Open communication works best BEFORE the "I do's" Money is one of the leading reasons

Open communication works best BEFORE the "I do's"

Money is one of the leading reasons for our 50% plus divorce rate. Experts interviewed by the Daily Press insist that money should be discussed at length before marriage. This of course in hopes of preventing future arguments.

But, what about plastic surgery ?How much should be discussed before marriage? Dr Krieger has witnessed patients suffering anxiety as they had to face the dilemma (as they see it) of telling their husband that they have implants after a deflation. Patients that have a good amount of their own breast tissue can make the implant difficult to detect after a breast augmentation. “My husband doesn’t know I have implants!” patients scream with anxiety. What about if a patient has had a facelift? Is this information that should be shared? What about future surgeries that may be desired, for instance a tummy tuck or breastlift after having children? Dr Krieger is well aware that there is not a “correct”answer to these questions. Honesty is the best policy. Discussing past surgeries with a fiance helps to identify the person’s perception of plastic surgery. Discussing future surgeries is key to open communication and an understanding of the role finances will play in the decision. After the marriage is not a good time to discover that a husband despises plastic surgery and would never support his wife in the decision to have plastic surgery.

Stress is part of life. Most of us have heard that one before. Our local Fox station reported on some great ideas to help alleviate stress. Too bad some of the suggestions may alleviate stress but could still leave the residual effects behind. Mainly the furrow between the eyebrows, loose jowls, and frown lines on the face.

Dr.’s Wilcox and Dulin offer the best solutions for the premature aging of the face. Beginning with the brow, a browlift could be what the Dr.’s recommend. The brow must droop low below the proper placement of the eyebrows. The browlift smooths out most wrinkles and returns the eyebrows where they belong. The upper eyelid may need an eyelid lift once the brow has been lifted. This procedure can be performed in combination with the brow lift. The jowls and frown lines may be best treated with a classic facelift. The facelift will take care of not only the face but also the neckline. Most patients look about ten years younger than their real age after a facelift. Dr.’s Wilcox and Dulin are very proud of their patients and their results.

Chapter Arts Centre in Canton may have undergone a dramatic facelift, but it is certainly not the

Chapter Arts Centre in Canton may have undergone a dramatic facelift, but it is certainly not the kneejerk response to a mid-life crisis. The 38-year-old building has just gone through a 16-month redevelopment costing almost £4 million, and the message is loud and clear: Chapter is 38 years young, rather than 38 years old.

“It’s just the beginning,” said front of house operations manager Abi Davies. “It’s going to be a sustainable project now, which is fantastic.” She is not alone in her enthusiasm. The centre officially relaunched on November 24, but the new building had been open for a month by then after work was completed in mid-October.

The entrance to the terrace at the back of Chapter

In its first few weeks the centre welcomed more than 50,000 people through the doors and sold more than 5,000 meals in its redesigned cafe bar, which has almost doubled in size during the refurbishment. Abi said: “We’ve certainly seen a dramatic increase in the number of users now that we’ve doubled the space.”

Part of the redesigned cafe bar area

The success of the cafe bar is integral to Chapter; the centre relies on earned income to account for between 75 and 80 per cent of its turnover because it is a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity.

Local councillor Cerys Furlong said the importance of Chapter, based in Market Road, could not be overstated. She said: “The refurbishment of Chapter has been well worth the wait, and the investment will ensure that it remains an important centre for the arts in Cardiff – and Wales as a whole – as well as a major landmark in Canton, well into the future.

“Chapter provides jobs within our local community, supports local artists in Canton, and makes a massive contribution to the local economy.”

Revamped seating area outside the centre's two cinema screens

The redesign project came a cost of £3.8 million, which was raised through a number of grants and awards but also some smaller schemes run by Chapter’s own fundraising team within the community.

Centre users were able to buy a brick to be used in the building or adopt a builder working on the project, as well as having the opportunity to furnish their homes with an original cinema seat dating back from the 1930s.

The building's history as a former school is reflected in the new design

Abi put the “overwhelming” support of customers down to the communal feel of Chapter and the importance of preserving its originality. “It is still Canton’s community space but it is a beautiful building, and there is nothing in Cardiff that matches what this place does; nothing brings together artists, community groups and people who just want a cup of tea in this way so it’s extremely unique,” she said.

