A Pair Of Andre Dawson 2004 Sweet Spot Classic Cards!!

Produced by Upper Deck, and part of their Sweet Spot Classics Famous Firsts set, these 2 cards are SWEET!!!!

The card on the right, featuring Andre in ‘Cubbie Blue’ is numbered 413/1987 and honors his incredible 1987 MVP season with the Cubs.

The card on the left, with Andre in White, is serial numbered 552/1990 and it pays homage to an incredible feat Andre achieved in 1990.  On May 2, 1990, Andre was the first player in major league history to be intentionally walked 5 times in a single game.

1990 Headline: Tim Raines Traded To Chicago White Sox!

During the offseason of 1990, Tim Raines was shipped off to the Chicago White Sox after 12 seasons with the Montreal Expos.  In typical Expos form, it was out with the old and in with the new.  The Expos had a talented crop of young rookies in the early 1990’s and wanted to give them playing time so they dumped their veterans – including their 7-time All-star Raines.

During his 12 years with Montreal, Raines shined as one of the game’s best lead-off hitters.  With a solid, and decade-long .300 batting average, Raines was the ideal guy to start each game with the goal of igniting his team’s offense.  And boy did he deliver…  With the Expos, Raines collected 634 stolen bases while scoring 934 runs.  He also developed a knack for driving in runs as he collected 552 RBI while batting lead-off.  He even hit 96 home runs!!!

Montreal’s loss eventually became the White Sox, Yankees, A’s, Marlins, and Orioles gain as Tim Raines was a classy ballplayer both on and off the field!!!

4ooth different card that is….  And I wanted to make this one count!!!

I think I did a pretty good job… Agreed?

When I first encountered the Sweet Spot Signature card I was amazed and in awe.  I love the style.  I love the design.  I love the vintage look.  But most of all, I love the creativity of the card. 

And while I don’t intentionally show off every card I buy to my wife, when I flashed this one at her she actually took it from me, looked it over for a few seconds, and muttered ‘That’s pretty cool’.  Inspired, she now wants to start her own baseball card blog!!  JK – LOL!!!

Back to the card…  I was a little fearful of these because I had seen several examples of fading on various blogs.  But the Dawson signature on this one looks nice and bold so I had to scoop it up!!!

And now with 400 different Andre Dawson cards in my collection, I am poised and ready to go after #500!!!!

It took just 8 days for Jeff Reardon to return all 4 cards I sent him – and they are signed perfectly!!

Reardon lives roughly 40 miles North of me.  It’s nice to see how quickly these cards came back.

Jeff Reardon enjoyed a solid 16-year career in the big leagues and was a big-time closer for more than a decade.  While playing for 7 teams, he collected 367 saves and compiled a record of 73-77.  Back when 30 saves was something to brag about, Reardon was surpassing that goal regularly.  In total he had 7 seasons of 30 or more saves, with 3 of them reaching the 40-mark.

Jeff Reardon has a neat signature.  I have never seen a ‘J’ like that before and if you examine it closely it kind of looks like a ‘J’ and a ‘G’ are written on top of each other…

Andre Dawson 1988 Fleer Baseball’s League Leaders

I picked up this ‘oddball’ in a recent shopping bonanza on www.sportlots.com.

The card is rather dull, and I battled between showing it off or just throwing it into a top-loader and into my Dawson collection.

I decided to show it to you, but for a different reason.  I want to show you what NOT to do if you are a baseball card company.

I am only going to examine the top 1/8 of the card because that is enough to classify this little subset as a failure…

There is so much crap going on in that little header space of the card that the collector just gets lost in what Fleer has tried to present.  First you have the pinstripes, which are a nice baseball themed addition, but their coloring and thickness don’t really add anything to this specific design.  And then there is the text.  2 colors and 3 sizes is just too random.  It looks pasted together and nothing flows.

Am I happy to add this card to my collection?  Of course – I am always excited to add a new Andre Dawson card to my PC.  But this card is bad, really bad!!  And that is not the ‘bad’ that once meant good either… 

I wanted to work on a few more signed cards for my ‘Inscription Set’.  So, on my way to work this morning, I dropped this little package off at the Post Office.

Bt my estimation, I am 1/2 way through this special set of signed Andre Dawson cards.  And when I get these bad boys back from ‘The Hawk’ I will be that much closer to completion!!

