A couple days ago, one of my regular readers( astro) shared a shocking story here in the comments

A couple days ago, one of my regular readers( astro) shared a shocking story here in the comments section. His source for the information was http://willcocks.blogspot.com/.

During one of last weeks storms and ensuing high seas, a cargo ship that was anchored offshore Mayne Island was pushed onto a reef, where it immediately became a serious threat to the coastline. While the ship was a cargo freighter, the fuel tanks may have been carrying up to 1.2 million gallons that- had the hull been punctured or breached- would have had catastrophic impact on our coast line.

Now, ships run aground more frequently than one thinks, so the fact that a ship became grounded on a reef is not the shocking part of the story that I refer to.

What is shocking, is that the BC Ministry of Environment saw the seriousness of the situation, and immediately notified the American government – but did not tell British Columbians one word. The American government issued a press release immediately, and swiftly mobilized staff to monitor the situation. I can not find one word of a press release from our government, still, today.

From Paul Willcock’s Blog:

So the B.C. Environment Ministry told Washington State, but provided no information to British Columbians.
The DFO, as far as I can tell, provided no public information.
The Gulf Islands Driftwood had the story by Friday afternoon.
But 72 hours after an incident that “could have oiled the islands on both sides of the border,” according to the government of Washington State, only a small number of British Columbians knew about the grounding. Governments were silent.
The argument for tanker traffic relies heavily on the effectiveness and accountability of governments in protecting the public interest.
But only Washington seemed to think this important enough to tell the public about.

The B.C. and Canadian governments didn’t think you needed to know.

Grant from The Straight Goods, took a break from busting Christy Clark’s chops long enough to give his take on the situation, HERE.

Today is Tuesday, November 24th, and as of yet I have heard, nor read any coverage of this locally. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

In fact, had it not been for ‘astro’ bringing us that bit of information from Paul’s website, I would never had heard about the incident that ” posed a significant risk of a large black oil spill” and ” could have oiled the islands on both sides of the border”. Likely you would not have either, unless you read Paul’s site, or Grant’s blog.

To me, it is completely unacceptable that the BC government would see fit to warn Americans of the possible danger of this grounding, but leave British Columbians in the dark! It makes me wonder at what point would they have issued a press release? When the oil was lapping on our shores?

***UPDATE: November 25th- I found this item on the NDP site : ” Liberal minister clueless about major threat to our coast”

excerpt:

When questioned by media in the legislature on Monday about the threat caused by the Hebei Lion, a large freighter that ran aground near Mayne Island last week, the B.C. Liberal Environment Minister, Barry Penner, had no idea an incident had even occurred.

~snip~

Fleming is especially concerned about the Mr. Penner’s lack of awareness about the situation given that other B.C. Liberal ministers are lobbying heavily for expanded crude oil supertanker traffic and for the lifting of the federal moratorium on coastal drilling.

“If the B.C. Liberal environment minister doesn’t even pay attention to the environmental threats caused by routine shipping activities, how can the people of British Columbia trust him to protect our coastal wilderness from coastal drilling and crude oil supertanker traffic?” asked Fleming.

Carole James and the New Democrats are fighting for an environmental action plan that respects communities, offers families positive choices and commits to concrete action to protect species at risk.

According to this release,” the media” questioned Barry Penner about this incident in the legislature, and he clearly had no clue it even happened, so what happened next? Nothing for those of us on the mainland. The Victoria Times Colonist ran this story yesterday, but as of this morning I can find nothing in any of the large local dailies or any other evidence this made a newscast in BC.

I’d like to know who in the media did that line of questioning, and why this item apparently did not make it to print or TV on this side of the water.

Is this not newsworthy for all British Columbians, or is everyone expected to read the Times Colonist?

***************************************************************************************************************************

If anything, this incident give me another reason to make something old, something new again. The Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project.

An issue for me the moment I heard about it, this is something I have been blogging about since May of this year, trying to inform as many people as I can.

The following is a re-post of a piece I published here online back in July, and leads you to links on other bits I’ve done previous to then, that will give you even more background on why this latest incident should make you all think about the risks we may shortly face along BC’s beautiful coast.

Debate rages on over Enbridge ‘Northern Gateway’ Project and the Liberals plan to allow oil tankers along the B.C. coast

As I sat and watched the CBC documentary, ” Black Wave: The Legacy of the Exxon Valdez” , I couldn’t help but wonder how long it would be before a disaster like this hit our beautiful B.C. coastline. That is, if the Northern Gateway project goes ahead in northern B.C., resulting in oil-supertankers zig-zagging their way along-side it.

