Today was the day I’ve been waiting all Spring and Summer for. Extraction day.

The time when I finally get to break out my shiny, new, not to mention expensive, honey extractor. Break out the ol’ smoker, hive tool and bee suit, and go to working getting the one super that was full in to my makeshift honey house, in my parents kitchen. For any seasoned beekeepers who might be reading this, you can only be familiar with the giddy, child-like excitement that has been building up within me steadily until this day.

Here is a nice picture taken by one of my beekeeping team members–aka my younger brother:

My hive waiting to be harvested

For those of you that don’t know the process of harvesting honey, allow me to further explain.

Since this was my first year keeping bees I had to start from the ground up. I had to get a complete hive, the smoker/hivetool/veil, and Pierco plastic frames and foundation. I needed to find the perfect spot for the hive. A location facing the southern morning sun to wake the girls up early, a spot with a wind break so then can exit the hive on breezy days, a near by water source, and a readily available supply of flowering plants. With these elements, and a few more, my bees had what they needed to begin their task of drawing out comb on the new frames.

My bees use an old table cloth to drink left over rain water from

After all Spring and Summer of collecting pollen, nectar, and propolis, it was time to harvest what me and my girls worked so hard on. Like I said before, like a giddy child I awoke yesterday morning as if it were Christmas morning and began the labor of love of getting all my gear together. A few last minute reading sessions from Beekeeping for Dummies and a few informational beekeeping blogs and I was off!

Here is a quick little guide on how I got ready and how I got my super off and took it to the house to be extracted.

First I got my smoker ready:

Getting some fuel for my smoker

Stuffing my smoker full of pine needles and leaves with my hive-tool

I loaded up my smoker with some good fuel. They say that properly lighting up a smoker with fuel and making it last long enough to inspect all of your hives is one of the hardest parts to being a beekeeper. And I can certainly vouch for that, lighting this one up took me about seven matches before I ran out then used a lighter.

Off camera I was cursing up a storm and sweating over this little oven.

When I finally did get my smoker lit, it was time to head over to the hive and let the guard bees know that I was about to come in for a little visit.

I smoked the hive like you would for any other normal inspection. I blew a large cloud of smoke at the side of the entrance

A puff of smoke a day keeps the guard bees stings at bay

and I carefully opened up the telescoping outer cover, and smoked those guard bees too. Can’t forget them.

Then I proceeded to take what was mine. The beautifully capped honey super.

A nearly empty honey super

Next I took off the outer hive cover and gently tossed it on the grass beside my hive, metal side down, facing up. There usually are some guard bees under there and you want to avoid just throwing it on the ground because they WILL consider that offensive. Believe me. Next I cracked open the inner cover and gave the girls in there a little puff from my smoker. Once open the senses begin to become overwhelmed with all things of the hive. The earthy, sweet smell of the wax and honey mix. The sound of the entire hive rapidity buzzing their wings to rid the hive of smoke, almost as if they are all saying “hello” to me all at once.

The next step was to take the hive tool and pry the super from the triangulated bee escape board. I made sure not to make any loud cracks or quick, abrupt movements, lest I wanted to have some angry bees flying around my face.

I took the super off the escape board and set it on top of the up-side down outer cover like so:

Resting the super on top of the outer cover like this keeps leaves, dirt, grass, and ants from getting into the comb

Upon getting it away from the some 40,000 honey bees below the escape board, I was dying to see what I had been waiting for all summer. So I pulled a frame out, and beheld its inherent beauty:

This frame is about 85%-90% full of honey

Next I was tasked with getting the remaining bees that had their little heads stuck in some of the empty cells. So I used some of the closely available weeds, I ripped them out and used them as a brush to sweep them off the frames and took my bounty into the kitchen.

Brushing off the bees with grass is said to not anger them as much as using a bee brush made of synthetic fibers

Once inside I could set out on my final learning quest of the day: extracting the honey and the wax.

