Recently, Elgato released EyeTV for the iPhone (AppStore Link). At a cost of $4.99, its marketing blurb offers the following functionality:

With the EyeTV app, you can watch, record, and enjoy live and recorded TV on your iPhone or iPod touch. At last, you don‘t have to leave all your great TV shows at home; the EyeTV app puts the power of award-winning EyeTV in the palm of your hand.

The EyeTV app accesses EyeTV running on your Mac at home to deliver these great features to your iPhone:

• Watch live TV and change channels anywhere (Wi-Fi connection required)
• Watch your EyeTV recordings
• Browse the comprehensive Program Guide
• Start recordings back home on your Mac immediately or schedule them for later
• View and edit your recording schedules

How Does it Measure Up?

Now that we know the promises, how does the functionality work in practise and does it live up to the hype? To set the picture accurately; my set up is a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo Mac mini with 2GB of RAM and two Elgato Digital USB Tuner sticks. This is hooked up to an Airport Express, which extends my existing wireless connection from another room. Between myself and my wife, we have an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 2nd Gen, so I will be testing EyeTV on all three looking for differences.

Setting Up and Preparing

After downloading the EyeTV app from iTunes and installing onto my three iDevices, I had to update EyeTV to version 3.2 on my Mac mini by simply checking for updates. Once updated, switching on iPhone streaming was a simple option in the preferences.

There is also functionality for using Elgato’s servers to allow connecting to your EyeTV device from outside your wireless network called “My EyeTV.” This works in a similar manner to Apple’s “Back To My Mac” functionality of MobileMe and requires UPnP support between your EyeTV host and your router. Because I have an AirPort Express extended network, UPnP didn’t work — but I was able to manually configure a port forwarding rule in my router on port 2170 to make the service work.

Advanced options allow you to require a passcode to connecting a device and the option to automatically convert recordings into a format suitable for streaming at a later time. While Live TV does not need to be prepared, recorded content does.

You can however, also prepare recordings manually, on a case-by-case basis.

After starting the iPhone app and entering my “My EyeTV” details, I get the option of connecting via Wi-Fi (on the bottom) and via “My EyeTV” (on top). When connected to my local wireless, the “My EyeTV” connection did not work (of course you wouldn’t want to do this, but the software doesn’t detect this in any way).

Selecting the local Wi-Fi option connects quickly and presents the app’s main menu.

Watching Live TV

Selecting LiveTV gives a list of channels and what is currently showing.

Clicking on the green icon on the right displays the upcoming programs on that channel.

I can then select the current show to get a summary and an option to “Watch Now.”

This process then takes about 20 seconds of processing and streaming before I get picture and sound, which is smooth and crisp and just as one would expect.

Tapping on the screen brings up the controls which allow pausing, rewinding 30 seconds (and jumping back to the live stream), a volume control and resizing between widescreen (just like in the iPod app).

Pressing the ‘gear’ icon displayed in the top right of the channel listing presents a bandwidth/quality settings screen to enable you to tweak the size of the stream. This worked well and allows you to find the right setting for your moment. The lowest setting is about equal to the early days of You Tube while the highest setting is flawless.

Watching Recordings

Pressing the recordings menu gives you a sub menu to narrow down searching for an existing recording.

Selecting an option (such as Library) gives a list of individual recordings.

While there is no way to search directly for a recording, you can sort the list by a number of means.

Unlike live TV, when watching a recording you get full track scrubbing navigation, not just ‘back 30 seconds.’

The quality of recordings is not configurable like LiveTV is, it depends on the quality options you selected for ‘preparing recordings’ on your Mac. Cellular quality is very low and like You Tube, but if you’re on wireless (or on a jailbroken phone with 3G Un-Restrictor) you get full quality.

Schedules

Schedules let you see what upcoming recordings you have scheduled.

All you can do here is browse and remove an item from the schedule.

Guide

The Guide gives you access to the full electronic TV guide available in your Mac’s EyeTV software, this is exactly the same as when browsing the guide for Live TV, except instead of an option to “Watch Now,” the button is “Record,” which will add the show to your recording schedule.

The Verdict

There is no noticeable speed differences with performance between the iPhone 3G, iPod touch 2nd Gen or the iPhone 3GS. The bottleneck here is available bandwidth and the speed of the host computer. Generally, the functionality works as advertised, however there are some limitations to be aware of, and some version 1.0 bugs that need to be squashed.

• Live streaming does not work on 3G, requires Wi-Fi — thanks AT&T (s att), for affecting my functionality in Australia. However, on a jailbroken phone, I was able to successfully use 3G Unrestrictor to fool EyeTV into thinking it was on Wi-Fi, thus allowing it to work. This worked at a much higher quality than I expected and was also very smooth. Well worth the $2.99 it costs for 3G Unrestrictor.
• Streaming only supports one device at a time. Connecting with my iPhone and watching a live TV stream, then connecting with my iPod touch works, but when actually selecting a channel to view on the iPod touch, it drops the stream for the iPhone. This is probably fair enough as one stream is pretty CPU intensive as it is.
• When both recording a show and streaming live TV, I had two instances of the host application crash, requiring a full EyeTV restart to allow connections again.
• When testing across the Internet while on my work’s wireless, or on 3G, I found my iPhone’s EyeTV app constantly crashing whenever it tried to connect. This seemed to be an issue with the EyeConnect helper software on my Mac mini, which needed to be restarted by turning EyeTV sharing off and on again in my Mac mini.
• When stopping a live or recorded stream, the CPU usage on the host computer often stays high for 5-10 minutes. It looks like its continuing to stream data out and didn’t get the ’stop’ message from the iPhone. This does seem to eventually time out and really isn’t a big problem unless the CPU usage causes you a problem.
• It would be a nice option to be able to ‘prepare’ a recording for the iPhone remotely.

Once Elgato gets a software update out for both ends of the solution (iPhone and OS X) to fix the crash bugs and bring stability to the software, this will be absolutely great. Until then, it’s a bit of hit and miss, it may work fine or it may need someone to be at your computer to restart software before it works, which defeats the purpose. Elgato is working hard on its forums to replicate user’s issues and make this stable, so its a bright future ahead.

As we reported just yesterday, Apple (s aapl) didn’t take too kindly to El Gato’s “accidental” inclusion of a workaround to enable 3G streaming of live TV on the iPhone using its EyeTV app. The app, combined with an EyeTV USB Mac TV tuner, allows users to stream that content from their computer. I say allows, not allowed, because it’s now back in the App Store for $4.99.

For those who missed the reason why the app was pulled in the first place, El Gato had “accidentally left in” a feature whereby if you click the warning window that tells you Wi-Fi is required for live TV playback, instead of the “OK” button in the window, the dialog would close and streaming would occur over 3G anyway.

El Gato revealed that it had already resubmitted a fixed version when the problem was discovered, and that version has today been approved by Apple and is available for download. This time around, clicking the dialog box has no effect.

Whether it was an Easter egg, meant to pass undetected through Apple’s censors (which seems unlikely, given how easy it was to activate), or whether it was just an accident, the incident reveals that despite AT&T’s recent announcement that voice calls would now be allowed over 3G, that doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all with all types of content.

I still think this needs looking into by a regulatory body. Data is data, and if wireless customers are paying not-insignificant fees in order to be able to use data on their cell phones, they should have the right to choose the nature of that traffic. My plan covers 6GB per month. Who’s to say I don’t want to use five of that on streaming video? I can see cutting me off once I exceed my limit, since I might then be causing undue strain on your network, but if you’ve assigned me 6GB, let me use that however I see fit.

