The inability to do much of anything else at work drove me to do this review of E.T. for the Atari. Yes, I know there are a glut of video game reviews on the interwebs but there’s a glut of movie reviews too and this won’t be a regular thing, mainly because my shitty laptop gets upset when I run the emulator, the screen capture software and Audacity. I Spent $1 Million of the School’s Money Secretly Trying to Contact Alien Life for 8 Years and now You Fire Me? – MESA, ARIZONA -  Nowadays, with the massive advancements in computer technology, there are lots and lots of people who are completely hooked on the internet.  It’s like a crackhead’s hunger for crack only it involves Ebay and all night shopping with a credit card.  But, with the good comes the bad and somebody always gets busted for using a computer for something naughty.  For instance, right now you could probably snoop through your boss’ computer and find emails from the ugly broad in human resources who he’s been banging every day after work since the Halloween party.  Or, there’s probably a very good chance that you could go home and find a boatload of porno on your dad’s laptop, only he’d swear he didn’t know how it got on there because he doesn’t know how to use a computer.  Well, that’s not even close to what this space ranger did.  He was fired for taking a few liberties on the job,  but  there wasn’t any internet pornography involved, only aliens.

A former Arizona school district technology director was canned for secretly using school computer networks to find aliens.  Even worse, his jones to reach DefCon 3 cost  the district more than $1 million in hard cash.   Apparently the Carl Sagan wannabe downloaded the SETI (S each for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) application that uses internet connected computers worldwide to analyze radio telescope data in an experiment to find little green men on other planets.   Though he did not directly break any rules for using the computers in secret, he did pirate the district’s system and it did screw up all of the internet connections on campus, including the superintendent’s online subscription to SmallJuggs.com and GILF.net (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091202/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_school_worker_space_aliens)

District officials believe it will take more than $1 million to fix the problem, including removal of the alien searching software, though that seems like a ridiculous amount to delete a bunch of ufo files.  Since the economy is down the solar paneled crapper, those fools on the school board should cut some costs and  just hire back the dumbass who put them on there in the first place, instead of shelling out a whopping bag of money for another team of dumbasses to delete it.   After all, he’s the one who sabotaged the network before he was officially fired and he is probably the only one who knows how to fix it.  As they say, don’t get mad, get even.  Just cut off the boss’ internet  connection for good, then tell him to shove the job up his Millenium Falcon.

Some believe that this is evidence that life as we know it exist elsewhere in the universe. Dr. Edgar Mitchell, renowned, U.S scientist and astronaut form Appollo 14, is adamant in his claims that alien lifeforms do exsit and that the U.S.  government and NASA have been covering up this fact for the past sixty years. A couple of weeks ago I was reading a couple of articles on the author’s thoughts that either Obama or some other foreign government was going to announce that UFO’s and ET’s exist.  This announcement would be coming forth sometime in December or early 2010.  I personally do not believe they are technically ET’s, but demons.  Basically Satan’s helpers.  I discussed it with a few people and could see how a world government could urgently be created.  I also thought of a conspiracy nut.  Then….. a couple days ago Fox news had an article concerning the Vatican and that it was seeking signs of alien life.  Here is a link to the story:

In the article there is a puzzling quote from a Jesuit priest, Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, an astronomer and director of the Vatican Observatory.  Here is the puzzling quote:

“The questions of life’s origins and of whether life exists elsewhere in the universe are very suitable and deserve serious consideration,” said the Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, an astronomer and director of the Vatican Observatory.”

I do not know about you, but as a Christian I do not question the origins of life.  My Lord created the universe and all that is within it.

Another interesting quote is “How can we rule out that life may have developed elsewhere?”.  Hmmmm. Sounds like Rev. Funes believes in evolution.  Then the article continues and states that top clergy openly endorse scientific ideas like the Big Bang Theory for a reasonable explanation of the creation of the universe.  If that was not enough, the article states the Vatican sponsored a conference on evolution to mark the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s “The Origin of Species.”

I am a little off topic here, but I would not think the top clergy of the Vatican actually believes in evolution and the big bank theory.

Back to the UFO’s and ET’s, the thoughts are that discovery of alien life may only be a few years away.  Maybe the authors of the articles I was reading were not conspiracy nuts.  I definitely see how ET’s  could turn this world upside down and a world government would be urgently set-up.

Yesterday MSNBC reported that the Vatican has again called for a conference involving serious scientists to discuss the implications of astrobiology — life in space. Despite the mocking sneers of the media, growing numbers of serious thinkers are doing the calculations and scratching their heads. When I was a child, I was assured that earth-like planets elsewhere in the universe were virtually impossible, statically. Now we know of several rocky orbs circling distant suns. Our own sudden advances in technology have started some to think that if we raced from heavier-than-air flight to the moon in only 66 years, and from landline to audio implant in about a century, maybe other intelligent life could do the same? What would the implications be for the geocentric world of Genesis and the Gospels?

The Catholic Church and Science are hardly best buddies; frequently they are not even on speaking terms. No, the tide did not change to a warm embrace with the (centuries late) apology to Galileo or the sudden realization under John Paul II that evolution is “more than just a theory.” All one has to do is think of the issue of stem-cell research and the eagerly offered hand is suddenly withdrawn. But on the issue of aliens, perhaps the church can race ahead of the projected God-of-the-gaps, do an end-run, and be ready to embrace E.T. when he finally makes himself known.

Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful that the Vatican has embraced evolution and thumbed its Roman nose to the creationists. (They deserve even more than that!) I am glad they are considering the possibilities of extra-terrestrial life. There is, however, a nagging doubt in my mind that they may be coming to the conclusion that the late Larry Norman once did that “if there’s life on other planets, then I’m sure that he must know, and he’s been there once already and has died to save their souls.” What good is advancement in science if mythology refuses to budge? What would an extra-terrestrial priest look like? What if they don’t have blood to fill their chalices? Do they have trumpet-horns on their saucers to announce the second coming? Yes, let’s explore our universe, but let’s not forget to update our credibility meters as well.

ST: Saya pikir hal yang paling menarik bagi para pembaca majalah berkisar pada tipe-tipe peradaban yang berbeda-beda, dan juga kepadatan [populasi] peradabannya. Apa pendapat Anda, pendapat berdasar, tentang jumlah peradaban yang mungkin ada di setiap galaksi atau di galaksi kita?

MK: Ehmm, ini sulit. Namun demikian, para astrofisikawan telah berspekulasi apakah di galaksi kita – bukan galaksi hipotetis, tapi benar-benar di galaksi kita – atau di galaksi lain ada peradaban tipe tiga. Dan pertanyaan besar yang kita punya adalah, jika memang tiga tipe itu ada, apakah kita cukup maju untuk mendeteksi mereka – untuk mendeteksi kehadiran mereka? Mungkin yang berikut terdengar seperti pertanyaan bodoh, seandainya ada sebuah peradaban galaktik tipe tiga yang hebat: apakah kita mengetahuinya? Jawaban yang akan diberikan oleh kebanyakan ilmuwan mungkin adalah “tidak”. Barangkali kita sangat primitif sehingga tidak mengetahui bahwa di halaman belakang kita ada peradaban tipe tiga. Seperti itulah primitifnya teknologi kita. Kita tidak mengetahui frekuensi komunikasi yang mereka gunakan, kita tidak mengetahui bagaimana ia berfungsi, kita tidak mengetahui apa motivasi mereka, itulah maksudnya tentang betapa primitifnya kita. Namun, masalahnya adalah kita selalu berasumsi bahwa mereka sama seperti kita, hanya saja lebih maju. Kita berasumsi bahwa cara mereka menggunakan radio sama dengan kita. Kita berasumsi bahwa mereka memiliki jenis-jenis teknologi yang sama dengan kita, hanya saja lebih hebat. Saya kira ini adalah kekeliruan besar, karena menurut saya String Theory itu, seandainya ia benar, menunjukkan bahwa seharusnya kelak ada banyak revolusi, banyak revolusi yang akan terjadi berkenaan dengan energi, pemahaman materi, pemahaman gravitasi, dan saya kira adalah keliru jika kita ingin memaksakan pemikiran tipe nol kita pada peradaban tipe tiga.

ST: Ya. Menurut saya kita bisa mengambil sebuah perumpamaan dari Erich von Daniken, di mana ia menyamakan masalah ini dengan suatu suku pedalaman yang mencoba berkomunikasi dengan pesawat jet dengan memakai drum bongo.

MK: Ya. Bahkan lebih buruk. Jika Anda amati… jika Anda berjalan di jalan raya dan melihat segerombolan semut, perbedaan antara teknologi semut dan Anda kurang lebih sama dengan perbedaan antara teknologi tipe nol dengan teknologi tipe tiga. Semut tidak tahu bagaimana kita berkomunikasi, mereka tidak tahu apa bahasa kita, mereka tidak mengerti maksud kita, mereka tidak mengetahui apapun tentang empat kekuatan fundamental. Semut sama sekali tidak mengerti siapa sebenarnya kita. Satu-satunya perbedaan adalah kita punya String Theory dan ini memberi kita harapan bahwa di sisi lain galaksi kita, seandainya di sana ada makhluk berakal, String Theory juga akan ditemukan oleh mereka [makhluk cerdas tersebut]. Seringkali dikatakan bahwa seandainya Einstein tak pernah hidup, kita akan tetap menemukan Teori Einstein melalui String Theory. Teori Einstein adalah salah satu getaran terendah String. Teori Einstein bukanlah apa-apa, itu hanya sebuah catatan – catatan mengenai String.

ST: Kalau begitu, ini tentang menemukan realitas. Jika Anda mencari realitas, Anda akan selalu mendapatkan hasil yang sama.