The two biggest donors to the project were the Arts Council of Wales, who made an award of £1,750,000, and the Welsh Assembly Government, who put forward a total of £850,000 in a series of different grants and schemes.

Nick Capaldi, chief executive of the Arts Council of Wales, said: “This imaginative refurbishment will greatly enhance the experience of Chapter for all of its many users and Arts Council of Wales is delighted to have been able to support the venue with a Capital Lottery Award.”

Outgoing First Minister Rhodri Morgan attended the relaunch and he described Chapter as “one of Cardiff’s gems on the arts scene” before recounting his involvement in decorating the building prior to its initial opening in 1971. He said: “If there is a better municipal arts centre than Chapter anywhere in Europe, I would like to see it.”

School desks and old tiles add character to the expanded cafe bar

That sentiment would appear to be widely held, with The Guardian’s Elisabeth Mahoney citing Chapter as a reason to move to South Wales on her television and radio blog last month.

Abi said the centre’s reputation as being part of Canton’s bohemian community was one of the driving forces behind the redesign. She said: “That idea of people coming and being attracted to Cardiff or South Wales is really exciting; I think Canton and Chapter has always been a magnet for artistic, cultural types and if they’ve got an even more fabulous building to come to it’s great.”

The striking appearance of the building, created by architects Ash Sakula, begins even from outside where a 60-foot lightbox is visible above the main entrance. Artists have the opportunity to show their work in the lightbox for six months at a time, and the first piece is a work by 35-year-old Welshman Bedwyr Williams featuring 40 flies across the building’s frontage.

The 60ft lightbox is a dramatic addition above the main entrance

Inside, the design is underpinned by nods to the 1970s origins of Chapter but also the building’s history as a former high school. The cafe bar has desks and satchels dotted around, and the wallpaper is in places incandescently-coloured and patterned.

These subtle but clever acknowledgements of the history of Chapter have set it up for a long and successful future. Abi said preserving Chapter’s heritage was critical in ensuring the centre did not lose its connection with visitors after the refurbishment.

Furniture and decorations were carefully chosen to ensure Chapter's past was reflected

She said: “A lot of people were worried when the project went underway and was designed that it would lose the character of Chapter, because it is an old school, so the architects made sure that they restored or kept features like the old school tiles and they’ve retained the large pillars and the open space.

“It’s really important that it kept its character, this building, because it’s been here for such a long time, and people come here who used to go to school here so it’s really nice to keep that element to it.”

The future of Chapter looks bright; 38 years after it first threw its doors open, things have only just begun.

Well, it has been 17 days since the divorce was finalized. It has been extremely liberating. I have spent a lot of time with friends and family. On the downside… still getting texts from the ex. That should be a whole different blog. Ugh. I am planning to change my number this week. Pfft.

So… a friend of mine suggested online dating. I was very skeptical. I dated mostly from online when I was young, and you know how that ended. But, I thought I would just take a look around and see what was out there. I enrolled on two free sites, just to check it out. One site… lots of interest. The other site is much slower.

So… yesterday I went on my first “first date” in over 11 years. Talk about stressful! The guy was sweet, and we just sat around watching college football and talking. It was nice to talk to someone and to be around a guy again who was actually interested in me. I don’t know if it will go anywhere, but it brought on some hope that I can probably do this again.

So – Weigh in… what do you think of the new look? I debated starting a whole new blog, but was told that it would be better to keep this one going. I just want to talk through life going forward, rather than focusing so much on the past. And to my ex husband, who is apparently still reading this site to torture himself, please move on. This blog was never about you. It was about me, and what I have dealt with for the last 11 years. I have moved on, and wish you would too. Good luck to you.

How much should you tell your children about your plastic surgery? We have certainly come a long way

How much should you tell your children about your plastic surgery?

We have certainly come a long way since Leave it to Beaver and The Andy Griffith Show. Children today ask the questions that they want answers to, and we are expected to answer them no matter how personal. As plastic surgery has become more widely accepted more parents have posed the question to Dr Ronel – What do I tell the children?