At least Apple is being relatively understanding about the whole thing. It could easily have barred EyeTV from the app store for an extended period, or altogether, in order to punish what could easily be seen an a purposeful attempt to side-step App Store requirements. Instead, it acted quickly when a fix was issued and reintroduced in the app with very little delay following its removal. I think this especially points to the fact that AT&T is really still the one to blame in cases like this.

Although El Gato’s EyeTV app has been able to stream content over AT&T’s (s att) seemingly fragile 3G network since last month, it wasn’t until this past weekend that people were talking about it. That talk, at Gizmodo, was followed by swift and decisive action by Apple (s aapl). EyeTV is no more at the App Store.

For those who don’t know, the EyeTV app accesses content from an EyeTV, the company’s television recording device, attached to a Mac, and sends it to an iPhone. As the pictured warning from the app clearly states, a Wi-Fi connection is required. However, tapping the warning text instead of the “OK” button enables streaming over a cellular connection.

Unfortunately, that’s a violation of AT&T’s terms of service in the U.S. and Apple’s policy everywhere else. Just last month, another video streaming app, SlingPlayer, was released in Europe, still shackled to Wi-Fi only. Sad, but those are the rules, which makes you wonder why El Gato broke them. According to Julio Ojeda-Zapata of Your Tech Blog, El Gato says “test code” was “accidentally left in the EyeTV app.” El Gato has already resubmitted a version of the EyeTV app without the offending code.

Personally, I applaud El Gato for its user-friendly sloppiness. The real error here is allowing telecommunication companies to regulate content on any network.

Live-Fernsehen (hier das ORF-Programm TW1) über das Orange-A 3G-Netz

Ostereier mitten im Oktober! Wie wir vor ein paar Tagen mit allen Details und Demo-Video berichteten, ist die App EyeTV im App Store erschienen. Electricpig und MacRumors haben entdeckt, dass in dem Programm eine wichtige Funktion versteckt ist: “Live-Fernsehen” ist nämlich auch über das 3G-Netz möglich! Und zwar mit einem klitzekleinen und ganz & gar undokumentierten Trick, allerdings nur für jene, die rechtzeitig eingekauft haben.

Neuigkeiten: Nach einigem Hin und Her ist EyeTV wieder erhältlich (siehe Aktualisierungen dieses Rossau-Artikels unten).

Von wegen..! Hier nicht "OK" berühren, sondern den Hinweistext direkt darüber!

Der Trick: Einfach normal über das Mobilfunknetz in Betrieb nehmen (Wi-Fi am iPhone für diesen Test abschalten), im iPhone-EyeTV auf “Live-Fernsehen” tapsen, dann einen Sender wählen, und wenn die Warnung erscheint (siehe Bildschirmfoto), nicht “OK” betätigen, sondern den Text mit dem Hinweis berühren!

Funktioniert einwandfrei! Super Bild und Stereo-Ton, sogar die Radio-FM-Sender von meinem EyeTV-Hybrid-Stick werden übertragen. Na, das ist doch mal richtig nett, oder? Das Delay beträgt zirka 30 Sekunden.

Das iPhone als vollwertiges und äußerst mobiles TV-Gerät mit Sonderausstattung wie Pause, Time-Shift, sehr komfortablem Video-/Radiorekorder und EPG!

Jetzt dürfen wir nur hoffen, dass Apple oder die Mobilfunk-Provider das nicht gleich wieder abstellen… Ein riskantes Manöver von Elgato, dem Hersteller der fabelhaften EyeTV-Produkte, diese Funktion an der hochoffiziellen und gestrengen App-Prüfungskommission vorbeizuschmuggeln. Die Kundschaft findet’s jedenfalls prima!

Ein gar köstliches Osterei!

Update (17. Oktober 2009, nur ein paar Stunden später)

Die Befürchtungen haben sich rascher bestätigt als vermutet. Leider ist der Zauber vorbei: EyeTV wurde von der Firma Apple in einer Nacht & Nebel-Aktion von Freitag auf Samstag aus allen App Stores weltweit ersatzlos samt User-Rezensionen entfernt! (Edit; kurzes Zwischen-Update: Die App ist schon wieder verfügbar! Siehe bitte nächstes Rossau-Artikel-Update. Ich lasse die folgenden Absätze aus Gründen der Informations-Historie dennoch stehen.)

Kleiner Trost für fleißige Rossau-Leser, die rasch zugeschlagen haben: Bestehende Installationen funktionieren weiterhin.

Dazu ein Artikel von Macworld UK: Apple pulls Elgato EyeTV app over backdoor 3G streaming. Elgato wird zitiert:

“Some test code that enabled live TV streaming over the cellular network was accidentally left in the the EyeTV App.  Apple requested that we remove the code since their agreement with AT&T does not allow redirecting TV signals over the cellular network.”

“The code was removed and a 1.0.1 version of the EyeTV app was submitted.  We expect EyeTV to return to the App Store when the 1.0.1 version is approved.”

Alles nur ein bedauerlicher Irrtum also, der Test-Code für TV-Streaming über das Mobilfunknetz sei versehentlich dringelassen worden, und der große U.S.-amerikanische iPhone-Vertragsprovider AT&T gestatte keine Weiterleitung von TV-Signalen über das Mobilfunk-Netzwerk, heißt es. (Was geht das uns hier in der Rossau an?)

Zum Verständnis vielleicht: Dort gibt es Tarife mit unlimitiertem Datenübertragungsvolumen, und wenn sich alle iPhone+EyeTV-User (die Benützer des Apple-Smartphones benötigen schon jetzt und ohne EyeTV insgesamt das Vierfache an Datenübertragungsvolumen wie “alle anderen Smartphone-User zusammen”) gleichzeitig über ihre zuhause aufgestellten Privat-Server (Mac + Elgato-Tuner) den Super Bowl ansehen, bricht womöglich das (ohnehin nicht als das beste bekannte) Mobilfunk-Datennetz inklusive Sprachtelefonie, SMS etc. zusammen; es könnte sich aber auch um rechtliche Probleme handeln.

Die nächste Version der Software EyeTV für iDevices werde – vom Code für 3G-Live-Fernsehen befreit – zur Verfügung stehen, sobald sie den Prüfungsprozess bei Apple durchlaufen habe, so die Aussage von Elgato via Macworld.

Ich werde übrigens bestimmt nicht auf die angekündigte Version 1.0.1 updaten. Ein solches Hintertürchen (Wiki) zum Auffinden von Ostereiern (Wiki) enthielt auch eine andere App, die vor ein paar Wochen sofort aus dem Angebot entfernt wurde, sie (ein Emulator, Wiki) enthielt einen vollwertigen Commodore-Interpreter, mit dem C64-Basic-Befehle ausgeführt werden konnten, was ebenfalls gegen die restriktiven Abmachungen zwischen Apple und Software-Entwicklern verstößt.

Jetzt nenne ich’s bald “Katz & Maus”-Phone. Inzwischen sollte man sich gut überlegen, ob man installierte iPhone-Software aktualisiert; einen ähnlichen Fall hatten wir vor kurzem mit der App iStat. Und auch die jailbreakenden Zeitgenossen können ein Liedchen davon singen (mit Jailbreak – hier unsere kurze Begriffserläuterung – ist übrigens 3G-Live-Fernsehen schon seit längerem möglich).

An alle, die für die von Apple soeben erfolgreich zensurierten EyeTV-Version 1.0.0 zu spät kommen: Gar so schlimm ist das nicht. Wenn iPhone oder iPod touch in irgendein Wi-Fi-Netz können, ist Live-TV über EyeTV seit je her offiziell möglich.