I set about getting my uncapping knife and uncapping tank together:

This uncapping knife is that of the cold variety. It subsitutes heat for just plain sharpness.

This uncapping tank is where the cutting action of the uncapping knife takes place. The frame is rested on the wooden dow that is laying across the tank. The cut wax falls into the tanks and then the frame is ready for extracting

Aside from the actual extracting (my phone died whilst trying to get a picture of event), that was how I went about my first honey harvest!

The harvest of ‘09 should be a good one. I took a look at the honey when it was straining. It has a light amber color and is just the right sweetness. So far its hard to tell how much I got, when the stat bee inspector showed up last weekend, he said that I’d probably get a good 20 pounds out of it. Although after seeing the frames up close I don’t think I’ll get nearly that much. Either way I’m happy and real excited because normally first year beekeepers don’t make any honey because the bees are busy drawing out comb on all their frames. Tomorrow I’ll be bottling up the honey I do have and taking orders for sales, as well as mixing up a 2:1 sugar solution that will be used in feeding them.

I have to thank you all for following this epic journey of mine. Any questions and comments leave ‘em below. If you are interesting in honey or wax, of which I only have a limited amount, contact me and we’ll work something out.

Peace.Out.

While writing a new web service resource today I had the chance to use some pretty awesome parts of

While writing a new web service resource today I had the chance to use some pretty awesome parts of Scala, and wanted to share some of them. We integrate with Twitter and have a POJO like this TwitterUser class:

package com.pongr.twitter;

public class TwitterUser
{
    private String name;

    public TwitterUser()
    {
        this(null);
    }

    public TwitterUser(String name)
    {
        setName(name);
    }

    public String getName()
    {
        return name;
    }

    public void setName(String name)
    {
        this.name = name;
    }
}

It’s been stripped down to only the relevant property, in this case the user’s full name that they specified on their Twitter account. This new resource sends back various information about a user to our mobile apps, including their Twitter info. Since I wrote this new resource in Scala I decided to “scalafy” (scalify?) the TwitterUser class a bit.

First off, one of our users may not have linked to their Twitter account, so the TwitterUser object might be null. And even if they have, the name we get back from the Twitter API will be null if they haven’t entered a name, or may just be a duplicate of their screen name (like @zcox). We need to split up the name into valid first and last names, so this seemed like a good place to be using an Option[String] instead of just a String, which is a best practice from the Beginning Scala book. So the TwitterInfo class ended up looking like this:

package com.pongr.twitter

class TwitterInfo(user: Option[TwitterUser]) {
  val NameRegex = """(.*?)\s+(.*)""".r
  val name = user.flatMap(_.getName match {
    case NameRegex(first, last) => Some((first, last))
    case _ => None
  })
  val firstName = name.map(_._1)
  val lastName = name.map(_._2)
}

object TwitterInfo {
  implicit def twitterUser2TwitterInfo(user: TwitterUser) = new TwitterInfo(if (user == null) None else Some(user))
}

Another thing to note is the use of a regular expression as an extractor to split up the Twitter name into separate first and last names. I picked up this technique from the Programming in Scala book and I have to say that it makes the code incredibly intuitive. I also made the name field a tuple to reuse this regular expression extraction: the firstName and lastName fields are then initialized to the first and second parts of it, respectively.

Implicit conversions continue to amaze me so I created the twitterUser2TwitterInfo method that converts a TwitterUser object into a TwitterInfo. Putting all of this together, we can use this TwitterInfo class to safely obtain the user’s Twitter name:

package com.pongr.twitter

import TwitterInfo._

object App {
  def main(args : Array[String]) : Unit = {
    print(new TwitterUser)
    print(new TwitterUser("asdf"))
    print(new TwitterUser("John Smith"))
  }

  def print(user: TwitterUser) = println(user.lastName.getOrElse("N/A") + ", " + user.firstName.getOrElse("N/A"))
}

The implicit conversion lets us (appear to) call TwitterInfo methods right on the TwitterUser object, and since the firstName and lastName fields are each an Option[String] we can gracefully handle the case where we don’t have the Twitter name. Running the above test app prints out the following:

N/A, N/A
N/A, N/A
Smith, John

I know this is a pretty simple example, but I thought it was a practical demonstration of some of the techniques that make Scala such a fun language to program with.

