local economies can be supported, we can be ethnologically relevant and sensitive and ethical policies and approaches to business can be propagated.

Another major plus is that we can get rapid brand growth by these routes – quicker and at far less cost than other routes to market.

July was the best month in 2009 that home “Pendings” reached the highest mark. The stock market made a nice comeback and exporting of goods have risen faster than imports. There is also a shrinking of inventory, and rates are at the lowest ever. I think this is promising, and leads me to believe, that home sales and prices will begin stabilizing throughout the rest of this year.

Women entrepreneurship in Ethiopia is slowly but surely making headway.

The formation of the Ethiopian Women Exporters’ Forum is fitting manifestation of this growing trend.Established in January 2000, the Ethiopian Women Exporters’ Forum (list of members) aims at bolstering the organizational and technical capacity of members and arm them with that extra competitive edge to excel in the export trade and the entrepreneurial capacity to stand up to the challenges of international trade and commerce.
