If your Facebook feed is anything like mine, you’ve seen the same inspiring quote by Martin Luther King Jr. pop up dozens of times in response to the death of Osama bin Laden.

There’s just one problem: It isn’t quite his.

Here is what people are posting:

“‎I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Most of that quote can be correctly attributed to King, but not the first line, which many are reposting due to its relevance to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The correct quote can be found through a Google search in King’s book called “Strength to Love,” which is a collection of his sermons. Read more.