The focus of intense scrutiny from both residents in the area and environmentalists alike, the project centers around the construction of two pipelines that will, when built, originate in the Edmonton area ,cross northern B.C. and will end in the port community of Kitimat. This is where Enbridge will construct a new port terminal, complete with two berths to accommodate oil tankers. Residents and environmentalists are worried about the likelihood of oil spills along both of the pipelines and the coastal waters of British Columbia – frankly, so am I.

I’ve written about this issue previously HERE and HERE- covering both the political and environmental angles of it. Although the NDP brought this project and the likelihood of oil tanker traffic along our coast up as an election issue,( oil tanker traffic has not been allowed along the BC coast for years, but Gordon Campbell plans to change all that) I’ve heard nothing since their defeat – a shame on all counts. The issue has certainly become no less important nor has it gone away.

This is why the timing of an email I received from a Kitimat resident was so relevant to what I learned from the Exxon Valdez documentary. But first, let’s take a look at the statistics.

Contrary to information given by those who support the project, oil spills at sea are not uncommon events at all. In fact, they actually happen all the time – they are just not highly publicized unless it is such a disastrous event that it merits the fleeting attention of the press. A good majority of spills happen at sea, and never even merit a mention, and some go entirely unreported. The documentary mentioned above covers all of this in complete detail, and is a must see for anyone who cares about this coastline.

According to the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation, there were 13 reported spills in 2007, and 3 of them were over 700 tonnes, which is considered to be a large spill.

It is accurate to say that with the number of oil tankers predicted to be travelling the coast of BC carrying condensate and oil back and forth from the pipeline, it is not a matter of ” if a spill happens”, but rather “when it happens”. And unlike spills at open sea, a spill among the islands and channels of the B.C coastline would have devastating and long-lasting consequences for years to come.

Nearly twenty years after the EXXON spill, there is still oil to be found in the area, not to mention the economic and personal costs inflicted on the residents that have never disappeared.

For example, the bankruptcies that occurred when several fisheries tanked as a result of oil contamination that affected the fish runs.

A class action court case that took so long children grew into adults while it continued on, because Exxon vowed they would do everything they could to NOT pay that judgement.

And the suicides – let us not forget those. Wonderful and vital members of the town of Cordova, Alaska who lost much during the years following the spill – including all hope – and could no longer bear the stress and strain of life after EXXON. There is no compensation for them, or their families because how can you attach a monetary value to a life.

In the end, the ocean and the town and the people in it were nothing more than a big bill to Exxon, a bill they didn’t even want to pay, because to pay the judgment meant losing money out of their operating capital that could be busy making them more money. Despite telling the people of Cordova they would make it right, and do whatever it took to make that happen, in the end it was not anything good or noble that made them pay- it was the highest court of law in the United States of America.

Is this what the residents of B.C. want? I can’t answer that question, because in my experience, very few people even know this project is happening, let along being supported fully by the B.C. government.

It is that lack of knowledge , and the lack of attention being paid to this by most local media, that infuriates me. How can someone object to something that they have no knowledge of? This is just what the Campbell government wants, and does best – keep silent, don’t answer any questions, and keep the people in the dark.

You will hear the premier speaking often about opening up the Asia Pacific Gateway, but has anyone heard the premier speak about how his government plans to handle an oil spill along the B.C coast that he promotes every where he travels? Supernatural BC alright – I wonder what will happen when boaters and coastal residents wake up and see the tankers along the coast…or worse yet, the stench of crude oil as it laps upon their beautiful seaside retreats – some of them perhaps, Liberal vacation homes.

It is the effort to inform the public combined with a fierce love for this province that drives the residents opposed to this project up north to soldier on, people like Murrey Minchin.

I received this letter to the editor he sent to the Northern Sentinal newspaper in Kitimat, on July 16th – Mr. Minchin will advise me if it is indeed published, as many publications in the north have developed a reputation for not printing letters that are in opposition to the project. I have inserted the link to the Enbridge webpage where the amount of oilspills they have had can be found, on page 34

” Dear Editor,

I’d like to respond to the article, ‘Gateway is a proposal, not a project: Harris’, in the July 8th, 2009 Northern Sentinel. In it, your reporter writes, “As for safety, Harris hoped the project will make the environment they work in” (then Harris is quoted as saying) “safer than without the project”.

