This means tech companies can build software that will run on the credit card-sized Wi-Fi router that uses Verizon’s or Sprint’s 3G network as its backhaul to the Internet — and essentially turns a person into a walking Wi-Fi hotspot.

Vendors are already taking advantage of the development program. James over at our sister blog jkOnTheRun wrote about Eye-Fi, which makes a Wi-Fi card that allows people to transfer photos from their camera to their PC without a cord, building a program that allows folks to send photos to the MiFi when they aren’t in a traditional hotspot. He didn’t understand why anyone would want to do this, however after talking with people in the consumer device industry and with carriers, it’s clear that they think using the MiFi as a way to connect consumer devices to a cellular network has a lot going for it. Companies making cameras, MP3 players and other portable devices that might benefit from 3G connectivity would rather consumers use MiFi or a similar device then have to embed an LTE or CDMA chip directly into their gadgets. Not only would it be cheaper for the cost-sensitive device makers, which wouldn’t have to put more expensive cellular radios in their products, but it would also mean that consumers wouldn’t have to pay for multiple subscriptions to get connectivity on a variety of devices. Instead, they would pay for an unlimited data plan from a carrier and essentially turn their purse or pocket into a Wi-Fi hotspot that travels with them wherever they go.

The downside of this is twofold. One, current MiFi data plans — which run about $60 per month for 5GB — aren’t exactly cheap. Two, carriers have expressed a desire (and have a business need) to adjust their payment plans to account for machine-to-machine connectivity. For example, AT&T’s Glen Lurie told me that for photos the carrier might try to get consumers to buy prepaid cards that allow for a certain number of photo transfers using a 3G-connected camera. For a carrier, such a program could boost margins, and be priced so it doesn’t overwhelm the data network with too much traffic.

But if the idea of consumers becoming walking hotspots is embraced by gadget makers and users alike, we could see connectivity on more of our devices sooner rather than later. Currently I use my iPod touch in conjunction with my MiFi and love it. Since the MiFi supports up to five devices, I would be excited to see what else I could add to my portfolio of WiFi-connected gadgets. At this point the only thing standing between me and ubiquitous connectivity everywhere is the 5-GB-per-month limit on my data plan and the lack of Wi-Fi chips in most of my portable devices.

I have always been curious about what kind of tools people have used to liveblog events (especially those involving Apple). As many of you readers know, Apple recently held a media event on 9.9.09. I jumped on the opportunity to attend and represent TheAppleBlog. Naturally, one of my responsibilities was to liveblog everything.

Here’s the plan that was put together:

Hardware

Macbook Pro

iPhone

Canon G10

Eye-Fi Pro card

Software

CoverItLive

Text messaging

Email

Flickr

Adium

Eye-Fi Manager

Josh Pigford, TheAppleBlog’s editor, manned the computer to keep up a constant stream of updates on Twitter and CoverItLive, an awesome liveblogging tool. Before I had access to a Wi-Fi network, I used my iPhone to send Josh text messages and email photos. I was warned by several other attendees that Wi-Fi never holds up during events. The proof? Everyone there appeared to have a 3G card for their laptops. I was extremely concerned, but at least I had my iPhone as a backup.

Once the press were allowed to check in and move closer to the building, I whipped out my Macbook Pro and jumped on the Wi-Fi network. I had to configure the Eye-Fi card so my Canon G10 would automatically upload photos as I took them. Configuring the card was quick and easy (thanks Eye-Fi!). The photos would be uploaded to Eye-Fi and then immediately sent to my Flickr account for Josh to grab.

Eventually we were allowed to enter and take our seats. The end result was a comical combination of high and low tech. While photos were uploading (over the surprisingly reliable Wi-Fi network) I typed out virtually everything said on stage to Josh over AOL Instant Messenger (Adium). It was his responsibility to interpret and publish my never-ending stream of consciousness writing style into something you could read through via CoverItLive. I was surprised to see how much he let through (including my comments about Phil Schiller dancing in his seat).

