Being a huge Final Fantasy fan, I naturally have an interest in the upcoming Final Fantasy titles – Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII – collectively known as Fabula Nova Crystallis or “The New tale of the Crystal” as it translates to English. The set of games do not tie in directly as such, but are more set in the same single universe – assumedly similarly to the “Ivalice Alliance” of Final Fantasy XII, and the Tactics titles. They share a common mythology (crystals and Eidolons) but thats as much as is known of any connection between the titles.

Still, we are a way off of an actual release yet – supposedly Final Fantasy XIII is due for a release no earlier than next year – a minimum of six more months – but as far as it can be told it could really be any time in 2010. Versus and Agito have yet less information released as of yet – so naturally I would assume that these will be released some time after.

Now, I personally like to know as little about the plots of games as possible before I actually play them, so I’m afraid I wont be delving too deep into that aspect. But from what I have heard – I’m still very excited.

Final Fantasy XIII

Being the next numbered title in the Final Fantasy series, I felt it best to cover this title first. Not much has been shown of the general exploration side of things but it will assumedly play in a similar way to its predecessors – controlling a character exploring various areas, talking to NPCs and the like – all very normal. However, this is speculation as this is an element that has been skimmed over mainly – as with all Final Fantasy titles, the focus is on the battle mechanics and the cinematic story elements – but it is known that the enemies will roam the world in real time, much like Final Fantasy XII – although once battle is activated it will seamlessly shift the gameplay into a more fixed “Battle screen”, more reminiscent of the old battle systems of FFX and its predecessors. A similar concept was used in The Last Remnant, although perhaps not as impressively done.

The battle system seems to be reaching back toward FF’s roots – using ATB (Active Time Battle) once more, although it has been completely revamped into something more. The player can control one character at a time, from a party of up to three (a la FFXII), and instead of MP the game now uses an attack chaining system, linked with Cost Points that determine how many attacks you can link per turn. Regular skills such as Attack, Fire, Blizzard etc are back, alongside new combo oriented moves such as launch – in this way the characters should be able to perform complex combos and juggle enemies in an ATB style battle. The visuals look impressive – as demonstrated years ago in a prototype shown at E3 in 2006.

Summons are returning – this time using the name Eidolons (as seen in Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy IV DS), and seem to be going more along the lines of Final Fantasy X’s mould breaking Aeon system that allowed the summon to join into the actual battle and take commands from its summoner. It seems that all characters have summoning abilities – and even have the ability to interact even more with their summons and actually merge with them in some way – it has been shown with his “Shiva sisters” – Nix and Styria, transforming them into a motorcycle and entering ‘Driving Mode‘ assumedly yet another element of combat, carrying a large gun. It seems we’re in for something big, and its sounding spectacular.

The game stars the Gunblade wielding female lead ‘Lightning’, and is set in the futuristic city of Cocoon, which appears as though it is set deep underground. The world seems to be a big nod to the Midgar of Final Fantasy VII – although it is so far unknown whether the world will expand outside of Cocoon or not.

Final Fantasy XIII is due for release on both PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2010.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Each of the titles within Fabula Nova Crystallis promises a different experience – a whole different style of gameplay, each their own game. Versus is headed by Final Fantasy’s expert character designer Tetsuya Nomura, director of Kingdom Hearts, Square-Enix’s massive joint venture with Disney. Little is yet known about Versus, although it promises to be a more realistic take on the real time RPG battle system of Kingdom Hearts.

Starring Noctis, the male lead of FF Versus XIII, Versus promises to be one of the darkest games in the FF franchise – a more gritty story, perhaps aimed at a more mature audience. Nomura stated that he would like to pull off more “tricky” sequences within the game’s battles, reminiscent of scenes from the Final Fantasy VII movie, Advent Children. Not much has been said on the matter, but looking at some of Kingdom Hearts II’s more impressive reaction commands I think we can expect something in a similar vein.

It has been shown that Noctis has various powers – including telekinesis to move weapons to attack or shield himself, and fast movement or teleportation. Since no gameplay footage has been shown we have no actual knowledge aside from what Nomura has said, but it is said he can use a variety of weapons including Swords, Spears and Lances, and that they will all have different abilities and uses. Another thing that has been noted is that Noctis’ eyes change colour to red sometimes in clips – and this does apparently have some kind of meaning to the game, although it is unknown what exactly it will mean in terms of gameplay (if any).