When Mr Harris says things will be, “safer than without the project”, he’s probably referring to the aids to navigation on Douglas Channel that are part of the proposal. I can’t imagine even he believes two 1,170 km pipelines, one carrying 193,000 barrels (over 30 million litres) of condensate a day east to Alberta, and the other carrying 525,000 barrels (over 83 million litres) of oil a day west to Kitimat, or having supertankers zig-zagging their way down Douglas Channel can make the environments Enbridge works in, “safer than without the project”.

I’m guessing Enbridge didn’t hire Roger Harris as vice president of Communications and Aboriginal Partnerships for his in-depth knowledge of constructing oil pipelines and oil ports, or his expertise in their operation. My hunch is he was hired to draw on his many years in politics and be Enbridge’s spin doctor; to apply soft focus filters over the wrinkles in Enbridge’s Northern Gateway project. Spin doctors hide things like important details, or uncomfortable truths. They don’t give clear answers or reference their sources. I hope I’m wrong with this assumption, so I’m inviting Mr Harris to give some clear, concise answers to the following questions, and ask him to reply to them here in the Northern Sentinel for all to see.

1) How much time does it take a tethered tug to stop a fully loaded 1,148 foot long supertanker that’s carrying 2,050,000 barrels (over 325 million litres) of oil traveling at six knots, which has lost power?

2) If the powerless supertanker above was drifting at six knots while traveling with a six knot outgoing tide (or twelve knots relative to the shore, islands, shoals, etc), what distance would the tug and supertanker travel before the tug could stop it, then pull it backwards fast enough to gain directional control?

3) The almost 40 year old Pacific Northern Gas underground pipeline has been ruptured once in the Copper River valley and once in the Howson Range by landslides. How much oil would spill into the Copper River if the pipeline is hit by another 1.4 million cubic meter landslide, as happened in the Copper River valley 15.5 kilometers from the Skeena River on June 8, 2002? Given there are to be ten pumping stations on the pipeline, isn’t there a possibility that 10% of the 525,000 barrels of oil (that would be 52,500 barrels, or over 8 million litres) would spill into the Copper, then Skeena Rivers?

4) According to the Enbridge website their Canadian and US pipelines spilled 13,777 barrels (over 2 million litres) of oil in 2007. This was east of the Rocky Mountains on comparatively flat terrain. Do you, Mr Harris, believe the Copper and Skeena Rivers as well as Douglas Channel and all its connecting waterways are, “safer than without the project”? If not, why?

5) Why won’t Enbridge agree to have a full public enquiry held in Kitimat, requiring sworn testimony on all aspects of the Northern Gateway project?

My hope is Mr Harris will answer these questions clearly and with definitive numbers, but my fear is they’ll be spin doctored out of harms way. That would mean one of two things; either Enbridge is hiding facts which they know would cause massive environmental harm, or they haven’t bothered to research things fully. Both are unacceptable!

TORRANCE EXXON REFINERY RANKS #6 IN CALIFORNIA, EL SEGUNDO CHEVRON REFINERY IS #4

Click on the breaking news above and you’ll finally get to see the greenhouse gas numbers on our two local climate changing refineries that I’ve been demanding for a year now. The CARB released them about an hour ago, too early for the morning papers, but not to early for your Creative Greenius.

I’ve been a little busy the past few months and I’ve fallen behind in covering some of the bigger environmental news stories locally here in my own backyard, but today we’re going to play catchup, big time -

Councilman Furey pledging his allegiance to fossil fuels, global warming and more CO2

Let’s start with the $80,000 legal bribe Torrance City Councilman, Pat Furey, was so proud of getting from his friends at the world’s most unethical oil company, you know… the one currently melting the ice caps, glaciers and overheating our planet’s atmosphere while lying, scamming and covering up their deadly actions. Yeah, that’s right - good old #6 on the state list of greenhouse gas emitters the Torrance refinery owned by EXXON!

It happened on October 20 and I was there in-person, sitting in the front row with Torrance Democratic Club President, Rick Wagner, when Furey practically soiled himself in his seat, so enthusiastic and praise-filled was his shameless ballwashing of Exxon as our great neighbor who contributes to the health and well-being of our community. So shameless was Fossil Furey that he extolled the value of having Exxon around for our kids.