I hope you all enjoyed the coverage, and if you have any suggestions on how to improve for next time please leave a comment.

Eye-Fi Pro.

Home Video

Welcome back! It’s about that time to start winding down a pretty low-key day. Things will rev up for the rest of the week starting tomorrow!

Steve made our lunch today…Cashew Shrimp Lettuce Wraps!

I had these three plus another spoonful of the filling.

Meh...

I loved the shrimp mixture but the cashew butter sauce wasn’t my favorite. I couldn’t really pinpoint what it was – we toyed around with it a little, added a few extra spices and some Bragg liquid amino acids (tastes like soy sauce and so good for you). But it just never caught on for me. So we chopped up a few raw cashew nuts and mixed it in with the shrimp for a nutty flavor, and I put a small dollop of the sauce on the side for dipping. ‘Didn’t use much.

While Steve put lunch together, I began work on our afternoon snack because the prep takes a while.

Started with a few heads of garlic roasted at 350 for 45 minutes.

The best part was the aroma that wafted through our apartment for the rest of the afternoon!

We let the garlic cool and then squeezed the pulp into a food processor. Added some pitted green and kalamata olives, a bit of freshly squeezed lemon juice, a touch of EVOO and turned on the motor.

The result…homemade olive tapenade with raw veggies! Yumminess! Even Steve, who’s not a huge olive fan, loved it! And there’s tons more in the fridge for the rest of the week.

Take a moment to admire the presentation.

Steve took the dogs out while I did some work this afternoon, and he and came back with a present from the Amazon.com fairies!

More NCLEX study materials! I’m determined to pass this monster the first time around.

My new Eye-Fi wireless camera memory card…cross your fingers it works – I’ve read mixed reviews since ordering it

The UltraMetabolism Cookbook – As in UltraMetabolism, he breaks the recipes into “Phase I” and “Phase II” categories…we’ll be in Phase I for the first three weeks, then transition into Phase II. The original book only has 7 days’ worth of meals planned out, so now we don’t have to eat the same exact foods each week during each phase. Hurrah!

Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred DVD…my October workout goal. Great online reviews and a few friends have tried it and loved it. And since the workouts are only 20 minutes, I’m going to try my hardest to still get through them on clinical mornings.

Such a delightful package put me in a great mood as I began preparing dinner…Orange Chicken with Escarole and Buckwheat Groats.

The chicken was baked in an orangey sauce with a secret ingredient…

Figs!

The sauce didn’t look very appetizing but it was pretty good in the end. We cooked the buckwheat groats (a.k.a. kasha – another gluten-free grain) in a little organic low-sodium chicken broth to give it more flavor.

I couldn’t find escarole last weekend, so I had to substitute and and decided to give kale a try. Smartest veggie decision EVER! I LOVE kale!

Bunches of green goodness!

We steamed it up with a tiny pinch of sea salt and it really retained its crispiness. I will definitely have to try some other kale receipes in the future. Any suggestions?

Headed to bed soon to prepare for a busy remainder of the week. Nite nite folks!

P.S. As if my day couldn’t get any better, Kashi e-mailed me this evening and said my free sample of their Honey Almond Flax Go Lean Crunch is on the way!

Let’s takes a look at ten current options in the social hardware category. And though we’ve picked our top 10, there are many more social devices out there. Be sure to let us know your favorites in the comments!

10. Roku Player

We’ve been following along as TV is getting more social. Here’s one great device for tapping into that trend: the Roku Player taps into your queue from the increasingly socially-enabled Netflix, as well as from Amazon Video on Demand and MLB.com. It connects directly to your television set and delivers video content over the internet.

Plus, Roku has other partners planned for content delivery on its $99 set-top box. Social video site blip.tv has confirmed it’s working to get established as a channel on Roku, and a leaked screenshot provides strong evidence that YouTube is on the list of future partners as well. With at least 10 new partners planned before the end of this year, it will be exciting to see which services sign on for distribution via Roku.

