A few things have changed since this photo was taken of the Sheikh Zayed Road in late 1980s/early 1990s.

A smidgen of development has taken place:

However, at least one thing remains stubbornly unchanged. Just across the road from the Burj Dubai and ‘the most prestigious square mile on earth’, the “Toyota Building” still stands defiantly, like a crotchety and deteriorating old relative who refuses to go quietly.

According to Peyman Younes Parham, director of marketing and corporate communications at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, the building will not be immediately affected by the infrastructure
development.

“It’s not in our plan to remove this building,” he said. “Every building has its lifespan, but this one is privately owned and it will be demolished at the owner’s discretion.”

Veeru Taman, who works in the real estate division of Nasser Rashid Lootah Group, said there were no immediate plans to demolish the building.

It is testimony to the sheer insanity of the real estate boom in Dubai that amidst all the frenzy; the mushrooming land prices; the man-made islands; and the plans to pave over half the desert, no-one got round to redeveloping an eye-sore located on the city’s main motorway and in the middle of one of the main business districts. Somehow it remains untouchable, with the new interchange being painstakingly built around this obstinate lump of concrete.

I am intrigued as to why this building has remained sacrosanct when so many other buildings and areas have been deemed expendable (Chicago Beach Village, Dubai Country Club etc.). Answers on a postcard please…

Here’s my next newspaper column. The photo at right illustrates, unfortunately, what has happened in a few rare instances when a business attempts to circumvent Vermont’s no-billboards law.

The state of Vermont recently celebrated a major anniversary, and it had nothing to do with the construction of a professional sports arena, subdivision, airport or other land-consuming project.

Vermont, in 1968, said “no” to the placement – anywhere in the Green Mountain State – of new billboards, those oftentimes mammoth placards atop steel posts that scream to passing motorists, urging them to buy this product or that service.

Although several states have followed Vermont’s lead, the Green Mountain State was the first to outlaw billboards and enact a set of stringent rules regulating all kinds of other signage. The 1968 law prohibits privately owned, off-premise signs and restricts the size, height, and distance from roads of said signs. Signs also aren’t allowed to have moving parts or flashing lights. All signs are forbidden on the legal right-of-way. Communities may adopt laws more stringent than the state’s.

Proponents of Vermont’s billboard law point with pride to the state’s scenic, uncluttered roadsides as a key attraction for visitors, especially the thousands-upon-thousands of “leaf-peepers” who visit Vermont to view the bright foliage of autumn. (These same roadsides benefit from the anti-litter campaign launched when the state began requiring sellers of many canned and bottled beverages to pay a 5-cent deposit per container to customers returning them.)

“Whereas, billboards and other forms of outdoor advertising are becoming a matter of increasing concern to many residents . . .”

So began the joint resolution of the Vermont State Assembly in 1967, when it created the Committee to Study Outdoor Advertising, which included future U.S. Sen. Jim Jeffords. It held public hearings, conducted research and reviewed the relevant law on outdoor advertising.

The committee’s report, in part, stated: “Our scenic resources . . . have contributed much to our economic development by attracting tourists, . . . residents, and new industries and cultural facilities. . . .[T]he scattering of outdoor advertising throughout the state is detrimental to the preservation of these resources, and consequently to the economic base of the state.”

So, in the following year, Vermont prohibited new billboards and provided an amortization period of five years to remove existing billboards. By 1974, Vermont had felled its last billboard.

In 1997, the state commissioned an independent study of outdoor advertising to review the success of the billboard ban and to assess other forms of advertising. Public opinion polls and studies echoed the 1967 report. The study stated that traveler information solutions must maintain Vermont’s quality environment, continue to prohibit billboards, and prevent sign clutter.

Businesses still receive the state government’s help through the posting of small chest-high signs devoid of accouterments which simply identify its name and travel distance.

Some Googling turned up choice statements like this one attributed to former Colorado Gov. Richard Lamm: “Billboards contribute a minuscule amount to our economic well-being, but they impose a high cost. They detract from Colorado’s attractiveness to tourists and from the pleasant surroundings for our residents.”

At the municipal level, more than 700 communities nationwide prohibit the construction of new billboards. Why? Because billboard control improves community character and quality of life – both of which directly impact local economies. In fact, despite billboard industry claims to the contrary, communities and states that enact tough billboard controls have actually enjoyed strong economic growth (the current recission aside).

While some signs are necessary to provide directions to travelers, most billboards merely contribute to visual clutter – also known as “blight.” For example, on one section of road in Hampton, Va. (and I have driven this very stretch), there were so many signs that a driver going 45 miles per hour would need to read 1,363 words per minutes just to understand all the information. That is five times the normal reading speed of a stationary person.