Yes, the same kids whose future Furey just sold down the river for a new library in his district. Furey will tell you his whole career has been all about helping kids. Too bad his actions enabling Exxon to destroy the futures of those very same children wipes out the value of that resume.

The Greenius says the children of the South Bay and all of California should hold this fluffer for Exxon personally responsible for the hell and high water that’s coming their way. Just as they should hold every one of Furey’s fellow failed public servants libel since they all voted unanimously to have the citizens of Torrance bend over for this $80,000 payoff. Their inexcusable ignorance harms us all.

And if you think that’s too tough and too harsh then you don’t know Exxon’s record of evil like I do. But you should. Just read this:

Records show ExxonMobil gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to lobby groups that have published ‘misleading and inaccurate information’ about climate change

Even self-professed “Environmental Champion,” Cliff Numark, who looked so embarrassed and ashamed of himself I thought he was going to crawl under his chair, voted “YES” to praise Exxon and sell my city’s soul for cash. But shamed though he might have been, Champion Cliff, couldn’t find the cajones to cast a “no” vote. Not exactly a profile in courage, was it, Cliff?

$80,000 in exchange for pumping 2,852,374 tons of greenhouse gas into the air all our kids breathe while we’re already in the danger zone for global warming? Damn, these politicians sell our kids out for peanuts, don’t they?

Here’s the brilliant job of reporting our Living Dead Zombie newspaper, the Daily Breeze, did on this news:

Exxon Mobil’s Torrance refinery has donated $80,000 to the North Torrance Library. The refinery has operated in the community for 80 years and Torrance is in the process of renovating all its branch libraries.

Meanwhile, here’s a story they badly missed just two months earlier about that same Exxon Mobil Torrance refinery. I found it in the WSJ:

ExxonMobil Torrance, CA

An unidentified refinery process unit was shut down Aug 25.
No restart estimate.

It’s obvious to this Creative Greenius that Exxon is not just one of the single biggest obstacles to stopping Global Warming and one of the biggest polluting companies on the face of this earth – it’s obvious that they flat out own the government here in ToxicTown Torrance. They own them and they control their votes and they do it by paying them for it. As Woodward and Bernstein taught me while I was still in high school – Follow the Money.

Maybe Exxon money is the reason there wasn’t a single elected official or city worker in Torrance who would tell the city’s citizens how much CO2 that Exxon refinery was pumping into our atmosphere for the past two years. But now we know, because the Air Resources Board finally released the number we never would have gotten if it was up to the people who take checks from Exxon to pay the bills.

“Oh, Greenius, you’re just being mean and too harsh!” you might be saying. “Maybe the Mayor and the City Council aren’t evil and sellouts, maybe they’re just too ignorant to understand what they’re voting on,” you might remind me. “They’re not criminals, they’re just clueless,” might be your rallying cry on their behalf.

You might be right.

Maybe that’s why this same group of representatives also voted unanimously on October 20 to endorse and support the 350 ppm target for CO2 at the very same Council meeting mere minutes after falling all over themselves to genuflect in front of their oil company masters. Perhaps they don’t understand that we can’t reach 350 with that fossil fuel Exxon Mobil refinery doing what they do in our town.

It doesn’t matter whether they understand or not. They’ve made commitments to reduce greenhouse gases and to get to 350 and they will be held to those commitments whether they grok it or they don’t. They won’t have a choice from a responsibility standpoint and they don’t have a choice scientifically either.

Don’t forget – I too have made a commitment and I take my commitments a lot more seriously then people who will sell their votes for cash. I’m committed to getting rid of that Exxon Mobil refinery by my 60th birthday on September 18, 2017. I’ve said so publicly and I understand exactly what I’m talking about. Those 750 acres are now slated to become a large scale solar powered energy plant.

Maybe the incompetent representatives and staff here in Torrance whose salaries my tax dollars pay for don’t have a clue what’s coming next for Exxon and their future around these parts, but I do.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Sarah Palin’s new memoir, “Going Rogue,” already has been strongly criticized by John McCain’s aides for her account as a vice presidential candidate on the ticket with him in their unsuccessful 2008 race for the White House.