9. Ooma Hub

Offering an interesting new business model for the home phone line, Ooma makes a hardware solution for voice over IP (VoIP) calling that you pay for once and then avoid monthly phone charges thereafter. Other VoIP services live Skype () and Vonage have stuck with the monthly subscription model, but Ooma essentially subsidizes your entire lifetime’s worth of calling through the purchase of the approximately $250 hardware.

Or at least, that portion of your lifetime during which Ooma is able to stay in business. Still, depending on how much you currently pay for home phone service you’re probably looking at breaking even in less than a year. On the flip side, as with other internet-based telephony solutions, you’re looking at downtime whenever your ISP is down. Ooma does offer integration service with an existing landline for just such emergencies, but then you’re still footing an extra bill for voice service.

As an alternative to other VoIP models, the Ooma is worth checking out. The reviews of the hardware itself have been generally favorable as well.

8. INQ Phones

UK-based INQ takes a unique approach to social networking integration on mobile devices. It offers several phones specifically designed to integrate with Facebook and Twitter .

Other phones let you access Facebook or Twitter of course, but the INQ phones are notable in part for not being smartphones — they’re designed more for the average user who doesn’t need all the bells and whistles of something like an iPhone, yet wants to be highly connected to their social networks on the go.

Some may decry the idea of a mobile phone being designed for such a singular purpose, but let’s remember that back in the day our phones were designed with truly one purpose in mind: to call people. In today’s world, “staying connected” involves more options than simply voice, and it makes sense that handset manufacturers would seek to cater to some of those methods without having to go whole hog and implement a full application platform on the device.

7. Squeezebox

Logitech has several offerings in their Squeezebox line of networked music players. In addition to your own music collection, you can listen to online music services like Rhapsody, Napster, Pandora , last.fm, Slacker and other internet radio.

What’s also cool about Squeezebox is you can link it with your last.fm account and scrobble the tracks you listen to. “Scrobbling” is last.fm’s lingo for sending the list of songs you play to your last.fm profile to be displayed and counted along with the rest of your music taste statistics.

6. Flip Mino

The Flip Mino line of pocket camcorders is designed with easy social video sharing in mind. The camera comes with pre-installed software called FlipShare that makes it dead easy to upload your videos to your favorite social video sites including YouTube , Myspace and AOL Video.

The Flip fits easily in the palm of your hand and connects to your computer via a retractable USB connector. There’s a standard and an HD version of the Flip, depending on what kind of quality level you desire for your video. If you’re interested in one-touch video uploads to the web, these little guys are definitely worth checking out.

5. Xbox 360

Beyond its ability to get you into great multiplayer gaming, Microsoft’s video game console is a socially-connected device in several other ways. Beyond voice and text chat and member messaging, Xbox Live Gold subscribers can access their Netflix instant queues from the console’s online service.

This fall, even more social integration comes to the Xbox 360, with both Twitter and Facebook coming to the console, including the ability to post in-game screenshots to your Facebook profile. Microsoft will also be adding last.fm to the 360, with unlimited playback for XBLA Gold subscribers and three hours monthly plays for free Silver users (similar to Pandora’s model, although Pandora gives you a much heftier 40 hours’ worth of free tunes).

Plus, the Xbox 360 Elite bundle just got a nice $100 price drop, so if you’re in the market for a game console it’s a good time to be looking at the 360.

4. Pogoplug

Pogoplug is a very handy little device that can convert any memory stick or external hard drive into network storage you can access or share over the web. You plug in the device to a power outlet, connect it to your home router, and attach a thumb or hard drive to its USB port — and that’s it. Your drive is now securely accessible over the web at my.pogoplug.com.

You can also mount the drive through the Mac Finder or Windows Explorer as well. Mac support is a welcome touch for Pogoplug, with HFS+ external drives being supported as well. If you have photos, home videos or other files you want to share with others, friends can access and download them or simply view them right from their browsers, without even needing to spend the time uploading them to sharing sites.

Pogoplug’s add-on architecture will also reportedly soon allow connection to popular destinations like backup services, cloud file sync sites and photo printing, to name a few. The device is currently available for $99.