Dr Ronel is uniquely qualified to answer, as he has an extensive background in pediatrics (just check out his CV!). “Patients who undergo facial surgery usually have older children,” says Dr. Ronel. “Give them information and facts, but avoid sounding as if justification is needed for the decision to have plastic surgery. It is important to involve the children but seeking their approval is not part of that involvement.” Younger grand children may be frightened by bandages and visible bruising and swelling.” Breast augmentation and liposuction are procedures that usually are not as noticeable, especially to small children. Some women have difficulty explaining their decision to have breast augmentation to their teenage daughters – Dr. Ronel offers advice and counseling through his image-identity expert, Dr. Scott Thomas. He is a psychotherapist who helps families deal with plastic surgery procedures in a positive way. Hear him discuss spousal stress, a related issue with common points.

The promise was made by IBM at the SmarterCities Conference on Tuesday which lured the city’s leaders and State officials from the municipal departments of Education and Training, Information and Communication, Transport and other related agencies.

Under the program, IBM will send six expert teams in early 2010 to collaborate with HCMC’s leaders, school managers, and local scientists to suggest solutions to develop urban transportation system, energy power saving, control of food quality, education and clean water supply.

While information technology is the core business of the U.S.-based giant, the new IBM endeavor suggests that technology can do more to living conditions than its traditional domain of information.

According to Long, major cities in developing countries currently are facing with traffic congestion, food waste and energy waste. Meanwhile, backward infrastructure and outdated technology can hinder their advancement.

Our local Denver news recently reported on the introduction of a free iPhone app that lets customers download an app that will test their blood alcohol level. Of course it is just a guideline but the hope is that it will keep impaired drivers off os the road over the holidays.

Dr Serota takes issue with the lax attitude towards alcohol consumption. It is important that patients are honest with him in the initial consultation about all alcohol consumptions. Sometimes patients will omit daily wine consumption as alcohol use. This is important information to share with Dr Serota as he accesses the health of a prospective patient.

Surgical procedures such as a facelift or abdominoplasty are more invasive and patients that consume alcohol on a regular basis need to be evaluated with that information taken into consideration. Dr Serota recommends that all patients discontinue the consumption of alcohol two weeks prior to surgery. Of course , alcohol is not allowed during recovery especially while patients are taking narcotic pain relievers. Dr Serota and his staff care deeply about their patients health and plastic surgery result. Taking a proactive approach concerning alcohol consumption is an important part of that concern.

Most of us have a pair or two in our jewelry boxes right now-if we don’t we did at one point. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and some even have our names written in them. Hoop Earrings have resurfaced and a recent article commented on the do’s and don’t ’s of “Hoop Earrings.” In LA ,what can be more important than the rules of fashion?

It’s been stated that hoops should be “in proportion to your face, hair, and neckline.” Simplicity seems to be the key to wearing larger jewelry items. Gorgeous facial features can be perfectly accented by a thin, large pair of gold or silver hoops. Dr. Kim offers procedures such as a facelift to tighten and firm the entire face, a forehead lift for the areas above the brow line, and an eye lift for sagging skin or puffiness around the eye area. Make sure your hoop earrings frame your beautiful face! Don’t believe the myth that large hoop earrings will draw attention away from a sagging neckline. The rule of thumb: Large hoop earrings look best on a youthful face. Dr Kim can help you to acheiveyour most youthful face.

In a world of doom and gloom news it is nice to see news about optimism. A recent news report had tips on remaining optimistic in adversity. These tips are helpful in life in general including plastic surgery recovery. Dr Eisemann believes that a patients attitude is very important throughout the plastic surgery experience.Initially during the consultation it is not unusual for the patient to be nervous. While being nervous is expected Dr Eisemann finds that patients with a positive attitude and open mind tend to retain more information than patients that seek a consultation with a gloom and doom attitude. While patients should have realistic expectations they should expect a a good outcome. From breast augmentation to facelifts to rhinoplasty every procedure has unique benefits and limitations. It is in the best interest of the patient to not only adopt a positive attitude for themselves but also to surround themselves with only positive people. This is especially important during the plastic surgery recovery process.

Dr Eisemann and his staff are committed to a practice with positive attitudes and great relationships with patients.

