Ernests displayed some of his best tennis of the season during the current Asian swing of hard court

Ernests displayed some of his best tennis of the season during the current Asian swing of hard court tournaments, after he reached his first quarterfinal in over a year in Tokyo and stretched the top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to three tiebreak sets in Bangkok, despite a minor blip in his baffling loss to Fabio Fognini in Shanghai.

He battled his way past Junn Mitsuhashi and Dominik Meffert in the Tokyo qualifying, only to find himself facing Davis Cup finalist, Radek Stepanek, in the first round.

Ernests, however, exceeded expectations with a display of fearsome hitting. He served 13 aces and saved all five break points against him to overpower the sixth-seeded Czech.

In the next round, he had his Argentine opponent, Juan Monaco, well under control before the latter retired when down 3:6 1:4 due to a right hip injury.

The retirement propelled Ernests into his first quarterfinal since the 2008 Cincinnati Masters, where he once again was drawn to play against Tsonga.

Alas, it was not his day to break his losing record against the Frenchman, as he once again capitulated after capturing the first set.

His quarterfinal defeat was also unfortunate on another level, as he would arrive too late in Shanghai to play in the qualifying but was ineligible for the Masters event’s special exemption slot, which is reserved for a player who reached the semi-finals or better of Tokyo or Beijing.

It was yet another stroke of luck which ruled in his favour after the Shanghai organisers then decided to award him with a wildcard into the main draw.

Having been paired up in the first round against unheralded Italian qualifier, Fabio Fognini, whom he had beaten in a Davis Cup tie last year, Ernests was expected to progress to the second round against Novak Djokovic with no drama.

However, Ernests has never been known to conform to expectations, and suffered a straight sets loss to the Italian in an inglorious end to his Asian campaign.

Nevertheless, Ernests appeared to be on track to getting his game into order, and credited his new coach, Hernan Gumy, for his new-found focus.

He will now return to Europe for the final month of the season.

He is an alternate in both Moscow and Stockholm, which will be played next week, where it is likely that he will have to compete in the qualifying unless last-minute withdrawals ensure him a spot in the main draw.

He is the second alternate in St Petersburg, scheduled for the following week, where he has played since his ATP debut in 2006.

The final fortnight of the year will feature tournaments in Basel and Valencia, as well as the Paris Indoors Masters in Bercy. Ernests did not make the main draw for any of these events as at the sign-in deadline, but he may still compete in the qualifying rounds.

“The serve is the most important stroke in tennis.” It’s a truism, a staple of eve

“The serve is the most important stroke in tennis.” It’s a truism, a staple of every instructional manual, DVD series, or website that we obsessives scour in an effort to upgrade our games. Chances are that your pro imparted this chestnut when you first tried to learn this fiendishly difficult stroke. Its importance was most self-evident in the early- to mid-1990s, when flamethrowers like Becker, Sampras, and Ivanisevic seemed to win the big events with that stroke alone.

Listen to the television commentary at any Grand Slam, however, and you’ll hear that the courts have slowed; the balls are heavier; and space-age racket materials and strings have put a nuclear weapon in the hands of the returner, neutralizing the server’s traditional advantage.

Has the serve’s importance diminished? Perhaps. But the best servers still tend to outplay the game’s best returners.

I looked at the 30 players with the highest winning percentage on their service games, and the 30 with the best records on their return games. I calculated the average ATP ranking, as of September 21, 2009, for both groups.

For the best servers, the average ranking is about 19. For the best returners, it’s about 30, a difference consistent with conventional wisdom about the serve’s importance. The gap may nevertheless paint a distorted picture. As you get to the bottom of the top returners’ list, some fairly marginal players make their way into the spreadsheet.

Fabio Fognini, with an ATP ranking of 87, and Rainer Schuettler, ATP ranking of 93, are both among the 30 best returners. The lowest ranking among the best servers, by contrast, is Mardy Fish at 52.

If you look at the top 10 from each list, the gap is much smaller—an average ranking of 14 for the 10 best servers and 17 for the top-10 returners. And if you look at the top 20, the returners have a slight edge.

No doubt about it, the serve is the most important stroke in tennis. It starts the point. It sets the tone. But the balance of power has become more equal.

Ideally I should have posted this at least a week ago, but my internal clock said it was time to do anything BUT. I also slept a lot. The tournament, btw, went great. The stands were always full for the night sessions and that was a beautiful thing to see. The only snag were the early upsets and retirements: the tournament lost 7 of its 8 seeds in the first two rounds. Things straighten up in the end, though, with the victory of the young and promising Italian Fabio Fognini, the number 1 seed. Here’s a nice (I think) picture of him during the final:

Fognini’s opponent in the final match was Argentina’s Cristian Villagran, one of the nicest guy ever. He also won the Doubles with Stefano Ianni, so he didn’t go home empty handed. On court, he’s a fighter:

I’ll finish with my most favorite tennis shot… ever! The player is Marco Crugnola. The linesman keeping his eyes on the line behind him is what makes the shot, in my very amateurish opinion.