MK: Benar. Maka alien juga semestinya mematuhi realitas dan kaidah termodinamika yang sama dengan kita. Klasifikasi ini berasal dari Nikolai Kardashev, seorang astrofisikawan terkenal asal Rusia yang mengajukan pertanyaan: Bisakah kita mengukur – bisakah kita mengukur peradaban-peradaban extra-terrestrial? Ada dua cara untuk mengukur peradaban ini. Pertama melalui energi, yang kedua melalui simpanan informasi. Jika Anda menghitung jumlah total bit (informasi) yang tersimpan dalam sebuah peradaban, itu juga memungkinkan Anda untuk menggolongkan peradaban-peradaban; jadi tak hanya melalui energi, tapi juga melalui simpanan informasi. Kita andaikan Anda adalah Q tipe tiga, maka Q itu boleh jadi merupakan peradaban yang bisa memanfaatkan Unified Field Theory untuk melintasi galaksi-galaksi – jika ini mungkin. Setiap huruf alfabet bisa disamakan dengan jumlah bit yang mereka proses. Huruf A adalah 10 sampai 1, B adalah 10 sampai 2, maka jika kita mengetikkan 3Q, itu berarti Anda merupakan peradaban super. Peradaban yang memiliki energi sepuluh miliar kali lipat, sepuluh miliar kali lipat dari energi zaman sekarang, sementara konsumsi energi dapat disamakan dengan huruf Q.

ST: Ehmm – itu cukup sulit dipercaya.

MK: Ya, memang benar.

PG: Saya punya satu pertanyaan. Ada seseorang yang berbicara tentang Fermi Paradoxon. Dengan teori Anda, dengan ucapan Anda, Anda telah memecahkan Fermi Paradoxon.

MK: Apa? Oh, Fermi Paradoxon. Benar. Pertanyaannya adalah, “Di mana mereka”, iya kan? Jawabannya adalah, dengar, kita selalu memandangnya dari segi teknologi kita yang dipaksakan pada mereka. Kita harus memandangnya dari sisi peradaban tipe tiga. Dari sudut pandang peradaban tipe tiga, barangkali mereka saat ini sedang men-scan sepuluh miliar bintang di galaksi Bimasakti. Mereka barangkali sedang mengirim satelit yang secara eksponen terus meluas. Mereka barangkali sedang mendarat di bulan-bulan dan memeriksa planet-planet, sementara dari perspektif tersebut, kita benar-benar kecil/tidak berarti. Mereka mungkin tidak memiliki waktu dan energi dan bahkan mungkin kita belum termasuk tipe satu.

ST: Tapi saya sungguh yakin bahwa peradaban tipe satu pun bisa men-scan tanda-tanda kehidupan di planet lain. Sehingga, jauh sebelum mencapai masa atau tahap tipe dua atau tipe tiga, mereka bisa saja telah benar-benar tahu mengenai situasi kehidupan di galaksi.

MK: Mereka mungkin tahu hal itu. Tipe tiga mungkin sangat mengetahui bahwa tipe dua dan tipe satu ada di luar sana, dan bahkan mungkin menyadari adanya tipe tiga yang lain.

ST: Saya sedikit berspekulasi; bukankah kehidupan sebenarnya cukup langka? Jika kita mempertimbangkan Drake Equation, bisa saja salah satu faktornya dekat dengan nol, dan karena itu kita mendapatkan bilangan yang sangat kecil tapi masih [mencatatkan] periode masa yang panjang, semua tipe peradaban bisa berkembang di galaksi…..

MK: Ya. Ini adalah Zero-Time-Infinity Problem (Masalah Nol-Kali-Tak Terhingga) yang terkenal itu. Jika saya mengambil angka nol dan mengalikannya dengan tak terhingga (~), maka kita bisa mendapatkan hampir semua angka yang kita inginkan. Jadi jika nol adalah probabilitas adanya suatu peradaban, sementara tak terhingga adalah jumlah bintang yang ada di alam semesta, maka nol kali tak terhingga bisa menghasilkan apapun sebanyak yang Anda inginkan. Karena itu kita sama sekali tidak tahu pasti seberapa mungkin keberadaan makhluk berakal di galaksi. Drake sendiri menduga bahwa boleh jadi ada sepuluh ribu planet di galaksi kita – jumlah ini tidak banyak – tapi mereka kemungkinan hanya akan menjadi tipe satu dan untuk menjadi tipe tiga, ingat baik-baik, dari tipe nol menjadi tipe satu saja merupakan transisi yang sangat berbahaya. Tipe nol masih memiliki semua kebuasan fundamentalisme, nasionalisme, sektarianisme – segalanya berjalan keliru. Tipe satu bersifat planeter, mereka telah mengatasi banyak masalah karena memiliki sistem planet, cara planeter dalam menangani konflik antar kelompok etnik atau semacamnya. Sedangkan tipe nol sangat bengis. Dari sepuluh ribu planet yang mendapat status tipe nol dan bisa mencapai luar angkasa dengan sinyal, boleh jadi hanya sedikit dari mereka yang menjadi tipe satu dan tipe dua.

ST: Apakah menurut Anda ada kesempatan bagi kita untuk menjadi, setidaknya, tipe satu?

MK: Saya kira jika kita melewati ratusan tahun ke depan, kita mungkin akan melihat sebuah abad aquarius. Teman saya, Sir Martin Reece, seorang Astronom Kerajaan Inggris Raya, menyatakan bahwa kita memiliki peluang fifty-fifty untuk menempuh periode ini. Ketika kita memiliki semua teknologi senjata pemusnah masal, kita memiliki kemampuan sekelompok kecil manusia untuk menghancurkan semua kehidupan di planet Bumi. Martin memberi kita peluang fifty-fifty untuk menegosiasikan ini dan menjadi tipe satu. Namun, menurut dia, ketika kita menjadi tipe satu, ada kemungkinan kita dapat berekspansi ke seluruh alam semesta. Kita punya kemungkinan untuk melakukan transportasi superluminal (lebih cepat dari cahaya) melalui wormhole, kita punya kemungkinan bahwa jika kita bisa menguasai Unified Field Theory, kita akan bisa menggunakannya untuk pergi ke sistem bintang lain, galaksi lain – dan bahkan mungkin menciptakan bayi alam semesta.

ST: Menciptakan bayi alam semesta?

MK: Ini adalah topik yang sangat panas dalam ilmu fisika saat ini. Stephen Hawking menulis tentang itu dalam bukunya yang berjudul “Black Holes and Baby Universes”. Bayi alam semesta mengumpulkan cukup banyak energi dalam satu titik, sehingga materi dan ruang menjadi tidak stabil. Alam semesta virtual menjadi alam semesta riil. Partikel virtual adalah partikel yang seperti hantu. Ia tidak eksis di mana-mana tapi kita merasakannya sepanjang waktu. Semua ilmu fisika modern didasarkan pada elektron virtual. Itulah mengapa kita mempunyai ilmu elektronika, contohnya. Begitulah tunneling (penerowongan/penembusan) terjadi: ketika elektron menjadi virtual. Sekarang kita mempercayai alam semesta virtual. Maka jika alam semesta bisa menjadi virtual, ia pun bisa menjadi riil jika Anda menambahkan energi padanya, oke, jadi itulah mengapa kita yakin bahwa jika kita menjadi tipe tiga, kita punya kemungkinan untuk bermain-main dengan hal ini. Tentu saja ini melebihi bayangan kita, akan tetapi tak ada dalam hukum ilmu fisika, tak satupun dalam hukum ilmu fisika, yang menghalangi ini.

PG: Jika Anda berspekulasi demikian, maka boleh jadi alam semesta kita adalah semacam bayi alam semesta yang berasal dari peradaban super yang mengetahui…..

MK: Hal itu tidak bisa dikesampingkan. Ada teori terbaru yang disebut Inflation, dan Inflation didasarkan pada inflasi internal bahwa alam semesta berpucuk dari alam semesta lain, sehingga alam semesta kita sangat mirip black hole. Jika Anda perhatikan, menurut Black Hole Equation dari Schwarzschild: mereka identik. Paramater-parameter black hole identik dengan alam semesta kita. Alam semesta kita memiliki horison, alam semesta kita sangat mirip dengan black hole, dan, dalam beberapa hal, ia adalah black hole. Ia terbelah dari alam semesta yang lebih besar dan menjadi white hole, sehingga, sedikit banyak, alam semesta kita mungkin benar-benar merupakan white hole, yaitu time-reversed black hole (black hole dengan arah waktu terbalik-penj). Kita tak pernah melihat white hole di atas sana. Kita telah mencarinya. Namun kita belum pernah melihat satu pun white hole.

ST: Dan kita mungkin sedang duduk di sebuah…

MK: Tak lain, kita kemungkinan sedang duduk di sebuah white hole.

ST: Ini pemikiran yang sangat mengejutkan.

MK: Semua ini sesuai dengan hukum fisika kita. Hanya hal-hal yang tidak sesuai dengan hukum fisika yang boleh kita tolak. Dan segala hal yang sedang saya katakan pada Anda sesuai dengan hukum fisika. Stephen Hawking dahulu mengatakan bahwa perjalanan waktu adalah mustahil karena kita tidak pernah mendapat kunjungan turis dari masa depan. Ia tidak melihat adanya turis dari masa depan yang mengambil foto dirinya, namun kini ia telah menarik pernyataan tersebut, ia tidak lagi mengatakan demikian. Ia mengatakan bahwa perjalanan waktu adalah mungkin namun sulit dilakukan dan tidak probable, tapi ia juga menyatakan bahwa perjalanan waktu kelihatannya sesuai dengan hukum fisika.

ST: Tapi, sebagaimana pernah dikatakan oleh Feynman, “Pertanyaannya bukanlah, apakah sesuatu itu mungkin; pertanyaannya adalah, apakah ia benar-benar ada.” Jadi saya ingin menanyakan tentang Teori Daniken. Menurut Anda, apakah memang benar, bukan kemungkinan belaka, bahwa di masa lalu pernah ada semacam kontak?

