Whew … Right now I feel a little bit in a daze! I know we all have so much going on … in our personal as well as professional lives. Together with the Harvest Festival we have going on right now, as well as the Thanksgiving Holiday and now Christmas preparations, we are being pulled in so many directions! But, that doesn’t mean we have forgotten you. Still, my favorite thing to do when a take a few moments each day is to read the kind deeds you all are doing.

I realized last night that some of you may be wondering what we are doing to contribute to the kind acts. Inspired by many of you, we have had a week of giving around here … cleaning out closets and donating 8 giant bags of clothes, plus we brought in dozens of like-new toys, games and puzzles. My husband and son worked at the soup kitchen all day on Monday – they served over 600 people that day – and you can believe it made quite an impression on my teenager. I have also been making my boys more aware of what’s going on around them … pointing out a lady to help with her grocery cart (they get stuck in the snow on the way out to the car), and I had my oldest offer to pump the gas for an older man – the gentleman told me it reminded him of the old days when that was part of the service – and was so thankful! We have a homeless man who lives down in town, and so we picked up a pre-cooked chicken for him, a couple of apples, a bag of cookies, and a couple of water bottles – the smile alone was a huge reward. As you can imagine, we have become quite friendly with our local PO. So, we brought in a batch of fudge on Wednesday – they were all so grateful to know that we care! Because we are involved in the Scouts, I always order extra wreaths, trees & centerpieces – and bring them to 3 of the senior citizen homes around here. While we have had such a giving week, what I’m really trying to instill in my boys is the importance of year round thoughtfulness – my boys are very fortunate, so it is their responsibility to help those around them.

Okay, so now on to the past few days of winners. Where were we? Oh Yeah .. Days 21 – 28 … Yikes! But, that’s ok – we have something special for each of these winners … they each receive a $25 Gift Certificate from Homespun Hearth! These Gift Certificates are valid from December 1 – 31, 2009, so they can have a little something extra to spend for the holidays.

Our Day 20-28 Winners are…

It’s been a long time since my last post. I’ve had lots going on, as I’m sure everyone does! So, there’s no excuse! ;D

I’m teaching my 6 year-old daughter, Alyssa how to sew! And, she is having a blast! She’s made a couple of pillows to start; and, this week we made fabric ornaments. I cut out the shapes and Alyssa has sewn her teacher’s ornament all by herself and she’s so smitten!

I think it’s best to train a child on a ‘real’ machine instead of the toy machines. A hand crank is also a good child’s beginner sewing machine. Always teach safety no matter what kind of machine use.

…she also stuffed her ornament!

Way to go, Alyssa! I’m thinking by the time she’s 8 years-old, Mommi’s Helper will be piecing quilt tops! ;D

I’ve been busy sewing all kinds of things. A sewing friend of mine, who also had given me my first treadle machine, taught me to piece and free-motion quilt. I’ve always wanted to learn how and now I’ve gone quilting crazy! Resistance is futile!

On that note, here is a WIP of a Christmas tree skirt, which I have pieced and am now free-motion quilting. Check out the tutorial from Piece N Quilt blog.

Hopefully, I can finish quilting this today so that I can add the binding and get it in the mail soon!

Here is a cute gift or stocking stuffer project using up scrap fabric.

Cup cozy (cup sleeve) and mug rug (coaster)!

I used a cup sleeve from my cuppa as a template and added about .5″ in size for seam allowance; cut 2 of fabric and cut 1 of batting (for both sleeve and mug rug). I measured about 2″ in width for binding (sleeve). Cut the mug rug 4.5″ square and for it’s binding, I measured about 1 1/8″ width.

It was good sharing with you all! I have to get back to work. I’ll try not to stay away so long!

HAPPY SEWING!

