Mas antes quero explicar para os que estão acostumados com o Strokes, esse álbum é uma outra proposta musical, portanto não adianta tentar traçar comparativos, caso contrário teríamos que comparar todos esses carinhas aqui também:

My friend Maz and I showed up to the Palace in downtown LA around 8:15pm for the 9 o’clock show.  I knew we were at the right place due to the stormy sea of black leather jackets and skinny jeans being donned by the uber-cool greasy-haired hipsters making their Friday night pilgrimages from Echo Park and Silver Lake.

The first victory of the night was getting by security unscathed. Meaning, they didn’t confiscate my camera.  God knows I would have forgotten to pick it up and left without out it. That’s just how I roll. Anyway, there was a bar available upon entrance into the theater, but I’m just about as poor as poor gets and Maz didn’t seem to be taking any interest in the alcoholic bounty, so we quickly found our seats about seven rows back on the left, downstairs.

The 20-30 something crowd could either be found quietly sipping their brown ale, killing time on their iphones or just chatting with chums. The vibe in the place was cool, collected, anything but rowdy, much like the man we were all there to see.

As the curtains opened, there was an immediate, undeniable shift in energy from the (once) disinterested mob. Everyone was on their feet in a split second, literally shouting at the top of their lungs. We’re talking Beatles,  Ed Sullivan Show, 1964-type excitement.  Now, being the mega-star that he is, you might think that Julian would be used to this type of welcome. But from the moment he sheepishly walked to the front of the stage, you knew that this show was different. This was special. He was vulnerable. He was thankful. There was a genuine look of relief when he realized how excited his fans were to see him again. He placed his hands together as if praying  and thanking us for the salvation of acceptance. He looked weathered, slightly tired, but had a younger and more innocent aura than I was anticipating. See I’ve never actually seen The Strokes live, I’ve been listening to them for the past six years or so and never had a true desire to shell out the dough for a performance. There have been too many mediocre reviews of their concerts. Too many rumors of Julian producing sub-par performances due to inebriation and basic lack of respect for his fans.  I didn’t want any part of that, but when my buddy told me he had an extra ticket for this show, I figured I’d give it a shot. And am very glad I did.

For the first time in his musical career, Casablancas wasn’t sharing the spotlight, this concert was his baby and he was going to revel in the new life he created and cradle it until it coo’d.

If you know anything about The Strokes then you know their distinct sound;  Fabrizio Moretti pounding and slicing the drum beats through the “in your face/come hither” guitars as to create excitable stress, but backing off just enough to give gracious respite and keep you coming back for more. Casablancas’ solo work seems more free-form, less controlled, allowing his youth and honesty to take front and center. The synthesized melodies could send any 80’s pop expert into a whirlwind of nostalgia.  “I wish air clouds could hold me up, Like I thought as a child growing up,” he sang on “Tourist,” one of my favorite performances of the night.

In between songs, Casablancas conversed with the crowd. So relaxed, so smooth, what a dangerous man. “F@#%in’  LA, man. F@#%in’   Ellllll Laaaaaay,” he crooned and giggled after the first song, as if we were college buddies he hadn’t seen in a few years.

A treat in the night came about five songs in when, after finishing up, Casablancas looked to the crowd and stated that the band would be back in  five minutes. No one had any idea what was going on. Was that a self-implemented encore? I don’t know. Do you know? You don’t know. Great. But sure enough, no less than ten minutes later the curtains are torn to their respective corners and reveal the six-piece band donning white tuxes and twinkle lights, backed up by a stage that seemed to be a cross between the set of Tron and old Hollywood.

Just before performing his last song, Casablancas confessed “this is, in fact, the last one, we have no more songs, I promise you,” which immediately translated to a crowd of boo’ing and hissing loyals begging for more. Luckily, since this was the first show out of a four-Friday residency in November, Casablancas stated that he would neglect to share that piece of information in the future. And with that, a giant kaleidascope lit up the stage to distract us from our new found disappointment.