MK: Pertama-tama, saya percaya mereka ada di luar sana. Jika Anda memperhatikan jumlah – di visible universe, yaitu yang bisa kita lihat dengan teleskop kita, terdapat sekitar seratus miliar galaksi dan mungkin ada lebih banyak galaksi di luar horison kita. Tapi teleskop kita bisa melihat sekitar seratus miliar galaksi dan masing-masing galaksi berisi seratus miliar bintang, jadi kita mempunyai bintang sebanyak seratus miliar kali seratus miliar dan Hubble Space Telescope sekarang telah memotret informasi sistem solar, bayi sistem solar, bayi daratan ekliptik. Tahun lalu, kita telah menemukan lebih dari seratus planet yang beredar di sistem bintang lain, banyak dari mereka yang seukuran Yupiter. Jadi saya pikir, Anda harus mendebat hal sebaliknya: mengapa kita tidak melihat makhluk berakal di luar angkasa? Saya pikir daripada mendebat tentang makhluk berakal, sebaiknya Anda mendebat ke arah lain. Mengapa kita tidak melihat makhluk berakal di luar angkasa? Jadi terhadap pertanyaan pertama, “Apakah mereka ada di luar sana?”, jawabannya adalah Ya. Terhadap pertanyaan kedua, “Lalu, di mana mereka?”, baiklah, yang harus Anda tanyakan adalah, “Apakah mereka tipe tiga?” Maka kemudian kita membatasi jumlah peradaban seperti itu karena banyaknya peradaban yang tidak pernah berhasil naik ke status tipe satu. Jika Anda tipe satu dan sampai pada tipe dua, Anda abadi. Sepanjang pengetahuan sains, tidak ada yang dapat menghancurkan tipe dua. Gunung berapi, gempa bumi, zaman es…..

ST: Tapi tentu tipe tiga bisa menghancurkan tipe dua…..

MK: O iya. Hanya ada dua hal yang bisa menghancurkan tipe dua. Pertama, bunuh diri. Dan kedua, berhadapan dengan tipe tiga.

ST: Ya.

MK: Tapi di luar itu, tidak ada bencana alam yang dapat menghancurkan tipe dua. Tubrukan komet bisa dibelokkan, supernova – Anda cukup memindahkan planet atau meredam proses fusi sehingga Anda tidak terkena ledakan neutrino dari supernova tersebut. Jadi jika Anda tipe dua, Anda abadi terhadap bencana alam, kecuali bunuh diri—ini tidak alami—dan dilahap oleh tipe tiga.

ST: Anda pernah menyebutkan Star Trek, Borg, dan Q Continuum. Bagaimana kalau ternyata tipe atau bentuk eksistensi makhluk atau peradaban yang sangat maju berubah total dan bagaimana kalau evolusi ternyata mengambil jalan yang sama sekali berbeda dari yang kita bayangkan sekarang?

Elang lebih kecil dari anjing karena alasan ini. Jadi terkait kepergian kita ke luar angkasa, ehmm… mereka (penghuninya) mungkin adalah keturunan predator. Namun, tak berarti bahwa mereka akan memakan kita, karena mereka tidak terbuat dari DNA yang sama, atau DNA-nya akan sangat jauh berbeda dari struktur sel kita. Evolusi di bumi sepertinya tak seberapa, makhluk istimewa adalah makhluk yang berakal, yang ingin tahu tentang lingkungannya dan bisa menjelajah dan memanfaatkan lingkungan baru; jadi saya pikir mereka akan memiliki keingintahuan untuk menjelajah dan mengadakan kontak dengan peradaban tipe satu.

Tidak bisakah kita melihatnya jika memang di luar sana ada peradaban tipe tiga, mungkin mereka peradaban galaktik dan bisa mengontrol energi galaksi; jika kita memandang ke langit dan melihat semua galaksi, tidak bisakah kita mengenali sebuah galaksi yang tidak seperti yang lain yang…..

MK: Ehmm kami sudah memikirkan itu. Maksud saya, beberapa astronom telah mencatat bahwa ketika kita memandang ke luar angkasa, semua galaksi terlihat sama. Anda tidak melihat adanya sisa kehidupan. Sementara untuk memindahkan sesuatu di galaksi, sehingga kita bisa melihat mereka dari jauh, cukup sulit. Jika Anda memotret Bumi dengan menggunakan satelit-satelit kita, Anda akan temukan, sebagian besar satelit memperlihatkan bahwa di Bumi tidak ada kehidupan. Ini cukup menarik, tapi satelit Galileo mampu memperlihatkan bahwa ada kehidupan di Bumi.

ST: Sekarang kita tahu seperti apa tanda-tanda kehidupan, sehingga ketika kelak kita men-scan planet-planet extrasolar (di luar solar/tata surya kita-penj) dengan Darwin Project atau dengan sistem lain yang muncul di pertengahan abad, kita akan mencari ozon, kita akan mencari oksigen, kita akan mencari uap air dan jejak gas lain yang menjadi pertanda kehidupan.

MK: Untuk tipe nol, ya? Ketika kita telah menjadi tipe satu, kita tidak lagi punya unsur kimia hidrokarbon.

ST: Kita masih punya ozon di atmosfer, saya kira – saya harap.

MK: Pertama-tama kita bukan harus mencari teknologi tipe nol. Kita harus mencari teknologi tipe tiga di Bumi, contohnya, nano technology. ST: Mungkin tidak akan terlihat.

MK: Bisa sekecil kotak roti. Hanya perlu memiliki simpanan informasi untuk mereplikasi diri dan memulai proses pencarian emisi tipe satu, mempelajari peradaban tipe satu, dan mereka bisa saja ada di Bumi. MK: Bahkan mungkin yang tidak bisa dipahami sekalipun. Benar. Ingat, sebagaimana Anda katakan, teori-teori kita didasarkan pada pemikiran yang diproyeksikan di zaman sekarang.

ST: Dan itu berubah secara dramatis hanya dalam tiga puluh tahun terakhir.

MK: Yeah. Hanya dalam periode sesingkat itu. Kita tidak lagi melihat model UFO tahun tiga puluhan atau empat puluhan. Kita melihat kemungkinan transportasi dimensi yang menembus dimensi meski tanpa pesawat ruang angkasa, contohnya. Kita mencari kemungkinan micro-miniaturization dan penggabungan karbon-silikon. ST: (Tertawa) mungkin itu robot alien….

MK: …..ia tidak bisa membayangkan adanya kaca. Mereka tidak bisa membayangkan ada sesuatu yang seperti kaca, sehingga mereka menabrak benda-benda. Anda tahu ada benda lain yang seperti kaca…. Anda benar, kita tahu tidak ada yang lain. Itulah kenapa saya menjadi fisikawan dan itulah kenapa saya berpikir bahwa dari sudut pandang fisika, hukum fisika tidak akan berubah dalam seribuan tahun ke depan sampai kita menemukan lapisan baru dalam fisika.

ST: Tapi Anda tidak tahu sebenarnya seberapa besar porsi pengetahuan kita saat ini. Maksud saya, pengetahuan yang Anda ketahui saat ini mungkin ternyata hanya bintik kecil dari model yang jauh lebih besar.

MK: Yeah. Namun kita pikir, tidak semua orang, ada satu Final Theory. Saya kira sekarang kita sangat dekat dengan Final Theory. Contohnya biologi – ketika akhirnya DNA terungkap, itu merupakan final theory. Mulai sekarang, semua riset dalam biologi berbasiskan DNA.

ST: Tapi Anda sedang menjelaskan alam realitas.

MK: Yeah, saya menginginkan DNA realitas. Benar. Ini yang kita inginkan – kode kosmik, yang dalam biologi telah ditemukan. Ahli biologi telah memiliki kode kosmik mereka sendiri. Kita sedang mencari DNA alam semesta, kode genetik yang membuat alam semesta kita tercipta.

ST: Dan kemudian segalanya akan menjadi fisika terapan?

MK: Ehmm, lihat saja biologi. Biologi adalah DNA terapan. Dan lihat juga kimia. Kimia tak lain adalah fisika atom terapan dan fisika atom adalah fisika nuklir terapan. Dan fisika nuklir terapan adalah, kami pikir, String Theory terapan. String Theory sendiri, kami pikir, adalah DNA dari semua teori. MK: Ya. Satelit WMAP (Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe) pada Februari tahun ini mengambil gambar bayi alam semesta yang bertanggal 379.000 tahun setelah permulaan penciptaan. Ini memberi kita gambaran Big Bang paling detail, gambar-gambar setelah ledakan Big Bang. Lima belas tahun mendatang kita akan meluncurkan LISA (Laser Interferometry Space Antenna) ke luar angkasa. Tiga satelit yang akan mendeteksi gelombang gravitasi. Ini bukan gelombang udara (shockwave) setelah goncangan tapi gelombang udara sungguhan (dari Big Bang). Kita akan memotretnya dengan satelit-satelit kita lima belas tahun mendatang. Kita telah diberi persetujuan awal dari NASA, tiga satelit yang mengorbit membentuk segitiga yang dihubungkan oleh sinar laser saat mereka beredar di luar angkasa. Gelombang yang menyentuh ketiga sinar laser ini akan menggoncangkan mereka, membuat mereka mengalami fase yang berbeda-beda. Dan kita akan mampu mendeteksi black hole, bintang neutron, dan supernova di luar angkasa, serta penciptaan itu sendiri yang hingga kini masih bergema di seluruh alam semesta. Ini seharusnya menyelesaikan teori kita. Kita seharusnya bisa mendapat informasi penting. Orang-orang mengatakan Anda tidak bisa menguji String Theory karena kita tidak memiliki atom smasher (pemecah atom) seukuran galaksi. Kita punya sesuatu yang lebih hebat dari itu. Kita punya atom smasher seukuran alam semesta. Jika Big Bang itu sendiri adalah atom smasher, ia telah memecah banyak atom ketika alam semesta tercipta. Sementara gelombang udara gravitasi, kita akan memotretnya, berasal dari sepertriliun detik Big Bang, bukan 379.000 tahun setelah Big Bang. Ini seharusnya menjelaskan teori inflasi yang merupakan teori dominan dalam kosmologi; lebih dari itu, ini juga seharusnya memberi kita firasat mengenai String Theory.

ST: Jadi Anda masih sedang menanti masa-masa yang mengasyikkan.

MK: Yeah, ini adalah masa yang hebat untuk menjadi seorang fisikawan….

ST: Saya bisa merasakan itu.