The billboard industry often claims that controlling outdoor advertising will, over time, create economic ghost towns. In fact, the undeniable aesthetic improvements to a community that come from controlling billboards actually helps its economy, notes Scenic America, a non-profit organization founded, in part, on the strength of Lady Bird Johnson’s campaign to beautify America’s roadsides.

Billboards are both a symptom and cause of urban blight. And the presence of fewer signs actually signals a community’s economic health.

Mull this tidbit from Scenic America: Communities can thrive without billboards, because most billboards have no connection to the local economy. They advertise either national brands or out-of-state products and services . . . Billboard industry naysayers claim that businesses such as gas stations and eating and drinking establishments would be financially hurt by reducing or eliminating their outdoor ads. On the contrary, in cities and towns such as Williamsburg, Va., Raleigh, N.C., and Houston the period following implementation of stricter billboard controls and/or bans on new billboard construction was marked by steady growth of sales in those industries.

Consider what happened in Raleigh: Sales for eating and drinking establishments rose from $243 million in 1989, before billboard control, to $307 million in 1992, after controls were introduced, a rise of about 20 percent.

Billboard control is especially key for communities that depend on tourism. According to the Travel Industry Association of America, travelers spent $541 billion nationwide in 1999. The President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors reported that “natural beauty” was the most important criteria for adults choosing a site for outdoor recreation. “The more a community does to enhance its unique natural, scenic, historic, and architectural assets, the more tourists it attracts.”

Back to the scenic vistas of Vermont: When the Green Mountain State took down its last billboard in 1975, the state’s tourism revenues increased by more than 50 percent in the following three years. The president of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce noted at the time: “Although there was some initial sensitivity that removing billboards might hurt tourism, it has had the opposite effect. Tourism is up for all businesses large and small.”

Many prime tourist nations prohibit new billboard construction even as their tourism revenues keep rising. The long list includes Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.; Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, N.C.; South Padre Island, Texas; Santa Fe, N.M.; Aspen and Boulder, Colorado; and Portland, Oregon.

Vermont is hardly alone at banning billboards statewide. The others include Hawaii and Maine and each continues drawing people from around the world to view their scenic wonders.

Remember these lessons from elsewhere the next time you’re motoring along a well-traveled Pennsylvania highway.

Why, it’s more loveliness from one of my favorite groups of people. Check my previous post on this topic for background.

Four stories next to a one story house. It just boggles the mind… One amusing note is that immediately behind this house is a large public school. Did they really think that someone was going to shell out this kind of money to live next door to an inner-city Atlanta public school? Busses coming and going all the time? I guess in their quest for mo money, they didn’t think too much.

Well okay the economy is in the crapper. Anyone who has paid attention for the last 30 years knew this was coming. While I may feel sympathy for a lot of folks, for Atlanta real estate developers who are feeling the economy I have nothing but millions of LMAO’s.

You people have TRASHED this city. You have taken neighborhoods with character and turned them into eyesores. You have removed too many valuable trees that make this city worth living in. All because you want you some money. Well when you go financially bankrupt (you’re already morally bankrupt), just remember this – you deserve it.

And lets be clear – there are SOME, yes a handful of, developers who give a shit about their impact, and about how their “product” affects the character of the neighborhood. I am not referring to those developers. This rant is about you greedy ones with no class who construct uncharismatic product from inferior materials without regard to your neighbor.

Here’s an example of what I am talking about. Case study #1:

“My 1-story brick duplex is not fulfilling my greedy desire for ridiculous amounts of money, so I’ll tear it down and put up a 4-story, 2-unit structure that covers 90% of the surface area of the lot, so I can get me MO CASH.”

Fuck the neighbors - I want money

Look at this thing. 4-stories next to a 1-story house. Unacceptable. Now, look at what is on the other side of the 4-story monstrosity – why, it’s another 1-story house!

Striking

You are looking to the east in the photos.

And here’s what really gets me about this kind of thing. The 1-story house on the north side is now going to pay higher heating bills in the winter because his neighbor has completely blocked out his southfacing sun. Why is this considered acceptable? And who issued a permit for such a thing?

Oh noes! It seems that we’ve upset Reader Arundel with our obsessive-compulsive need to repeat the same or similar photographic images over and over! Here’s what Arundel wrote:

Hi. I forget where I first came across your blog, but I enjoy your posts and insights.
Thank you.

However, this strange thing of repeating the same picture fifteen times in a post is a damned eyesore, an affectation that beats the casual reader over the head with the same repeated image in such a distracting way it’s impossible to concentrate on what you’re saying.