The pocket square owes its origins to the handkerchief, which has been used for over 600 years and originated in England. Initially, the handkerchief was adopted by the upper class, but by the 17th century it was common among all classes throughout western Europe. Originally, handkerchiefs were kept in trouser pockets. However, by the 19th century, as two-piece suits came into fashion, men started to place a clean handkerchief into their jacket’s breast pocket. By the 1920’s the pocket square had become more of a fashion accessory, especially after folding techniques were developed. The pocket square as accessory was cemented in the 40’s and 50’s after disposable tissue was introduced.

Always appropriate, a pocket square is a fantastic way to add colour and detail to any sport jacket, blazer, suit or tuxedo. The only situation in which we would not recommend sporting a pocket square would be if you’re wearing a boutineer.

A boutineer with a pocket square seems crowded and overdone. One should preclude the other.

When accessorizing an outfit with a pocket square, try to match it with your tie or shirt. If your approach to clothing is more traditional, then feel free to use a white pocket square. Our favourite look is combining an Antonio Valente sport jacket with one of our sport shirts, worn open, and a pocket square made from the same shirt fabric.

Shirt and pocket square were cut from the same fabric

There are many pocket square styles, from the traditional square fold (The Presidential) to anything you may imagine.

Have you seen this new quilt?

Well, call me crazy, but I’ve decided to make this beautiful quilt. To make it even crazier, as I signed up to make this as a block-of-the-month project for next year, I was approached by an equally crazy friend and employee from Quilted Threads to make this as a store sample. How flattering is that? But wait, it gets crazier, the quilt needs to be ready for display in January! So, OK, I’ll think about it – for about 5 minutes- and guess what? I am making this for the store sample.

I love reproduction fabrics, and particularly civil war era fabrics. I have a fascination with the whole civil war time period-maybe in a previous life I lived in the south during those times, or maybe it was just Clark Gable as Rhett Butler that does it to me. At any rate, here I go, trying to do more than I should in a smaller time frame than is possible. i just can’t seem to help myself.

The first block is started. As accurate as I am cutting, sewing, and pressing, I can never get my blocks to come out perfect. I guess close-enough will have to work. But, have you seen all those half-square triangles in this quilt? There are enough to make even the best quilter sweat a little. And, don’t even talk about quilting this quilt. The finished size measures 1o0 X 110 which is not the problem, it’s those sawtooth borders along the outside edge!

This will certainly challenge me ad a piecer and quilter. But, hey, what else is there to do? It’s the day after Thanksgiving, and I have almost no family to connect with over the holidays. This project will keep me busy and keep me from getting melancholy before and during Christmas.

Another big plus, this is probably the only way I will complete this quilt – a deadline! YAY for deadlines!

 Now, off to sew…..

OMG! – I forgot to post this picture…

More new fabric! Did I tell you how much I love reproduction fabrics? The large print is from Moda, a Laundry Basket collection called “Close To My Heart” and the smaller pieces from the ” Astor Manor” collection. This quilt is just waiting for borders. I needed a quick project to complete to feel like I could get something done and not have a project linger. I’m into month 11 of a 12 month BOM and getting weary of it dragging on. It’s a great idea, but a block of the month project just takes too long to complete.

 Now, back to sewing…

Fabric tote bags have so many uses it would be difficult to list all of them. But what is for sure i

Fabric tote bags have so many uses it would be difficult to list all of them. But what is for sure is that they never go out of style. They are commonly used as beach bags, diaper bags, purses, and as girls move to higher grades in school, they are using them as book bags in place of backpacks. They are just trendier and look more adult than a backpack.

One of the reasons that they work so well is that they can be purchased plain or printed with virtually any kind of design. Plain bags are a favorite among crafty people who enjoy decorating their own bags. Some people decorate the tote bags and sell them at craft shows and small shops.

Fabric tote bags are inexpensive to buy, too. Many women have several bags for different uses, and they usually have one that they carry to work with their laptop computer, files, appointment book and some office supplies. These women may have another for shopping days that are large enough to carry their smaller shopping bags as they go from store to store in the mall.