The inscriptions I requested this time??  Just some of Andre’s greatest offensive stats:  438 home runs, 400/300 Club, 1,591 RBI, and 1,373 Runs Scored.

‘Same Card, Different Paths’ – Card #24

1981 Topps - Card #479 – AKA – ‘The Tim Raines Rookie Card’

Tim Raines – This 7-time All-star and consistent MVP threat was a solid 5-tool player.  Raines’s specialty was stealing bases(he ranks 5th all-time), but his game was so much more than that.  ‘Rock’ scored 1,571 runs during his 23-season career.  He collected 2,605 hits.  He knocked in 980 runs, primarily as a lead-off hitter.  And he also won a World Series title in 1996 with the New York Yankees.

Roberto Ramos – Ramos played 6 seasons in the big leagues, including 2 separate stints with the Expos.  He complied a .190 batting average and had 44 hits in 103 career games.  In total, Ramos has 16 career hits: 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, and 11 singles.

Bobby Pate – Pate’s major league career lasted just 31 games.  A minor league professional, Pate was drafted in 1972, but did not debut in the majors until 1981.  In total, Pate amassed 12 career hits and 5 RBI.   He left the sport in 1981 after playing in just eight games.

One of the next inscriptions I want to add is ‘438 Home Runs’.  And when I send these kinds of requests to ‘The Hawk’, I try to find a card that matches the theme of my requested inscription.  So, I am going to leave this post as a ’sticky’ and give the readers of ‘30-YOC’ an opportunity to help me choose the card I send to match this inscription.

Andre Dawson 1996 Pinnacle

I really like this card.  And while I can do without all of the Gold foil at the bottom of the card’s design, the photo is perfect.

Imagine being a rookie in the league and while you’re sitting in the dugout you turn your head to the left and you see Andre Dawson sitting there.  WoW!!!!  What a thrill, huh???  1996 aws Dawson’s last year in the majors.  And while his playing time and productivity tailed off, his mystique was still strong as ever. 

A silent leader, a great locker room presence, and a man dedicated to the game, Andre Dawson is a class act!!!

There is one, just one, dealer at these shows that I visit each and every time I attend.  And while we’re not on a first name basis, he does know that I collect Dawson and keeps them in a separate box for me to peruse.

When I saw him, he got the box out and I dove in.

Andre Dawson 2002 Flair Greats

Some of these vintage-esque cards issued in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s are impressive.  The 2002 Flair set qualifies!!!

This card is so much better looking in person than in the below scan.  The cardstock is thick, and the glossy finish is perfect.

I love what the photographer has captured for us here – Andre is watching the ball he just crushed!!!  As he is getting ready to drop his bat and sprint towards first base, I have to wonder if he reached base safely on this play.  Something tells me that the answer is a resounding – YES!!!

I’d like to answer a few questions that people ask me all the time.

Andre Dawson 2007 Sweet Spot Classic Memorabilia Card

I’d been wanting to add another Game Used Andre Dawson card to my collection for a few weeks now.  And with the baseball cad show at the Coral Square mall yielding nothing to satisfy me, I immediately ran to Ebay when I got home to see what was available.

I found this card and was immediately drawn to it.  This is my first Game-used card of ‘The Hawk’ featuring a color that is not White, Expos Blue, or Cubbie Blue!!!

En el news donde se habla del Modern Warfare 2, comparándolo con los estrenos más exitosos del mundo del entretenimiento, nos compunge corregir que The Dark Knight no es más dueño del primer día más taquillero en la historia del cine. El título acaba de serle robado por otro filmurciélago… ¡¡The Twilight Saga: New Moon!! Los reportes indican que la película pasó los 73 millones de dólares sólo en EE.UU., así que sumándole lo del Reino Unido seguro pasó el record del encapuchado… Ciertamente un indicio de que el fin de los días se acerca… ¡¡Peeero por lo menos no pudo ganarle a los 310 millones del Modern Warfare!! (todavía hay esperanzas)

L’oeuvre de Kengo Kuma, dont nous vous parlions déjà dans un post sur le Nezu Museum, est exposée en ce moment a la galerie Ma, une des nombreuses galeries d’architecture de Tokyo.

Comme l’indique le nom de l’expo, “Studies in Organic”, les réalisations de Kuma sont très inspirées par la vie; je viens de dévorer le livre de l’expo dans lequel l’architecte explique qu’il veut faire de la “non-architecture”, il veut qu’on voit d’abord le site environnant plutôt qu’une forme qui viendrait comme un cheveu sur la soupe.