Come to think of it, the stage was probably one of the best features of the show.  So much thought was put into each theme, as it changed from song to song. We never saw the same image for more than three minutes at a time, a true delight for the A.D.D community (such as myself). There was a desert background, an aquarium, a wild wild west sequence, an apocalyptic city, and so on.  When Casablancas stated in a Pitchfork interview that the show was “like half Pink Floyd laser light show” he wasn’t kidding around. Mind blowing and such a welcomed retreat from anything I’ve seen as of late. Bravo, indeed.

I went to a Strokes concert in the Olympia. I then ended up in the bar of the Morrison hotel with the band. Sort of. Fabrizio was there and we sat with him talking rubbish until it was daylight and we had to go back to Rathfarnham to my shared house and a misplaced sense of normalcy.

That night Julian Casablancas sat at the bar for a while, striking a maudlin pose. I stood beside him to get a drink but couldn’t speak. He didn’t look like he wanted to talk to anyone, particularly a fangirl with little to say except “ZOMG I LOVE YOU”. So I got the drink, walked away and resisted my impulses to take him under my wing and show him that he did not need the girls, the drink and the dastardly drugs…I was rather pious in my youth it seems.

I’m so glad I love his new album, Phrazes for the Young, the boy has done good. It’s part tinkly sparkly noises with a splash of the good Strokes of the Is This It? period with a dash of, dare I say it?, country. If you imagine what people in the 70s thought music from the future might sound like it’s a little like that too. Make any sense?

The Strokes sort of lost their way on their last album and I lost interest. No more, I tells you, no more. I loved Fabrizio Moretti’s Little Joy, whose eponymously titled album was on constant rotation this summer. I feel the same will happen with Phrazes this winter. Favourite track is ‘Tourist’, the song that piqued my interest when I heard it in e2 yesterday.

So ex-Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas has a new album Phrazes for the Young coming out and people are PSYCHED. My first glimpse of the new Julian in action was through a YouTube clip of his current tour, which featured the singer doing an awkward mom-dance bebop shuffle while singing one of his new tracks. I would gladly display if his record label hadn’t yanked it down. Instead, this:

The first leaked track is called 11th Dimension and upon first listen – pardon the crassness - all I thought was ‘Wow. Ghey.’

I think my friend Phoebe summed it up best when she exclaimed, “What’s going ON, first YYYs, now J.C!?’” I too thought it bizarre and pretty disappointing that a musician so instrumental in creating an ‘original’ sound and scene back in early 2000s would rely on that ubiquitous 80s-electro-synth Get Into the Groove-thing so many others have turned to. Maybe this would have been cool over a year ago but now it seems a bit lame.

So blah blah blah I rattle off this whole criticism above, get distracted, and don’t pick up on this post till almost 4 days later.  I’ve now listened to the song on repeat, at work, during my commute and while getting ready to go out on Friday night. This one’s a creeper. And I’m a little addicted. So go figure.

That all said, take a listen and see what you think. For me it’s all about the cadence of his lines…he places emphasis on words you would never think to emphasize and extends shorter phrases to match length of longer ones. Ok yeah that’s what ’singing’ is I guess and it’s hard to articulate the effect, but I love it. Sorry for doubting you JC and congrats for making me feel like a cynical, hypocritical ass. I’m sure I’ll rip on the next single and then make it my wedding song or something.

It’s interesting that you can listen to these other albums and still hear that cohesive Strokes sound bubbling beneath the surface. I think I’m ready for a reunion.

i have been listening to a lot of this awesome little band lately. i love their laid back brazilian-american sound sweet quirky lyrics. the band includes los hermanos singer/songwriter rodrigo amarante, the strokes drummer fabrizio moretti, and multi-instrumentalist binki shaprio who all met through devendra banhart! i also dig binki’s style; the bottom photos are from elle 2009 in boy by band of outsiders clothes.  photos by lauren dukoff and brigitte sire.