Tiger Woods news is dominating the headlines as he admits “transgressions”. Dr Wilcox and Dulin are sensitive to the effect a spouses infidelity can have on womens self-esteem. Some women consult with Dr’s Willcox and Dulin complaining of a need to “fix” what caused their husband to cheat. It is not unusual for women to choose breast augmentation to make their breast larger and more perky in hopes of being more attractive to their husband. Some patients elect for even more invasive surgeries like abdominoplasty or a facelift. Dr’s Wilcox and Dulin are quick to point out to patients in these situations that plastic surgery would not have prevented a spouse from cheating. It is important to help patients examine their motives for considering plastic surgery. Anger toward a spouse or feelings of inferiority are not suitable motivations. Plastic surgery decisions are personal and should be for the patients desires alone. It is not advisable to make drastic plastic surgery decisions under emotional duress. Dr’s Wilcox and Dulin care about their patients and their psychological state. This is the best way to insure that their patients have a great plastic surgery experience.

Many of us adore the Christmas lights, smells, and sounds. One thing we probably don’t enjoy so much is pulling our tangled up Christmas lights from the nightmare of storage space. The holidays are supposed to filled with love, relaxation, and the spirit of happiness and giving-not worry and stress. A local article recently published “5 Organized Ways to Make Your Holidays Merry” these 5 simple tips are meant to lesson the aggravation caused during the holiday season.

The final tip mentioned in the article is planning ahead for the next holiday season. We all know in life there is a Winter, Spring, Summer, and a Fall. For those wishing for the look they desire by Spring or Summer the time to start planning is now. All of the procedures offered by Arizona plastic surgeon Dr. Angelchik can be performed in the winter with exceptional results by Spring or Summer.
About 7 years ago, I lost 65 pounds which left my skin somewhat saggy, and it’s something that’s bothered me for several years. And having turned 50 recently, I just felt that I needed to do something. I found myself trying to hide my chin when I was out because I had the sagging in the neck and trying to lift my face. And when I was talking to people because I was just embarrassed– I felt like I looked much older. I just felt like I looked old. But inside, I’m much younger than I appeared, and I just needed to do something for myself. So, I did some research and had looked into the Smart Lift, and Doctor Sessa was on Channel 7. I was just very impressed. So, I got online and signed up for his seminar and came in, and I was just impressed with the before-and-after pictures and the presentation, and I followed up, came in and had a consultation and, a few weeks later, had the surgery. He just made me feel at ease and explained the procedure, what he was going to do, thoroughly and was just wonderful. He made recommendations on what I have done. He took some before pictures and has followed me through and taking after pictures now, too. He was just great. He just made me feel at home. And within a couple of weeks, I had my surgery. Came in that morning– the nursing staff here is incredible.

Doctor Sessa was incredible. I was here for maybe two, two-and-a-half hours and went home. The first thing that I did when I got home from having the surgery was go to the bathroom and look in the mirror, and I could see the difference instantly. Right then and there. Within 45 minutes of the surgery ending, I could see it. It was instant. And again the next morning when they changed the bandages, and it was just– it’s incredible. Major difference. I had very little bruising. I followed their instructions thoroughly, which I think is very important. But the pain was minimal, which is another reason I went with the Smart Lift, because it’s minimally invasive, and the healing time is nothing. I’m just three weeks out, and I have no bruising. I was looking at other type of lifts where they would do them in Tampa, and I just didn’t feel comfortable because, number one, the distance; number two, it’s getting to know the doctor before the procedure. And from what I understand, when you go to other types of places, the doctor doesn’t even see you until the day of the surgery. You just meet with staff beforehand. Whereas here, it was close to home. Like I said, the Smart Lift, which is what I wanted, I didn’t want anything major. And he was close. And he was wonderful as far as after my surgery, too. He called that evening to see how I was, and I just felt like they were just a minute away if I needed them, and that was really important to me. I just feel great. The morning after, I just felt so excited and so relieved, and I’m just happy. I feel like I’ve gone back five years. I just feel like a new person. I’m happy, and I look in the mirror, and I no longer have the desire to pull my cheeks back to see what I’d look like before or after, before and after. My neck, I feel like I’ve lost years off of that, and it’s something I could not have accomplished with just exercise. There was nothing that could fix this besides the surgery. So, I’m elated that I did it. And the little bit of pain I went through was nothing compared to the results. It was well worth it. Everyone keeps asking me what I’ve done different with my hair, because I haven’t told very many people that I’ve had the surgery, but the people that I have told, they, you know, want to know who it is and his card. I’ve given his card out and made recommendations. I even have a girlfriend up in Maryland that wants to come down and have him do it. But people that I have not told, they just think I’ve done something different with my hair, which is what I wanted. I wanted a natural look. Not one to where my face looked stretched or anything like that. So, those are the people that kind of look at me and say, what did you do different with your hair? And I never tell. I’ll never tell.