MK: Karena sekarang kita tidak sekedar membual bahwa seharusnya ada sebuah unified field theory; kita benar-benar punya itu sekarang. Kita hanya harus membuktikan bahwa ini memang Unified Field Theory. Ini memaksa kita untuk berhadapan dengan hal-hal seperti worm hole, mesin waktu, dan higher dimension (dimensi yang lebih tinggi), yang biasanya tidak ingin kita pikirkan, tapi sekarang terpaksa kita harus berhadapan dengan ini, dan di sisi lain galaksi, makhluk berakalnya juga pasti akan mengalami hal yang sama. Mereka juga akan memecah atom, mereka juga akan mengerti bahwa ada sebuah unifeid field theory yang mendasari semua kedudukan fundamental dan mereka mengalami hal yang sama dengan kita. Dan mungkin jika mereka berada seratus ribu tahunan di depan kita, mereka menggunakan ini sebagai arena bermain aktivitas mereka. Dan satu hal lagi, kita tahu dari satelit WMAP bahwa alam semesta itu sedang berakselerasi dan ia mungkin akan mati dalam big freeze triliunan tahun dari sekarang. Pada titik tersebut, saya pikir kita semestinya meninggalkan alam semesta. Setiap makhluk berakal yang maju harus mempetimbangkan opsi meninggalkan alam semesta secara serius dan pergi menuju alam semesta yang lebih hangat.

ST: Tapi saya berasumsi jika Planck Energy bisa dimanfaatkan, maka hal ini bisa diulur untuk waktu yang sangat lama?

MK: Ehmm, perluasan alam semesta sepertinya terus meningkat. Dan miliaran tahun dari sekarang, ia bisa sangat dingin sehingga kita mungkin harus meninggalkan alam semesta ini, kita mungkin harus membuat sekoci penolong (lifeboat) untuk pergi ke alam semesta lain. Itu adalah tema dalam buku saya berikutnya.

ST: Barangkali kita bisa menciptakannya sendiri.

MK: O iya. Itulah yang disebutkan Allan Guth, bapak Inflationary Theory; suatu saat di masa depan dia mungkin akan memenangkan Hadiah Nobel. Dia secara aktif menulis tentang bayi alam semesta. Sinar laser contohnya. Ia kemungkinan mampu menciptakan sinar laser super yang mengkonsentrasikan cukup energi sehingga alam semesta virtual menjadi riil. Seperti di laboratorium, kita bisa memperoleh elektron virtual dan membuatnya menjadi riil. Sinar laser super mungkin mampu membuat alam semesta virtual dan menjadikannya riil.

ST: Terkait Big Freeze – mungkin Anda pernah membaca atau setidaknya mendengar buku Freeman Dyson, Time Without End?

MK: Tidak, apa itu buku baru?

ST: Sudah lama – tahun tujuh puluhan –, dalam buku itu ia menyatakan, kebanyakan secara termodinamis, bahwa [proses termodinamika] akan sangat dingin tapi tidak akan pernah menyentuh level nol mutlak, dengan demikian setiap proses akan sangat lambat tapi tidak akan pernah benar-benar berhenti.

MK: Ia mungkin saja keliru. Ada sebuah artikel yang diterbitkan dalam Scientific American sekitar dua tahun lalu, karangan Lawrence Kraus, yang menyatakan bahwa Freeman Dyson mungkin keliru. Bagaimanapun, ia keliru karena adanya celah. Kita sekarang percaya bahwa ada sebuah konstanta kosmologis di alam semesta. Dark energy.

ST: Jadi itu diajukan kembali!

MK: Benar, diajukan kembali, diperkenalkan pada tahun 1960, namun sebenarnya pertama kali muncul pada tahun 1917; jika ada suatu dark energy maka seharusnya ada floor (level terendah). Kehidupan bisa didefinisikan sebagai pemrosesan informasi, oleh karena itu, ketika kita mencapai floor (yaitu dark energy), semua pemrosesan informasi akan berhenti.

ST: Anda benar – lagipula Freeman tidak punya suatu konstanta kosmologis.

MK: Ia tidak punya? Benar juga. Itu baru diperkenalkan tiga sampai lima tahun terakhir.

ST: Ya bukunya terbit tahun tujuh puluhan. Meski demikian, menurut saya tampak meyakinkan.

MK: Yeah, tampak meyakinkan. Benar.

PG: Tadi Anda bicara tentang buku Anda di masa mendatang. Ada beberapa mahasiswa peneliti di AAS dan barangkali Anda bisa memberi mereka suatu nasehat bagaimana mengerjakan tema ini, mungkin sangat menarik, haruskah mereka mempelajari fisika atau haruskah mereka menghubungi Anda atau apa yang harus mereka lakukan? MK: Ehmm, saya pikir sains itu semacam membangun sebuah rumah. Pertama-tama Anda harus punya fondasi yang kokoh dan riil. Semakin kokoh fondasinya, semakin baik rumah yang Anda bangun. Kemudian Anda harus menjadi seorang arsitek agar mampu membuat ruangan, jendela, dan hal-hal semacamnya. Kemudian Anda harus menjadi seorang seniman. Anda harus menjadi seniman untuk memastikan bahwa rumah itu terlihat indah dan bagus. Jadi jika kita ingin menjadi seorang ilmuwan, pertama kita harus memahami landasan riil-nya. Kita harus memahami Quantum Theory. Anda harus memahami Relativitas. Anda harus memahami teknologi DNA, memiliki fondasi riil. Kemudian Anda harus membangun ruangan, Anda harus mampu berspekulasi, Anda harus mampu bermimpi tentang sebuah rumah, dan pada akhirnya Anda harus menjadi seorang seniman. Anda harus kreatif. Anda harus menjadi cahaya wawasan dan imajinasi, yang tidak bisa diajarkan dalam buku, tidak bisa dipelajari, dan itulah ciri-ciri ilmuwan besar. Banyak ilmuwan bisa membangun fondasi dan ruangan, tapi untuk menjadi ilmuwan besar Anda harus menjadi seniman. Dan begitulah dulu Einstein. Tidak mungkinkah, sebagaimana spekulasi sains fiksi sekarang, bahwa hanya akan ada sangat sedikit planet di galaksi ketika sebuah peradaban mencapai titik evolusi yang sangat spesifik ini, dan bahwa ini sangat menarik peradaban tipe tiga sehingga bisa menjadi alasan mengapa mereka mempelajarinya atau mungkin – lagi-lagi hanya spekulasi – mendukungnya, mengadakan kontak dengannya, dan membantunya menghindari kesalahan besar berupa penghancuran diri sendiri.

MK: Itu mungkin saja. Film “2001”, sedikit banyak, didasarkan pada ide bahwa sebuah peradaban yang lebih maju, seperti tipe satu, akan sangat menarik. Dan itulah mengapa dalam film tersebut ada sebuah adegan di mana para astronot menyentuh obelisk, dan kemudian muncul bunyi. Ingat ada bunyi? Bunyi itu adalah pesan, suatu jam alarm yang mengatakan kami telah tiba. Hal ini selalu mungkin karena bahkan dalam film tersebut, mereka memiliki monolith yang muncul di depan kera-kera. MK: Anda tahu, kita sedang berspekulasi dan mencoba memperhitungkan kemungkinan dari pemahaman evolusi tipe nol kita sendiri, pemahaman hukum fisika; mereka mungkin saja ingin membantu kita sedikit, tapi menurut saya bahaya juga jika terlalu banyak teknologi mereka yang hadir di luar sana, itu akan melebihi daya serap kita. Maksud saya, lihat saja bom atom. Bom atom adalah konsekuensi dari perang tahun 1930-an. Tapi peradaban kita, bahkan hingga hari ini, tidak siap mengurus bom atom dan itulah mengapa kita punya masalah proliferasi nuklir. Pikirkan tentang bom atom yang kita ciptakan sendiri sebagai suatu teknologi dan memakan waktu lama dan sulit untuk mengontrolnya. Jika mereka ingin memberikan beberapa teknologi mereka kepada kita dalam skala besar, itu dapat benar-benar membawa pada penghancuran diri sendiri. Tapi tak berarti bahwa mereka tidak akan membantu kita atau mendirikan suatu pangkalan, membangun kontak dengan kita. Anda tahu, [mereka akan] sedikit bekerja dengan kita, dan saya pikir mereka tidak akan memberi kita keunggulan teknologi mereka, itu terlalu berbahaya. Kita masih memiliki pikiran buas. ST: Memang tidak. Secara biologis, kita masih berada di Zaman Batu dan kita adalah manusia gua.

MK: Jika Anda ambil contoh sekumpulan pekemah dan tiba-tiba mereka semua kehilangan kontak, karena ada badai salju, lalu mereka tersesat di hutan belantara, maka mereka akan segera kembali pada kebuasan yang sama seperti pada seratus ribuan tahun lalu, kembali pada struktur hirarkis yang sama. Segala hal yang kita tinggalkan seratus ribuan tahun lalu sebenarnya hanya tertinggal kemarin jika Anda tersesat di pegunungan dan memiliki cadangan makanan terbatas. Jadi, sekali lagi, bisa sangat berbahaya bagi tipe tiga untuk memberi kita manfaat teknologi mereka secara penuh, tapi tak ada alasan untuk tidak mengadakan kontak dengan kita, berinteraksi dengan kita; mungkin mereka memberi kita sesuatu, namun kemudian membiarkan kita sendirian, disebabkan fakta bahwa itu sangat berbahaya. PF: (Terkait burung tadi yang terbang di luar jendela) Apa yang akan dipikirkan seekor burung jika ia melihat enam orang sedang duduk di udara, mungkin [ia menganggap mereka] peradaban tipe lima atau…..

MK: …..Jika ada manusia sedang melayang di udara?

PF: Tentang burung tadi itu. Jika ia melihat kita.

MK: Apa yang ia lihat, begitu?

PF: Maka apa yang ia pikirkan?

MK: Burung yang besar. Benar tidak?

ST: (Tertawa) Tanpa sayap.

MK: Kalau mereka tipe min satu; “Oh, ini adalah peradaban tipe min satu!” Burungnya besar segalanya besar. Begitukah? Tidak. Bill Gates pernah menulis sebuah buku berjudul “The Road Ahead”. Dia mencoba memprediksi masa depan di tahun 1995, dan ternyata buku itu sepenuhnya salah. Dia mengatakan bahwa kita akan memiliki PC yang besar. PC di mana-mana. Di sini, di sana, benar (tertawa). Buku itu sepenuhnya salah! (Sekarang ada) internet, micro-miniaturization, dan di masa depan PC akan lenyap……

ST: Itu tahun 1995?