E’ tutto molto semplice…

To MP3:  			estrae e salva in Mp3.

To WAV: estrae e salva in WAV.

To AC3:  			estrae e salva in AC3.

Ele requer Python, PyGTK, o MPlayer e o lsdvd.

$ sudo apt-get install python python-gtk2 mplayer lsdvd lame vorbis-tools

$ sudo python setup.py install

OK.

[devidify]
ogg_quality = 6
mode = ogg
device = /dev/dvd
mp3_bitrate = 192

IMPORTANTE:
Salve-o no diretório do usuário que o utilizará. No meu caso: /home/benneh/

/usr/local/bin/devidify,
/usr/share/applications/devidify.desktop
/usr/local/share/devidify

Pronto! O devidify já está desinstalado.

Por enquanto é só. Um abraço e boa sorte!

Alright then, here’s my first software related post. Let’s see how this goes. This is a

Alright then, here’s my first software related post. Let’s see how this goes.

This is a must have piece of software. It’s name is 7-Zip.

7-Zip is an extractor. Extractors are commonly known, at least by windows users, as unzippers because the most common archival format is probably .zip, which most of you have certainly encountered. Anyway, besides ZIP files, there’s also RAR, TAR, BZIP2 (.bz), and ISO, to name the most common archival formats. Archival formats are popular because they can contain several files and folders by compressing them. Unfortunately, when they compress them,the file cannot be used until decompressed, or extracted.

Of the ones I listed above, 7-Zip can compress and extract files in all but ISO and RAR, which it can only extract. In total, 7-Zip can extract more than 18 archive types. WinRAR, perhaps the most popular competition, cannot extract the BZIP2 and TAR formats, which are more popular for cross-OS files. I’ve not come across an archive 7-Zip cannot handle, and considering how much downloading I do, I’m impressed.

Did I mention that 7-Zip is completely free? As in, you don’t need to pay for it, it doesn’t nag you to upgrade, or any of that? That’s the magic of open source. WinRAR’s free edition, on the other hand, is very naggy.

7-Zip also has the nice feature of allowing you to view the files before extracting. In less common cases, an archive will be put in another archive(I see this with a BZIP2 in a TAR occasionally.). 7-Zip can handle that in the same way it handles file browsing before extraction, though it needs to extract for each archive.

I highly recommend 7-Zip. I don’t see any reason to use any other extractor. But I’m not going to just recommend it, that’s what everyone does. In my software suggestions, I’m going to go over anything you need to know about the software.

In this case, Firefox didn’t initially see 7-Zip as a program that can open files. This is only a problem if you open files you downloaded from within the browser, though. If you go to open a file with firefox and you want to open the file with 7-Zip, go to browse, then find your 7-Zip folder and make sure to select 7zFM.exe. Then, it should work fine from there on.

Get it. Now.

Omer Reingold, Salil Vadhan, and Avi Wigderson won this years Gödel Prize for their brilliant work on the Zig-Zag Graph Product. I think this is a wonderful choice, and congratulate all three of them.

I am planning a post on this work in the future, but had to say something today. Especially, after my comments in an earlier post on the Gödel Prize.

Open Problem

I always end with an open problem. I guess today the best problem is to think of new ways to exploit their terrific ideas. I am sure that the zig-zag product will be used in many future papers.

So ladies and gentlemen, it is now time for me to share with you my favorite of my favorites when it comes to beauty products. Uh, YEAH!!