Weiters besteht nach wie vor (sobald die neu angekündigte Version erhältlich ist) die Möglichkeit, den (heimischen) digitalen EyeTV-Videorekorder am Mac (aus der Ferne) für eine Aufnahme zu programmieren; nach dem Ende der Sendung dauert es dann ungefähr die Hälfte der Aufnahme-Gesamtlaufzeit (MacBook Pro), bis sie vollautomatisch in das iPhone-Format konvertiert ist, und schon steht sie im iPhone/EyeTV-”Filmarchiv” zum Abruf zur Verfügung, und zwar auch über das 3G-Mobilfunknetz. Also “fast live”.

Für Live-Radio inklusive Rekorder gibt es ja schon länger die völlig kostenlose, nach wie vor hervorragend funktionierende und bei uns ausführlich beschriebene Lösung mit der App FStream; hier werden die aufgenommenen Sendungen zunächst direkt im iDevice abgelegt und kein Privat-Server ferngesteuert.

Und vielleicht kommt ja AT&T doch irgendwann mal zur Raison. Der Rest der Welt ohne (technisch drittklassige) Daten-Flatrate wird es zu danken wissen… Außerdem wird wieder mal gemunkelt, dass Apple die Bindung an einen exklusiven Provider pro Land (Österreich ist eine der wenigen Ausnahmen) lockern wird.

Aktueller Artikel bei Mac Rumors: iPhone on Verizon: ‘A Decision That is Exclusively in Apple’s Court’. Nachdem sich Konkurrent Verizon in sehenswerten TV-Werbespots über das iPhone und die lückenhafte 3G-Versorgung von AT&T lustig gemacht hat, kommt er als Belohnung für den Spott offenbar für die nächste iPhone-Generation in die nähere Auswahl (trotz anderer Mobilfunktechnik).

EyeTV ist wieder im App Store erhältlich! Zumindest im österreichischen und deutschen Apple-Software-Laden. Laut der Angaben in iTunes ist es Version 1.0.0, gleicher Preis wie vorher (3,99 €), also rasch zuschlagen! App Store-Link.

Zwischen-Update: Wenige Stunden später wurde Version 1.0.0 durch 1.0.1 – die neue Version enthält dieses versteckte Osterei nicht mehr – ersetzt. 1.0.0 ist leider nicht mehr erhältlich, siehe nächstes Rossau-Artikel-Update. Aus den gleichen Gründen wie vorher bleiben die folgenden Absätze stehen.

User berichten (MacUser.de-Thread), dass sie es seit ungefähr 9 Uhr MESZ kaufen können. Ich konnte keine Aktualisierung (würde sie ohnehin nicht installieren, s. o. u. u.) für meine zwei Wochen alte EyeTV-Installation in iTunes entdecken.

TotalApps.net berichtet (siehe 2. Update ebendort), dass es sich tatsächlich um Version 1.0.0 handelt (man hat dort die alte Installation gelöscht und die App nochmal gekauft), und dass sie seit etwa Mitternacht im Vereinigten Königreich verfügbar ist.

In internationalen Foren wird später bestätigt, dass die vormals zensurierte Fassung 1.0.0 mit funktionierendem Hintertür-Osterei offenbar allerorten wieder beschafft werden kann. Hier der entsprechende Thread im Forum bei MacRumors (englisch) mit einem Vergleich zu früheren und nicht unähnlichen Vorkommnissen bei einer Tethering-Software (NetShare). Ein paar Zitate daraus:

Ich persönlich enthalte mich jeden Kommentars zu diesem Theater, möchte kein Mitarbeiter in der Rechtsabteilung von Apple sein, und freue mich für alle, die (vorübergehend, siehe nächste Aktualisierung) wieder in den Genuss von bestausgestattetem “Live-Fernsehen” am iPhone über das Mobilfunknetz kommen können!

Wer das nicht kennt, sollte sich auf der bereits früher empfohlenen Elgato-Website umsehen. Besser können die überaus praktischen Features des digitalen Fernsehens auch abseits von Auflösung und Bitrate technisch nicht unterstützt werden, davon möge sich mancher riesige Kabel-TV-Provider in Wien mit seinem vergleichsweise ebenso fürchterlichen wie proprietären Philips/Thomson-Kastl (“MediaBox”, kann nicht mal DVDs brennen) eine sehr dicke Scheibe abschneiden.

Allein die bis ins letzte Detailchen durchdachten und geradezu verblüffend bedienungsfreundlichen Bequemlichkeiten dieser Produkte sind ein Grund, sich einen Mac anzuschaffen, obwohl Elgato offenbar zunehmend auch PCs unterstützt.

Ich komme ja selten so ins Schwärmen, aber diesmal ist es wirklich angebracht. Habe schon viele Digital-TV-Systeme getestet, Tuner von Elgato und die dazugehörige Software EyeTV gehören eindeutig zur absoluten Spitzenklasse! Langzeiterfahrung.

Ab sofort ist nur mehr die angekündigte und “fehlerbereinigte” (also ohne das Osterei mit Live-TV 3G-Streaming) Version 1.0.1 erhältlich; Usern, welche die App schon installiert haben, wird eine Aktualisierung angeboten. Wer die erwähnte Funktion erhalten möchte, sollte nicht aktualisieren! Die offiziellen Angaben laut iTunes:

Die aufgezählten Fehler sind hier bisher allesamt nicht aufgefallen – und deren Behebung verführt keineswegs zu einer Aktualisierung der Vorgängerversion 1.0.0 von EyeTV für iPhones mit dem versteckten Feature “Live-Fernsehen über 3G-Mobilfunknetzwerk”.

Bitrate-Einstellungen in EyeTV/iPhone

Noch kurz zum Thema Datenübertragungsrate (Wikipedia). In den “Live-TV Einstellungen” von EyeTV am iPhone oder iPod (Zahnradsymbol oben rechts in der Senderliste) kann die Bildqualität in weiten Grenzen von 80 bis 800 Kilobit pro Sekunde eingestellt werden (werksmäßig eingestellt: 320 kb/s).

Zum Vergleich: Gespräch in Telefonqualität (etwa 3,1 kHz Bandbreite) 64 Kilobit pro Sekunde (ISDN), Audio-CD 176 Kilobyte/s.

Beim Orange-3G-Test mit maximalen 800 kb/s kommt es gelegentlich zum Stopp der Darstellung, nach ein paar Sekunden geht es dann ohne Informationsverlust weiter (das Delay wird länger). Die Bildqualität ist besonders bei Szenen mit viel Bewegung höher, die Übertragungspausen sind lästig. Wir freuen uns auf bessere und schnellere Mobilfunknetze.

Eine Stunde Fernsehen bei 320 Kilobit pro Sekunde verbrät bei der Übertragung laut Convertbot also 140,6 Megabyte an Daten!

While searching the interwebs for some cool things to post today. I found this list that Newlaunches.com put out in 2007 of what they consider the most failed products of all time. Of course, I might attempt to shed some light on what the products may have led to – portability being a common theme.

Macintosh TV – 1993

Macworld was excited at least!

Today, all the talk is digital conglomeration, or the coming together of different media forms (i.e., television, audio, print, computers, internet, etc.). Now imagine this idea put back in time to the early 90s -No HDTVs, home computers hitting their stride, internet beginning to take off. Apple decided the time was ripe to take the TV and the computer and marry them… sorta. Sure the 14″ monitor provide a good television space and working space, but the two didn’t seem to work together. The Mac wasn’t allowed to access the TV port while the computer was on nor do picture in picture. The product failed, but set the stage for products today such as EyeTV or even YouTube and Hulu to bring a closer marriage of TVs and computers.

Might as well call it a tabletop.