By Dirk Van Dijk
November 18, 2009

Normally, the focus of this article has been on the industries that have the best overall Zacks ranks, with an occasional mention of the industries that rank particularly badly and thus should be avoided. This week, however, I want to look at some of the industries that are showing sharp improvements in rank, even if they are still far from the top of the list.

Ideally, you would want to focus on the industries that are both near the top of the list and rising fast, but that rarely happens, especially for industries with a large number of participants. The Zacks Industry Rank is an un-weighted average of the Zacks ranks of the firms in the industry, so it is much easier for a small industry with only two or three firms in it to rise quickly and have a very good-looking rank than it is for a large industry with 25 or 30 firms in it.

A good example of an industry that is showing both a very good overall rank and substantial improvement is Oil Royalty Trusts, which with a industry rank of 2.00 is tied for 4th place with several other industries. What sets it apart is that it improved 21 spots in its ranking as the average ranking of its components, up from 2.43 last week. Every one of the seven firms in the industry has a Zacks Rank of 2.

These are great vehicles for income-oriented investors, as they simply represent big pools of oil or natural gas in the ground. As the oil is produced, the proceeds are paid out in the form of dividends. It also means that the dividends are very variable with the price of oil.

The problem with them is that eventually the oil in the ground will run out, so some of that dividend is really a return of capital, not a return on capital. Thus if you are thinking about investing in them, look at how long those reserves will last, as well as the current income you are getting from them.

On the plus side, the tax code recognizes this, so a portion of the dividend is sheltered from the IRS. Unlike a regular exploration and production oil firm, there is no risk of a dry hole, nor are they exposed to changes in the price of drilling. If you think that the price of oil is headed higher, they are very attractive investments, especially if you want current income. Two of the larger names in the area that are worth considering are B.P. Prudhoe Bay Trust (BPT) and San Juan Basin (SJT).

A good example of a big important industry that is still distinctly mediocre in terms of its absolute standing is the Integrated Oil Industry, the home of some of the world’s largest firms like Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Petrobras (PBR). It currently has an average rank of 2.95, which puts it in 102nd place out of 206 industries ranked. That, however, is a substantial improvement from the 3.16 average last week, and was enough to lift it by 49 spots.

A good example of an industry that scores poorly on both fronts, and thus should be avoided is the SBIC and Commercial lenders group. It is no secret that credit for small businesses has been under pressure for awhile now, but this suggests that things are still getting worse. The industry rank for the group is a very weak 3.43, which currently puts it in 192nd place, a deterioration of 31 spots from last week when its overall score was 3.21.

Přidělení práv na rozvoj velkého ropného pole Západní Qurná v jižním Iráku společnostem Exxon-Mobil

Přidělení práv na rozvoj velkého ropného pole Západní Qurná v jižním Iráku společnostem Exxon-Mobil a Royal Dutch Shell minulý čtvrtek (5.11.) znovu zvýraznilo zločinný charakter pokračující americké okupace.

Během 20 let platnosti kontraktu plánují Exxon-Mobil a Shell zvýšit denní produkci Západní Qurny z méně než 300 000 barelů na 2,3 milionu barelů v období prvních šesti let.
Podíl BP činí 38 a CNPC 37 procent.
To umožnilo premiéru Núrímu al-Málikímu a jeho ministru ropného průmyslu Husajnu al-Šahristánímu ignorovat parlament a absenci zákona o ropě a plynu a rozhodnout o energetickém průmyslu sami.
Další smlouvy jsou před dokončením. Konsorcium složené z italské společnosti Eni, americké Occidental a jihokorejské Kogas podepsalo předběžnou dohodu o ropném poli Zubajr, jehož rezervy činí 4 miliardy barelů.
Zalmay Khalilzad, bývalý vyslanec v Afghánistánu, Iráku a u OSN, vytvořil vlastní společnost poskytující poradenskou službu v kurdském městě Irbílu.
Vysocí představitelé společností Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, Conoco-Phillips, BP America a Shell se počátkem roku 2001 zúčastnili rozhovorů s „energetickým komandem“ Bushovy administrativy vedeným viceprezidentem Dickem Cheneym. Jeden z dokumentů připravených pro debatu obsahoval mapu iráckých ropných polí, terminálů a ropovodů a seznam neamerických zahraničních společností připravených tam vstoupit.

I know facts aren’t going to matter to many people buying Sarah Palin’s, Going Rogue. Facts certainly didn’t matter to folks who voted for her.