3. Eye-Fi

Eye-Fi is a product line of SD and SDHC storage cards that have built-in wireless connectivity, essentially giving any camera that takes SD memory the ability to upload images (and via certain cards video as well) instantly over Wi-Fi. Instead of hooking up a cable and transferring your photos to your computer manually, the Eye-Fi can automatically be set to upload them straight to your computer over a wireless connection.

And if you’re not near your computer, you can have the images uploaded to Eye-Fi’s storage cloud and beamed back down to your home computer, even if it’s thousands of miles away. With the Share versions of the cards, you can also have images automatically uploaded to any of up to 25 photo-sharing sites including Flickr , Facebook and Picasa.

With a range of sizes, features and prices from $49.99 to the $149.99 4GB Pro card that also supports RAW uploads and geotagging, there might be a card that fits your needs and budget. Check out the comparison chart of the different Eye-Fi versions.

2. T-mobile myTouch 3G

One reason we love phones: they’re inherently social. We tried not to flood the list with them, but couldn’t resist including an offering that runs Google’s Android operating system: the T-Mobile myTouch 3G.

The successor to the first Android () phone available in the U.S., the G1, the myTouch is essentially identical to the HTC Magic that has been out in Europe, Canada and parts of Asia since earlier 2009. Running the latest Android 1.5 software, also known as “Cupcake,” the myTouch 3G features even tighter integration with Google’s () impressive range of cloud products and web services including YouTube, Picasa, Gmail (), Google Maps (), and more.

Although in some ways hardware makers have yet to fully deliver on the promise that is the open source Android OS, the myTouch 3G is certainly a step in the right direction over the G1.

1. Apple iPhone 3GS

Still, in our minds, there’s a reigning champion in the mobile phone department. It’s made by Apple, and some of you may even have heard of it… yes, it’s the latest edition of Apple’s iconic iPhone, the 3GS.

Featuring a higher-resolution camera with video support, a larger size option at 32 GB, and faster performance, the 3GS isn’t exactly a revolutionary upgrade over the previous 3G model. But it’s a welcome update to Apple’s flagship mobile device nevertheless.

The iPhone was also the device that kicked off the age of the mobile application store. Much like the iTunes experience before it did for digital music, the iPhone application ecosystem took mobile apps mainstream. And with over 65,000 choices and counting, there’s no shortage of options to choose from — many of which keep us connected to our favorite web and social services while on the go.

Any top 10 list is controversial and we’re sure we’ve left out some worthy pieces of social hardware. What’s your favorite social gadget? Which of the devices on this list do you use already? Let us know in the comments.

*Disclaimer – this is my lame attempt at actually blogging – hence the delayed posting (you wouldn’t know it, but I’m very shy). I skipped about 30 people in line (see below) because I had a media pass. With privilege comes responsibility, so… as a good blogger, therefore I blog.

Digital Summer - an event presented last Wednesday by Ubergizmo (consumer electronics blog) and Girls in Tech, and produced by Digital Seasons was overpopulated with lines of up to 2o minutes long, chaotic with unprofessional handpicking by organizers of the special people in line < just think Madeleine Kahn, from History of the World Pt. 1>

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO YES NO NO YES NO NO YES

Despite these unfortunate occurrences I had a lovely time and met some lovely people. (Whom all seemed too tall, too beautiful, and too successful btw – which is a purely objective statement and definitely not based on my 5′2” stature.) It was at Temple Nightclub, which is a “green nightclub” combining cutting edge technology and ancient philosophy. I am intrigued.

Digital Summer showcased a few different products, but I was most interested in Eye-Fi, a memory card that sends images and video wirelessly from your camera. I’m syked about Eye-Fi. I learned about their technology awhile ago and was hoping to connect with them about a possible partnership for my project. I met the founder, Ziv Gillat, a jolly and enthusiastic man who seemed genuinely interested in my project — and we will be talking soon. Crossing my fingers.