Repeating the same photo over and over implies there’s some importance to the image- believe me, once is enough. We’re not stupid. Repeating it so pointlessly is irksome.

I hope you keep writing insightful things. But readers have to work to find them between the same goddamn picture, breaking up the text for no reason.

Best to you.

Umm, well, ha ha, thank you for reading and sending in that lovely comment, Arundel. We hope you’ll write more, because it’s great for laffs! And srsly, this post is just for you, because it only has one picture (albeit from the archives!). Best to you, too.

Today I got a nice surprise from a small but cool Facebook group, called I ♥ to match. Even it’s italian I almost can understand everything : ) Many Thanks Roberta, you rock!

I was lamenting the loss of ‘the old fire’ here the other day, so I thought that I’d take time out t

I was lamenting the loss of ‘the old fire’ here the other day, so I thought that I’d take time out to try and blog a little in ‘the old style’; less considered, less from the comfort of home, and little more drunken.

I’m sitting about in a pub waiting about for a mate to turn up, and it seems like the perfect opportunity to knock out a few words.

Trouble is, what to write about? With the movement into the public service the old love of lambasting political figures has disappeared (to be honest, I’ve actually become extremely cynical about the whole thing), and I’ve promise myself not to become one of those expectant fathers who spend the better part of their time talking about their impending lifestyle change.

So… I’ll leave it at that.

NO! WAIT!

SINK the HIKITIA

God, I’ve been wanting to write this post for ages. Every Sunday we walk past this damn tub on the way to the Waitangi Park Markets, and it’s been making me increasingly angry.

So I need to ask the question, why in the hell is this thing sitting rusting in our harbour?

I’ve a sneaking suspicion that it is linked somehow to the sentiment people have for the Bucket Fountain. It’s a horrible object that people secretly hate, but pretend they love because it’s been around *forever*, and therefore deserves to be spoken about in slightly reverential tones. And I can accept that. Except… Wellingtonians have only had access to the waterfront for a few years. I do not remember people getting excited about this wreck when I lived here in the 1990s for example. This suggests that the attachment much be recent.

But WHY? Damn this thing is ugly. It’s a great, big, floating, piece, of, crap.

I can also accept the argument that it’s much loved by youngsters. And who wouldn’t love a giant antique boat covered in rusty sharp edges to play on when they’re a wee tacker?

The trouble is, the youngsters aren’t actually allowed on it. Why? Because it’s some kind of hazard. And I agree. It is a big, barnacle and mussel-covered hazard that should be taken out of the water and put into a park where it can be maintained and have kids climb all over it. That, or dynamited.

I’m inclined to think the latter would be better.

Now I know that the bleeding-heart historical preservation societies out there would like to keep this massive pile of crap right there in the harbour because, well, because it’s “historical”. Oh, and because it’s a “working boat”. To which I say, “bullshit it’s a working boat. In two years the bastard has barely moved. If it was working it would have had it’s sorry arse performance-managed out the goddamn door and down to Work and Income to slowly molder and fret about the glory days.”

Actually… Looking at the state of the old crapper, this might have already happened. Doesn’t work. Sits in one spot for ages. I covered in warning signs. Never gets out and about. Is obsolete technology and not useful.

You do the math.

So join with me in shouting, SINK THE HIKIT!A! And do Wellington a big favour. If Kerry can’t do anything else more useful than build freaking roads, at least she can make a few pedestrians safer from falling iron.

Hi Eyesore Friends!

About two months ago, the people at Oxfam got in touch with me to ask if I’d be interested in making a non-profit eyesore to promote OXFAM. I immediately said yes and told them that I would love to make an eyesore to help their cause. So, two months later, I am very happy to tell you that, starting today, the new OXFAM eyesore has been released in collaboration with this NGO.
This eyesore in particular serves as a new way to increase our awareness little by little about the problems that exist today, and I invite you to help bring us all together by joining the Facebook OXFAM group. As you may already know, it’s free!!! : )

The initiative is really innovative and we, as well as the Oxfam team, are very happy with the results so far. I hope you all like the OXFAM eyesore and can send it to all of your friends. In order to make it easier to find the eyesore, we’ve added a new category called “Help the World“, where I hope to add many more eyesores in the near future to help all the causes that we can.

An Eyesore farewell to all!!!
Yours truly,

<!–<fb:multi-friend-selector actiontext=”" rows=”5″/>–>
<fb:multi-friend-selector condensed=”true”/>
<fb:request-form-submit />

Apa, ja m’he desfogat!