According to the “fact checkers”:

PALIN: Welcomes last year’s Supreme Court decision deciding punitive damages for victims of the nation’s largest oil spill tragedy, the Exxon Valdez disaster, stating it had taken 20 years to achieve victory. As governor, she says, she’d had the state argue in favor of the victims, and she says the court’s ruling went “in favor of the people.” Finally, she writes, Alaskans could recover some of their losses.

THE FACTS: That response is at odds with her reaction at the time to the ruling, which resolved the long-running case by reducing punitive damages for victims to $500 million from $2.5 billion. Environmentalists and plaintiffs’ lawyers decried the ruling as a slap at the victims and Palin herself said she was “extremely disappointed.” She said the justices had gutted a jury decision favoring higher damage awards, the Anchorage Daily News reported. “It’s tragic that so many Alaska fishermen and their families have had their lives put on hold waiting for this decision,” she said, noting many had died “while waiting for justice.”

When Sarah Palin was asked by Katie Couric what Supreme Court decisions other than Roe v Wade she disagreed with, she couldn’t think of one. NOT ONE! Sarah squandered an opportunity-the perfect chance to tell America our story…an Alaskan story…dozens of suicides…thousands sick from clean up…tens of thousands bankrupt from a dead fishery.

Oiled birds from the Exxon Valdez

Sarah Palin is to Alaska what Velveeta is to cheese; sadly unsatisfying and empty of nutrition. She had the national stage to plead Alaska’s case to citizens who had long forgotten the images of a once pristine Prince William Sound turned into a thick, black, rolling sea; the oiled sea otters and birds; unrecognizable seals and whales; an initially deformed and diseased herring run that became extinct-costing Cordova $100 million a year. Exxon exploited Alaska and turned pain into profit.

AND NOW, Palin is claiming to be part of a victory for the people of Alaska? Reality Deficit Disorder…now in book form.

The Exxon Shipping Co. v. Baker Supreme Court decision in June 2008 all but pardoned Exxon’s negligence. The highest court in the land condoned the half-assed cleanup. (audio interview on the day of the ruling with Greg Palast). Exxon, the company that set and broke planet earth’s quarterly profit record three quarters in a row, was let off the hook. Because of this unprecedented landmark decision, future corporate punitive damages are now forever minimally capped at literally pennies on the dollar!

The Roberts Court based its activist ruling on 19th century maritime law. Really! 21st century corporations can now view punitive damages as the small cost of doing business. Due to Exxon’s negligence and the corporate sympathy of the Supreme Court, one the largest acts of environmental terrorism in history was treated like an accidental littering. The RATS-Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia, (Alito recused himself, confident that Souter and Kennedy would fill the business-friendly void) winked at their corporate masters as the Judas Court betrayed Justice.

Exxon doesn’t have marked offices in Alaska. There are some pretty hard feelings even 20 years later…for some pretty good reasons. When Palin was pointing fingers at Letterman in July of this year, she did it from Houston, Texas. She was there to sign a deal with Exxon on behalf of Alaska. The state’s willingness to do business with Exxon was like having your parents rent the basement to the guy who date raped you on prom night. Am I clear?

So Sarah was against the decision before she couldn’t remember it before she was for it. And now, courtesy of Going Rogue, Sarah Palin manages to insult and injure Alaskans who will never be made whole with yet another one of her documented lies.

The jury originally punished Exxon with $5 billion in punitive damages-a year’s profit at the time. In 2008, nearly 20 years later, Exxon reported the largest annual profit in US history at $45.22 billion. The company shattered its own record set the previous year. Would the original $5 billion in punitive damages been punishment enough? The answer is now slowly dripping onto victims at 10 cents on the dollar. Opening your mailbox to an Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Settlement check is like getting a royalty payment for the snuff film your kid brother was in. Hey, you’re getting paid…but he’s still dead and you got to watch.

(above) Then Governor Palin’s appropriate reaction to the Exxon v. Baker decision June, 2008

Strategy: To replace oil based plastics with bio-degradable replacements for global packaging needs

Strategy: To replace oil based plastics with bio-degradable replacements for global packaging needs by development and licensing of innovative products for packaging companies. Lessening dependence upon oil and capitalizing on consumer and government preferences for clean, organic packaging.

Product: At pricing that is 20-25% higher than comparable oil based products; Cereplast designs and manufactures proprietary bio-based, sustainable plastics used in all major converting processes – such as injection molding, thermoforming, blow molding and extrusions.