MK: Tahun 1995. The Road Ahead. Ditulis sebelum revolusi Internet benar-benar terjadi, dan dia berbicara tentang PC stand alone yang ada di mana-mana, PC super powerful. Itu bukan masa depan. Masa depan adalah ketika komputer lenyap di mana-mana, bukan begitu? Itulah mengapa meramalkan kemungkinan selalu berbahaya. MK: Contohnya cuaca – Chaos Theory ditemukan untuk membantu kita memahami cuaca dengan butterfly effect. Teori ini sangat bagus, tapi butterfly yang mana yang mempengaruhi cuaca, kapan butterfly mempengaruhi cuaca, benar kan? Teori ini tidak memiliki kemampuan meramal [cuaca].

ST: Tentu saja.

MK: Dalam beberapa hal, otak boleh jadi merupakan hasil dari kompleksitas. Jika Anda memperhatikan jumlah gen, hanya ada tiga puluh ribu gen yang menyusun manusia. Sementara ada ratusan miliar neuron (sel syaraf) dalam otak manusia. Ratusan miliar. Masing-masing neuron terhubung dengan puluhan ribu neuron lainnya. Jadi bagaimana tiga puluh ribu gen tersebut bisa meng-encode informasi dari ratusan ribu neuron, sementara masing-masing neuron terhubung dengan puluhan ribu neuron lainnya? Ini mustahil! Secara matematis, ini mustahil. Satu-satunya cara untuk melakukan itu adalah self-organization, yaitu masing-masing neuron memiliki semacam blueprint, kode-kode tertentu yang tumbuh dalam arah tertentu di mana kekuatan kimiawi tertentu lebih besar. Begitulah masing-masing neuron tumbuh, tapi pada dasarnya random. Kita tak lagi percaya pada pendekatan top down. Pendekatan kita sekarang adalah bottom up. Dimulai dengan sekumpulan neuron, menghubungkan mereka secara random lalu membiarkan mereka belajar seperti bayi. Program Mars didasarkan pada hal itu sekarang. Semua penjelajah Mars merupakan jaringan syaraf. Jadi telah ada revolusi dalam teori kecerdasan artifisial; bukan top down tapi bottom up. Maka ketika kita mengirim satelit ke luar angkasa, kita harus tahu bahwa satelit kita mungkin berlandaskan pada teknologi bottom up bukan top down.

ST: Pertanyaan pusaka terkait kompleksitas: bagaimana kalau kita mengubah sistem kompleks yang tidak kita pahami – seperti alam, ekosistem, sistem iklim…..

MK: Itu sangat berbahaya. Kita hidup dalam sebuah web (jaringan), bisa dikatakan demikian, dan jika Anda mengguncangkan jaringan, Anda kira hanya mata rantai berikutnya yang akan berubah, tapi tentu saja tidak. Itu mengubah seluruh mata rantai dalam rentetan itu, jadi cukup berbahaya jika kita bergantung kepada ekosistem kita dan banyak mengubah ekosistem kita. Contoh, lima jenis panen yang menghasilkan sebagian besar pangan manusia. Lima jenis panen, oke? Beras, gandum, dan semacamnya. Jagung. Lima jenis panen. Sangat berbahaya, karena jika kita duduk di puncak rantai makanan dan semua hama jagung atau hama gandum mempengaruhi produksi beras dan gandum dan jagung, miliaran manusia akan menderita kelaparan. Anda bisa mempengaruhi nasib bangsa-bangsa, jadi kita memang cukup bergantung kepada lingkungan kita, dan ia adalah lingkungan yang sangat terbatas. Lingkungan yang sangat terbatas – kita bergantung kepada sekumpulan binatang-binatang…..

ST: Kita yang telah menciptakan kondisi ini.

MK: Kita telah menciptakan suatu bubble (gelembung)! Gelembung di puncak rantai makanan. Dan tak perlu banyak hal untuk membuat kita keluar, karena kita hidup dalam bubble. Lima macam panen, serta binatang-binatang tempat kita bergantung. Lembu, domba, babi, ayam dan lima macam biji panen dasar. Ini sangat berbahaya. Dan, Anda tahu, 65 juta tahun yang lalu sebuah komet atau meteor menghantam Yucatan, Meksiko, dan kemungkinan itulah yang memusnahkan Dinosaurus. Dalam beberapa hal, kita adalah komet lain. Kita sekarang telah menghantam Bumi. Kita sekarang sedang menghancurkan kehidupan binatang pada skala yang tidak terlihat sejak 65 juta tahun lalu.

ST: Tapi jika kita tetap di planet ini untuk ribuan tahun atau sedikitnya ratusan tahun berikutnya, bukankah kita pasti berhenti berkembang?

MK: Tidak. Saya pikir yang akan terjadi adalah bahwa kelak akan ada beberapa kegoncangan besar sungguhan. Menurut saya, akan ada beberapa kegoncangan besar sungguhan.

ST: Dan kemudian perkembangan juga berhenti.

MK: Untuk sementara. Saya pikir akan ada kegoncangan. Kita akan segera kehabisan minyak, atmosfer sedang memanas dengan cepat. Kebanyakan manusia tidak melakukan apa-apa terkait hal ini karena mereka menyukai SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle/mobil sport-penj) mereka, mereka menyukai gaya hidup mereka, sementara Bumi sedang berubah dengan sangat cepat sekarang, dan setahu saya belum ada yang dilakukan terkait hal ini. Jadi saya kira manusia tidak akan melakukan apapun, sangat disayangkan, hingga ada kegoncangan besar. Begitulah manusia bergerak. Manusia tidak bergerak sampai mereka diharuskan bergerak. Kenyataannya, saya yakin evolusi lebih menyukai organisme seperti itu. Otak kita dibangun untuk tidak melakukan apapun sebelum ada ancaman mematikan terhadap kita. Jadi, menurut saya akan ada suatu ancaman mematikan. Saya kira itu akan terjadi tepat ketika muncul designer germ (kuman sintetis/buatan), barangkali ketika ada pelarian dari bom atom, ketika kutub es, kantong es di kutub, mulai mencari dan retak. Saya pikir itu akan membawa keadaan serius bagi banyak orang sehingga mereka terbangun. Yang sangat menyedihkan adalah bahwa mungkin di luar angkasa sana ada banyak tipe nol yang tidak pernah berhasil menjadi tipe satu. Mungkin ada banyak planet mati di mana bom atom telah padam. Atmosfer mereka adalah radioaktif. Atmosfer mereka sangat panas dan tak ada lagi kehidupan di sana. Tipe nol mungkin agak lazim. Tipe satu mungkin ganjil. Tipe nol agak lazim. Itu adalah pelajaran. Jika kita ingin menjadi tipe tiga, maka kita harus memastikan bahwa kita tidak akan menyerah.

ST: Jadi kita sama sekali tidak boleh arogan.

Maybe you’ve heard that expression, maybe not.  It’s usually attributed to the Rastafarians living in the hills of Jamaica.  It basically points to the belief that every word that comes out of our mouth has an effect– physical, emotional, and spiritual– whether our tone is light or serious… even if we think we’re just ‘fooling around’.  Sound can be so powerful that weapons have been developed that blast different frequencies at a person or crowd, creating feelings ranging from mild discomfort to excruciating pain.  And of course, you’ve probably heard of the ‘brown note‘ from South Park.  That’s the sound that makes you crap your pants.

Folks have been manipulating sound since folks have existed.  It even says in the Bible (if that’s your thing) “In the beginning was the Word”.   In that more spiritual sense, sound has been used in many different modalities, most notably,  healing.

This guy has some pretty interesting things to say.

On the other hand, the use of sound as a means of communication has extended into the stars.  Some scientists have been sending different sounds into space for decades, hoping to contact some sign of intelligent life.  Beyond that, a lot of folks in the electronic music scene would probably tell you, in a quiet moment, that the music they play in their heathen dance parties in the woods is actually a means of communicating with not only extra-terrestrials, but animals, faeries, nymphs, devas, and spirits of all kinds.  Who knows?

Neatly combining the topics of a number of my previous posts, namely the surveillance society, computer games, and Foucault, a new Internet ‘game’ is about to be launched that enables members of the public to win cash prizes by spotting criminals in ‘real-life’ video surveillance footage.

Although the United Kingdom has one of the highest proportion of video surveillance cameras in the world, the sheer amount of footage generated currently means that any criminals filmed are unlikely to be observed by any human camera operator, thereby escaping detection.

As described in Foucault’s book ‘Discipline and Punish’, this new scheme mirrors the design of Bentham’s ‘Panopticon’, a proposed prison in which inmates are potentially under constant observation, yet are unaware whether they are actually being observed at any particular moment. Consequently, those under surveillance must behave as if their every action is observed, thereby subjecting themselves to discipline instead of having it forced upon them, and so becoming the instruments of their own control.

The widespread connectivity provided by the Internet similarly enables numerous members of the public to co-operate in tackling somewhat more altruistic large-scale projects, exemplified by the collaboratively produced encyclopedia Wikipedia. Likewise, the open-source software movement is able to work together to develop free alternatives to commercial products, despite being geographically distributed. These include operating systems, office productivity suites, web-browsers, and for those of you currently involved in academic writing, reference managers.

This use of human ‘distributed processing’ mirrors the design of super-computers, in which a large number of relatively low-powered processors concurrently tackle small sub-parts of a much larger and more complex task. Once again, the Internet can be key in facilitating the necessary interconnections, as illustrated by the SETI@home project, where members of the public donate the spare computing power of their home PC to help the search for extra-terrestrial life.

I am in contact with beings from another world. They speak to me through my alphabet soup and alphabet cereal. Currently they are teaching me how to build fully functional magnetic propulsion system. So far it sounds surprisingly simple. I have to be careful though. The neighbor across the street is ex-CIA, I think. If I’m not careful he might report me to the government. I’m sure the government would confiscate everything. They might even interrogate and/or experiment on me. I’m really not cut out for that sort of thing. I would freak out and try to appeal to my persecutor’s humanity but it wouldn’t work because he will be a hardened professional.

