Blue: Older Calibrator. Red: Newer Calibrator

The graph above illustrates this phenomenon. At first glance it would be easy to wonder whether you were somehow “losing gamut” with your newer calibration device.

The reality of the situation is quite different. Both the older and newer calibrators may produce nearly identical results on easy-to-read screen types, but on wide gamut displays or more difficult-to-measure screen types, the newer model is likely to produce more accurate results. These improved results most often mean a reduction in the measure of saturation of the display primaries, especially the green primary, and to a lesser extent the red primary.

This means that the “smaller” gamut being seen when comparing the gamuts of the older and newer display profiles actually indicates a more accurate measurement of the screen. In addition, defining the primaries as less-saturated has the counter-intuitive result of showing colors as more saturated on screen, instead of less.

So if comparisons between your older and newer display calibration tools produces this type of result, rest assured that you are not “losing gamut” but in fact getting both more saturated, and more accurate, color with the newer product.

Well-known contemporary artists from the U.S. and Mexico are unveiling original works of art inspired by the futuristic storyline of  Deus Ex: Human Revolution on 29 July, 2011 at NYC’s Wooster Street Social Club (yes, the same SoHo tattoo parlor where NY Ink is being filmed). Artists including 3rassiere, Eyeone, Jeremy Fish, Estevan Oriol, N8 Van Dyke, Sam Flores, Rico Deniro, Jorge Alderete and Robert Abeyta, Jr. among others will display poster-like images exploring the pros and cons of human augmentation.

The exhibit will run through 7 August, 2011. Proceeds will benefit art education in schools.

New CYCLE LA VIA bike mural on Sunset - photo by Colleen Corcoran

It’s already been covered in Will Campbell’s [sic], dudeonabike, Biking in L.A., and Streetsblog, and making its way around facebook, but you heard it here sixth! There’s a new CicLAvia mural in town. It’s in Silver Lake, on the south side of Sunset Boulevard, just west of Benton Way.  For a panoramic shot of the entire mural, see this image by Will Campbell (who also shot this great CicLAvia Video.)

The mural is by Caché, EyeOne and Skypager. In addition to large lettering stating CYCLE LA VIA, it depicts various animal cyclists and upraised U-locks. It’s similar to the, also by EyeOne and Caché, Ride On mural (No.9 here) at the Hel-Mel Bicycle District.

If you look closely, you can spot two plaques that pre-date the mural by 71 years. Here’s a close-up of one:

Painted over plaque reads: BUILT BY UNITED STATES WORK PROJECTS ADMINISTRATION 1940

These walls were built during the economic stimulus programs of the Great Depression. There are similar plaques on other ’30s and ’40s construction projects, including the Pasadena Avenue Bridge and Marmion Way Bridge – both over the Arroyo Seco.

Friday night was the opening for the Odds & Ends art show over at Tradition. The show will be running for the next month so if you couldn’t make it out, try and stop by!!! I got a chance to talk to Patrick and Eyeone.. as well hang out with some friends (new and old) and have A LOT of good laughs. Patrick’s Go Getters (Break Yourself) foam hands were a big hit in YELLOW but I think I did see a girl cop a pink one. A limited zine was also out so I hope if you made it out you were able to pick one up.

Patrick said that one of the inspirations behind this painting came from seeing a kid just drinking a liter of soda. It is so sad to me these days how kids can just down soda, junk food, and fast food. I remember when I was younger it was a TREAT to be able to have a Mc D kids meal! Girls toy please.

My favorite part about Eyeone’s collection is the brick. He actually has a collection of about 10 and these aren’t just ANY bricks. They are all special in their own right picked by him based on history as they were what originally built our cities (they’re old, worn, and just have a story that goes along with them). The brick he is pictured with below is from Griffith Park.

street art is by far one of my favorite parts of life in LA. we’re really lucky to live in a place where in so many areas of town you get the chance to see some really beautiful work without having to pay entry into a museum. my hood (the los feliz-silver lake-echo park area) is a major repository of this art, and whenever i get a chance i take pics of it.  i’ve finally started to put some of those pics on flickr here, but i still have a lot more to upload.