I believe due to my elaborate beaded dangly African necklace that I purchased for a couple of dollars at a garage sale; a few different people asked me if I was in the fashion show, while none offered their number or dinner — (why !@%&*? San Francisco why?) I will still consider this a compliment.

You might be wondering when the glam came in: look at this eye-candy below.

In my opinion at approximately 10:30 pm on the runway, a surprisingly handsome supermodel look-a-like, gracefully and without pretension won the glamorous award.

Right when DJ. Mrs. Blythe started to rock and people began to loosen up I really didn’t want to leave… but alas I reached my 2 drink max and it was a school night. So I was off. Yet I’m still confused on how this avant-garde, indy, artsy, non-profit gal could have such a smashingly good time at an event that could be compared to a hip and glitzy touring roadshow. Apparently fashion, technology, and photography is dangerous and seductive combo for this small town San Francisco Native.

Gott sei Dank

I stumbled upon the Eye-Fi Geo on a gadget site that I frequent. It is a 2Gb SD card for your camera which uses GPS triangulation to Geo-Tag your pictures. In non-nerd this means “I just took me a picture in Germany uh-huh…ahh snap dawg! My computer says I took this picture in Germany dawg!”

This got me thinking, that from my experience with digital photography, most cameras never leave the house. Mind you, this information comes mostly from MySpace browsing.

I would submit to the Eye-Fi company that these cards should be quite precise. I have included some mock-ups and illustrations showing the desired operation:

This table shows a picture, next to its geo-tagged information.

This level of GPS accuracy is necessary for a successful product.

Sounds cool doesn’t it? Now image being able to do that and having all the photos “geotagged” too. Well, now you can with the Eye-Fi Wireless SD card. Found exclusively through Apple online or retail stores, this 2 GB SD card slips into your digital camera and not only adds Wi-Fi capability to your camera, it automatically “geotags” all your pictures. If you didn’t know, geotagging means the location of where the photo was taken is stored along with the photo itself. Upload the pictures to Apple’s iPhoto software, you can organize by and see where the pictures were taken. Geotagging with Eye-Fi is accomplished through WiFi triangulation which isn’t as great as full GPS but it’s close. The Eye-Fi Geo is sold exclusively through Apple and is priced at $59.99.

I’ve always been tempted to try out an Eye-Fi SD flash memory card, which allows you to wirele

I’ve always been tempted to try out an Eye-Fi SD flash memory card, which allows you to wirelessly upload photos directly from your camera to a nearby Mac or PC on the same network. Perhaps a bit anachronistically, since they seem to be far and away the leading digital memory format, but I don’t actually have a camera that uses SD. What with the price of point-and-shoots these days, I may soon rectify that situation, and Apple’s (s aapl) just given me another incentive.

As of today, Apple Stores (online and retail) will be the exclusive distributor of the brand new Eye-Fi Geo 2GB SD card. As its name implies, it will allow you to geotag your photos in addition to transferring them wirelessly to your computer. The new geotagging feature will allow you to use the Places feature in iPhoto ‘09 by including metadata with every picture taken on the card about where it was shot.

Out of the box, the iPhone supports geotagging, but it isn’t yet a feature often included in most consumer digital cameras. The limited availability of the Eye-Fi Geo suggests that the reason why is that Apple is the only consumer photo library application to foreground geotagging capabilities. If you’d rather not pay a premium for the fancy new card, which costs $60 and only offers 2GB of storage, you can always manually enter location information into iPhoto after you’ve uploaded your photos.

In addition to geotagging, the Eye-Fi Geo offers the option to upload directly to MobileMe galleries or to various other social-networking sites, but for an additional $10 fee, which presumably activates a built-in software feature. I’ve yet to really use the geotagging features of iPhoto, but this card, and the added convenience of wireless uploading, has me mighty tempted to give it a try. Anyone picking one up and eager to share their impressions?