The frontman of The Strokes, Julian Casablancas, released a new single a few days ago. I have taken my time in reviewing the track for [cl] because I have been apprehensive to make up my mind too quickly about the track. As a huge fan of The Strokes, any side project (or main project… erhumm) released by any member of the group excites me. Power guitarist, Albert Hammond Jr., has been recording and performing solo under his own name for the last two years as bassist Nikolai Fraiture is operating under the pseudonym Nickel Eye and drummer Fabrizio Moretti has been touring with Little Joy.

However, up until this point, we have not heard much from Julian Casablancas except for the occasional appearance on one or two of Pharrell-produced cuts. With 11th Dimension, we hear Casablancas reiterating the eighties sound that the band experimented with on their most recent album, First Impressions of Earth, which was released in 2006. Hammering bass lines, a running and high-pitched guitar riff and steady, up-tempo percussion complement Casablancas’ vocals perfectly.

The LP, Phrases for the Young, will be out on October 19 in the UK and released October 20 in the US courtesy of RCA Records.

7.4/10. A strong first single from Casablancas but there doesn’t seem to be much movement away from his style on the latest album from The Strokes, First Impressions of Earth, where he experimented heavily with eighties synth and percussion (hinting to how Phrases for the Young might end up sounding).

Enfim… Megapuss é um grupo vindo da Califórnia e que é formado por nada menos que Devendra Banhart e a ajuda de Fabrizio Moretti – O grupo também tem integrantes não menos importantes como Greg Rogove, da banda Priestbird, Noah Georgeson, integrante da banda a parte de Devendra e produtor musical. Também tem a participação de Aziz Ansari, ator e comediante nas horas vagas.

O som que a banda faz é totalmente irreverente e original, inclusive suas performances em palco rodeadas de caráter único. Adeptos do movimento New Weird America, que retoma o ambiente psicodélico e experimental completamente sem interesses e por pura diversão, a música deles não se vincula a nenhuma outra coisa parecida. Bem naturalistas, seu primeiro e único álbum até hoje ainda gera especulações e polemicas devido a seu encarte: Devendra e outros integrantes aparecem pelados em diversas fotografias pelo cd inteiro! De primeira, pode ser difícil entender como o som cool e despretensioso de uma banda como o Little Joy pode dar certo em um show ao vivo, com centenas ou milhares de fãs enlouquecidos, colados no palco, berrando a letra a plenos pulmões, mesmo quando a balada é a mais calma possível. No início desse ano, quando a banda encabeçada por Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos), Fabrizio Moretti (The Strokes) e Binki Shapiro fez as primeiras apresentações no Brasil, a diferença era clara: no palco, o clima era um e, na plateia, outro.

Em fevereiro, o público não perdeu uma chance de entoar um coro louvando Rodrigo Amarante, o único brasileiro feijão-com-arroz de verdade do grupo. Por mais que o líder do Little Joy mostrasse uma pequena alegria por estar em casa de novo, os quase-gringos não chegaram nem perto de fazer um mosh ou de pedir as palmas da plateia. No palco, Amarante era o grande anfitrião, que agradecia toda hora, Fabrizio era o filho pródigo que nunca voltou pra casa e Binki… ah, Binki, não tinha notado você ali…

Seis meses depois, veja só: a banda cool fez um show realmente quente. Na Fundição Progresso, no Rio de Janeiro, o público era maior do que na apresentação anterior, no Circo Voador. Os músicos pareciam mais livres no palco, mais maduros, mostraram canções novas pela primeira vez, arriscaram de verdade. Até Binki Shapiro (tímida para eles, esnobe para elas) batia o pandeiro nos quadris com mais felicidade! Pela primeira vez, fazia sentido ouvir ao vivo o som meio hippie, meio tropical e nada brasileiro do grupo. Uma contradição em termos, mas uma mistura que faz um bem inexplicável (só a música explica).