It seems that Noctis will gain at least one ally during the plot (a girl named Stella, with similar powers) so I would assume that she will operate via AI in a similar way to Sora’s companions in Kingdom Hearts.

There’s still a lot to be known on this title, but if Nomura’s words are true, this game could be as good as Final Fantasy XIII itself – or maybe even more so. Currently, Versus is only scheduled for PS3, although this may change in time, as with XIII. No release date has yet been announced, but I would assume it will be released some time after XIII, perhaps as late as 2011 or later.

Final Fantasy Agito XIII

Seeing as Japan is some way ahead of us with their mobile phone technology, occasionally titles have been released for mobiles – such as Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis. However, due to the limitations of technology, Before Crisis was not released outside of Japan and was kept from America and Europe, a game missed by most English-speaking fans of Final Fantasy.

Agito was originally announced to be a similar title – although in August 2008 the title was announced to be discontinued from phone production and instead moved to the PlayStation Portable (PSP).  It is unknown whether this was a move to reach out to a larger audience, or whether the game was simply too large for the phone market, but in any case it seems to be good news for everyone outside of Japan.

Agito is being directed by Hajime Tabata, the director of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, and will apparently be in a similar vein, albeit upgraded and revamped. This time, the player will be able to take control of a party rather than a solo character, and will incorporate ATB elements into the gameplay. The game will have a massive 12 playable characters, assumedly in a party of up to 3 or 4 at one time (going on knowledge of common Final Fantasy gameplay).  It is also said that each character will have his or her own personal summon, Odin confirmed as that of the currently nameless lead-character (nicknamed “Card-Kun” by followers of the game’s development).

The game has been described as an “Online RPG”, but not “massively multiplayer”. This is currently a mystery as to what this will entail, but seeing as players seem to control a set team of story-specific characters it would suggest that the title has heavy offline aspects, rather than mainly online gameplay with player-tailored “avatars.” I personally hope that the online will be a backseat to a great solo title, but we will have to wait and see.

Agito, like Versus, has no official release date at this time, although I would not expect to see it in stores for a couple of years yet.

And there you have it, a roundup of the general goings on with the next installments into the huge Final Fantasy series. Lets hope they’ll be as spectacular as they promise to be. I definitely cannot wait.

Honorable mentions: GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony, South Park XBLA

Whilst this years E3 was a vintage year for the expo, there were a few omissions from the line-up that may have disappointed video game fans who were expecting a little bit more.

Pikmin 3’s absence from the show must have come as a surprise to everyone, because it seemed very much like it was a sure fire thing.  The game has been mentioned in previous interviews, it has been teased by various magazines (I’m looking at you EDGE) and the fact that the original 2 were getting a re-release on wii was a pretty big hint.  It wouldn’t be too fair for a Nintendo fan to complain at length about this games absence, because they were after all treated to 2 new Mario games and a new Metroid.

In the weeks leading up to E3 ‘09, there was a great deal of podcast chatter regarding when exactly the Wii would get its own Zelda game (not counting Twilight Princess, as it was a GC port, which saw the game delayed to coincide with the Wii’s launch) with the general consensus being that we would here something of its existence at this E3, if only in trailer form.  The title was absent from the Nintendo press conference, although we were treated to a single piece of concept art during the course of the week.  This isn’t really enough to satisfy anyone who is anxiously awaiting the next game, but I guess we will soon have Spirit Tracks to tide us over (which was also absent!).

Rare have been away from the spotlight since the release of the well received but disappointingly sold, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.  Ever since Microsofts acquisition of the company, they have always had something on show at E3, that is until this year.  The fact that they had been working on an XBLA remake of the original Perfect Dark came out during the week, but apart from that we have no idea what they are working on.  There are rumors that they are working on something relating to Microsofts Project Natal, as well as something probably relating to avatars.

When Final Fantasy XIII was announced, we were told that it would arrive under the banner ‘Fabula Nova Crystallis’, as series that as well as containing FFXIII, would also contain ‘Final Fantasy Agito XIII‘ and ‘Final Fantasy Versus XIII‘. Apparently development for these three titles was going on concurrently, so its suprising that we haven’t heard more about these other titles whilst we have been seeing live gameplay for FFXIII.  I guess these are just more suited to TGS announcements, fingers crossed for TGS ‘09.