When I finally bought an Eye-Fi card, I thought it was going to be super cool, because I would be able to dump pictures from the camera to my laptop without needing to mess with card readers or USB cables. Unfortunately it didn’t work out as planned. Firstly, it didn’t handle file types other than JPEGs (I think with the firmware updates that have been released, Eye-Fi does handle RAW files, too, but don’t take my word for it). Secondly, you couldn’t choose which pictures to send to the computer, or when you could upload them. You basically were uploading whatever you shot after you put the Eye-Fi in the camera and started shooting. If you were out shooting with the Eye-Fi card away from an AP and/or your home WiFi and computer, you couldn’t go back and select the pictures you took after you got back home. Thirdly, you had to set up wireless APs beforehand; you couldn’t just scan for and use any old WiFi AP available (again this may or may not be addressed now by new firmware updates) on the fly. And the worst part was that you couldn’t turn off wireless scanning if you knew you wouldn’t be in range of an open AP or knew you didn’t want to use wireless uploading for some reason. I didn’t think about this when I went to this year’s Chicago auto show and realized that my LX3’s battery had died in about 15 or 20 minutes, even though I fully charged it the night before. Luckily I had another battery and a different SD card to use. At that point, I stopped using the Eye-Fi altogether.

Now, it wasn’t exactly that incident that soured me on the Eye-Fi, though it was a big contributor. Also, many of the limitations with the Eye-Fi result from the functionality being embedded in the card, not the camera. So of course I know there’s a limit to what the Eye-Fi can do, given its form factor and how it was originally designed to work. Some of the issues I mentioned have been addressed by firmware updates, and sometime in the near future I’ll revisit my Eye-Fi and see what I can and can’t do with it. I’d be happy to retract all of my gripes if I find out they’ve all been fixed!

Actually, the main issue for me is that I normally like to edit my pictures before posting them online. Mobile-wise, I really liked being able to take pictures with my Sony Ericsson P1i, then do some rudimentary editing with the built-in photo editing software. I did some photo editing on my Nokia N95, but being limited to using the joystick to do editing, and the limitations of the app itself meant that I didn’t really use it much. Processing photos was better on the P1i because of the touchscreen. Also, I could optionally pen annotations right onto the photo. I continued to do mobile photo editing with my iPhone. At first the editing apps that showed up in the App Store were pretty useless for me — face melting, adding silly frames and cutesy little stamps. But eventually the category exploded and soon there were a ton of different photo processing apps, from utilitarian to whimsical, that piqued my interest. I check that category from time to time for new apps to try. I think it’s pretty cool how people have come up with some genuinely creative photo apps for the iPhone.

I’ve posted before that I have a couple pet photo editing apps that I love to use on the iPhone — Photogene and Tiffen’s Photo fx. Photogene is more like a Photoshop-type editor, whereas Photo fx applies various filters to your picture. Cropping was recently added to Photo fx, so if all you need to do before applying some filters is to crop the picture, you can do it all within Photo fx. Anyway, the “problem” with this setup is that the iPhone’s camera is not as good as my favorite P&S — the LX3 — or my D90. The iPhone is fine for moblog snapshots, but if I want to upload pictures from my other cameras, I have to wait until I’m home, sift through the pictures on the card, copy over the ones I want to edit, edit them, add title, description, and tags, and then upload them. Or, do this on the go with my laptop and hope I can connect to a WiFi AP somewhere because I don’t yet have a MiFi or some other method to tether my laptop to a mobile broadband account.

Perhaps you already know where this is going: my ultimate wireless picture-taking and uploading setup would be to take pictures with my LX3, D90 or any other digital camera, then wirelessly transfer certain pictures to some mobile device that would allow me to edit the picture, add metadata, then upload it. Alternatively I could do the editing in-camera (both the LX3 and D90 seem to have some rather decent in-camera editing tools) and then just use the mobile device’s data connection to upload to Flickr or elsewhere. I envision a couple different scenarios to accomplish this:

  1. A device like an Eye-Fi or some other dongle connected to the camera communicates with my iPhone and either lets me copy the picture over to edit on the iPhone, or I edit the picture beforehand in-camera. Then I use a photo uploader app on the iPhone to upload the picture to Flickr or wherever else via the iPhone’s 3G or WiFi connection. For the briefest of moments, I thought perhaps that was what Eye-Fi’s iPhone app was going to enable. How sorely disappointed I was when I found out it was basically an uploader like Flickit (my Flickr uploader of choice on the iPhone) for pictures taken with the iPhone. WHAT? *facepalm*

I understand that the Eye-Fi uploader could have been restricted by the iPhone’s SDK somehow, but it would’ve been awesome if Eye-Fi could’ve worked out a deal with Apple to implement the type of uploader I described. Can you imagine how many people would consider the iPhone if it could act as a mobile broadband gateway for any camera using an Eye-Fi card? What up, Eye-Fi? Apple?

  2. A mobile device such as the mythical (but hopefully soon-to-be real?) Mac tablet would be even better than a smartphone in this situation because it could have more processing power and more screen real estate in case I want to do more “serious” editing for a particular shot. Then I could feasibly use Photoshop Elements or something else to do the editing and have the regular arsenal of tools at my disposal. The touchscreen on the tablet would be like a Wacom tablet, enabling easier manipulation of the editing software with your fingers.

Before anybody balks at me, I realize that it may be possible to do scenario number 2 with a camera, an Eye-Fi, a laptop or netbook (or UMPC if you go that way *smirk*), and a MiFi. I’m guessing that you would be able to set up the Eye-Fi to see and use the WiFi AP that the MiFi provides (if that’s what the MiFi does; I’m guessing). That’s all well and good, but as I’ve realized when I’ve carried my MacBook with me along with all my camera gear to the yearly visit to the Detroit auto show, carrying all this stuff is friggin’ heavy! A device smaller and lighter than my MacBook is preferred. As an aside, I actually tried to use my N810 in a very kludgy setup with an external hard drive and a card reader to be a photo bin and/or a mobile photo uploader. The setup never really worked, unfortunately, and it was too unwieldy with all of the cords and external devices to be useful in a mobile setting anyway.

I would probably feel differently if I had a netbook with enough horsepower to run a photo editing app like Photoshop Elements. That might be what I’m missing, along with the MiFi. But I still am holding out for a Mac tablet as my dream device to be my photo editor and upload gateway. It might not work as well as I planned if the Mac tablet ends up basically being a large-screened iPhone, running the embedded version of OS X. In that case, the photo editing apps might be limited to those already found on the iPhone. That’s okay for the most part, since I try not to do that much editing beyond cropping and a little bit of levels and shadow/highlight fixes. But I would love something like a slate tablet computer that can do full Photoshop Elements or Aperture, if we’re talking about the ideal scenario. I really liked editing photos in slate mode on my Tablet PC back in the day. But I am primarily an OS X user now, hence my wish for a Mac tablet. YMMV.

I picked on the Eye-Fi a bit in my post, but really this semi-gripe applies to any of the cameras out there that have built-in WiFi or use dongles for WiFi connectivity. Often these cameras are locked into specific online services as well, which make them even less useful for my personal workflow. They never end up simply being a camera that connect to a wireless AP on the fly and upload pictures to any site.

One last thing: an alternate or parallel scenario is for the iPhone or some other cameraphone to have a decent enough camera so that I don’t have to use a separate camera. However, given the technical restrictions on sensors and such, I don’t see any cameraphones in at least the next 2 or 3 years being as good as my LX3 or similar creative P&S with regards to low-light capability, fine detail, or depth of field, nor would they be as good as a DSLR. However, an iPhone with at least a 5 or 6 MP camera, autofocus, macro mode, and modest optical zoom would be a great moblogging device. I almost went with one of Sony Ericsson’s Cybershot models before I decided on the iPhone 3G because they are more like cameras with phones shoehorned into them. I really like SE’s cameraphones, and as I mentioned in a previous post, the Satio is a phone I’m keeping an eye on. But I’m so invested now in the iPhone and its apps (and iTunes) that it would take a pretty spectacular phone to pry me away from the iPhone family.