My room has padded walls… This is because I like to be free to move around all crazy when I get excited. It is not because I am crazy and live in an asylum. If you tell anyone that I’m crazy my alien friends will prank you. They do some really good pranks. They once did this thing to a guy where they had all of his best friends go to his house and throw him a surprise party in bed and they were all giving him awesome presents like wii games and ice cream, but then they pulled off their faces and it turned out that they weren’t his best friends they were my best friends (the aliens) and the guy wasn’t in a bed, he was on a lab table. So needless to say they totally freaked him out. The worst part is they didn’t even let him keep any of the awesome presents. They just dropped him off naked somewhere and told him to enjoy being told that he is crazy.

So anyway, I can talk to aliens who are badass and I’m going to win the nobel prize just like Obama and Gore and everyone will love me. And, I’m completely sane and not at all crazy.

If you read my sarcastic entry on NASA’s bombing the moon, you’ll get to ask–why criticize something humans consider monumental? Frankly, what’s so monumental or even exciting about finding water on the moon where we have billions or even trillions of tons of water here? The US Geologic Survey says there is roughly 326 million cubic miles of water covering 72 percent of the earth. Quite a lot, not to mention that there is more water underground also.

So, was that US$ 79 million spent for bombing the moon’s surface with a Centaur rocket nothing but lunar air? No. There is still some use for that, maybe in the future.

What I am more concerned is how we use science or our scientific knowledge about the universe. Why are we so fascinated with what’s happening “up there”, when there are more exciting things happening “down here.” I mean, solving global warming and creating devices to control those strong storms are, for me, worth every cent than blasting the lunar surface looking for water.

Is there not enough data to solve nature’s mysteries here that we need to look elsewhere for answers?

There are still so many things left to discover on earth, but we put greater emphasis on space exploration and worst, using monies supposed to benefit the people?

During the Cold War, space exploration was all about breast-beating and competition. The space race was about fuelling egos. Now that we’re all living in a globalized world, science should at least serve the needs and concerns of people down here. We have tons of problems to solve here that science would surely be a very good tool to use.

Blasting a spot on the moon, great! Or maybe, we are just being fooled by NASA?

That this experiment of sending a rocket in outer space has military uses which they are wont to tell us? That this is not in the name of astronomy or terraforming; rather knowledge on how we can wage a war against fellow humans or war against extraterrestials?

It takes about 80,000 years to reach the Alpha Centauri Star System with only conventional thrust. If they have found ways to go faster they haven’t told us.

My name is Ged and I am a member of the 16,000th generation of passengers aboard the Centauri Peonix. We count generations in increments of 50 years. Our history is some 20 times what earth’s history was when we first embarked. We will reach Alpha Centauri in my lifetime.

Our journey began in 2075 with one of our ancestors Sasha Telerov. He was part of mission control for the Mars missions during the 2050’s. This was the first major breakthrough in space exploration since microbes were discovered on Ceres and Vesta. He used the renewed appreciation for space exploration from the Mars Missions and the knowledge that life existed outside of earth to build momentum for the first colony ship. While nobody felt truly comfortable sending people on a voyage from earth that would take 80,000 years to complete, waiting 80,000 years for a probe to demonstrate the viability of the Alpha Centauri system was equally intolerable. If humanity was to make the leap into space it needed to happen when people were ready not when technology made it convenient. There was certainly no shortage of eager colonists. Sasha Telerov assured his critics that even if colonization of a planet in one of the nearest star system didn’t work out colonizing space would still be an important step in human progress.

In any case the volunteers were present and the funding was raised. In the end ethical concerns were drowned out by the roaring cascade of currency. Over the next decade the ship was constructed in orbit around the moon using materials mined from earth, mined from the moon, and mined from the asteroid belt. The ship’s official name may have been the Centauri Pheonix, but everyone lovingly called it the city in the stars.

Sasha Telerov sadly did not get to see the edge of the solar system. He died just after passing Satern. His body was left in orbit around Europa. Perhaps some day creatures will make there way up onto the surface of this moon to see the glimmer of Sasha Telerov’s coffin floating silently above.

The city in the stars is home to about 50,000 people. Not much compared to a normal city perhaps, but quite a lot of people to have living in single building. Of course by now far larger colony ships have been constructed. Our’s is small because it was first. We often remind ourselves that we were first whenever we find ourselves comparing our city in the stars to other colony ships. Afterall, about 80,000 years have past since we left Earth. Other ships are bound to be far more advanced than our own. We’re probably better off not thinking about that though. I think that perhaps the people back on Earth feel that way too. It seems we learn about technological advancements decades after they occur, and not just because it takes 5 years for information to reach us from Earth.

They say people on Earth live a lot longer now, what with made to order organs and advanced regenerative medicine. Some even live forever by downloading their brains into digital forms. We just don’t have the resource to make a lot of new technology. Besides, a few millennia ago, I don’t know how many exactly, we lost a lot of things. They say we used to have a quantum computer on board and that it was entangled with a computer back on earth. They say we used to be able to access the Earth networks in real time all across the ship. Now we only get occasional packages in the form of light pulses ever few months.

Most of the time here it is peaceful, otherwise we wouldn’t have made it this far. But ever so often bad things have happened. There are a lot of sections in the history logs that seem to have gaps in them.

Because resources have to be managed carefully only one child can be born per person per lifetime. As such everyone is sterilized after puberty. At this time gametes are stored for the production of children. During puberty safe methods for exploring sexuality are presented to everyone. Every few years there are a couple people who break the rules. The punishments for pregnancy are very harsh. Those who have been reprimanded rarely ever smile for the rest of their lives. Everyone understands the importance of managing reproductive cycles but many feel very uncomfortable with the treatment of natural parents. I am one of only 10 people in the colony who were born live. I don’t live with my birth parents but I think I know who they are. I think they aren’t allowed to talk to me. Anyway, I know who they other natural born people are because we all have belly buttons and the other kids made fun of us when we were in school. I’m the second youngest of all of us. The oldest is about 120. She is probably going to die soon but she really wants to make it to Alpha Centauri. She says that on Earth they could just freeze her to keep her alive for a little longer but the colony doesn’t do that because there isn’t enough storage space and it wouldn’t be fair to freeze some people but not others. I hope she makes it.

Apart from being made fun of, I really like school. I’m a very good student. I really like philosophical history. I get in arguments with Prof. Caleb about certain periods though. He doesn’t think that the big brother era on board was such a bad thing, but I just wouldn’t be able to handle being watched and wired all the time. The one thing I tend to agree with him on is the ethics of violence. The only time when violence is justified is when it is in self-defense. Even the the colony has been under dictatorship things have worked out better when he has been removed by social forces or natural death rather than revolution. In that sense it is probably good that nobody lives forever within the colony.

The period in history that I like best is the happiness period. Everyone on board had been very depressed for centuries, nobody seems to no exactly why. I think it was probably around the time when the quantum computer was destroyed. So a person named Lani got a whole bunch of people together to find new meaning. They all talked for several months making lists of things that seemed important and why. They also did extensive research into the old psychological studies on human behavior and happiness and stuff. Then they did a number of surveys with everybody about what they liked and disliked about the colony and about what heir interest were and stuff. So then they mobilized everyone into doing different projects. Most of the murals and recreational operating systems that we have on board were created during this period. It was actually a very long period in history. The only other period that is this long is the big brother period which came later. The big brother period came after the ban on natural birth was lifted and a religious group gained popularity. The birth rate rose too high, resources became scarce, then the only way to save the majority was to do something with the group responsible. Once the crisis was over everyone wanted to ensure nothing like that ever happened again.

We say that we are in the productive period now. Everyone is spending a lot more time in education than we used to because we want to make sure we are in the best possible condition for colonizing a planet when we make it into the heart of the system. Most of us are also working on projects that prepare for specific scenarios that we might encounter.

We collectively have been waiting a very long time for this impending moment. The chance to start a new world. It feels like we can do anything.

“Alright class. Today I thought that it would be worthwhile to have to have some discourse instead of following the syllabus as usual.” Prof. Tyse is an interesting person. She always seems to be far more awake than anyone else. They say she prepares her meals at home from raw ingredients instead of ordering her food like most people and that this has altered her brain so that she can go for days without sleep. This is her literature course.

Bec raises a thin finger to her cringed forehead as she interjects. “Are you allowed to do that?”

“No, I’m not, but if anything happens to me it would seem that the big brother era never came to an end after all, and that would be a far more useful lesson than anything else. I think it would be nice to talk about starting a new world though, don’t you? I’m sure you don’t want us adults deciding everything for you? It’ll be your world after all.” Prof Tyse’s eyes smile behind the round spectacles that sit upon her pointed nose. Her hair is red and she has sad eyebrows. Only two or three dozen people on the ship wear glasses. Most have laser eye surgery.

“I’m sure everything has been planned adequately over the last 80,000 years. We should have faith in the institution.”

“Faith?” Larle interjects. Her hair is big and dark as are her eyebrows as is her voice. “I think we all know where faith gets us, into the airlock without a suit. The only way we can be sure of anything is to test everything and see what fits together. Accepting anything as fact without checking it to the best of our ability makes us vulnerable to mistakes and to vulnerable to others’.”

Before I can stop myself a excitedly spout out that’s coherentism with my geekiest voice inflection. Larle smiles at me from the side of her face holding back a snicker.

Bec doesn’t look very happy.

“It seems like the discussion has already started. So what I would like to do is try to put together your ideas about what the guidelines, laws, or institutional structures on a new world should look like. Let’s maybe start with what some of the problems have historically been back on Earth with governments, economies, etc. If anyone has any notes from old social theory courses those could be useful too.

I’ve remained pretty close with everyone who was in that class with me. I think we tend to have a hard time getting comfortable around other people in physical spaces unless something forces us to work together on something we can all really invest in. Otherwise we just meet and interact with each other through the nets. It’s easier to interact through the nets  because that certain degree of detachment or anonymity help free us from social awkwardness. I think in person we are all always a little autistic at times. In any case it is nice every once and a while to feel comfortable around someone without an avatar.