You should be aware, though, that when you carry a big fabric tote bag into a store you are likely to be followed around by security because there’s plenty of room to drop stolen goods into. But if you are doing nothing wrong there is nothing to worry about, let them follow you.

Fabric tote bags are popular among busy moms, especially those who have toddlers. These bags are great as diaper bags since they will fit everything you need to take care of your baby on an outing. And you can throw in your wallet and personal things in, too This way there is no need to carry a diaper bag and a purse.

An old trend that is new again is kids in primary school carrying fabric tote bags in lieu of backpacks. Girls at that age need to carry personal items to school like hairbrushes, feminine products, and they can’t live without their cell phones (which they’re not allowed to carry in school, but they do). There is enough room in such a tote bag to put their personal items and all their books and schoolwork in at the same time.

Many busy women prefer bags made of fabric to pocketbooks for regular use. These bags make it easy to toss everything into; when you need something on the go, you can reach into your tote bag and grab it. No need to remember which pocket or zipper everything is in.

Fabric tote bags are wonderful for traveling, too. As a carry on bag for air travel you can fit your personal items, an electronic game for long trips and puzzle books and magazines, snacks, and items that you don’t want to check. Some people put their clothes in one bag and their personal items in another and that’s all they need for a short trip. There’s no need to check any bags and worry about them being lost in flight.

Yesterday I received an email from Amy Butler’s website announcing her new line of fashion and travel bags for Kalencom, and today I received one about her webshop having a sale on her older bags for Rowan.

The new line of bags looks great – check them out at www.amybutlerdesign.com

I love the look of the leather accents. But I can’t even begin to imagine how much she’s charging for these babies.

As for the older bag collection, I went to the webstore to check them out (http://www.amybutlerdesign.expressfulfillment.com) – yikes, expensive! These are bags from her “Sweet Life” line for Rowan that she has marked down to clear for the holidays. I had no idea her signature bags sold for so much though. You could buy a Coach bag for those prices! Good thing I can sew and make my own bags…

Mummy had a great time too. I’ve been trying to get to Gardams so I could get a ‘feel’ of some fabric rather than just buying online. A happy coincidence was the 20% off all fabric that I didn’t know about. Here are the fabrics I managed to pick up Argghhh – Mike took card reader to work and left it there!!!!!!!!. Only one from the remanent bin – which is the very traditional plaid. I also have some fabric from Crafty Mamas and Tessutis coming shortly. Plus patterns from the Vogue and Butterick sales and my first Burda from CM.

I was supposed to do this post while the kids were at school….but that got filled with swimming and shopping. (I figure my family and our guests would like to have actual food on Thanksgiving!) And then I sat down to type a little Thanksgiving message when Kyle asked “Mom, can we play a game? Or do you have work you have to do?” Ya know what I said? “I’d love to play with you!” BUT now the game is over, (I lost!) I did have to get on here before all the baking begins to let you know of a little something sweet.

This time last year, at Thanksgiving, I premiered favorite sewn piece. It was a two piece knit, pant

This time last year, at Thanksgiving, I premiered favorite sewn piece. It was a two piece knit, pant and top. The pant was a trimmed down version of Vogue 8499 by Marcy Tilton. Great pant with princess seams and deep front pockets. The shirt was a Vogue Basic 8536, slim fitted pullover. I used a Sophia double knit. I made a few others in the course of my experimentation. The Sophia double knit is the best fabric choice so far.

Now I am looking back at how it worked for me in my wardrobe, what can be improved and how did it wear. Of the three pieces, Black, Cocoa Brown and Olive, the Black is the favorite. I veered away from the Sophia double knit for the Olive and the tell is in the wear.

The two piece is the foundation for scarves, vests and jackets. My daughter calls it my improved sweat suit. It has that type of comfort of wear and ease of care.