Quando eu ouvi a música do Little Joy pela primeira vez, no ano passado, a única coisa que eu queria era largar tudo e passar um fim de semana em uma praia tranquila, deitado numa rede, bebendo capirinha, ouvindo música, descansando… É claro que eu não fiz isso (alguns artistas têm esse poder de te fazer sonhar assim), mas depois outras pessoas me disseram sentiram mais ou menos a mesma coisa depois de ouvir o disco.

A explicação é bem clara e está nas melodias relaxantes, despretensiosas e calmas da banda. Mesmo a canção mais animada do álbum Little Joy (o único lançado até agora, em 2008) tem esse jeitão um pouco tropical, mas sem cair no caos da lambada, um pouco hippie, mas sem voltar aos anos 1970. É simplesmente um som muito, muito cool. O Little Joy não te quer e não se importa com o que você pensa… certo?

Na caixinha do disco, dentro do seu iPod, ou nos primeiros shows da banda, essa era mesmo a impressão. Mas na segunda temporada de shows no Brasil, os músicos comprovaram seu status de pequenos popstars. E foi difícil não expirar o ar blasé. O público estava diante de uma banda diferente, mais extrovertida, mais divertida. Foi surpreendente ver Binki Shapiro tomando o microfone por um momento, como mestre de cerimônias: “Thank you for coming! Obrigado!”.

As primeiras notas e as primeiras batidas supercadenciadas de “No one’s better sake”, que abriu o show, já levaram a plateia àquela praia imaginária. Mas, dessa vez, não era tranquila e ninguém ficava deitado numa rede. Era uma festa de verdade. O clima havaiano também ficou longe dali quando o grupo tocou “The next time around”. Faça um exercício: ouça a versão da faixa em CD e depois imagine uma versão quase explosiva, ao vivo. É isso mesmo. Vale destacar que Binki Shapiro continua irresistível cantando as duas frases em português na canção.

Até as novas canções e covers funcionaram bem, com destaque para a versão de “Procissão”, de Gilberto Gil. A noite (curta, já que o repertório da banda é magro) acabou muito bem, no maior clima “Hey, Jude”, quando o grupo chamou ao palco Adam Green e o resto dos Dead Trees (a banda de abertura) pra cantar “Brand New Start”, o hit feel good do grupo. Em pouco mais de uma hora, o Little Joy deu uma festa pra mostrar que sabe ser cool, mas sem ser fingir que não faz questão de te agradar.

O show do Little Joy foi coisa fina. Como disse bem um amigo, “jogo jogado“. Festa para encerrar em grande estilo, “vocês são a melhor plateia que já tivemos” soou do palco. É balela, mas não to nem aí. Me senti querida, nos sentimos queridos. Afinal, cantamos os hits em plenos pulmões. Ponto alto para a nova “Sambabylon” e Binki Saphiro sem timidez nenhuma falando com o público a suspirar pelo seu charme.

Uma virose sem explicação e assim se perde um show mais do que esperado. Foi assim que eu perdi o primeiro show do Little Joy da extensa turnê que eles fizeram no começo do ano. Quando pensei que levaria pelo menos mais um ano para ter a portunidade de vê-los ao vivo de fato, eis que confirmam novos shows no Brasil. Dessa vez, tive o prazer de ir, e saudável.

Os shows de abertura – Adam Green e The Dead Trees – se limitaram a essa categoria. Adam Green foi o primeiro, que tentou conquistar fazendo danças sem noção. Uma pessoa muito simpática queeu pude conhecer antes do show, mas a maioria dos presentes na Fundição sequer o conheciam. O mesmo acnteceu com o Dead Trees, formado por dois músicos que fazem parte da banda de apoio do Little Joy. São bons músicos, fato que pode ser constatado no Myspace deles.

O principal show da noite conseguiu atingiu as minhas expectivas. O show foi bem curtinho, mas eles conseguiram manter o interesse, colocando músicas novas e outros covers no Set.

Os dois covers da noite foram muito bem executados: Procissão, uma música de Gilberto Gil e Midnight Voyage, da banda The Mammas and The Papas que ficou ótima na voz da Binki.