During the virtual period on board direct human contact wasn’t allowed unless absolutely necessary. Everything including classes was done through the net. Only children who were still developing were allowed to be in physical proximity to other people. We don’t develop properly if we live on the nets from birth. The history logs don’t say but I have a feeling that we were still directly connected to Earth back then. People probably still had normal jobs back on Earth through the nets and stuff. I’ve never done it but I know that it is really easy for a person to remote control a robot body through the nets. People would probably have been paid through recreational downloads. These days people have to do whatever job they are best suited for. Most people don’t need to be paid, but if people refuse to work they have one of their recreational programs with held or something like that. I don’t know that much about it just that it is something where the rules seem to shift every decade or so. I hear there are a few people with really important jobs who get paid somehow. I don’t know how exactly. Maybe with something physical that is actually scarce like fine cheese or something. Because we have freedom of information now, it is hard to keep people from having access to anything on the nets unless they have done something wrong.

We have gotten close enough to the star system to see Alpha Centauri A and B really clearly. We should be at the most likely candidate in the system for colonization in less than 10 years. I’ll be 30 then. I can see Proxima Centauri from my room. It is too far away to see any detail though. The distance from Proxima to the other two stars is about 7% of the distance from A and B to Earth. That’s about 10,00 or so years out for us. Proxima is leaving the star system now. I guess they’ll have to change its name. We might be changing the name of the other two stars as well now that they will become our suns.

As expected Deinos looks very promising. We are sending down a probe today. The oldest of the natural born died yesterday. She was able to see our new home before she died. Perhaps she will be buried there. Everyone is very excited. Hopefully there won’t be any terraformation needed. Of course if there isn’t, that also means things already live there.

In about an hour the probe is on the planet surface. Everyone patches in to watch through the ships nets. We already know that Deinos is larger than earth and that it has about half as much water. The probe confirms that the atmosphere contains oxygen. However the atmosphere is also full of gasses that are poisonous to humans so at the very least we know we will have to wear masks. Of course we would need to do that anyway to protect against whatever microbes or spores may be in the air. We will probably need to wear full suits until we can create a few safe bio zones for ourselves and fully immunize which could take decades. The probe analyzes a soil sample. There are indeed microbes in the soil. We can see them. It seems like some of them might have some sort of chloroplasts. That’s a good sign. We may be able to grow food at some point. So far so good. I can hear people screaming in excitement down the hall from me. The entire residential sector seems to be a big party right now. The probe is now moving toward an area suspected to be forest. We tried to observe it from the ships telescope but the area was to cloudy. What seems to be a line of giant umbrellas begins to fill the frame as the probe gets closer. Upon closer inspection these trees seem similar to ferns or palm trees. As there is less water on the planet this makes sense. It seems strange that the trunks should be so tall when competing vegetation is not present. The only other plant seems to be a sort of moss that carpets the ground. The reason for the hight of the trees approaches. A massive black creature approaches the probe. It looks like an elephant crossed with a giraffe. It has a long neck and a head with pointed ears. Attached to the head is a long trunk. Either it doesn’t have eyes or they are too dark to see against the creature’s black body. The creature begins to inspect the probe with its long trunk. Unlike an elephant’s trunk this creature’s entire mouth seems to be at the end, teeth and all. After a few minutes the creature loses interest and moves on. The probe ventures deep into the forest. Little new life seems to show itself until a strange mound of reddish dirt is discovered. It is apparent that something lives here. Whether large ants or rodents of some kind there is no way to tell. There are footprints, but these could be attached to any type of body imaginable. It is almost night on the planets surface. The probe finds shelter and goes dormant.

I’m woken up by Larle. She tells me she needs to talk to me. I am mortified, but I oblige. On my way I wonder why she doesn’t just use the nets. Larle seems distressed.

Larle yanks me into her room and shoves me against her wall. She has tin foil on her head and her eyes are wide and scary. “Ged. Can I trust you? Before I say anything, I need to know that I can trust you.”

“You can trust me.” I can feel confusion creeping across my face.

“You haven’t been to hospital before right? You don’t have any implants or anything? All natural?”

“As far as I know. Why?”

“There’s something strange going on Ged. I’ve been following this trail for awhile, right? I think it has something to do with implants that they can only put in you while your being grown, or with breeding or something. I’ve hacked into the control center system.”

“You what!?”

“Just hear me out, okay? There are things they aren’t telling us. Gaps in history and stuff. I think there is something about the system that they aren’t telling us. Look, don’t you ever wonder why the big brother era came to an end?”

“Yeah, I have.” I finally feel comfortable enough to sit down.

“They say it got phased out as people began to feel safer and as they began to care more about being informed. I think the people who were in charge just allowed people to think that they had given up that stuff. I think they started to put devices in people while they were still developing into babies. Maybe they did other things to. I’m not sure that before the big brother era children were raised the way they are now. I think they’ve really been messing with us. I’ve done an X-ray of myself. Ged… There’s something in my head. That’s why I have this on my head. I’m running electricity through it so they won’t be able to read my thoughts or anything. Do you believe me Ged? Or do you think I’m crazy?”

“I think Everything you’ve said is definitely feasible.” I want to believe her but what she’s saying is pretty out there, not impossible, but…

“Ged. There are others out there. I’ve seen it on the ships sensors. Someone’s coming Ged.

The search is halted the next day. An alien ship has approached us. It seems that this system may already be inhabited by intelligent life. I suddenly find it hard to breath. If Larle was right about this, what other secrets might the people in charge be hiding. I feel an urge to swallow but can’t make my body do so. This is only the third time, at least officially, that humans have made contact with other beings like ourselves. So far interactions have been cordial. The others always seemed to have some sort of distaste or maybe pity for us. In any case, as far as I know none have ever been willing to share technology with us. The alien ship isn’t sleek. It is relatively skeletal. These one’s seem new.

Several days later we have established rudimentary communication with the others. We have told them that we are colonists. They have told us that they live in the ocean of this world. It seems that they aren’t even as technologically developed as we were when the city in the sky left Earth. They do not feel comfortable having us share a planet with them but understand that we have come a very long way. They will help us negotiate with their leaders. If they do not accept us our alternative will be to move on to the only other planet in the system that may be able to support life. It is not an ideal location and will almost certainly require years of terra-forming, perhaps centuries worth.

We have shared this planet with the Gelion for three years, Deinos years in relation to Alpha Centauri A. We have already managed to physically adapt to the environment. We can breath the air here without aid, eat some of the food, and walk the planet’s surface with natural gait even though we have only been walking with a magnitude of gravity equivalent to that on Earth for the better part of our lives. The Gelion are interesting creatures. They are telepathic, though they say our minds are to strange for them to understand. They seem to have taken a very different evolutionary course to our own, apart from simply having evolved in the ocean. They are far more cooperative creatures than we are and do not know how to lie. There life cycles are also very different from our own. They do not have two sexes in the same sense that we do. They have a male sex for the first segment of their lives then a female segment in the later part of their lives. They also have a certain percentage of the population that is very specialized. For example some Gelion do not seem to be conscious. They serve as the archives of information and networking hubs for the Gelion. In fact the Gelion, as telepaths, do not use any written or spoken language at all.

We have traded some technology with Gelion. They have shown us how to use water as a catalyst for fusion. They’re also very good at making powerful lenses out of water. We have shown them how to build and use basic computers. We also put on some fireworks for them. We hope to construct embassies for each other over the next couple years. I feel pretty great about our future here. Lately, Larle and I have enjoyed watching the dual sunset in evenings. It is so strange to be living on the surface of a planet after an entire life in space. It is so strange that their even are planets. Balls of rock in an endless void. It is strange that their should be anything at all.

Something very strange is happening this morning. There are people walking around that I have never seen before, human people. They wear funny clothes and have bizarre accents, like the ones in really old movies… Larle.

As I expect she is in her room looking jolly.

“What did you do?”

“I just let them out. You know all of those bourgeois brassturds were planning on using us like slaves. They already have been. Here all these years we’ve been told that nobody could be frozen if they were about to die because there wasn’t enough space to store 80,000 years worth of bodies and it wouldn’t be fair to allow only a few people to be preserved. All this time these rich people from earth have been our cargo all this time. They were hoping that they could hitch a ride with us, let us build a civilization here, develop the technology to cure them of whatever terminal illnesses they have, then help them to live forever while in the meantime the rest of us all die in turn up until that point. Well, if I can’t afford to live forever neither can they. They should just die happy that they had the opportunity to see two entirely different star systems from a planet surface while most of us died without being able to see any.”

I wonder silently if making rich people suffer the same fate as poor people counts as violence. Surely they don’t deserve to live forever anymore than the rest of us, but does that mean that they don’t deserve at all to live forever. Those of us who have lived on the city in the sky our entire lives our used to life without money and without scarcity. Will future generations return to the old ways? To old class systems?

The captain of the colony arrives. It seems Larle wasn’t as careful about erasing her hacking trail as she usually is.

“How did you find me? Did you use the nets? Or did you decide to tap directly into my brain using my chip.”

The captain turns to his first officer. “Bec, what is she talking about? Was she given an implant without consent?”

Bec looks to the left. “I thought you knew.”

The captain waits.

“Everyone who is eligible, that is everyone except for the natural born have them, sir. I don’t know why. Only a few people know about it. It has been done for centuries, at least.”

The captain turns to Larle. “I’m not finished with you. I’m going to talk to the medical staff.”

It turns out that nobody knows what the chips are for. However, that isn’t the only thing that was done to people without consent. Over thousands of years we have all been apart of a Eugenics program. We have been selected to be intelligent, resilient, and unreligious. I can’t say that I think we are worse off because of this, but I also think that this is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. I’ll make sure that the Eugenics movement makes it into the philosophical history logs. As for the chips, I suspect that they are related to Gelion somehow. Perhaps to help us communicate or vise versa, to keep them out of our minds. I’m not sure. Also, they let Larle off the hook. Nobody really cares what special treatment a bunch of supposedly rich people are supposed to get. Still, I don’t know if I totally agree with Larle’s decision to take them out of the freezer. These rich brassturds probably funded everything just so that they would have the chance to live a long life in a distant place. We don’t have the ability to refreeze them.