So, oftentimes during consultations, I usually get the question of, “Doctor, if I have the Smart Lift done, where am I going have my scars?” And I really take great pride in telling people this, because I know, and I’m very confident that I can give them very, very esthetic scars. I take great pride in that aspect of facial cosmetic surgery and in the Smart Lift itself. First of all, there’s a small hidden scar that’s just underneath our chin. After that, there’re also some hidden scars around our ears. These are in well-hidden places. It starts out in the sideburn, and I create the scar in such a fashion that, after about a month, hair from our sideburns actually grows through the scar itself, which inevitably becomes invisible. Then we continue around certain folds of the ear creases, and we’re able to keep it such and contour these scars so that they’re very, very well hidden. Then we continue around the ear in the ear lobe, and it stops just behind the ear lobe. Now, by doing that, by stopping there, I realized that in the conventional face lift, that scar would continue up to a certain point behind the ear and then down into the hair line. And what I’ve realized is that I could avoid all of that surgery behind that part of the ear and avoid all the potential problems of scarring, of swelling, of increased and prolonged post-operative problems. But the biggest thing that it avoids is the potential for hair loss. People really hate that.

And with the Smart Lift, I’ve avoided that whole area, and that really is one of the things that people love about this procedure is that they don’t have to worry about having hair loss behind their ear or, if they wear their hair up – a lot of my patients like to wear their hair up. They’re very active. They want to know, Doc, when can I go and start playing tennis again? Or I ballroom dance or I play racquetball or I like to use the gym, and I take great pride in the fact that these people, knowing that in 3 to 5 or even 6 days maybe, that they are back to almost a normal routine where the swelling is almost all gone, and they’re doing great, and they love it. And when they come back after their 5-day, 6-day post-op period to have their sutures removed, they are so happy and overjoyed, because it’s just a complete transformation. And in that transformation, it’s like they left the old person behind, and now there’s this new person, and they just can’t wait to get back into their old routine of playing golf or playing tennis or going out dancing or dining. And you know, one of the great things is seeing the husband’s reactions from this. Most of my patients are female and seeing the reaction from the husbands, it’s like, wow, you know, I got my wife from 30 years ago back. And it’s just a wonderful thing to see, and it really makes me happy to see that.

Another question I get during my seminars is, Doctor, will you be doing this lift or are there other physicians doing this? And I take great pride in the fact that, yes, this is me. I see my patients pre-operatively. I see them post-operatively. I see you during your consultation. And as a matter of fact, I usually spend 45 minutes to an hour with my patients at their consultation to make sure that I understand exactly what they’re asking me, telling me exactly what they want. One of the first things I ask my patients is not what I can do for you, “Well, I see this wrong; I see this wrong.” It’s what bothers you. What is the thing about the way that you’re aging, about your face, that bothers you? And this way, we can talk about how I can help you with that. The Smart Lift is a great procedure to fix that. This is a great way to talk about how the Smart Lift will help them. There’s sometimes advertised some other types of mini lifts and some other types of facial cosmetic surgery products out there. But the thing that I tell most of my patients, if not all of them, is the greatest difference between what I do and what everyone else does is that I’m doing your surgery. And that is the greatest difference. And you know, people appreciate that, because if you’re going to be my patient, you’re coming to see me. I’m going to be your physician. I’m going to take care of you from start to finish. And no one else is going to see you other than my nurses at my care facility. But as far as taking sutures out, changing your bandages, I will be the one that will see you from the point of coming through the door to the point where you’re out on the golf course again.