Max Payne 3 was revealed as being in production a short while ago by Rock Star, a company who were suprisingly absent from the proceedings.  Whilst I am sure that this game is in very early stages of pre-production, and they will be focusing their marketing push on the upcoming Red Dead Revolver Sequel, but a teaser trailer or somthing would have been nice!

Thank you E3, Square-enix is back and ready to – once again – give me a heart attack. If it wasn’t enough to say in a previous interview they wouldn’t give information about the FFversusXIII for a while – while I’m dying to get the game with the delicious (subject to opinion) looking Noctis in it – they gave us not one new game, but quite a few.

First, and a very important one to me, FFXIII might get dual audio! If the English doesn’t suit me, I can finally chose to see the original Japanese. Maaya Sakamoto, I absolutely like your voice more than the new English one for Lightning. The game will come to America in Spring 2010. (And I hope it won’t be that much of a difference with Europe)

One of them being FFXIV says enough, doesn’t it? Even though it looks great already, I’m not quite fond of giving the online FF’s a number. They shouldn’t number them. Don’t you think? Anyway, not much information about it has been released but I managed to find a few things.

They have time to make new games, but don’t even find time to finish two or three others (the fabula nova crystallis’ Agito and Versus, anyone?). Anyway, the trailer looks awesome, and I can’t wait to actually go and buy a PS3 especially for Square’s games. If there is a god: Thank you god!

And as if that wasn’t enough,there’s also been a new KH: 358/2 days (what’s in a name) – trailer. Jesse McCartney has again taken the role of Roxas and sounds just the same as before. The new organization member looks a little depressed but what else do we expect of a person who isn’t supposed to exist. And then again, Square just loves their Shibuya looks (The world ends with you). Oh well. Can’t wait to see what this game will add to the story. The animation seems superb for a DS-game though. As long as they won’t tell me it’ll come out on DSi and isn’t compatible with the older DS, I won’t complain.

The song isn’t too fitting at certain parts but otherwise the vid is pretty well put together. My sisters are now completely crazy over the blonde guy who is Noctis’ friend. I also happen to think that Noctis will most likely be with Stella in the end. ARGH!!! And Noctis is really so good-looking… sniff.

I went and saved the Somnus Nemoris (Dream of the Woods) song for FFversusXIII by the way, so ask me for it if you want. (Notice this game is chocked full of names with Latin and French origins.) Also I find that while FFXIII has so much futuristic elements in it, FFversusXIII has much of modern elements instead. Like when Noctis wears his suit. Or his fancy car which I really wouldn’t mind owning. The design on the car windows are nice! Hahahha. C: FFAgitoXIII has what sort of elements I’m not too sure yet, other than the obvious academy look to it.

(In case you find I’m speaking Greek… the FF13 Fabula Nova Crystallis franchise includes FFXIII itself, FFVersusXIII which I’m kind of most interested in, and FFAgitoXIII. Just go here to learn more about the upcoming releases.) Speaking of which FFXIII will be on both Xbox360 and PS3. Versus will be for PS3, and Agito will be for PSP. Woot! Since I already have my Dissidia PSP, I think I’ll just settle for PS3. I’ve never been too supportive of Xbox consoles anyway. Sony loyalty. Hahaha.

Announces Homosexual Protagonists in Next Final Fantasy

Tokyo, Japan-In what could perhaps be deemed a bid to attract gay and transgendered gamers, Square Enix announced yesterday that the two primary characters in their upcoming Final Fantasy XIII, Snow Villiers and “Lightning” are homosexual and transgendered, respectively.

“This is not just to attract attention to our game,” declared Motomu Toriyama, director and writer for the game, “it is an important story element, and will factor heavily into every aspect of the game.”

Square Enix is well-known for having extremely effeminate lead male characters in their games, and while industry pundits have speculated on their latent homosexuality for years, none of these characters have been openly gay. Games have featured gay characters for years, usually in the form of flamboyant villains or comic relief, but with very few exceptions these have been highly stereotypical and offensive portrayals. Transgendered characters are even more rare, but still not unprecedented. Most experts agree that the first game to feature such a character was Ms Pac-man, which starred Pac-man provocatively disguised as a woman. These rare exceptions aside, the release of Final Fantasy XIII will mark the first major video game release to so openly embrace the rainbow lifestyle.

According to Toriyama, the enigmatic Lightning character, previously described as a “female version of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII” was born a biological male, but had corrective surgery to remove her male genitalia. “But the surgery was performed after she had reached puberty, so she has [an "Adam's Apple"], which she tries to hide with clothing,” explained Toriyama, who has worked on several previous Final Fantasy games.