No encerramento, todos subiram ao palco para cantar Brand New Start. É visivel a felicidade que eles tem de tcar aqui no Brasil e foi visível que o público também adorou.

A gente já tinha dado a notícia de que a banda Little Joy vai voltar a tocar no Brasil – e com a formação completa, Fabrizio Moretti, Rodrigo Amarante e Binki Shapiro.

A novidade é que, agora, além das datas no Rio de Janeiro no dia 14 de agosto e em São Paulo no dia 15, foi marcado mais um show no dia 13. Ele vai rolar no Bar Opinião, em Porto Alegre.

Ou seja, depois da apresentação do trio ser confirmada na capital gaúcha, só falta Belo Horizonte pra eles fazerem um repeteco da primeira passagem pelo Brasil.

In the beginning there were The Strokes.Then the Strokes begot Albert Hammond Jr, who begot Little Joy, who begot Nickel Eye. Now the lead stroke, Julian Casablancas has decided to go solo himself with his new album Phrazes for the Young (Someone should tell him that he misspelled that word). In his 1 minute plus preview the only sign of any influence from his former band is the synth-y “Ask Me Anything” from First Impressions of Earth. Tracks slated for the album include ‘River of Brake Lights’, ‘Glass’, and ‘Ludlow St’.

A banda Little Joy vai tocar novamente no Brasil em agosto, dessa vez em casas de shows maiores. O primeiro show acontece no dia 14 de agosto no Rio de Janeiro na Fundição Progresso e no dia 15 de agosto na Via Funchal em São Paulo.

Para a felicidade dos brasileiros, a banda toca no país com a formação original, com Rodrigo Amarante (Ex- Los Hermanos), Benki Shapiro e claro Fabrizio Moretti que se ausentou da turnê do grupo recentemente que passou por Estados Unidos e Europa, para se dedicar a gravação do novo álbum dos Strokes, na qual ele toca bateria.

Para melhorar ainda mais, o grupo que abrirá os shows, será outra excelente banda, The Dead Trees, na qual o baixista do Little Joy, Todd Dahlhoff também faz parte.

Em fevereiro a banda esteve no país em nove show lotados e muito elogiados, no qual apresentou as músicas do homônimo e por enquanto primeiro álbum do grupo, lançado em janeiro. Infelizmente o blogueiro aqui não pode ir aos shows, mas como fã do Little Joy, vou fazer de tudo apra não perder dessa vez, principalmente porque a banda toca em São Paulo no dia do meu aniversário, melhor jeito de comemorar a data impossível!

Depois da curta temporada brasileira, que lotou modestas casas de show do país em fevereiro desse ano, o ex hermano Rodrigo Amarante trás a banda Little Joy de volta ao Brasil.

O grupo foi muito bem recebido pelos brasileiros e conquistou boas críticas após os nove shows realizados por aqui.  Com a repercussão, o  trio também formado pela cantora e instrumentista americana, Binki Shapiro, e o baterista do Strokes, Fabrizio Moretti, deixou o Brasil com a promessa de dar continuidade ao novo projeto.

E se você, assim como a que vos fala, ficou chateado com a substituição do charmoso e talentoso Moretti, que precisou se afastar da banda para dedicar seu tempo à gravação do novo CD dos Strokes, a boa notícia é que a banda vem ao Brasil com a formação original. Além disso, contam como baixista Todd Dahlhoff, o guitarrista Matt Borg e o baterista Matt Romano, como reforço nas próximas apresentações.

A má notícia é que serão apenas dois shows:  14 de agosto no Rio de Janeiro e, dia 15, em São Paulo.

Os shows do início do ano não tiveram mais que uma hora de duração, pois a banda tinha, em seu repertório, apenas 11 faixas de um único CD e duas músicas covers.

O repertório será basicamente o mesmo, mas, dessa vez, a banda The Dead Trees, que acompanhou o trio na última turnê internacional, fará a abertura dos dois shows brasileiros.