Apple’s first laptop might as well been a desktop. The ultra-heavy, black and white screened, trackpad-missing, trackball-using behemoth was weighing in at almost 16 lbs! Today’s laptop (in Apple’s world) weighs a nice 5.5 lbs, making this thing seem more like a desktop than any kind of portable we know. A $6,500 price tag also led buyers then away from the computer. However, the lessons the industry learned from the product have led us to our laptops today and the netbooks bound to get smaller.

Listed as a failure, I would not consider the product so. Consider the product the predecessor to personal digital assistants, the features in our cell phones, and Apple’s first iPhone/iPod touch. Complete with handwriting recognition (which iPhone apparently has), the device could take notes with the best of them using a touch interface. While it was produced for many years, the product never impacted the market as was expected. It’s biggest failure may have been the fact it was one of many products that led Apple to nearly going bankrupt.

Die Produkte der Firma Elgato werden schon seit langem von Mac-Usern als elegante, stabile und äußerst praktische Geräte zum TV-Konsum geschätzt. Hiermit können die umfassenden Ausstattungsmerkmale des digitalen Fernsehens voll ausgenützt werden.

Seit ein paar Tagen gibt es die erste Version der dazugehörigen Software EyeTV auch für iDevices. Damit kann das TV-Programm am iPhone oder iPod touch verfolgt werden (“Live-Fernsehen”), sofern sich die Geräte (also der Mac mit einem Elgato-Tuner als primärer und das iDevice als sekundärer Empfänger) in WLAN-Netzwerken (Wi-Fi) befinden, dabei kann es sich auch um verschiedene Netzwerke handeln!

Die Übertragung per 3G-Mobilfunk wird ebenfalls unterstützt, allerdings nur für Aufnahmen aus dem “Filmarchiv” und alles außer “Live-Fernsehen”. (Edit: Irrtum! Siehe bitte hier.) Weiters kann der digitale EyeTV-Videorecorder am Mac sehr komfortabel aus der Ferne per iPhone über den EPG (eingebaute und ausgesprochen umfassende “Online-TV-Zeitschrift”) programmiert werden.

Für die 3G-Kommunikation zwischen iPhone und Mutterschiff ist die Einrichtung eines UPnP-Zugangs (Wikipedia: Universal Plug and Play; Sicherheitshinweise unter “Praktischer Einsatz” beachten!) am WiFi-Router (Beispiel-Bildschirmfoto für die Konfiguration eines acht Jahre alten Netgear-Routers) beziehungsweise des NAT-Protokolls an Apple-AirPort-Geräten (auch dazu ein Bildschirmfoto) vonnöten (Elgato-Anleitung) sowie eine Akkreditierung beim Gratis-Service My EyeTV von Elgato und eventuell eine Konfiguration der Firewall.

Bei unseren Tests funktionierte das soweit recht befriedigend. Bild- und Tonqualität (Stereo) sind erstaunlich hoch. Die App ist allerdings nicht ganz stabil (gelegentlicher Crash to Homescreen bei Manipulationen an den Player-Steuerelementen *) wie Time Shift, Pause…), und manchmal gibt es 3G-Verbindungsprobleme und Unterbrechungen (hängt auch von der Qualität der Netze ab). Bei angezeigten “Router-Inkompatibilitäten” kann es helfen, in den Eye-TV-Einstellungen (am Mac) die Option “My EyeTV verwenden” ab- und anzuschalten. Wird schon noch…

Oben unser kleiner Rossau-Videoclip: Eine ungeschnittene Echtzeit-Demonstration von “Live Fernsehen” über zwei verschiedene Wi-Fis: Am stationären MacBook Pro der Empfänger EyeTV-Hybrid (TV-Tuner Stick für DVB-T, DVB-C, analoges TV und FM-Radio; Produktseite von Elgato) – und im Wiener Kaffeehaus (wie die Hintergrund-Geräuschkulisse deutlich verrät) das iPhone.

Unseres Wissens besteht somit erstmalig in Europa die Möglichkeit, per iDevice & Mac außerhalb des eigenen Netzwerks “live” fernzusehen! Auf den nordamerikanischen Markt beschränkt gibt es schon länger Möglichkeiten wie Sling oder Streaming Apps einzelner Sendeanstalten wie CNN. Die in der EyeTV-App übersichtlich integrierte Möglichkeit, vorher aufgenommene und für den iPhotch vollautomatisch aufbereitete TV-Sendungen zu betrachten, funktionierte auch vorher schon recht zuverlässig über iTunes, das Web-Interface von EyeTV und iPhone-Apps wie Rowmote.

Das Gratis-Update auf die dafür unverzichtbare EyeTV-Software-Version 3.2 für den Mac (EyeTV-Hauptmenü, “Nach Updates suchen”) funktionierte bei mir erst im zweiten Anlauf (dazu musste die alte Version mit Time Machine wiederhergestellt werden; nicht ganz Mac-like) und erfordert – obwohl es bei der Installation nicht verlangt wird – für die Verbindungsaufnahme mit seinem iPhone-Pendant einen Neustart des Macs (sowie das Betriebssystem Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard oder neuer). Dazugehörige Problemlösung von Elgato (hier half – wie gesagt – Punkt 5).

EyeTV Releases iPhone App; lets users access live and recorded content from Macs. (Zatz Not Funny!)

Elgato hat nun die erste iPhone-App für die Zusammenarbeit mit der bekannten Mac-TV-Software EyeTV in den App Store gebracht. EyeTV für iPhone greift zu Hause im WLAN auf die laufende Mac-Variante von EyeTV zu und ermöglicht es, Live-TV sowie EyeTV-Aufnahme auf dem iPhone zu schauen. Außerdem lassen sich Aufnahmen auf dem Mac starten und die Aufnahmeliste ansehen und bearbeiten.

EyeTV für iPhone setzt EyeTV 3.2 sowie das iPhone OS 3.0 voraus. Der Preis ist mit 3,99 für eine App, die mit einer kostenpflichtigen Desktop-Software zusammenarbeitet, ungewöhnlich hoch.

Mit “My EyeTV” lässt sich Live-TV auch unterwegs verfolgen, WLAN vorausgesetzt. Der Zugang zum heimischen Mac erfolgt ähnlich Apples “Zugang zu meinem Mac”.

I am not one to be tied down, so the mere thought that I MUST be in a certain place, at a certain time to consume a particular TV show, doesn’t really strike me as real entertainment, especially when at the same time, you must consume ads along with them. Enter my modus operandi: when I heard the date for the VMAs, I set my EyeTV to record it in advance, so I could watch it a few days later (I’m saux busy!). By that time, I already knew Kanye was a fool, Lady Gaga bled all over, and that Beyonce won just a fraction of the awards she was nominated for, (also that Janet fell and had the BEST performance) all without turning on any kind of Live TV. Later, the recording can then be parsed for commercials at will, burnt to a disc, or if I felt festive, streamed from my computer to my phone. THAT is entertainment in the palm of your hands.

I think TV’s should be much more eco-friendly than they currently are, and that they should pay attention to when you are actually sitting there to save energy. I think a few sensors, a la ITP, could go a long way in ensuring behemoth TVs just sip on power. For instance, you walk in your apartment after a long day at work + school, then you flop on your couch, and a sensor turns your TV on, voila! No need to fidget for the remote. You get up for a phone call from your boo a few minutes later, and suddenly you have to get things to cook for dinner. You forgot to turn the TV off on your way out, but not to fear, it knew you weren’t watching, and turned itself off. Energy saved!