1) Clinique – Superbalm – Greatest lip smoothing treatment. Balm goes on clear and shiny so that you can wear it as gloss over color, or use it as a night-time lip treatment (it’s that powerful!). Fresh, citrusy scent is a bonus too.

2) L’occitane – Verbena Harvest Eau de Toilette – Mmm, if you like citrus scents, this is the one for you.

3) Laura Mercier – Tinted Moisturizer – Okay, so it’s a little spendy ($42) but trust me, it lasts for months and you’ll hardly ever have to wear foundation! Gives your skin a nice, pretty, polished glow that makes it LOOK like you’re wearing makeup without making you FEEL like you are.

4) Sephora – 4 Step Buffer – So I’ve already raved about this one. If you really must know, go back a few posts.

5) Anastasia – Perfect Brow Pencil – So I tried this one at Sephora and LOVED IT. It didn’t make my brows look fake, but it made them obviously better. I did one brow, then asked my (blind) sister which she felt looked better and she immediately said the one with Anastasia’s Pencil on it. (Of course I later filled in the other brow, I didn’t walk around looking like an idiot for long.)

6) Bare Minerals – Skin Rev-er Upper – Not really sure what this product was even designed to do, but, I think it’s supposed to act as a Primer for your Bare Minerals. That’s what the rest of la filles en ma famille use it as, but, I rarely use the Bare Minerals Foundation. I use this as a moisturizer! Minimizes the pores to the EXTREME, the only downside being that it smells like a Clorox Bleach testing facility (if that is even a thing).

7) Smashbox – Photo Finish Foundation Primer – Yeah so you see this in magazines and think it’s totally overrated. BUT IT’S NOT! It has silicone, which minimizes pores and fills in fine lines so you look like a million bucks even without foundation. I found this primer like 4 years ago and since it has grown to be the biggest success on the face of the planet and now comes in colors that do different things. Whatever, I don’t by that. Use the clear version and stick with the classic. C’mon Smashbox, don’t fix it if it ain’t broken.

8 ) Clinique – Brush-on Cream Liner – My mom bought this as a joke, for us to use as eye-black when we’re fangirls at football games. Yeah, well it worked then (lasted on my face from 7 in the morning to 2am all of Homecoming Friday!) and it works now, but in a different way. It’s great for those cute looks with a little perfect eyeliner and some bright lips. You know the ones. Or if you wanna wing it out the sides and be all dramatic. It’s a miracle worker that can do 1000000000 things.

9) Sephora – 3-in-1 Extractor – So it looks like a torture device, yeah. Kinda hurts your face, yeah. But it makes blackhead disappear! Like seriously. I would know, I have the worst blackheads and you just put the head around them and push. Voila! Blackheads no more.

10) MAC – Eyeshadow – Comes in a million colors and stays on all day. Again, back to Homecoming. “Aquadisac” stayed on my eyes for as long as the liner did. Awesome for when you have to basically plan Homecoming and look hot and fun all while running around with no time to pee, let alone touchup. (I also have it in Barbie and Brown Down, which are my two favorites.)

11) Mario Badescu – Drying Lotion – So I’ll be the first to say that this potion ain’t pretty. It looks so gross you won’t wanna put it on your face. (DON’T SHAKE, SHAKE SHAKE, A-SHAKE IT, OR YOU WILL BE SORRY.) But if you do get the nerve to try it, you’ll be happy. Just dip the q-tip into the pink gunk and rub it on a pimple, wake up the next morning and, I’m not saying it’s completely disappeared, but the size of the bump has gone down to the point that it’s just a little flat red spot. Well worth the seventeen bucks, and it lasts a lifetime.

12) Dove – Go Fresh Beauty Bar – So I’m basically a Marketing Major (We have “Majors” at my High School, weird, I know) and I can honestly say the best example of good Marketing is the Dove Go Fresh Beauty Bar. But it’s not hard to keep repeat customers coming back for more of this awesome soap. Smells delicious, doesn’t leave you feeling dry or sticky like regular soap, and it has little exfoliating beads that are soft enough to use daily. Plus it’s at drugstore prices, nothing is better than that.