This year, rayon blend Ponte knits are everywhere. Ponte is a good workhorse of knit. With the rayon blend there is not that cheerleader uniform kind of shine. It is heavier, and I need be really careful of the pant style. Only a slim fit pant for this one. I made that mistake already. I will be re-cutting those pants this weekend. A few pieces will make the foundation of the winter vacation

I was finishing up this top: when the mail carrier arrived. I’ve been trying to make time for

I was finishing up this top:

when the mail carrier arrived. I’ve been trying to make time for a little something Authentic. It was one of those make it up as you go along things. Which is not really the best approach in the interest of time. Because I cut a set of strips, sewed them together, liked what was going on and then proceeded to cut another set of strips. Which finally led to a third session of strip cutting and sewing to finish the job. Indirect but not necessarily as inefficient as it felt, I guess.

So, the mail carrier resolved the impending piecing thread crisis:

A little later the UPS man solved the quilting thread crisis:

I ordered the Superior direct from Superior. I ordered the Aurifil from a new to me place called Pumpkinvine Corner. Pumpkinvine has great prices on Aurifil. Had to order two cones to get the superb cone price but I will definitely go through these.

Ahh, that’s better to have the thread pantry re-stocked.

So what did I do after the thread issues were resolved? Played with the tape, of course:

And I ran out of tape while doing this.

For the U.S. readers, may you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I’m going to gobble up some Tofurkey.

So, yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with Chris who is the resident machine tech who keeps my Bernina in tip top working order. I had signed up for a class with him on maintaining my machine and, somehow, lost the note which had the date on it. For some reason I thought that it was a day during the last week of the month, so I called Sunday to see when it was. Oops, it was the 19th! Dismayed, I called

Chris

Chris the next day. He graciously invited me to come in for a one-on-one lesson. Having maintained my other mechanical machines, it was easy to follow his instructions. I learned about some other oiling points that I can service on a regular basis to extend the life of my machine. I use my machine a lot and will probably oil it about once every week or two. He is patient, very pleasant and very knowledgeable in the repair and servicing of Bernina’s and other machines. He loves what he does.

I so appreciate The Cotton Patch’s commitment to service. When my machine had to go in for repairs while Chris was on vacation, Carolie Hensley, the proprietor, sent me home with a loaner machine similar to my own. I know that this is not usually a store policy, but due the the longer time period, I asked if this were a possibility. Thank you, Carolie for making my day! Unfortunately, Carolie was in a meeting at the time I was taking my pictures. However, I did manage to snap a couple of the staff.

Speaking of the staff, whenever I have had the occasion to talk to or ask for help from the staff at the Cotton Patch, they have always been courteous and helpful. I encourage anyone who wants to buy a machine, get one serviced, take a class or see/buy the latest fabulous fabrics that are offered, to go to the Cotton Patch for a great selection. Here are some pix of the store and staff. Visit them on the web at http://www.quiltusa.com.

In my kitchen was a glass full of lavender, standing next to the teas. I bought that organic lavende

In my kitchen was a glass full of lavender, standing next to the teas. I bought that organic lavender because I like the smell and simply couldn’t resist buying it, with no particular idea of what to do with it. So I poured it into a weck-glass and there it was, next to the teas and from time to time I thought I should do something with it before its getting faded. And then, some weeks ago, it hit me: make tea-bags with lavender! So I disassembled a bag, drank the Earl Grey, made some sort of pattern and started cutting and filling:

It was fun and now I have some lovely-smelling tags for sale and for my Christmas-presents:

And I also very much like the tin-box!

I don’t know when this piece of purple fabric entered the stash or even where I got it from, but I do know that it has been in the stash a long time. I was doing some fine tuning adjustments on my basic sloper pattern last March and I needed to try out my adjustments, so I dug this purple piece, as well as a blue piece, out of the stash. I washed the fabric and took it to the cutting table, but as I cut out the purple fabric, I lost interest in the fabric and the shirt. I can’t explain it. It just didn’t cut out well and it soured me on the whole project. After cutting and ironing on some interfacing, I sewed the shoulder seams and that is where the construction stopped. I just did not care to sew on it anymore, so I tucked it in the closet. Each time I opened the closet to start a new project, it would be sitting there staring at me, but there it would remain for a long time.