Eine der ersten Seiten dieses Blogs war vor etwa einem Jahr die Liste mit Linuxalternativen. Hier wollte ich die “must-have” Linuxprogramme auflisten, die man als Mac Nutzer installieren sollte, damit einem der Wechsel von einem Betriebssystem zum anderen nicht so schwer fällt. Ich hatte auf dieser Seite all die Programme zusammen getragen, die ich unter MacOS X häufig genutzt hatte. Die Liste der Alternativen zu diesen Programmen war in den ersten Monaten noch ziemlich dünn, füllte sich dann aber nach und nach.

Beim Schreiben des Jahresrückblicks (Teil 1 / Teil 2) ist mir dann aufgefallen, dass die Liste mit Linuxalternativen auch nach einem Jahr immer noch ein paar Leerstellen aufweist. Ganz schön viele eigentlich sogar. Azureus, ColorSync, Cyberduck, Dashboard, Disk Utility, Dock, DVD Player, Exposé, EyeTV, iCal, Preview, Quick Look, QuickTime Player, Spaces, VLC (Stand: 19. September 2009). Für all diese Programme hatte ich bislang keine Linuxalternativen aufgelistet. Nun ist nicht nicht so, dass es keine entsprechenden Programme geben würde. Ich hatte bislang nur noch keinen Artikel über diese geschreiben. Das war zum Teil meiner Faulheit geschuldet – zum Teil aber auch der Tatsache, dass einige Programme nicht spannend genug für eine umfangreiche Besprechung waren. Dennoch will ich euch die noch nicht besprochenen Linuxalternativen nicht vorenthalten. Viele dieser Programme nutze ich bereits seit Monaten, ohne das bislang erwähnt zu haben.

Azureus | Transmission

Transmission ist ein eleganter, kleiner BitTorrent Client. Merkwürdig, dass ich den unter MacOS X nie installiert hatte.

Mein Standardprogramm für BitTorrent war unter MacOS X Azureus. Kein besonders elegantes Programm. Aber es unterstützte die Verschlüsselung des Datenstroms und die Umleitung aller Trackeranfragen durch das Tor-Netzwerk. Ubuntu installiert als BT-Standardsoftware Transmission. Das hat ebenfalls Funktionen für Umleitung und Verschlüsselung. Im Gegensatz zu Azureus ist es viel eleganter zu bedienen und es ist cross-plattform. Ich hätte es also auch auf dem Mac nutzen können. Manchmal ist man hinterher schlauer.

Cyberduck | Nautilus

Die gute Integration von FTP, SMB, WebDAV und Co. in den GNOME Dateimanager Nautilus macht Programme wie Cyberduck für mich überflüssig.

Wer auf Daten zugreifen will, die nicht auf dem eigenen PC liegen, steht vor der Frage: Kann mein Betriebssystem das out-of-the-box, oder installiere ich eine spezielle Software dafür. Üblicherweise kommt am Ende eine Art Misch-Lösung dabei heraus. Zumindest bei mir war das bislang immer so. Für die SMB-Verbindungen zu den Rechnern im Netzwerk konnte ich den MacOS X Finder nehmen. Für FTP und WebDAV musste ich Cyberduck installieren. Die Finder-Integration dieser Protokolle war zu schlecht. Im GNOME Dateimanager Nautilus ist die Integration der gängigsten Protokolle eine ziemlich runde Sache.  Nautilus mountet Server als Laufwerke. Der Finder kann das theoretisch auch. In der Praxis war das aber immer ganz schön hakelig. Nautilus bekommt das viel besser hin. Alle Protokolle funktionieren reibungslos, man kann Bookmarks setzen, die Passwörter werden im GNOME Schlüsselbund gespeichert – das ist elegant, mir reicht das. Obwohl Cyberduck ein gutes Programm war, vermisse ich es nicht.

Disk Utility | GNOME Partition Manager

Apple Disk Utility: Es gibt unter Linux kein Programm mit einem ähnlichen Funktionalitätsprofil. Der GNOME Partition Editor (Abbildung) ist noch am ehesten vergleichbar.

Disk Utility (deutsch: Festplatten Dienstprogramm) ist so eine Art Schweizer Messer für alles rund um Festplatten, DVDs, Diskimages und so weiter. Obwohl… Der Begriff “Schweizer Messer” ist mir irgendwie zu postiv besetzt. Disk Utility ist eher so eine Art “Allesmöglicheprogramm”. Ich bin ja kein Fan von Multifunktionsanwendungen. Mit Disk Utility kann man DVDs brennen, Diskimages erstellen und mounten, das Dateisystem überprüfen, Festplatten formatieren, RAID-Systeme aufsetzen und sogar Backups machen. Ein Programm dieser Art gibt es für GNOME (zum Glück) nicht. Die Funktionen von Disk Utility findet man bei Ubuntu sinnvoll auf die passenden Programme verteilt. DVDs kann man beispielsweise mit dem Dateimanager Nautilus brennen. Im Sinne von “Festplatten Dienstprogramm” wäre der GNOME Partition Editor ein mit Disk Utility vergleichbares Programm. Es macht das, was es soll (Festplatten formatieren), sehr gut. Sprich: Es ist selbsterklärend und der Workflow ist so angelegt, dass man seine Festplatte nicht so leicht aus Versehen formatiert.

DVD Player / QuickTime | VLC Media Player

Der VLC Media Player spielt alle erdenklichen Videoformate problemlos ab.

Wenn ich mir auf einem Mac Videos ansehen wollte, dann stand zunächst mal immer die Entscheidung an: DVD Player? QuickTime Player? Oder VLC? DVDs aus Deutschland habe ich dann immer mit dem Apple DVD Player angesehen. Für QuickTime-Formate (mov, m4v, mp4, qt) habe ich den QuickTime Player benutzt. Für den Rest, also für DVDs aus den USA, für divx, xvid und Co., habe ich VLC genommen. Ich weiß natürlich, dass das blödsinnig war. VLC spielt auch deutsche DVDs und QuickTime ab. Vermutlich habe ich QuickTime Player und DVD Player einfach aus Gewohnheit immer weiter genutzt und deshalb nie gelöscht. Ich war ja schon seit 1995 Mac-Nutzer und kannte zunächst nur QuickTime. Die Standard-Ubuntuinstallation bringt den Media Player Totem mit. Wenn man die entsprechenden Codecs nachinstalliert, spielt der auch eine Menge Videoformate ab. Ich hab mich im Alltag dennoch für VLC entschieden. Vermutlich wieder aus Gewohnheit, weil ich den ja vom Mac schon kannte. “Hüben wie drüben”: Der VLC funktioniert auch unter Ubuntu völlig problemlos und ist momentan mein einziger Videoplayer.

Exposé | Compiz Scale

Wem die Ubuntu-Taskbar zu unübersichtlich ist, der könnte es mal mit der Compiz-Option "Scale" versuchen.

Ich bin ja kein großer Fan der GNOME Taskbar. Ein etwas übersichtlicheres Konzept für Fenstermanagement kommt von Apple und heißt Exposé. Ein Klick und man sieht alle offenen Fenster nebeneinander verkleinert auf dem Desktop. Diese Funktion kann man unter Ubuntu auch nutzen. Der Fenstermanager Compiz hat eine Option “Scale”. Die muss man aktivieren. Dummerweise bin ich klickfaul. Die unübersichtliche Navigaton via Taskbar benötigt genau einen Klick weniger als Exposé bzw. Compiz Scale. Obwohl es schick aussieht, benutze ich “Scale” selten.

iCal  | Mozilla Lightning

Lightning für Mozilla Thunderbird ist nur 2 Megabyte groß. Meine Linuxalternative für Apple iCal.