J’aime beaucoup cette démarche toute en humilité et en respect de l’humain. On a parfois l’impression que les architectes-stars (Hadid, Gehry…) se préoccupent de faire du joli, du remarquable et de laisser leur signature, plutôt que de penser à l’usage et à l’expérience des utilisateurs des lieux.

Bref, les bisontins ont bien de la chance de voir arriver en 2011 un centre culturel conçu par Kuma. On en voit la maquette sur cette photo et plus de détails sur le site besac.com (le surnom de la ville de Besançon par les -jeunes- locaux…). Ce sera la première réalisation de Kuma en France et dans la foulée suivra la FRAC Marseille.

Cela dit, pas sûr que tous les gens de la région voit ce projet d’un très bon œil. Il y a vraiment un fossé entre le Japon et la France pour ce qui est d’accepter l’architecture contemporaine. Il sera intéressant d’investiguer sur la question d’ailleurs, mais plus tard ! c*

Today is the launch of my new snowboard blog.  I will be using this blog to keep track of all my snowboard related activities.  A synopsis of all of the major trips that I have been on in the past few years can be found on the Pre 2010 page. 

This past weekend I went to the Boston Ski/Snowboard expo with Conor, Jill, DJ, Jake, and Chad.  DJ was not impressed with the lack of margaritas, but they did have beer on hand.  Seth Wescott was advertised as being at the Sugarloaf booth, however I didn’t see him while we were there.  I was able to find some new snowboard pants which should match up with my new jacket.  So this means in the last year I have purchased 2 new jackets, and 2 new pants (I haven’t worn either pair of pants yet). 

After the expo Jake, Chad, DJ and I went to Boston Beer works for some grub and drinks, while Conor and Jill drove to DJ’s to drop their car off for the night.  Two hours later Conor, Jill, and Sarah joined us at Beer works.  Eventually we made our way over to the Boston Blues Club to watch the latest  TGR movie.  The show was a bit unorganized but thankfully they served drinks.  We were joined by Ei, and Megan, and some of their friends.  We eventually made our way to Lansdowne Pub where we spent the rest of the evening.

Dernière grosse déception en date, Chasing Napoléon la nouvelle exposition du Palais de Tokyo.

Max Fécamp, Napoléon à Austerlitz (sans le cheval blanc d'Henri IV).

Une scénographie baclée, un service minimum pour la médiation pour des œuvres vraiment pas terribles et un “thème” hyper foireux (je reparlerai des “thème foireux” dans un prochain post  sur Dead Line au MAMVP) à la recherche de la polémique fastoche à la petite semaine (hommage à “Unabomber”… no comment!). Perle ultime de la novlangue n’importequiste de l’art contemporain, ces deux phrases prélevées dans la brochure rachitique de Chasing Napoléon: “Vacillement des interprétations, renversement des valeurs, paradoxe des situations… CHASING NAPOLEON prend acte d’une bérézina qui met en déroute le réel lui-même. Après GAKONA et SPY NUMBERS, le spectre électromagnétique et l’infra-mince, Marc-Olivier Wahler réunit dix-huit artistes dont les œuvres sont autant d’instructions pour se soustraire au regard et se réfugier dans les marges du visible.”.Plouf, Plouf! Résultat, on ne sais toujours pas ce que Napoléon vient faire dans cette galère à part pour placer “bérézina” dans le communiqué de presse, mot qu’on ne trouve plus que dans les colonnes du Canard Enchainé. Où peut-être que la figure de Napoléon est convoquée (comme on dit!) pour son coté “folasse”, celle d’un mec “glamour en diable” qui va à la guerre en collants blancs et petit boléro très près du corps…

Bizarrement les deux pièces qui sortent du lot sont les 6 film de 2 seconde de David Fincher et les mandalas de Paul Laffoley, autrement dit un réalisateur hollywoodien et un artiste outsider des années 1970! Comme cela se fait depuis plusieurs expos, le Palais montre des oeuvres d’un individu “borderline” (Paul Laffoley) et pour le coups ses mandalas apocalyptiques sont plutôt réussit. Mais l’astuce semble un peu  grossière pour montrer des trucs un peu narratifs (et même de la peinture, God Damned!) sans avoir l’air d’y toucher.

Finalement, Chasing Napoléon laisse le goût d’une bande annonce molassonne vantant les mérites d’une expo qui n’aura pas lieu.