Market- On November 11, the company said it expects the U.S. bio-plastics market to reach $10 billion in sales by 2020. The U.S. market accounted for approximately $1 billion in sales in 2007, with some estimates pointing to bio-plastics capturing 30% of the total plastics market by 2019. Cereplast has some products that are food based, with a focus on algae based products as well. Cereplast is an investment in their technology and the market.

Competition: Metabolix, Archer Daniels Midland, Alcoa, Synthetic Genomics, Martek

Funding: A private investor group led by a Swedish Bank has contributed funding in 2009, Cereplast has the right to sell $20MM of common stock to Cumorah Capital, and most significantly in 2007 the company announced it received $14.5 million in new capital through a private placement of common stock from a group of leading “green” institutional funds, including UBS Global Innovator Fund, Swisscanto Green Invest Fund, Fortis L Fund Equity Environmental Sustainability World, and Credit Suisse Future Energy Fund.

Stock Symbol (OTCBB:CERP)

In a related note, Exxon has invested $600 million in Synthetic Genomics and BP has a $10 million investment in Martek Biosciences that compete with Cereplast.

Management: Frederic Scheer, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Cereplast

Comment: This company is an investment in a growing sector, but is their technology superior to larger and better funded competitors? Will their food based products overcome the hurdles that corn based ethanol faced?

Human Rights Campaign’s Buyers’ Guide 2009

Very cool. And good to know that a lot of companies that I already buy from have very good scores.

Only real bummer: ExxonMobile Man!!! I am such an Exxon customer. ugh. Well it’s too bad for them I stick to my friggin guns. I immediately went to their website and sent them this comment:

I recently graduated from college and began work in the Washington DC area. Over the years I have found myself to be quite a loyal customer of ExxonMobile. I carry a speedpass. The nearest gas station to my house is an Exxon. I always looked for Exxon gas stations while traveling (I’ve put 100,000 miles on my car since I got it 4 years ago). Unfortunately tonight I (finally!) came across the Human Rights Campaign’s buyers’ guide online (Buying for Equality 2009). It saddened me to see Exxon’s poor Corporate Equality Index (and by poor I mean abysmal). Unfortunately, I can no longer support ExxonMobile. I wanted to share this with you in the hopes that things will improve at ExxonMobile, and I can continue my business there. Thank you for your time.

Done annnnnnnnnd Done.

A decades-long feud between a wealthy Texas oil family and oil giant ExxonMobil continues to rage, according to the November issue of the always spot-on Texas Monthly. The piece lays out the case of the O’Connor family, which charges Exxon with deliberately clogging oil wells on the family’s property in order to guard against future competition after Exxon plugged the wells and abandoned the fields in the early 1990s.

Despite losing a verdict earlier this year by the Texas Supreme Court, the O’Conner’s intend to continue their fight against the oil giant. While there was significant evidence presented of Exxon’s sabotage, the court ruled against the family based on its interpretation that the case was filed two months past the statute of limitations. However, since Exxon failed to properly inform the Texas Railroad Commission about its methods in plugging the O’Conner wells, the family intends to pursue fraud charges.

Given the O’Conner family’s wealth and Exxon’s massive coffers, the fight could continue for years to come. As The Monthly noted,

The O’Connors and Exxon appear to be opposite sides of the Texas coin, with the former representing the rugged individualists who built this state and the latter representing the new Texas, a place driven by corporate wealth, political and legal power, and job creation. In a sense, we’re witnessing the sequel to Giant, the film that, for many people, captured the conflict between oilmen and cattlemen. In the Hollywood version, the rancher prevailed and the oilman was disgraced, but in today’s Texas, the corporation usually has its way.

And in Texas, as elsewhere, when corporations have their way, the rest of us suffer. The Monthly article concludes, “(G)iant companies are now allowed to operate in parts of Texas the same way they have operated in some Third World countries: exploiting the resources and moving on, without looking back.”

This morning, the Bank of Tokyo met Exxon in order to find a way to cooperate with the green branch of Exxon. Exxon, principaly implanted in the USA and Europe, needs a substantial investment for their new activities. It seems that the Bank of Tokyo, is only interested in green projects, could accept a proposition that can help them to be at the front of the stage.

Πού πάμε ξυπόλητοι στ’ αγκάθια; Πού πάμε;