Leider habe ich keine eigenständige Kalender-Software für meinen GNOME-Desktop gefunden. Ich fand es immer gut, dass Apple in sein Mail-Programm nie einen Kalender eingebaut hat. Der Multifunktionsansatz von Microsoft Outlook  oder auch von Evolution (Linux) hat mich nie überzeugt. Ich hatte kurzzeitig mal Mozilla Sunbird ausprobiert. Aber bei dem Programm besteht ja akut die Gefahr, dass es nicht weiterentwicklet wird. Vielleicht sollte ich mal einen Blick rüber in KDE Lager werfen. Momentan siegt bei mir die Faulheit. Das Lightning-Plugin für Mozilla Thunderbird (nur 2 Megabyte!) funktioniert problemlos und genügt meinen (möglicherweise geringen) Ansprüchen. Das ist zwar jetzt auch eine integrierte Mail/Kalender-Lösung. Aber die ist wenigstens eleganter als das klobige Evolution. Meine alten Kalender aus Apple iCal habe ich importiert – und mir weiter keine Gedanken zum Thema Kalender gemacht.

Preview | Eye of GNOME (Image Viewer)

Eye of GNOME ist ein leistungsfähiger PDF- und Bildbetrachter - eine Alternative zu Apple Preview

Auf der WWDC Keynote 2003 hat Steve Jobs den Dokumentenbetrachter Preview als “fastest PDF viewer on the planet” bezeichnet. Und “gefühlt” war er das auch so – gerade im Gegensatz zum Adobe Reader. Preview kann selbst sehr umfangreiche Dokumente quasi ohne Verzögerung öffnen und anzeigen. Die Suche innerhab der Dokumente ist schnell. Neben PDFs zeigt Preview auch alle möglichen Bildformate an – auch die alle sehr schnell. Ubuntu bringt für diesen Zweck Eye of GNOME (Image Viewer) mit. Der zeigt ebenfalls PDFs und Bilddateien an. Ist auch sehr schnell. Im direkten Vergleich zu Preview aber vielleicht etwas langsamer. In jedem Fall ist der Image Viewer ein guter Ersatz für Preview.

Spaces | Compiz Expo

Wechsel zwischen zwei virtuellen Desktops mit dem Compiz-Plugin "Expo"

Als Apple im Jahr 2007(!) mit Spaces erstmals virtuelle Desktops für MacOS X einführte, waren sie spät dran. GNOME, KDE und Co. hatten diese Funktion bereits seit Jahren. In der Standardinstallation von Ubuntu sind bereits zwei “Workspaces” angelegt. Man erreicht den zweiten Schreibtisch üblicherweise über den kleinen Workspace-Switcher unter rechts.

Wem das nicht funky genug ist: Es gibt eine Menge Plugins für Compiz, die die Verwaltung der Desktops verschönern und erleichtern. Am bekanntesten ist sicherlich Cube. Ich selbst nutze ich das Plugin “Expo”.

Was jetzt noch fehlt: ColorSync, Dashboard, Dock, EyeTV und Quick Look

Das Projekt Bye-bye Apple Computer neigt sich allmählich dem Ende zu. Meine Liste mit Linuxalternative ist fast komplett. Es gibt noch fünf Leerstellen: ColorSync, Dashboard, Dock, EyeTV und Quick Look. Bislang habe ich diese Programme/Dienste aus ganz unterschiedlichen Gründen nicht vermisst. Deshalb hatte ich mich auch noch nicht auf die Suche nach Alternativen gemacht. Mein alter Mac mini ist noch als Videorecorder in Betrieb. Ich brauche momentan keine Alternative zu EyeTV, weil ich es auf meinem VCR-Mac ja noch nutze. Auf die Suche nach einer Linuxalternative für das Dock hatte ich mich bislang noch nicht gemacht, weil ich das Grundkonzept des Apple Docks nicht gut finde. Ähnliches gilt fürs Dashboard. Im Prinzip finde ich Widgets für Wetter oder Fahrplan ganz gut. Aber der Zugriff über das Dashboard-Layer war mir im Grunde immer ein Klick zuviel. Tja und ColorSync? Soweit ich das sehe, ist Farbmanagement für Linux kein großes Thema. Wenn ich den entsprechenden Eintrag auf Wikipedia richtig verstehe, dann unterstützen etliche Applikationen im Prinzip ein Farbmanagement. Wie ich meinen Monitor vernünftig kalibrieren kann, weiß ich aber nicht. Das Ergebnis: Momentan sehen meine Fotos noch auf jedem Monitor unterschiedlich aus.

Und dann gibt es da ja auch noch Quick Look. Die Instant-Vorschau für den MacOS X Finder. Ganz ehrlich: Das ist eine Funktion, die ich tatsächlich schwer vermisse. Auf dem Mac kann man sich eine sehr große Vorschau einer beliebigen Datei anzeigen lassen, indem man die Leertaste im Finder drückt. Das ist sehr sehr praktisch. Für Linuxsysteme ist diese Funktion erst noch in Entwicklung. Das Projekt nennt sich Gloobus und es scheint ganz gute Fortschritte zu machen. Ich kenne bislang nur vielversprechende YouTube Demos (siehe oben). Mit der Installation warte ich aber wohl ein paar Monate. Stoff für den ein oder anderen Beitrag scheint es mir auch nach einem Jahr “Bye bye Apple Computer” noch zu geben. Ein Glück.

Wenn Apple nichts dagegen hat, erscheint in den nächsten Tagen Elgatos EyeTV-Client fürs iPhone im AppStore. EyeTV ist eine durchdachte TV-Lösung für den Mac mit PVR-Funktionalität. Aufgenommene Sendungen lassen sich direkt für iPods, das iPhone oder Apple TV konvertieren und an iTunes übertragen.
Mit der sich derzeit in der AppStore-Warteschlange befindlichen iPhone-App wird das Leistungsspektrum der Software deutlich erweitert. Die Anwendung bietet ein ausführliches TV-Programm und die Möglichkeit, die Aufnahme von Sendungen von unterwegs zu programmieren.

Der EyeTV Hybrid USB Adapter von Elgato ist ein Adapter der sich zum Emfpang von analogen sowie digitalen TV Sendern eignet. Er kostet circa 105€.

Die Hardware

Der EyeTV Hybrid-Receiver ist ein 8 cm langer , 3 cm breiter sowie 1.5 cm hoher und sehr leichter USB-Stick. Im Lieferumfang ist die mehrfach ausgezeichnete Software EyeTV 3, eine Fernbedienung, eine Stabantenne für DVB-T mit Magnetfuss, eine kurze (~30cm) USB Verlängerung, eine Kabelpeitsche für Composite, S-Video- und Audioanschlüsse sowie ein Cinch-Klinken-Konverter. Neben der DVB-T-Antenne lassen sich auch ein digitales Kabel oder Satellit, einen Videorekorder  oder auch Spielekonsolen anschliessen. EyeTV Hybrid gibt unkomprimiertes analoges Videosignal ohne jegliche Latenz weiter was einen handelsübliche TV vollkommen ersetzt.

Die erste Inbetriebnahme

Nach der Installation von EyeTV 3 kann man den USB Adapter ganz einfach via USB anstecken und die Einrichtung starten. In EyeTV 3 muss lediglich noch der Sender-Suchdurchlauf gestartet werden und schon kann man digitales und analoges Fernsehen am Mac geniessen. Zu jeder mitgelieferten EyeTV 3 Lizenz gehört auch ein  Jahres-Abo bei tvtv.de, durch welches man direkt in EyeTV alle Programme der empfangenen Sender griffbereit hat ( kurz gesagt ein EPG)

EyeTV 3

Das Vollbild-Menü ermöglicht das Navigieren durch die fast komplette EyeTV-Software. Mann kann entweder mit der Tastatur, der EyeTV-Fernbedienung, der Apple Remote oder auch iPhone Apps (zB Rowmote)durch das Vollbild-Menü navigieren. Im Vollbild-Menü lassen sich sämtliche Sender auswählen, Aufzeichnung anschauen, sondern auch die Einstellung der EyeTV-Software verändern.