“I was on salvage duty today and I came across something strange. Check it out, Larle. Any idea what this is?”

“It looks like computer chip. This should be about the size of the implants. Where there more of these?”

Larle spends the next several months analyzing brain implants. She reaches a disturbing conclusion. The chips take in sensory information from the brain then transmit it. It seems that these chips have been responsible for many of the most volatile periods in our history. Before the quantum computer which was entangled with earth’s nets was destroyed. These chips could have been used to control people, perhaps from birth. It is also possible that some people responded poorly to being meddled with and found a religious explanation for anything that happened to them while blacked out or possessed or whatever may have been done to them. The worst part of course was that there were people within the colony who must have known at least some of what the chips could be used for who implanted them anyway and ensured that multiple generations would continue to do so. Our people, these poor colonists are broken hearted. Looking into their eyes I can see bottomless sadness and debilitating hatred. Are there still people back on Earth living vicariously through these colonists. In a little over 5 years time, will they experience this awakening. Will they feel dirtied as these people feel. What does the offender feel as he looks out from the teary gaze of the violated? Was it a person from earth controlling the body of a colonist and ravaged by guilt and self-hatred who set us on a path to freedom by destroying our quantum connection to the nets of Earth? I hope somehow this moment of searing pain will somehow heal the human organism. How do the Gelian, as telepaths, live? Are they always in the minds of another? Do they know intrusion as we do? Some of the people who know I am natural born turn against me. Why was I spared?

At this point we come to an ethical nexus. As a people to we choose to start an inquisition in order to weed out those of us who unforgivably intruded upon the privacy of others, or do we let these crimes go unpunished? I’ll be sure that whatever we choose to do will be carefully recorded in the philosophical history logs. Lastly, how and why did all of this come about? It still seems that something has yet to come to light.

I can’t help but feel sorry for all of the confused and dying rich people wandering around. It is strange to think that they are all over 80,000 years old. The history books from their childhood only went back 5000 years or so before their lifetime. I decide to approach one of them. I would like to record some of these people’s memories on a disk before they die, philosophical history is still my favorite subject. The man tells me that his name is Sasha Telerov. He has quite a story to tell me. It is a story about implants as insurance that we colonists not turn against our Earthbound ancestors. It is a story about sleeper agents from Earth having the potential ability to invade the bodies and minds of colonists. It is a story about class and power. Sasha’s tale blackens the golden image of himself that has been carved into philosophical history logs. It seems our noble journey has been rotted to the core from the outset. For 80,000 years we have been plagued by the savage heart of man.

I wonder, here on this new world, Deinos, will we finally be free from our savage past? Or will we pollute even the green oceans of our aquatic cousins with greed, fraud, and fear?

Tonight as Larle and I sit on the rocks by calm waters, the dual sunset seems vastly melancholy and exceeding beautiful.

Ada wrote a lovely MfM today on the topic of Seasons. I didn’t feel comfortable writing the introduction to such a warm piece so I asked her what to say. She told me:

Just say: “I wrote this in memory of my husband of almost eleven years, who died at age 40.”

So many seasons with him. Seasons of courtship in the fall – helping him buy his first winter coat, gloves, boots, and scarf. Knitting him another scarf for Christmas.

At the same time, learning each others’ bodies. When I took his virginity, I wouldn’t tie him up. I thought that would be bad symbolism for our partnership. But he was tied up when he proposed and I said “Yes”.

Then our first spring, when I moved in with him. He said he would try to take my birthday off work. Then he said he hadn’t been able to do so, but on my birthday he surprised me with a trip to an amusement park – because he’d gotten the day off all along.

In the summer, I got a job to pay for our wedding expenses. Everyone knew my parents wouldn’t be able to pay for it.

Then came fall again, and we were married one year after our first phone call. We went to New Orleans for the honeymoon, and he took me to the space museum in Huntsville, Alabama on the way home.

There are other seasons in my tale, seasons of illness and moving, children and, but I shall save them for another day.

I couldn’t think of anything to write for this weeks topic, I’m trying to get back to being a university student and such. Work is light so far but I’m still worried about not getting things done and I think that is throwing me off a little. What a horrible night to have a curse… or to draw any stick figures. I’m sure after learning of this strange phenomenon, you’ll think twice about playing hangman, or really anything of the sort. Oh! Speaking of curses, on an unrelated note, I would like to have a rather large story/article/entry/what have you in the coming weeks regarding local and well-known curses, and the mythology surrounding them. This summer’s end/autumn’s start, for some strange reason, has encouraged me to dig up good and intriguing info/legends about that sort of thing. Still, I digress… have you ever heard of something known as a Black Stick Man, or Black Stick Men if with company? I had not until just recently stumbling across a few (and I do mean a few, a very few… almost not enough to be substantially believable) frightening experiences surrounding this incredibly bizarre figure. I suppose that this Black Stick Man is just as his name implies… an almost two-dimensional, black-lined, round headed… well, moving stick-man. But mind you, not so much a  well-meaning  stick-man. Based on reports, it seems to differ from what may first come to mind, which is shadow people (a totally seperate and nigh-stranger phenomenon). I’d almost venture to say that it may be something extra-terrestrial, or extra-dimensional… as opposed to something more of a ghost.

I had first found out about them on a top-ten list of strange things. If you’d rather not skip through the list to spot #3, where the Black Stick Man resides, here is the text description listed:

“The black stick man is another entity encountered in modern times. Not to be confused with the shadow man, incredibly he is even stranger. Stick men are supposed to look like totally black, thin, stick figure drawings, such as teachers would make in kindergarten. They have been reported as between average height to impossibly tall. Their heads are just a black circle with no facial features being discernible. They are totally two dimensional, without any depth. Usually they’ve been sighted walking along roads at night, or at transitional times such as twilight or just before dawn. Bizarrely, some have reported them wearing what appears to be a top hat. Their walk is described as a weird “lolloping” gait. They are surprised when actually seen, and have followed unfortunate witnesses on occasion. Their pace remains leisurely as they approach. Obviously to be pursued by such an otherworldly creature would be anything but pleasant, and those who have encountered them have been understandably terrified. So far however, apart from being bizarrely frightening, they have done no physical harm, and ultimately just disappear.”

However, the best story thusfar that I had read about this strange stick man/alienesque creature can be found here. The author sounds pretty sincere with his experience in London.

After reading this description, I was immidiately recalling a video I had seen a few months back… you can watch it here. Doesn’t it conjure images of The Blair Witch Project? It very well could be a stump… and for the sake of this entry on The Dark Shelf, I probably wouldn’t call this video’s subject a “Black Stick Man”… but it might be close. Besides, what type of entry would this be without leaving you, reader, with some sort of image to haunt you… or annoy you?

Abyss, The (1989)

James Cameron (“The Terminator,” “Aliens,” “Titanic”) directed this deep sea adventure which stars Ed Harris as the leader of a team of divers hired for a rescue mission after a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks. His ice queen of a wife (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) who he does not get along with comes along and a lot of tension brews between them. The divers are aided by the Navy led by Michael Biehn but we later discover that he is not emotionally, psychologically, and physically equipped enough to handle the pressure (pun intended) of staying underwater for an extended period of time. This film surprised me because I did not think it would be as emotional as it was. I thought what was going to happen was the divers would find the submarine, encounter some aliens and head back home. I did not think that it was going to be a story of survival, clashing against differing positions of power, dealing with fear and paranoia, and pushing an extraterrestrial agenda. The underwater scenes were nothing short of amazing. I really felt like I was deep sea diving with the characters because all I could see were giant rocks, endless darkness, and blue light coming from their mode of transports. It reminded me of scenes from a fascinating documentary (also directed by Cameron) called “Aliens of the Deep.” I also liked the fact that the alien angle of the story was minimized up until the very end. The tension rises after each scene due to human errors and vulnerabilities so I had no trouble buying into everything that was happening. When Biehn’s character finally lost it, I was scared for all of the characters that he considered his enemy because he knew how to kill and do it efficiently. Although the film could have been shorter, in some ways it worked to its advantage because we really get to feel how it was like to be stuck underwater for almost three hours. Two stand out scenes for me were the resuscitation and the falling into the abyss scenes. I felt a whole range of emotions during those scenes and even I had to tear up a bit because I had no idea how it was all going to turn out. In many ways, it had the drama of “Titanic” and the horror of “The Thing.” There’s a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche (or some version of it) in the beginning of the film that perfectly summed up the experience. That is, “If you look into the abyss, the abyss will look into you.”

Life, as it is the most beautiful creation of the universe. If we compress the life of the universe to a year worth of time period, life on earth would constitue an hour.This is how short our stay in the universe has been. And considering this fact, it is very possible that there could be civilizations out there who have been flourishing millions of years before us and would have had the capability to civilize the whole galaxy by now.But the fact that we have not found them,rather they have not found us yet makes me doubt their existence.

Firstly,it is very possible that life might exist on other planets but it might no be intelligent life that can communicate.On the other hand, it is also very possible that intelligent life capable of communicating exists but with hundreds of billions of stars to look into, they have not been able to reach us.I fail to believe on the concept that they have been visiting us but have been hiding.I fail to understand that a highly advanced civilization has been in contact with our planet,has been observing us but is hiding and doing it all. For such an advanced civilization that can reach us, with immense knowledge and intelligence , I would not expect them to be foolish or come with a bad motive when they there are millions of other planets. No one would want to conquer anything when plenty turns out of be to small a world to explain the vastness of the universe.
I believe there are hundreds of civilizations out there who just have not made it. But someday they will contact us, they will find us.The Earth is just one of millions of other planets which can support life and we are not that special to be the only carriers of intelligence and life in this extreme vastness of space.For that to happen we should have been granted much more intelligence to sustain ourselves for we are so special and not destroy our planet at the rate we are doing right now.

To sum it all up,I strongly believe there have to be many civilizations out there who just have not reached us, but someday they might just pop up!!

I wake abruptly. It seems only moments ago that I was drifting off to sleep, but wherever I am now, it’s not my bed. Instead, I’m lying on a hard surface, and some kind of large creature has me pinned with a few of its many tentacles. It looks like a cross between an octopus, Cthulhu, and the worst hentai monster ever.