Snow Villiers, a physically large, bandanna-clad male character, is slated to be homosexual, though not openly so until several hours into the game. “When he reveals his secret to the other characters, they are divided on how they feel,” Toriyama elaborates, “some accept him and are proud of his courage, while others feel they cannot work alongside a simpering cock-hungry queer.” The fact that Snow is far less effeminate than many previous Square Enix characters would seem to indicate that he belongs to the Kuma, or “bear” subspecies of homosexual, which are typically larger and less limp-wristed than the more traditional Lance Bass-style gay men.

While Toriyama stated that he doesn’t feel an exploitative God of War-style sex minigame was appropriate, he doesn’t feel he can accurately portray the homosexual lifestyle without graphic depictions of promiscuous gay sex with multiple partners. Therefore, in place of a card game, gamers will be able to play a subgame wherein they can collect hazy, guilt-filled memories of sexual experiences with black men in public restrooms. When asked whether AIDS would factor into this, Toriyama hinted that AIDS might manifest itself in the form of an optional boss fight against an immensely powerful giant robot, much like the Ultima Weapon battles in previous Final Fantasies. “But you may need a little help from a special character who possesses great ‘magic,’” he stated with a sly grin. The Krooze Nest can only speculate that this might be in reference to Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the only known person to have ever defeated Ultima AIDS in open combat.

Square, I know you like to capitilize on your spin-offs, and I generally tend to enjoy them…  I’ll admit… Revenant Wings was pretty good, but it was too simplistic for me… Dirge of Cerebus was pretty fun too, but come on, some real shoot-outs would have been fun.  Crystal Chronicles was pure genious but I never really got 4 Gameboy Advances together.  So, let me ask you… why are you creating main Final Fantasy titles… that are spin-off games from the get-go?  Wait… they’re not set in the same time, or world? Oh… they’re bound together by a common mythos.  Okay… well.  Why don’t you just shut

 up and rename Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII? I really am actually looking forward to both of these games… but I also see what you’re doing.  Throwing the main title of “Final Fantasy XIII” in front of your new games… that, y’know, aren’t Final Fantasy XIII, ensures that you’ll get another sale simply because of their titles.  Remember The World Ends With You? That sold great! Your initial shipment sold out rather quickly. Yeah, It’s a Wonderful World didn’t do as good, but hey, we can’t have everything.  Oh, btw, what and where is Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII?

And square, let me make this clear… I realize that you haven’t done this before.  You’re doing something strange and different, because you’ve slapped the words Versus and Agito before your current roman numeral that you’re so fond of.  Meaning, it’s not like previous titles that gain subtitles after the numerals.  Look… just make sure that this common mythos is truly common across the board, give each of the games their own flavor, but keep them connected, and I won’t bitch.  Really.
And the main thing I have a problem with right now? Give me Final Fantasy XIII, already!

Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children en su edición extendida en formato blu-ray incluirá una demo de más de dos horas de Final Fantasy XIII.

También se sabe que el juego incluirá un sistema de batallas donde podrán jugar más de una persona, controlando cada jugador (en su debido turno) un personaje del equipo que hayamos compuesto.

En cuanto a la línia argumental, se sabe que cada personaje tendrá una historia propia. De esta manera, cuando la historia de un personaje en concreto se esté explicando, dicho personaje ocupará un papel protagonista, dejando a los demás en un plano más secundario a la espera de que sus historias cobren protagonismo.

Final Fantasy XIII Versus

Poca información nos ofrecen sobre este juego, dado que están centrando sus recursos en FF XIII. Sólo nos dicen que el diseño de la vestimenta y de los coches puede variar todavía de lo visto en los tráilers, y que una nueva chica será presentada pronto.

Final Fantasy XIII Agito

Revelan que el sistema de batalla será similar al de Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, con lo que aseguran un RPG de acción. También nos revelan un modo multijugador para hasta 3 personas, que podremos jugar en infraestructura o Ad-hoc.

Las invocaciones estarán presentes en el juego, y serán controlables. Una vez invoquemos al ser en cuestión, pasaremos a darle las órdenes al invocado en vez de al personaje.

Finalmente han comentado que la razón de pasar el desarrollo del juego de móviles a PSP es la falta de recursos que tenían los primeros para el juego que estaban creando.