Eye TV verfügt über eine Picture-in-Picture Funktion (PiP). User, die mehr als einen Tuner besitzen, können nun zwei Programme gleichzeitig betrachten. Alternativ kann EyeTV anstelle eines zweiten TV-Signals auch einen Quick-Time-Film abspielen. Selbstverständlich kann jederzeit zwischen den beiden Programm-Fenstern hin- und hergesprungen werden. EyeTV gibt jeweils den Ton des Programms aus, das sich gerade im grösseren der beiden Fenstern befindet. PiP setzt eine Grafikkarte mit mindestens 64 MB Videospeicher voraus.

Das Aufzeichnen von Fernsehsendungen war eigentlich der Hauptgrund für die Anschaffung. Sie lassen sich mit einem einzigen Klick programmieren. Dank des EPG braucht man nicht einmal mehr eine Programmzeitschrift. Wird ein Programm aufgezeichnet, werden die Informationen zum jeweiligen Programm automatisch gespeichert. Dadurch ist es quasi unmöglich ein Unordnung zu bekommen. Aufgezeichnete Filme lassen sich mit Toast Titanium direkt auf DVD brennen oder in andere Formate exportieren. Für Serien gibt es die Möglichkeit intelligente Playlists anzulegen. Ebenfalls ein Klick genügt und schon werden alle Episoden der gewählten Serie aufgezeichnet (auf Wunsch auch mit den Wiederholungen)

Sehr praktische Funktionen sind auch zB einfach mal schnell auf Pause zu drücken um auf’s Klo zugehen oder Ähnliches. Es wird einfach im Hintergrund automatisch mitaufgezeichnet und später reicht ein weiterer Klick um einfach den Film weiterzuschauen.

Die Bildqualität von Eye TV ist auch im Vollbild-Modus, unabhängig von der Signalquelle,  sehr gut. Zusätzlich können in den Einstellungen die Funktionen Progressive Scan und Over Scan ausgewählt werden.

Fazit

EyeTV Hybrid ist ein relativ günstiger und sehr hochwertiger Receiver, der sowohl digitales als auch analoges Signal empfängt. Mit der Software EyeTV 3 wird zudem ein sehr mächtiges und intuitives Tool für die Betrachtung, Verwaltung und Aufnahme von Fernsehsendungen mitgeliefert.

I’m somewhat of a fan of 24 Heures du Mans, and whilst I’ve never seen a race live, nor attended it, there was something about the race that had me scouring the internet for information up to and during the race for quite a few years now. This year I had an opportunity to watch it live on TV, and owner of a decent laptop, I decided to splash out on an Elgato EyeTV DTT, and record the races, and upload them to my iPod Touch to watch on the bus. The EyeTV DTT made the most sense out of Elgato’s TV tuners, although it was the cheapest, it pretty much had the same functionality as the most expensive model, it can receive SD and HD broadcast TV, the software pretty much remains the same, the different seems to be in the bundled aerials. As I was plugging into a coax cable, there was pretty much no reason to splash out at all.

Well. The first evening after purchasing the EyeTV I spent about an hour trying to work out why the bloody thing wasn’t working. One of the great things about USB devices are the plug and play nature of them, perhaps after installing a piece of software, it really is just plug and play. Except in this case, it was more plug and pray. I contacted Elgato’s software support and after a few days they responded with a series of steps I should take to try and resolve the problem. They didn’t work, and the problem remained unresolved.

The following day I returned to Next Byte in Adelaide CBD, and exchanged the EyeTV for a replacement. That evening I went through the same process, to no avail. This time, to make sure it wasn’t my laptop, I tried another different laptop and again, wasn’t working. It was the morning of raceday, I was starting to get a little worried. I returned again to Next Byte, to try and sort this out, and leave with a working product.

I was fortunate to return to the same salesperson each time, and when I returned on my third time, we both had a little laugh about the problem, and decided to try out the remaining EyeTV DTT’s in the store to see if any actually worked. None of them did, all were defective!

Not wanting to miss my race, and getting a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to record it, I was more than happy to spend the extra $50 for the next model up (EyeTV Deluxe), but Next Byte kindly offered it at the same price as the EyeTV DTT as a consolation for the trouble. It was a rather nice gesture, one that they didn’t have to make, but one that I’m rather thankful of.

Overall, the service from Next Byte was exceptional. Friendly and apologetic for the problems that were really out of their own control, and willing to try out the other EyeTV DTT sticks to make sure I wouldn’t have to keep going through the same charade, and selling me a more expensive product at a cheaper price.

I did end up watching the race, and boy was it a corker. Better than I thought it could’ve been! Good work Peugeot!

It may seem as though it should be easy to get the videos off of your old video camera or vhs recorder and put it right into your Mac. Well, it is providing you have an old dv tape camcorder that has firewire. You can import the video straight to iMovie and then do with it as you please. But what if you want to digitize some old vhs tapes? or get video off of a camcorder that uses mini dvds? Not an easy, or all that cheap thing to get done. But there are definitely affordable methods of doing so.

The first solution you could come up with would be a simple conversion box that converts, analog (rgb and s video) and USB inputs to firewire. This is a decent solution, although not very cheap, the quality is great, and you can import directly to iMovie with it. The price tag is around $250 for such a device.

The second and preferable choice is Elgato’s EyeTV 250 plus. This is not only a converter but also a tv tuner. The TV tuner enables you to watch and record analog or even high definition cable directly on your Mac. Which you can then export to any iLife application, Quicktime, iPod, iPhone, Apple TV or a host of other destinations. The software that Elgato ships it’s products with is called EyeTV. Currently in version 3, you will find this a rather intuitive, powerful and flexible piece of software. The price tag is not all that much less then a simple converter box,  however it is far from just a converter box. Right now it is available directly from Elgato at a tidy sum of 199.00.

So how does one use the EyeTV? You will need either an s-video or RGB cables to connect your analog source to the EyeTV box with it’s included adapter cable. The EyeTV box connects to your Mac with USB 2.0. (Unfortunately you cannot use the box if you do not have USB 2.0 ports on your computer.) First thing you need to do is install the software by dragging and dropping it’s icon, from the included CD, into your Application folder’s icon in the same window. Then navigate to your Application folder and double click the EyeTV icon to launch the program. Plug the EyeTV’s USB cable directly into your Mac (a non-powered USB hub will not work.) You will be prompted to accept the end user license agreement, then tell the software what Elgato hardware you have from their drop-down menu. It will ask you how you want to use the product, make your choice then click next. Another prompt will ask you for your Titan TV username and password (Titan TV is an online service that grabs programming schedules based on your local cable company. Which you then use to schedule TV show recording with EyeTV’s software.). After all of the prompts you are given a window for live tv, and another window which is called EyeTV programs. This is the center of the EyeTV software, where your Titan TV schedule and recorded programs library lives.

For the purpose of this blog, I am focusing on getting old video from older media types imported. So for this to happen you need to go to the controls menu at the top of the screen on the menu bar. From there, select ‘composite video’ from the bottom of the menu. This changes the input on the EyeTV hardware from cable to RGB mode (select s-video from the controls menu if your video device has that option.). Then press play on your device to see if the video is coming through ok. Once the video signal looks, and sounds good,  simply go to the controller window which by default sits at the top right of your screen and click the EyeTV button to begin recording. Finally push play on your video device once again (rewind to the beginning if necessary). EyeTV is now pulling the audio and video into it’s program windows ‘Recordings’ library. The software does not automatically stop when your video does, so when the video is done playing click the EyeTV button on the controller again to stop the software from recording.