And we have most of our semifinalists! Give it up for Andreas Vinciguerra, ranked 460 in the world.

And we have most of our semifinalists!

Give it up for Andreas Vinciguerra, ranked 460 in the world. He thrilled the home crowds with a three-set victory over fourth seed Jurgen Melzer. Who would have thought Sweden would have had two homeboys in the semis, as Rob Soderling out-thwacked Nicholas Almagro? Tommy Robredo dismissed my man Teimuraz 64 60 – grrr – and the match of the day (at least from my perspective) turned out to a bit of a damp squib. Fernando Verdasco was listless and struggling from the beginning with a tight right calf muscle, presumably the result of exhaustion after having played fourteen sets in Davis Cup and an epic match with ol’ Krazy Koellerer the previous day. It actually would have been over much quicker, had not Pico gone inexplicably soft in the head seeing how much Verdasco was struggling and started hitting the ball right back to him. Ah well. I’m sure Nando will be fully recovered and ruining my life in no time at all.

The biggest shock of the day was Fabio Fognini – who has eerily grown to resemble Ming the Merciless – defeating second seed Nikolay Davydenko in three sets.

Fabs played a solid match, but it was fairly dreadful stuff from Kolya, who just couldn’t find his range with any consistency. Hanescu beat Sidorenko in straight sets, but sadly rain interrupted play, so the winner of Kiefer-Kubot and Zverev-Chardy will presumably have to play two matches. Tough stuff.

Bastad

Singles – Quarter-finals

Atp Stoccarda – Fognini-show, battuto Davydenko

Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray both survived double duty to book their spots in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters. Nadal defeated both Nicolas Lapentti and Ivan Ljubicic with relative ease, though he did start slowly against both of them. However, once he became comfortable, he was able to dominate both of his opponents.

“The first match [of the day] I started badly, but I finished the match better than I start,” said Nadal. “The second match, maybe even had a lot of mistakes. But the feeling was better. [The] important thing [is that] I finished the day better than I started [it].”

Nadal will face 4th ranked Andy Murray in the semifinals. Murray also had double duty on Friday, as he defeated both Fabio Fognini and Nikolay Davydenko; however, he was tested in both of those matches. He has played well and fought hard during his matches this week, but he will need to improve if he wants to defeat Nadal, who is 25-0 in Monte Carlo.

The other semifinal match will be between 3rd seeded Novak Djokovic and 13th seeded Stanislas Wawrinka, who backed up his win over his countryman Roger Federer with an impressive victory over Andreas Beck.

“Sometimes after a big win, you might put pressure on yourself,” said Wawrinka. “But I was aware of that and I tried not to do that.”

Djokovic was equally as impressive in his win over Fernando Verdasco. He looked to be in control after winning the first set 6-2, but when Verdasco raised the level of his play, Djokovic was able to respond and win the match in three sets.

“I think today was a really good test, a really good match for me, that I can see if I’m able to do that. That’s what I did. I hung in there [and] just waited for my chances.”

Rain in Monte Carlo put paid to what looked like a truly thrilling encounter between Andy Murray and Fabio Fognini. Fognini, world no. 108, held a decisive 5-0 lead in the first set when Murray staged a phenomenal come back to push for a tiebreak. The tiebreak was a nail-bitingly close affair with some phenomenal shot-making from both players. Murray took the tiebreak 13-11.

Play was suspended at 1-0, Murray.

Fognini shared some insight on the children of ‘87 playing in the juniors tourney’s in his interview after defeating Cilic on Wednesday.

Q. Were you friends at juniors with Murray?
FABIO FOGNINI: No, he was a friend. I tell you before, we know each other very well. Me, Novak and also Zverev, he was playing like we are ‘87. Del Potro was playing with us, ‘88. So we know very well.

Tennis: Fabio Fognini agli ottavi dell’Atp di Montecarlo

Immenso Fabio Fognini all’Atp di Montecarlo.

Starace was the only man on court who was yet to feature in a match this weekend. Ernests, Juška and Seppi were forced to complete their singles matches this morning due to heavy rain on Friday.

Nonetheless, the Italians – in particular, Potito Starace – began to find their range in the subsequent sets. Aided by some dubious shot selection on Ernests’ behalf and the slow surface which neutralised the Latvians’ big serves, Seppi and Starace proceeded to comprehensively out-muscle their opponents, resulting in the final scoreline of 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-4.

Latvia now will have to win both of tomorrow’s reverse singles matches to capture this tie. The top player from each team – Ernests for Latvia and Seppi for Italy – will face each other, while Juška is scheduled to play against Fognini.

Ernests and Seppi have split the two matches they played prior to this tie, but Seppi was the victor in their lone meeting on clay (Pörtschach 2008.) On paper, Italy are the clear favourites to win this tie, with Seppi being ranked No. 28 to Ernests’ 50, and Fognini No. 71 to Juška’s 394.

The winner of this tie will remain in Group I for the 2009 season while the losing team is relegated to Group II. This is Latvia’s first ever year in the Europe/Africa zone’s first division and they are keen on not being eliminated almost as soon as they arrived.