Parece ser que Square-Enix ha decidido que dos de sus sagas más queridas, en concreto Parasite Eve y Final Fantasy, no podían tener juegos exclusivos para japón, y han decidido pasar el desarrollo de Parasite Eve 3 y de Final Fantasy XIII Agito (precuela de Final Fantasy XIII) a PSP.

Hay que recordar que dichos juegos estaban programándose para móviles, con la consecuencia de que sólo los terminales japoneses pudieran cargarlos o que sólo fueran distribuidos en territorio nipón.

Así entonces todos estamos de enhorabuena, ya que, aunque es difícil que veamos por aquí la tercera entrega de Parasite Eve, sí que es muy probable que podamos disftutar, gracias a este cambio de plataformas, de la trilogía de Final Fantasy XIII (las tres partes de la historia principal de Fabula Nova Crystallis) al completo.

Questa notizia potrebbe far moooolto felici quegli utenti che desidererebbero giocare ad uno dei più bei titoli mai apparsi su console sul proprio Pc, e che non hanno la minima intenzione di spendere una cifra ancora abbastanza alta per comprare il gioiellino di casa Sony, oppure quella schiera di fieri possessori della console targata Microsoft.

Poco tempo fa Nvidia pubblicò sul suo sito di recensione giochi “NZone” che Square Enix, durante la presentazione di Final Fantasy XIII all’E3 di Los Angeles, annunciò che Lo sviluppo del gioco si era spostato su PC, per questione di facilità e velocità di realizzazione grazie all’Engine Crystal Tools (nuovo software di realizzazione di casa Square), e dava per certa la pubblicazione anche per Personal Computer, oltre che per la già confermata XBox 360.

La notizia successivamente venne smentita da Square che sentenziò che il gioco sarebbe rimasto esclusiva console e un suo possibile sviluppo per piattaforma PC non era nei piani dell’azienda.

Un Duro Colpo, per gli speranzosi (me compreso).

Tuttavia, rimangono degli interrogativi, che non chiudono definitivamente la porta in faccia allo sviluppo per pc:

1. Se grazie al Engine Crystal Tools lo sviluppo dei giochi è multipiattaforma, effettuare una conversione per PC è sicuramente lavoro meno gravoso che convertirlo da console.
2. La base di sviluppo è il pc stesso
3. Square-enix si assicurerebbe una bella fetta di mercato grazie anche agli utilizzatori PC (Pirateria esclusa)

Putroppo finchè non si avranno comunicazioni ufficiali, riamane solo da sperare, ma si spera che mamma square accontenti tutti i suoi fan, ma proprio TUTTI!

INCROCIAMO LE DITA!!

Antes que nada, ya tengo mucha información sobre la serie FABULA NOVA CRYSTALLIS: FINAL FANTASY XIII, misma que compartire en futuras entradas. Sin embargo ahora me toca informar y confirmar a los poseedores de un XB360 que llegara FFXIII a esta consola. La razón para mi sigue siendo simple, FFXIII es conocido por atraer a cientos de legiones de fans y Square no se puede perder millones de dolares en dejar una exclusiva asi, sobretodo si te pones a pensar el dinero que cuesta hacer un juego de esta magnitud en las consolas de hoy.

Pero la noticia no es solo esa, el detalle es que llegara FINAL FANTASY XIII al XBOX 360 pero solo en America. En Japón el titulo sigue siendo exclusivo del PS3.

¿Dime que piensas de eso?

Yo considero que es un arma de doble filo para Microsoft, ya que por un lado le dan vida al XBOX y por el otro terminan de darle la estocada mortal en Japón. En fin, Square Enix confirma que este titulo llega al XBOX, asi que chiquillos y chiquillas XBOX fans alegria por que Final Fantasy a llegado.

Todo mundo sabe que em se tratando de RPGs a Square-Enix é a líder absoluta do mercado, mas nem os grandes reis escapam de grandes problemas. Devido a pressão por causa das baixas que o ano fiscal obteve, surgiram rumores que Final Fantasy Agito XIII (para celulares) estaria sendo cancelado. Não se sabe se o projeto vai integrar um console agora, se será mesmo descartado ou se não passam de rumores. Entretanto a Square-Enix não se pronunciou oficialmente sobre o assunto. Esperamos que tal projeto passe a integrar um novo sistema, visto que no ocidente, especialmente no Brasil é impossivel jogar tais jogos para celular, com isso fica o desejo dos fãs de que Parasite Eve 3 também não saia para celulares.