Once you get the video fully recorded you have many options available to you, which is where it’s power and flexibility comes in. From here you select a video and you can have the software export into all iLife application formats, several different video formats, iPod/iPhone formats and Quicktime formats. You can also burn the recordings directly to DVD or CD from Toast which is included in the software. Exporting for use on the web in various popular formats is supported as well. When all of that’s done you can plug in your cable tv to the box or watch over the air HDTV shows and record them as well.

I am not usually one to pimp products, but this one is all too worthy of my praise. Not to mention the fact that it provided me the means to help out a client by getting old wedding videos off of one of those, unbelievable disasters of a recording medium, mini dv camcorders. The project was a huge success, so much so that I now have my girlfriend digitizing old video tapes in the same exact manor. Nice job Elgato, you have the rare DandyMac seal of approval.

I love my Tivo. It’s a beauty. It’s an original Tivo Series 3 HD video recorder with dual tuners. It has two cable cards in the back, as well as an antenna input for the digital HD antenna in my attic. The picture quality is amazing, the Tivo software is second to none, and even the little “ploop” sound effect makes me happy when navigating the menus. It’s a work of art.

However, even with dual tuners, there are times when the Tivo alone isn’t enough. Somehow, all four major networks have conspired against me this season. Two nights a week, we want to watch/record more than two shows at once. It’s a weird perfect storm of programming, where ridiculously long episodes of American Idol and Dancing with the Stars (sorry, ladies… I’m happily married) conflict with Bones and 24 and Scrubs and, yes, The Biggest Loser (Is it me? Perhaps.).

Therefore, I had to come up with something else. We only have one TV in the house, so getting another cable box or Tivo wasn’t an option. “Dancey Show,” as I affectionately call it to my wife, isn’t worth buying another TV and Tivo. And sadly, there are still some shows that you can’t buy on iTunes or reasonably stream from a computer to a TV. However, I still have my wonderful AppleTV connected to my beautiful TV set, so I got to thinking.

I’ve heard much about Elgato’s EyeTV tuner stick for the Mac. It is basically a USB thumb drive-type device that has a coaxial cable input on one side and a USB connection on the other. You plug your cable into it, plug the stick into a Mac, and presto! You’ve got a new TV in the house, capable of receiving all standard programming from the cable company, as well as unscrambled Clear QAM digital signals. That means I just turned my iMac into a part-time HD television with Tivo capabilities.

Better still, the EyeTV software has built-in presets for handling your recorded shows. I can set recordings individually or by a Tivo-esque season pass, and then I can tell EyeTV what to do with the shows after they’re recorded. For example, whenever EyeTV finishes recording a fabulous! episode of Dancey Show, it automatically converts the show into a high-quality .mov file specifically tailored to the AppleTV. Then, it instantly moves the show into iTunes on my computer, which then syncs to my AppleTV in my den. The result? A beautiful HD-quality episode of Dancey Show magically appears on my AppleTV, enabling us to enjoy the dramatic ensembles of ABC’s finest constumers.

For a more manly example, I also have it set to record Hannity on Fox News Channel every night at 11:00pm. While I sleep, EyeTV records the show, encodes it into a specific iPhone format, and moves it into iTunes. So, when I sync my iPhone before work each morning, I automatically have last night’s episode of Hannity’s sharp wit and conservative tongue lashings for my lunch-time viewing pleasure.

EyeTV won’t cure cancer and it won’t make my daughter sleep more than three hours at a time, but it does meet a need. If you need to supplement your DVR capabilities, or if you want to get rid of the TV altogether, EyeTV offers a great feature set and fantastic quality, all for a single $130 outlay with no annual service contracts or subscriptions.

Nach fast einem Monat intensiven Nutzens nun ein Testbericht zum FIRE DTV Digital-Everywhere:

Fire DTV ist eine TV-Empfänger Box, die es in Versionen für DVB-T, DVB-S und DVB-C gibt,

ich nutze eine DVB-C Variante für Digitales Kabel-TV.

Die Box wird über Firewire 400 an den PC oder Mac angeschlossen und verfügt über einen weiteren Firewire-Port sowie einen Stromanschluss (nur beim ebenfalls mitgelieferten Mini-Firewire Kabel, ohne Stromzufuhr, notwenig).

Für Kabel-TV sind standard Kabel-Ein- sowie Ausgang vorhanden.

Außerdem ist natürlich ein CAM-Steckplatz vorhanden, den ich mit einem Alphacrypt Classic Modul bestückt hab,

das die TV-Chipkarte des TV-Anbieters aufnimmt und zur Entschlüsselung dient.

Im Lieferumfang ist auch eine (nicht besonders spektakuläre) IR-Fernbedienung enthalten.

Mit der mitgelieferten Software ist es kein Problem am PC alle TV- und auch Radio-Inhalte zu nutzen, aber auch aufzuzeichnen.

Selbst bei HD-Sendern funktioniert das Problemlos. Auch Sendungen in voller HD-Auflösung klappten einwandfrei.

Nach kurzem Test der Windows Software hab ich die Box jedoch an meinem Mac benutzt, großartigerweise unterstützt die Mac-Software Elagto EyeTV das FIRE DTV, hatte die Software bereits, aber für Neukunden gibt es zum Kauf eines FIRE DTV wohl die möglichkeit, EyeTV zu einem günstigeren Preis zu bekommen, Infos dazu gibts hier.

Im Vergleich zur mitgelieferten Windows-Software finde ich EyeTV bei weitem besser benutzbar.

Bei der Aufzeichnung können HD Videos leicht pro Stunde über 6 GB belegen.

Einziges Problem bisher war, das EyeTV nach einem Neustart, es nicht schaffte das CAM zu initialisieren, nach entfernen und wieder-einstecken des Alphacrypt Moduls funktionierte es aber umgehend wieder.

Preis: bei Online-Händlern FIRE DTV etwa 180-200€, Alphacrypt Classic Modul ab 95€, dazu Digitales Kabel-TV Abo

I’ve had TV Tuners for my Mac for several years now. They were older tuners from Miglia and Elgato that were for my analog cable channels. They were handy to have on my Mac when I wanted to watch sports or news while I slaved away on my Mac, but I never used the recording software that came along with the tuners (EyeTV) because the analog picture was not worth recording. That has now changed.

Enter the new EyeTV Hybrid TV Tuner Stick for HDTV, Analog TV and FM Radio. That’s a mouthful, but it deserves every word of it. Now I can grab all the old analog channels from my cable and all the unencrypted Digital channels and the Clear QAM HD channels too. They all work together with the software so that I’m able to watch an HDTV channel and switch over to an analog channel and then back again from the on screen tuner. Best of all, I’m now able to record HD and digital channels with the amazing EyeTV software. A full-featured TV tuner on my Mac, finally.

First, let’s look at the hardware. The Hyrid comes with The EyeTV 3.0 CD and PDF product manual, The Hybrid Tuner stick, USB extension cable, Break out cable for composite, S-Video and Audio connections, and infared remote control with battery pack, and the quick start guide. It features a USB 2.0 interface for the streaming of superior quality, uncompressed TV content and requires no external power supply. EyeTV Hybrid has a standard cable coax connector and does not require an antenna adapter. EyeTV Hybrid can record from a cable or satellite set top box, video recorder or camcorder, using either composite or S-Video connections. In the US, additional support is offered for set top boxes. But the one thing that really impressed me was the HD picture on my 20 inch Apple display. Breath-taking. It’s drop dead gorgeous.