A few weeks ago during the prep for embroidery day, I ran across the shirt and decided to get it out and finish it. As I sewed the collar on, it just didn’t quite sew right, but I didn’t care. While sewing the side seams, the serging puckered a little and I just didn’t care. The hems wanted to give me some grief, but I just did not care. In picking out an embroidery design, I picked the design I had been wanting to try, not what would have been best looking on the shirt. I just didn’t care.

Well, upon completion of the shirt, I looked back at the sewing process and thought to myself, “This shirt actually was a struggle to sew together, but with the I don’t care attitude, it was not problem.” I wish all my sewing projects could be have the I don’t care attitude. It would save me a lot of frustration. But, it would probably make me a sloppier sewer so maybe it is for the best that I do care. Although, I think I will tuck a little I don’t care attitude away for the those times when a sewing project is really trying my patience.

Another funny thing about the “I don’t care” shirt is that it is very comfortable and I love to wear it.

By the way, my adjustment worked well in both the blue shirt and this shirt.

Alright alright. You are reading my last post from my France trip.

I figured I needed to stop dragging my feet about it, and to just post it, before things here start picking up and I start making other cool things I want to post photos of.

But Vernissage, our final exhibit, was amazing. It took a lot of work getting it all ready, but everyone was running busily around the village, and was much fun.

I don’t know what I was thinking that weekend, but I only took photos of the fibers studio, and nothing else.

I will explain a bit what Vernissage consisted of, because talking to my mom, she didn’t really understand, and I think that was my lack in explaining what it was.

Basically, “Vernissage” is the French word for “opening” and used in reference to art openings. So that’s all that means, is we put together our own show (which you’d probably figured out anyways). But since there were a few different majors represented at SCAD Lacoste this past quarter (as there always is) and many talented students, we had a lot of things to find places for, and took over Rue du Four. We were in little galleries up and down the street, in back rooms and in our various studio spaces we’d been in all quarter. There was a lot of stuff, and everything (really, everything!) looked GREAT. I really am going to one day be looking through a magazine, see a commercial or billboard, or be reading a design blog, and will see something someone did and be able to truthfully say, “Oh! I lived in France with them for 8 weeks when I was a senior at SCAD.”

I know talented people, for real.

So here is a little bit of what the Fibers room looked like at Vernissage. Please look at Lissa Nancy’s blog, because I know she is the only one that took before and after photos and while they’re not on her blog yet, I’m sure she’ll put the up when she’s back in the states. (She gets home today, so she can finally feast on our long awaited guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!)

And here are some detail photos of my napkins done with my favorite thing: free motion embroidery:

It was a wonderful wonderful show, and we had a lot of fun.

I wish I had photos of the rest of the things that happened, but browse around the blogs on the right, and see what you can find. I have a lot of people from Lacoste on there, so I’m sure you’ll find something.

Thanks so much if you’ve been reading these blogs faithfully while I’ve been in France. I truly did miss home so much while I was away am I am so glad to be back, but I already feel a little bit like it was a dream! It really was such a wonderful quarter and I wouldn’t ever trade it for anything else, despite how much I missed home sometimes. It was such an incredible time, and I did tons of things. I have only touched the surface of my travels on this blog, but I did the best I could without saying too much. (Although I’m sure I did sometimes.)

I will be in Florida for the next month or so, before going back to Savannah, but I plan on making lots of cute things over the break, and continuing to do fun things and take photos, and continue to update this blog, so it’s not ending here, although it won’t be as dependable, that’s for sure.

But that is all for now. Happy Thanksgiving (tomorrow) and welcome home to my fellow France loving friends.

xoxoxox.