13) Clinique – Clarifying Lotion 2 – Yummy! Best toner out there. Leaves skin feeling tight, but not like OH MY GOSH MY SKIN IS GOING TO TEAR OFF MY FACE tight. The good tight. Like tight shirts on Abercrombie Models tight. (Not that Abercrombie Models ever wear shirts, which is even better..) Stings when it gets in owies thought. But that means it’s working.

14) Secret – Aerosol Anti-Perspirant – I have a FES (that’s Foreign Exchange Student, for those of you non-that-70’s-show-viewers) and I steal this from her every once in a while. It smells great and doesn’t make you drippy or sweaty.

15) Mascaras:

All over best: Clinique – Long Pretty Lashes

Most Fun: Benefit – BADgal Blue

Lengthening: Maybelline – Volum Express (So Yeah, it says volumizing, but it’s more lengthening. Maybelline’s loss, our gain.)

Shiniest: Sephora Brand - Lengthening Mascara

Volumizing: Dior – DiorShow Mascara

16) Biore – Daily Recharging Revitalize 4-in-1 Cleanser – Great drugstore cleanser that minimizes pores and washes away acne and oils.

17) Benefit – Full Finish Lipstick – Great colors, stays on long and doesn’t come off through food and drinks and straws and whatnot. Not as bright colors as the tubes would have you think, but great nonetheless.

18) Tweezerman – Mini Slant Tweezers – Cute, little tweezers that get the job done!

19) Neutrogena – Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock – Dewy and glowy, smells great and protects from the sun. Doesn’t clog pores either! Great for daily use on your face.

Okay, well, there you have it. My top beauty picks! Plus tons of great mascaras for every occasion. Enjoy them all, my dears!

In the typical U.S. home 20% of electrical energy used is used by appliances. The biggest users are,

In the typical U.S. home 20% of electrical energy used is used by appliances. The biggest users are, of course, those appliances with the intended function of producing heat or coolness — water heaters, clothes dryers, refrigerators and freezers, air conditioners, and so on.

At a minimum, the conscientious consumer should be sure to buy “Energy Star” appliances when it comes time to replace old ones. Some of these may cost a bit more up front, but will save enough off your energy bill to re-pay the difference fairly quickly. Each month after that your savings will mount, as will the corresponding savings of pollution and greenhouse gas costs — as each month you will be using less energy than you might have.

Simply becoming more aware of the way you use energy and appliances can also make an appreciable difference. There are many lists available of these “Do’s and Don’ts” containing such tips as:

Turn off unnecessary lights

Set refrigerator at 40 degrees F; keep coils dust free

Wash only full loads in the washing machine or dishwasher

Don’t use the pre-rinse or dry cycles of the dishwasher

Use power strips to turn electronics off when not using, etc.

If you can find it in your heart to really care about the impact of your home energy use, then take the time to search for the MOST efficient options available. One good place to start looking is at www.metaefficient.com/

Here are just a few examples of the kinds of options you will find:

Spin-dryers (extractors) that remove most of the moisture from laundry, thus dramatically lowering drying time; also, “solar clothes dryers” — i.e. clotheslines and drying racks

‘Instant’ tankless water-heaters, including at least one model that accepts pre-warmed water from solar water-heaters; and solar water-heaters too

Low-flush and ultra-low-flush toilets that use much less water

A toilet tank-top sink that allows you to wash your hands in water that then fills the tank

An induction hob — a European type of cook-top that works by magnetic field — it doesn’t produce heat and is 85% – 95% efficient

Sun Frost refrigerators and freezers

Compact fluorescent lights or LEDs; and so on and on

There are, in fact, so many different ways to save energy that anyone who wants to is sure to find several to like. Don’t forget though — the best way to save energy is “Don’t buy, and Don’t use” whenever possible.