A lot of times during my consultations– and I really pride myself on being very upfront with patients and being very honest. People come to me because they know, and I’ve gained the reputation of being very honest with my patients, telling them exactly what I think that they need whether it’s what they want to hear or not. And one of the questions I usually see is– one of the main complaints, I should say, is, “Doc, over the last 10 years, or 5 years, or even sometimes the last few years, the folds around my mouth are getting deeper, and I’m starting to get deeper creases at the corners of my mouth. Or these things over here, they are starting to sag down. And the upper part of my neck, I’m starting to see these lines in my neck. I don’t like this so-called turkey gobble.” And the great thing about it is when I hear these complaints, I know you’re a great candidate for the Smart Lift immediately, and I tell them. And when I show them in the mirror what is possible, they just perk up, and they love hearing it.

The wonderful thing about this procedure is that, not only have I decreased the surgery time that it takes to do a traditional face lift, so something like this is usually done in about an hour and a half or so – but that people really, really love that aspect as well – but one of the great things about the Smart Lift is that all these problem areas around the jowls and the deeper lines in our mouth is sort of– I’m able to use peoples’ anatomy. And what I do is, I’m able to move the anatomy back into the position where it used to be. If we were able to take a picture of us standing upside down, we would see that gravity is actually a real big part of how we age. The skin thins, we loose collagen, we loose water, and then our skeleton doesn’t change. So, it just starts to hang on a skeleton that used to be plump. So, once we replace the anatomy into its normal position, people see this during the consultation as I move their facial structures around, and they love it. They love the way it looks. And the thing that’s so wonderful about this procedure is that, if you’re worried about your jaw line or the jowls or the corners of your mouth or the upper part of your neck, the so-called turkey goblet, this procedure is great for that, because we’re able to move the anatomy in such a direction that it recreates things that, where it was 10, 15 years ago, and create that youthful, strong jaw line that everyone loves to have and that we sometimes lose as we age, sort of starts to blend with our neck and our face, and we sort of lose that crisp jaw line that’s so esthetic. And the wonderful thing about this procedure is that we regain it, we recapture that jaw line, and that’s one of the things that people love. The things that’s also wonderful is that I’ve noticed in that moving the anatomy to a more normal and natural position, it creates a more fullness in our cheeks. And that’s something that also is one of the things that’s great about the Smart Lift, because as we age, we sort of get sunken in underneath our cheek bones because all that skin starts to fall down and it sort of falls down right on these folds around our nose. So, what the Smart Lift does is it actually re-approximates the tissues and the anatomy to the normal position which should be just underneath the cheek bones, and people see a more fuller appearance afterwards, and they love that.

So, as we age, you may have started out when you were young with a nice heart-shaped face. And now that you’re in your 60s, you have a square face. The great thing about the Smart Lift is that, when we re-approximate the tissues into a more natural position, you’ll regain that nice, round fullness in your face again. Now, of course, it’s all particular for everyone’s anatomy and where you started from. I can’t change someone’s face completely. This isn’t the Witness Protection Program. But on the other hand, I can help you regain the youthful appearance that you had maybe 10 to 15 years ago, and that’s really all what people really want. You know, they say I’m okay with growing old, but I’m active, I love being out there. I love dancing and going out. All I’m looking for is to just look my age, and I don’t want to look like an old person when I feel like a young kid inside. That’s what I hear all the time, and it gives me great pleasure to be able to give people that youthful appearance that they had, because it transforms them, and it really turns people who are sort of shy and sort of reticent to being more outgoing and happy, and they are not afraid to go out in public or go to meetings anymore. So, that’s one of the ways that I really find happiness in providing this service for people.

So, the way that I started with the Smart Lift was after doing hundreds of conventional face lifts and seeing the patients post-operatively and seeing– sometimes they had a little bit more difficulty with the recovery period. Sometimes, it was a little bit more extended. Sometimes people weren’t real happy with the large scars that were left behind after a conventional facelift. So, over time, I started to realize that I didn’t have to do this much surgery to give people the same result.

So, I started to reduce the scar and give people smaller and smaller scars. Now, where I am now with the Smart Lift, I’m giving people about a 50% reduction in the scar, and that equates exponentially to the post-operative period where I’m seeing people at 4 and 5 days going back to work where they have some minimal bruising. They have minimal so-called down time where they feel they can’t really go out in public and do things. Most of my patients are out and about within 5 days and go back to work. Most of my patients actually come from work to get their sutures out after about 5 days, and this is what people really love. This is what really opens their minds to how wonderful this procedure is and how I’ve sort of changed their lives.

And this is what really turns me on as a surgeon and what I really appreciate, because I’ve seen how my practice has transformed peoples’ lives in that, you know, “Oh, doctor, I’m worried. I’m going away in a few weeks, and I’m worried that I’m going to be so swollen and uncomfortable, and I really like to go out and play tennis, and I’m very active.” And I hear those things a lot, and I feel very comfortable telling them that within 5, maybe 6, 7 days at most, that you’re pretty much back to almost normal behavior. And I tell my patients, please, go back, do what you’ve been doing before, barring a few lifting weights or some things that could potentially harm them of course. But generally, cooking, cleaning, going for walks, a light, light exercise. A lot of my patients are a little bit older, and they like to go for walks or walking their dogs, and they want to know that it’s okay to do these things. And it feels great to me to allow these patients to do this and do it confidently.

Usually during my consultations, I often get the question of where exactly are my scars going to be if I have the Smart Lift? And I really take pride in telling people where the scars are going to be. First, there’s going to be a small scar hidden underneath our chin that’s usually imperceptible. Secondly, there’s some scars that are going to be around our ears in well-hidden places. We start out in the hair line right by your sideburn, and the reason we start out there is because I found that if I create a certain scar, that the hair will actually grow through it, and it will become almost invisible after about a month to a month and a half. Then we use the contours of the ear to create the rest of the scar. And I like to keep the scar inside and hidden as well as well as I can. Then we turn the corner and sort of end the incision, and the scar ends right behind our ear lobe. That’s pretty much the end point for the Smart Lift where our scars are going to be. And what’s really nice about this and what people really appreciate and what I really enjoy is that I don’t have to extend it back into peoples’ hair line, and that is something that is usually part of the traditional face lift that I’ve sort of gotten away from. And by doing so, I’ve seen that, a lot of times, that area has very little blood supply sometimes, so you can actually end up getting some scarring problems as well as some hair loss. So by moving away from that, I avoid all of those issues. Plus, a lot of times there’s a potential to have hair loss.

And you know, people really appreciate the fact that we’re moving away from that, but less surgery, less swelling, quicker down time, quicker recovery. And this is really the area that we see a lot of the magic, because people will come back after 10 days, even a week and a half to even at a week, and say, “My God, I can’t even see my scar anymore. It looks wonderful.” And I really take pride in giving people highly esthetic scars. I think that that is the trademark of a really proficient and a good surgeon is giving people quality scars. I really don’t want people to walk around seeing a scar and saying, “Oh, you must have gone to see Doctor Sessa.” I don’t want people to say that. The best compliment anyone could pay me is if somebody says no one’s even come up to me and said that I’ve had surgery. They just look like I’ve had my hair done or I maybe lost a few pounds. And those are the best compliments that people pay me. I don’t want somebody to say, “Geez, you look like you’ve had surgery.”

Oftentimes during my seminars, I get the question, so what can I expect in terms of down time for this procedure? And, you know, very confidently, I could tell people that, just like any surgery, there is 2 to 3 days of some mild swelling. Now, we also use medications to help reduce that. But just the nature of the Smart Lift itself, where it’s less surgery and greater results, is the whole caveat that you’re going to have a shortened so-called down time. So I think telling people generally 3 to 4, to 5, maybe even 6 days, 3 to 6 days is generally a quick recovery. Now, of course, recovery is sort of one of those loaded questions where, when I think of recovery, I’m thinking of laid up in bed drinking ginger ale. That’s not it at all. You know, most of my patients are out and about the very next day. They are washing clothes, they are cleaning, they are cooking for themselves, doing things that they normally do. Walking around. They are not just sitting in a chair all taped up and bandaged up. Those are things that people really like to hear.

Now, of course, the first day to 2 days to help reduce the amount of swelling, we need to keep certain bandages and some pressure dressings on your face so that you can recover even quicker. And I feel very confident in telling people 3 to 6 days is very, very reasonable. We’re at the point of 6 days, 5 or 6 days, you may, in fact, be at work by that point. Or, in fact, going out for a light jog or going out for a bike ride at 6 days after your Smart Lift. I think that that’s very reasonable. I leave a lot of this up to my patient. I think that most people are very intelligent, and I tell them use common sense. If it hurts or you notice something is sort of not right, don’t do it. The only thing I do tell people to avoid is no weight lifting. Nothing over 15 pounds or even 10 pounds. No bending over, lifting boxes, lifting heavy things, like heavy cleaning or heavy house cleaning work for at least a week. The second thing is, is tennis or golf. Nothing where you move your head very quickly from side to side. Those activities need to be avoided for probably at least 10 days. But otherwise, I think that people recover very, very quickly from the Smart Lift.

But not only that, I can’t really say that it’s a quick and easy recovery, but it’s very, very well tolerated. People tolerate it very well and that they come in and usually the first thing they say is, gosh, Doc, you know, I didn’t have hardly any pain at all. I felt great. Then when they come in to get their stitches out, most of my patients even go further than that and say that they didn’t have any pain at all other than some mild feeling of uncomfortableness just from the swelling and from wearing the bandages. But other than that, most of my patients get over this very, very well.

You know, one of the bigger questions that I often get at my seminars as well is, how long can I expect the Smart Lift to last? And that’s a really loaded question as far as cosmetic surgery is concerned. I’m not trying to avoid the point, but, when I get that question, how long is this going to last, well, you know, the thing that I always think about is, when you buy a brand-new car, how long is it brand new? Now, you know, that’s a really good analogy, because we’re continuing to age all the time. Now, even though I’m going to set the clock back, and you’re going to look absolutely fabulous, I usually tell people that you can expect good solid results for at least 6 to 8, maybe even 10 years from this lift.

Now, what does that mean? That means that if you had the surgery, and you took exceptional care of yourself, you stayed out of the sun, you took your vitamins, you exercised, you eat right– even though we do all those things, we still age. So, I guarantee you that if you had the Smart Lift, and in 10 years, if you had nothing done, you would look infinitely better than if you had the Smart Lift done than if you did nothing. So, that’s a very, very important point on how long this will last me. You know, if you take yourself a snapshot of now and then in 10 years, no matter how great the surgical procedure is, you’re still going to look 10 years older. However, if you’ve had cosmetic surgery, and in particular, if you’ve had the Smart Lift, you will look much, much better.

After most televised award shows there are a flood of reports about what celebrities were wearing and of course who has had plastic surgery. The AMA’s didn’t disppoint. As the Orange County Register treated us to a photo gallery summation we can guess which celebs made a trip to the plastic surgeon. Dr Mowlavi is accustom to the post award celebrity chatter in his practice in Laguna Beach. Patients often ask about a Jennifer Lopez or Janet Jackson nose and Dr Mowlavi points out the benefits and drawbacks of rhinoplasty. Breast augmentation was not the big story this year mostly because celebs were more covered and cleavage was not the theme of the night. The trend lately appears to be smaller more natural breast in comparison to the extra-large breast augmentations of a decade ago. Brow lifts and Botox were certainly well represented this year. Celebs of every age had wrinkle free foreheads and virtually no crows feet. Dr Mowlavi believes the award shows are fun to watch but his patients prefer to not be singled out as a plastic surgery patient. They just want to look beautiful.

Avoid them prior to surgery

It is virtually impossible to live in Southern California and avoid being exposed to the latest greatest supplement claim. Energy drinks are all the rage here and most boast an ingredient called L-carnitine as an energy booster. A recent LA Times article seriously doubted the effectiveness of the ingredient.

Dr Kim advises his patients that all supplements should be treated as drugs and reported to him prior to surgery. Two weeks before surgery all medications except those approved by Dr Kim should be stopped. Patients who are preparing for surgery should bring their caregiver with them to the preoperative appointment with Dr Kim. In this appointment patients are given the important instructions for their recovery. Dr Kim will review all medications including supplements, and prepare the patient for what to expect when they arrive at the surgery center. For breast augmentation, liposuction, abdominoplasty, and facelift patients, Dr Kim will explain to patients the garments needed following surgery. He will also explain to the patient wound care and drain care if the patient is likely to have drains. Patients and their caregivers are encouraged to ask questions and to be sure they fully underatand the procedure they are having done. Dr Kim and staff are committed to well informed patients and beautiful results.
